If there's one venue in Northern Ireland that holds a special place

0:00:070:00:10

in the heart of music lovers,

0:00:100:00:12

it's got to be Belfast's Ulster Hall.

0:00:120:00:14

It's hosted countless legendary shows down the decades and tonight,

0:00:140:00:18

we celebrate its 150th anniversary.

0:00:180:00:20

To mark the occasion, we're going to throw a party -

0:00:200:00:23

something a little bit different,

0:00:230:00:25

as we celebrate not just the hall,

0:00:250:00:26

but the incredible back catalogue of songs written by Northern Irish artistes.

0:00:260:00:30

We selected 32 classics and asked for you to vote for your top ten.

0:00:300:00:34

Tonight, those songs will be performed by contemporary Northern Irish acts

0:00:340:00:38

in their own fashion...

0:00:380:00:40

accompanied by the Ulster Orchestra.

0:00:400:00:42

It's going to be special so, folks,

0:00:420:00:44

welcome to The Great Northern Songbook.

0:00:440:00:46

Ladies and gentlemen, a potted history of the Ulster Hall.

0:01:160:01:19

Doors opened in 1862, around 7.00pm.

0:01:190:01:23

Originally a ballroom, it quickly took on a life of its own.

0:01:230:01:26

Who'll forget Charles Dickens' farewell/comeback/greatest hits tour in 1869,

0:01:260:01:31

laying the path for great icons to visit over the next century or so?

0:01:310:01:34

But it hasn't always been easy.

0:01:340:01:36

It's played an important part in the political history of Northern Ireland, too...

0:01:360:01:40

from the signing of the Ulster Covenant in 1912,

0:01:400:01:43

to the formation of the Ulster Resistance.

0:01:430:01:46

It's continued to be the home of political rallies and debates.

0:01:460:01:49

And it's also opened its doors to sporting fans,

0:01:490:01:51

from the 1940s, when Belfast boxing hero "Rinty" Monaghan

0:01:510:01:55

stepped into the ring,

0:01:550:01:56

to early appearances by world champ, Barry McGuigan.

0:01:560:01:59

Giant Haystacks and Big Daddy got down and dirty under its roof,

0:01:590:02:02

and people were queueing up to see the likes of Alex Higgins

0:02:020:02:04

and Dennis Taylor.

0:02:040:02:06

And it's hosted beer festivals, tattoo conventions,

0:02:060:02:09

food fairs and everything in between.

0:02:090:02:12

But most of us hold the Ulster Hall in our hearts for one reason only,

0:02:120:02:15

and that's its amazing musical heritage.

0:02:150:02:17

There's no possible way to mention every single band who have graced this stage.

0:02:170:02:22

But there have been highlights.

0:02:220:02:23

The Rolling Stones turned many young ladies to blubbering wrecks in '65.

0:02:230:02:27

Led Zeppelin made musical history, with the world premiere

0:02:270:02:30

of Stairway To Heaven in 1971.

0:02:300:02:32

A Melody Maker review of the gig described the song as an "excellent ballad". If only they knew...

0:02:320:02:38

The Clash tried to play around this time, but the city fathers said no.

0:02:380:02:41

It was a second home for Rory Gallagher. The Boomtown Rats

0:02:410:02:45

and Motorhead both took to the stage in the late '70s.

0:02:450:02:48

'Toyah, The Ramones, The Undertones, Coldplay...'

0:02:480:02:51

The Chemical Brothers, Snow Patrol,

0:02:510:02:53

the Chilli Peppers...

0:02:530:02:55

I could go on and on.

0:02:550:02:56

And when it comes to big names, tonight is no exception.

0:02:560:02:59

Once again, all these acts doing their own take on tracks chosen

0:02:590:03:03

from The Great Northern Songbook by you guys.

0:03:030:03:06

So, to kick things off, the wonderful Cara Dillon,

0:03:060:03:09

performing, of all things, Teenage Kicks.

0:03:090:03:12

# Teenage kicks, so hard to beat

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:06:560:06:59

-Cara Dillon, welcome to the show.

-It's great to be here.

0:06:590:07:02

So many people rave about the Ulster Hall and for different reasons,

0:07:020:07:05

but, for you, what makes it special?

0:07:050:07:07

As a singer, for me, personally,

0:07:070:07:09

it is just the acoustics.

0:07:090:07:11

Sometimes I joke and call myself "the reverb queen",

0:07:110:07:14

because our soundman can't give me enough reverb, sometimes.

0:07:140:07:18

But in here, if you didn't have a monitor with reverb in it,

0:07:180:07:21

it wouldn't matter. It's so beautiful, your voice just carries.

0:07:210:07:24

I think it's probably one of those places that has seen

0:07:240:07:28

so much good music over so many years that the walls have absorbed

0:07:280:07:32

that sound and it's given it back to everyone who plays here.

0:07:320:07:36

When you first heard you'd be doing Teenage Kicks,

0:07:360:07:39

what was your reaction? Did that feel it would be a big challenge?

0:07:390:07:42

No...it was a lottery, really.

