0:01:010:01:04

# Can I have my money back please, sir?

0:01:040:01:07

# I don't hear what you're sayin' Don't care what you're doin'

# Can I have my money back please, sir?

0:01:130:01:15

# Went to the movies and the movie broke down

0:01:170:01:20

# The picture on the screen was going round and round

0:01:200:01:23

# Spent all I had getting in to see the show

0:01:230:01:26

# So I walked up to the man and I said I'd like to go so

0:01:260:01:28

# Can I have my money back Money back, money back?

0:01:280:01:31

# Can I have my money back please, sir?

0:01:450:01:47

# Took up his religion and forgot about the rest

0:01:470:01:50

# Then I heard another one calling out my name

0:01:500:01:53

# When I took a closer look he was just the same

# Saying that we live in a democratic land

0:02:370:02:40

0:03:110:03:14

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:03:240:03:28

Well, thank you!

0:03:280:03:31

That was the opening song, Can I Have My Money Back?,

0:03:310:03:33

the title track from Gerald's first album,

0:03:330:03:36

back in 1971, and...

0:03:360:03:39

..that album was made at a time when we were forming Stealers Wheel

0:03:410:03:45

and we were all living in a house together

0:03:450:03:47

in Sandhurst Road in Tunbridge Wells.

0:03:470:03:51

And there was a very small person was moving around the house at that time

0:03:510:03:55

and that was Martha, who is with me here.

0:03:550:03:57

APPLAUSE And...

0:03:570:03:59

We'd like to think of this as a commemoration, yes,

0:04:040:04:08

but a celebration, as well, of the life and work

0:04:080:04:11

of Gerry Rafferty.

0:04:110:04:12

APPLAUSE

0:04:120:04:15

Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome to the stage, The Proclaimers!

0:04:260:04:30

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:04:300:04:32

# Oh, Mattie, open up the door That's right I'm home again

0:05:030:05:11

# You've got a big surprise in store Turn round and count to ten

0:05:110:05:19

# Wait till you see what I got you Well, you'll see it's a magic thing

0:05:190:05:26

# It's like an old mandolin man

0:05:260:05:29

# You just wind him up and he starts to sing

0:05:290:05:33

# I've been away for quite a while And I want to hear all your news

0:05:330:05:41

# Speak to me, let me see you smile Cos I've had those homesick blues

0:05:410:05:48

# When I go down to the city

0:05:480:05:52

# I just don't know wrong from right

0:05:520:05:57

# When I go back to you, Mattie Well, you make me see the light

0:05:570:06:03

# Aih, aih, aih, eeh

0:06:030:06:11

# Aih, aih, aih, eeh

0:06:110:06:19

# Love is a singular thing It can take you up or bring you down

0:06:190:06:25

# Yes, love is a song that I sing

0:06:250:06:29

# So come on now, Mattie Listen to the sound

0:06:290:06:33

# When you grow up we'll sit and talk Of how things used to be

0:06:340:06:41

# I'll be a grand old man of rock With all these memories. #

0:06:410:06:49

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:07:360:07:38

-Thank you very much.

-Thank you!

-The Proclaimers, everybody!

0:07:380:07:42

Rab and Gerry and I were very good friends. Billy Connolly...

0:07:430:07:47

and, particularly, there was a hardcore of about six or seven of us

0:07:470:07:51

used to travel around in Scotland and make music together unofficially.

0:07:510:07:56

You know, this thing about, we're doing tonight,

0:07:560:07:59

we kind of did that in an informal way.

0:07:590:08:01

Sitting with our backs against a wall,

0:08:010:08:03

sitting on a floor in people's houses singing in three-part harmonies.

0:08:030:08:07

We, kind of, we grew up on that kind of thing.

0:08:070:08:10

This is brilliant being here.

0:08:110:08:14

A room full of Gerry Rafferty fans!

0:08:140:08:17

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:08:170:08:18

Thank you very much.

0:08:220:08:23

You know I'd swap every single thing to have him sitting in the front row.

0:08:230:08:28

Thank you very much.

0:08:300:08:31

This is a song Martha asked me if I would sing tonight.

0:08:310:08:34

# Well, we sit in empty rooms and dream our lives away

0:09:070:09:13

# While the spirits come and go without a sound

0:09:140:09:18

# And just like you and me They're tryin' to find a way

0:09:190:09:24

# Find a way Find a way home

0:09:240:09:30

# There's a full moon in the sky But that don't worry me

0:09:320:09:38

# I don't ever hang my soul Out on the line

0:09:390:09:42

# When the witchin' hour comes I always fly away

0:09:440:09:49

# Fly away Fly away home

0:09:490:09:55

# There's a light in the city That comes down from above

0:09:580:10:04

# Leavin' you as wise as a serpent Harmless as a dove

0:10:040:10:09

# Don't blow your tomorrows Don't throw away your love

0:10:090:10:15

# You've got to be as wise as a serpent

0:10:150:10:19

# Harmless as a dove

0:10:190:10:25

# Now you once asked me why we can't communicate

0:10:550:11:00

# But it doesn't always pay to tell the truth

0:11:020:11:06

# If I told you right now You'd only run away

0:11:070:11:12

# Run away Run away home

0:11:120:11:18

# So we sit in empty rooms and dream our lives away

0:11:200:11:26

# While the spirits come and go without a sound

0:11:260:11:31

# Yeah just like you and me They're tryin' to find a way

0:11:320:11:37

# Find a way Find a way home

0:11:370:11:44

# There's a light in the city that comes down from above

0:11:450:11:51

# Leavin' you as wise as a serpent Harmless as a dove

0:11:510:11:57

# Don't blow your tomorrows Don't throw away your love

0:11:570:12:02

# You've got to be as wise as a serpent

0:12:020:12:06

# Harmless as a dove

0:12:060:12:12

# Ahh, oh, oh. #

0:12:210:12:29

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:12:400:12:43

When I was in high school and it was at this, that sort of,

0:12:480:12:52

period of music when there was a lot of bad music on the radio, you know?

