APPLAUSE | 0:04:19 | 0:04:25
Well, thank you. | 0:04:25 | 0:04:28
That was the opening song, Can I Have My Money Back, | 0:04:28 | 0:04:31
the title track from Gerald's first album back in 1971. | 0:04:31 | 0:04:36
And that album was made at a time when we were forming Stealers Wheel, | 0:04:36 | 0:04:42
and we were all living in a house together in Sandhurst Road | 0:04:42 | 0:04:45
in Tunbridge Wells. | 0:04:45 | 0:04:48
And there was a very small person who was moving around the house | 0:04:48 | 0:04:51
at that time, and that was Martha, who is with me here. | 0:04:51 | 0:04:56
CHEERING AND APPLAUSE | 0:04:56 | 0:04:58
We'd like to think of this as a commemoration, yes, | 0:05:01 | 0:05:05
but a celebration as well of the life and work of Gerry Rafferty. | 0:05:05 | 0:05:09
APPLAUSE | 0:05:09 | 0:05:14
Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome to the stage The Proclaimers. | 0:05:23 | 0:05:27
CHEERING AND APPLAUSE | 0:05:27 | 0:05:31
# Oh, Mattie, open up the door | 0:06:00 | 0:06:05
# That's right, I'm home again | 0:06:05 | 0:06:08
# You've got a big surprise in store, | 0:06:08 | 0:06:12
# Turn round and count to ten | 0:06:12 | 0:06:16
# Wait till you see what I got you | 0:06:16 | 0:06:19
# Well, you'll say it's a magic thing | 0:06:19 | 0:06:22
# It's like an old mandolin man | 0:06:22 | 0:06:26
# You just wind him up And he'll start to sing | 0:06:26 | 0:06:30
# I've been away for quite a while | 0:06:30 | 0:06:34
# And I want to hear all your news | 0:06:34 | 0:06:38
# Speak to me, let me see you smile | 0:06:38 | 0:06:42
# Cos I've had those homesick blues | 0:06:42 | 0:06:45
# When I go down to the city | 0:06:45 | 0:06:49
# I just don't know wrong from right | 0:06:49 | 0:06:53
# When I get back to you, Mattie | 0:06:53 | 0:06:57
# Well, you make me see the light | 0:06:57 | 0:07:00
# Love is a singular thing | 0:07:16 | 0:07:19
# It can take you up Or bring you down | 0:07:19 | 0:07:23
# There's love in the song that I sing | 0:07:23 | 0:07:26
# So come on now, Mattie Listen to this sound | 0:07:26 | 0:07:30
# When you grow up We'll sit and talk | 0:07:30 | 0:07:35
Of how things used to be | 0:07:35 | 0:07:38
# I'll be a grand old man of rock | 0:07:38 | 0:07:42
# With all these memories | 0:07:42 | 0:07:45
CHEERING AND APPLAUSE | 0:08:33 | 0:08:35
-Thank you very much. -Thank YOU! | 0:08:35 | 0:08:39
The Proclaimers, everybody. | 0:08:39 | 0:08:40
Rab and Jerry and I were very good friends, Billy Connolly. | 0:08:40 | 0:08:45
And particularly there was a hard-core of about | 0:08:45 | 0:08:47
six or seven of us who used to travel around in Scotland | 0:08:47 | 0:08:51
and make music together unofficially | 0:08:51 | 0:08:54
This thing we're doing tonight, | 0:08:54 | 0:08:56
we kind of did that in an informal way, | 0:08:56 | 0:08:58
sitting with our backs against a wall, | 0:08:58 | 0:09:00
sitting on the floor in people's houses, | 0:09:00 | 0:09:02
singing in three-part harmony. | 0:09:02 | 0:09:04
We kind of grew up on that kind of thing. | 0:09:04 | 0:09:07
This is brilliant, being here. | 0:09:09 | 0:09:11
A roomful of Gerry Rafferty fans. | 0:09:11 | 0:09:14
CHEERING AND APPLAUSE | 0:09:14 | 0:09:16
Thank you very much. | 0:09:19 | 0:09:20
You know, I'd swap every single thing | 0:09:20 | 0:09:22
to have him sitting in the front row. | 0:09:22 | 0:09:24
APPLAUSE | 0:09:24 | 0:09:27
Thank you very much. This is a song Martha asked me | 0:09:27 | 0:09:30
if I would sing tonight. | 0:09:30 | 0:09:32
