0:02:510:02:52

Hello. Welcome.

0:03:000:03:03

Christmas for me just has to have a good old sing along.

0:03:050:03:10

We've got the cream of British gospel talent right here.

0:03:100:03:15

It's like a giant family gathering with your dream guests

0:03:150:03:20

dropping by and everyone joining in around the piano.

0:03:200:03:24

That was the House Gospel Choir opening the proceedings in style.

0:03:240:03:29

And on the other side of the stage,

0:03:290:03:31

we've got the London Community Gospel Choir.

0:03:310:03:34

APPLAUSE

0:03:340:03:37

Don't think of it as a battle of the choirs,

0:03:370:03:41

it's more like a love-in.

0:03:410:03:43

And joining them this evening, we'll have special guests.

0:03:430:03:47

Shaun Escoffery...

0:03:470:03:49

..Katy B...

0:03:510:03:52

..and Vade.

0:03:540:03:55

I'll be chipping in a song or two later myself.

0:03:590:04:02

CHEERING

0:04:020:04:04

And right now, with a musical missive from the USA,

0:04:040:04:08

home of gospel music, over to you, Gregory.

0:04:080:04:12

Yeah, I grew up in Bakersfield, California.

0:04:160:04:19

And my mother was a minister at the local southern-style church.

0:04:190:04:24

I started singing at her knee when I was just a little child

0:04:240:04:28

and gospel music remains part of my musical DNA.

0:04:280:04:31

I'm going to do a mashup of a couple of old family favourites.

0:04:310:04:36

When Was Jesus Born and Go Tell It On The Mountain.

0:08:190:08:25

Tearing it up, Gregory Porter.

0:08:310:08:35

Now, growing up in a Pentecostal community in Wolverhampton,

0:08:390:08:45

my experience of gospel music actually

0:08:450:08:47

wasn't a million miles away from Gregory's.

0:08:470:08:50

Now, I sang with my mum at church from about age four

0:08:500:08:54

and the services on Christmas Day had full-on carols, like,

0:08:540:08:58

remixes in a gospel-style.

0:08:580:09:00

We had the old Hammond organ, we had two pianos and all

0:09:000:09:04

the Sisters had the tambourines with the ribbons on them.

0:09:040:09:08

Now, carols don't come more classic than this next one.

0:09:080:09:12

But we're all about classic with a twist tonight.

0:09:120:09:15

So, to perform it,

0:09:150:09:17

please welcome a young woman who has had number one hits

0:09:170:09:21

and MOBO nominations under her belt,

0:09:210:09:24

it's Katy B with Silent Night.

Next up, a bunch of young men who could just be Britain's answer

0:13:130:13:18

to the American a cappella gospel group Take 6.

0:13:180:13:22

They cite inspirations as diverse as Boyz II Men,

0:13:220:13:26

The Hi-Lo's and Manhattan Transfer,

0:13:260:13:30

but their roots are firmly in the songs of their Church

0:13:300:13:33

of Seventh-Day Adventist,

0:13:330:13:36

as well as a diverse African heritage,

0:13:360:13:39

pretty emblematic of the melting pot of British gospel.

0:13:390:13:43

Hailing from London, Corby, and Wolverhampton.

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:17:410:17:43

Now, the London Community Gospel Choir are a national institution.

0:17:530:17:58

When they started, more than 30 years ago,

0:17:580:18:01

Gospel music was part of a way of life

0:18:010:18:03

for our African and Caribbean communities,

0:18:030:18:06

but was not on the mainstream musical map of Britain.

0:18:060:18:09

But, since then, founder Bazil Meade has turned the LCGC

0:18:090:18:14

into an international force,

0:18:140:18:17

in demand from everyone from Madonna to me.

0:18:170:18:21

Here's a peek behind the scenes as they get ready for the show,

0:18:210:18:24

with a little help from our musical director, Ayce.

0:18:240:18:28

# O, come let us adore him

0:18:320:18:36

# O, come let us adore him... #

0:18:360:18:39

I'm in rehearsal with LCGC,

0:18:400:18:43

probably, the most notorious choir from the UK.

0:18:430:18:46

Let our voices blend and work together to achieve what

0:18:460:18:50

we've come here for tonight.

0:18:500:18:51

The Reverend Bazil Meade is the godfather of UK Gospel.

0:18:510:18:55

# Where would I be... #

0:18:550:18:57

I started the LCGC initiative

0:18:580:19:01

through a conversation with a few church choir leaders.

