Cathedral, at the heart including our Adult, | :00:28. | :00:36.
You join us on one of the most important nights | :00:36. | :00:39.
in the Christian calendar - the great feast of Christmas, | :00:39. | :00:44.
when God sent his Son, Jesus, to live among us as one of us. | :00:44. | :00:49.
We rejoice once more that God has reached down | :00:49. | :00:52.
and taken what is ours - our frailty, sinfulness, anxieties | :00:52. | :00:59.
and given us what is his - hope, forgiveness and love. | :00:59. | :01:09.

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. | :06:16. | :06:20.
ALL: Amen. | :06:20. | :06:22.
The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God | :06:22. | :06:25.
and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. | :06:25. | :06:29.
And with your spirit. | :06:29. | :06:32.
As we prepare to celebrate the birth of Christ, | :06:32. | :06:35.
we pause to bless this Christmas manger scene. | :06:35. | :06:39.
When we look upon these figures, | :06:39. | :06:42.
the Christmas Gospel comes alive, | :06:42. | :06:45.
and we rejoice in the mystery of the Son of God made man. | :06:45. | :06:55.
| :06:55. | :07:23. | ||
Let us pray. | :07:23. | :07:27.
God of every nation and people, | :07:27. | :07:30.
from the very beginning of creation, | :07:30. | :07:32.
you have made manifest your love. | :07:32. | :07:36.
When our need for a Saviour was great, | :07:36. | :07:38.
you sent your Son to be born of the Virgin Mary. | :07:38. | :07:42.
To our lives he brings joy and peace, justice, mercy, and love. | :07:43. | :07:49.
Lord, bless this manger. May it remind us of the humble birth | :07:49. | :07:56.
of Jesus, and raise up our thoughts to him, | :07:56. | :08:00.
who is God-with-us and Saviour of all, | :08:00. | :08:03.
and who lives and reigns for ever and ever. | :08:03. | :08:06.
Amen. | :08:06. | :08:16. | |

READING: ISAIAH 9: 1-7 | :19:02. | :19:04.
A reading from Isaiah. | :19:04. | :19:06.
The people that walked in darkness has seen a great light; | :19:06. | :19:08.
on those who live in a land of deep shadow a light has shone. | :19:08. | :19:12.
You have made their gladness greater, | :19:12. | :19:16.
you have made their joy increase; | :19:16. | :19:19.
they rejoice in your presence as men rejoice at harvest time, | :19:19. | :19:25.
as men are happy when they are dividing the spoils. | :19:25. | :19:30.
For the yoke that was weighing on him, | :19:30. | :19:33.
the bar across his shoulders, the rod of his oppressor, | :19:33. | :19:39.
these you break as on the day of Midian. | :19:40. | :19:45.
For all the footgear of battle, every cloak rolled in blood, | :19:45. | :19:50.
is burnt, and consumed by fire. | :19:50. | :19:55.
For there is a child born for us, a son given to us | :19:55. | :20:00.
and dominion is laid on His shoulders; | :20:00. | :20:05.
and this is the name they give him: Wonder-Counsellor, Mighty-God, | :20:05. | :20:13.
Eternal-Father, Prince-of-Peace. | :20:13. | :20:18.
Wide is his dominion in a peace that has no end, | :20:18. | :20:24.
for the throne of David and for his royal power, | :20:24. | :20:28.
which he establishes and makes secure | :20:28. | :20:31.
in justice and integrity. | :20:31. | :20:35.
From this time onwards and for ever, | :20:35. | :20:38.
the jealous love of the Lord of Hosts will do this. | :20:38. | :20:44.
The word of the Lord. | :20:44. | :20:45.

A reading from the letter of St Paul to Titus. | :23:09. | :23:18.
God's grace has been revealed, | :23:18. | :23:21.
and it has made salvation possible for the whole human race | :23:21. | :23:25.
and taught us that what we have to do | :23:25. | :23:29.
is to give up everything that does not lead to God, | :23:29. | :23:33.
and all our worldly ambitions; we must be self-restrained | :23:33. | :23:41.
and live good and religious lives here in this present world, | :23:41. | :23:47.
while we are waiting in hope for the blessing which will come | :23:47. | :23:52.
with the Appearing of the glory | :23:52. | :23:54.
of our great God and saviour Christ Jesus. | :23:54. | :24:00.
He sacrificed himself for us | :24:00. | :24:03.
in order to set us free from all wickedness | :24:03. | :24:08.
and to purify a people so that it could be his very own | :24:08. | :24:14.
and would have no ambition except to do good. | :24:14. | :24:23.
The word of the Lord. | :24:23. | :24:25.

