Welcome to the Royal Albert Hall. Shortly we will be having a live performance here, which will be

0:00:020:00:05

unique and I hope extraordinary, of southern soul music.

0:00:050:00:08

We celebrate the music of Stax Records,

0:00:080:00:10

with the help of some of their greatest surviving artists

0:00:100:00:13

and some wonderful British artists who are fans of that music.

0:00:130:00:16

They'll be backed and accompanied by myself

0:00:160:00:18

and the Rhythm & Blues Orchestra.

0:00:180:00:20

Welcome to the BBC Proms.

0:00:200:00:22

One, two, three, four.

MUSIC: Knock On Wood by Eddie Floyd

0:00:460:00:49

# Knock, knock on wood... #

0:00:540:00:57

Stax was one of the main portals for the entrance of soul music

0:00:570:01:03

into the American scene.

0:01:030:01:05

There's gospel in there, there's pop

0:01:050:01:08

and a little bit from jazz.

0:01:080:01:09

We would take downhome blues and turn it into dance music.

0:01:090:01:12

Give it up, even if it was a slow tune,

0:01:120:01:15

you'd want to dance to it. It was that kind of thing.

0:01:150:01:17

# Hold on

0:01:170:01:19

# I'm coming

0:01:190:01:21

# Hold on... #

0:01:210:01:23

We were a black and white staff, black and white creators.

0:01:230:01:27

So that merging of the influences and our backgrounds

0:01:270:01:33

was one of the major things that made the music of Stax what it was.

0:01:330:01:38

It's one of the first times in music where black and white musicians

0:01:400:01:44

mixed together, and it broke down racial barriers at the time.

0:01:440:01:48

# Have I told you lately that I love you... #

0:01:480:01:54

We knew that we were doing good music,

0:01:540:01:56

but we had no idea that it would go worldwide.

0:01:560:02:00

1967, we got the tour together to come to the UK.

0:02:030:02:08

Called it the Stax/Volt Tour.

0:02:100:02:12

They were very surprised about the reception that they had.

0:02:120:02:16

I mean, they went crazy for what we were doing.

0:02:160:02:20

And, actually, we weren't doing anything, we were just singing.

0:02:200:02:23

We were singing as hard as we could.

0:02:230:02:26

# Soul man... #

0:02:260:02:28

They knew our music, they were listening to our records,

0:02:280:02:30

they were being played by radio stations.

0:02:300:02:32

So we came into what became sort of a home for us for many years,

0:02:320:02:37

even to this day.

0:02:370:02:39

# I can't stand up... #

0:02:420:02:44

Well, doing what we're doing here is a celebration,

0:02:440:02:47

to do it at the Royal Albert Hall is pretty special.

0:02:470:02:50

If I hadn't been asked to do it I would have been very annoyed.

0:02:500:02:53

I love this music and I've recorded quite a lot of it myself.

0:02:530:02:56

I'm thrilled to be a part of it.

0:02:560:02:59

To celebrate the anniversary of Stax, amazing.

0:02:590:03:03

Ladies and gentlemen, Jools Holland.

# Of a man

0:11:340:11:36

# Well

0:12:390:12:40

0:12:420:12:45

# And I've roomed with fear

0:12:460:12:50

Yes, you have

0:12:500:12:51

# I've dealt with despair

0:12:510:12:55

# And I've wrestled with tears

0:12:550:12:59

# I can't stand up for falling down

0:12:590:13:09

# I can't stand up for falling down

0:13:090:13:18

# The vow we made

0:13:200:13:24

# You just

0:13:240:13:25

# You just broke it in two

0:13:250:13:27

# But you see, buddy

0:13:270:13:30

# That didn't stop you and I from lovin'

0:13:300:13:33

0:15:280:15:31

You say it.

0:15:310:15:32

Listen.

0:15:470:15:50

# I was brought up on a side street

0:15:500:15:55

# I learned how to love before I could eat

0:15:550:15:59

# I was educated at Woodstock

0:15:590:16:02

# When I start lovin' oh, I can't stop

# Since I've been gone

0:28:010:28:04

# You've had your number changed

0:28:040:28:08

# But my love for you, girl

0:28:110:28:14

# Still remains the same

0:28:140:28:18

# Now I've been loving you

0:28:200:28:24

# I'm sorry you couldn't call me

0:29:010:29:05

# When you got home

# But other fellas kept on calling

0:29:110:29:15

# While you were gone

0:29:150:29:19

# So I had the number changed

0:29:200:29:25

# But I, I'm not acting strange

0:29:250:29:30

# Welcome home

0:29:300:29:34

# You can have my private number

0:29:450:29:49

# Oh, yes

0:29:490:29:51

# Ohhh, I'm glad I've got your private number

0:30:240:30:29

# I know you are now

0:30:290:30:31

# Baby, baby, baby

0:30:310:30:34

# Yeah-yeah-yeah-yeah

0:30:340:30:36

0:36:540:36:56

In a short time, we have, in this show,

0:36:560:36:59

we'll be having a bit more of Eddie in a while, but now we welcome

0:36:590:37:03

a British artist who has an extraordinary and wonderful voice.

