If there's one venue in Northern Ireland that holds a special place | 0:00:07 | 0:00:10
in the heart of music lovers, | 0:00:10 | 0:00:12
it's got to be Belfast's Ulster Hall. | 0:00:12 | 0:00:14
It's hosted countless legendary shows down the decades and tonight, | 0:00:14 | 0:00:18
we celebrate its 150th anniversary. | 0:00:18 | 0:00:20
To mark the occasion, we're going to throw a party - | 0:00:20 | 0:00:23
something a little bit different, | 0:00:23 | 0:00:25
as we celebrate not just the hall, | 0:00:25 | 0:00:26
but the incredible back catalogue of songs written by Northern Irish artistes. | 0:00:26 | 0:00:30
We selected 32 classics and asked for you to vote for your top ten. | 0:00:30 | 0:00:34
Tonight, those songs will be performed by contemporary Northern Irish acts | 0:00:34 | 0:00:38
in their own fashion... | 0:00:38 | 0:00:40
accompanied by the Ulster Orchestra. | 0:00:40 | 0:00:42
It's going to be special so, folks, | 0:00:42 | 0:00:44
welcome to The Great Northern Songbook. | 0:00:44 | 0:00:46
Ladies and gentlemen, a potted history of the Ulster Hall. | 0:01:16 | 0:01:19
Doors opened in 1862, around 7.00pm. | 0:01:19 | 0:01:23
Originally a ballroom, it quickly took on a life of its own. | 0:01:23 | 0:01:26
Who'll forget Charles Dickens' farewell/comeback/greatest hits tour in 1869, | 0:01:26 | 0:01:31
laying the path for great icons to visit over the next century or so? | 0:01:31 | 0:01:34
But it hasn't always been easy. | 0:01:34 | 0:01:36
It's played an important part in the political history of Northern Ireland, too... | 0:01:36 | 0:01:40
from the signing of the Ulster Covenant in 1912, | 0:01:40 | 0:01:43
to the formation of the Ulster Resistance. | 0:01:43 | 0:01:46
It's continued to be the home of political rallies and debates. | 0:01:46 | 0:01:49
And it's also opened its doors to sporting fans, | 0:01:49 | 0:01:51
from the 1940s, when Belfast boxing hero "Rinty" Monaghan | 0:01:51 | 0:01:55
stepped into the ring, | 0:01:55 | 0:01:56
to early appearances by world champ, Barry McGuigan. | 0:01:56 | 0:01:59
Giant Haystacks and Big Daddy got down and dirty under its roof, | 0:01:59 | 0:02:02
and people were queueing up to see the likes of Alex Higgins | 0:02:02 | 0:02:04
and Dennis Taylor. | 0:02:04 | 0:02:06
And it's hosted beer festivals, tattoo conventions, | 0:02:06 | 0:02:09
food fairs and everything in between. | 0:02:09 | 0:02:12
But most of us hold the Ulster Hall in our hearts for one reason only, | 0:02:12 | 0:02:15
and that's its amazing musical heritage. | 0:02:15 | 0:02:17
There's no possible way to mention every single band who have graced this stage. | 0:02:17 | 0:02:22
But there have been highlights. | 0:02:22 | 0:02:23
The Rolling Stones turned many young ladies to blubbering wrecks in '65. | 0:02:23 | 0:02:27
Led Zeppelin made musical history, with the world premiere | 0:02:27 | 0:02:30
of Stairway To Heaven in 1971. | 0:02:30 | 0:02:32
A Melody Maker review of the gig described the song as an "excellent ballad". If only they knew... | 0:02:32 | 0:02:38
The Clash tried to play around this time, but the city fathers said no. | 0:02:38 | 0:02:41
It was a second home for Rory Gallagher. The Boomtown Rats | 0:02:41 | 0:02:45
and Motorhead both took to the stage in the late '70s. | 0:02:45 | 0:02:48
'Toyah, The Ramones, The Undertones, Coldplay...' | 0:02:48 | 0:02:51
The Chemical Brothers, Snow Patrol, | 0:02:51 | 0:02:53
the Chilli Peppers... | 0:02:53 | 0:02:55
I could go on and on. | 0:02:55 | 0:02:56
And when it comes to big names, tonight is no exception. | 0:02:56 | 0:02:59
Once again, all these acts doing their own take on tracks chosen | 0:02:59 | 0:03:03
from The Great Northern Songbook by you guys. | 0:03:03 | 0:03:06

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE | 0:06:56 | 0:06:59
-Cara Dillon, welcome to the show. -It's great to be here. | 0:06:59 | 0:07:02