The Lord be with you. | :26:14. | :26:16.
And with your spirit. | :26:16. | :26:21.
A reading from the hold Gospel according to Luke. | :26:21. | :26:24.
Glory to you, O Lord. | :26:24. | :26:34.
| :26:34. | :26:40. | ||
Caesar Augustus issued a decree | :26:40. | :26:42.
for a census of the whole world to be taken. | :26:42. | :26:46.
This census - the first - took place | :26:46. | :26:48.
while Quirinius was governor of Syria, | :26:48. | :26:52.
and everyone went to his own town to be registered. | :26:52. | :26:55.
So Joseph set out from the town of Nazareth in Galilee | :26:55. | :26:59.
and travelled up to Judaea, to the town of David called Bethlehem, | :26:59. | :27:04.
since he was of David's House and line, | :27:04. | :27:08.
in order to be registered together with Mary, | :27:08. | :27:11.
his betrothed, who was with child. | :27:11. | :27:15.
While they were there, the time came for her have her child, | :27:15. | :27:19.
and she birth to a son, her first born. | :27:19. | :27:23.
She wrapped him in swaddling clothes and laid him in a manger, | :27:23. | :27:28.
because there was no room for them at the inn. | :27:28. | :27:33.
In the countryside close by, | :27:33. | :27:35.
there were shepherds who lived in the fields | :27:35. | :27:37.
and took it in turns to watch their flocks during the night. | :27:37. | :27:43.
The angel of the Lord appeared to them, | :27:43. | :27:46.
and the glory of the Lord shone round them. | :27:46. | :27:50.
They were terrified, but the angel said, "Do not be afraid. | :27:50. | :27:55.
"Listen, I bring you news of great joy, | :27:56. | :28:00.
"a joy to be shared by the whole people. | :28:00. | :28:04.
"Today in the town of David, | :28:04. | :28:06.
"a saviour has been born to you. He is Christ the Lord. | :28:06. | :28:12.
"And here is a sign for you - | :28:12. | :28:14.
"you will find a baby wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in a manger." | :28:14. | :28:21.
And suddenly with the angel, | :28:21. | :28:23.
there was a great throng of the heavenly host, | :28:23. | :28:27.
praising God and singing, "Glory to God in the highest heaven, | :28:27. | :28:33.
"and peace to men who enjoy his favour." | :28:33. | :28:41.
The Gospel of the Lord. | :28:41. | :28:44.
Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. | :28:44. | :28:49.
ORGAN FANFARE | :28:49. | :28:59.
| :28:59. | :29:26. | ||
Most Christian Churches around the world | :29:26. | :29:30.
will put up a crib for the Christmas season. | :29:30. | :29:31.
We're all familiar with theatbeautiful tableau of Joseph and Mary, | :29:32. | :29:36.
shepherds and wise men, ox and ass gathered to adore | :29:36. | :29:40.
the newly born infant in the manger. | :29:41. | :29:45.
The scene is usually topped | :29:45. | :29:46.
with a star, and beautiful, crisp, golden straw | :29:46. | :29:52.
completes the stable setting. | :29:52. | :29:55.
It's the very image of tranquillity, serenity and peace. | :29:55. | :30:02.
When I was parish priest in nearby Mirfield, | :30:02. | :30:06.
the straw was provided by a family who kept a pony. | :30:06. | :30:11.
One year, when I arrived after dark to collect the straw, | :30:11. | :30:15.
one of the teenage children was despatched to the stable | :30:15. | :30:19.
with a couple of bin bags and a shovel. | :30:20. | :30:24.
It wasn't until the straw was tipped out in church that I discovered | :30:24. | :30:31.
it must have been collected from under the pony itself | :30:31. | :30:35.
rather than from fresh stock. | :30:35. | :30:39.
It was dirty, soiled and stank, littered with pony droppings | :30:39. | :30:46.
and, of course, it had to be replaced. | :30:46. | :30:48.
However, I suspect it more authentically depicted | :30:48. | :30:53.
the stable in Bethlehem than any of the pious figurines. | :30:53. | :30:58.
We have sanitised the Christmas and romanticised it. | :30:58. | :31:04.
But there is nothing romantic and serene about it whatsoever. | :31:04. | :31:09.
The truth is that the Christmas story is set amidst poverty, | :31:09. | :31:15.
upheaval, political oppression and brutality. | :31:15. | :31:21.
The Roman economy was in a mess, and the Romans wanted more taxes. | :31:21. | :31:27.
And so, just as we heard in tonight's Gospel, everybody - | :31:27. | :31:31.
young and old and even the pregnant - | :31:31. | :31:35.
had to be rounded up to pay their dues. | :31:35. | :31:40.
Bethlehem was overcrowded | :31:40. | :31:42.