0:07:420:07:45

I was holding my breath, waiting to see what it was going to be.

0:07:450:07:48

It's so funny to get this song.

0:07:480:07:51

For me, it seemed kind of ridiculous.

0:07:510:07:53

It's such a challenge and I wanted to do it, cos it's an AMAZING song.

0:07:530:07:57

And it's a song which

0:07:570:07:58

I remember growing up and listening to in the car constantly

0:07:580:08:04

and because they're from Derry,

0:08:040:08:06

I was just delighted to get this song.

0:08:060:08:09

I didn't know what way I was going to do it.

0:08:090:08:11

I just love the arrangement, the way it's all been slowed down.

0:08:110:08:15

It shows that a good song can be interpreted...

0:08:150:08:19

and can survive the test of time. It's great.

0:08:190:08:22

Our next band are arguably the best live act in the country today.

0:08:220:08:26

Good enough to share stages with the likes of AC/DC, the Stones and Aerosmith.

0:08:260:08:30

from County Down, it's The Answer,

0:08:300:08:32

performing the song that topped our poll by a long shot...

0:08:320:08:35

and won its author an Ivor Novello Award for songwriting, back in 2001.

0:08:350:08:40

It's Shining Light, by Ash.

0:08:400:08:42

# Roman candle that burns in the night

0:08:440:08:48

# Yeah, you are a shining light

0:08:480:08:51

# You lit a torch

0:08:510:08:54

# In the infinite

0:08:540:08:56

# Yeah, you are a shining light

0:08:560:08:59

# You light up my life

0:09:010:09:04

# You've always been a thorn in the side

0:09:050:09:08

# But to me, you're a shining light

0:09:080:09:13

# You arrive and the night is alive

0:09:140:09:18

# Yeah, you are a shining light

0:09:180:09:21

# You light up my life

0:09:230:09:26

# We made our connection

0:10:030:10:07

# I see you are a shining light

0:10:560:11:00

# These are the days you often say

0:11:020:11:05

# There ain't nothing that we can do

0:11:050:11:09

# Beneath this canopy

0:11:100:11:13

# Of stars

0:11:130:11:15

# I'd shed blood for you

0:11:150:11:18

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:12:360:12:39

Thank you so much!

0:12:410:12:43

Our next performer barely needs an introduction.

0:12:440:12:47

Put simply, he's one of our most evocative voices - Brian Kennedy.

0:12:470:12:51

Brian has performed many times with the author of our next classic,

0:12:510:12:54

musical juggernaut, Van Morrison.

0:12:540:12:56

Taken from the record that Van will probably be best remembered for, Astral Weeks,

0:12:560:13:00

released when he was 23,

0:13:000:13:03

this tells the tale of the ever-mysterious Madame George.