0:19:010:19:04

I believe it was 1982.

0:19:040:19:07

We thought it'd be good to put these units together

0:19:070:19:10

and, so, we start on the journey

0:19:100:19:11

with little knowledge of how to navigate the music industry

0:19:110:19:15

because there wasn't any Gospel infrastructure.

0:19:150:19:17

It just didn't happen, like you have in America.

0:19:170:19:20

The difference when it came to LCGC is the opportunity

0:19:200:19:24

of singing outside of our churches

0:19:240:19:27

and moving into areas that the churches wouldn't go into.

0:19:270:19:32

# I feel the fire in our bones... #

0:19:320:19:35

The London Community Gospel Choir represent something like

0:19:350:19:39

35 different denominations within one choir.

0:19:390:19:43

That was the last count.

0:19:430:19:44

It's probably more now.

0:19:440:19:47

We made the sound accessible to pop artists.

0:19:470:19:50

We've worked with people like Florence, Luther Vandross,

0:19:500:19:53

the list goes on.

0:19:530:19:55

Madonna, Chaka Khan, Puff Daddy, Mariah Carey, Blur.

0:19:550:20:00

# Come on, come on, come on Get through it... #

0:20:000:20:05

Many other artists have helped us to get recognition and so forth,

0:20:050:20:10

but nothing gives us the pleasure

0:20:100:20:12

that we derive from doing our own performances.

0:20:120:20:15

A-dore. How is it spelt?

0:20:170:20:19

There's an A at the front, right?

0:20:190:20:21

When the choir started, we all had different accidents.

0:20:210:20:24

Caribbean, Africans, white English,

0:20:240:20:26

the blend wasn't what it should be.

0:20:260:20:28

And so I started getting the choir to pronounce vowels

0:20:280:20:32

as I wanted to hear them.

0:20:320:20:34

"O, come, let us a-dore him."

0:20:340:20:36

It created a sound that was so unique to the choir.

0:20:360:20:40

Whatever emotion those lyrics make you feel, sing with that emotion.

0:20:490:20:53

You're never just singing.

0:20:530:20:54

You're always singing with a meaning and with a feeling,

0:20:540:20:57

thinking about the word you're saying, whatever it is.

0:20:570:21:00

Now, I get to sing with the LCGC.

0:21:090:21:13

I've chosen a favourite of mine by Israel Houghton.

0:21:140:21:17

He's one of those singers who, along with Andrae Crouch, Sam Cooke,

0:21:170:21:22

Mahalia Jackson, who communicate directly from their souls,

0:21:220:21:27

whether it's from the altar, or up on stage.

0:21:270:21:30

And Gospel music originated from spiritual songs in the time of slavery.

0:21:300:21:35

It springs from a well of suffering and it offers transcendence.

0:21:350:21:39

This is a song that I always turn to in times of trouble

0:21:390:21:42

and it pulls me right back up again.

0:21:420:21:45

It's called, I Am Not Forgotten.

0:21:450:21:48

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:21:490:21:51

Come on!

0:21:550:21:56

Beverley Knight!

0:25:460:25:47

When I was a child in Bakersfield, our family home,

0:25:520:25:57

a mom and eight kids,

0:25:570:26:00

it was on the wonderfully named Christmas Tree Lane so in a way,

0:26:000:26:05

it was always Christmas every day and as far as I'm concerned,

0:26:050:26:10

my musical hero, Nat King Cole is for every day, too.

0:26:100:26:15

He recorded this 19th century carol for the Magic Of Christmas

0:26:150:26:21

album in 1960.

0:26:210:26:23

Tonight, it's sung very much in their own style

0:26:230:26:26

by the House Gospel Choir - Oh Holy Night.