and the only place Mary and Joseph could find for a child to be born | :31:42. | :31:49.
was in the squalor of a stable. | :31:49. | :31:53.
Then, all at once, the baby's life was put in danger. | :31:53. | :31:58.
The wise men from the East had innocently told King Herod | :31:58. | :32:01.
that a great new King of the Jews had been born. | :32:01. | :32:05.
Herod was determined to eradicate this infant rival | :32:05. | :32:10.
and gave orders to massacre any male children under two years old. | :32:10. | :32:17.
The holy family had to flee to Egypt to seek asylum. | :32:17. | :32:25.
Nothing romantic, tranquil, serene or peaceful about it. | :32:25. | :32:32.
But it is in this story of political oppression | :32:32. | :32:37.
and hardship that the Word of God became flesh and dwelt amongst us. | :32:37. | :32:44.
God comes to his chosen people | :32:44. | :32:47.
in the very midst of their suffering, oppression and pain. | :32:47. | :32:57.
| :32:57. | :33:16. | ||
As | :33:16. | :33:17. | |
As Isaiah | :33:17. | :33:17.
As Isaiah said | :33:17. | :33:23.
As Isaiah said in our first reading, people that walked in darkness have | :33:23. | :33:33.
| :33:33. | :33:36. | ||
For most of us, take on greater significance | :33:36. | :33:38.
We are more acutely aware of the circumstances of our lives. | :33:38. | :33:40.
First of all, | :33:40. | :33:42.
the circumstances of our family arrangements come into sharp focus. | :33:42. | :33:46.
Some will cherish the hours or daysof family togetherness at Christmas, | :33:46. | :33:52.
while others may may find that experience | :33:52. | :34:02.
tiresome and tedious in the extreme. | :34:02. | :34:03.
And, of course, there will also be many people | :34:03. | :34:06.
who feel particularly alone and unloved at Christmas. | :34:06. | :34:10.
In many homes, families struggling in the present economic environment | :34:10. | :34:15.
may be worried silly | :34:15. | :34:17.
where the money to pay for Christmas is to be found. | :34:17. | :34:25.
Elsewhere, some may be grieving the recent loss of a loved one, | :34:25. | :34:30.
perhaps killed tragically, ormurdered, or died by their own hand. | :34:30. | :34:35.
Families in Newtown, Connecticut, and victims of similar atrocities, | :34:35. | :34:40.
will feel acute pain and loss at this time. | :34:40. | :34:46.
There will be those in temporary accommodation | :34:46. | :34:49.
as a result of flood damage, | :34:49. | :34:52.
those who are homeless, or strangersseeking acceptance in a foreign land. | :34:52. | :35:01.
Whatever the circumstances of our lives as we keep this Christmas, | :35:01. | :35:07.
the first lesson we should draw from the story of the Nativity | :35:07. | :35:12.
is that a saviour has been born for us, | :35:12. | :35:17.
God truly is with us. | :35:17. | :35:21.
Jesus was made flesh | :35:22. | :35:24.
and dwelt amidst the oppression and brutality of his own day, | :35:24. | :35:28.
and in the poverty and vulnerabilityin which so many of the people lived. | :35:29. | :35:35.
And Jesus' followers must make him present for the poor, | :35:35. | :35:40.
the marginalised, and the oppressed of our own modern world. | :35:40. | :35:46.
The second lesson we should draw from the story of the Nativity | :35:46. | :35:52.
is that Christians should be the light | :35:52. | :35:55.
in the darkness of peoples' lives, | :35:55. | :35:59.
the companions of the lonely and isolated, | :35:59. | :36:04.
the promoters of peace and reconciliation. | :36:04. | :36:10.
They must be there for the needy, | :36:10. | :36:12.
generous with their time, talents and resources. | :36:12. | :36:19.
Christians must be ready to support the dignity of life at every stage, | :36:19. | :36:24.
to value the uniqueness of every individual, | :36:24. | :36:30.
to challenge the self-centredness, greed and materialism | :36:30. | :36:36.
which often divide our world. | :36:36. | :36:41.
"Today a Saviour has been born to us" | :36:41. | :36:45.
proclaims the angel of the Gospel to our modern times. | :36:45. | :36:51.
Christians must convince an often sceptical and unbelieving world | :36:51. | :36:57.
that this is so by the example of their lives | :36:57. | :37:01.
and the quality of their love. | :37:01. | :37:05.
We have indeed sanitised and romanticised our cribs, | :37:05. | :37:10.
but we must ensure that we do not sanitise or romanticise | :37:10. | :37:16.
what it means to be a Christian | :37:16. | :37:19.
or how we are to live the Christian life. | :37:19. | :37:29.
| :37:29. | :37:36. | ||

