CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:00:570:00:59

-Well, here we are. At the Jobcentre.

-Yes, here we are, yes.

0:01:020:01:07

Oh, dear.

0:01:070:01:08

-What?

-Oh, look at this.

-What is it?

0:01:080:01:10

We've got a 75-year-old male just made redundant.

0:01:100:01:14

Oh, no! 75!

0:01:140:01:16

-Yes. Oh, and Welsh!

-BOTH:

-Ooh!

0:01:160:01:21

-Oh! A double whammy.

-Mm.

0:01:210:01:24

What was his job?

0:01:240:01:25

Well, it doesn't sound difficult.

0:01:250:01:27

According to this form he's filled in,

0:01:270:01:30

he had to spin round in a chair...

0:01:300:01:32

..a couple of times a week, and press a button.

0:01:330:01:37

Press a button? At his age it's probably a panic alarm!

0:01:380:01:41

SHE CHUCKLES

0:01:410:01:42

-What...?

-Yes? Oh! It says here he's a bit of a singer.

0:01:420:01:46

-Well, aren't we all?! Let me see that.

-Yes, yeah, all right.

0:01:460:01:49

-Let me see...

-What else... What else is on his CV?

0:01:490:01:51

-It says he's from coal-mining stock.

-What's... What's a coal mine?

0:01:510:01:56

-Says he went to the top of the charts.

-What's... What's the charts?

0:01:560:02:00

-Has been...

-Well, that's obvious!

0:02:000:02:02

No, no, let me finish. LAUGHTER

0:02:020:02:05

Has been one of the highest earners in show business.

0:02:050:02:08

-AUDIENCE:

-Whoo!

-Friendly with Elvis, Sinatra and U2?!

0:02:080:02:11

-Is he deluded?

-Deluded?

0:02:110:02:15

He's away with the fairies. But it's what we're here for.

0:02:150:02:17

-Should we get him in?

-Well, all right. All right.

0:02:170:02:21

CHEERING

0:02:210:02:22

But you can deal with him because you seem to understand "the Welsh".

0:02:220:02:27

Yes, funny that.

CHEERING

0:05:550:05:57

It is a wonderful evening of music and comedy

0:05:570:06:01

and people are already calling it the Welsh Woodstock.

0:06:010:06:06

-I'm Rob Brydon...

-And I'm Tom Jones.

0:06:070:06:10

0:06:470:06:51

So, it's One Big Night here at Wembley Arena

0:07:030:07:05

and I've always wanted to say this...

0:07:050:07:07

Hello, Arena!

0:07:070:07:09

CHEERING

0:07:090:07:11

And, wow, this is one big room,

0:07:110:07:13

-but, Tom, you've played here loads of times, haven't you?

-Yes, I have.

0:07:130:07:16

And I must say, it's great to be back.

0:07:160:07:19

-CHEERING

-Thank you.

0:07:190:07:21

You know, I've never played here before.

0:07:210:07:23

The last time I was in a room this size was in America.

0:07:230:07:26

I was at a huge sporting event.

0:07:260:07:27

-I tell you what they did there, Tom...

-Yeah.

0:07:270:07:29

They turned the camera on the crowd.

0:07:290:07:33

Oh, yeah. Like a kiss cam?

0:07:330:07:35

A kiss cam. Yes, a kiss cam.

0:07:350:07:37

Sounds like baby talk between the Prime Minister and his wife...

0:07:370:07:41

Ooh-uh-uww-uww! TOM LAUGHS

0:07:410:07:43

-But it's... It's a horrible thought, isn't it?

-Terrible.

-It's not.

0:07:430:07:46

It's just a way of breaking the ice at huge gatherings like this.

0:07:460:07:49

Quite simply, if the camera spots you -

0:07:490:07:53

cos, yes, we are going to do it -

0:07:530:07:55

and you see yourself up on the screen,

0:07:550:07:57

you have to kiss the person next to you.

0:07:570:08:00

OK?

0:08:000:08:01

Now then, Tom.

0:08:010:08:02

Is there anything in your huge repertoire that would suit

0:08:020:08:06

a kiss cam?

0:08:060:08:07

Uh, let me... Well, how about this?

0:08:070:08:11

CHEERING

0:11:450:11:48

Wow!

0:11:480:11:49

HE LAUGHS

0:11:490:11:52

Wow, David Walliams.

0:11:540:11:57

Not only a great kisser, but as I just found out,

0:11:570:11:59

able to squeeze the words "I love you" into a single burp.

0:11:590:12:03

Rob, wait a minute, wait a minute.

0:12:030:12:04

-I don't want to interrupt anything romantic...

-No.

0:12:040:12:07

..but, um...

0:12:070:12:08

Why don't we tell the good people why we're really here tonight?

0:12:080:12:11

Well, we've got to be somewhere, Tom.

0:12:110:12:13

-Please be serious, Rob.