So many people rave about the Ulster Hall and for different reasons, | 0:07:02 | 0:07:05
but, for you, what makes it special? | 0:07:05 | 0:07:07
As a singer, for me, personally, | 0:07:07 | 0:07:09
it is just the acoustics. | 0:07:09 | 0:07:11
Sometimes I joke and call myself "the reverb queen", | 0:07:11 | 0:07:14
because our soundman can't give me enough reverb, sometimes. | 0:07:14 | 0:07:18
But in here, if you didn't have a monitor with reverb in it, | 0:07:18 | 0:07:21
it wouldn't matter. It's so beautiful, your voice just carries. | 0:07:21 | 0:07:24
I think it's probably one of those places that has seen | 0:07:24 | 0:07:28
so much good music over so many years that the walls have absorbed | 0:07:28 | 0:07:32
that sound and it's given it back to everyone who plays here. | 0:07:32 | 0:07:36
When you first heard you'd be doing Teenage Kicks, | 0:07:36 | 0:07:39
what was your reaction? Did that feel it would be a big challenge? | 0:07:39 | 0:07:42
No...it was a lottery, really. | 0:07:42 | 0:07:45
I was holding my breath, waiting to see what it was going to be. | 0:07:45 | 0:07:48
It's so funny to get this song. | 0:07:48 | 0:07:51
For me, it seemed kind of ridiculous. | 0:07:51 | 0:07:53
It's such a challenge and I wanted to do it, cos it's an AMAZING song. | 0:07:53 | 0:07:57
And it's a song which | 0:07:57 | 0:07:58
I remember growing up and listening to in the car constantly | 0:07:58 | 0:08:04
and because they're from Derry, | 0:08:04 | 0:08:06
I was just delighted to get this song. | 0:08:06 | 0:08:09
I didn't know what way I was going to do it. | 0:08:09 | 0:08:11
I just love the arrangement, the way it's all been slowed down. | 0:08:11 | 0:08:15
It shows that a good song can be interpreted... | 0:08:15 | 0:08:19
and can survive the test of time. It's great. | 0:08:19 | 0:08:22
Our next band are arguably the best live act in the country today. | 0:08:22 | 0:08:26
Good enough to share stages with the likes of AC/DC, the Stones and Aerosmith. | 0:08:26 | 0:08:30
from County Down, it's The Answer, | 0:08:30 | 0:08:32
performing the song that topped our poll by a long shot... | 0:08:32 | 0:08:35
and won its author an Ivor Novello Award for songwriting, back in 2001. | 0:08:35 | 0:08:40
It's Shining Light, by Ash. | 0:08:40 | 0:08:42
# Roman candle that burns in the night | 0:08:44 | 0:08:48
# Yeah, you are a shining light | 0:08:48 | 0:08:51
# You lit a torch | 0:08:51 | 0:08:54
# In the infinite | 0:08:54 | 0:08:56

# You are a shining light | 0:09:41 | 0:09:45
# A constellation, once seen | 0:09:45 | 0:09:49

# You are a force You're a constant source | 0:10:03 | 0:10:07

# Incandescent in the darkest night | 0:10:12 | 0:10:16
# Yeah, you are a shining light | 0:10:16 | 0:10:20
# You light up my life | 0:10:21 | 0:10:25

# There ain't nothing that we can do | 0:11:05 | 0:11:09
# Beneath this canopy | 0:11:10 | 0:11:13
# Of stars | 0:11:13 | 0:11:15

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE | 0:12:36 | 0:12:39
Thank you so much! | 0:12:41 | 0:12:43
Our next performer barely needs an introduction. | 0:12:44 | 0:12:47
Put simply, he's one of our most evocative voices - Brian Kennedy. | 0:12:47 | 0:12:51
Brian has performed many times with the author of our next classic, | 0:12:51 | 0:12:54
musical juggernaut, Van Morrison. | 0:12:54 | 0:12:56
Taken from the record that Van will probably be best remembered for, Astral Weeks, | 0:12:56 | 0:13:00
released when he was 23, | 0:13:00 | 0:13:03
this tells the tale of the ever-mysterious Madame George. | 0:13:03 | 0:13:06
