GUITAR AND DRUMS PLAY

0:00:020:00:05

It was reported recently that Bernstein has banned

0:00:190:00:22

the version of his song America as performed by The Nice.

0:00:220:00:25

He's reported to have said that they'd turned it into an anti-American dirge.

0:00:250:00:30

We asked him if this was true.

0:00:300:00:31

-The Nice?

-You haven't heard of them?

-No.

This Echoplex, here... which, uh... What it does is it takes, it's like a tape recorder.

0:37:000:37:07

And it takes, the output signal is then fed back into the record heads, so you just get a repeated echo.

0:37:070:37:13

Uh, for instance...

0:37:130:37:15

NOTES ECHO REPEATEDLY

0:37:160:37:18

And you can alter the strength of the repeats, the number of repeats, many more than that.

0:37:220:37:26

Or increase the speed at which the repeats occur.

0:37:310:37:34

So far that it almost in fact becomes reverb.

The weird and wonderful sounds of Soft Machine who next Saturday night

0:42:220:42:26

are appearing at The Rainbow, Finsbury Park.

0:42:260:42:28

Well, although perhaps not one of the best known bands in Britain,

0:42:300:42:33

it's true to say that Caravan are certainly one of the most consistent.

0:42:330:42:37

We've had a lot of letters asking us to show them,

0:42:370:42:39

so in response, here's some film of the band with one of the songs from their new album.

It's one o'clock, time for lunch. Fandy, dandy day.

When the sun beats down

0:49:580:49:59

and I lie on the bench I can always hear them talk.

0:49:590:50:03

# There's always been Ethel

0:50:050:50:08

# "Jacob wake up you've got to tidy your room now"

0:50:080:50:11

# And then Mr Lewis

0:50:140:50:17

# "Isn't it time that he was out on his own?"

0:50:170:50:22

# Over the garden wall, two little lovebirds

0:50:220:50:27

# Cuckoo to you

0:50:270:50:28

# Keep them mowing blades sharp

0:50:280:50:30

ALL: # I know what I like

0:50:300:50:35

# And I like what I know

0:50:350:50:40

# Getting better in your wardrobe

0:50:410:50:48

# Stepping one beyond your show

0:50:480:50:53

# Your show

0:50:530:51:00

# Na, na, na, na

0:51:030:51:09

# Na-na-na, na, na

0:51:090:51:11

# Sunday night Mr Farmer called

0:51:110:51:13

# Said "Listen son you're wasting time"

0:51:130:51:16

# "There's a future for you in the fire-escape trade, come up to town"

0:51:160:51:22

# But I remembered a voice from the past

0:51:220:51:25

# "Gambling only pays when you're winning"

0:51:250:51:28

# I had to old Miss Mort for schooling a failure

# Keep them mower blades sharp

GUITAR MIMICS LAWNMOWER

0:53:500:53:53

You hardly need a life history of this band except that, 13 years after its inception,

0:53:570:54:02

they're still going, albeit after countless numbers of different line-ups and break-ups.

0:54:020:54:06

Robert Fripp, its founder and guitarist, says King Crimson is a way of doing things.

0:54:060:54:11

The current way of doing things includes Bill Bruford on drums,

0:54:110:54:14

Tony Levin the acclaimed American bass player and Adrian Belew of Talking Heads on guitar.

0:54:140:54:19

The band's been working their way across the world over the past few months before coming to rest

0:54:190:54:23

here in Hammersmith, not a hundred miles or so from their base in Wimborne, Dorset,

0:54:230:54:28

which Fripp still insists is the centre of the universe. Please welcome King Crimson.