-Sorry, Tom.

0:12:130:12:15

There is a fantastic reason that we're here with you all this evening

0:12:150:12:18

and it is to raise money,

0:12:180:12:21

as much money as we possibly can for children who really do need our help.

0:12:210:12:28

And we're going to start

0:12:280:12:29

by telling you about an incredibly brave little girl called Alana.

0:12:290:12:34

Hello, I'm Alana.

0:12:340:12:37

I like to dance, I like to do gymnastics.

0:12:370:12:41

Alana's always been this... This wee dynamo.

0:12:410:12:44

She loves being around people, full of energy.

0:12:440:12:48

I really love karate.

0:12:480:12:50

Hi-yah!

0:12:500:12:51

Growing up, Alana did have eczema.

0:12:510:12:54

Lots of people have it, you treat it,

0:12:540:12:56

and you just go on living your life quite happily.

0:12:560:12:59

Three, two, one...

0:12:590:13:00

But in 2014, Alana's eczema took a dramatic turn for the worse.

0:13:000:13:05

She woke up one day, pretty much her whole body was red.

0:13:050:13:09

Some parts of her skin looked like

0:13:090:13:10

they'd been scalded with boiling water.

0:13:100:13:13

It's a lot more serious than people might think it is.

0:13:130:13:17

But it was, it was eczema.

0:13:170:13:19

Alana's eczema was so severe she was admitted to hospital.

0:13:190:13:23

I was just, like, really itchy and I couldn't stop.

0:13:230:13:27

It felt like there wasn't any skin on my arm.

0:13:270:13:31

It's horrible. People should never experience that in their life,

0:13:310:13:33

that their child's in so much discomfort

0:13:330:13:36

that they're pleading with you to stop the pain.

0:13:360:13:38

She became quite self-conscious.

0:13:380:13:42

It's not just the skin that's affected, it's her self-esteem,

0:13:420:13:45

her self-image.

0:13:450:13:47

My eczema did make me cry.

0:13:470:13:49

I just wanted to have skin like other people.

0:13:490:13:52

HE EXHALES DEEPLY

0:13:530:13:55

It really is heartbreaking.

0:13:550:13:56

You want to take that pain away from them, but you just can't.

0:13:560:14:00

With Alana's skin condition being so extreme,

0:14:030:14:06

her family were introduced to Eczema Outreach Scotland,

0:14:060:14:09

a Children In Need supported charity who help families living with eczema.

0:14:090:14:14

It's quite hard to understate the importance of

0:14:140:14:17

Eczema Outreach Scotland

0:14:170:14:18

and the impact they've had on our family -

0:14:180:14:20

engaging with other parents

0:14:200:14:22

that understand our fears and our worries.

0:14:220:14:24

So, today, we're going to have a think about how our eczema makes us feel.

0:14:240:14:27

-I'm going to draw a hedgehog.

-A jaggy hedgehog?

0:14:270:14:29

Yeah.

0:14:290:14:30

'I'm not the only one that has eczema.'

0:14:300:14:33

There's other children that have it as well, it's not only me.

0:14:330:14:37

It just made me feel happy and excited.

0:14:370:14:40

She's got her confidence back.

0:14:400:14:42

She done a talk at school about eczema.

0:14:420:14:44

I got this certificate

0:14:440:14:46

for standing up and telling people about my eczema

0:14:460:14:52

and telling them that it's not catchable if I just touch you.

0:14:520:14:57

It was great. It's like seeing Alana as we know Alana to be.

0:14:570:15:01

At the moment, Alana's eczema, it's under control.

0:15:010:15:04

She will still have the occasional flare up,

0:15:040:15:06

the difference now is we know what to do.

0:15:060:15:08

I can pick up the phone,

0:15:080:15:10

I can contact someone who can provide that support.

0:15:100:15:13

Because if we hadn't become part of Eczema Outreach Scotland...

0:15:130:15:16

..I really don't know, I really don't know where I would be.

0:15:170:15:19

There are thousands more children just like Alana all across the UK

-James, how do you feel?

-Extraordinary.

0:20:250:20:28

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:20:280:20:30

Yeah!

0:20:300:20:32

Thank you so much.

0:20:330:20:35

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:20:390:20:41

Fantastic. How lovely to see two singers in total harmony.

0:20:460:20:51

-Well...

-All you need now is three more who can't hold a note,

0:20:510:20:55

you could start a boy band. LAUGHTER

0:20:550:20:57

Now, then, Tom, it's been a long career.

0:20:570:21:01

-Yes.

-Hasn't it?

0:21:010:21:02

It has.

0:21:020:21:03

A very long career, but I will say this - throughout it all,

0:21:030:21:07

you've not put a foot wrong.

0:21:070:21:11

-Oh!

-Not a foot wrong.

-Really?

