It's been, yeah, like, three years since I did, erm, Skyfall...

So... But 19, 21, 25... You're not 25, so how does that work?

Because I name the albums after how old I am when I start writing them,

so when 19 came out, I was actually 20,

when 21 came out, I was nearly 23, and now I'm 27.

And were you always going to call it, like, your age?

Yeah, cos that was my first breakthrough moment -

I wrote a song on the album called Remedy, and I was 25

-and like, "OK, wheels are in motion, this album's 25."

-Boom!

OK, let's talk about 21, because 21, you know, that...

-The difficult second album.

-Yeah.

You really aced that. I mean, that was nuts.

-It was mad.

-Over 30 million.

-Hmm.

Best-selling record, two years in a row.

-It's phenomenal.

-Yeah.

Was there a moment when you kind of knew,

"Oh, this isn't just an album, this is a thing"?

Yeah, I just remember people making it happen, really,

more than anything I was doing, because I kept having to stop

what I was doing, because I kept having lots of vocal problems.

So I'd go into hiding, not into actual hiding,

but I'd have to go into, like, rest, you know, and not talk.

So that is kind of hiding and, erm, everyone just kept recommending

the album and like losing it or I don't know, giving it away.

I don't know how many people can buy it, it's so ridiculous.

It must be, like, a logical reason for it.

Erm, but I remember the Mercury Awards when 21 was nominated

and I remember it being a bit of a scramble

just to come towards me.

I was just a bit like, whoa, like, you know, chillax, like me,

like, fine. That was the turning point for me,

where I felt a little bit like the album was getting

a lot bigger than I certainly was.

And that's when I, sort of, you know...

Yeah, cos what I like is, this is just a good reminder for everyone,

that sometimes excellence isn't enough.

In terms of breaking America...

-Yeah.

-..there was a bit of... well, a big bit of luck.

-Huge.

The Saturday Night Live, the Saturday Night Live thing.

-Huge luck, yeah, I got SNL, erm...

-SNL.

-The week...

Oh, I know. I've only done it once. I think I'm doing it again, though.

Erm, the week I was doing it was meant to be a normal week,

but the week, erm, after, I think, Sarah Palin was supposed to

do it and because something came up in the campaign, she came

and did the week I was doing it with Josh Brolin.

So it was like one of the most-watched SNL's ever

and then it was two weeks before the Grammy ballot,

which is like when people, like, decide what songs they want

to maybe nominate. So it was, like, literally...

It was like the stars aligned for me

and then I was, yeah, the album shot to number one on iTunes

and I was nominated for a Grammy and then I won one.

I mean, it was a joke. It was a joke.

-Yeah.

Yeah. I'm not really one to talk about politics no more,

my nan would have been livid.

At first, I was a little disappointed it wasn't the Queen,

but then I realised that Prince Charles will be King

for my kid, so I thought that'd be cool.

Er, OK, so here's the thing.

-So, 21, huge thing, you had to follow it.

Something had to happen next and, wow, Hello,

you can't have... Like, it must have exceeded your expectations.

-Ridiculous. Like, what Hello went on to do?

-Well, yeah.

-What is happening?

-What is happening right now.

It's insane. I wasn't... I was hoping it...

I was hoping people would like it and I kind of knew that my, like,

my hardcore fans...

I knew they'd be into it and then, erm, the general reaction to it

blew my mind, like, it really has, like.

-You broke the internet, Adele.

-I know, but do you know what?

I done an interview, like, the week before.

I don't think it's out yet and I was like,

"Oh, I don't really know how important the internet is

"for this campaign."

Cos last time I released an album, there was no Twitter, no Instagram,

that's how drastic it was, it was years ago that I released an album.

And I was just... After that advert that I did,

you know, that went viral, I didn't...

I really under-estimated the power of the internet

and it's really blown my mind.

Now I'm on it here and there -

doing my own thing, not googling myself or nothing like that -

but interact... Not interact.

I haven't got anyone to interact with. Hang on...

