ALL: Amen. I warmly welcome you all

:04:10.:04:20.
:04:20.:04:30.

We cover the whole of South London and the county of Kent. I welcome

:04:30.:04:34.

to all of you, watching on television. As we prepare to

:04:34.:04:39.

celebrate the great feast of the Incarnation, when God became man in

:04:39.:04:45.

the person of Jesus Christ. He came as our saviour and Redeemer, to

:04:45.:04:49.

reconcile us to God and to one another and to offer us the gift of

:04:49.:04:54.

eternal life. Tonight, we open our hearts to

:04:54.:04:58.

welcome the God who loves us so much.

:04:58.:05:04.

And to pray especially for all of those who are alone this Christmas,

:05:04.:05:08.

or are anxious or suffering in any way. We pray that God may grant

:05:08.:05:15.

them his gifts of hope and joy and peace in mind and in heart.

:05:15.:05:22.

And we begin our celebration with the blessing of the crib and the

:05:22.:05:30.

Dear friends in Christ, we meet to celebrate

:05:30.:05:32.

let us pray that God will bless this crib,

:05:32.:05:35.

that all who worship his Son, born of the Virgin Mary,

:05:35.:05:37.

may come to share his life in glory.

:05:37.:05:43.

God our Father, on this night your Son Jesus Christ

:05:43.:05:46.

was born of the Virgin Mary for us and for our salvation,

:05:46.:05:52.

bless this crib which we have prepared

:05:52.:05:55.

to celebrate that holy birth,

:05:55.:05:59.

may all who see it be strengthened in faith,

:05:59.:06:02.

and receive the fullness of life he came to bring,

:06:02.:06:05.

who is alive and reigns for ever. Amen.

:06:05.:06:15.
:06:15.:06:33.

Christ the Light of the world

:06:33.:06:36.

has come to dispel the darkness of our hearts.

:06:36.:06:39.

In his light may we give glory to God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

:06:39.:06:46.

ALL: Amen.

Let us pray.

:14:22.:14:30.

O God, who have made this most sacred night radiant

:14:30.:14:34.

with the splendour of the true light,

:14:34.:14:36.

grant, we pray, that we,

:14:36.:14:39.

who have known the mysteries of his light on earth,

:14:39.:14:42.

may also delight in his gladness in heaven.

:14:42.:14:46.

Who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

:14:46.:14:50.

one God, for ever and ever. ALL: Amen.

:14:50.:15:00.
:15:00.:15:02.

A reading from the prophet Isaiah.

:15:02.:15:07.

The people that walked in darkness has seen a great light;

:15:07.:15:10.

on those who live in a land of deep shadow a light has shone.

:15:10.:15:14.

You have made their gladness greater,

:15:14.:15:16.

you have made their joy increase;

:15:17.:15:19.

they rejoice in your presence as men rejoice at harvest time,

:15:19.:15:24.

as men are happy when they are dividing the spoils.

:15:24.:15:27.

For the yoke that was weighing on him,

:15:27.:15:30.

the bar across his shoulders, the rod of his oppressor,

:15:30.:15:34.

these you break as on the day of Midian.

:15:34.:15:37.

For all the footgear of battle, every cloak rolled in blood,

:15:37.:15:41.

is burnt, and consumed by fire.

:15:41.:15:45.

For there is a child born for us, a son given to us

:15:45.:15:49.

and dominion is laid on His shoulders;

:15:49.:15:52.

and this is the name they give him: Wonder-Counsellor, Mighty-God,

:15:52.:15:58.

Eternal-Father, Prince-of-Peace.

:15:58.:16:02.

Wide is his dominion in a peace that has no end,

:16:02.:16:06.

for the throne of David and for his royal power,

:16:06.:16:09.

which he establishes and makes secure

:16:09.:16:12.

in justice and integrity.

:16:12.:16:15.