0:37:030:37:07

He's going to give us a song that Otis did.

0:37:070:37:09

We'd like to welcome to this stage now Mr James Morrison.

0:37:090:37:15

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:37:150:37:18

# Ohhh, she may be weary

0:37:320:37:36

# And young girls, they do get weary

0:37:370:37:40

# Wearing that same old shaggy dress, yeah-yeah

0:37:420:37:49

# But when she gets weary

0:37:510:37:55

# Try a little tenderness, yeah-yeah

0:37:560:38:02

# Oh, nah-nah-nah

0:38:050:38:07

# Ohhh

0:38:080:38:10

# You know she's waiting

0:38:100:38:14

# Just anticipating

0:38:140:38:18

# The things that she'll never

0:38:180:38:22

# Never, never, never possess, yeah-yeah-yeah

0:38:220:38:27

# But while she's there waiting

0:38:270:38:31

# Oh, try a little tenderness

0:38:330:38:38

# That's all you've got to do

0:38:400:38:41

# It's not just sentimental, no-no-no

0:38:460:38:53

# She has her grief and care, yeah-yeah-yeah

0:38:550:39:01

# But the soft words

0:39:030:39:06

# They are spoke so gentle, yeah

0:39:060:39:10

# It makes it easier

0:39:120:39:15

# Easier to bear

0:39:150:39:20

# You won't regret it, no-no

0:39:200:39:24

# Young girls, they don't forget it

0:39:250:39:27

# Love is their whole happiness

0:39:280:39:34

# But it's all so easy

0:39:380:39:42

# All you got to do

0:39:420:39:44

# Is try a little tenderness

0:39:440:39:48

# Yeah, tenderness

0:39:480:39:52

# Got to

0:39:520:39:53

# You've got to hold her, squeeze her

0:39:530:39:56

# Never leave her

0:39:560:39:59

# You got to try, try, try

0:39:590:40:01

# You've got to try a little tenderness

0:40:010:40:04

# A little tenderness

0:40:040:40:06

# You've got, you've got to make that woman know you love her

0:40:060:40:11

# You've got to hold her, squeeze her

0:40:110:40:14

# Never leave her

0:40:140:40:16

# Got to, nah-nah-nah-nah-nah

0:40:160:40:18

# You've got to try a little tenderness

0:40:180:40:21

# A little tenderness

0:40:210:40:24

# You've got to

0:40:240:40:25

# You've got to take my advice

0:40:250:40:28

# You've got to hold her, squeeze her

0:40:280:40:31

# Never leave her

0:40:310:40:33

# You've got to try-try-try-try-try-try

0:40:330:40:36

# Try a little tenderness

0:40:360:40:38

# Tenderness

0:40:380:40:41

# Come on, have mercy on the woman you love

0:40:410:40:44

# You've got to hold her and squeeze her

0:40:440:40:48

# Never leave her

0:40:480:40:50

# You've got to take my advice

0:40:500:40:52

# And try a little tenderness

0:40:520:40:56

# Tenderness

0:40:560:40:58

# That's all you really need

0:40:580:41:01

# You've got to hold her, squeeze her

0:41:010:41:05

# Never leave her

0:41:050:41:07

# Ahhhh

0:41:070:41:09

# You've got to try

0:41:090:41:10

# Yeahhhh

0:41:100:41:13

# Tenderness

0:41:130:41:17

# You've got to hold her, squeeze her

0:41:170:41:21

# Never leave her

0:41:210:41:23

# You've got to try-try-try

0:41:230:41:25

# Yeahhhhhh. #

0:41:410:41:45

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:41:450:41:49

The amazing voice of James Morrison.

0:41:500:41:53

OK, ladies and gentlemen, now we're going to enjoy -

0:41:550:41:57

I certainly am - one of the most famous instrumentals

0:41:570:42:01

of all time, written by this man here.

0:42:010:42:05

It's a piece of music that I can frequently be found dancing to

0:42:050:42:10

in private moments at home and maybe the viewers at home

0:42:100:42:13

would like to have a little private dance or you might like to, too.

0:42:130:42:16

I'm so delighted that we have playing, as he played

0:42:160:42:18

on the original, we've got Steve Cropper and we welcome,

0:42:180:42:23

with Green Onions, Booker T!