# Down on Cyprus Avenue | 0:13:10 | 0:13:12
# The childlike vision leaping into view | 0:13:12 | 0:13:19
# The clicking-clacking of the high-heeled shoe | 0:13:23 | 0:13:28
# Ford and Fitzroy and Madame George | 0:13:28 | 0:13:33
# Marching with the soldier boy behind | 0:13:37 | 0:13:40
# He's much older now with hat on, drinking wine | 0:13:42 | 0:13:47
# And that smell of sweet perfume | 0:13:49 | 0:13:53
# Comes drifting through | 0:13:53 | 0:13:55
# The cool night air like Shalimar | 0:13:56 | 0:14:00
# Outside, they're making all the stops | 0:14:04 | 0:14:08
# The kids out on the street collecting bottle tops | 0:14:10 | 0:14:15
# Going for cigarettes and matches in the shops | 0:14:17 | 0:14:22
# Happy taken Madame George | 0:14:24 | 0:14:27
# That's when you fall | 0:14:31 | 0:14:35
# Whoa-oh-oh-oh, that's when you fall | 0:14:37 | 0:14:40
# Yeah | 0:14:43 | 0:14:45 | |
# That's when you fall | 0:14:45 | 0:14:49
# When you fall into a trance | 0:14:53 | 0:14:56
# Sitting on a sofa Playing games of chance | 0:14:58 | 0:15:03
# With your folded arms and history books you glance | 0:15:06 | 0:15:10
# Into the eyes of Madame George | 0:15:12 | 0:15:17
# And you think you've found the bag | 0:15:20 | 0:15:23
# You're getting weaker | 0:15:26 | 0:15:29
# Your knees begin to sag | 0:15:29 | 0:15:31
# In the corner | 0:15:33 | 0:15:34
# Playing dominoes in drag | 0:15:34 | 0:15:37
# The only and only Madame George | 0:15:39 | 0:15:44
# And then, from outside The frosty window raps | 0:15:48 | 0:15:53
# She jumps up and says, "Lord have mercy, I think it's the cops!" | 0:15:53 | 0:15:58
# And immediately drops everything she got | 0:16:02 | 0:16:05
# Down into the street below | 0:16:07 | 0:16:10
# And you know you got to go | 0:16:15 | 0:16:18
# On the train from Dublin up to Sandy Row | 0:16:21 | 0:16:25
# Throwing pennies at the bridges down below | 0:16:27 | 0:16:31
# And the rain, hail, sleet and snow | 0:16:35 | 0:16:38
# Say goodbye to Madame George | 0:16:41 | 0:16:46
# Dry your eye for Madame George | 0:16:49 | 0:16:53
# Wonder why for Madame George | 0:16:56 | 0:17:00
# And as you leave, the room | 0:17:05 | 0:17:08
# Is filled with music | 0:17:08 | 0:17:10
# Laughing, music, laughing, music | 0:17:10 | 0:17:13
# And all around the room | 0:17:17 | 0:17:20
# And all the little boys come around | 0:17:20 | 0:17:22
# Walking away from it all, so cold | 0:17:22 | 0:17:27
# And as you're about to leave She jumps up and says... | 0:17:31 | 0:17:34
# "Hey, love, you forgot your gloves" | 0:17:38 | 0:17:40
# And the gloves to love The gloves to love | 0:17:47 | 0:17:49
# The gloves to love, the gloves to love, the gloves to love, | 0:17:49 | 0:17:52
# The gloves to love The gloves to love | 0:17:52 | 0:17:54
# Say goodbye to Madame George | 0:17:57 | 0:18:02
# In the backstreets, in the backstreets, in the backstreets. # | 0:18:04 | 0:18:11
APPLAUSE AND CHEERING | 0:18:11 | 0:18:14
Van Morrison, what a song! | 0:18:17 | 0:18:20
I was very fortunate to get to know Van Morrison... | 0:18:20 | 0:18:22
in the very early '90s | 0:18:22 | 0:18:24
and of course, we were always aware of him as an artist. | 0:18:24 | 0:18:27
But I started working with him in around the early '90s, | 0:18:27 | 0:18:30
and I went on tour with him for six years, around the world, | 0:18:30 | 0:18:33
and sang on five of his albums, | 0:18:33 | 0:18:34
but we did, occasionally - very occasionally, | 0:18:34 | 0:18:36
put in Madame George in the live set. | 0:18:36 | 0:18:39
I'm privileged to say the first time I attempted to look at that song, | 0:18:39 | 0:18:42
I did it with Van, | 0:18:42 | 0:18:44
and I sometimes played guitar on it, but mostly I would sing it with him. | 0:18:44 | 0:18:47
So it's one of those songs that's just...in terms of the fabric | 0:18:47 | 0:18:50
of Belfast, it's such an integral part | 0:18:50 | 0:18:54
of the soundtrack of this city, | 0:18:54 | 0:18:55
so I'm proud to be part of it and to give it voice tonight. | 0:18:55 | 0:18:58
Over the years, as a punter, what have been your stand-out moments | 0:18:58 | 0:19:01
in the Ulster Hall? | 0:19:01 | 0:19:02