Apology for the loss of subtitles for 81 seconds | :37:46. | :41:56.
Brothers and Sisters, this is the night | :41:56. | :41:58.
when the goodness and kindness of God our Saviour appeared. | :41:58. | :42:03.
Let us lift up our prayers to the Father of Our Lord Jesus Christ, | :42:03. | :42:08.
for the Church and the whole world. | :42:08. | :42:13.
For the Holy Church of God, may she be attentive | :42:13. | :42:16.
to the needs of all, sharing their grief and pain, | :42:16. | :42:21.
their joy and hope, and so faithfully bring all people | :42:21. | :42:26.
the Good News that the Saviour has been given to us. | :42:26. | :42:31.
Let us pray to the Lord. | :42:31. | :42:36.
# Lord hear our prayer. # | :42:36. | :42:46.
| :42:46. | :42:47. | ||
For peace in the world, | :42:47. | :42:49.
may the celebration of the birth of the King of Peace | :42:49. | :42:52.
give courage to those in government and positions of leadership | :42:53. | :43:00.
to work tirelessly for just peace between all peoples of the world. | :43:00. | :43:08.
# Let us pray to the Lord. | :43:08. | :43:12.
# Lord hear our prayer. # | :43:12. | :43:22.
| :43:22. | :43:23. | ||
For the needs of human life, | :43:23. | :43:26.
may believers, and all people of good will, be inspired and strengthened | :43:26. | :43:31.
by the celebration of Jesus' birth to respect the dignity of all human life | :43:31. | :43:37.
from the moment of conception to natural death. | :43:37. | :43:41.
# Let us pray to the Lord. | :43:41. | :43:45.
# Lord hear our prayer. # | :43:45. | :43:54.
For those who are sick and suffering, by placing | :43:54. | :43:56.
their trust in the Lord, | :43:57. | :43:59.
may they find in the Saviour strength and hope, | :43:59. | :44:04.
and for those who have died recently and whose anniversaries occur at this time, | :44:04. | :44:11.
may they be forgiven their sins and come to rejoice together | :44:11. | :44:16.
in the fullness of joy in the company of the redeemed. | :44:16. | :44:20.
Let us ask Our Lady, the Mother of the Saviour of the World, | :44:20. | :44:30.
| :44:30. | :44:31. | ||
# Let us pray to the Lord. | :44:31. | :44:32.
# Lord hear our prayer. # | :44:32. | :44:36.
Let us ask Our Lady, the Mother of the Saviour of the World, | :44:36. | :44:38.
to pray with us now as we say... | :44:38. | :44:40.
Hail Mary, full of grace, | :44:40. | :44:50.
| :44:50. | :45:00. | ||
Receive, we ask, O Lord, the prayers of your Church, | :45:00. | :45:06.
who today contemplates and adores Christ your Son, | :45:06. | :45:09.
born of the Virgin Mary and made man for our salvation. | :45:09. | :45:11.
Who lives and reigns for ever and ever. | :45:11. | :45:14.
Amen. | :45:14. | :45:24. | |

