Gerry Rafferty Remembered Celtic Connections

Hello and welcome to the Royal Concert Hall in Glasgow

and a celebration of the music of the late and great Gerry Rafferty.

On stage tonight, a great line-up of friends, family

and former musical partners to play the songs

that made Gerry Rafferty

one of the greatest singer-songwriters of his time.

So look forward to heartfelt performances from artists

including Rab Noakes, Paul Brady, Barbara Dickson, Jack Bruce,

Ron Sexsmith and The Proclaimers.

Tonight's show, a year since his passing,

will be an emotional tribute to a man who left us

a huge musical legacy.

Born in Paisley in 1947, his early influences came from

the world of rock and pop, but he drifted into folk music,

touring the folk clubs of Britain with Billy Connelly

in The Humblebums.

He then went on to work with Joe Egan in Stealers wheel.

Major solo success followed from albums like City To City in 1978,

which included the career-defining song Baker Street.

Tragically, Gerry Rafferty died in January 2011, leaving a shocked

and saddened worldwide musical community behind him.

There's a full house in the Royal Concert Hall tonight

as we invite you to enjoy his musical legacy.

That was the opening song, Can I Have My Money Back,

the title track from Gerald's first album back in 1971.

And that album was made at a time when we were forming Stealers Wheel,

and we were all living in a house together in Sandhurst Road

in Tunbridge Wells.

And there was a very small person who was moving around the house

at that time, and that was Martha, who is with me here.

We'd like to think of this as a commemoration, yes,

but a celebration as well of the life and work of Gerry Rafferty.

Rab and Jerry and I were very good friends, Billy Connolly.

And particularly there was a hard-core of about

six or seven of us who used to travel around in Scotland

and make music together unofficially

This thing we're doing tonight,

we kind of did that in an informal way,

sitting with our backs against a wall,

sitting on the floor in people's houses,

singing in three-part harmony.

We kind of grew up on that kind of thing.

This is brilliant, being here.

I was in high school and it was this sort of period in music where

there was a lot of bad music on the radio, you know.

And then Gerry was one of...

you know, I would hear Baker Street and Right Down The Line,

and I always liked melodic music, so that appealed to me, right?

So I was curious about him

and then I didn't realise at the time that he was also

the guy from Stealers Wheel as well

and, of course, I heard that song growing up a lot, too.

But it was just one of those... I was just sort of drawn to it, you know.

Right Down The Line has always been my favourite song by Gerry Rafferty,

so that was one of the ones when they first asked me,

I was like, "I hope that's not taken."

Martha, Gerry's daughter, and I

had a discussion at Gerry's funeral, after the funeral last January.

about how we should preserve some kind of legacy,

'and the idea came around to it being something based around his songs, really,

'because the songs were what Gerry Rafferty lived for,

'that was his artwork,'

and he expressed himself greatly through songs.

And so, building a concert around his work

and inviting a number of interesting artists to come and perform them

was the order of the day.

Anybody who knew Gerry and knew his work would know

that harmony was very important to him, was very important

in the music that he made, but it was also a very important thing,

spiritually and inwardly.

And he grew up with two brothers,

Gerry's brothers were called Jim, the next one,

and then Joey was the eldest one.

And Joey and his wife Moira had five children,

and they're all here tonight to sing for you, in harmony,

with Martha. Please welcome.

I think everybody is aware of Gerry's music.

I was saying that earlier - the thing with his songs

is that everybody's aware, but people don't realise

that they're his songs.

And I was in that camp - obviously, I'm aware of Baker Street

and you know, just everybody knows certain songs,

but I... Even the fact that he was in Stealers Wheel,

I was aware of it, but you don't really think about it,

you just realise, you look at the breadth of the work and it's staggering,

the man has written some incredible songs that are indelible,

they'll be for ever.

How well do you think Gerry Rafferty will continue to be appreciated?

I think he'll be more appreciated with the distance of time.

I think if you've got songs that really survive and the quality

running through it,

I think those ones tend to be better appreciated as the years go by.

I think his work will stand the test of time.

I sang it last year at the Celtic Connections

with the Transatlantic Sessions live tour because Gerry

had just passed on a few weeks before that

and so we decided to sing it on tour

so I think they came back to me to do it again.