Just having a look at the top trends, and it's fascinating.

That's how you find out about stuff. It's like people power.

But it must have been a massive relief.

I was so relieved. Keeping it a secret for so long, it was hard.

When you were... I mean, was there a moment when you kind of thought,

"OK, this is it, I'm in the groove.

I think that was when I was like, "OK, this is like conversational.

I think we've read that there was a moment when you kind of thought,

"You know what? 19, 21, really good albums, might leave it."

I did. I just got really worried that I was never going to make anything

that anyone liked again. It was just being self-critical of myself.

It was nothing else other than that, and also I started to wonder,

maybe 21 being so successful is enough for everyone,

but I realised it wasn't enough for me,

so sorry to make your ears bleed again,

but, you know, it was that thing of,

"Do I or don't I want to go, like, back to my music?"

Obviously, I do,

and I just wanted to make sure that everything was in place

for me to do it, so that I could do it properly, you know?

I can't do anything else. This is all that I like doing.

And the songs on the first two albums,

why people connected to them,

it's that we really kind of saw into your soul.

-I mean, they're really exposing.

-On 19?

-Well, both of them.

-Oh, thanks.

-You really kind of... It's you kind of laid bare.

-Yeah.

And I just wondered, this time, did you...

-Were you more kind of guarded?

-Yeah.

-Were you more self-protective?

Yeah, I was, just because, last time,

no-one was waiting to try and work out what my songs meant

and, you know, I was so open about what the songs were about before

and, you know, I hurt people's feelings with that a little bit,

do you know what I mean? Being so honest

and, you know, being a bit more immature then than I am now,

I was like, "I don't care, he broke my heart, whatever,"

and stuff like that, so I felt quite bad about that

and, you know, I have a lot of different things going on now.

I have a family, you know, that I love and I'm a lioness

and I want to protect them, you know, and stuff like that,

so I'd also like people to interpret these songs how they want to

rather than me shoving it down their throats.

"This one's about the time I, like, punched him

"and, like, went running down Oxford Street!"

I would like people to interpret them...

So everyone who's been in a song,

-have they always worked out that it was them?

-I don't know.

I'm at peace with all of them.

-Absolutely! I'm a mum.

So was there a moment when it mightn't have come back?

No, never. I thought there might be. I was frightened for about a week

until I had to fly to Boston to this guy.

He was like, "This is a very common singer's injury,

"I've done this a million times. Don't worry about it.

"It can be dealt with." I was relieved.

And is the voice exactly the same? Can you write...

You write the same way for your voice? That isn't in your head?

Well, at the very beginning, it changed. It was very clean,

and, you know, obviously, I used to smoke quite a lot,

so all the scars that my voice had from most of my life were gone.

It was like a brand-new voice.

-I can sing a lot higher than I used to.

-Oh, really?

And also a lot lower than I used to, yeah.

She says! Now someone's going to challenge me and I won't be able to.

And then... But, you know, after a while...

Also, in my pregnancy, my voice got a lot lower,

which is why Skyfall's so low. I don't really do very much...

I couldn't get up there for Skyfall. Apparently, it's quite common.

Really? When you're pregnant your... How weird is that?

DEEP VOICE: I was like that when I was pregnant.

So that's why Skyfall's so low.

But now it's kind of, you know, after like gruelling studio sessions,

with me like singing like a demon, it kind of...

Its wear and tear came back, in a good way, I think.

In my speech, the most embarrassing thing, cut in there,

And I was saying to you that, when you were interacting with the fans,

is... The way people react to you is lovely.

It's almost like they're so happy to see you,

but they're not like starstruck. It's like,

-"It's Adele, we know Adele!"

-Maybe that's why.

-But the thing is, keeping a low profile...

Have you seen many of them over the years?

I have seen a couple, yeah.

A couple of drag acts, which I absolutely loved.

Their make-up is epic. So, I have, I have.

Well, we thought it might be fun to get them all together,

a sort of beehive of Adeles, if you will,

and we thought we'd get them to audition at a London theatre

for my new top-secret TV show.