0:12:520:12:55

And then Gerry was one of the few, I mean, I would hear, you know,

0:12:550:12:58

Baker Street and Right Down The Line and it was...

0:12:580:13:01

I always liked melodic music and so that appealed to me, right?

0:13:010:13:05

So, I was always curious about him and then...

0:13:050:13:07

You know, I didn't realise at the time that he was also the guy

0:13:070:13:09

from Stealers Wheel, as well,

0:13:090:13:11

and, of course, I heard that song growing up a lot, too.

0:13:110:13:13

And, erm... But it was just one of those, erm,

0:13:130:13:16

yeah, I was just, sort of, drawn to it, you know.

0:13:160:13:19

Well, Right Down The Line has always been my favourite song by Gerry Rafferty,

0:13:190:13:23

so that was one of the ones, when they first asked me, I was, like, "I hope that's not taken."

0:13:230:13:27

# You know I need your love

0:13:570:14:00

# You got that hold over me

0:14:000:14:03

# As long as I got your love

0:14:040:14:07

# You know that I'll never leave

0:14:070:14:10

# When I wanted you to share my life

0:14:110:14:15

# I had no doubt in my mind

0:14:150:14:18

# It's been you, woman

0:14:180:14:22

# Right down the line

0:14:220:14:26

# I know the way I lean on you

0:14:280:14:31

# Only you can see

0:14:320:14:35

# The changes that I've been through

0:14:360:14:40

# Have left their mark on me

0:14:400:14:42

# You've been as constant as the Northern Star

0:14:430:14:47

# The brightest light that shines

0:14:480:14:50

# It's been you woman

0:14:500:14:54

# Right down the line

0:14:540:14:58

# I just want to say this is my way

0:15:010:15:05

# Of telling you everything I could never say before

0:15:050:15:12

# Yeah, this is my way

0:15:160:15:19

# Of telling you every day

0:15:190:15:23

# I'm loving you so much more

0:15:230:15:26

# You believed in me

0:15:260:15:29

# Through my darkest night

0:15:290:15:32

# Put something better inside of me

0:15:320:15:36

# You brought me into the light

0:15:360:15:39

# Threw away all those crazy dreams

0:15:400:15:44

# I put them all behind

0:15:440:15:46

# It's been you, woman

0:15:460:15:51

# Right down the line

0:15:510:15:55

# I just want to say this is my way

0:16:290:16:35

# Of telling you everything I could never say before

0:16:350:16:42

# Yeah, this is my way

0:16:440:16:48

# Of telling you every day I'm loving you so much more

0:16:480:16:55

# If I should doubt myself

0:16:550:16:58

# If I'm losing ground

0:16:580:17:01

# I won't turn to someone else

0:17:010:17:05

# They'd only let me down

0:17:050:17:08

# When I wanted you to share my life

0:17:090:17:12

# I had no doubt in my mind

0:17:120:17:15

# It's been you woman

0:17:150:17:20

# Right down the line

0:17:200:17:23

# Ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh

0:17:270:17:33

# Ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh

0:17:330:17:39

# Ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh

0:17:430:17:49

# You got a hold on me

0:17:510:17:54

# Right down the line. #

0:17:540:18:00

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:18:020:18:04

Thank you very much!

0:18:040:18:05

Thank you.

0:18:060:18:08

Martha, Gerry's daughter, and I had a discussion after Gerry's funeral,

0:18:090:18:15

after the funeral,

0:18:150:18:17

about how we should, kind of, preserve some kind of legacy

0:18:170:18:21

and the idea came around to it being,

0:18:210:18:23

"It has to be something based around his song", really.

0:18:230:18:26

Because the songs were what Gerry Rafferty lived for, that was his artwork,

0:18:260:18:31

and he expressed himself greatly through songs.

0:18:310:18:34

And so building a concert around his work

0:18:340:18:39

and inviting a number of interesting artists to come and perform them

0:18:390:18:43

was the order of the day.

0:18:430:18:44

# Moonlight and gold

0:19:380:19:42

# Midsummer magic When the night meets the day

0:19:430:19:50

# And songbirds greet the dawn

0:19:500:19:53

# You lie awake

0:19:560:20:01

# You watch and wonder While the moon fades away

0:20:010:20:07

# And one more day is born

0:20:070:20:11

# Tides keep on turning

0:20:130:20:16

# While hearts keep on yearning

0:20:160:20:22

# To be where they know they belong

0:20:220:20:29

# All on a new day You see in a new way

0:20:310:20:38

# The things you've been leaning upon

0:20:380:20:46

# Moonlight and gold

0:20:530:20:57

# I will awaken to a love that runs deeper

0:20:570:21:04

# Than the need in me

0:21:040:21:08

# While you are sleeping The new day comes creeping

0:21:440:21:51

# And life keeps on passing you by

0:21:510:21:59

# Magic unfolds When the blue meets the gold

0:22:010:22:08

# And the sun comes to open your eyes

0:22:080:22:16

# Moonlight and gold

0:22:230:22:25

# Midsummer magic As the night turns to day

0:22:270:22:33

# And songbirds greet the dawn

0:22:330:22:37

# You lie awake

0:22:400:22:44

# You watch and wonder While the moon fades away

0:22:440:22:50

# And one more day is born

0:22:500:22:55

# Moonlight and gold. #

0:23:310:23:36

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:23:360:23:38

Thank you.