0:21:110:21:14

Stylistically, with the clothes,

0:21:140:21:16

you've never worn clothing that would now be considered a bit silly,

0:21:160:21:22

-a bit foolish...

-No.

0:21:220:21:24

..a bit ill-advised.

0:21:240:21:25

You've never done dance moves that might look a bit silly,

0:21:250:21:30

-a bit foolish, a bit ill-advised.

-No.

0:21:300:21:33

And this is not just my opinion.

0:21:330:21:35

We asked some young people, some very young people

0:21:350:21:39

to check out your moves and your outfits through the years.

0:21:390:21:43

-Have a look at this.

-OK.

0:21:430:21:46

# Just help yourself to my lips

0:21:460:21:48

# To my arms, just say the word and they are yours... #

0:21:480:21:53

I think that picture in the background looks a bit like, um...

0:21:530:21:57

-I forgot.

-Michael Jackson or Bruno Mars.

-No!

0:21:570:22:00

Not a singer, someone's that very popular.

0:22:000:22:03

-He reminds me of Elvis Presley.

-OTHERS: Yeah!

0:22:030:22:06

-It's, um...

-I think it's Michael Jackson.

0:22:060:22:09

THEY LAUGH HYSTERICALLY

0:22:090:22:11

It looks like Simon Cowell.

0:22:110:22:13

It's David Cameron.

0:22:130:22:15

His hair doesn't look like David Cameron.

0:22:150:22:18

Yeah, I mean that picture in the background.

0:22:180:22:21

# Just help yourself to my lips

0:22:210:22:24

# To my arms, just say the word and they are yours... #

0:22:240:22:28

I think, um, he likes the girls.

0:22:280:22:32

"Oh, hello, love, how are you doing?"

0:22:320:22:35

He can only marry one of them.

0:22:350:22:37

-Yeah.

-You can't marry all of them. You can't marry a lot of them.

0:22:370:22:41

But King Henry did that because he's the king.

0:22:410:22:44

# Let me see what spring is like

0:22:440:22:47

-# On Jupiter and Mars... #

-LAUGHTER

0:22:470:22:50

# In other words... #

0:22:500:22:52

His clothes look a bit too tight

0:22:520:22:55

and he's probably trying not too wince that they're too tight.

0:22:550:23:00

# Darling

0:23:000:23:02

# Kiss me... #

0:23:020:23:04

ALL: Eurgh!

0:23:040:23:06

Whoo!

0:23:060:23:07

THEY GIGGLE

0:23:090:23:11

THEY HOOT WITH LAUGHTER

0:23:140:23:17

-Ooh...

-Wow.

0:23:200:23:21

Look at him dance around like a dog.

0:23:280:23:30

-Like a dog!

-A monkey! A monkey!

0:23:300:23:33

OTHERS: Yeah!

0:23:330:23:34

# I have always thought

0:23:340:23:36

# That it's a crime... #

0:23:360:23:40

He walks like a little old man

0:23:400:23:43

that cannot walk any more.

0:23:430:23:44

-He looks like...

-He looks like my dad with hair.

0:23:460:23:49

I have no idea who he is.

0:23:490:23:52

Yo!

0:23:520:23:53

Yo!

0:23:560:23:58

It's like he's hitting his head, like...

0:23:590:24:01

What kind of dance is that?

0:24:040:24:05

I think he's famous for doing whatever he's doing right now.

0:24:050:24:09

The way he's dancing, it looks like he doesn't know how to dance.

0:24:090:24:12

-And he looks like a dude.

-THEY CHORTLE

0:24:120:24:15

There, shaking bum, shaking bum!

0:24:150:24:18

# That's the way to do it

0:24:180:24:20

# Come on, woman! #

0:24:210:24:23

THEY GIGGLE

0:24:230:24:24

THEY GUFFAW

0:24:240:24:26

# Shake! #

0:24:260:24:27

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:31:000:31:04

Thank you!

0:31:040:31:06

Thank you very much.

0:31:060:31:07

Thank you.

0:31:080:31:09

Last year, Children In Need changed the lives

0:31:100:31:13

of nearly half a million children and young people across the UK.

0:31:130:31:18

We want to show you a film now about two brothers.

0:31:180:31:22

It's a tough watch, but it does show

0:31:220:31:25

how even in the most unbearable of times,

0:31:250:31:28

music can help to ease the pain.

0:31:280:31:31

So let me please introduce you to a wonderful little boy.

0:31:310:31:35

His name is Dylan.

0:31:350:31:37

And if you just come over here, please.

0:31:380:31:42

This is my brother's pyjamas

0:31:420:31:44

and someone very clever knitted them all together into a monkey,

0:31:440:31:49

because Tyler had died by this point and we didn't need them any more.

0:31:490:31:54

-Mum!

-Ooh!

0:31:540:31:55

In January 2013, Dylan's brother Tyler was diagnosed

0:31:570:32:01

with a rare neurological disease,

0:32:010:32:04

infantile metachromatic leukodystrophy.