0:13:030:13:06

# Down on Cyprus Avenue

0:13:100:13:12

# The childlike vision leaping into view

0:13:120:13:19

# The clicking-clacking of the high-heeled shoe

0:13:230:13:28

# Ford and Fitzroy and Madame George

0:13:280:13:33

# Marching with the soldier boy behind

0:13:370:13:40

# He's much older now with hat on, drinking wine

0:13:420:13:47

# And that smell of sweet perfume

0:13:490:13:53

# Comes drifting through

0:13:530:13:55

# The cool night air like Shalimar

0:13:560:14:00

# Outside, they're making all the stops

0:14:040:14:08

# The kids out on the street collecting bottle tops

0:14:100:14:15

# Going for cigarettes and matches in the shops

0:14:170:14:22

# Happy taken Madame George

0:14:240:14:27

# That's when you fall

0:14:310:14:35

# Whoa-oh-oh-oh, that's when you fall

0:14:370:14:40

# Yeah

0:14:430:14:45

# That's when you fall

0:14:450:14:49

# When you fall into a trance

0:14:530:14:56

# Sitting on a sofa Playing games of chance

0:14:580:15:03

# With your folded arms and history books you glance

0:15:060:15:10

# Into the eyes of Madame George

0:15:120:15:17

# And you think you've found the bag

0:15:200:15:23

# You're getting weaker

0:15:260:15:29

# Your knees begin to sag

0:15:290:15:31

# In the corner

0:15:330:15:34

# Playing dominoes in drag

0:15:340:15:37

# The only and only Madame George

0:15:390:15:44

# And then, from outside The frosty window raps

0:15:480:15:53

# She jumps up and says, "Lord have mercy, I think it's the cops!"

0:15:530:15:58

# And immediately drops everything she got

0:16:020:16:05

# Down into the street below

0:16:070:16:10

# And you know you got to go

0:16:150:16:18

# On the train from Dublin up to Sandy Row

0:16:210:16:25

# Throwing pennies at the bridges down below

0:16:270:16:31

# And the rain, hail, sleet and snow

0:16:350:16:38

# Say goodbye to Madame George

0:16:410:16:46

# Dry your eye for Madame George

0:16:490:16:53

# Wonder why for Madame George

0:16:560:17:00

# And as you leave, the room

0:17:050:17:08

# Is filled with music

0:17:080:17:10

# Laughing, music, laughing, music

0:17:100:17:13

# And all around the room

0:17:170:17:20

# And all the little boys come around

0:17:200:17:22

# Walking away from it all, so cold

0:17:220:17:27

# And as you're about to leave She jumps up and says...

0:17:310:17:34

# "Hey, love, you forgot your gloves"

0:17:380:17:40

# And the gloves to love The gloves to love

0:17:470:17:49

# The gloves to love, the gloves to love, the gloves to love,

0:17:490:17:52

# The gloves to love The gloves to love

0:17:520:17:54

# Say goodbye to Madame George

0:17:570:18:02

# In the backstreets, in the backstreets, in the backstreets. #

0:18:040:18:11

APPLAUSE AND CHEERING

0:18:110:18:14

Van Morrison, what a song!

0:18:170:18:20

I was very fortunate to get to know Van Morrison...

0:18:200:18:22

in the very early '90s

0:18:220:18:24

and of course, we were always aware of him as an artist.

0:18:240:18:27

But I started working with him in around the early '90s,

0:18:270:18:30

and I went on tour with him for six years, around the world,

0:18:300:18:33

and sang on five of his albums,

0:18:330:18:34

but we did, occasionally - very occasionally,

0:18:340:18:36

put in Madame George in the live set.

0:18:360:18:39

I'm privileged to say the first time I attempted to look at that song,

0:18:390:18:42

I did it with Van,

0:18:420:18:44

and I sometimes played guitar on it, but mostly I would sing it with him.

0:18:440:18:47

So it's one of those songs that's just...in terms of the fabric

0:18:470:18:50

of Belfast, it's such an integral part

0:18:500:18:54

of the soundtrack of this city,

0:18:540:18:55

so I'm proud to be part of it and to give it voice tonight.

0:18:550:18:58

Over the years, as a punter, what have been your stand-out moments

0:18:580:19:01

in the Ulster Hall?

0:19:010:19:02

It's one of those places that, first of all, I used to sing outside the City Hall

0:19:020:19:06

as a little busker.

0:19:060:19:08

It was one of those places you knew had this incredible,

0:19:080:19:10

legendary reputation.

0:19:100:19:12

You know, Rory Gallagher - all these people that came here, played here,

0:19:120:19:16

rocked the house.

0:19:160:19:17

It was always a, kind of, quite aspiration of mine

0:19:170:19:21

to come and sing in the Ulster Hall,

0:19:210:19:24

so to get to do it in this way,

0:19:240:19:26

and to celebrate all these Northern songs is an incredible privilege.

0:19:260:19:30

People rave about the Ulster Hall, for different reasons.

0:19:300:19:33

For you, what makes it so special?

0:19:330:19:35

I think it has to come down to its history, I think.

0:19:350:19:38

It's an iconic building.

0:19:380:19:39

In terms of the progression of our city,

0:19:390:19:43

from the darkest of times,

0:19:430:19:45

right through to these brighter times,

0:19:450:19:47

the Ulster Hall has just stood there, remaining a really,

0:19:470:19:50

I suppose, a kind of a building of hope where, at least,

0:19:500:19:52

you don't have to be Protestant or Catholic, or any of that kind of stuff.

0:19:520:19:56

When you come to the Ulster Hall, you're there to see music.

0:19:560:19:58

You put any kind of politic aside.

0:19:580:20:00

I think it's one of the only buildings

0:20:000:20:02

that offered that, in the quiet way that it did,

0:20:020:20:04

and it has great dignity as a building, too.

0:20:040:20:07

So I think that, for me as a performer,

0:20:070:20:09

it's one of those places, that when I look back on my career,

0:20:090:20:11

I think, "Yeah, I sang in the Ulster Hall."

0:20:110:20:14

Next up is General Fiasco, a band

0:20:140:20:17

with an army of fans, following their excellent debut, Buildings.

0:20:170:20:20

They're back with a new record,

0:20:200:20:22

but tonight they're performing a song by, in my opinion,

our finest singer-songwriter, Mr Neil Hannon.

0:20:250:20:27

From a classic Divine Comedy record called Promenade,

0:20:270:20:30

this is the beautiful, Tonight We Fly.

