Now, I've fond memories of Christmas in South Wales

as a boy, and my gospel journey began not just at home,

listening to music on the radio, but it also began in my local chapel.

Wow.

I haven't been in here for a long time.

The Park Chapel. Wonderful.

Phew.

The thing I remember most of all was Sunday school. 2:30pm.

And we were always reminded of it,

because the preacher would say, "Sunday school starts at 2:30pm."

We were always late.

And he used to say, "Better late than never, but better never late."

"A faithful member of this church."

Well, this is dedicated to Mrs Rogers,

who was my Sunday school teacher, and she lived next door.

So you couldn't really... HE LAUGHS

..you couldn't really get out of not coming to...

..to Sunday school, because she would always check

to make sure that I was going.

So it's lovely that this is dedicated to her.

When I was a child,

the only time that I heard singers sing in public was here.

You know, that's when we all got together and we sang.

Here, in this room, with long notes being played on the organ,

that seemed a little scary to me.

But when I heard American gospel music, it didn't seem scary.

It lifted me up. It made me feel excited.

# About the goodness of the lord... #

I was mischievous, I suppose, when I was a kid.

I was tempted many times to sing it

like I could hear black gospel singers sing.

Sister Rosetta Tharpe, I saw her.

She was singing like a rock and roll singer,

playing an electric guitar and singing gospel songs.

You know, which was even more than I had heard as a child.

Holy roller, you know? She rocked it up.

# You know it did, didn't it?

This was a big part of my upbringing.

So that's how I developed my style.

You know, my singing and projection

came from this chapel,

and then later on, clubs and pubs and dance halls, you know?

But it originally started here.

You know I'm not coming to Wales for Christmas without sampling

-something really tasty.

Now, in Caribbean households, we have black cake.

It's like a fruitcake,

-but it's really treacly and it's really heavy, and it's amazing.

-Wow.

Well, what we always had was a Christmas cake made by my mother.

Now, whilst Bev and I swap cake recipes, please take in the joyful

Cardiff is one of the most diverse places in the UK.

Migration here happened really early in this area -

we're talking about the early 1900s.

A lot of the Somalian and Caribbean sailors thought,

"This is my chance of a new life."

They also brought their worship with them.

People longed for a place that they could call, you know,

their place, a place that they could call their church.

Who's that by your mum?

The one standing.

I'm the one going like that.

LAUGHTER

-Look at those cheeks!

-Those were the good old days.

-Three sisters.

The music comes from there.

That feeling that sort of fetches out in you,

makes you want to clap and sing.

What's kept the culture in Cardiff was the church, where people

got together of different cultures and everything else.

From that footage, what you see there, that's how it started off.

The song, Redeemed, I remember that as a child.

And I remember learning to play guitar to it and, you know,

it just becomes an anchor.

A lot of our church choruses, especially back in the '60s,

were like four liners and repeated and repeated.

And you actually sense the energy lift.

You know, you just get these songs and they just say it, you know?

"I am redeemed."

Oh, how was that?!

Now, back in 1979, Bob Dylan released Slow Train Coming,

an album of songs about his new-found faith.

It was an album about belief and how to keep it.

Now, here's a song from it that really means a lot to me.

Now, Wales has always been spiritual, not just in voice,

but in words, too,

and one of our famous authors,

And I love this bit from the tale,

Always, on Christmas night, there was music.

It was very warm in that little house.

Auntie Hannah, who had got into the parsnip wine,

I've got a sweet tooth.

Christmas pudding. Definitely, without a doubt, with custard.

when you drink that.

Christmas pudding chocolate brownie.

My top tips for, like, good vocal health are always, if you can,

wrap your throat and your chest with a scarf when you're going out.

You have to watch out for too much alcohol because that's drying.