0:32:040:32:08

There is no cure.

0:32:080:32:09

Being told that actually he's going to die, that was quite a tough day.

0:32:110:32:17

-We were just in total shock, weren't we?

-Mm.

0:32:170:32:19

Over the following months,

0:32:220:32:24

Dylan and his parents could only watch

0:32:240:32:26

as Tyler's body began to shut down.

0:32:260:32:29

He couldn't walk and he was struggling to feed himself.

0:32:300:32:34

He wasn't able to sit up any more.

0:32:340:32:36

He was really in some pain.

0:32:360:32:38

That was really tough.

0:32:390:32:40

We needed to spend as much time with him

0:32:420:32:44

and make his life as happy as possible

0:32:440:32:46

-and make lots of lovely memories together.

-Mm.

0:32:460:32:49

-Hello, Andy!

-Hi, Dylan, how are you doing?

-I'm OK, thanks.

-This is Andy.

0:32:510:32:55

-Nice to see you again.

-I'm being filmed today, Andy.

0:32:550:32:58

-I know!

-I'm all hooked up.

-All hooked up?

0:32:580:33:02

Andy is a music therapist from a charity called Thomas's Fund.

0:33:020:33:06

He first visited the house 16 months ago,

0:33:060:33:09

when Tyler was still alive.

0:33:090:33:11

My memories of him are wonderful. Just such a precious, lovely boy.

0:33:120:33:17

Every time I come to visit Dylan,

0:33:190:33:22

Tyler's the reason, Tyler's picture comes out.

0:33:220:33:26

It's my brother. He's always in our music.

0:33:260:33:29

Tyler loved the chimes, so Andy would set up the chimes

0:33:300:33:34

and Tyler would be lying in my arms

0:33:340:33:37

and he'd move his arm and it'd brush across the chimes.

0:33:370:33:40

He went like this.

0:33:400:33:41

CHIMES JANGLE

0:33:410:33:43

ANDY: He did, didn't he? He used his hands.

0:33:430:33:45

I think he enjoyed his music.

0:33:490:33:51

He loved it. Those times I spent with Tyler on my lap

0:33:540:33:58

with Andy were just really, really special.

0:33:580:34:01

Just over a year ago,

0:34:050:34:07

Tyler finally lost his battle with the disease.

0:34:070:34:11

He was three.

0:34:110:34:12

The doctor came and shone a light into his eyes and said,

0:34:150:34:19

"I'm so sorry, he's not alive any more,"

0:34:190:34:22

and then my dad carried him out of the house.

0:34:220:34:26

He got put into this van

0:34:260:34:29

and was taken away.

0:34:290:34:31

After Tyler passed away, Andy got in touch and he just asked

0:34:350:34:38

if Dylan would like to have some music sessions with him.

0:34:380:34:42

-I'm laughing in there!

-ANDY: You're laughing?

0:34:430:34:45

When I see Dylan with Andy, I just see happiness.

0:34:450:34:47

He just enjoys it so much.

0:34:470:34:49

THEY GIGGLE

0:34:490:34:50

With your donations, we'd like to help more families like Dylan's

0:34:500:34:54

with music therapy.

0:34:540:34:55

It's only afterwards that you realise

0:34:590:35:01

just how important those times were

0:35:010:35:04

and why something like Thomas's Fund has such an important part to play

0:35:040:35:07

in the lives of terminally ill children.

0:35:070:35:10

-DYLAN:

-I like to think he's just moved countries.

0:35:110:35:15

He's still alive, he's just moved countries.

0:35:150:35:18

But that's not the case, cos he's really gone to heaven.

0:35:210:35:25

Now, a lot of us watch films like that and we want to donate,

0:35:320:35:37

but we tend to put it off and then never do anything about it,

0:35:370:35:40

so please don't be one of those people, please pick up the phone now.

0:35:400:35:45

You can choose to donate £5 or £10.

0:35:450:35:50

Now, then, another amazing organisation

0:36:190:36:22

supported by Children In Need

0:36:220:36:24

is the Chickenshed Theatre Company

0:36:240:36:26

and I am delighted to say

0:36:260:36:28

that a group of their young performers are here tonight

0:36:280:36:32

to perform with Tom and the UK's biggest country music act,

0:36:320:36:36

The Shires!

0:36:360:36:37

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:36:370:36:39

0:37:530:37:55

# You really loved me

0:37:550:37:58

# And no-one else could come between

0:37:580:38:03

# But now you've left me and you love another

0:38:030:38:09

# You have shattered all my dreams

0:38:090:38:14

# Please don't take my sunshine away

0:38:300:38:35

# Please don't take my sunshine away

0:38:350:38:41

# Please don't take my sunshine away. #

0:38:410:38:48

-Yeah!

-CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:38:480:38:51

Wow!

0:38:530:38:54

I thought I was seeing double then.