0:20:300:20:33

# Tonight we fly

0:20:350:20:39

# Over the houses

0:20:410:20:43

# The streets and the trees

0:20:430:20:47

# Over the dogs down below

0:20:470:20:51

# They'll bark at our shadows

0:20:510:20:54

# As we flow by on the breeze

0:20:540:20:59

# Tonight we fly

0:20:590:21:02

# Over the chimney tops

0:21:050:21:08

# Skylights and slates

0:21:080:21:11

# Looking into all your lives

0:21:110:21:15

# And wondering why

0:21:150:21:19

# Happiness is

0:21:190:21:22

# So hard to find

0:21:220:21:24

# Over the doctor

0:21:240:21:28

# Over the soldier

0:21:280:21:31

# Over the farmer

0:21:310:21:34

# Over the poacher

0:21:340:21:37

# Over the preacher

0:21:370:21:40

# Over the gambler

0:21:400:21:43

# Over the writer

0:21:430:21:46

# Over the writer

0:21:460:21:48

# Over the lawyer

0:21:480:21:52

-# Over the dancer

-Over the dancer

0:21:520:21:55

-# Over the voyeur

-Over the voyeur

0:21:550:21:58

# Over the builder

0:21:580:22:01

-# And the destroyer

-And the destroyer

0:22:010:22:05

# Over the hills and far away

0:22:050:22:13

# Tonight we fly

0:22:130:22:17

# Over the mountains

0:22:170:22:21

# The beach and the sea

0:22:210:22:23

# Over the friends that we've known

0:22:240:22:28

# And those that we now know

0:22:280:22:31

# And those whom we've yet to meet

0:22:310:22:36

# And when we die

0:22:360:22:40

# Oh, will we be that disappointed or sad?

0:22:400:22:47

# If heaven doesn't exist

0:22:480:22:52

# What will we have missed?

0:22:520:22:56

# This life is the best

0:22:560:22:59

# We've ever had. #

0:22:590:23:07

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:23:090:23:11

So, Owen and Enda from General Fiasco,

0:23:110:23:13

to sum up the Ulster Hall in a sentence, what would you say?

0:23:130:23:15

It's just one of the coolest venues in Belfast, so big and grand.

0:23:150:23:19

A massive, high ceiling. It's just a beautiful place.

0:23:190:23:21

Going to the Ulster Hall as punters, can you give us any stand-out gigs?

0:23:210:23:25

We went to see The Darkness, just before Christmas,

0:23:250:23:27

and it was one of the best gigs I've ever been to.

0:23:270:23:31

And we've seen Duke Special here.

0:23:310:23:34

I think it was the first time that I ever got into a Duke Special concert

0:23:340:23:37

was in the Ulster Hall.

0:23:370:23:39

I'd tried a couple of times and been turned away for being too young.

0:23:390:23:41

I finally got away with it and that was in the Ulster Hall.

0:23:410:23:44

-That's a very distressing statistic!

-THEY LAUGH

0:23:440:23:48

Tell us what it was like to perform with the Ulster Orchestra.

0:23:480:23:51

It was just surreal.

0:23:510:23:53

We're used to the four of us just standing...in a small space,

0:23:530:23:57

squeezed together and playing loud rock music,

0:23:570:24:00

and to have all those extra bodies,

0:24:000:24:02

all that extra sound behind you,

0:24:020:24:04

you can find it difficult just to drop into it

0:24:040:24:08

and make it feel natural, just cos it's so unnatural.

0:24:080:24:12

You may not have heard much about our next artist,

0:24:120:24:14

but we're big fans at BBC Radio Ulster

0:24:140:24:16

and she felt like an absolute must for this concert

0:24:160:24:18

with the Ulster Orchestra.

0:24:180:24:20

She's from Portadown, she's called Katharine Philippa,

0:24:200:24:22

and she's performing David McWilliams' classic, The Days Of Pearly Spencer.