It's one of those places that, first of all, I used to sing outside the City Hall | 0:19:02 | 0:19:06
as a little busker. | 0:19:06 | 0:19:08
It was one of those places you knew had this incredible, | 0:19:08 | 0:19:10
legendary reputation. | 0:19:10 | 0:19:12
You know, Rory Gallagher - all these people that came here, played here, | 0:19:12 | 0:19:16
rocked the house. | 0:19:16 | 0:19:17
It was always a, kind of, quite aspiration of mine | 0:19:17 | 0:19:21
to come and sing in the Ulster Hall, | 0:19:21 | 0:19:24
so to get to do it in this way, | 0:19:24 | 0:19:26
and to celebrate all these Northern songs is an incredible privilege. | 0:19:26 | 0:19:30
People rave about the Ulster Hall, for different reasons. | 0:19:30 | 0:19:33
For you, what makes it so special? | 0:19:33 | 0:19:35
I think it has to come down to its history, I think. | 0:19:35 | 0:19:38
It's an iconic building. | 0:19:38 | 0:19:39
In terms of the progression of our city, | 0:19:39 | 0:19:43
from the darkest of times, | 0:19:43 | 0:19:45
right through to these brighter times, | 0:19:45 | 0:19:47
the Ulster Hall has just stood there, remaining a really, | 0:19:47 | 0:19:50
I suppose, a kind of a building of hope where, at least, | 0:19:50 | 0:19:52
you don't have to be Protestant or Catholic, or any of that kind of stuff. | 0:19:52 | 0:19:56
When you come to the Ulster Hall, you're there to see music. | 0:19:56 | 0:19:58
You put any kind of politic aside. | 0:19:58 | 0:20:00
I think it's one of the only buildings | 0:20:00 | 0:20:02
that offered that, in the quiet way that it did, | 0:20:02 | 0:20:04
and it has great dignity as a building, too. | 0:20:04 | 0:20:07
So I think that, for me as a performer, | 0:20:07 | 0:20:09
it's one of those places, that when I look back on my career, | 0:20:09 | 0:20:11
I think, "Yeah, I sang in the Ulster Hall." | 0:20:11 | 0:20:14
Next up is General Fiasco, a band | 0:20:14 | 0:20:17
with an army of fans, following their excellent debut, Buildings. | 0:20:17 | 0:20:20
They're back with a new record, | 0:20:20 | 0:20:22
but tonight they're performing a song by, in my opinion, | 0:20:22 | 0:20:25
our finest singer-songwriter, Mr Neil Hannon. | 0:20:25 | 0:20:27
From a classic Divine Comedy record called Promenade, | 0:20:27 | 0:20:30
this is the beautiful, Tonight We Fly. | 0:20:30 | 0:20:33
# Tonight we fly | 0:20:35 | 0:20:39

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE | 0:23:09 | 0:23:11
So, Owen and Enda from General Fiasco, | 0:23:11 | 0:23:13
to sum up the Ulster Hall in a sentence, what would you say? | 0:23:13 | 0:23:15
It's just one of the coolest venues in Belfast, so big and grand. | 0:23:15 | 0:23:19
A massive, high ceiling. It's just a beautiful place. | 0:23:19 | 0:23:21
Going to the Ulster Hall as punters, can you give us any stand-out gigs? | 0:23:21 | 0:23:25
We went to see The Darkness, just before Christmas, | 0:23:25 | 0:23:27
and it was one of the best gigs I've ever been to. | 0:23:27 | 0:23:31
And we've seen Duke Special here. | 0:23:31 | 0:23:34
I think it was the first time that I ever got into a Duke Special concert | 0:23:34 | 0:23:37
was in the Ulster Hall. | 0:23:37 | 0:23:39
I'd tried a couple of times and been turned away for being too young. | 0:23:39 | 0:23:41
I finally got away with it and that was in the Ulster Hall. | 0:23:41 | 0:23:44
-That's a very distressing statistic! -THEY LAUGH | 0:23:44 | 0:23:48
Tell us what it was like to perform with the Ulster Orchestra. | 0:23:48 | 0:23:51
It was just surreal. | 0:23:51 | 0:23:53
We're used to the four of us just standing...in a small space, | 0:23:53 | 0:23:57
squeezed together and playing loud rock music, | 0:23:57 | 0:24:00
and to have all those extra bodies, | 0:24:00 | 0:24:02
all that extra sound behind you, | 0:24:02 | 0:24:04
you can find it difficult just to drop into it | 0:24:04 | 0:24:08
and make it feel natural, just cos it's so unnatural. | 0:24:08 | 0:24:12