0:26:260:26:30

# Ooh, ooh, ooh

0:26:590:27:02

# Ooh, ooh, ooh

0:27:020:27:05

# Oh, holy night

0:27:060:27:10

# Stars brightly shine

0:27:100:27:14

# It is the night of our dear Saviour's birth

0:27:150:27:23

# Long lay the world

0:27:230:27:27

# In sin and error pining

0:27:270:27:32

# Till He appeared and the soul felt its worth

0:27:320:27:40

# A thrill of hope

0:27:410:27:45

# The weary world rejoices

0:27:450:27:49

# For yonder breaks

0:27:490:27:53

# A new and glorious morn Oh...

0:27:530:27:57

# Oh, oh, oh, fall Fall on your knees

0:27:570:28:03

-# Fall on your knees

-Oh, hear

0:28:030:28:08

# Oh, hear

0:28:080:28:09

-# The angel's voices

-Oh, no

0:28:090:28:13

-# Oh, night

-Oh, night

0:28:130:28:18

-# Divine

-Divine

0:28:180:28:21

-# Oh, night, yeah

-# Oh, night

0:28:210:28:25

# When Christ was born

0:28:250:28:27

# Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh

0:28:270:28:33

-# Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah

-Ooh, ooh, ooh

0:28:330:28:38

# Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh

0:28:380:28:42

# Truly he taught us

0:28:420:28:45

# To love one another

0:28:460:28:50

# His love, his love

0:28:500:28:54

# And His gospel is peace

0:28:540:28:59

# Chains he shall break

0:28:590:29:02

# For the slave is our brother

0:29:020:29:08

# And in his name

0:29:080:29:11

# All oppression must cease

0:29:110:29:15

# Oh, oh, oh, oh

0:29:150:29:17

# Sweet hymns of joy

0:29:170:29:20

# In grateful chorus raise we

0:29:200:29:25

# Let all within us praise his holy name

0:29:250:29:33

# Oh, oh, oh Christ Christ is the Lord

0:29:330:29:38

-# Oh, Christ is the Lord

-# Let's praise

0:29:380:29:43

Let's praise

0:29:430:29:45

-# Forever praise

-Forever praise we

0:29:450:29:49

# Oh, no

0:29:490:29:50

-# Praise, praise

-Yeah, yeah, yeah

0:29:500:29:55

-# Oh, yeah

-Oh, yeah

0:29:550:29:59

# Ooh

0:29:590:30:02

# Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh

0:30:020:30:06

# Oh-oh, oh-oh, oh...

0:30:060:30:09

# Oh-oh, oh-oh, oh, oh, oh

0:30:090:30:16

# You better praise

0:30:160:30:18

# Oh, holy night is the night when Christ was born

0:30:180:30:26

# Oh, holy night is the night when Christ was born

0:30:260:30:32

# Sing with me

0:30:320:30:34

-# Oh, holy night

-Is the night

0:30:340:30:36

-# Is the night when Christ was born

-When Christ was born

0:30:360:30:40

-# Oh, they had a celebration

-Oh, Holy night is the night

0:30:400:30:44

-# Yeah, yeah, is the night

-When Christ was born

0:30:440:30:49

-# Oh, oh, holy night

-Yeah, yeah

0:30:490:30:52

-# Say "Oh, holy,"

-Oh, holy

0:30:520:30:54

# Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah

0:30:540:30:56

-# Oh, holy

-Oh, holy

0:30:560:30:58

-# Oh, holy

-Oh, holy

0:30:580:31:00

-# Oh, holy

-Oh, holy

0:31:000:31:02

# Yeah, yeah, oh, holy night, hey!

0:31:020:31:05

# Oh, holy night is the night

0:31:050:31:08

-# When Christ was born

-When Christ was born

0:31:080:31:11

-# Oh, oh, oh, yeah

-Oh, holy night

0:31:110:31:14

# Yeah

0:31:140:31:15

# Oh, holy night is the night when Christ was born. #

0:31:150:31:20

You have one end and I have the other and we pull

0:31:280:31:31

and then the winner is the person who's got this bit...

0:31:310:31:35

OK. ..of the cracker.

0:31:350:31:38

-Yes! Ah-ha-ha!

-You got it?

0:31:380:31:40

THEY STRUGGLE

0:31:400:31:42

# Everyone's a kid at Christmas time... #

0:31:420:31:46

The question is, why does gospel and Christmas go so well together?

0:31:460:31:52

It's joyous.

0:31:520:31:53

It's music which you really can sing from the inside out.

0:31:530:31:56

It allows you to kind of let your hair down.

0:31:560:31:58

Telling that good news.

0:31:580:32:00

What better news than the birth of the baby Jesus?

0:32:000:32:04

# A holy, jolly kid at Christmas time... #

0:32:040:32:07

-Hold on tight. And you can squeeze.

-I can squeeze. OK.

0:32:070:32:11

-It's always like tug-of-war.

-OK.

0:32:110:32:13

-This is a British tradition, are you ready?

-OK, is it one, two, three?

0:32:130:32:17

-It's one, two, three, pull.

-OK. Who says one, two, three?

0:32:170:32:20

What is your favourite Christmas song?

