Hello, and welcome to the opening concert of Celtic Connections 2017. | 0:00:02 | 0:00:06
Celtic Connections is the biggest winter music festival in the world, | 0:00:06 | 0:00:09
and it was launched in style with a fantastic concert | 0:00:09 | 0:00:13
featuring the award-winning singer-songwriter Laura Marling. | 0:00:13 | 0:00:16
This performance marks her Celtic Connections debut, | 0:00:16 | 0:00:19
and for her first outing, | 0:00:19 | 0:00:21
she was joined by the acclaimed BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra. | 0:00:21 | 0:00:24
We'll be bringing you highlights from that set | 0:00:34 | 0:00:36
as well as performances from Cara Dillon... | 0:00:36 | 0:00:39
..Adam Holmes and Rachel Sermanni... | 0:00:40 | 0:00:42
..Lindsay Lou & The Flatbellys... | 0:00:43 | 0:00:45
..Declan O'Rourke... | 0:00:46 | 0:00:47
..and Aziza Brahim. | 0:00:49 | 0:00:50
But first, here is Karine Polwart | 0:00:52 | 0:00:53
with a piece composed specially for the event. | 0:00:53 | 0:00:56
She was accompanied by the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra | 0:00:56 | 0:00:59
conducted by Jules Buckley and led by Kanako Ito. | 0:00:59 | 0:01:02
On May 11th, 1930, a young woman called Mary Anne MacLeod | 0:01:09 | 0:01:13
from Tong on the Isle of Lewis stepped aboard the RMS Transylvania | 0:01:13 | 0:01:18
from Glasgow to New York City in search of a better life. | 0:01:18 | 0:01:21
There, she met Frederick, | 0:01:23 | 0:01:25
whose father had emigrated to America from Germany | 0:01:25 | 0:01:28
as a 16-year-old boy, | 0:01:28 | 0:01:30
and together Mary Anne and Frederick raised five children. | 0:01:30 | 0:01:33
Mary Anne's middle son would return to Scotland years later, | 0:01:35 | 0:01:40
the home of his MacLeod ancestors, | 0:01:40 | 0:01:42
whose clan motto is, "I burn but I am not consumed." | 0:01:42 | 0:01:47
And here, in the name of progress and profit, and executive golf, | 0:01:47 | 0:01:53
he would pit himself against time and tide. | 0:01:53 | 0:01:57
And in his wake, the shifting dunes of Balmedie in Aberdeenshire | 0:01:57 | 0:02:00
would never be the same. | 0:02:00 | 0:02:01
The marbled metamorphic rock of Lewis | 0:02:03 | 0:02:05
is two thirds the age of Earth, | 0:02:05 | 0:02:07
amongst the oldest on our planet. | 0:02:07 | 0:02:10
It knows about power and it's seen a lot. | 0:02:10 | 0:02:13
And so I wondered, | 0:02:13 | 0:02:15
what might it have to say about the inauguration tomorrow | 0:02:15 | 0:02:18
in Washington DC | 0:02:18 | 0:02:19
of the 45th President of the United States of America, | 0:02:19 | 0:02:23
Mary Anne MacLeod's middle son Donald? | 0:02:23 | 0:02:26
And this is what the rock told me. | 0:02:26 | 0:02:30
Oh son of Lewis, lonely boy, | 0:02:43 | 0:02:46
hewn from granite, salt and sky | 0:02:46 | 0:02:48
upon a foreign shore: | 0:02:48 | 0:02:51
the ocean is a mirror gleam | 0:02:51 | 0:02:54
in which you see yourself, | 0:02:54 | 0:02:56
and nothing more. | 0:02:56 | 0:02:57
Three billion years of gravity, | 0:03:00 | 0:03:03
of strata forged in fire and earth, | 0:03:03 | 0:03:06
the stone crib of your mother's birth, | 0:03:06 | 0:03:08
in which your forebears lie. | 0:03:08 | 0:03:10
I am alive. I am a tomb. | 0:03:12 | 0:03:15
I burn, but I am not consumed. | 0:03:15 | 0:03:17
I burn, but I am not consumed. | 0:03:17 | 0:03:20
Fish may swim at your command | 0:03:23 | 0:03:25
across The Atlantic to the land | 0:03:25 | 0:03:29
of dreams and self belief and boundless chance. | 0:03:29 | 0:03:32
An exile tale. An immigrant dance. | 0:03:32 | 0:03:35
You're captain of a frigate now, | 0:03:35 | 0:03:37
So set your compass, raise the mast, | 0:03:37 | 0:03:40
Blow up the sails, | 0:03:40 | 0:03:42
Erase the past, and future, if you must. | 0:03:42 | 0:03:45
# Together we can stand | 0:03:46 | 0:03:48
# And watch the peat-land turn to dust... # | 0:03:48 | 0:03:51
This is your apprenticeship: | 0:03:52 | 0:03:54