0:38:550:38:57

You didn't tell me you had a sister.

0:38:570:38:59

OK, come along, children, come along.

0:39:010:39:03

The moon is shining bright,

0:39:030:39:05

so we've got to get on board, down the river float,

0:39:050:39:09

and raise a ruckus tonight.

-CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

-Yeah!

0:42:440:42:46

How about this?

0:42:500:42:52

My new backing group!

0:42:520:42:54

There they are.

0:42:550:42:56

I am hosting Children In Need this year.

0:42:580:43:02

Right. Wh-why...? Why?

0:43:040:43:06

Cos they've asked me.

0:43:060:43:08

That's why I've lured you here, is to say to you,

0:43:080:43:10

"Will you come and be a part of it?"

0:43:100:43:12

I thought Terry Wogan did Children In Need.

0:43:130:43:16

Terry does the Friday night show. This is the sort of rock show.

0:43:160:43:19

This is a big concert.

0:43:190:43:20

So he's been relegated?

0:43:220:43:24

Cos I think if you play your cards right,

0:43:240:43:26

you could be the next Terry Wogan.

0:43:260:43:29

IN TERRY WOGAN'S VOICE: If I could inherit

0:43:290:43:31

that mantle of whimsy from old Tel...

0:43:310:43:32

-IN WOGAN'S VOICE:

-If Rob Brydon thinks

0:43:320:43:34

I'm going to pass on the mantle

0:43:340:43:36

of Woganville to that young Welsh whippersnapper,

0:43:360:43:39

he's got another think coming.

0:43:390:43:41

What old Tel doesn't realise is I may come in

0:43:410:43:43

and steal it from under his nose.

0:43:430:43:45

I shall be doing a much better impersonation of Terry Wogan

0:43:450:43:48

than that one that you just did there, Mr Rob Brydon.

0:43:480:43:51

So, Terry, he's on the main night. This one is me and Tom Jones.

0:43:520:43:57

Me and Tom.

0:44:000:44:02

# The old home town

0:44:020:44:03

# Looks the same... #

0:44:030:44:05

Why does he sing that in an American accent?

0:44:050:44:07

-IN TOM JONES'S VOICE:

-As I awake and look around me,

0:44:070:44:09

at these four grey walls that surround me

0:44:090:44:12

and I realise, yes, I was only dreaming...

0:44:120:44:16

You think it should be more Welsh?

0:44:160:44:18

IN HEAVY WELSH ACCENT: Then I awake, I look around me,

0:44:180:44:20

and I'm not going to lie to you, I realise, o-ho, I was only dreaming.

0:44:200:44:23

He doesn't have to do it like that. You're doing it in a silly voice.

0:44:230:44:26

You could just do it in a normal way.

0:44:260:44:27

-IN WELSH ACCENT:

-As I awake and look around me

0:44:270:44:29

-at these grey walls that surround me...

-That's Neil Kinnock!

0:44:290:44:32

IN KINNOCK'S VOICE: I awake and look around me...

0:44:320:44:34

-I can't do it.

-That's Frank Spencer.

-I know!

0:44:340:44:36

-IN FRANK SPENCER'S VOICE:

-As I awake and look around me,

0:44:360:44:38

at these four grey walls that surround me,

0:44:380:44:40

and I realise... Neil Kinnock would be...

0:44:400:44:42

-IN KINNOCK'S VOICE:

-As I awake and look around me,

0:44:420:44:44

at these four grey walls that surround me

0:44:440:44:46

and I realise I was only dreaming.

0:44:460:44:49

# He always runs

0:44:490:44:52

BOTH: # While others walk

0:44:520:44:55

# He acts

0:44:550:44:57

# While other men just talk

0:44:570:45:02

# He looks

0:45:020:45:04

# At this world and wants it a-a-all

0:45:040:45:11

# Then he strikes

0:45:110:45:13

# Like Thunderba-a-a-a-all. #

0:45:130:45:31

ROB GRUNTS

0:45:310:45:32

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:45:320:45:34

MUSIC: It's Not Unusual

0:45:530:45:56

# It's not unusual to be loved by anyone

0:46:030:46:07

# It's not unusual to have fun with anyone

0:46:080:46:12

0:46:400:46:45

# If you should ever want to be loved by anyone

0:46:450:46:48

# It's not unusual, it happens every day

0:46:500:46:54

# No matter what you say

0:46:540:46:57

# It's not unusual to be mad with anyone

0:47:240:47:28

# It's not unusual to be sad with anyone

0:47:290:47:33

# And if I ever find that you've changed at any time

0:47:340:47:39

0:47:390:47:46

# It's not unusual

0:48:150:48:17

# It's not unusual. #

0:48:170:48:19

Yeah!

0:48:230:48:24

-CHEERING

-Whoo!

0:48:300:48:32

Thank you, Dame Evelyn Glennie.

