soloists bat tolling prove they've got what it takes to become the next

:00:12.:00:16.

international opera star. They'll bring a week of drama, passion and

:00:16.:00:21.

stirring performances. But only one can become BBC Cardiff Singer of the

World 2013. 20 young opera singers from across

:00:30.:00:34.

the globe hoping to impress the judges with the performance of their

:00:35.:00:44.

lives. I'm looking forward to some amazing singers. Victory can propel

:00:44.:00:49.

the winner to international fame. The BBC Cardiff Singer of the World

Hall and the first night of BBC Cardiff Singer of the World 2013.

:01:39.:01:42.

It's a landmark year, the 30th anniversary of this great

:01:42.:01:45.

competition, that's launched brilliant careers on the

:01:45.:01:51.

international stage. We're here in the foyer. In the main hall

:01:51.:01:55.

tonight's concert is reaching its climax. Doing battle tonight are

:01:55.:02:00.

singers from South Korea, England, China, the USA and Croatia. We have

:02:00.:02:04.

highlights of all five and in about 25 minutes, we hope, we'll bring you

:02:04.:02:09.

the winner. We'll be here every night this week with a taste of all

:02:09.:02:12.

the performances straight from the stage. We'll be joined by special

:02:12.:02:18.

guests to give their expert opinion. Tonight it's a pleasure to welcome

:02:18.:02:21.

soprano Rosemary Joshua, a Cardiff girl who's appeared on some of the

:02:21.:02:27.

biggest stages in opera, including coughents garden, La Scala my lan

and the Met New York. And opera singer, broadcaster and TV advertise

singer played a part in your upbringing? Certainly has. As a

:02:48.:02:53.

student I came to the first round of the competition. It obviously has

:02:53.:02:57.

given us something to be very proud of and propelled Cardiff into the

:02:57.:03:01.

international arena. It's not your first time here? No, I've been

:03:02.:03:05.

coming for many years. Does it take to impress the judges? You have to

:03:05.:03:09.

have that voice, special voice, but more surprisingly you have to pick

:03:09.:03:15.

the right programme. Absolutely. There'll be lots more from our

:03:15.:03:20.

guests later. Now what we're all really here for, the music. The

:03:20.:03:30.
:03:30.:03:36.

first singer to take the stage this I represent South Korea. I'm very

That

:05:57.:05:58.

That was

:05:58.:05:59.

That was his

:05:59.:06:04.

Marriage of Figaro. It's one of those aria's that everybody knows. I

:06:04.:06:08.

felt more character and less about the voice. So it's one of those

:06:08.:06:13.

songs that everybody knows in the operatic world, it's like me singing

:06:13.:06:17.

Memory from Cats, I suppose. Would you forgive him, because he's going

:06:17.:06:25.

first? He was very composed, collected and confident. To start a

:06:25.:06:29.

competition is always difficult. He came out with a certain energy of -

:06:29.:06:35.

I have to pace myself. I was very impressed with that element.

:06:35.:06:39.

don't always want composed for Figaro, do you? That's the problem.

:06:39.:06:44.

It's a party piece. Maybe it should have been further in the programme.

:06:44.:06:49.

From the Far East back to the UK. Next is a singer from England. She's

length. Was that a good battle plan do you think? I think for her

:09:42.:09:46.

personally, probably. She felt she could settle into something and show

:09:46.:09:51.

all the colours and textures and dynamics of her voice. I think in

:09:51.:09:55.

the context of the competition it's difficult to pull an aria like that

:09:55.:09:59.

off without the context of the opera around it and it's repetitive. I

:09:59.:10:06.

would have liked her to sing some Mozart or Strauss. It's difficult to

:10:07.:10:13.

judge a singer in that one piece and real really feel her expressing all

:10:13.:10:16.

of the different things that she can express with that phenomenal

:10:16.:10:22.

instrument. You I wasn't sure on the skirt either. That was quite big! I

:10:22.:10:26.

can't talk. I'm wearing a yellow dress. Indeed.I can, why? Because

:10:26.:10:30.

it's my birthday. I have mentioned that? We're all up staged this

:10:30.:10:36.

evening because I'm sat in the presence of greatness. So Lord,

:10:36.:10:44.

dame... Just an MBE.Tim has won an MBE. Thank you very much. You sound

:10:44.:10:50.

like a lottery. Today is Connie's 30th birthday. I am as old as

:10:50.:10:54.

Cardiff singer. It's 30 years since this competition was launched. It's

:10:54.:11:00.

lived up to its worldwide billing as the most coveted prize in op ra.

:11:00.:11:06.