The Gulf Stream doesn't know your name, | 0:03:54 | 0:03:58
nor does the splendid, blazing sun | 0:03:58 | 0:04:00
that alters how the currents run. | 0:04:00 | 0:04:03
The North wind never heard you roar: | 0:04:03 | 0:04:06
You're fired! You're fired! | 0:04:06 | 0:04:09
My back might burn, the blaze run wild, | 0:04:09 | 0:04:12
but I am not consumed, my child. | 0:04:12 | 0:04:14
The Minch whips up a spindrift storm. | 0:04:16 | 0:04:18
The machair shifts. The machair moans. | 0:04:18 | 0:04:21
From Uig Bay to Luskentyre... | 0:04:21 | 0:04:23
# The gale blows fast, the tide flows higher | 0:04:23 | 0:04:26
# The shore erodes and disappears... # | 0:04:26 | 0:04:29
And, meantime, you are stoking fears | 0:04:29 | 0:04:32
and stacking hope into a pyre. | 0:04:32 | 0:04:35
You strike a match. | 0:04:35 | 0:04:36
# Oh ma bairn, mo leanaibh | 0:04:39 | 0:04:43
# Oh ma bairn, mo leanaibh | 0:04:45 | 0:04:50
# Your mother was a wee girl once | 0:04:50 | 0:04:53
# Who played upon my rocky shore | 0:04:53 | 0:04:55
# And you, you are a broken boy | 0:04:55 | 0:04:58
# And you want more and more and more | 0:04:58 | 0:05:02
# You build a tower You build a wall | 0:05:02 | 0:05:05
# You live in fear that they might fall... # | 0:05:05 | 0:05:08
You who see nothing but your face | 0:05:08 | 0:05:10
in the sheen of the Hudson River. | 0:05:10 | 0:05:12
# Oh ma bairn, mo leanaibh | 0:05:14 | 0:05:17
# Oh ma bairn, mo leanaibh... # | 0:05:20 | 0:05:24
A balancing is yet to come, | 0:05:26 | 0:05:28
although by then you may be gone | 0:05:28 | 0:05:30
and leave a desert to your sons and daughters. | 0:05:30 | 0:05:34
Still, these waters, they will rise, | 0:05:37 | 0:05:39
the North Sea haar will cover your eyes, | 0:05:39 | 0:05:42
despite your appetite for lies. | 0:05:42 | 0:05:45
And your disregard for truth. | 0:05:45 | 0:05:47
Three billion years of gravity, | 0:05:48 | 0:05:51
of strata forged in fire and earth, | 0:05:51 | 0:05:54
the stone crib of your mother's birth, | 0:05:54 | 0:05:56
in which your forebears lie. | 0:05:56 | 0:05:59
I am alive. I am a tomb. | 0:06:00 | 0:06:03
I burn, but I am not consumed. | 0:06:03 | 0:06:05
I burn, but I am not consumed. | 0:06:05 | 0:06:08
# I was Farrah Fawcett, you were Steve McQueen | 0:06:11 | 0:06:16
# And we rode your silver Grifter | 0:06:16 | 0:06:19
# Half the way from Aberdeen | 0:06:19 | 0:06:22
# And the waves | 0:06:24 | 0:06:32
# Fall | 0:06:34 | 0:06:35 | |
# How they fall | 0:06:38 | 0:06:40
# I kept lookout in the marram grass | 0:06:49 | 0:06:52
# U-boats on the skyline | 0:06:54 | 0:06:57
# Commandos at the pass | 0:06:57 | 0:06:59
# And the waves | 0:07:02 | 0:07:09
# Fall | 0:07:11 | 0:07:13 | |
# How they fall | 0:07:15 | 0:07:17
# And the tide still ebbs and flows | 0:07:20 | 0:07:22
# Where the Ythan meets the ocean | 0:07:22 | 0:07:25
# Not even God himself | 0:07:25 | 0:07:28
# Could stop the northerlies from blowing | 0:07:28 | 0:07:31
# You can tear theses dunes asunder | 0:07:31 | 0:07:34
# Pound this wonder into dust | 0:07:34 | 0:07:37
# With your cruel hands and crooked hearts | 0:07:37 | 0:07:40
# Laden with lust | 0:07:40 | 0:07:42
# And expensive lies | 0:07:42 | 0:07:44
# But the haar will stumble in | 0:07:46 | 0:07:49
# To cover your eyes | 0:07:49 | 0:07:51
# The haar will stumble in | 0:07:52 | 0:07:56
# You said Michael blew the clouds away | 0:08:04 | 0:08:08
# And a scarlet shard of sunset scores the granite grey | 0:08:08 | 0:08:14
# And the waves | 0:08:17 | 0:08:25
# Fall | 0:08:26 | 0:08:28 | |
# How they fall | 0:08:31 | 0:08:33
# And the tide still ebbs and flows | 0:08:35 | 0:08:38
# Where the Ythan meets the ocean | 0:08:38 | 0:08:41
# Not even God himself | 0:08:41 | 0:08:44
# Could stop the northerlies from blowing | 0:08:44 | 0:08:47
# The tide still ebbs and flows | 0:08:47 | 0:08:50
# Where the Ythan meets the ocean | 0:08:50 | 0:08:53
# Not even God himself | 0:08:53 | 0:08:55
# Could stop the northerlies from blowing | 0:08:55 | 0:08:58

