Have you ever seen snails in the garden or in the park?

Snails like to munch...

leaves, especially lettuce.

On their back they carry a shell,

and they can curl up inside the shell to keep safe.

And look, their bodies look very soft and squidgy,

and they have eyes at the end of the sticky-out bits at the front.

They slide on their tummies.

They slide on slime made by their bodies

and they leave a trail of slime behind them.

Let's put this over here on the tree so we can enjoy the snails inside.

Snails move very slowly.

Slimey, slidey, slowly.

Move slimey, slidey, slowly with us.

Slimey, slidey, slowly.

Snails also curl up into a ball like this.

Ooh! And then you can stretch out

And I'm going to pop...

my finger under this end.

And look - a slimey, slidey snail.

Chris?

Oh, Pui, I love your snail!

-Would you like one?

-Oh, yes please! Thank you.

I'm going to tear one end of this paper, like this,

and then curl...

the pencil around the other end for the snail's shell.

You could make one of these.

Get cosy and comfy, sit down with your toy.

Here comes a tale for us all to enjoy.

One day Teddington Bear asked Miss Mouse

if she'd care to look at the lovely lettuces that he'd grown from seed

in the vegetable patch

"Oh, yes, indeed, I'd be ever so pleased," squeaked Miss Mouse.

So down the garden path they went,

feeling a great deal of excitement.

"Oh, a-rum tum tiddle-tiddle tiddledy tum,

"I like gardening, gardening is fun!" sang Teddington.

When Miss Mouse saw the vegetable patch,

she threw up her paws and squeaked.

"Fancy that! They're the loveliest lettuces I've ever seen!

"They're leafishly leafy and gorgeously green."

But Teddington wasn't listening

because something suspicious was bothering him.

He couldn't be sure, but he had an idea

that one leafy lettuce had disappeared!

He looked a bit closer, he had a good ogle...

Yes, one leafy lettuce was utterly gobbled!

"Oh, my goodness! Look at this!

"I'm only left with the stumpy bit!" cried Teddington,

holding up the stumpy bit.

"My dearest Teddington, do calm down.

"There's plenty of lettuce to go round." squeaked Miss Mouse.

"Yes, I suppose so," said Teddington.

But the next day when Teddington looked at them,

he suspected the same thing had happened again.

He couldn't be sure, but he had an idea

that one more leafy lettuce had disappeared.

Oh dear, oh dear.

He looked a bit closer, he had a good ogle,

and yes, one lettuce was utterly gobbled!

"Miss Mouse! Miss Mouse! Another one's gone!

"There'll be no lettuce left before too long!"

cried Teddington, holding up the stump.

"My dearest Teddington, don't be upset.

"You still have plenty of lettuces left," squeaked Miss Mouse.

"But I think this will happen again and again

"if we don't find out who's eating them,"

said Teddington with a sigh.

So they searched in the bushes,

they searched in the hedge,

they tried to find out who was eating their veg.

"I can't find anyone or thing

"that looks like it's been nibbling," squeaked Miss Mouse.

"Hmm. These stones are all that I can see,

"they're ever so small and swirly-whirly," mumbled Teddington.

But suddenly he let out a shout

for he noticed the stones were moving about!

"I think I've found the lettuce stealers.

"These swirly stones have little feelers!" he cried.

"They're not really stones at all! They're snails"

squeaked little Miss Mouse

with a twitch of her tail.

"They like my lettuces," Teddington giggled

as he watched them munch and nibble.

"They were hiding in their shells, but now they're hungry, I can tell."

Teddington Bear wanted to share. He thought it was only fair.

So the snails had some lettuces to munch,

while the toys had their very own lettuce leaf lunch.

Oh, Teddington.

Those cheeky snails were hiding, weren't they?

In their shells.

These snails are hiding too.

Perhaps they're all hiding.