What they didn't know

is that one of the tribute acts...

No, this was...I hadn't seen your disguise...

So, how nervous were you, going into this?

I was really nervous. It was the hardest thing, being some else

pretending to be me,

and then, also, walking towards eight other girls dressed as me,

I hadn't prepared myself for.

It wasn't freak, or anything, just quite overwhelming.

It made me really emotional. They had these really beautiful videos,

almost like audition tapes.

It really, really touched my heart.

They were really beautiful and, yeah,

walking towards them

was really, really amazing, and I really wanted one of them to say,

"I don't like her. Someone said I look like her, so here I am..."

That's what I was hoping for. But they were all so lovely.

But on the day, you were Jenny.

-I was Jenny.

-Let's see how Jenny got on.

-Yeah, let's.

I do like picking my nose, so I can't pick my nose when this is on.

You've given me quite a big one, ain't ya?

So, we're here at the New Wimbledon Theatre,

where a plethora of tribute acts and impersonators

have been arriving to take part in my new show, My Adele.

But there's a twist. The real Adele has spent the morning

disguising herself as Jenny Krug.

And she's going to be coming along here

to celebrate her love for, well, herself.

Now, I hasten to add, I haven't seen her disguise yet.

Will she be able to pull it off?

Well, we're about to find out.

I have to put gloves on cos of all my tattoos.

I was sitting here, it was like a really awkward blind date.

"Will I recognise her when she comes in?"

It makes your eyes look different.

She's made my eyes look more catty,

and then I've got a fake chin, a fake nose

and she's drawn my lips smaller.

Oh, the chin is fake as well?

-I've got a bum chin, so they'd know, I reckon.

-Yeah.

LOW-PITCHED VOICE: I'm going to be Jenny.

Very calm and slow, cos I talk really fast and really harsh.

Of course my day job is, I'm a nanny.

So, nannies talk very slow and very calm,

to try and make the world make sense.

I guess you should go backstage and get ready for this.

I'm a big fan. She's, like, my idol.

So, I've watched all of her shows online,

I've never got to see her live as yet.

I am 20 years older than Adele,

so it's important for me to take 20 years off.

Now, I either put it all on with a trowel or I call in a surgeon.

I have watched the Live At The Albert Hall gig

about a million times,

stood in front of the TV and copied all the movements.

All right, we're about to kick off.

Am I right, this was one of the last tracks to be done?

Literally, while we were mastering the album,

we were mixing this song to go on the record,

-so yeah, it was really last minute that this song got put on.

-OK.

-But you chose to do it tonight?

-Yeah. It's one of my favourites.

It's kind of the story about... I drove past Brockwell Park,

which is a park in south London that I used to live by,

and it's where I spent a lot of my youth. Not my childhood.

I didn't live there then.

It has quite monumental moments of my life that I've spent there,

and I drove past it and I literally just burst into tears.

I really missed it, for no other reason

-than we've all got different things going on.

-Yeah.

It's got nothing to do with me not feeling like

I can't go and sit in there and drink a bottle of cider any more.

It's more that we've all...

Life happens, so I've got no-one to meet there.

That's basically what it is.

And it's just sort of about that,

and about I never realised that this was going to happen.

I never, ever realised, when I had my guitar in the park,

like, singing to my friends, I never...

we never in a million years thought this would ever happen,

you know, so Million Years Ago.

when I was about 16, and it's called Hometown Glory.

It was all about how I felt about London and stuff like that.

I actually wrote it on guitar and I was at school at the time.

I got my friend at school to, like, transpose it onto piano,

cos I probably could play it,

but it would probably take about 12 hours,

cos I'm such a snail on the piano,

trying to sing and play at the same time.

I actually find this song really emotional now

because so much has happened since I wrote it.

It's been, like, 11 years since I wrote it,

so my whole career has happened,

and it's one of my favourites, still, to this day,

so this is Hometown Glory.

I love that. I love it, I love it.

There's something about that song.

