First of all, let me tell you a little bit about Ghana.

This was the first country in Africa that became independent after

World War II.

In 1960, they broke away from the British Commonwealth

and became an independent republic.

The country took its name,

Ghana, from a very powerful African republic...

When they know I'm getting control And that's my black soul

So I'll keep on singing Expressing what I feel inside.

But one thing I will die with inside is my pride and my soul

I'm proud of what I am As black as I may be

And all I'm looking for in this one life

Is the freedom to be free.

Wow.

You can tell I went to sleep...

cos I really screwed that up. That'll be right.

I was thinking of, when we was coming on the plane,

the name of the show. Soul To Soul. That's something.

Soul coming to soul. It's a soul show and we're bringing soul,

right into soul.

Some people get offended by talking about going back home and all that,

but in a way I really feel it deep inside.

It's like...I couldn't even sleep for the whole week,

getting ready to come over here and all that.

That's every black person's dream, and I'm no exception.

I mean, you know, like, and me even more so because, you know,

I'm younger and my mind is more revolutionary, you know.

And I think...

I'm really excited about the whole thing,

because everybody dreams about going to the motherland at least once.

'I'm looking forward to all the pretty materials'

and the pretty prints, cos I sew, and I want to take whole batches

back with me, to make dashikis and different things like that there.

Ghana was one of the main points of shipping

of the slave trade to America.

This is a slave castle, one of many slave castles of Africa.

The flashbacks I've gotten just from being right in here,

really horrible things that almost left me, at one point,

where I felt life wasn't even worth living.

I can see where a great source of my hopelessness came from.

These were thick, brick walls, stone.

These are rooms where the slaves were brought when

they unloaded the slave ship until they sorted out who was to stay.

These shackles were still in the brick where

they would be shackled by their wrists and their foot.

There were so many they couldn't stand side-by-side

so they were standing single file.

And they would stand up all night and all day

and if you got really sick, there was a doorway there.

Just an open cut to where the slaves,

if they got really sick or if they were too old,

they walked through that door, right out into the ocean.

That was the most sorrowful and heavy laden.

You know, your heart whelms up in your throat

and tears whelm up in your eyes.

You're thinking about all these people and it was an eerie,

eerie feeling in there.

Sometimes late at night you can hear the moans and groans

coming from here, their spirits are still here, they are still here.