0:23:410:23:42

Thanks very much.

0:23:520:23:55

# Late again

0:24:210:24:23

# When I get home

0:24:270:24:31

# You'll be waiting

0:24:310:24:34

# Still you know

0:24:390:24:41

# There ain't no use In you complaining

0:24:440:24:51

# I know that I

0:24:570:25:00

# Can show some respect

0:25:020:25:05

# Especially when I'm wrong

0:25:060:25:09

# But when I get back

0:25:140:25:17

# I know you'll say

0:25:190:25:22

# You've been away too long

0:25:230:25:26

# Ooh

0:25:310:25:35

# I wonder why I stay

0:25:350:25:41

# When everybody's gone

0:25:410:25:45

# Yeah

0:25:450:25:46

# There's always something there

0:25:460:25:52

# To keep me hanging on

0:25:520:25:54

# Ooh, woo-oh-oh

0:25:540:25:59

# La-la-la

0:26:010:26:03

# La-la-la

0:26:040:26:05

# La-la-la

0:26:070:26:08

# La-la-la

0:26:100:26:11

# Ooh

0:26:190:26:22

# I wonder why I stay

0:26:220:26:27

# When everybody's gone away

0:26:290:26:34

# There's always something there

0:26:340:26:40

# To keep me hanging on

0:26:400:26:42

# Ooh

0:26:420:26:47

# La-la-la

0:26:480:26:50

# La-la-la

0:26:520:26:53

# La-la-la

0:26:550:26:56

# La-la-la

0:26:580:26:59

# I know that I

0:27:070:27:09

# Could show some respect

0:27:120:27:14

# Especially when I'm wrong

0:27:160:27:18

# Late again

0:27:240:27:27

# When I get home You'll be waiting. #

0:27:300:27:36

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:27:400:27:42

Thank you.

0:27:420:27:43

Emma Pollock!

0:27:450:27:46

I met Gerry a few times, but I wouldn't say that I knew him.

0:27:490:27:54

But through the music, I think I knew him quite, quite well.

0:27:540:28:00

Do you think that there will be a new generation of people

0:28:000:28:03

that will come and listen to Gerry's work,

0:28:030:28:06

-now that things like this have happened?

-Well, I hope so.

0:28:060:28:09

You can never tell with things like that, with songs and music,

0:28:090:28:12

what carries on, but I'm sure this, this stuff is classic,

0:28:120:28:16

classic music, that will last.

0:28:160:28:19

# In a dance hall by the river

0:29:530:29:57

# I was singing with a rambling band

0:29:570:30:00

# Just another small town night

0:30:000:30:03

# With a silver moon shining

0:30:030:30:06

# I remember when I saw you

0:30:080:30:12

# That first moment when it all began

0:30:120:30:15

# You looked across a crowded room

0:30:150:30:19

# You stole my heart away

0:30:190:30:22

# And we stood outside In the moonlight

0:30:230:30:27

# In the shadow of a factory wall

0:30:270:30:31

# Music playing soft and low

0:30:310:30:34

# And a gentle breeze sighing

0:30:340:30:37

# And the light on the river was magic

0:30:390:30:42

# Yes a magic that I still recall

0:30:420:30:46

# Moments come and moments go

0:30:460:30:49

# But these moments still remain

0:30:490:30:52

# Remember how we met

0:30:540:30:59

# Down by the waterside

0:31:020:31:07

# How easily we forget

0:31:090:31:15

# All the love that we knew

0:31:150:31:22

# So we married our fortunes together

0:31:540:31:57

# Sealed it with a golden band

0:31:580:32:01

# Somewhere down along the road

0:32:010:32:04

# We could see the flame dying

0:32:040:32:07

# But an exiled heart grows weary

0:32:090:32:13

# Like two strangers in a foreign land

0:32:130:32:16

# Reached the point of no return

0:32:160:32:20

# A long, long time ago

0:32:200:32:22

# Remember how we met

0:32:250:32:29

# Down by the waterside

0:32:320:32:37

# How easily we forget

0:32:400:32:45

# All the love that we knew

0:32:450:32:52

# Oh, oh, oh, ooh

0:32:520:32:57

# Oh oh ooh oh oh ooh

0:33:000:33:04

# Oh, oh, oh, ooh

0:33:080:33:11

# Oh ooh ooh oh oh oh

0:33:110:33:15

# Hey, hey, yeah, yeah

0:33:250:33:29

# Yeah

0:33:320:33:36

# Ooh, oh, oh. #

0:33:400:33:44

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE Thank you!

0:34:360:34:37

Well, you know, I mean, it's very hard to, sort of,

0:34:400:34:44

get into his songs and take them apart, you know?

0:34:440:34:47

Being a songwriter myself, I hate, in a way, to deconstruct songs,

0:34:470:34:51

because it kind of takes the mystery out of them.

0:34:510:34:53

But that song in particular,

0:34:530:34:54

One Drink Down And Another To Go, there's awful lot going in there.

0:34:540:34:57

Sometimes, one of the things that fascinates me about Gerry's writing

0:34:570:35:00

is, I think he, sometimes in the middle of a song

0:35:000:35:03

he will change character

0:35:030:35:05

and, like, he will have two people singing the same lyric

0:35:050:35:09

or, you know, two different people come into the song.

0:35:090:35:12

In this song, I'm not sure whether it's,

0:35:120:35:14

he's actually expressing himself

0:35:140:35:16

or whether he's putting words in his father's mouth.