0:32:200:32:23

-Fairytale Of New York, definitely.

-"Do You Hear What I Hear?".

0:32:230:32:26

This Christmas by Donny Hathaway.

0:32:260:32:28

Mahalia Jackson and Nat King Cole and My House.

0:32:280:32:30

# Chestnuts roasting on an open fire... #

0:32:300:32:34

A lot of jazz music and a lot of

0:32:340:32:36

a capella music is taken from Christmas standards.

0:32:360:32:40

HE SINGS

0:32:400:32:42

-You won! Oh, my God!

-OOH!

0:32:480:32:50

Describe your perfect Christmas day.

0:32:530:32:58

HE GASPS

0:32:580:33:00

-Oh, my God.

-What did Santa bring me?

-Cooking.

0:33:000:33:01

I want real sweet potatoes with some crust on it.

0:33:010:33:04

SHE LAUGHS

0:33:040:33:05

-Maybe some Guinness punch.

-Everyone passes out at about 3.30.

-Yeah!

0:33:050:33:09

Christmas is deep, you know.

0:33:090:33:12

Gather up in the living room and I want to feel like I felt

0:33:120:33:15

when I was nine years old.

0:33:150:33:17

# Doo, doo, doo, doo, doo Doo, doo, doo

0:33:340:33:38

# Doo, doo, doo, doo, doo Doo

0:33:380:33:43

# Doo, doo, doo-ooh, ooh

0:33:430:33:47

# Doo, doo, doo-ooh, ooh

0:33:470:33:55

# A ray of hope flickers in the sky

0:33:550:34:02

# A tiny star lights up way up high

0:34:040:34:12

# All across the land dawns a brand-new morn

0:34:130:34:21

# This comes to pass when a child is born

0:34:210:34:30

# A silent wish sails the seven seas

0:34:300:34:37

# The winds of change whisper in the trees

0:34:390:34:47

# And the walls of doubt crumble tossed and torn

0:34:490:34:57

# This comes to pass when a child is born

0:34:570:35:04

-# A rosy hue settles all around

-Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh

0:35:050:35:12

# You've got the feel you're on solid ground

0:35:120:35:21

# Ooh, ooh, ooh

0:35:210:35:24

# For a spell or two no-one seems forlorn

0:35:240:35:31

# This comes to pass when a child is born

0:35:310:35:40

# When a child is born

0:35:400:35:50

# A child is born

0:35:500:36:00

# This comes to pass

0:36:070:36:10

# This comes to pass

0:36:100:36:18

-# It's all a dream

-It's all a dream

0:36:180:36:22

-# An illusion now

-An illusion now

0:36:220:36:27

# It must come true

0:36:270:36:30

# Sometime soon somehow

0:36:300:36:36

# All across the land dawns a brand-new morn

0:36:360:36:43

-# This comes to pass

# Doo, doo, doo, doo, doo Doo, ooh, ohh

0:37:090:37:13

# Doo... #

0:37:380:37:42

Gregory Porter and Vade with a wonderful arranger,

0:37:540:37:59

Ken Burton on the piano!

0:37:590:38:01

Wham.

0:38:020:38:04

When I was 11 or 12, our church in Wolverhampton built and moved

0:38:050:38:10

into a bigger building next door.

0:38:100:38:12

And we got bass, we got keys, we got drums and we got guitars,

0:38:120:38:17

so the carols could really rock out after that.

0:38:170:38:20

It all takes me back there tonight with this great house band.

0:38:200:38:26

Right, get ready to raise the roof!

0:38:290:38:34

This is a real humdinger from the LCGC. Faith!

0:38:340:38:39

Come on, put your hands together.

0:38:420:38:44

From London Community Gospel Choir with soloist Annette Bowen!

0:42:590:43:05

Yes!

0:43:050:43:06

Now, we all have our special associations with Christmas.

0:43:100:43:15

Growing up in a Jamaican household,

0:43:150:43:17

for me, it's waking up to the smell of Christmas day breakfast cooking.

0:43:170:43:21

Ackee and saltfish, sausage, bacon and eggs, bammy made from cassava.

0:43:210:43:28

And overcooked veggies courtesy of my dad.

0:43:280:43:32

Speaking of Dad, I would hear him humming along to

0:43:320:43:36

Donny Hathaway, Nat King Cole, Sam Cooke, Jim Reeves

0:43:360:43:40

I don't know what is about West Indians, but they love Jim Reeves.