From this time onwards and for ever,

:16:15.:16:18.

the jealous love of the Lord of Hosts will do this.

:16:18.:16:21.

The word of the Lord.

:16:21.:16:23.

ALL: Thanks be to God.

A reading from the letter of St Paul to Titus.

:19:06.:19:13.

God's grace has been revealed,

:19:13.:19:16.

and it has made salvation possible for the whole human race

:19:16.:19:19.

and taught us that what we have to do

:19:19.:19:22.

is to give up everything that does not lead to God,

:19:22.:19:26.

and all our worldly ambitions; we must be self-restrained

:19:26.:19:31.

and live good and religious lives here in this present world,

:19:31.:19:36.

while we are waiting in hope for the blessing which will come

:19:36.:19:41.

with the Appearing of the glory

:19:41.:19:43.

of our great God and saviour Christ Jesus.

:19:43.:19:47.

He sacrificed himself for us

:19:47.:19:49.

in order to set us free from all wickednes

:19:50.:19:54.

and to purify a people so that it could be his very own

:19:54.:19:58.

and would have no ambition except to do good.

:22:27.:22:37.
:22:37.:22:45.

Caesar Augustus issued a decree

:22:45.:22:48.

for a census of the whole world to be taken.

:22:48.:22:52.

This census - the first -

:22:52.:22:55.

took place while Quirinius was governor of Syria,

:22:55.:22:59.

and everyone went to his own town to be registered.

:22:59.:23:03.

So Joseph set out from the town of Nazareth in Galilee

:23:03.:23:08.

and travelled up to Judaea, to the town of David called Bethlehem,

:23:08.:23:12.

since he was of David's House and line,

:23:13.:23:15.

in order to be registered together with Mary, his betrothed,

:23:15.:23:20.

who was with child.

:23:20.:23:22.

While they were there the time came for her have her child,

:23:23.:23:27.

and she gave birth to a son, her first born.

:23:27.:23:32.

She wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger

:23:32.:23:36.

because there was no room for them at the inn.

:23:36.:23:41.

In the countryside close by

:23:41.:23:44.

there were shepherds who lived in the fields

:23:44.:23:46.

and took it in turns to watch their flocks during the night.

:23:46.:23:51.

The angel of the Lord appeared to them

:23:51.:23:54.

and the glory of the Lord shone round them.

:23:54.:23:57.

They were terrified, but the angel said, "Do not be afraid.

:23:57.:24:03.

"Listen, I bring you news of great joy,

:24:03.:24:07.

"a joy to be shared by the whole people.

:24:07.:24:10.

"Today in the town of David a saviour has been born to you;

:24:11.:24:15.

"he is Christ the Lord.

:24:15.:24:18.

"And here is a sign for you:

:24:19.:24:21.

"you will find a baby wrapped in swaddling clothes

:24:21.:24:24.

"and lying in a manger."

:24:24.:24:28.

And suddenly with the angel

:24:28.:24:30.

there was a great throng of the heavenly host,

:24:30.:24:33.

praising God and singing:

:24:33.:24:35.

"Glory to God in the highest heaven,

:24:35.:24:38.

"and peace to men who enjoy his favour."

:24:38.:24:41.

The Gospel of the Lord.

:24:41.:24:47.

ALL: Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

:24:47.:24:54.

ORGAN FANFARE

:24:54.:25:04.
:25:04.:25:36.

My dear brothers and sisters,

:25:36.:25:40.

when we look back at the news headlines over the past year,

:25:40.:25:44.

many of them have been anything but good.

:25:44.:25:47.

There has been a continuous stream of bad news -

:25:47.:25:50.

from the ongoing tragedy of the war in Afghanistan

:25:50.:25:53.

to the civil disturbances and deaths

:25:53.:25:56.

in countries involved in the so-called "Arab Spring".

:25:56.:26:00.

