Tony Bennett's 85th Birthday Concert

I'm going to start by name-dropping, if I may.

I was a great friend of the magnificent handsomest man

in the whole world, Cary Grant, and he said, "When you play Britain

"make sure you play the Palladium," so I said on my 85th birthday

I'd like to celebrate it by playing the Palladium

and that's how it happened.

Through the years I've been very fortunate to have

a lot of records that sold very well

and so I do a whole section of songs that the public's familiar with.

There's some songs from my Duets album

and also just good performing songs,

songs that I know work for an audience, that the audience likes.

It has to be a great honour to have been asked to do this show

because it's his 85th birthday celebrations,

which I think that's wonderful really

and that he's singing so phenomenally well.

It makes you feel good.

Just such an honour to sing with Tony,

and I'm so excited that he asked me to perform with him.

His voice is amazing.

It's got so much texture and power

and it's always nice to sing with people that have that in their voice

and he just is an amazing singer to sing with.

It's such an intimate theatre and what I love about it is you could

feel the citizens of Britain when they come here.

This is a very special theatre to them.

This is the way they like to see a show.

Rosemary Clooney and I were the first American Idols.

It's really true, we started out on a very early television show

in the United States.

And it was our big day. We had no idea. Pearl Bailey saw me.

She was doing a show down in Greenwich Village in Manhattan.

She booked me into her show. Bob Hope was at the Paramount Theatre.

With Jane Russell and Les Brown's great big band.

He came down to see the show and he got a big kick out of Pearl Bailey.

He got a big kick out of me because I was the only white kid in the whole show.

He said "Come over here, son." He said, "What's your name?"

I said, "Joe Bari."

He said, "Oh, wait a minute. Bari is a city in Italy,

"that's a phoney showbusiness name. What's your real name?"

I said, "Well, it's rather, well, it's Anthony Dominick Benedetto.

He said "Well, that's a little long for the marquee."

He said, "Let's economise and call you Tony Bennett."

Bob Hope gave me my name, Tony Bennett. Wow!