0:24:220:24:26

# A tenement, a dirty street

0:24:370:24:42

# Walked and worn by shoeless feet

0:24:420:24:46

# A silence long and so complete

0:24:460:24:51

# Watched by a sh-shivering sun

0:24:510:24:54

# Old eyes in a small child's face

0:24:540:24:59

# Watching as the shadows race

0:24:590:25:03

# Through walls and cracks that leave no trace

0:25:030:25:08

# Daylight's brightness shone

0:25:080:25:11

# Oh, oh, oh

0:25:130:25:17

# The days of Pearly Spencer

0:25:170:25:20

# Oh, oh

0:25:220:25:25

# The race is almost run

0:25:250:25:28

# Hey

0:25:290:25:31

# Aw, duh-duh-doo-dah

0:25:330:25:36

# A nose pressed hard on frosty glass

0:25:430:25:46

# Gazing at the swollen mass

0:25:460:25:51

# On concrete fields where there grows no grass

0:25:510:25:55

# Stumbles blindly on

0:25:550:25:58

# Iron trees smother the air

0:25:580:26:02

# Though withering they stand, they stand and stare

0:26:020:26:07

# Through eyes that neither know nor care

0:26:070:26:10

# Where the grass has gone

0:26:100:26:14

# Ho, ho, woh

0:26:140:26:17

# The days of Pearly Spencer

0:26:170:26:21

# Ah-ah

0:26:210:26:23

# The race is almost run

0:26:250:26:28

# Yeah!

0:26:300:26:31

# Oh, doo-doo-doo, wah, dah, ah

0:26:330:26:37

# Pearly Where's your milk white skin?

0:26:420:26:46

# What's that stubble on your chin?

0:26:460:26:50

# It's buried in the rot-gut gin

0:26:500:26:54

# You've played and lost, not won

0:26:540:26:57

# You've played a house that can't be beat

0:26:570:27:02

# Now, look Your head's bowed in defeat

0:27:020:27:05

# You walked too far along the street

0:27:050:27:10

# Only rats can run

0:27:100:27:12

# Only rats can run, ah!

0:27:140:27:17

# Only rats can run

0:27:170:27:21

# Yeah!

0:27:210:27:22

# Oh-oh

0:27:220:27:24

# The days of Pearly Spencer

0:27:240:27:28

# The race is almost run

0:27:320:27:34

# Yeah!

0:27:340:27:37

# Oh, doo-doo-doo, wah

0:27:400:27:43

# Ee-ee!

0:27:430:27:45

# Doo, dah, doo, dah-dah-dah, doo, dah, yeah

0:27:490:27:52

# Doo, dah, doo, dah-dah-dah!

0:27:520:27:56

# Doo, dah, doo, dah-dah-dum

0:27:560:27:59

# Doo, dah, dah, doo

0:27:590:28:01

# Day, yeah!

0:28:010:28:03

# Doo, dah

0:28:030:28:05

# The days of Pearly Spencer

0:28:050:28:07

# Doo, dah

0:28:070:28:09

# The days of Pearly Spencer

0:28:090:28:11

# Doo, dah The days of Pearly Spencer

0:28:110:28:15

# The days of Pearly Spencer

0:28:150:28:17

# Oh-oh-oh, yeah!

0:28:170:28:20

# Way-oh!

0:28:200:28:21

# Oh-oh-oh, oh!

0:28:210:28:23

# Oh, eh, ah!

0:28:230:28:25

# Oh-oh-oh, oh!

0:28:250:28:27

# Oh, eh, ah!

0:28:270:28:29

# Oh, eh!

0:28:290:28:32

# The days of Pearly Spencer. #

0:28:320:28:36

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:28:360:28:38

The BBC has enjoyed a long relationship with the Ulster Hall,

0:28:420:28:45

so were thrilled when asked to do something a little bit different

0:28:450:28:48

to mark its 150th anniversary.

0:28:480:28:50

It continues to be a very special place for us and here's why.

0:28:500:28:54

'Paul Brady played the Hall on his Irish tour in 1987.

0:28:580:29:02

'We were there to capture it and, as well as playing recent hits

0:29:020:29:06

'such as Follow On and The Island,

0:29:060:29:07

'he delighted the audience with his inimitable version

0:29:070:29:10

'of Arthur McBride.'

0:29:100:29:11

# Oh, me and me cousin One Arthur McBride

0:29:110:29:15

# As we went a-walking down by the seaside

0:29:150:29:19

# Now, mark what followed and what did betide

0:29:210:29:24

# For it being on Christmas morning

0:29:240:29:29

# Now, for recreation We went on a tramp

0:29:290:29:33

# And we met Sergeant Napper and Corporal Vamp

0:29:330:29:37

# And a little, wee drummer

0:29:370:29:40

# Intending to camp

0:29:400:29:43

# For the day being pleasant and charming... #

0:29:430:29:47

Mary Black took her Babes In The Wood tour to the Hall

0:29:470:29:50

in 1992,

0:29:500:29:52

promoting the follow-up to the massive No Frontiers album,

0:29:520:29:54

which had propelled her into the big league of Irish female artists,

0:29:540:29:58

both here and in the States,

0:29:580:30:00

alongside the likes of Enya and Sinead O'Connor.

0:30:000:30:03

# Heaven knows

0:30:030:30:06

# No frontiers

0:30:080:30:11

# And I've seen heaven in your eyes...#

0:30:110:30:17

Rory Gallagher played here in 1984,

0:30:190:30:22

performing with his legendary 1961 sunburst Stratocaster,

0:30:220:30:25

now on display in a Dublin museum.

0:30:250:30:29

Jimi Hendrix was once apparently asked, "What does it feel like

0:30:290:30:32

"to be the greatest guitarist in the world?"

0:30:320:30:34

To which he replied, "Ask Rory Gallagher."

0:30:340:30:36

MUSIC: "I Wonder Who" by Rory Gallagher

0:30:360:30:39

Damien Rice played the Ulster Hall in 2002,

0:30:580:31:03

to promote his album, O,

0:31:030:31:05

which had brought him widespread success here and in the US.

0:31:050:31:08

It featured the singles The Blower's Daughter, Volcano,

0:31:080:31:11

and his biggest hit, the beautiful Cannonball.

0:31:110:31:15

# This stone's taught me to fly

0:31:150:31:17

# And love taught me to lie

0:31:200:31:25

# And life taught me to die

0:31:270:31:31

# So it's not hard to fall

0:31:320:31:36

# When you float like a cannonball... #

0:31:360:31:41

Cara Dillon and Brian Kennedy joined forces

0:31:450:31:48

for the opening concert of the Belfast Festival in 2003.

0:31:480:31:51

Performing once again with the Ulster Orchestra, they raised the roof

0:31:510:31:55

with this powerful rendition of You Raise Me Up.

0:31:550:31:57

# And I am strong when I am on your shoulders

0:31:570:32:05

# Oh, you raise me up

0:32:050:32:09

# To more than I

0:32:090:32:12

# Can be. #

0:32:120:32:17

The Hall closed its doors for major refurbishment in 2007,

0:32:180:32:21

reopening two years later.