# "Glory to God and peace to men | :46:54. | :46:58.
# "Now and for evermore | :46:58. | :47:04.

# It came upon the midnight clear | :47:40. | :47:44.
# That glorious song of old | :47:44. | :47:49.
# From angels bending near the earth | :47:49. | :47:55.
# To touch their harps of gold | :47:55. | :48:00.
# "Peace on the earth | :48:00. | :48:02.
# Good will to men | :48:02. | :48:05.
# "From heaven's all-gracious King!" | :48:05. | :48:10.
# The world in solemn stillness lay | :48:10. | :48:16.
# To hear the angels sing | :48:16. | :48:23.
# Still through the cloven skies they come | :48:23. | :48:28.
# With peaceful wings unfurled | :48:28. | :48:34.
# And still their heavenly music floats | :48:34. | :48:39.
# O'er all the weary world | :48:39. | :48:45.
# Above its sad and lowly plains | :48:45. | :48:50.
# They bend on hovering wing | :48:50. | :48:55.
# And ever o'er its Babel sounds | :48:56. | :49:01.
# The blessed angels sing | :49:01. | :49:08.
# For lo! | :49:08. | :49:10.
# The days are hastening on | :49:10. | :49:14.
# By prophet bards foretold | :49:14. | :49:19.
# When, with the ever-circling years | :49:19. | :49:25.
# Comes round the age of gold | :49:25. | :49:30.
# When peace shall over all the Earth | :49:30. | :49:35.
# Its ancient splendours fling | :49:35. | :49:42.
# And all the world give back the song | :49:42. | :49:47.
# Which now the angels sing. # | :49:47. | :49:57.
| :49:57. | :50:02. | ||
Pray, brothers and sisters, | :50:02. | :50:04.
that my sacrifice and yours | :50:04. | :50:05.
may be acceptable to God, the almighty Father. | :50:05. | :50:15.
| :50:15. | :50:20. | ||
May the oblation of this day's feast be pleasing to you, O Lord, | :50:21. | :50:24.
we pray, that through this most holy exchange, | :50:24. | :50:28.
we may be found in the likeness of Christ, | :50:28. | :50:31.
in whom our nature is united to you. | :50:31. | :50:35.
Who lives and reigns for ever and ever. | :50:35. | :50:38.
Amen. | :50:38. | :50:45. | |
# The Lord be with you | :50:45. | :50:52.
# And your spirit | :50:52. | :50:54.
# Lift up your hearts | :50:54. | :51:00.
# Let us give thanks to the Lord our God | :51:00. | :51:10.
| :51:10. | :51:10. | ||
It is truly right and just, our duty and our salvation, | :51:10. | :51:13.
always and everywhere to give you thanks, Lord, | :51:13. | :51:17.
holy Father, almighty and eternal God. | :51:17. | :51:23.
For in the mystery of the Word made flesh, | :51:24. | :51:29.
a new light of your glory has shone upon the eyes of our mind, | :51:29. | :51:35.
so that, as we recognise in him God made visible, | :51:35. | :51:42.
we may be caught up through him in love of things invisible. | :51:42. | :51:49.
And so, with Angels and Archangels, | :51:50. | :51:54.
with Thrones and Dominions, | :51:54. | :51:57.
and with all the hosts and Powers of heaven, | :51:57. | :52:03.
we sing the hymn of your glory, as without end we acclaim... | :52:03. | :52:13.