0:48:330:48:37

When I was 14, I was really active -

0:48:460:48:49

outside all the time,

0:48:490:48:50

covered in mud and everything.

0:48:500:48:53

I loved to play netball.

0:48:530:48:55

I used to horse ride as well. Just loved the outdoors, basically.

0:48:550:48:59

She wasn't one to sit in front of the television at all.

0:49:010:49:03

She was always a busy teenager.

0:49:030:49:06

She helped to look after some ponies

0:49:060:49:08

and she did that for three months before we got her her own horse.

0:49:080:49:12

I would see her, like, every day

0:49:120:49:14

and I could call her and she'd recognise my voice.

0:49:140:49:16

You just, like, have a bond.

0:49:160:49:18

But one Saturday morning, something happened

0:49:200:49:23

that would change the lives of Ashleigh and her family forever.

0:49:230:49:27

PHONE RINGS

0:49:270:49:28

When I first got the call,

0:49:280:49:30

the lady said that Ashleigh had come off her horse...

0:49:300:49:34

and I never thought it was going to be that bad.

0:49:340:49:38

I just thought of a broken bone.

0:49:380:49:40

My life changed within three seconds.

0:49:450:49:48

One minute I'm able-bodied

0:49:490:49:50

and the next minute I'm on the floor with a broken back

0:49:500:49:53

and can't walk.

0:49:530:49:55

From here down, I'm, like, completely disabled, basically.

0:49:550:50:01

It's not until she came home that it really hit her

0:50:030:50:06

about what a life-changing thing she had.

0:50:060:50:10

I just wasn't in a good place.

0:50:100:50:12

I just was sick of being in a chair

0:50:120:50:14

and I was like, "I don't want this to be my life."

0:50:140:50:17

14 months after her accident,

0:50:180:50:20

she tried to commit suicide.

0:50:200:50:22

I'd just had enough.

0:50:240:50:25

I just wanted out, basically. I just wanted out.

0:50:250:50:29

That's the bit that breaks my heart.

0:50:310:50:34

When it's your child, you always want to put it right...

0:50:340:50:38

and I can't.

0:50:380:50:39

Three years on, Ashleigh's life is a lot brighter.

0:50:460:50:49

Things changed when she was contacted by Back-Up,

0:50:490:50:52

1:06:091:06:11

-Thank you.

-That was wonderful.

-Thank you.

1:06:111:06:14

Another excellent duet to add to the collection.

1:06:141:06:17

Quite right.

1:06:171:06:18

-Now, then, I've had an idea.

-Yeah.

1:06:181:06:20

-You and I both love telling stories.

-Yep.

-All right?

1:06:201:06:24

-Yeah.

-So, here's what I thought - we could have a story-off,

1:06:241:06:27

-a competition.

-Yeah?

-We both tell a story,

1:06:271:06:30

the audience has to vote on who tells the best one.

1:06:301:06:33

And here's how we do it. We use my random word generator.

1:06:331:06:38

-Oh!

-I'm going to hit this button,

1:06:381:06:40

-words are going to flash up on the screen.

-Yeah.

1:06:401:06:42

You hit the button, whatever word comes up,

1:06:421:06:45

we've got to tell a story related to that word.

1:06:451:06:48

-OK.

-We've no idea what the word is going to be.

1:06:481:06:51

-I'll hit it first...

-Yes.

-..then you hit it to stop it.

1:06:541:06:57

-Are you ready?

-I am.

1:06:571:06:58

May the best man win.

1:06:581:07:00

The word is shower.

1:07:051:07:06

-I'll take this one, Tom, I've got an excellent one.

-OK.

1:07:061:07:09

Mrs Brydon and I are having a new shower fitted in our home -

1:07:091:07:14

but here's the thing.

1:07:141:07:16

The fella from down the road who's doing the job -

1:07:161:07:19

-Peter Whitley, he's a lovely man.

-Oh.

1:07:191:07:21

He's retired now, but he was a plumber

1:07:211:07:23

-and a sort of interiors guy, so he can come up any time.

-I see.

1:07:231:07:26

He's coming this weekend to do it,

1:07:261:07:28

and he's taking out the old shower, and he's told us

1:07:281:07:32

-that he's going to be able to keep the glass panel and re-use that.

-Oh.

1:07:321:07:37

-So, that's knocking about £50 off our bill...

-Right.

1:07:371:07:40

..and he's said that he'll take away all the rubbish

1:07:401:07:43

-and dispose of it himself.

-OK.

1:07:431:07:45

So, this time next week we will have a new shower.

1:07:451:07:50

-Over to you.

-Is that it? OK.

1:07:501:07:53

Right...

1:07:531:07:54

I was in Caesars Palace in Las Vegas...

1:07:541:07:57

CHEERING

1:07:571:07:59

..and when I come off the stage, you know, I perspire a lot,

1:07:591:08:03

so I jump straight in the shower.