We have witnessed a series of natural disasters -

:26:00.:26:05.

earthquakes and floods in Japan and Asia, famine in East Africa,

:26:05.:26:10.

and in this past week

:26:10.:26:13.

more devastating floods in the Philippines

:26:13.:26:15.

and yet another earthquake in Christchurch, New Zealand.

:26:15.:26:21.

These natural disasters have occurred in the shadow

:26:21.:26:25.

of the deepening financial crisis and global economic recession

:26:25.:26:30.

which has brought its own suffering to so many -

:26:30.:26:34.

growing unemployment, especially amongst the young,

:26:34.:26:38.

rising prices and a growing gap between the rich and the poor.

:26:38.:26:44.

And in England last summer

:26:44.:26:48.

we saw appalling scenes of rioting, violence and destruction

:26:48.:26:53.

by a small number of criminals and disaffected young people.

:26:53.:26:59.

The list could go on!

:26:59.:27:02.

Yet in the midst of this bleak and depressing picture

:27:02.:27:06.

we have also witnessed

:27:06.:27:08.

some wonderful examples of light and hope.

:27:08.:27:12.

Alerted to the famine in Africa,

:27:12.:27:15.

within weeks the people of this country

:27:15.:27:17.

donated more than 40 million to help the starving,

:27:17.:27:21.

and more recently,

:27:21.:27:24.

another 27 million for the BBC's Children in Need appeal

:27:24.:27:29.

despite the severe economic difficulties we all face.

:27:29.:27:35.

Following the riots here in London,

:27:35.:27:38.

we saw local communities spontaneously getting together

:27:38.:27:42.

to help clear up the damage

:27:42.:27:45.

and offering comfort and help to the victims.

:27:45.:27:49.

And many of us will have experienced acts of goodness and kindness

:27:49.:27:53.

at a more personal level -

:27:53.:27:56.

in our families and in our neighbourhoods day by day.

:27:56.:28:00.

So despite all the gloom and anxiety,

:28:00.:28:04.

the light and goodness of the human spirit has continued to shine out

:28:04.:28:09.

in the midst of adversity.

:28:09.:28:12.

Those acts of good neighbourliness remind us

:28:12.:28:15.

that although we human beings can be selfish and self-seeking,

:28:15.:28:20.

our human nature is basically good.

:28:20.:28:25.

And as we celebrate this wonderful feast of the Incarnation,

:28:25.:28:29.

we see why that is.

:28:29.:28:33.

For tonight we rejoice in the fact that the almighty and merciful God,

:28:33.:28:38.

who created us in his own image and likeness,

:28:38.:28:41.

reached out in love and became one like us in all things but sin.

:28:41.:28:48.

Isaiah prophesied that unique moment in history -

:28:48.:28:53.

"The people that walked in darkness has seen a great light,

:28:53.:28:57.

"on those who live in a land of deep shadow,

:28:57.:29:01.

"a light has shone...

:29:01.:29:03.

"for there is a child born for us,

:29:03.:29:06.

"a son given to us."

:29:06.:29:10.

On the night that Christ was born,

:29:10.:29:13.

Luke tells us that the angel appeared to the shepherds and said,

:29:13.:29:16.

"Do not be afraid.

:29:16.:29:18.

"Listen, I bring you news of great joy,

:29:18.:29:21.

"a joy to be shared by the whole people.

:29:21.:29:24.

"Today in the town of David a saviour has been born to you,

:29:24.:29:29.

"he is Christ the Lord."

:29:29.:29:34.

He is, in the words of St John,

:29:34.:29:36.

"a light that shines in the dark,

:29:36.:29:39.

"a light that darkness could not overpower",

:29:39.:29:43.

because the truth is that in that vulnerable, new-born child,

:29:43.:29:48.

"We see our God made visible

:29:48.:29:51.

"and so are caught up in the God we cannot see."

:29:52.:29:57.