we make humble prayer and petition | :54:35. | :54:38.
through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord: | :54:38. | :54:41.
that you accept and bless these gifts, these offerings, | :54:41. | :54:45.
these holy and unblemished sacrifices, | :54:45. | :54:49.
which we offer you firstly for your holy Catholic Church. | :54:49. | :54:53.
Be pleased to grant her peace, to guard, unite and govern her | :54:53. | :54:57.
throughout the whole world, together with your servant Benedict our Pope, | :54:57. | :55:02.
and all those who, holding to the truth, | :55:02. | :55:05.
hand on the Catholic and Apostolic faith. | :55:05. | :55:10.
Remember, Lord, your servants and all gathered here, | :55:10. | :55:13.
whose faith and devotion are known to you. | :55:13. | :55:17.
For them, we offer you this sacrifice of praise, | :55:17. | :55:21.
or they offer it for themselves | :55:21. | :55:23.
and all who are dear to them: | :55:23. | :55:26.
for the redemption of their souls, in hope of health and well being, | :55:26. | :55:31.
and paying their homage to you, the eternal God, living and true. | :55:31. | :55:40.
Celebrating the most sacred night on which blessed Mary, | :55:40. | :55:44.
the immaculate Virgin, brought forth the Saviour for this world, | :55:44. | :55:50.
and in communion with those whose memory we venerate, | :55:50. | :55:54.
especially the glorious ever-Virgin Mary, Mother of our God | :55:54. | :56:00.
and Lord Jesus Christ, and blessed Joseph, her Spouse, | :56:00. | :56:05.
your blessed Apostles and Martyrs, Peter and Paul, Andrew, | :56:05. | :56:10.
and all your Saints; we ask that through their merits and prayers, | :56:10. | :56:16.
in all things we may be defended by your protecting help. | :56:16. | :56:24.
Be pleased, O God, we pray, to bless, acknowledge, | :56:24. | :56:34.

spiritual and acceptable, so that it may become for us the body and | :57:02. | :57:12.

"Take this, all of you, and eat of it | :57:22. | :57:26.

In a similar way, when supper was ended, | :57:47. | :57:50.
he took this precious chalice in his holy and venerable hands, | :57:50. | :57:55.
and once more giving you thanks, he said the blessing | :57:55. | :57:58.
and gave the chalice to his disciples, saying: | :57:58. | :58:01.
"Take this, all of you, and drink from it, | :58:01. | :58:05.
"for this is the chalice of my blood, | :58:05. | :58:08.
"the blood of the new and eternal covenant, | :58:08. | :58:12.
"which will be poured out for you | :58:12. | :58:14.

The mystery of faith. | :58:37. | :58:42.
Save us Saviour of the world, | :58:42. | :58:52.
| :58:52. | :58:57. | ||
Therefore, O Lord, as we celebrate the memorial of the blessed Passion, | :58:58. | :59:02.
the Resurrection from the dead, and the glorious Ascension into heaven | :59:02. | :59:06.
of Christ, your Son, our Lord, | :59:06. | :59:08.
we, your servants and your holy people, | :59:08. | :59:10.
offer to your glorious majesty | :59:10. | :59:13.
from the gifts that you have given us, this pure victim, | :59:13. | :59:17.
this holy victim, this spotless victim, | :59:17. | :59:21.
the holy Bread of eternal life and the Chalice of everlasting salvation. | :59:21. | :59:27.
Be pleased to look upon these offerings with | :59:27. | :59:31.
a serene and kindly countenance, and to accept them, | :59:31. | :59:34.
as once you were pleased to accept | :59:34. | :59:36.
the gifts of your servant Abel the just, | :59:36. | :59:40.
the sacrifice of Abraham, our father in faith, | :59:40. | :59:45.
and the offering of your high priest Melchizedek, | :59:45. | :59:47.
a holy sacrifice, a spotless victim. | :59:47. | :59:53.
In humble prayer we ask you, almighty God: | :59:53. | :59:54.
command that these gifts be borne by the hands of your holy Angel | :59:54. | :59:59.
to your altar on high in the sight of your divine majesty, | :59:59. | :00:03.
so that all of us, who through this participation at the altar | :00:03. | :00:08.
receive the most holy Body and Blood of your Son, | :00:08. | :00:11.
may be filled with every grace and heavenly blessing. | :00:11. | :00:21.
| :00:21. | :00:24. | ||
Remember | :00:24. | :00:24.
Remember also, | :00:24. | :00:24.
Remember also, Lord, | :00:24. | :00:27.