0:32:210:32:23

We once again threw a huge concert to celebrate

0:32:230:32:26

and the line-up was a who's who of Northern Irish talent,

0:32:260:32:29

including Divine Comedy...

0:32:290:32:31

# Gigantic, gigantic

0:32:310:32:36

# A big, big love... #

0:32:360:32:38

..Ash...

0:32:380:32:39

# Our nation turns its lonely eyes to you - woo-woo-woo... #

0:32:390:32:43

..Duke Special...

0:32:430:32:45

# Digging, digging Digging an early grave... #

0:32:450:32:51

..Lafaro...

0:32:510:32:53

# Save me... #

0:32:530:32:55

..Iain Archer...

0:32:550:32:58

# I'll be in redemption...

0:32:580:33:01

..Foy Vance...

0:33:010:33:03

# Someday, I'll disappear... #

0:33:030:33:09

..Cashier No. 9...

0:33:090:33:11

# Hey! #

0:33:110:33:14

..Therapy?...

0:33:140:33:15

# Grab it and take it, it's yours An alternative Ulster... #

0:33:150:33:20

..and surprise guests, Snow Patrol, to name a few.

0:33:200:33:24

# If I just lay here

0:33:240:33:28

# Would you lie with me

0:33:280:33:32

# And just forget the world? #

0:33:320:33:33

Everyone took to the stage for the show's finale,

0:33:330:33:36

a rabble-rousing version of Teenage Kicks.

0:33:360:33:39

# Get teenage kicks right through the night

0:33:390:33:41

# All right! #

0:33:410:33:43

That was a show we'll never forget.

0:33:450:33:47

And now we get to do it all again.

0:33:470:33:49

Here's to many more nights in the legendary Ulster Hall.

0:33:490:33:52

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:33:560:33:59

Thank you!

0:33:590:34:01

Our next artist's CV reads like a Who's Who of the music industry.

0:34:140:34:17

He's worked with the likes of Paul McCartney,

0:34:170:34:19

Madonna, Snow Patrol

0:34:190:34:21

and Paul Oakenfold.

0:34:210:34:22

Last year, he was unveiled as the new singer of INXS.

0:34:220:34:25

And he's come all the way from Sydney to be here tonight.

0:34:250:34:28

So fair play to him for that.

0:34:280:34:30

Ciaran Gribbin performing Paul Brady's haunting ballad, The Island.

0:34:300:34:34

# They say the skies of Lebanon are burning

0:34:380:34:42

# Those mighty cedars bleeding in a heap

0:34:430:34:48

# I saw the pictures on the television

0:34:480:34:53

# Women and children dying in the street

0:34:540:34:58

# And we're still at it in our own place

0:35:000:35:04

# Still trying to reach the future through the past

0:35:040:35:09

# Still trying to carve tomorrow

0:35:090:35:12

# From our tombstone

0:35:120:35:16

# But, hey, don't listen to me

0:35:160:35:18

# This wasn't meant to be no sad song

0:35:180:35:22

# We've heard too much of that before

0:35:230:35:26

# Right now I only wanna be

0:35:290:35:32

# Here with you till the morning dew

0:35:320:35:35

# Comes falling

0:35:350:35:39

# I wanna take you to the island

0:35:390:35:44

# And trace your footprints in the sand

0:35:440:35:48

# And in the evening when the sun goes down

0:35:490:35:54

# We'll make love to the sound of the ocean

0:35:540:35:59

# They're raising banners over by the markets

0:36:060:36:12

# Whitewashing slogans on the shipyard's walls

0:36:120:36:16

# Witchdoctors praying for a mighty showdown

0:36:160:36:21

# No way a holy flag is gonna fall

0:36:210:36:27

# Up here we sacrifice our children

0:36:280:36:32

# To feed the worn-out dreams of yesterday

0:36:320:36:36

# And teach them dying will lead them into glory

0:36:380:36:43

# But hey, don't listen to me

0:36:440:36:46

# This wasn't meant to be no sad song

0:36:460:36:50

# I've sang too much of that before

0:36:520:36:56

# Right now I only wanna be here with you

0:36:570:37:01

# Till the morning dew comes falling

0:37:010:37:06

# I wanna take you to the island

0:37:070:37:12

# And trace your footprints in the sand

0:37:120:37:17

# And in the evening when there's no-one around

0:37:180:37:22

# We'll make love to the sound of the ocean

0:37:220:37:26

# I know us plain folks don't see all the story

0:37:340:37:38

# And I know that peace and love's just copping out

0:37:400:37:44

# Maybe those young boys dying in the ditches

0:37:440:37:49

# Is just what being free's all about

0:37:490:37:53

# That twisted wreckage down on main street

0:37:560:38:00

# Will bring us all together in the end

0:38:000:38:03

# And we'll go marching down the road to freedom

0:38:050:38:11

# Freedom

0:38:130:38:17

# Freedom

0:38:180:38:21

# Freedom. #

0:38:230:38:26

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:38:350:38:37

In my opinion, it's the definitive song

0:38:420:38:44

about The Troubles of Northern Island.