0:35:160:35:19

# To Rafferty's Bar in my old jaunting car

0:35:460:35:52

# I took myself one Friday evening

0:35:520:35:56

# To think on a son so deceiving

0:35:570:36:00

# It's one drink down and another to go

0:36:010:36:05

# He was married in haste to a woman unchaste

0:36:060:36:11

# Much to the shame of the father

0:36:120:36:16

# His face still half-covered in lather

0:36:170:36:21

# It's one drink down and another to go

0:36:210:36:26

# It's one drink down and another to go

0:36:270:36:32

# When I pass through the town I must hang my head low

0:36:320:36:37

# It's one drink down

0:36:370:36:40

# And another to go

0:36:400:36:48

# Now I'm not the kind to condemn out of hand

0:37:010:37:06

# A woman whose virtue is easy

0:37:060:37:10

# Just as long as she doesn't deceive me

0:37:100:37:15

# It's one drink down And another to go

0:37:150:37:21

# Imagine a life with an unfaithful wife

0:37:210:37:26

# You might wake up in the morning

0:37:260:37:31

# And find that she's left without warning

0:37:310:37:35

# It's one drink down and another to go

0:37:350:37:41

# It's one drink down and another to go

0:37:410:37:46

# When I pass through the town I must hang my head low

0:37:460:37:51

# It's one drink down

0:37:510:37:54

# And another to go

0:37:540:38:02

# And it's one drink down and another to go

0:38:330:38:38

# When I pass through the town I must hang my head low

0:38:380:38:43

# It's one drink down and another

0:38:430:38:49

# To go. #

0:38:490:38:55

APPLAUSE

0:39:070:39:09

Thank you. Thank you, Martha!

0:39:090:39:11

Thanks, see later!

0:39:150:39:18

Anybody who knew Gerry

0:39:210:39:22

and knew his work would know that harmony was very important to him.

0:39:220:39:27

It was very important in the music that he made,

0:39:270:39:30

but it was also a very important thing spiritually and inwardly.

0:39:300:39:35

And he grew up with two brothers.

0:39:350:39:38

Gerry's brothers were called Jim, was the next one,

0:39:380:39:41

and then Joey was the eldest one.

0:39:410:39:44

And Joey and his wife Moira had five children

0:39:440:39:47

and they are all here tonight to sing for you in harmony with Martha.

0:39:470:39:53

Please welcome...

0:39:530:39:55

APPLAUSE

0:39:550:39:57

# When we were young we used to sing

0:40:180:40:24

# And we could feel the harmony

0:40:260:40:30

# You sit there waiting

0:40:320:40:35

# In the wings

0:40:350:40:38

# How long have you been waiting

0:40:380:40:42

# To let your light shine?

0:40:420:40:46

# Many years have gone since then

0:40:460:40:51

# Seen us go our different ways

0:40:530:40:57

# But now we sit here once again

0:40:590:41:05

# Tonight, we're going to sing out

0:41:050:41:09

# Tonight, our light will shine

0:41:090:41:14

# This is the time and place

0:41:140:41:19

# To bring out our memories

0:41:210:41:26

# It's written on every face

0:41:280:41:31

# I can see it in you You can see it in me

0:41:310:41:38

# In all the years we had

0:41:410:41:45

# As part of a family tree

0:41:470:41:52

# We knew the good and bad

0:41:540:41:57

# I can see it in you You can see it in me

0:41:570:42:04

# I know it's left its mark on you

0:42:090:42:14

# I see the same things in myself

0:42:160:42:21

# You know there's nothin' we can't do

0:42:230:42:28

# We've been a long time waitin' But some things never die

0:42:280:42:36

# It's time to leave all that behind

0:42:360:42:41

# It's time to lay that ghost to rest

0:42:430:42:47

# We can't deny the ties that bind

0:42:490:42:54

# Tonight, we're going to sing out

0:42:550:42:59

# Tonight, our light will shine

0:42:590:43:04

# This is the time and place

0:43:040:43:08

# To bring out our memories

0:43:110:43:15

# It's written on every face

0:43:170:43:21

# I can see it in you You can see it in me

0:43:210:43:27

# In all the years we had When we were young we used to sing

0:43:300:43:37

# As part of a family tree We could feel the harmony

0:43:370:43:44

# We knew the good and bad

0:43:440:43:47

# I can see it in you You can see it in me

0:43:470:43:54

# When we were young we used to sing. #

0:44:000:44:07

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:44:110:44:14

First time I met Gerry Rafferty was in Billy Connelly's dad's house,

0:44:270:44:31

in White Street in Partick, in February of 1969,

0:44:310:44:36

on the day of the evening of The Humblebums' first major concert, in the City Halls.

0:44:360:44:43

And Billy had invited a few people to come and be part of this concert

0:44:430:44:47

and I'm lucky enough to say I was one of them.

0:44:470:44:51

And we convened at Billy's dad's house in the afternoon

0:44:510:44:54

to go over the songs that we were going to sing in that evening

0:44:540:44:58

and amongst them was the song that you're about to hear.

0:44:580:45:02

A very poignant version, I think, at the piano, from Mr Roddy Hart.

