we have young actors from the Scottish Youth Theatre | 0:01:50 | 0:01:53
to perform some Christmas poems for us. | 0:01:53 | 0:01:56
Quite a line-up. | 0:01:56 | 0:01:57
So let's begin our celebrations with a much-loved carol | 0:01:57 | 0:02:01
that takes us back to where the story began more than 2,000 years ago... | 0:02:01 | 0:02:06
# Once in royal David's city | 0:02:11 | 0:02:18
# Stood a lowly cattle shed | 0:02:18 | 0:02:24
# Where a mother laid her baby | 0:02:24 | 0:02:30
# In a manger for his bed | 0:02:30 | 0:02:36
# Mary was that mother mild | 0:02:36 | 0:02:43
# Jesus Christ her little child | 0:02:43 | 0:02:50
# He came down to earth from heaven | 0:02:51 | 0:02:57
# Who is God and Lord of all | 0:02:57 | 0:03:03
# And His shelter was a stable | 0:03:03 | 0:03:09
# And His cradle was a stall | 0:03:09 | 0:03:15
# With the poor and meek and lowly | 0:03:15 | 0:03:20
# Lived on earth our Saviour holy | 0:03:20 | 0:03:28
# Not in that poor lowly stable | 0:03:30 | 0:03:35
# With the oxen standing by | 0:03:35 | 0:03:42
# We shall see Him, but in heaven | 0:03:42 | 0:03:48
# Set at God's right hand on high | 0:03:48 | 0:03:54
# When like stars His children crowned | 0:03:54 | 0:04:00
# All in white shall wait around. # | 0:04:00 | 0:04:10
Open the window | 0:04:12 | 0:04:14
What do you see? | 0:04:14 | 0:04:15
A sprig of holly | 0:04:15 | 0:04:17
A Christmas tree | 0:04:17 | 0:04:18
Reindeer, Santa's sleigh | 0:04:18 | 0:04:20
Mistletoe, a snowy day | 0:04:20 | 0:04:23
A robin redbreast | 0:04:23 | 0:04:25
A blazing fire | 0:04:25 | 0:04:26
Christmas cards | 0:04:26 | 0:04:28
A church choir | 0:04:28 | 0:04:29
A box of crackers | 0:04:29 | 0:04:31
A frozen pond | 0:04:31 | 0:04:32
A Christmas cake | 0:04:32 | 0:04:34
A fairy with a wand | 0:04:34 | 0:04:36
A big parcel | 0:04:36 | 0:04:37
A chocolate bar | 0:04:37 | 0:04:39
A Christmas pudding | 0:04:39 | 0:04:40
A toy car | 0:04:40 | 0:04:42
An angel | 0:04:42 | 0:04:44
A shining star | 0:04:44 | 0:04:45
Shepherds on a hillside | 0:04:45 | 0:04:48
A stable bare | 0:04:48 | 0:04:49
And three wise men worshipping | 0:04:49 | 0:04:53
The baby lying there. | 0:04:53 | 0:04:55
I heard the bells on Christmas Day | 0:06:50 | 0:06:52
Their old, familiar carols play | 0:06:52 | 0:06:55
And wild and sweet | 0:06:55 | 0:06:56
The words repeat | 0:06:56 | 0:06:57
Of peace on earth, goodwill to men | 0:06:57 | 0:07:00
And thought how the day had come | 0:07:00 | 0:07:02
The belfries of all Christendom | 0:07:02 | 0:07:05
Had rolled along | 0:07:05 | 0:07:07
The unbroken song | 0:07:07 | 0:07:08
Of peace on earth, goodwill to men | 0:07:08 | 0:07:11
Till ringing, singing on its way | 0:07:11 | 0:07:13
The world revolved from night to day | 0:07:13 | 0:07:16
A voice, a chime | 0:07:16 | 0:07:17
A chant sublime | 0:07:17 | 0:07:19
Of peace on earth, goodwill to men | 0:07:19 | 0:07:22
And in despair, I bowed my head | 0:07:23 | 0:07:25
"There is no peace on earth," I said | 0:07:25 | 0:07:28
"For hate is strong | 0:07:28 | 0:07:29
"And mocks the song | 0:07:29 | 0:07:31
"Of peace on earth, goodwill to men | 0:07:31 | 0:07:33
Then peeled the bells more loud than deep | 0:07:35 | 0:07:37
God is not dead, nor doth he sleep | 0:07:38 | 0:07:41
The wrong shall fail | 0:07:41 | 0:07:42
The right prevail | 0:07:42 | 0:07:44
With peace on earth, goodwill to men. | 0:07:45 | 0:07:48

What a lovely song that is, | 0:11:26 | 0:11:28
beautifully sung there by the Inverclyde Junior Choir. | 0:11:28 | 0:11:31
With its message of peace, | 0:11:31 | 0:11:33
Andy Beck's song seems to strike the right note for Christmas Eve. | 0:11:33 | 0:11:37
Our next carol also has the theme of peace. | 0:11:37 | 0:11:40
It was first sung on Christmas Eve, 1818, | 0:11:40 | 0:11:44
in the Church of St Nicholas in the village of Oberndorf in Austria. | 0:11:44 | 0:11:48