You may not have heard much about our next artist, | 0:24:12 | 0:24:14
but we're big fans at BBC Radio Ulster | 0:24:14 | 0:24:16
and she felt like an absolute must for this concert | 0:24:16 | 0:24:18
with the Ulster Orchestra. | 0:24:18 | 0:24:20
She's from Portadown, she's called Katharine Philippa, | 0:24:20 | 0:24:22
and she's performing David McWilliams' classic, The Days Of Pearly Spencer. | 0:24:22 | 0:24:26
# A tenement, a dirty street | 0:24:37 | 0:24:42
# Walked and worn by shoeless feet | 0:24:42 | 0:24:46

The BBC has enjoyed a long relationship with the Ulster Hall, | 0:28:42 | 0:28:45
so were thrilled when asked to do something a little bit different | 0:28:45 | 0:28:48
to mark its 150th anniversary. | 0:28:48 | 0:28:50
It continues to be a very special place for us and here's why. | 0:28:50 | 0:28:54
'Paul Brady played the Hall on his Irish tour in 1987. | 0:28:58 | 0:29:02
'We were there to capture it and, as well as playing recent hits | 0:29:02 | 0:29:06
'such as Follow On and The Island, | 0:29:06 | 0:29:07
'he delighted the audience with his inimitable version | 0:29:07 | 0:29:10

in 1992, | 0:29:50 | 0:29:52
promoting the follow-up to the massive No Frontiers album, | 0:29:52 | 0:29:54
which had propelled her into the big league of Irish female artists, | 0:29:54 | 0:29:58
both here and in the States, | 0:29:58 | 0:30:00
alongside the likes of Enya and Sinead O'Connor. | 0:30:00 | 0:30:03

# This wasn't meant to be no sad song | 0:35:18 | 0:35:22
# We've heard too much of that before | 0:35:23 | 0:35:26
# Right now I only wanna be | 0:35:29 | 0:35:32
# Here with you till the morning dew | 0:35:32 | 0:35:35
# Comes falling | 0:35:35 | 0:35:39
# I wanna take you to the island | 0:35:39 | 0:35:44
# And trace your footprints in the sand | 0:35:44 | 0:35:48
# And in the evening when the sun goes down | 0:35:49 | 0:35:54
# We'll make love to the sound of the ocean | 0:35:54 | 0:35:59
# They're raising banners over by the markets | 0:36:06 | 0:36:12
# Whitewashing slogans on the shipyard's walls | 0:36:12 | 0:36:16
# Witchdoctors praying for a mighty showdown | 0:36:16 | 0:36:21
# No way a holy flag is gonna fall | 0:36:21 | 0:36:27
# Up here we sacrifice our children | 0:36:28 | 0:36:32
# To feed the worn-out dreams of yesterday | 0:36:32 | 0:36:36
# And teach them dying will lead them into glory | 0:36:38 | 0:36:43
# But hey, don't listen to me | 0:36:44 | 0:36:46
# This wasn't meant to be no sad song | 0:36:46 | 0:36:50
# I've sang too much of that before | 0:36:52 | 0:36:56
# Right now I only wanna be here with you | 0:36:57 | 0:37:01
# Till the morning dew comes falling | 0:37:01 | 0:37:06
# I wanna take you to the island | 0:37:07 | 0:37:12
# And trace your footprints in the sand | 0:37:12 | 0:37:17
# And in the evening when there's no-one around | 0:37:18 | 0:37:22
# We'll make love to the sound of the ocean | 0:37:22 | 0:37:26
# I know us plain folks don't see all the story | 0:37:34 | 0:37:38
# And I know that peace and love's just copping out | 0:37:40 | 0:37:44
# Maybe those young boys dying in the ditches | 0:37:44 | 0:37:49
# Is just what being free's all about | 0:37:49 | 0:37:53
# That twisted wreckage down on main street | 0:37:56 | 0:38:00
# Will bring us all together in the end | 0:38:00 | 0:38:03
# And we'll go marching down the road to freedom | 0:38:05 | 0:38:11
# Freedom | 0:38:13 | 0:38:17
# Freedom | 0:38:18 | 0:38:21
# Freedom. # | 0:38:23 | 0:38:26
CHEERING AND APPLAUSE | 0:38:35 | 0:38:37
In my opinion, it's the definitive song | 0:38:42 | 0:38:44
about The Troubles of Northern Island. | 0:38:44 | 0:38:46
Everybody in this land can relate to those lyrics, | 0:38:46 | 0:38:49
but at the same time, he goes away from that really heavy subject, | 0:38:49 | 0:38:54
and brings in the love element to it. | 0:38:54 | 0:38:56