0:45:020:45:09

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:45:090:45:10

# The coat she wore still lies upon the bed

0:45:420:45:47

# The book I gave her that she never read

0:45:490:45:54

# She left without a single word to say

0:45:560:46:02

# Her father didn't like me, anyway

0:46:030:46:08

# She always wanted more than I could give

0:46:110:46:16

# She wasn't happy with the way we lived

0:46:180:46:23

# I didn't feel like asking her to stay

0:46:250:46:30

# Her father didn't like me anyway

0:46:330:46:38

# Daddy never knew what she'd seen in me

0:46:410:46:46

# Said that I was going nowhere

0:46:480:46:52

# Maybe if we had talked he'd have seen something in me

0:46:550:47:01

# But Daddy didn't really care

0:47:030:47:07

# To tell the truth I didn't have the nerve

0:47:090:47:14

# I know I only got what I deserved

0:47:160:47:22

# So now she's taken leave of me today

0:47:240:47:29

# Her father didn't like me anyway

0:47:310:47:36

# Daddy never knew what she'd seen in me

0:48:080:48:14

# He said that I was going nowhere

0:48:150:48:20

# Maybe if we had talked he'd have seen something in me

0:48:230:48:28

# But Daddy didn't really care

0:48:300:48:35

# The coat she wore still lies upon the bed

0:48:370:48:42

# The book I gave her that she never read

0:48:440:48:49

# She left without a single word to say

0:48:520:48:56

# Her father didn't like me anyway. #

0:48:580:49:04

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE Thank you very much.

0:49:090:49:12

I think everybody is aware of Gerry's music.

0:49:170:49:19

I was saying that earlier, the thing with his songs

0:49:190:49:21

is that everybody is aware,

0:49:210:49:23

but people don't realise that they're his songs

0:49:230:49:26

and I was in that camp

0:49:260:49:27

but, obviously, I'm aware of, you know, Baker Street and...

0:49:270:49:30

you know, just... You know, everybody knows certain songs.

0:49:300:49:33

But I, you know, even the fact that he was in Stealers Wheel,

0:49:330:49:37

kind of, I was aware of it, but you don't really think about it.

0:49:370:49:39

You just realise,

0:49:390:49:41

you look at the length and breadth of the work and it's staggering.

0:49:410:49:43

Like, the man has written some incredible songs

0:49:430:49:46

that are just indelible, that will just be for ever.

0:49:460:49:49

# Well, here I am

0:50:250:50:27

# Back in town

0:50:290:50:31

# This desert sand

0:50:320:50:36

# Is comin' down

0:50:360:50:38

# Warm wind blowin'

0:50:400:50:44

# Through the trees

0:50:440:50:47

# Watch them swing

0:50:470:50:49

# Watch them sway

0:50:490:50:51

# Lie here waiting for the day

0:50:510:50:55

# Yeah, yeah

0:50:570:50:59

# Sleep won't come

0:51:010:51:04

# I need a drink

0:51:050:51:08

# Stop my head

0:51:090:51:11

# Don't want to think

0:51:130:51:15

# Wishing I

0:51:160:51:18

# Was here with you

0:51:200:51:22

# But I know you're so far away

0:51:230:51:28

# And I'm here waiting for the day

0:51:280:51:33

# Yeah, yeah

0:51:350:51:37

# Water of life Bring your light down on me

0:51:390:51:45

# Take me out of this darkness Sweet star of the sea

0:51:450:51:52

# Water so sweet You can open my eyes

0:51:530:51:59

# You can bring down the rain On this desert so dry

0:52:000:52:08

# Out on the street

0:52:130:52:15

# It's time to go

0:52:170:52:19

# The silence speaks

0:52:200:52:23

# Hear it call

0:52:240:52:26

# City of

0:52:280:52:30

# The living dead

0:52:310:52:33

# Count the lights on the motorway

0:52:350:52:39

# Lie here waiting for the day

0:52:390:52:43

# Yeah, yeah

0:52:450:52:48

# Ooh, let's go

0:52:480:52:50

# Water of life Pour your light down on me

0:53:270:53:33

# Take me out of this darkness Sweet star of the sea

0:53:330:53:40

# Water so sweet

0:53:420:53:44

# You can open my eyes

0:53:440:53:49

# You can bring down the rain On this desert so dry

0:53:490:53:56

# Yes, here I am

0:54:010:54:03

# Back in town

0:54:050:54:07

# Just as the night

0:54:090:54:11

# Is comin' down

0:54:120:54:14

# Warm wind blowin'

0:54:160:54:18

# Through the trees

0:54:190:54:21

# I watch them swing

0:54:230:54:25

# I watch them sway

0:54:250:54:27

# I lie here waiting for the day

0:54:270:54:32

# Yeah, yeah

0:54:340:54:35

# All right

0:54:370:54:39

# All right

0:54:410:54:42

# Yeah

0:54:440:54:45

# Yeah, yeah, yeah

0:54:450:54:47

# Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah

0:54:490:54:53

# Ooh, yeah. #

0:55:020:55:04

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:55:160:55:18

Thank you!

0:55:180:55:19

This is one of those songs that is, kind of, you know,

0:55:220:55:26

it made me want to become, you know, do this in living.

0:55:260:55:28

So it's cool that I get to do that one tonight.