# Well, we sit in empty rooms And dream our lives away | 0:10:04 | 0:10:10
# While the spirits come and go Without a sound | 0:10:10 | 0:10:16
# And just like you and me They're tryin' to find the way | 0:10:16 | 0:10:21
# Find the way, find the way home | 0:10:21 | 0:10:27
# There's a full moon in the sky But that don't worry me | 0:10:30 | 0:10:36
# I don't ever hang my soul Out on the line | 0:10:36 | 0:10:42
# When the witchin' hour comes I always fly away | 0:10:42 | 0:10:47
# Fly away, fly away home | 0:10:47 | 0:10:52
# There's a light in the city That comes down from above | 0:10:55 | 0:11:00
# Leavin' you as wise as a serpent Harmless as a dove | 0:11:00 | 0:11:06
# Don't blow your tomorrows Don't throw away your love | 0:11:06 | 0:11:12
# You've got to be as wise as a serpent, harmless as a dove | 0:11:12 | 0:11:20
# Now you once asked me Why we can't communicate | 0:11:53 | 0:11:58
# But it doesn't always pay to tell the truth | 0:11:58 | 0:12:04
# And if I told you right now You'd only run away | 0:12:04 | 0:12:09
# Run away, run away home | 0:12:09 | 0:12:16
# So we sit in empty rooms And dream our lives away | 0:12:18 | 0:12:22
# While the spirits come and go Without a sound | 0:12:22 | 0:12:29
# Yeah, just like you and me They're tryin' to find the way | 0:12:29 | 0:12:34
# Find the way, find the way home | 0:12:34 | 0:12:40
# There's a light in the city That comes down from above | 0:12:42 | 0:12:48
# Leavin' you as wise as a serpent Harmless as a dove | 0:12:48 | 0:12:54
# Don't blow your tomorrows Don't throw away your love | 0:12:54 | 0:12:59
# You've got to be as wise as a serpent, harmless as a dove | 0:12:59 | 0:13:07
# Ooh... Oh-oh. # | 0:13:18 | 0:13:25
CHEERING AND APPLAUSE | 0:13:37 | 0:13:42
I was in high school and it was this sort of period in music where | 0:13:45 | 0:13:50
there was a lot of bad music on the radio, you know. | 0:13:50 | 0:13:52
And then Gerry was one of... | 0:13:52 | 0:13:54
you know, I would hear Baker Street and Right Down The Line, | 0:13:54 | 0:13:57
and I always liked melodic music, so that appealed to me, right? | 0:13:57 | 0:14:02
So I was curious about him | 0:14:02 | 0:14:03
and then I didn't realise at the time that he was also | 0:14:03 | 0:14:06
the guy from Stealers Wheel as well | 0:14:06 | 0:14:08
and, of course, I heard that song growing up a lot, too. | 0:14:08 | 0:14:11
But it was just one of those... I was just sort of drawn to it, you know. | 0:14:11 | 0:14:16
Right Down The Line has always been my favourite song by Gerry Rafferty, | 0:14:16 | 0:14:20
so that was one of the ones when they first asked me, | 0:14:20 | 0:14:23
I was like, "I hope that's not taken." | 0:14:23 | 0:14:25
# You know I need your love | 0:14:54 | 0:14:57
# You got that hold on me | 0:14:57 | 0:15:02
# As long as I got your love | 0:15:02 | 0:15:04
# You know that I'll never leave | 0:15:04 | 0:15:08
#When I wanted you to share my life | 0:15:08 | 0:15:12
# I had no doubt in my mind | 0:15:12 | 0:15:15
# It's been you, woman | 0:15:15 | 0:15:20
# Right down the line | 0:15:20 | 0:15:23
# I know the way I lean on you | 0:15:26 | 0:15:29
# Only you can see | 0:15:29 | 0:15:32
# The changes that I've been through | 0:15:32 | 0:15:37
# Have left their mark on me | 0:15:37 | 0:15:40
# You've been as constant as the Northern Star | 0:15:40 | 0:15:43
# The brightest light that shines | 0:15:43 | 0:15:47
# It's been you, woman | 0:15:47 | 0:15:51
# Right down the line | 0:15:51 | 0:15:55
# I just wanna say This is my way of telling you | 0:15:58 | 0:16:04
# Everything I could never say before | 0:16:04 | 0:16:09
# Yeah, this is my way of telling you Every day I'm loving you | 0:16:12 | 0:16:21
# Cos you believed in me Through my darkest night | 0:16:21 | 0:16:29
# Put something better inside of me | 0:16:29 | 0:16:33
# You brought me into the light | 0:16:33 | 0:16:38
# Threw away all those crazy dreams | 0:16:38 | 0:16:41
# I put them all behind | 0:16:41 | 0:16:43
# It's been you, woman | 0:16:43 | 0:16:48
# Right down the line | 0:16:48 | 0:16:52
# I just wanna say | 0:17:26 | 0:17:30
# This is my way of telling you | 0:17:30 | 0:17:34
# Everything I could never say before | 0:17:34 | 0:17:39
# Yeah, this is my way of telling you | 0:17:41 | 0:17:47
# Every day I'm loving you So much more | 0:17:47 | 0:17:52
# If I should doubt myself | 0:17:52 | 0:17:55
# If I'm losing ground | 0:17:55 | 0:17:58
# I won't turn to someone else | 0:17:58 | 0:18:02
# They'd only let me down | 0:18:02 | 0:18:06
# When I wanted you to share my life | 0:18:06 | 0:18:09
# I had no doubt in my mind | 0:18:09 | 0:18:12
# It's been you, woman | 0:18:12 | 0:18:17
# Right down the line | 0:18:17 | 0:18:20
# Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh | 0:18:24 | 0:18:31
# Ooh, ooh, ooh | 0:18:31 | 0:18:36
# Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh | 0:18:38 | 0:18:45
# Ooh, ooh | 0:18:45 | 0:18:48
# You got a hold on me | 0:18:48 | 0:18:50
# Right down the line. # | 0:18:52 | 0:18:56
APPLAUSE | 0:18:56 | 0:19:01
Thank you very much! | 0:19:01 | 0:19:02
Thank you. | 0:19:03 | 0:19:04
Martha, Gerry's daughter, and I | 0:19:06 | 0:19:09
had a discussion at Gerry's funeral, after the funeral last January. | 0:19:09 | 0:19:15
about how we should preserve some kind of legacy, | 0:19:15 | 0:19:20
'and the idea came around to it being something based around his songs, really, | 0:19:20 | 0:19:24
'because the songs were what Gerry Rafferty lived for, | 0:19:24 | 0:19:28
'that was his artwork,' | 0:19:28 | 0:19:29
and he expressed himself greatly through songs. | 0:19:29 | 0:19:33
And so, building a concert around his work | 0:19:33 | 0:19:37
and inviting a number of interesting artists to come and perform them | 0:19:37 | 0:19:41
was the order of the day. | 0:19:41 | 0:19:43
# Moonlight and gold | 0:20:37 | 0:20:40
# Midsummer magic when the night meets the day | 0:20:42 | 0:20:48
# And songbirds greet the dawn | 0:20:48 | 0:20:53
# You lie awake | 0:20:55 | 0:20:57
# You watch and wonder while the moon fades away | 0:20:59 | 0:21:05
# And one more day is born | 0:21:05 | 0:21:09
# Tides keep on turning | 0:21:11 | 0:21:15
# While hearts keep on yearning | 0:21:15 | 0:21:20
# To be where they know they belong | 0:21:20 | 0:21:27
# All on a new day | 0:21:29 | 0:21:32
# You'll see in a new way | 0:21:32 | 0:21:37
# The things you've been leaning upon | 0:21:37 | 0:21:44
# Moonlight and gold | 0:21:51 | 0:21:54
# I will awaken to a love | 0:21:55 | 0:22:00
# That runs deeper than the need in me | 0:22:00 | 0:22:06
# While you are sleeping | 0:22:42 | 0:22:46
# The new day comes creeping | 0:22:46 | 0:22:50
# And life keeps on passing you by | 0:22:50 | 0:22:57
# Magic unfolds | 0:22:59 | 0:23:02
# When the blue meets the gold | 0:23:02 | 0:23:06
# And the sun comes to open your eyes | 0:23:06 | 0:23:14
# Moonlight and gold | 0:23:21 | 0:23:24
# Midsummer magic as the night turns to day | 0:23:25 | 0:23:32
# And songbirds greet the dawn | 0:23:32 | 0:23:36
# You lie awake | 0:23:38 | 0:23:42
# You watch and wonder | 0:23:42 | 0:23:45
# While the moon fades away | 0:23:45 | 0:23:49
# And one more day is born | 0:23:49 | 0:23:53
# Moonlight and gold. # | 0:24:29 | 0:24:35
CHEERING AND APPLAUSE | 0:24:35 | 0:24:39
Thank you! | 0:24:39 | 0:24:40
Anybody who knew Gerry and knew his work would know | 0:24:47 | 0:24:50
that harmony was very important to him, was very important | 0:24:50 | 0:24:55
in the music that he made, but it was also a very important thing, | 0:24:55 | 0:24:58
spiritually and inwardly. | 0:24:58 | 0:25:01
And he grew up with two brothers, | 0:25:01 | 0:25:04
Gerry's brothers were called Jim, the next one, | 0:25:04 | 0:25:07
and then Joey was the eldest one. | 0:25:07 | 0:25:10
And Joey and his wife Moira had five children, | 0:25:10 | 0:25:13
and they're all here tonight to sing for you, in harmony, | 0:25:13 | 0:25:17
with Martha. Please welcome. | 0:25:17 | 0:25:20

