This is a tune that I wrote in 1967 and it's the song that got me a...

record deal with Apple Records. I... I played it for...

for Peter Asher, who is right up there.

I played for Peter Asher and he, er, played it for Paul McCartney

and George Harrison, who signed me to Apple Records.

The first person to sign.

It was my big break.

It was a huge moment for me. It was as if somebody had opened a door

and the rest of my life were on the other side of it.

Which happens often, actually, but usually in a negative way.

Anyway, this is a song that, er...

got me signed.

But, um, anyway, this was written at a time when

we had a young child and I think another one on the way

and, um, we were kinda struggling along, Gerry had a day job as a chemist.

And don't you know that this was the one that allowed him to quit his day job, which I'm still not sure

Well, you know, it's time for another song.

That tune, I wrote it behind the wheel of an automobile.

The first time... The first verse was written driving down to North Carolina.

I was going down to see my...

I'd been... I'd been abroad for a year.

I'd... Well, I'd been overseas.

LAUGHTER

Been over in London for a year and I came home and I wanted to see my family

cos I wanted to catch up.

You know, you stay away from your family and you forget what they're really like

and you go visit them.

So, uh, anyway, my brother Alex and his wife Brenda had a kid in the time that I'd been away.

Just take your eye off them for a second...

They defied.

Anyway...my brother Alex named this child,

in a moment of weakness, he named it after me - little baby James -

and I was driving to see this kid, this little varmint, for the first time.

Yeah, it's touching... if you like children!

So, uh, I was driving down to see little baby James

and I was trying to figure out what kind of song would be a good song to sing to him.

It had to be a cowboy lullaby, you know.

I heard it for the first time standing right there where that green and red Christmas-y light is.

Um, I used to stand out here.

I can't remember anything for one year either side...

but I remember standing there and hearing Carole play this song.

It was, uh... I worked it up on the guitar and got a version of it and...

In an amazing act of generosity,

just plain nothing but generosity, kindness,

she let me cut this tune first, release it first

and I was amazed because she was cutting Tapestry at the time...

..and that she would...

You know, just that she would let go, what I thought was maybe the best pop tune ever written.

I was just amazed.

I didn't realise at the time, I'd be singing that song every single night for the rest of my life.

But it's a great song to be known for

and I've travelled around the world on this tune.

So I thank Carole for it often when she's not around

and I'm going to thank her right now for it.