It just breaks my heart, cos I think about...the you,

-the 16-year-old you.

-I was little when I wrote that.

-I was little, yeah.

-And, like, who was she?

Like, what...? How big were her dreams?

I mean, I'd be lying

if I said this wasn't what I always wanted to do, because it is.

But that girl can't have known...

No, never in a million years, did I think about this.

I was just hoping to be gigging round London,

headlining the Barfly at some point,

-and, you know, I never even did that, I just sort of bypassed that.

-Yeah.

That was the song that went on Myspace, wasn't it?

-Yeah, put it on Myspace.

-When it got a few thousand hits on Myspace...

Not even that!

At the peak of it, it was maybe, like, 1,200.

And that was mainly my friend Lyndon, who made the Myspace...

He was my first superfan.

He made the Myspace and the day I left college,

he gave me the password and said, "I think you should do this now,

"cos people are starting to e-mail." I thought XL, my label,

I thought, "I can get a scouting job." They'd be, "She's got an

"all right taste in music, let's get her in to look online

-"for the next up-and-coming act," and then they signed me.

-Wow.

I didn't have a manager. They were, "Who's your manager?"

"Dunno. Ain't got one."

-And things happen, like you say, life happens, life changes.

-Yeah.

And one of the big things that happens in anybody's life

-is to become a parent...

-Yeah.

-..to be a mum.

And what did that do to you in terms of just you as a person?

It changed me completely in every single way possible

and something much...

you know, something much bigger than myself happened.

I had been craving that, I think, without realising.

There's a lyric in one of my songs which is about becoming a mum,

which was that, "I find it funny

"that you're the only one I never looked for."

Because I was always, like, yearning for something

and I never knew what it was.

And, you know, then I got pregnant,

and he makes me realise everything about myself

that I like and I don't like, you know.

I think that's why the album's sort of ended up

becoming this sort of journey about how I make myself feel,

rather than how someone else has made me feel,

you know, that I've done before.

You know, you've achieved this enormous success,

you've worked hard, you've got lucky,

-you know, you've grafted...

-I'm very lucky.

-..to get here.

And he's just popped into this world,

he's just popped into all this success. Does that freak you out?

Does that worry you for him?

I think we're doing a great job

and I think that we will do a great job.

And, you know, I'm very conscious of how much my life has changed

and how much his childhood will be very different to mine.

My life has changed. I haven't changed.

We're going to hear something else new from the album,

so is it kind of a happy-clappy song about skipping?

When We Were Young?

When We Were Young, it is a happy song.

It sounds a bit "uhh"!

Well, not like "uhh",

but, you know, it's like a happy sad song.

It will make you think of something that you love or loved.

-In a nice way.

-To me... I haven't heard the whole album,

but the way you're talking, and Hello and Million Years Ago,

it seems this kind of encapsulates what the album is,

-kind of being 25...

-When We Were Young?

-Yeah.

-Absolutely.

When We Were Young is my favourite on the album.

I wrote it with another artist, called Tobias Jesso Jr,

who I love, and if you haven't heard of him you need to listen to him.

He's so fantastic and so beautiful and kind.

So that's one of the reasons,

but also we spoke for hours before we sat down at the piano,

and this song was what we spoke about,

and it is, you know, becoming a parent,

entering my late twenties - ugh! - I feel like I am saying goodbye

to a little side of me and, again,

it's got nothing to do with my career or being well known,

-it's just what happens. Life happens.

-What I love about this is,

everyone remembers this. Even at my age, you remember that thing

-of being 27 and suddenly realising 30's on its way.

-Yeah.

-And, "Oh, my God, this is my youth! I'm in it!"

-Yeah.

I remember things. When I was rehearsing it a couple of weeks ago,

I remember the first time my best friend did my make-up

for us to go clubbing, and it's still my favourite make-up look ever,

and we've got a little photo-booth picture of it.

I remember that, rather than think about that when I was writing it,

so every time I sing it, I think about something else from my past,

-which is wonderful.

-I'm sure we're going to love it.