He came to save us from our self-centredness and isolation,

:29:57.:30:02.

and to show us through his own example

:30:02.:30:05.

how to reach out to others in that love which is always life-giving.

:30:05.:30:10.

He came to meet us where we are,

:30:10.:30:13.

and immersed himself fully in our confused and messy world,

:30:13.:30:17.

asking us to open our hearts to welcome him.

:30:17.:30:22.

Reflecting on that

:30:22.:30:25.

reminded me of the famous painting by Holman Hunt

:30:25.:30:28.

entitled Christ The Light Of The World.

:30:28.:30:31.

In that painting,

:30:31.:30:34.

Christ is depicted standing in the darkness of the night,

:30:34.:30:38.

with a lantern in his hand, knocking at a door.

:30:38.:30:42.

The door is covered by climbing plants and brambles,

:30:42.:30:46.

and clearly hasn't been opened for a very long time.

:30:46.:30:50.

And when you look more closely at the door,

:30:50.:30:54.

you see that there is no handle on it.

:30:54.:30:57.

Was this an oversight by the artist, a mistake?

:30:57.:31:00.

No, it wasn't.

:31:00.:31:03.

It was a deliberate omission,

:31:03.:31:05.

because Holman Hunt's insight

:31:05.:31:07.

was based on the words of the Book of Revelation,

:31:07.:31:11.

Christ "stands at the door and knocks".

:31:11.:31:14.

He longs to come in, but waits patiently to be admitted,

:31:14.:31:19.

because the door to our hearts can only be opened from the inside.

:31:19.:31:25.

So, if there are times when we feel afraid to approach God,

:31:25.:31:31.

through guilt, through apprehension, or feelings of unworthiness,

:31:31.:31:36.

we need to take to heart again

:31:36.:31:39.

the message of the angel to the shepherds -

:31:39.:31:41.

"Do not be afraid."

:31:41.:31:43.

Why?

:31:43.:31:45.

Because in this new-born child in Bethlehem,

:31:45.:31:48.

we are invited to see and experience

:31:48.:31:50.

the sheer tenderness of the love and compassion

:31:50.:31:54.

that he offers unconditionally

:31:54.:31:57.

to all who are willing to open their hearts to him.

:31:57.:32:01.

And that love has the power to transform our lives,

:32:01.:32:05.

and enable us to love others as he has first loved us.

:32:05.:32:11.

The challenge for each one of us

:32:11.:32:14.

is to allow Jesus Christ to be born again in our own hearts,

:32:14.:32:19.

to allow his love to become incarnate in us

:32:19.:32:22.

and share it with others.

:32:22.:32:24.

Then we become lights which bring hope to a world

:32:25.:32:27.

which at times seems to grow so dark with selfishness and sin.

:32:27.:32:34.

He calls us to continue his work of love

:32:35.:32:37.

by making our own unique contribution

:32:37.:32:39.

to the task of healing human brokenness,

:32:39.:32:42.

to fostering peace and harmony in human relationships,

:32:42.:32:46.

and to bringing a little of his light

:32:47.:32:50.

into the darkness and confusion of the world in which we live.

:32:50.:32:54.

We don't need to be anxious or afraid,

:32:54.:32:58.

because the great joy of Christmas,

:32:58.:33:01.

the good news that we celebrate tonight is simple yet profound -

:33:01.:33:07.

that no matter how deep or oppressive

:33:07.:33:09.

the darkness in our world or in our own hearts,

:33:09.:33:13.

the light of God's love and compassion

:33:13.:33:16.

is always brighter, stronger and more enduring.

:33:16.:33:21.

That is the good news we celebrate tonight.

:33:22.:33:31.

You are indeed Holy, O Lord, the fount of all holiness.

:53:05.:53:11.

Make holy, therefore, these gifts, we pray,

by sending down your Spirit upon them like the dewfall,

so that they may become for us

At the time he was betrayed and entered willingly into his Passion,

he took bread and, giving thanks, broke it,