1:08:031:08:05

-AUDIENCE:

-Whoo!

1:08:051:08:07

So, I was in the shower this night, right?

1:08:071:08:10

And as I'm washing my hair with my eyes closed,

1:08:101:08:13

I hear, "Uh-huh-huh-huh... "Uh-huh-huh-huh..."

1:08:131:08:16

Was it the plumbing?

1:08:161:08:18

I thought it was the plumbing, but no.

1:08:181:08:20

And then I thought, "Wait a minute, who's this, now?"

1:08:201:08:22

So I opened my eyes and the shower head was there,

1:08:221:08:25

and the door was there, and right there was Elvis Presley,

1:08:251:08:30

-leaning over the shower door...

-CROWD CHEERS

1:08:301:08:33

..and he was singing to me in the shower.

1:08:331:08:35

-All right.

-So... Right?

-All right.

-OK.

-Is that...? That's your story.

1:08:351:08:39

-Yes, yes.

-So, two very good anecdotes.

1:08:391:08:42

Let's see which one gets the votes.

1:08:421:08:44

So, first of all, if you preferred my rather lovely story

1:08:441:08:48

about fitting in the new shower, cheer now.

1:08:481:08:50

SCATTERED CHEERS

1:08:501:08:52

Mm-hm. OK, good. And if you preferred Tom's, cheer now.

1:08:521:08:57

ENTHUSIASTIC CHEERS

1:08:571:08:59

-Well, it's 50/50, isn't it?

-It's close.

1:08:591:09:02

It's pretty.... We'll call that one a draw. Let's play again.

1:09:021:09:05

-Let's get another word.

-All right.

1:09:051:09:08

-Cat. I've got a great one. I've got a great one.

-Oh.

1:09:101:09:13

We've got a cat called Crumble. He's a little ginger tom...

1:09:131:09:15

-OK!

-..and he's a killer, Tom, he really is.

1:09:151:09:18

He brings in mice and squirrels.

1:09:181:09:20

-I mean, he's brought a parakeet in, Tom, he really has.

-Oh!

1:09:201:09:23

-So, this weekend, I'm going down to the pet store.

-OK.

1:09:231:09:27

I'm going to buy him an extra bell to put onto his collar

1:09:271:09:31

-so that he can warn the animals when they come.

-Wow.

1:09:311:09:35

And that is my story for "cat". Over to you.

1:09:351:09:40

OK, well, my first manager, Gordon Mills,

1:09:401:09:44

he had a zoo in his back garden on St George's Hill in Weybridge,

1:09:441:09:49

and he had these tigers

1:09:491:09:51

and he thought it was a good idea if I went into this tiger enclosure.

1:09:511:09:54

And the tiger would put its paws on my shoulders,

1:09:541:09:56

-and that would be a great picture.

-Sorry, we're running out of time.

1:09:561:09:59

-So Gordon said...

-I'm going to stop you there, Tom.

1:09:591:10:02

-Gordon said...

-So, let's see,

1:10:021:10:03

is it my story about Crumble and his new bell?

1:10:031:10:05

If you think it's that one, cheer now.

1:10:051:10:08

FAINT CHEERS

1:10:081:10:10

And if you preferred Tom's...

1:10:101:10:12

ENTHUSIASTIC CHEERS

1:10:121:10:14

All right, let's play again. Another word.

1:10:141:10:17

Hit the... Hit the thing.

1:10:171:10:19

-Er, doorbell. Well, our doorbell at home is a lovely doorbell.

-OK.

1:10:191:10:22

It goes throughout the house, but the electrical gubbins

1:10:221:10:25

-where you actually press it, they're hanging down.

-Oh.

1:10:251:10:28

AUDIENCE MEMBER HECKLES So, this weekend... Shut up.

1:10:281:10:30

So, this weekend, I am going to buy some duct tape,

1:10:301:10:32

-do you know what I mean?

-Yeah, duct tape, I know, yeah.

1:10:321:10:35

And I'm going to... All right, don't patronise me.

1:10:351:10:37

-All right.

-And I'm going to stick the gubbins back up.

1:10:371:10:40

-Our doorbell will be good as new.

-Wow.

-Beat that if you can.

1:10:401:10:44

OK.

1:10:451:10:47

Well, I was at my house in Bel Air, California...

1:10:471:10:51

and I was in the kitchen and my cook hadn't shown up,

1:10:511:10:54

so I was in the kitchen by myself.

1:10:541:10:57

So all of a sudden the doorbell rang,

1:10:571:10:59

and I put the camera on,

1:10:591:11:01

because we've got cameras over the gate, you see?

1:11:011:11:03

So I looked at the screen

1:11:031:11:05

and there in the screen was Michael Jackson's face.

1:11:051:11:07

-All right, let's stop there.

-So...

1:11:071:11:09

We'll go straight to the vote, we're going straight to the vote.