0:55:280:55:31

# You still got that light in your eyes

0:55:450:55:51

# Our day is comin' by and by

0:55:530:55:58

# Travelling this long road here with you

0:56:000:56:07

# We still gotta long way Still gotta long way to go

0:56:070:56:12

# The first time I set eyes on you

0:56:410:56:45

# I listened to you sing Yeah, yeah

0:56:450:56:48

# We didn't have to speak For the words said everything

0:56:480:56:54

# When you walked into my life

0:56:560:56:58

# We were on our way, yeah

0:57:000:57:03

# So long ago But it seems like yesterday

0:57:040:57:09

# I just want to tell ya

0:57:090:57:11

# You still got that light in your eyes

0:57:110:57:15

# Yes, you do

0:57:150:57:16

# Our day is comin' by and by

0:57:170:57:23

# Travel this long road here with you

0:57:260:57:32

# Still gotta long way Still gotta long way to go

0:57:320:57:37

# Now some of my best memories

0:57:410:57:45

# Are days I spent with you Yeah, yeah

0:57:450:57:47

# Each time we hit the road it was always something new

0:57:480:57:53

# Spaced out rather drunk Singing in the sun, yeah, yeah

0:57:560:58:02

# Another bottle down And the new day just begun

0:58:030:58:08

# I just want to tell ya

0:58:080:58:11

# You still got that light in your eyes

0:58:110:58:16

# Yes, you do

0:58:160:58:18

# And our day is comin' by and by

0:58:180:58:23

# Travel this long road here with you

0:58:250:58:32

# We still gotta long way We still gotta long way to go

0:58:320:58:37

# Shine a light Shine it bright on the days gone down

0:58:370:58:41

# Shine a light Shine it bright on the days gone down

0:58:440:58:49

# Shine a light Shine it bright on the days gone down

0:58:510:58:56

# We won't forget the days gone down

0:59:070:59:11

# They're written in our hearts Yeah, yeah

0:59:110:59:13

# As much in tune As we were right from the start

0:59:140:59:19

# All seems so much harder now

0:59:210:59:26

# Seemed so easy then Yeah, yeah

0:59:260:59:28

# Maybe someday just for fun We might do it all again

0:59:280:59:34

# I just want to tell ya

0:59:340:59:37

# You still got that light in your eyes

0:59:370:59:41

# Yes, you do

0:59:410:59:43

# Our day is comin' by and by

0:59:450:59:49

# Travel this long road here with you

0:59:510:59:58

# Still gotta long way Still gotta long way to go

0:59:581:00:03

# Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah

1:00:071:00:13

# Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah

1:00:141:00:20

# Still got that light in your eyes now

1:00:221:00:27

# Our day is coming by and by

1:00:291:00:35

# Travelling Travelling this road with you

1:00:371:00:43

# Oh, no

1:00:431:00:44

# Still got that light in your eyes

1:00:471:00:52

# Our day is coming by and by

1:00:551:01:00

# Travel this long road here with you

1:01:021:01:08

# We still got a long way Still got a long way to go. #

1:01:081:01:16

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

1:01:191:01:22

Thank you very much.

1:01:221:01:23

What you think are the special things

1:01:251:01:27

that make a Gerry Rafferty song? Is melody?

1:01:271:01:29

It's melody, and harmony, and chord sequence for me.

1:01:291:01:33

He's one of the most...

1:01:331:01:35

Unusual melody writers against an unpredictable chord progression

1:01:371:01:42

and that's what music, for me, is really all about.

1:01:421:01:45

That's the thing that drives me, as a writer.

1:01:451:01:47

# To each and every one of you

1:01:501:01:54

# I say goodbye, farewell, adieu

1:01:541:01:58

# To each and all I say goodbye

1:01:581:02:02

# I know it's been fun but we're living a lie

1:02:021:02:08

# You said you spoke straight from the heart

1:02:101:02:15

# But that was the one thing that kept us apart

1:02:151:02:19

# Cos when I read between the lines

1:02:191:02:24

# I saw that the only heart speaking was mine

1:02:241:02:29

# To each and every one of you

1:02:321:02:36

# I say goodbye

1:02:361:02:38

# Indeed, I do

1:02:381:02:40

# If you should ask me why I go

1:02:401:02:43

# I wouldn't say, cos you should know

1:02:431:02:48

# When everything is said and done

1:02:511:02:55

# Nothing is lost and nothing is won

1:02:551:02:59

# I took from you You took from me

1:02:591:03:03

# But I suppose that's how it had to be

1:03:031:03:09

# To each and every one of you

1:03:321:03:35

# I say goodbye

1:03:351:03:38

# Indeed, I do

1:03:381:03:41

# If you should ask me why I go

1:03:411:03:44

# I wouldn't say, cos you should know

1:03:441:03:50

# To each and every one of you

1:03:501:03:55

# I say goodbye, farewell, adieu

1:03:551:04:00

# To each and all I say goodbye

1:04:001:04:03

# I know it's been fun but we're living

1:04:031:04:08

# A lie. #

1:04:081:04:15

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

1:04:151:04:18

I'm singing a song called My Singing Bird and it was actually

1:04:211:04:25

Martha, his daughter, who contacted me originally about the show.

1:04:251:04:30

In was going through the songs and my initial thing was

1:04:301:04:32

I wrote the four or five songs that I would love to sing

1:04:321:04:35

and then I thought, "I'm not really going to do them justice."

1:04:351:04:38

I'd rather do something that I could make my own in a certain way,

1:04:381:04:44

because I think the point of taking someone's song is

1:04:441:04:48

doing something that reflects what you bring, I guess.

1:04:481:04:51

It's not any old singer-songwriter that would get me to put on a suit!

1:04:521:04:57

LAUGHTER

1:04:571:04:58

WOLF WHISTLE

1:05:001:05:01

Too kind!

