Gone are the days of Communist austerity.

0:00:200:00:23

China is in the grip of a consumer revolution.

0:00:230:00:27

In this programme - Beijing's addiction to shopping,

0:00:270:00:32

from designer fashion to the latest herbal medicines.

0:00:320:00:35

Plus a look at the artistry involved in making enamelled vases.

0:00:350:00:41

And how to browse and buy, Chinese-style.

0:00:410:00:45

In comerce-driven new China, markets are springing up wherever there are tourists.

0:00:470:00:52

And sellers are generally out to make as much as they can.

0:00:520:00:56

So expect a bargain!

0:00:560:01:00

This buyer's looking for enamelled pots - what we call cloisonne.

0:01:000:01:06

Listen for the prices they discuss.

0:01:060:01:08

Cloisonne is one of China's most elaborate traditional arts,

0:01:510:01:55

its manufacture dating back to the 14th-century Ming dynasty.

0:01:550:01:59

The motifs used in the designs are rich in myth and symbolism -

0:02:020:02:07

the more intricate the design, the more prized the results.

0:02:070:02:12

Authentic cloisonne is handmade. The base of the pot

0:02:150:02:19

is usually brass or copper.

0:02:190:02:22

The outlines are mapped out with minute strips of copper,

0:02:220:02:26

glued onto the pot. The tiny troughs are filled in

0:02:260:02:30

with layer upon layer of enamel.

0:02:300:02:33

Blue.

0:02:350:02:38

Yellow.

0:02:390:02:42

Red.

0:02:450:02:48

Enamel has to be fired at very high temperatures,

0:02:500:02:54

and some pieces four or five times, before they're finished.

0:02:540:02:58

The final polishing is done using rough stone,

0:03:070:03:11

perfectly positioned against the curve of the pot.

0:03:110:03:14

Definitely a job for a master-craftsman.

0:03:140:03:17

The time and skills involved make genuine cloisonne quite expensive.

0:03:230:03:29

How much?

0:03:320:03:34

How much is this one?

0:03:370:03:39

900 yuan.

0:03:460:03:49

"Kuai" is another word for "yuan".

0:03:490:03:51

800 yuan.

0:03:550:03:58

I'll think about it.

0:04:010:04:04

One of Beijing's best-known streets for crafts and antiques

0:04:100:04:13

is Liu Li Chang. Not everything is what it seems, though.

0:04:140:04:18

The shops have all been done up to look older than they are,

0:04:180:04:22

and some of the goods on sale have had the same treatment.

0:04:220:04:25

But it's still a fascinating hunting ground.

0:04:250:04:29

One of the more authentic places to shop is the state-run store,

0:04:290:04:34

with every kind of Chinese painting

0:04:340:04:37

and calligraphy style to choose from, in either originals or prints.

0:04:370:04:41

The world-famous horse series was painted in the 1930s.

0:04:430:04:47

The painter spent much of his life in Paris and was one of the first

0:04:470:04:52

to fuse Chinese and Western techniques.

0:04:520:04:56

More traditional paintings are heavily influenced by Buddhist

0:04:570:05:01

and Taoist beliefs, and portray a delicate and stylised natural world,

0:05:010:05:06

of which man is but a small part.

0:05:060:05:10

Painting.

0:05:190:05:21

That painting.

0:05:230:05:25

This painting.

0:05:270:05:29

To say you like something, say:

0:05:300:05:33

I like...

0:05:340:05:36

500 yuan.

0:05:500:05:53

It's too expensive!

0:05:550:05:57

But there are cheaper ones.

0:05:590:06:03

We want...

0:06:210:06:28

this painting.

0:06:230:06:28

Here, as in most Chinese stores, you get your bill and pay at the cashier

0:06:280:06:33

before collecting your goods.

0:06:330:06:37

Some of Beijing's liveliest downtown areas have changed little

0:06:460:06:51

since the 1950s, and there's plenty to tempt the adventurous shopper.

0:06:510:06:56

The famous medicine shop here is a vast emporium of pills,

0:07:000:07:06

potions and herbal remedies.

0:07:060:07:09

The shop has been in business for over 300 years,

0:07:120:07:16

and gained its reputation serving the Imperial Court.

0:07:160:07:19

This is the Fortnum and Mason of traditional remedies -

0:07:190:07:24

some of them rare or endangered species culled from every corner of China.

0:07:240:07:28

Chinese medicine has never been more lucrative than now.

0:07:300:07:35

A piece of ginseng, depending on its age and quality,

0:07:350:07:39

could set you back £10,000.

0:07:390:07:43

The shop also has a health centre

0:07:440:07:47

where patients can be seen by top specialists.

0:07:470:07:51

In China, healthcare doesn't come free.

0:07:510:07:54

Only state employees' care is subsidised. The rest pay their way, or join an insurance scheme.

0:07:540:08:00

Western medicine is widespread,

0:08:000:08:03

but expensive. Many still prefer the more holistic approach

0:08:030:08:07

of Chinese medicine.

0:08:070:08:09

Traditionally, the Chinese regard every food they eat as having a particular health-giving property.

0:09:150:09:20

At the local market, variety is truly the spice of life.

0:09:200:09:25

When sellers talk to foreigners, they'll often use finger counting

0:09:300:09:35

in an effort to help you.

0:09:350:09:37

10 yuan for 6 jin! A bargain!

0:09:390:09:42

The jin is the usual measure for selling fruit and veegtables.

0:09:420:09:47

..is roughly half a kilo.

0:09:480:09:51

You'll be tempted by...

0:09:510:09:56

lychees.

0:09:540:09:56

Peaches.

0:09:580:10:01

You can buy fruit by the piece, and simply say...

0:10:010:10:06

I want three mangoes.

0:10:130:10:16

Four peaches.

0:10:250:10:27

I want a jin of grapes.

0:10:390:10:42

Altogether, how much is it?

0:10:460:10:50

Altogether, 35.

0:10:540:10:57

Every few months, a new shopping complex

0:11:090:11:12

opens its doors to style-hungry Beijingers.

0:11:120:11:15

Pleasuredomes, offering every conceivable consumer item, and open till late seven days a week.

0:11:150:11:21

Imported cars are double the price of the West,

0:11:220:11:26

and yet there are people buying.

0:11:260:11:30

The designer image is what most affluent Chinese aaspire to.

0:11:360:11:40

If the Western label's too expensive, imitation is what sells.

0:11:410:11:45

The more opulent the look, the bigger the fashion statement.

0:11:450:11:50

But dressing like the West isn't the only way to make in impact.

0:11:530:11:57

For smart Beijingers, traditional Chinese style is the latest must-have.

0:11:570:12:02

Designs are inspired by the fabrics and decoration

0:12:050:12:08

worn at court during China's imperial past.

0:12:080:12:12

Tang dynasty jackets are a top seller for men as well as women.

0:12:130:12:18

Even former president Jiang Zemin has been seen wearing one.

0:12:180:12:21

During Mao's leadership, to wear such clothes would have been frowned on as bourgeois.

0:12:240:12:30

Now, political correctness is out, glamour most definitely in.

0:12:300:12:35

This woman is a tailor by training.

0:12:410:12:44

She's seen the potential of merging Chinese style

0:12:440:12:47

with the high-fashion look, and she's rapidly gathering a clientele of business and media people.

0:12:470:12:53

Maybe the fashion tables of the world are turning -

0:13:520:13:56

someday, perhaps East will lead, and West will no longer be best.