0:43:400:43:44

Now, Donny Hathaway released his song This Christmas

0:43:440:43:50

and performing it tonight is the singer and star of The Lion King

0:43:500:43:55

and my mate, Shaun Escoffrey.

0:43:550:43:58

But first, a look at what happened when he got together

0:44:000:44:04

with the House Gospel Choir in the run up to the show.

0:44:040:44:07

Hey!

0:44:090:44:11

# When the morning when the morning comes

0:44:110:44:13

# And the darkness strays...

0:44:130:44:15

Ladies and gentlemen, take to your seats.

0:44:150:44:16

We've got Shaun Escoffrey in the place!

0:44:160:44:19

THEY CHEER

0:44:190:44:21

We are really excited about working with Shaun Escoffrey.

0:44:230:44:26

There's a load of guys within the choir that really love his voice.

0:44:260:44:30

They mix house and gospel together which I think is just amazing.

0:44:300:44:34

Cos obviously my background is a bit of house music as well.

0:44:340:44:37

WOMAN SHOUTS

0:44:370:44:39

The founder of the choir, Natalie Maddix,

0:44:400:44:43

she was just like I want to get a bunch of people together that

0:44:430:44:46

love House music, that love gospel music and there's a rave onstage.

0:44:460:44:50

Make some noise!

0:44:500:44:52

THEY CHEER

0:44:520:44:54

House music was originally made up from gospel music with just

0:44:540:44:58

more of an up tempo beat.

0:44:580:45:00

THEY SING

0:45:000:45:01

A lot of people struggle to get up and go to church on

0:45:070:45:10

a Sunday morning, but they want to be part of that community

0:45:100:45:13

so we go to the club on Saturday night and sing to them there.

0:45:130:45:16

There's something that connects us all.

0:45:160:45:18

We have a tag line which is "we are one."

0:45:180:45:20

And I think each week we prove that.

0:45:200:45:22

Three and...

0:45:220:45:24

# Fireside is burning bright... #

0:45:240:45:27

Yeah! Help us out!

0:45:270:45:28

# We'll be carolling through the night... #

0:45:280:45:34

A lot of the singers that you hear about, you know,

0:45:340:45:36

started off in church and then kind of went off and did their own

0:45:360:45:39

thing but, you know, their route was a church thing.

0:45:390:45:42

Nat King Cole, Stevie Wonder, Donny Hathaway.

0:45:420:45:45

I remember the first time I hear his voice and it killed me.

0:45:450:45:49

I couldn't believe it.

0:45:490:45:50

#..A very special Christmas for me... #

0:45:500:45:54

Aretha Franklin, Mahalia Jackson..

0:45:540:45:58

SHE SINGS

0:45:580:45:59

...gospel music means expressing the unexpressable.

0:46:040:46:07

Trying to reach a kind of unattainable feeling or emotion.

0:46:070:46:11

Rejoicing, praise, love, family, in the form of sound.

0:46:130:46:17

That's gospel music to me.

0:46:170:46:18

Christmas brings a humanity back to us.

0:46:250:46:28

We are kind of all one,

0:46:280:46:30

and you know, our differences are not very big.

0:46:300:46:34

# Hang all the mistletoe

0:46:470:46:50

# I'm going to get to know you better

0:46:500:46:54

# This Christmas and as we trim the tree

0:46:540:46:59

# Your eyes outshine the town, they do

0:46:590:47:04

# This Christmas the firelight is blazing bright

0:47:050:47:11

We'll be carolling through the night

0:47:110:47:17

# And this Christmas, will be a very special Christmas for me

0:47:170:47:26

# And this Christmas will be a very special Christmas for me

0:47:260:47:36

-# Yeah, yeah

-Ba, ba, ba, ba, ba, ba, ba

0:47:360:47:40

-# Whoa, yeah

-Ba, ba, ba, ba, ba, ba, ba, ba

0:47:400:47:45

0:47:470:47:50

# My world is filled with cheer

0:47:500:47:52

# And you

0:47:520:47:55

# This Christmas

0:47:550:47:57

# And as I look around

0:47:570:47:59

# Your eyes outshine the town, they do

0:47:590:48:04

# This Christmas the firelight is blazing bright

0:48:040:48:12

# We'll be carolling through the night

0:48:120:48:17

# And this Christmas will be a very special Christmas for me

0:48:170:48:26

# Yeah, yeah

0:48:260:48:27

-# And this Christmas

-This Christmas

0:48:270:48:29

# Will be a very special Christmas for me

0:48:290:48:33

0:48:370:48:40

# Whoa, whoa, yeah

0:48:400:48:42

# Ba, ba, ba, ba, ba, ba, ba, ba

0:48:420:48:45

# This Christmas

0:48:550:48:57

-This Christmas, ooh

0:49:050:49:11

0:49:180:49:20

-# Will be

-A very special Christmas for me

0:49:200:49:24

# A special Christmas for you and me, this...

0:49:240:49:28

-# This Christmas will be

Shaun Escoffrey with the House Gospel Choir.

