First up, congratulations on such a brilliant reception of your new music.

Do you still get quite anxious before the release of new music?

-Oh, my gosh, anxious is an understatement.

-Really?

Before this release, I was a mess, actually.

I, erm...

I was away for a year-and-a-half

and I forgot about what comes with releasing an album,

and I was just really scared

that people didn't want to hear me sing again.

The reception has just been overwhelming, and it really hasn't hit me yet.

Was that time out really important for you,

sort of not to rush and just immerse yourself in that normality again?

Yeah. There's certain things that come with the job.

It just really shook my universe massively, you know,

the fame side of stuff really scared me.

And it's something that I thought I wanted

but when I got it, I realised I wanted my music to be famous,

I didn't want my personal life to be famous.

So it was so important for me to just take a year out

-and just sit in my pants and watch TV again.

-Nice!

And you know, with the release of In The Lonely Hour,

it was about me all the time, and my family and friends

must have been sick of hearing about me for three years straight.

And I just wanted to be there for them for a year-and-a-half

and be there for their ups and downs

and what they were going through, and rebuild our relationship.

Now, In The Lonely Hour could not have been a bigger hit.

Let's just read some stats out here

because this is ridiculously impressive.

Total of eight weeks at number one in the UK.

12.4 million albums sold across the world.

Three Brit awards and four Grammys.

I think it's safe to say that the album went well.

It was a massive hit. Unprecedented for a debut album.

Looking back, how did it feel to be catapulted

to that international stardom so quickly?

It was mad. It was absolutely mad. I can't explain.

I remember moments of just feeling completely out of control.

But all of my dreams came true and then, even more than that,

and I wasn't prepared for even more than that.

It still freaks me out hearing the numbers and stuff like that.

But it also makes me realise what's important to me,

and that is music, you know?

I know you do that all the time, but it must feel so good to get up there

and have that voice come out of your mouth.

It feels.... I've missed singing so much so it's amazing,

and the band are just incredible and, yeah, it's amazing.

-And that's the first single off your new album as well.

How on earth, after the success of such a huge debut album,

do you go about writing a follow-up to that?

Do you know what, I don't know.

I was trying to figure that out for a whole year and I still don't know.

I just listen to my music way too much

and I was writing the same song again and again

and it really took for me to challenge myself

and get in with some people that I wouldn't normally get in with,

when I was writing, to bring out something different.

But I made some awful songs in the last year-and-a-half. Awful ones.

-I hear that you wrote over 100 songs?

-130-something.

We've heard some of them weren't so great but what were the other ones like?

Do you sort of save songs for another album?

-Bin them.

-Gone, really?

-Gone, finished. Do you want any?!

-No, I don't...

I have this theory that for every ten songs you get one,

and that's how I work.

Every song that I write will lead on to the next.

You know, so for every Stay With Me, there was ten before that.

And there's obviously that sort of cliche thing of a difficult second album.

Do you have that in your head when you're faced with that task?

I really tried to ignore that.

That really annoys me, because the pressure is unbelievable

and we need to give people a break.

I should be going into the studio

and feel free to write what I want to write,

and I really didn't listen to that because I think if I did,

I would have written a very different album to what I wrote.

And where do you feel that pressure coming from the most?

Is it your record label? Is it knowing your fans are waiting?

Or is it just from you, and you putting yourself under that strain?

It's me. I'm really, really hard on myself.

I just want to be a better singer and a better songwriter.

That was my main thing with this album -

I just wanted to bring out something of quality

and to do something that felt organic and authentic to me.

It certainly does.

What was the sort of first moment when you thought,

I quite like singing? I'm quite good at this?

I remember being in the car and, erm...

I was about eight years old,

-and I used to just belt and sing Whitney Houston...

Chaka Khan. Any female diva tune, I was singing it,

and my mum and dad basically heard my voice and asked me

if I wanted to do singing lessons with a jazz teacher,

and I was so bad in school at everything else,

so I was just really excited at the idea

that I was actually good at something.

So I was like, yeah, go for it, and when I hit 12 years old,

..and I started listening to songwriters, I started...

I got obsessed with Corinne Bailey Rae's first album,

and I just started to really open my mind up to lyrics

and stories and being personal.

And was there sort of a moment where you thought, I can actually

do this for a career, this feels right, I'm going to give it a shot?

Yeah, do you know what? My parents were so incredible.

They made me believe that anything was possible, for my whole life,

and it...

I don't know, I never had any doubt that I could do it

and I could go into it, and they had so much belief in me.

-And at what age did you discover the vast range that you have?

-Erm...

Very young. My voice actually got a little bit higher when my, erm...

balls dropped.

What would you tell your younger self, starting out in the industry?

-Stop eating so much cheese.

I would just say, stop being so hard on yourself...

That's what I'm really trying to do right now, is just enjoy

every moment and take a deep breath and really open my eyes.

and eating really healthily.

How has that impacted your life and your career?

Well, do you know what? I was never...

Before I got my record deal, I was actually kind of this size,

but when I got my record deal, I mean, some people buy houses

-A lot of cheese and bread.

-Mm.

-And, erm...

I don't know... There was a picture that was taken of me in Australia.

Erm, I felt really, really bad after it, about myself,

and I didn't like myself and...

It's just about being healthier, you know?

And I think... On touring and stuff, it's just important for me

to stay on top of it. I mean, I'm not ridiculous, though.

I still really enjoy cheese

and loads of, erm, loads of amazing foods,

but I just have more of a balance now, which is good.

Absolutely hate it, but I'm trying to enjoy it.

-What does that involve, if you're sort of going for it?

So, for me, it was just like, "Let's just have fun.

So I was just not prepared. When they called my name...

I still haven't really thought about that moment too much,

cos it was terrifying, actually. Just overwhelming. Too much.

Just too much.

Like, I mean, one album, what you just listed, it's a

lot to handle, but that on top? It's just mad.

Again, it's taken me a long time to now be really proud of that

and happy about it, but the first...

I was just like, "Whoa."

I turned my phone off that night, which was great.

So we went out with my family and we had a beautiful party.

and realised I'd caused a bit of a social media thing.

Of course I know that I wasn't the first gay guy to win an Oscar,

I knew that,

but I forgot to say Best Male Actor, which is still true.

No gay man has won Best Male Actor, but, yeah...

I felt awful the next day. It almost ruined it a little bit for me.

But now I'm really at peace with it. I'm human, I make mistakes.