0:38:440:38:46

Everybody in this land can relate to those lyrics,

0:38:460:38:49

but at the same time, he goes away from that really heavy subject,

0:38:490:38:54

and brings in the love element to it.

0:38:540:38:56

It's genius songwriting and it's a song that, without a doubt,

0:38:560:39:00

has inspired me as a songwriter.

0:39:000:39:03

He's an amazing singer, as well.

0:39:030:39:06

A lot of people just think of Paul Brady as a wonderful songwriter...

0:39:060:39:09

It's a tough one to sing,

0:39:090:39:11

and I just hope I do the song justice.

0:39:110:39:13

Say you were telling the rest of the guys in INXS to play Belfast

0:39:130:39:16

and selling the Ulster Hall. What would you say?

0:39:160:39:18

The Ulster Hall was always that place

0:39:180:39:21

where you were like, "I'm going to be there some day."

0:39:210:39:24

It IS that definitive venue.

0:39:240:39:27

A lot of bands... We all know the history of the place,

0:39:270:39:30

all the great bands that have been through the doors.

0:39:300:39:33

It just means a lot to the people here,

0:39:330:39:35

particularly the musicians here.

0:39:350:39:38

It truly is a legendary venue.

0:39:380:39:41

Any sort of stand-out gigs for you?

0:39:410:39:43

I saw...

0:39:430:39:45

Def Leppard and Bon Jovi within a short space of time.

0:39:450:39:50

I was like 14 or something.

0:39:500:39:52

I was just getting into bands and stuff at that time.

0:39:520:39:55

You're seeing those bands in here.

0:39:550:39:59

At that age, you're just a sponge.

0:39:590:40:01

You see it and all the flashing lights, the rock & roll of it all,

0:40:010:40:05

and you're just going, "THAT'S what I want to do."

0:40:050:40:07

I've no doubt in my mind, at that age, I was massively influenced

0:40:070:40:10

by this venue, seeing bands in here,

0:40:100:40:12

just going, "Wow!" Then, down the years,

0:40:120:40:14

it's just been so many, you know.

0:40:140:40:17

Local bands, as well.

0:40:170:40:19

Bands like And So I Watch You From Afar

0:40:190:40:22

and people who are regularly playing this place now in the local scene.

0:40:220:40:26

It just goes to show you how much it means to the local music scene.

0:40:260:40:31

Next on stage is Rams' Pocket Radio,

0:40:350:40:38

effectively Peter McCauley, a multi-instrumentalist

0:40:380:40:40

and piano aficionado from Lisburn.

0:40:400:40:43

He started out as a percussionist with the National Youth Orchestra

0:40:430:40:46

and tonight he's performing an extremely individual interpretation

0:40:460:40:49

of a genuine punk classic -

0:40:490:40:51

Stiff Little Fingers' Alternative Ulster.

0:40:510:40:54

# There's nothing for us in Belfast The Pound's so old, it's a pity

0:40:560:41:00

# OK, there's the Trident in Bangor

0:41:000:41:03

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:43:390:43:42

Thank you.

0:43:470:43:49

With so much happening on stage tonight,

0:43:490:43:51

we need a whole other programme to show it all.

0:43:510:43:54

Best we can do is offer some further highlights

0:43:540:43:56

of The Great Northern Songbook.

0:43:560:43:59

Barry Lynn, sometimes known as Boxcutter or The Host,

0:44:110:44:14

is a producer and guitarist from Lurgan, mainly known

0:44:140:44:17

for his instrumental, bass-driven electronica and dubstep.

0:44:170:44:21

He's performing his version of Hill Of Thieves, written by Cara Dillon.

0:44:210:44:25

GUITAR AND ORCHESTRA PLAY

0:44:270:44:29

And So I Watch You From Afar are an instrumental band

0:46:450:46:48

with a fantastic live reputation,

0:46:480:46:50

having gigged extensively throughout the UK, Europe and Russia.

0:46:500:46:54

They've previously sold out the Ulster Hall,

0:46:540:46:56

and are performing their version of another local classic -

0:46:560:46:59

Big Time, by Rudi.

APPLAUSE AND CHEERING

0:49:160:49:18

Some incredible performances,

0:49:180:49:20

but I'm joined now by Miss Bronagh Gallagher, how are you?

0:49:200:49:23

This is my first time in the Ulster Hall.

0:49:230:49:26

And I have Rory Gallagher, Live at the Ulster Hall, and I've always wanted

0:49:260:49:30

to be in a gig at the Ulster Hall, so to perform at it is incredible.

0:49:300:49:34

So your experience of the Ulster Hall is watching a DVD,

0:49:340:49:37

-then, of a legendary show?

-Yeah, yeah, yeah.

0:49:370:49:40

Now, we're assuming it would have been incredibly nerve-wracking

0:49:400:49:42

-to perform with the Ulster Orchestra.

-It's a real honour.

0:49:420:49:45

It's very moving, the whole thing, actually, to be quite honest.

0:49:450:49:48

When you hear your work played at that, you know, that velocity,

0:49:480:49:52

it's amazing.