-- opera. The very first win winner went on to

:11:06.:11:12.

become a global superstar. It's where everything started. We are

:11:12.:11:22.
:11:22.:11:23.

still counting. The competition really struck gold in 1989, when

:11:23.:11:28.

Britain Tyrvfel took on the Russian. They were giants. It was a

:11:28.:11:38.
:11:38.:11:39.

remarkable ocean. -- occasion. I felt it was a moment of history.

:11:39.:11:44.

Bryn didn't leave empty handed. He won the song prize. To have those

:11:44.:11:51.

two baritones competing in '89 was sure to put Cardiff Singer on the

:11:51.:11:56.

map. As a spring board for new talent, Cardiff's reputation is

:11:56.:12:00.

unrivalled. Winning that competition was a very special moment for me. It

:12:00.:12:05.

actually changed my life. Cardiff Singer of the World launched

:12:05.:12:11.

my career. Over 30 years Cardiff has shown that there is no limit to the

:12:11.:12:16.

range of vocal talents that wonderful singers come from each

:12:16.:12:22.

corner of the globe. The latest win winner from 2011 is making a name

:12:22.:12:26.

for herself in Vienna, one of the world's greatest opera houses.

:12:26.:12:36.
:12:36.:12:36.

year, I sung from Fidelio and from La Boheme. I had a very great

:12:36.:12:46.

opportunity to sing at the Vienna ball. Cardiff is the prize. It's the

:12:46.:12:55.

one that gives you that incredible push forward. It must be incredibly

:12:55.:12:59.

inspiring for today's young singers to see what some past winners have

:12:59.:13:03.

gone on to achieve. China has already given us two of those

:13:03.:13:13.
:13:13.:13:19.

winners. Our next singer tonight is Hello. I come from China. I'm very

:13:19.:13:21.

:15:26.:15:30.

Now, tenor to tenor, what did you think, were you impressed? He has a

:15:30.:15:35.

great voice with great potential. He made the mistake of putting the

:15:35.:15:41.

wrong aria at front. Mozart at the front. He pushed hard. Then the

:15:41.:15:46.

hardest task of singing nine top Cs and he failed on a few. He did well

:15:46.:15:50.

to come back and sing. But you could hear he was tired by that point.

:15:50.:15:54.

would a sing deer that? Why put yourself in that position of singing

:15:54.:15:58.

nine top Cs when the pressure is really on? If it works you win the

:15:58.:16:02.

competition. If you sing, he should have started with that. Then he

:16:02.:16:07.

would have got nine top Cs because he would have been fresh and felt

:16:07.:16:11.

strong. Maybe he's tired because he's about to be a dad. All that

:16:11.:16:18.

excitement? That might be keeping him awake. If he's tired now!

:16:18.:16:21.

heard highlights from three of tonight's singers. If you want to

:16:21.:16:25.

see a longer version of tonight's concert, tune into BBC Four at 7.

30pm tomorrow night. Can you follow the competition on Radio 3, Radio

:16:29.:16:36.

Wales, Radio Cymru and on our website, bbc.co.uk/Cardiffsinger.

:16:46.:16:51.

I'm representing the United States of America. I just want to say thank

you to Wales and to Cardiff for welcoming me with open arms. Thank

# Venez tous, c'est une fete! SHE SINGS IN FRENCH

:19:04.:19:08.

You were enjoying that. Do you think Jayme might follow in the other

:19:08.:19:13.

American winner? It's highly likely. It was a magnificent performance.

:19:13.:19:17.

She has a really international voice. Fantastic musicianship behind

:19:17.:19:24.

the voice. Incredible detail in the programme. I think she's phenomenal.

:19:24.:19:29.

For a mezzo to be knocking out the top C. It's really hard to sing that

:19:29.:19:33.

high. She had real quality throughout the range, from the very

:19:33.:19:37.

o bottom to the top. When she came on stage, even in the rehearsal this

:19:37.:19:42.

afternoon, you knew she was confident. She meant business.

:19:42.:19:46.

included Elgar, a very different vocal quality. How was that?

:19:46.:19:52.