It's genius songwriting and it's a song that, without a doubt, | 0:38:56 | 0:39:00
has inspired me as a songwriter. | 0:39:00 | 0:39:03
He's an amazing singer, as well. | 0:39:03 | 0:39:06
A lot of people just think of Paul Brady as a wonderful songwriter... | 0:39:06 | 0:39:09
It's a tough one to sing, | 0:39:09 | 0:39:11
and I just hope I do the song justice. | 0:39:11 | 0:39:13
Say you were telling the rest of the guys in INXS to play Belfast | 0:39:13 | 0:39:16
and selling the Ulster Hall. What would you say? | 0:39:16 | 0:39:18
The Ulster Hall was always that place | 0:39:18 | 0:39:21
where you were like, "I'm going to be there some day." | 0:39:21 | 0:39:24
It IS that definitive venue. | 0:39:24 | 0:39:27
A lot of bands... We all know the history of the place, | 0:39:27 | 0:39:30
all the great bands that have been through the doors. | 0:39:30 | 0:39:33
It just means a lot to the people here, | 0:39:33 | 0:39:35
particularly the musicians here. | 0:39:35 | 0:39:38
It truly is a legendary venue. | 0:39:38 | 0:39:41
Any sort of stand-out gigs for you? | 0:39:41 | 0:39:43
I saw... | 0:39:43 | 0:39:45
Def Leppard and Bon Jovi within a short space of time. | 0:39:45 | 0:39:50
I was like 14 or something. | 0:39:50 | 0:39:52
I was just getting into bands and stuff at that time. | 0:39:52 | 0:39:55
You're seeing those bands in here. | 0:39:55 | 0:39:59
At that age, you're just a sponge. | 0:39:59 | 0:40:01
You see it and all the flashing lights, the rock & roll of it all, | 0:40:01 | 0:40:05
and you're just going, "THAT'S what I want to do." | 0:40:05 | 0:40:07
I've no doubt in my mind, at that age, I was massively influenced | 0:40:07 | 0:40:10
by this venue, seeing bands in here, | 0:40:10 | 0:40:12
just going, "Wow!" Then, down the years, | 0:40:12 | 0:40:14
it's just been so many, you know. | 0:40:14 | 0:40:17
Local bands, as well. | 0:40:17 | 0:40:19
Bands like And So I Watch You From Afar | 0:40:19 | 0:40:22
and people who are regularly playing this place now in the local scene. | 0:40:22 | 0:40:26
It just goes to show you how much it means to the local music scene. | 0:40:26 | 0:40:31
Next on stage is Rams' Pocket Radio, | 0:40:35 | 0:40:38
effectively Peter McCauley, a multi-instrumentalist | 0:40:38 | 0:40:40
and piano aficionado from Lisburn. | 0:40:40 | 0:40:43
He started out as a percussionist with the National Youth Orchestra | 0:40:43 | 0:40:46
and tonight he's performing an extremely individual interpretation | 0:40:46 | 0:40:49
of a genuine punk classic - | 0:40:49 | 0:40:51
Stiff Little Fingers' Alternative Ulster. | 0:40:51 | 0:40:54
# There's nothing for us in Belfast The Pound's so old, it's a pity | 0:40:56 | 0:41:00
# OK, there's the Trident in Bangor | 0:41:00 | 0:41:03
# Then we walk back to the city | 0:41:03 | 0:41:05
# There's nothing for us in Belfast | 0:41:05 | 0:41:08
# The Pound's so old, it's a pity | 0:41:08 | 0:41:09
# OK, there's the Trident in Bangor | 0:41:09 | 0:41:12
# Then we walk back to the city | 0:41:12 | 0:41:15
# We ain't got nothing but they don't even care | 0:41:15 | 0:41:18
# They don't even know, you know | 0:41:18 | 0:41:20
# We don't need money but we don't even mind | 0:41:20 | 0:41:23
# What we need | 0:41:23 | 0:41:26
# Oh-ho | 0:41:26 | 0:41:28
# Yeah | 0:41:28 | 0:41:30 | |
# Alternative Ulster... # | 0:41:33 | 0:41:34
PIANO AND ORCHESTRA PLAY | 0:41:34 | 0:41:37
# An alternative Ulster... # | 0:41:43 | 0:41:47
PIANO AND ORCHESTRA PLAY | 0:41:47 | 0:41:49