# We could feel the harmony | 0:25:52 | 0:25:57
# You'd sit there waiting in the wings | 0:25:58 | 0:26:03
# How long have you been waiting | 0:26:03 | 0:26:08
# To let your light shine? | 0:26:08 | 0:26:12

I think everybody is aware of Gerry's music. | 0:29:43 | 0:29:46
I was saying that earlier - the thing with his songs | 0:29:46 | 0:29:49
is that everybody's aware, but people don't realise | 0:29:49 | 0:29:52
that they're his songs. | 0:29:52 | 0:29:53
And I was in that camp - obviously, I'm aware of Baker Street | 0:29:53 | 0:29:57
and you know, just everybody knows certain songs, | 0:29:57 | 0:30:01
but I... Even the fact that he was in Stealers Wheel, | 0:30:01 | 0:30:05
I was aware of it, but you don't really think about it, | 0:30:05 | 0:30:08
you just realise, you look at the breadth of the work and it's staggering, | 0:30:08 | 0:30:11
the man has written some incredible songs that are indelible, | 0:30:11 | 0:30:15
they'll be for ever. | 0:30:15 | 0:30:16
# Well, here I am | 0:30:52 | 0:30:54
# Back in town | 0:30:56 | 0:30:59
# Just as the night | 0:31:00 | 0:31:02
# Is coming down | 0:31:03 | 0:31:07
# Warm wind blowing | 0:31:08 | 0:31:10
# Through the trees | 0:31:11 | 0:31:13
# I watch them swing | 0:31:14 | 0:31:16
# I watch them sway | 0:31:16 | 0:31:18
# Lie here waiting for the day | 0:31:18 | 0:31:23
# Hey, yeah | 0:31:25 | 0:31:26
# Sleep won't come | 0:31:29 | 0:31:32
# I need a drink | 0:31:33 | 0:31:35
# To stop my head | 0:31:37 | 0:31:38
# Don't wanna think | 0:31:40 | 0:31:42
# Wishing I was here with you | 0:31:44 | 0:31:49
# But I know you're so far away | 0:31:51 | 0:31:55
# And I'm here waiting for the day | 0:31:55 | 0:32:00
# Hey, yeah | 0:32:02 | 0:32:04
# Water of life | 0:32:06 | 0:32:09
# Lay your light down on me | 0:32:09 | 0:32:12
# Take me out of the darkness | 0:32:12 | 0:32:17
# Sweet star of the sea | 0:32:17 | 0:32:19
# Water so sweet | 0:32:20 | 0:32:23
# You can open my eyes | 0:32:23 | 0:32:27
# You can bring down the rain | 0:32:27 | 0:32:30
# On this desert so dry | 0:32:30 | 0:32:35
# Out on the street | 0:32:41 | 0:32:43
# It's dark and cold | 0:32:44 | 0:32:46
# Silence speaks | 0:32:48 | 0:32:50
# I hear it call | 0:32:52 | 0:32:54
# The city of | 0:32:55 | 0:32:57
# The living dead | 0:32:59 | 0:33:02
# Count the lights on the motorway | 0:33:02 | 0:33:06
# And I'm here waiting for the day | 0:33:06 | 0:33:11
# Hey, yeah | 0:33:12 | 0:33:15