'of his much-loved song, Galileo.' | 0:29:56 | 0:29:58
# Galileo fell in love | 0:30:18 | 0:30:25
# As a Galilean boy | 0:30:25 | 0:30:28
# And he wondered what in heaven | 0:30:28 | 0:30:32
# Who invented such a joy | 0:30:32 | 0:30:37
# But the question got the better | 0:30:37 | 0:30:41
# Of his scientific mind | 0:30:41 | 0:30:46
# And to his blind and dying gaze | 0:30:46 | 0:30:54
# He looked up high | 0:30:54 | 0:31:00
# And often sighed | 0:31:00 | 0:31:03
# And sometimes cried | 0:31:03 | 0:31:06
# Who puts the rainbow in the sky? | 0:31:06 | 0:31:13

# For I remember when | 0:31:57 | 0:32:03
# I was lonely and unhappy | 0:32:03 | 0:32:07
# And my lips were cold as ice | 0:32:07 | 0:32:13
# But you kissed me and good heavens | 0:32:13 | 0:32:17
# Now I'm here in paradise | 0:32:17 | 0:32:22
# So if ever I'm not kissing you | 0:32:22 | 0:32:27
# Or looking in your eyes | 0:32:27 | 0:32:32
# I won't be blind and I won't cry | 0:32:32 | 0:32:37

# Is where I've left me here to breathe | 0:48:42 | 0:48:46
# We must breathe | 0:48:47 | 0:48:49
# Us of constant banging | 0:49:04 | 0:49:07
# Throwing fists against the wall | 0:49:07 | 0:49:10
# Screaming at the earth | 0:49:12 | 0:49:15
# For what it's done to one and all | 0:49:15 | 0:49:19

# I'm just skin and bone | 0:54:59 | 0:55:04
# I will never love England more | 0:55:04 | 0:55:09
# Than when covered in snow | 0:55:09 | 0:55:13

# Only God knows why | 0:55:31 | 0:55:33
# And I bet you that he cracked a smile | 0:55:34 | 0:55:37
# And I'm clearing all the crap out of my room | 0:55:39 | 0:55:42
# Trying desperately to figure out what it is that makes me blue | 0:55:43 | 0:55:48
# And I wrote an epic letter to you | 0:55:48 | 0:55:52
# It's 22 pages front and back | 0:55:53 | 0:55:55
# And it's too good to be used | 0:55:55 | 0:55:58
# I have tried to be a girl who likes to be used | 0:55:58 | 0:56:02
# I'm too good for that | 0:56:02 | 0:56:05
# There's a mind under this hat | 0:56:05 | 0:56:07
# And I called my ma and told her I've got to move | 0:56:07 | 0:56:11
# I'm out, Ma | 0:56:12 | 0:56:14
# It's too hard | 0:56:14 | 0:56:15
# I'm on my own | 0:56:16 | 0:56:18
# And it's too hard | 0:56:18 | 0:56:20
# Feel like running | 0:56:22 | 0:56:25
# Feel like running | 0:56:26 | 0:56:31
# Running off | 0:56:31 | 0:56:33
# We will keep you | 0:56:36 | 0:56:40
# We will keep you | 0:56:41 | 0:56:45
# Little one | 0:56:45 | 0:56:49
# Safe from harm | 0:56:49 | 0:56:53
# Like an extra arm, you are a part of us | 0:56:54 | 0:57:00
# You were so smart then | 0:57:03 | 0:57:06
# In your jacket and coat | 0:57:08 | 0:57:11
# My softest red scarf was... | 0:57:13 | 0:57:17
# Warming your throat | 0:57:18 | 0:57:20
# Winter will leave us | 0:57:23 | 0:57:26
# Left the end of my nose | 0:57:27 | 0:57:30
# Goodbye, old England | 0:57:32 | 0:57:36