1:11:091:11:12

If you thought it was me... SCATTERED CHEERS

1:11:121:11:14

If you thought it was him... ENTHUSIASTIC CHEERS

1:11:141:11:17

Yeah, all right. One last one. Hit the thing, Tom.

1:11:171:11:20

Hat. Um, I've got a woolly hat, I wear it when it's cold.

1:11:211:11:24

Have you got anything for "hat"?

1:11:241:11:26

-Have I got anything for "hat"?

-Yeah.

1:11:261:11:27

I'll show you right now.

1:11:271:11:30

-You ready?

-I'm ready.

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

1:15:071:15:09

Yeah!

1:15:281:15:30

Whoo!

1:15:331:15:35

Well, the message I take from that dance is "give"

1:15:351:15:39

and here's why.

1:15:391:15:40

When Tom arrived, we really felt that our family was complete

1:15:441:15:49

and we just couldn't believe how lucky we were

1:15:491:15:52

to have two beautiful children.

1:15:521:15:55

We were the happiest family in the world.

1:15:551:15:59

From the beginning, I remember him

1:16:011:16:03

as being my little brother

1:16:031:16:05

and my little soulmate.

1:16:051:16:08

We first noticed that Thomas was becoming unwell

1:16:101:16:13

in the first few days after we'd taken him home.

1:16:131:16:16

He would regurgitate his feed and he felt very floppy to handle.

1:16:161:16:22

He would spend long hours screaming.

1:16:221:16:24

He was at his happiest when he wasn't being fed.

1:16:241:16:27

After many hospital visits,

1:16:291:16:31

Thomas was diagnosed with a rare disorder

1:16:311:16:34

called chronic intestinal pseudo-obstruction.

1:16:341:16:37

This means his gut doesn't work.

1:16:371:16:39

We had no other option but to fit a central line,

1:16:411:16:45

which sits at the top of the heart,

1:16:451:16:47

and to feed him directly into that line.

1:16:471:16:50

We were told that Thomas was now considered to have a condition

1:16:501:16:54

that was life-threatening and life-limiting,

1:16:541:16:58

and it became real to us that Thomas will not survive into adulthood.

1:16:581:17:04

To hear those words, that was the worst day of my whole life.

1:17:051:17:10

I think we just sat in the car in silence, didn't we?

1:17:101:17:13

Yeah, we didn't know what to say to each other.

1:17:131:17:16

You never expect that one day you may bury your own child.

1:17:171:17:21

With Thomas needing round-the-clock care,

1:17:261:17:29

the family were introduced to Little Harbour,

1:17:291:17:31

a safe and loving children's hospice which cares for children

1:17:311:17:36

with life-limiting illnesses.

1:17:361:17:37

Little Harbour enables us to be a normal family -

1:17:371:17:41

a normal mum, a dad, a brother and a sister.

1:17:411:17:45

It's really nice that I can spend time with Thomas

1:17:451:17:48

as a brother and sister, and do kind of normal things.

1:17:481:17:53

-..nice and messy.

-Ooh!

1:17:531:17:56

It's somewhere where you can be yourself

1:17:561:17:58

and kind of make a mess and be loud.

1:17:581:18:00

We kind of forget everything that's happening.

1:18:001:18:03

It's nice to be messy, isn't it, Tom?

1:18:031:18:05

He's here now, and it's time to make the most of it.

1:18:051:18:10

I can see you!

1:18:101:18:11

He can't talk, but he talks to me in his own little language.

1:18:121:18:18

Cheeky! Yeah, you are, aren't you?

1:18:181:18:20

Can you find Alice for me in there?

1:18:201:18:23

This is Jacqui.

1:18:231:18:24

She's a play specialist funded by Children In Need.

1:18:241:18:27

Oh, there she is!

1:18:271:18:28

Thanks to your money, she brings laughter and happiness

1:18:281:18:32

into the lives of some very poorly children.

1:18:321:18:35

Children should be having fun without the worry of medical needs

1:18:351:18:38

and visits in and out of hospital.

1:18:381:18:41

Bubbles!

1:18:411:18:43

It is a real privilege to provide some of that comfort.

1:18:431:18:47

Jacqui arranges so many lovely activities...

1:18:471:18:51

Tom's going to draw!

1:18:511:18:52

..and really helps me to open up about Thomas and his illness.

1:18:521:18:58

Very good, Tom.

1:18:581:18:59

THEY LAUGH

1:19:011:19:04

Little Harbour enables us to build precious memories with Thomas

1:19:041:19:08

and Alice together.

1:19:081:19:09

I don't know how we would cope without that support.

1:19:091:19:13

Please help by donating tonight,

1:19:161:19:18

so that special places like Little Harbour can continue to help

1:19:181:19:22

children like Thomas and his family when they really need it.

1:19:221:19:25

You can choose to donate £5 or £10.