0:50:160:50:20

So Beverley and I have been circling each other all evening

0:50:200:50:25

and the moment has finally arrived when we get to sing together in

0:50:250:50:28

transatlantic harmony.

0:50:280:50:31

We're going to do a beautiful song called "Mary Did You Know?"

0:50:310:50:35

# Mmm...

0:50:450:50:49

# Mary, did you know

0:50:530:50:56

# That your baby boy would one day walk on water?

0:50:560:51:02

# Mary, did you know

0:51:020:51:04

# That your baby boy would save our sons and daughters?

0:51:040:51:11

# Did you know

0:51:110:51:13

# that your baby boy has come to make you new?

0:51:130:51:19

# This child that you delivered will soon deliver you

0:51:190:51:28

# Mary, did you know

0:51:280:51:31

# That your baby boy would give sight to a blind man?

0:51:310:51:37

# Mary did you know

0:51:370:51:39

# That your baby boy would calm the storm with His hand?

0:51:390:51:46

# Did you know

0:51:460:51:48

# That your baby boy has walked where angels trod?

0:51:480:51:55

# And when you kiss your little baby you kissed the face of God?

0:51:550:52:03

# Mary did you know...

0:52:030:52:07

# Mmm-hmm-hmm

0:52:070:52:11

# Mary, did you know...

0:52:110:52:18

-# The blind will see

-The blind will see

0:52:220:52:24

-# The deaf will hear

-The deaf will hear

0:52:240:52:26

-# The dead will live again

-Whoa

0:52:260:52:30

-# The lame will leap

-The lame will leap

0:52:300:52:33

-# The dumb will speak

-The dumb will speak

0:52:330:52:35

# The praises of the Lord

0:52:350:52:44

-# Mary...

-Mary did you know

0:52:440:52:47

# That your baby boy is Lord of all creation?

0:52:470:52:53

# Mary did you know

0:52:530:52:56

# That your baby boy would one day rule the nations

0:52:560:53:02

# Did you know that your baby boy is heaven's perfect lamb

0:53:020:53:11

# The sleeping child you're holding

0:53:110:53:16

# Is the great "I am"

0:53:160:53:25

# Great "I am"

0:53:250:53:38

-# Great...

-Great...

0:53:380:53:40

# I am

0:53:400:53:43

0:53:460:53:50

# Mary, Mary, Mary, Mary did you know?

0:53:500:53:53

# Mary

0:53:530:53:55

# Mary, did you know? #

0:53:580:54:08

Well, it's been an incredible party.

0:54:190:54:24

But it's about time for us to say goodbye.

0:54:240:54:28

It's been a great window for me into the British gospel scene.

0:54:280:54:32

If this is just a taste of what's going on here then the music

0:54:320:54:36

is in real good hands.

0:54:360:54:38

Now thank you so much for joining in the fun.

0:54:380:54:41

A very happy Gospel Christmas to all of you!

Singer and musical theatre star Beverley Knight and US jazz-soul-gospel singer Gregory Porter introduce a feast of uplifting festive music from the cream of the British gospel scene, at the church of St John at Hackney in London. It is a big Christmas singalong - gospel style!

The longstanding London Community Gospel Choir and the fresh and funky House Gospel Choir are joined by Mobo-nominated songstress Katy B, Lion King star Shaun Escoffery and vocal quintet Vadé, as well as contributions from the hosts - a transatlantic duo each with their feet firmly in gospel. Gospel classics are in the mix with traditional carols and popular songs given a gospel twist. Gregory Porter and Vadé combine on a stripped down version of the Johnny Mathis hit When A Child Is Born, Katy B brings a swinging sweetness to Silent Night, Shaun Escoffery sings his hero Donny Hathaway's This Christmas and Beverley Knight delivers a barnstorming performance of modern gospel classic I Am Not Forgotten. By the time the cast combine for a rousing finale of O Come All Ye Faithful, the place is rocking.
