Tonight, something very special, as we welcome the National youth Jazz Orchestra to the BBC Proms

0:00:020:00:06

with a programme which spans the decades,

0:00:060:00:08

from classics by Duke Ellington to brand-new BBC Proms commissions.

0:00:080:00:13

NYJO, as it's known,

0:00:130:00:14

was founded in 1965 and has been a real springboard in the careers

0:00:140:00:18

of some great British jazz musicians, including the trumpeter Guy Barker

0:00:180:00:22

and the much missed singer-songwriter Amy Whitehouse.

0:00:220:00:26

So tonight, on this stage,

0:00:260:00:28

a new generation of young British jazz musicians.

0:00:280:00:31

The Royal Albert Hall is rapidly filling up,

0:00:310:00:34

the lights are low, veteran jazzers alongside the regular crowd,

0:00:340:00:38

as we welcome NYJO to the BBC Proms.

0:00:380:00:42

Well, the National youth Jazz Orchestra really are

0:01:090:01:12

one of this nation's great musical ensembles.

0:01:120:01:15

They're going to be on stage in a couple of minutes' time.

0:01:150:01:18

First of all, in the green room at the Royal Albert Hall,

0:01:180:01:21

I'm thrilled to be joined by two members of the current line-up,

0:01:210:01:24

Rob Luft, who plays guitar, and Anna Drysdale, who plays horn.

0:01:240:01:28

Rob, what do you get out of being a member of NYJO?

0:01:280:01:31

Well, I've been a member of the band for a number of years now

0:01:310:01:33

and I've gained so much from the musical director,

0:01:330:01:37

Mark Armstrong, who has really helped me as a soloist

0:01:370:01:40

as well as developing several areas of my personal musicianship.

0:01:400:01:43

-You were the baby of the band for a long time.

-Yes, I was.

0:01:430:01:46

I've been in the band for nearly three years now and I'm only 18, so

0:01:460:01:49

I've received quite a lot of hassle since I first joined the band, yeah.

0:01:490:01:53

Anna, we're getting a great range of repertoire spanning, you know, 60 years of jazz tonight.

0:01:530:01:59

Exactly. We're opening up with Duke Ellington's Rockin' In Rhythm

0:01:590:02:03

and sort of we go all the way through

0:02:030:02:08

to compositions by existing band members

0:02:080:02:10

and also an amazing new commission from Tim Garland, which is really, really exciting.

0:02:100:02:17

We're also doing that new commission with a drummer called Mark Mondesir,

0:02:170:02:21

who is...just a fantastic player, so interesting, so expressive and great fun to play with.

0:02:210:02:26

I think we're all really looking forward to that.

0:02:260:02:29

So here's NYJO back at the Proms,

0:02:290:02:31

performing in the great space that is the Royal Albert Hall.

0:02:310:02:34

-What's it going to be like?

-Well, historically it's obviously very exciting.

0:02:340:02:39

There's, you know, a huge number of concerts

0:02:390:02:42

which I've seen on television since I was very young.

0:02:420:02:45

I've always followed the Proms every summer on television.

0:02:450:02:48

-It's very exciting to be a part of that this year.

-Anna?

0:02:480:02:51

It's always just a huge audience, an electrifying atmosphere.

0:02:510:02:55

I go quite often as an audience member and it's exciting enough then.

0:02:550:03:02

Going as a performer, I can only assume, is going to top that.

0:03:020:03:06

Well, that audience is crying out for you, so we should let you go.

0:03:060:03:09

Thank you both very much indeed.

0:03:090:03:11

We're going to hand over now to the man who's going to run things on stage,

0:03:110:03:15

the music director of NYJO, himself a former trumpet player in the ensemble.

0:03:150:03:19

He's going to be introducing the programme, and the soloists as well, as well as conducting.

0:03:190:03:24

Thank you. Well, it's a great honour to be playing at the Proms.

0:09:400:09:44

Duke Ellington once said,

0:09:440:09:46

"There are two kinds of music, good music...and the other kind."

0:09:460:09:50

Tonight we want to present to you some of the variety within jazz

0:09:500:09:53

that I think he's hinting at.

0:09:530:09:55

You just heard Ellington's 1960s arrangement of Rockin' In Rhythm.

0:09:550:10:00

Next we play two more modern pieces, made in Great Britain

0:10:000:10:03

by composers who add some European flavour to the music.

0:10:030:10:06

We hope you enjoy Know Where You Are,

0:10:060:10:08

from Kenny Wheeler's fantastic Sweet Time Suite.

0:10:080:10:11

But first, Hush by Nikki Iles, commissioned by NYJO

0:10:110:10:15

for our 45th-anniversary appearance at Ronnie Scott's.

OK, we're going to go back to New York now, shortly to play another 1960s classic

0:24:370:24:42

from the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Big Band of Jerome Richardson's The Groove Merchant.

0:24:420:24:47

We're going to hear from a number of our soloists in that piece as well as the whole of the sax section,

0:24:470:24:52

but first we celebrate and commemorate bebop legend Thelonious Monk,

0:24:520:24:56

in the 30th anniversary of his passing, with a new arrangement of Round Midnight.

0:37:100:37:12

Thank you. NYJO has always been a stepping stone into professional jazz and commercial music for our players,

0:37:130:37:19

but we also have a huge library of original compositions

0:37:190:37:22

and arrangements written by band members.

0:37:220:37:24

The next three pieces represent this important part of our work,

0:37:240:37:27

as well as being really great.

0:37:270:37:29

Callum Au's take on another Ellington favourite features Phil Meadows

0:37:290:37:32

on alto sax and our percussion section, Scott Chapman on drums,

0:37:320:37:37

and Felix Higginbottom on everything else...!

0:37:370:37:40

And you're going to hear from Scott again

0:37:400:37:43

in NYJO alumnus Tom Stone's Return Flight,

0:37:430:37:46

as well as Tom Dennis on flugelhorn and Riley Stone-Lonergan on tenor sax.

0:37:460:37:50

But first, our baritone saxophonist Chris Whiter -

0:37:500:37:53

CHEERING ..there he is, with fans in -

0:37:530:37:57

takes us on a journey from the jungle to the city,

0:37:570:37:59

also symbolising how this band has evolved over the last few years,

0:37:590:38:03

in his composition, The Change.

1:02:351:02:40

Tim Garland previously wrote a piece for us

1:02:401:02:43

for our 45th-anniversary appearance at Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club.

1:02:431:02:46

We're delighted to welcome Tim to the stage as well as Mark Mondesir on drums.