Fantastic. I would love to hear her sing Handel, for instance. She has a

:19:52.:19:57.

transparent voice. She's very flexible with it. It's an enormous

:19:57.:20:01.

instrument. She can do anything with it. She really pulled it out of the

:20:01.:20:06.

bag tonight? She did. I saw her in make up before she went on, and she

:20:06.:20:12.

was calm, relaxed. I'd have been in bits! Salutesly. The last singer on

:20:12.:20:16.

stage tonight is one of the youngest in the competition at just 25 years

:20:16.:20:20.

old. He's a bass baritone from crow old. He's a bass baritone from crow

:20:44.:22:23.

round one of this year's competition to a close. I'm delighted to say

:22:23.:22:27.

that we're joined by David Poutney, the chief executive and artistic

:22:27.:22:31.

director of Welsh National Opera. David, you've heard all five

:22:31.:22:36.

performances there. What was the atmosphere like in the hall? Very

:22:36.:22:39.

excited of course and each person that comes on has something

:22:39.:22:43.

different to offer. You find yourself rooting for them and when

:22:43.:22:47.

they go off the rails or something like that, it's pretty agonising.

:22:47.:22:52.

What really connected with the audience? Well, there's no question

:22:52.:22:57.

Jayme Bar-to-n is in a league of her own amongst those five wonderful

:22:57.:23:02.

people. She has such assurance, such brilliance across the range as you

:23:02.:23:10.

said just now. That's a major talent. Let's discuss Marco. How did

:23:10.:23:17.

he rate? One of the jobs of a young singer, and it's a big test is to

:23:17.:23:24.

know yourself and that means that you have to make the right choices.

:23:24.:23:27.

And coming to this competition from where he comes from and singing a

:23:27.:23:33.

Handel aria was just a piece of cultural misunderstanding. Wow.

:23:33.:23:37.

a difficult one to get the balance right. You're always on a look out

:23:37.:23:42.

for talent. How did tonight rate? Due find a star of the future?

:23:42.:23:46.

lady who won this evening is definitely going to make a fabulous

:23:46.:23:53.

career. Don't give too much away. How exciting! Who is it that you

:23:53.:23:58.

think is going to be the winner tonight, do you agree with David?

:23:58.:24:04.

Absolutely. Jayme Barton was in a league of her own. She outshone the

:24:04.:24:06.

competition by a long way. Fabulous. That's who we think should win here.

:24:07.:24:12.

But it's the judge's vote that really counts. You can tell from the

:24:12.:24:19.

buzz around the foyer, that we do have a result. But because it's very

:24:19.:24:25.

close to the nail tonight. Oh, I do... We have the winner! Here's the

:24:25.:24:33.

result. Here's Nicholas Payne. winner of this first concert is

:24:33.:24:35.

Jamie Barton. Jamie Barton.

:24:35.:24:45.
:24:45.:24:59.

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE There you can see a very happy Jamie

:24:59.:25:03.

there. She's accepting the applause as the winner of the first round of

:25:03.:25:10.

this year's Cardiff Singer of the World. That was just a few minutes

:25:10.:25:17.

ago and we're delighted now to welcome Jamie Barton from the USA

:25:17.:25:21.

beaming here, the winner of round one of BBC Cardiff Singer of the

:25:21.:25:28.

World 2013. Congratulations. How do you feel? Ecstatic. Overwhelmed. At

:25:28.:25:33.

a loss of words. Did you find the audience was warm and welcoming

:25:33.:25:38.

tonight? Incredibly so. It's been the same the whole time I've been

:25:38.:25:46.

here. Wales, I love you. You're saying very good things now.

:25:46.:25:49.

seem so composed earlier, in the make up room and back stage and when

:25:50.:25:53.

you stepped onto the stage you flourished, did you enjoy the

:25:53.:25:56.

performance tonight? Absolutely. I got to sing some of my favourite

:25:56.:26:02.

music, in front of a crowd that was loving and then there's this.

:26:02.:26:06.

let you into a secret, our panel here also picked you as the winner

:26:06.:26:14.

thisthis evening. !Congratulations. Thank you very much. A big week for

:26:14.:26:17.

you. It's a lot of pressure on Cardiff Singer of the World. Are you

:26:18.:26:21.

enjoying the experience? Yeah, yeah. The staff who are here have done

:26:21.:26:25.

amazing things to make us comfortable, to make us feel taken

:26:25.:26:31.

care of. Yeah, I think the week's about to go at a rush from here on

:26:31.:26:35.

out. We understand you're a bit of a Doctor Who and torch wood fan?

:26:35.:26:39.

Really big fan. Have you been to the Doctor Who experience yet? Oh, yes.

:26:39.:26:45.

I even went over to Mermaid quay and looked at the Torchwood locations.

:26:45.:26:48.

Terrible. Keeping it real. Brilliant. Fantastic. You're a fan

:26:48.:26:52.

and we're a fan of you. Congratulations tonight. That's it

:26:52.:26:56.

for tonight. I can't believe round one is already over. Congratulations

:26:56.:27:02.

to our winner once again. Many thanks to our special guests,