# So take a look where you're living | 0:42:04 | 0:42:05
# The Army on the street | 0:42:05 | 0:42:07
# The RUC dog of oppression | 0:42:07 | 0:42:10
# Is barking at your feet | 0:42:10 | 0:42:13
# Is this the kind of place you wanna live? | 0:42:13 | 0:42:15
# Is this where you wanna be? | 0:42:15 | 0:42:17
# Is this the only life we're gonna have? | 0:42:17 | 0:42:21
# What we need | 0:42:21 | 0:42:24
# Hey-ya-ha! | 0:42:24 | 0:42:27
# Is an alternative Ulster | 0:42:30 | 0:42:33
# Grab it, change it, it's yours | 0:42:33 | 0:42:36
# An alternative Ulster | 0:42:36 | 0:42:39
# Ignore the bores, their laws | 0:42:39 | 0:42:42
# An alternative Ulster | 0:42:42 | 0:42:45
# Be an anti-security force | 0:42:45 | 0:42:48
# Alter your native Ulster | 0:42:48 | 0:42:51
# They say they're a part of you | 0:42:57 | 0:43:00
# But that's not true, you know | 0:43:00 | 0:43:03
# They say they got control of you | 0:43:03 | 0:43:06
# Say you'll never be | 0:43:06 | 0:43:09
# Free | 0:43:09 | 0:43:11 | |
# Free, ho! | 0:43:11 | 0:43:15
# Free | 0:43:15 | 0:43:18 | |
# Yeah | 0:43:18 | 0:43:21 | |
# Get an alternative Ulster. # | 0:43:21 | 0:43:24
PIANO AND ORCHESTRA PLAY | 0:43:24 | 0:43:27
CHEERING AND APPLAUSE | 0:43:39 | 0:43:42
Thank you. | 0:43:47 | 0:43:49
With so much happening on stage tonight, | 0:43:49 | 0:43:51
we need a whole other programme to show it all. | 0:43:51 | 0:43:54
Best we can do is offer some further highlights | 0:43:54 | 0:43:56
of The Great Northern Songbook. | 0:43:56 | 0:43:59
Barry Lynn, sometimes known as Boxcutter or The Host, | 0:44:11 | 0:44:14
is a producer and guitarist from Lurgan, mainly known | 0:44:14 | 0:44:17
for his instrumental, bass-driven electronica and dubstep. | 0:44:17 | 0:44:21
He's performing his version of Hill Of Thieves, written by Cara Dillon. | 0:44:21 | 0:44:25
GUITAR AND ORCHESTRA PLAY | 0:44:27 | 0:44:29
And So I Watch You From Afar are an instrumental band | 0:46:45 | 0:46:48
with a fantastic live reputation, | 0:46:48 | 0:46:50
having gigged extensively throughout the UK, Europe and Russia. | 0:46:50 | 0:46:54
They've previously sold out the Ulster Hall, | 0:46:54 | 0:46:56
and are performing their version of another local classic - | 0:46:56 | 0:46:59
Big Time, by Rudi. | 0:46:59 | 0:47:01
GUITAR SOLO | 0:47:11 | 0:47:13
ORCHESTRA PLAYS | 0:47:24 | 0:47:27
CHEERING | 0:48:50 | 0:48:52
APPLAUSE AND CHEERING | 0:49:16 | 0:49:18
Some incredible performances, | 0:49:18 | 0:49:20
but I'm joined now by Miss Bronagh Gallagher, how are you? | 0:49:20 | 0:49:23
This is my first time in the Ulster Hall. | 0:49:23 | 0:49:26
And I have Rory Gallagher, Live at the Ulster Hall, and I've always wanted | 0:49:26 | 0:49:30
to be in a gig at the Ulster Hall, so to perform at it is incredible. | 0:49:30 | 0:49:34
So your experience of the Ulster Hall is watching a DVD, | 0:49:34 | 0:49:37
-then, of a legendary show? -Yeah, yeah, yeah. | 0:49:37 | 0:49:40
Now, we're assuming it would have been incredibly nerve-wracking | 0:49:40 | 0:49:42
-to perform with the Ulster Orchestra. -It's a real honour. | 0:49:42 | 0:49:45
It's very moving, the whole thing, actually, to be quite honest. | 0:49:45 | 0:49:48
When you hear your work played at that, you know, that velocity, | 0:49:48 | 0:49:52
it's amazing. | 0:49:52 | 0:49:53
So it's terrifying, as well as very exciting. I'm a bit nervous. | 0:49:53 | 0:49:57
So your track tonight is one of the newer songs | 0:49:57 | 0:49:59
in The Great Northern Songbook. Were you a big fan before tonight? | 0:49:59 | 0:50:03
Yeah, I'm a huge fan of the artist that I'm singing, so, yeah, | 0:50:03 | 0:50:06
I was honoured to be given this one, it's great. I love it. | 0:50:06 | 0:50:09
You know, he's an incredibly talented songwriter, and musician, | 0:50:09 | 0:50:12
and obviously he's used a lot of orchestra in his work in the past, | 0:50:12 | 0:50:16
and so, you know, it's a huge honour to be there singing one of his songs. | 0:50:16 | 0:50:21
Especially one that is really a very special song, you know? | 0:50:21 | 0:50:24
It's a very brilliant song. | 0:50:24 | 0:50:26