0:42:230:42:26

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:45:390:45:41

And I think maybe a round of applause for a group of people

0:45:430:45:47

that are enjoying themselves a great deal this evening -

0:45:470:45:50

the Rhythm & Blues Orchestra, ladies and gentlemen!

0:45:500:45:52

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE A bit of love in there this evening.

0:45:520:45:55

And, of course,

0:45:570:45:58

the Rhythm & Blues Orchestra would not be complete

0:45:580:46:01

without one very special person indeed

0:46:010:46:04

so please welcome onto this stage,

0:46:040:46:07

the one and only Ruby Turner.

0:46:070:46:10

-Thank you.

-CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:49:570:50:00

Thank you, everyone.

0:50:000:50:02

The wonderful Ruby Turner.

0:50:040:50:06

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE Our very own wonderful Ruby Turner.

0:50:060:50:09

With a Staples vibe there.

0:50:110:50:13

All right, so Stax had some amazing songs

0:50:130:50:15

and this next song is maybe one of the...

0:50:150:50:17

Well, it's maybe one of the greatest songs of the 20th century

0:50:170:50:20

and the man that wrote it with Otis Redding

0:50:200:50:24

is this man here, Mr Steve Cropper.

0:50:240:50:26

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:50:260:50:30

So, we'd like to have a fantastic and a unique,

0:50:300:50:33

a completely unique version of this,

0:50:330:50:36

a quiet and small, beautiful version

0:50:360:50:38

so I'd like you to welcome now to the stage

0:50:380:50:41

while the two of them perform this,

0:50:410:50:43

the wonderful Sir Tom Jones.

0:50:430:50:46

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:50:460:50:48

# Sittin' in the mornin' sun

0:51:080:51:11

# I'll be sittin' when the evenin' comes

0:51:130:51:16

# Watching the ships roll in

0:51:180:51:21

# Then I watch 'em roll away again

0:51:230:51:26

# Sittin' on the dock of a bay

0:51:280:51:32

# Watching the tide roll away

0:51:320:51:36

# Sittin' on the dock of a bay

0:51:380:51:42

# Wastin' time

0:51:420:51:44

# I left my home in Georgia

0:51:470:51:51

# Headed for the 'Frisco bay

0:51:520:51:55

# I had nothing to live for

0:51:570:52:01

# Look like nothin's gonna come my way

0:52:010:52:05

# Sittin' on the dock of a bay

0:52:070:52:11

# Watching the tide roll away

0:52:110:52:14

# Sittin' on the dock of a bay

0:52:160:52:20

# Wastin' time

0:52:200:52:22

# Look like nothing's gonna change

0:52:270:52:31

# Every little thing still remains the same

0:52:320:52:36

# I can't do what ten people want me to do

0:52:370:52:40

# So I guess I'll remain the same

0:52:410:52:46

# Sittin' here resting my bones

0:52:460:52:49

# And the loneliness won't leave me alone

0:52:500:52:54

# Two thousand miles I roamed

0:52:550:52:59

# Just to make this dock my home

0:52:590:53:04

# Listen to me Sittin' on the dock of a bay

0:53:040:53:09

# Watching the tide roll away

0:53:090:53:13

# Sittin' on the dock of a bay

0:53:150:53:19

# Wastin' time

0:53:190:53:22

# Wastin' time

0:53:240:53:26

# Wastin' time

0:53:280:53:30

# I'm just wastin' time

0:53:320:53:35

# Wastin' time Yeah. #

0:53:380:53:42

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:53:420:53:44

Steve Cropper. And Booker T over there.

0:53:440:53:48

Extraordinary. Sir Tom Jones.

0:53:510:53:54

Steve Cropper.

0:53:560:53:58

Also, on the organ, Booker T.

0:54:020:54:05

And Booker T Jones, he's now going to perform,

0:54:050:54:08

he played beautifully there,

0:54:080:54:10

a Duke Ellington's piece called Blues For New Orleans.

0:54:100:54:13

Now, why would be having a Duke Ellington piece here?

0:54:130:54:16

Well, it's really because this, when we were talking a while ago,

0:54:160:54:21

we discovered, I discovered, that Booker T, when he'd been

0:54:210:54:26

13 years old, there in Memphis,

0:54:260:54:27

Duke Ellington Orchestra come through town.

0:54:270:54:30

Duke Ellington needs an organ player to go on tour with him.

0:54:300:54:33

So word goes out. He's heard how brilliant this young boy is.

0:54:330:54:36

"Can you come with me on tour?" He thinks, "Great."

0:54:360:54:39

His mum says, "On tour with a jazz orchestra at 13?

0:54:390:54:42

"You're having a laugh. Course not."

0:54:420:54:45

He was never allowed to go.

0:54:450:54:47

Had he have been, this is what he would have done.

0:54:470:54:50

So at last that dream has come true. For him, and for me.

0:54:500:54:52