1:05:021:05:03

# Sing your song to me

1:05:321:05:35

# My singing bird

1:05:371:05:39

# Let your voice ring loud

1:05:421:05:46

# So you'll be heard

1:05:471:05:50

# While you're here tonight

1:05:541:05:56

# We'll be as one

1:05:591:06:01

# For tomorrow

1:06:031:06:05

# You will seek the sun

1:06:061:06:10

# Sing your song to me

1:06:161:06:19

# My singing bird

1:06:201:06:24

# Let your voice ring loud

1:06:271:06:30

# So you'll be heard

1:06:321:06:35

# Just for a moment

1:06:381:06:40

# I'm asking you to stay

1:06:421:06:45

# For tomorrow

1:06:471:06:49

# You'll be far away

1:06:511:06:54

# As tomorrow

1:06:581:07:00

# You'll be far away

1:07:011:07:04

# Ohh

1:07:111:07:13

# Ohh!

1:07:211:07:28

# Oh

1:07:301:07:32

# Hmm

1:07:331:07:34

# Hmm

1:07:351:07:37

# Sing your song to me

1:07:431:07:46

# My singing bird

1:07:481:07:50

# Let your voice ring loud

1:07:541:07:57

# So you'll be heard

1:07:581:08:01

# While you're here tonight

1:08:041:08:06

# We'll be as one

1:08:091:08:12

# Cos tomorrow

1:08:131:08:15

# You will seek the sun

1:08:171:08:20

# Yes, tomorrow

1:08:241:08:26

# You will seek the sun. #

1:08:281:08:31

APPLAUSE

1:08:431:08:44

Thank you very much.

1:08:441:08:47

I'd like to return to 1971 and the birth of Stealers Wheel

1:08:591:09:05

and to join me on this,

1:09:051:09:06

I'd like to welcome Gerry's nephew, Mark Rafferty.

1:09:061:09:09

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

1:09:091:09:11

# Mary Skeffington

1:09:441:09:48

# Close your eyes

1:09:481:09:50

# And make believe that you are just a girl again

1:09:521:09:57

# Go to sleep tonight

1:09:591:10:02

# Dream of days

1:10:021:10:04

# When you had something there to light the way

1:10:061:10:11

# Remember a holiday in a North of England town

1:10:141:10:19

# You slept in a room upstairs on a bed of eiderdown

1:10:221:10:28

# Mary Skeffington

1:10:301:10:33

# When you wake

1:10:331:10:36

# You mustn't be afraid to face another day

1:10:371:10:43

# Think of what you have You'll get by

1:10:441:10:50

# You've always been a lady So hold your head up high

1:10:511:10:56

# Look back on a home where you spent the best years of your life

1:10:591:11:05

# Remember a man who asked you if you would be his wife

1:11:081:11:13

# Mary Skeffington, close your eyes

1:11:161:11:22

# And make believe that you are just a girl again

1:11:231:11:28

# Go to sleep tonight

1:11:291:11:31

# Dream of days

1:11:321:11:36

# When you had something there to light the way. #

1:11:371:11:41

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

1:11:461:11:49

How well do you think Gerry Rafferty will continue to be appreciated?

1:11:531:11:57

I think he'll probably be more appreciated

1:11:571:12:01

with the distance of time.

1:12:011:12:02

I think if you've got songs that release a vibe

1:12:021:12:05

and the quality is running through it,

1:12:051:12:07

I think those ones tend to be better appreciated as the years go by.

1:12:071:12:11

I think his work will stand the test of time.

1:12:111:12:13

# Now the night train is waitin'

1:12:301:12:33

# To take me away

1:12:341:12:36

# And I'm still feelin' guilty Cos you wanted me to stay

1:12:381:12:45

# Well, I know how I know

1:12:451:12:47

# It's harder on you

1:12:481:12:50

# Then you said it yourself There's nothing else we could do

1:12:521:12:59

# When the wheels start turnin'

1:12:591:13:02

Takin' me through the night

1:13:031:13:05

# Out there in the darkness There's a star shinin' bright

1:13:061:13:13

# And it makes me feel better

1:13:141:13:17

# Just to see it up there

1:13:171:13:19

# Hope you're thinkin' about it Hope you know I still care

1:13:211:13:26

# So goodnight

1:13:271:13:28

# Yeah, goodnight

1:13:281:13:31

# Goodnight train is going to carry me home

1:13:311:13:35

# So goodnight

1:13:351:13:37

# Yeah, goodnight

1:13:371:13:38

# Goodnight train is going to carry me home

1:13:381:13:41

# Well, I know you've been waiting

1:13:451:13:49

# But I'll be seeing you soon

1:13:491:13:52

# Meanwhile I just lay here And stare at the moon

1:13:521:14:00

# And a light made of silver

1:14:001:14:03

# Through my window it creeps

1:14:031:14:05

# And the train keeps on rollin' And it just rocks me to sleep

1:14:071:14:11

# Ah goodnight Yeah, goodnight

1:14:131:14:16

# Goodnight train is going to carry me home

1:14:161:14:21

# So goodnight Yeah, goodnight

1:14:211:14:24

# Goodnight train is going to carry me home

1:14:241:14:29

# So goodnight Yeah, goodnight

1:15:021:15:05

# Goodnight train is going to carry me home

1:15:051:15:09

# So goodnight Yeah, goodnight

1:15:091:15:13

# Goodnight train is going to carry me home

1:15:131:15:17

# Well, from city to city

1:15:201:15:23

# It's 400 miles

1:15:231:15:25

# And I'm bound to wake up every once in a while

1:15:271:15:34

# And it's then that I call out to some higher power

1:15:341:15:41

# Then I go back to sleep Cos I'll be home in an hour

1:15:411:15:46

-# So goodnight

-Goodnight

-Yeah, goodnight

-Goodnight

1:15:471:15:51

# Goodnight train is going to carry me home

1:15:511:15:54

-# So goodnight

-Goodnight

-Yeah, goodnight

-Goodnight

1:15:541:15:59

# Goodnight train is going to carry me home

1:15:591:16:02

-# So goodnight

-Goodnight

-Yeah, goodnight

-Goodnight

1:16:021:16:06

# Goodnight train is going to carry me home

1:16:061:16:09

-# So goodnight

-Goodnight

-Yeah, goodnight

-Goodnight

1:16:091:16:13

# Goodnight train is going to carry me home

1:16:131:16:16

# I'm going home

1:16:181:16:19

# Ooh, goodnight

1:16:191:16:21

# I'm going home

1:16:211:16:23

# Ooh, goodnight

1:16:231:16:25

# I'm going home

1:16:251:16:26

# Ooh, goodnight

1:16:261:16:28

# I'm going home

1:16:281:16:30

# Ooh, goodnight

1:16:301:16:33

# I'm going home Ooh, yeah, ooh

1:16:331:16:36

# I'm going home

1:16:361:16:37

# Ooh, yeah, patootie

1:16:371:16:39

# I'm going home

1:16:391:16:41

# Ooh, yeah, patootie

1:16:411:16:43

# I'm going home

1:16:431:16:44

# Ooh. #

1:16:441:16:45

-Thank you very much!

-CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

1:16:491:16:53

Thank you!

1:16:531:16:54

Thank you!

1:16:571:16:58

Some of you might know this one(!)

1:17:131:17:15

# Windin' your way down on Baker Street

1:18:171:18:20

# Light in your head and dead on your feet

1:18:211:18:25

# Well, another crazy day

1:18:251:18:27

# You'll drink the night away

1:18:271:18:29

# And forget about everything

1:18:291:18:32

# This city desert makes you feel so cold.

1:18:341:18:38

# It's got so many people but it's got no soul

1:18:381:18:42

# And it's taking you so long

1:18:421:18:44

# To find out you were wrong

1:18:441:18:46

# When you thought it had everything

1:18:461:18:50

# You used to think that it was so easy

1:18:511:18:55

# You used to say that it was so easy

1:18:551:18:59

# But you're tryin'

1:18:591:19:01

# You're tryin' now

1:19:011:19:04

# Another year and then you'll be happy

1:19:081:19:11

# Just one more year and then you'll be happy

1:19:111:19:16

# But you're cryin'

1:19:161:19:18

# You're cryin' now

1:19:181:19:21

# Way down the street there's a lad in his place

1:19:591:20:03

# He opens the door He's got that look on his face

1:20:031:20:07

# And he asks you where you've been

1:20:071:20:09

# You tell him who you've seen And you talk about anything

1:20:091:20:14

# He's got this dream about buyin' some land

1:20:161:20:20

# He's going to give up the booze and the one-night stands

1:20:201:20:24

# And then he'll settle down Some quiet little town

1:20:241:20:28

# And forget about everything

1:20:281:20:32

# But you know he's gonna keep movin'

1:20:341:20:38

# You know he's never gonna stop movin

1:20:381:20:41

# Cos he's rollin'

1:20:411:20:44

# He's the rollin' stone

1:20:441:20:47

# And when you wake up it's a new mornin'

1:20:501:20:54

# The sun is shinin' it's a new morning

1:20:541:20:58

# You're goin'

1:20:581:21:01

# You're goin' home. #

1:21:011:21:05

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE Woo!

1:23:581:24:03

-Thank you!

-And Paul Brady.

1:24:101:24:12

OK, I'm going to welcome as many people back onto the stage

1:24:241:24:27

as want to come back, which will be everybody, for the final song.

1:24:271:24:32

Would everyone come back on?

1:24:321:24:33

Two at a time, three at a time, whatever! CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

1:24:331:24:38

# Well, I don't know why I came here tonight

1:25:101:25:13

# I got the feeling that something ain't right

1:25:131:25:16

# I'm so scared in case I fall off my chair

1:25:161:25:21

# And I'm wondering how I'll get down the stairs

1:25:211:25:25

# Clowns to the left of me Jokers to the right

1:25:251:25:29

-# Here I am

-Stuck in the middle with you

1:25:291:25:32

# Yes, I'm stuck in the middle with you

1:25:331:25:37

# And I'm wondering what it is I should do

1:25:371:25:41

# It's so hard to keep the smile from my face

1:25:411:25:44

# I'm losing control Yeah, I'm all over the place

1:25:441:25:49

# Clowns to the left of me Jokers to the right

1:25:491:25:53

-# Here I am

-Stuck in the middle with you

1:25:531:25:56

# Well, you started out with nothing

1:25:581:25:59

# And you're proud that you're a self-made man

1:25:591:26:02

# And your friends they all come crawlin'

1:26:061:26:08

# Slap you on the back and say, please

1:26:081:26:14

# Please

1:26:141:26:17

# Well, I'm trying to make some sense of it all

1:26:251:26:28

# But I can see it makes no sense at all

1:26:281:26:33

# Is it cool to go to sleep on the floor?

1:26:331:26:37

# I don't think that I can take any more

1:26:371:26:40

# Clowns to the left of me Jokers to the right

1:26:401:26:45

-# Here I am

-Stuck in the middle with you

1:26:451:26:48

# Well, you started out with nothing

1:27:121:27:14

# And you're proud that you're a self-made man

1:27:141:27:17

# And your friends they all come running

1:27:201:27:22

# Slap you on the back and say, please

1:27:221:27:28

# Please

1:27:281:27:32

# Well, I don't know why I came here tonight

1:27:391:27:43

# I got the feeling that something ain't right

1:27:431:27:47

# I'm so scared in case I fall off my chair

1:27:471:27:52

# And I'm wondering how I'll get down the stairs

1:27:521:27:55

# Clowns to the left of me Jokers to the right

1:27:551:27:59

# Here I am Stuck in the middle with you

1:27:591:28:03

# Yes, I'm stuck in the middle with you

1:28:031:28:07

# Yes, I'm Stuck in the middle with you

1:28:071:28:10

# Here I am Stuck in the middle with you. #