# Save me from the movies Someone else's dreams | 0:50:30 | 0:50:36
# Angels make their magic Give my spirit wings | 0:50:37 | 0:50:43
# I just concertina | 0:50:43 | 0:50:46
# And wrap around the world | 0:50:46 | 0:50:49
# Staying out till six o'clock Singing like a fool | 0:50:51 | 0:50:56
# I've only got this morning to live | 0:50:58 | 0:51:03
# Look at all the colours from my fingertips | 0:51:03 | 0:51:10
# I don't want to stand still I just want to freewheel | 0:51:11 | 0:51:16
# I don't want to lose thi-i-i-is | 0:51:16 | 0:51:22
# I don't want to stand still I just want to freewheel | 0:51:22 | 0:51:29
# I don't want to lose thi-i-i-is | 0:51:29 | 0:51:35
# Save my feet from dancing with just anyone at all | 0:51:45 | 0:51:51
# Worn out shoes cos Otis Blue keeps dancing in the hall | 0:51:52 | 0:51:57
# And your face in the distance I hope to recognise | 0:51:58 | 0:52:04
# But it's like running through deep water trying to look into your eyes | 0:52:05 | 0:52:11
# I've only got this morning to live | 0:52:13 | 0:52:17
# Look at all the colours on my fingertips | 0:52:18 | 0:52:24
# I don't want to stand still I just want to freewheel | 0:52:25 | 0:52:31
# I don't want to lose thi-i-is | 0:52:31 | 0:52:38
# I don't want to stand still I just want to freewheel | 0:52:38 | 0:52:45
# I don't want to lose thi-i-is | 0:52:45 | 0:52:50
# I don't want to stand still I just want to freewheel | 0:52:52 | 0:52:57
# I don't want to lose thi-i-is | 0:52:57 | 0:53:03
# I don't want to stand still I just want to freewheel | 0:53:03 | 0:53:10
# I don't want to lose thi-i-is. # | 0:53:10 | 0:53:16
APPLAUSE AND CHEERING | 0:53:23 | 0:53:25
Thank you so much. | 0:53:31 | 0:53:33
Well, didn't we tell you it was going to be very, very special? | 0:53:36 | 0:53:40
Amazing to think just how far we've come musically in recent times. | 0:53:40 | 0:53:43
The Great Northern Songbook is definitely something to be very, | 0:53:43 | 0:53:46
very proud of. Let's hope it continues to grow. | 0:53:46 | 0:53:48
Let's end the show, then, with a track that was first | 0:53:48 | 0:53:50
performed in public in this venue in 1971, believe it or not. | 0:53:50 | 0:53:54
Led Zeppelin, but tonight, done by The Answer and friends, | 0:53:54 | 0:53:58
this is Stairway To Heaven. | 0:53:58 | 0:54:00
Ladies and gentlemen, Mr Tim Wheeler. | 0:54:02 | 0:54:04
APPLAUSE AND CHEERING | 0:54:06 | 0:54:09
# There's a feeling I get when I look to the west | 0:54:15 | 0:54:20
# And my spirit is crying for leaving | 0:54:20 | 0:54:25
# In my thoughts I have seen rings of smoke through the trees | 0:54:26 | 0:54:31
# And the voices of those who stand looking | 0:54:31 | 0:54:37
# Ooh, it makes me wonder | 0:54:42 | 0:54:47
# If there's a bustle in your hedgerow | 0:54:54 | 0:54:58
# Don't be alarmed now | 0:54:58 | 0:54:59
# It's just a spring clean for the May queen | 0:55:00 | 0:55:03
# Yes, there are two paths you can go by, but in the long run | 0:55:05 | 0:55:10
# There's still time to change the road you're on | 0:55:11 | 0:55:15
# And it makes me wonder | 0:55:23 | 0:55:26
# Ah-ha-ha! | 0:55:29 | 0:55:30
# Your head is humming and it won't go, because you don't know | 0:55:41 | 0:55:47
# The piper's calling you to join him | 0:55:48 | 0:55:51
# Dear lady, can you hear the wind blow? And did you know | 0:55:54 | 0:55:58
# Your stairway lies on the whispering wind? | 0:55:58 | 0:56:03
# Ah-ha | 0:56:06 | 0:56:08
# And as we wind on down the road | 0:56:51 | 0:56:54
# Our shadows taller than our soul | 0:56:56 | 0:56:59
# There walks a lady we all know | 0:57:01 | 0:57:04
# Who shines white light and wants to show | 0:57:05 | 0:57:09
# How everything still turns to gold | 0:57:11 | 0:57:14
# And if you listen very hard | 0:57:15 | 0:57:18
# The tune will come to you at last | 0:57:20 | 0:57:23
# When all is one and one is all | 0:57:25 | 0:57:29
# To be a rock but not to ro-o-o-oll | 0:57:30 | 0:57:37
# And she's buying | 0:57:56 | 0:58:01
# The stairway to heaven. # | 0:58:01 | 0:58:07
# Ah-h-h-h-h-h! # | 0:58:10 | 0:58:15