# You can open my eyes | 0:34:12 | 0:34:15
# You can bring down the rain | 0:34:15 | 0:34:19
# On this desert so dry | 0:34:19 | 0:34:24
# Yes, here I am | 0:34:28 | 0:34:32

to do this for a living | 0:35:54 | 0:35:56
so it's cool that I get to do that once in a while. | 0:35:56 | 0:35:58
# You still got that light in your eye | 0:36:13 | 0:36:18

# We still gotta long way We still gotta long way to go | 0:36:34 | 0:36:39
# The first time I set eyes on you | 0:37:08 | 0:37:12
# And I listened to you sing Yeah, yeah | 0:37:12 | 0:37:16
# We didn't have to speak for the words said everything | 0:37:16 | 0:37:23
# Then you walked into my life | 0:37:23 | 0:37:27
# And we were on our way, yeah | 0:37:27 | 0:37:30
# So long ago But it seems like yesterday | 0:37:31 | 0:37:36

# Now some of my best memories | 0:38:08 | 0:38:11
# Are days I spent with you Yeah, yeah | 0:38:11 | 0:38:16
# Each time we hit the road it was always somethin' new | 0:38:16 | 0:38:21
# Spaced out on another drunk | 0:38:23 | 0:38:27
# And singin' in the sun, yeah, yeah | 0:38:27 | 0:38:30
# Another bottle dead and a new day just begun | 0:38:31 | 0:38:35

# We still gotta long way We still gotta long way to go | 0:39:00 | 0:39:05
# Shinin' light, shinin' bright on the days gone down | 0:39:05 | 0:39:09
# Shinin' light, shinin' bright on the days gone down | 0:39:11 | 0:39:17
# Shinin' light, shinin' bright on the days gone down | 0:39:19 | 0:39:24
# We won't forget the days gone down | 0:39:34 | 0:39:38
# They're written in our hearts Yeah, yeah | 0:39:38 | 0:39:41
# And we're as much in tune as we were right at the start | 0:39:41 | 0:39:48
# All seems so much harder now | 0:39:49 | 0:39:53
# It seemed so easy then, yeah, yeah | 0:39:53 | 0:39:56
# Maybe someday just for fun we might do it all again | 0:39:56 | 0:40:01
# I just wanna tell you... | 0:40:01 | 0:40:03

How well do you think Gerry Rafferty will continue to be appreciated? | 0:41:52 | 0:41:57
I think he'll be more appreciated with the distance of time. | 0:41:57 | 0:42:02
I think if you've got songs that really survive and the quality | 0:42:02 | 0:42:05
running through it, | 0:42:05 | 0:42:06
I think those ones tend to be better appreciated as the years go by. | 0:42:06 | 0:42:10
I think his work will stand the test of time. | 0:42:10 | 0:42:12
# Now the night train is waitin' | 0:42:30 | 0:42:34
# To take me away | 0:42:34 | 0:42:36
# And I'm still feelin' guilty cos you're wanting me to stay | 0:42:36 | 0:42:43
# Well, I know, how I know | 0:42:44 | 0:42:46
# It's harder on you | 0:42:48 | 0:42:52
# But you said it yourself There's nothing else we could do | 0:42:52 | 0:42:56
# When the wheels start turnin' | 0:42:58 | 0:43:01
# Takin' me through the night | 0:43:01 | 0:43:05
# Out there in the darkness There's a star shinin' bright | 0:43:06 | 0:43:13
# And it makes me feel better | 0:43:13 | 0:43:16
# Just to see it up there | 0:43:16 | 0:43:20
# I hope you're thinkin' about it hope you know I still care | 0:43:20 | 0:43:25

I've been charged with singing his biggest hit, Baker Street | 0:47:02 | 0:47:07
so I don't know... | 0:47:07 | 0:47:08
I sang it last year at the Celtic Connections | 0:47:08 | 0:47:11
with the Transatlantic Sessions live tour because Gerry | 0:47:11 | 0:47:14
had just passed on a few weeks before that | 0:47:14 | 0:47:18
and so we decided to sing it on tour | 0:47:18 | 0:47:21
so I think they came back to me to do it again. | 0:47:21 | 0:47:23
# Winding your way down on Baker Street | 0:48:22 | 0:48:26
# Light in your head and dead on your feet | 0:48:26 | 0:48:30
# Well, another crazy day You drink the night away | 0:48:30 | 0:48:34
# And forget about everything | 0:48:34 | 0:48:37
# This city desert makes you feel so cold | 0:48:39 | 0:48:43
# It's got so many people but it's got no soul | 0:48:43 | 0:48:47
# And it's taken you so long to find out you were wrong | 0:48:47 | 0:48:51
# When you thought it held everything | 0:48:51 | 0:48:55
# You used to think that it was so easy | 0:48:56 | 0:49:00
# You used to say that it was so easy | 0:49:00 | 0:49:04
# But you're tryin' You're tryin' now | 0:49:04 | 0:49:10
# Another year and then you'd be happy | 0:49:13 | 0:49:18
# Just one more year and then you'd be happy | 0:49:18 | 0:49:21
# But you're cryin' You're cryin' now | 0:49:21 | 0:49:28
# Way down the street there's a lad in his place | 0:50:04 | 0:50:08
# He opens the door He's got that look on his face | 0:50:08 | 0:50:12
# And he asks you where you've been | 0:50:12 | 0:50:14