0:49:520:49:53

So it's terrifying, as well as very exciting. I'm a bit nervous.

0:49:530:49:57

So your track tonight is one of the newer songs

0:49:570:49:59

in The Great Northern Songbook. Were you a big fan before tonight?

0:49:590:50:03

Yeah, I'm a huge fan of the artist that I'm singing, so, yeah,

0:50:030:50:06

I was honoured to be given this one, it's great. I love it.

0:50:060:50:09

You know, he's an incredibly talented songwriter, and musician,

0:50:090:50:12

and obviously he's used a lot of orchestra in his work in the past,

0:50:120:50:16

and so, you know, it's a huge honour to be there singing one of his songs.

0:50:160:50:21

Especially one that is really a very special song, you know?

0:50:210:50:24

It's a very brilliant song.

0:50:240:50:26

# Save me from the movies Someone else's dreams

0:50:300:50:36

# Angels make their magic Give my spirit wings

0:50:370:50:43

# I just concertina

0:50:430:50:46

# And wrap around the world

0:50:460:50:49

# Staying out till six o'clock Singing like a fool

0:50:510:50:56

# I've only got this morning to live

0:50:580:51:03

# Look at all the colours from my fingertips

0:51:030:51:10

# I don't want to stand still I just want to freewheel

0:51:110:51:16

# I don't want to lose thi-i-i-is

0:51:160:51:22

# I don't want to stand still I just want to freewheel

0:51:220:51:29

# I don't want to lose thi-i-i-is

0:51:290:51:35

# Save my feet from dancing with just anyone at all

0:51:450:51:51

# Worn out shoes cos Otis Blue keeps dancing in the hall

0:51:520:51:57

# And your face in the distance I hope to recognise

0:51:580:52:04

# But it's like running through deep water trying to look into your eyes

0:52:050:52:11

# I've only got this morning to live

0:52:130:52:17

# Look at all the colours on my fingertips

0:52:180:52:24

# I don't want to stand still I just want to freewheel

0:52:250:52:31

# I don't want to lose thi-i-is

0:52:310:52:38

# I don't want to stand still I just want to freewheel

0:52:380:52:45

# I don't want to lose thi-i-is

0:52:450:52:50

# I don't want to stand still I just want to freewheel

0:52:520:52:57

# I don't want to lose thi-i-is

0:52:570:53:03

# I don't want to stand still I just want to freewheel

0:53:030:53:10

# I don't want to lose thi-i-is. #

0:53:100:53:16

APPLAUSE AND CHEERING

0:53:230:53:25

Thank you so much.

0:53:310:53:33

Well, didn't we tell you it was going to be very, very special?

0:53:360:53:40

Amazing to think just how far we've come musically in recent times.

0:53:400:53:43

The Great Northern Songbook is definitely something to be very,

0:53:430:53:46

very proud of. Let's hope it continues to grow.

0:53:460:53:48

Let's end the show, then, with a track that was first

0:53:480:53:50

performed in public in this venue in 1971, believe it or not.

0:53:500:53:54

Led Zeppelin, but tonight, done by The Answer and friends,

0:53:540:53:58

this is Stairway To Heaven.

0:53:580:54:00

Ladies and gentlemen, Mr Tim Wheeler.

0:54:020:54:04

APPLAUSE AND CHEERING

0:54:060:54:09

# There's a feeling I get when I look to the west

0:54:150:54:20

# And my spirit is crying for leaving

0:54:200:54:25

# In my thoughts I have seen rings of smoke through the trees

0:54:260:54:31

# And the voices of those who stand looking

0:54:310:54:37

# Ooh, it makes me wonder

0:54:420:54:47

# If there's a bustle in your hedgerow

0:54:540:54:58

# Don't be alarmed now

0:54:580:54:59

# It's just a spring clean for the May queen

0:55:000:55:03

# Yes, there are two paths you can go by, but in the long run

0:55:050:55:10

# There's still time to change the road you're on

0:55:110:55:15

# And it makes me wonder

0:55:230:55:26

# Ah-ha-ha!

0:55:290:55:30

# Your head is humming and it won't go, because you don't know

0:55:410:55:47

# The piper's calling you to join him

0:55:480:55:51

# Dear lady, can you hear the wind blow? And did you know

0:55:540:55:58

# Your stairway lies on the whispering wind?

0:55:580:56:03

# Ah-ha

0:56:060:56:08

# And as we wind on down the road

0:56:510:56:54

# Our shadows taller than our soul

0:56:560:56:59

# There walks a lady we all know

0:57:010:57:04

# Who shines white light and wants to show

0:57:050:57:09

# How everything still turns to gold

0:57:110:57:14

# And if you listen very hard

0:57:150:57:18

# The tune will come to you at last

0:57:200:57:23

# When all is one and one is all

0:57:250:57:29

# To be a rock but not to ro-o-o-oll

0:57:300:57:37

# And she's buying

0:57:560:58:01

# The stairway to heaven. #

0:58:010:58:07

# Ah-h-h-h-h-h! #