With its gentle rocking melody and simple message, | 0:11:48 | 0:11:52
it's since become the world's most popular carol. | 0:11:52 | 0:11:55
It is, of course, Silent Night. | 0:11:55 | 0:11:59
# Silent night | 0:11:59 | 0:12:03
# Holy night | 0:12:03 | 0:12:07
# Sleeps the world | 0:12:07 | 0:12:11
# Hid from sight | 0:12:11 | 0:12:16
# Mary and Joseph in stable bare | 0:12:16 | 0:12:25
# Watch o'er the child | 0:12:25 | 0:12:29
# Beloved and fair | 0:12:29 | 0:12:33
# Sleep in heavenly rest | 0:12:33 | 0:12:43
# Sleep in heavenly rest | 0:12:43 | 0:12:51
# Silent night | 0:12:52 | 0:12:56
# Holy night | 0:12:56 | 0:13:01
# Shepherds first saw the sight | 0:13:01 | 0:13:10
# Glory straight from heaven above | 0:13:10 | 0:13:18
# Heavenly hosts sing hallelujah | 0:13:18 | 0:13:27
# Christ the Saviour is born | 0:13:27 | 0:13:36
# Christ the Saviour is born | 0:13:36 | 0:13:42

# Saviour, since thou art born. # | 0:14:30 | 0:14:38
One way or another, everyone's going to Bethlehem tonight - | 0:14:41 | 0:14:46
Mary and Joseph, the shepherds, the angels, the wise men, you and me. | 0:14:46 | 0:14:53
For Bethlehem is more than just the town on the outskirts of Jerusalem | 0:14:53 | 0:14:59
where Jesus was born, where Mary gave birth to the eternal Son of God - | 0:14:59 | 0:15:04
it is the place where God shares our human life, | 0:15:04 | 0:15:10
where we can come close to God and gaze upon him. | 0:15:10 | 0:15:14
So where do we find OUR Bethlehem, | 0:15:14 | 0:15:18
our place of encounter with God? | 0:15:18 | 0:15:21
Let me suggest two places. | 0:15:21 | 0:15:23
We find our Bethlehem where human love is at its purest and best, | 0:15:24 | 0:15:32
as in the love of Mary and Joseph for the Christ child, | 0:15:32 | 0:15:36
a self-giving, self-denying love that we believe has its origin in the heart of God. | 0:15:36 | 0:15:43
And we find our Bethlehem among those for whom life is not comfortable, | 0:15:44 | 0:15:50
but is hard, as it was for Mary, Joseph and Jesus that first Christmas. | 0:15:50 | 0:15:57
When we stop in our busy lives and do something to help those for whom life is a real struggle, | 0:15:58 | 0:16:06
then we discover that we too have arrived at Bethlehem | 0:16:06 | 0:16:11
and in the company of Mary and Joseph, the shepherds and the wise men | 0:16:11 | 0:16:16
find ourselves gazing on the very face of God, | 0:16:16 | 0:16:21
so come, all ye faithful, come to Bethlehem. | 0:16:21 | 0:16:27
# O come all ye faithful | 0:16:34 | 0:16:39
# Joyful and triumphant | 0:16:39 | 0:16:43
# O come ye | 0:16:43 | 0:16:46
# O come ye to Bethlehem | 0:16:46 | 0:16:53
# Come and behold him | 0:16:53 | 0:16:58
# Born the King of angels | 0:16:58 | 0:17:02
# O come, let us adore him! | 0:17:02 | 0:17:07
# O come, let us adore him! | 0:17:07 | 0:17:12
# O come, let us adore him | 0:17:12 | 0:17:19
# Christ the Lord! | 0:17:19 | 0:17:24
# Sing, choirs of angels | 0:17:26 | 0:17:31
# Sing in exultation | 0:17:31 | 0:17:36
# Sing, all ye citizens of heav'n above | 0:17:36 | 0:17:44
# Glory to God in the highest | 0:17:46 | 0:17:55
# O come, let us adore him! | 0:17:55 | 0:18:00
# O come, let us adore him! | 0:18:00 | 0:18:06
# O come, let us adore him | 0:18:06 | 0:18:11
# Christ the Lord! | 0:18:11 | 0:18:18
# Yea, Lord, we greet thee | 0:18:19 | 0:18:24
# Born this happy morning | 0:18:24 | 0:18:29
# O Jesus, for evermore | 0:18:29 | 0:18:35
# be thy name adored | 0:18:35 | 0:18:39
# Word of the Father | 0:18:39 | 0:18:45
# Now in flesh appearing | 0:18:45 | 0:18:49
# O come, let us adore him! | 0:18:49 | 0:18:55
# O come, let us adore him! | 0:18:55 | 0:19:00
# O come, let us adore him! | 0:19:00 | 0:19:06
# Christ the Lord! # | 0:19:06 | 0:19:15
"O come, all ye faithful, joyful and triumphant." | 0:19:17 | 0:19:21
What a magnificent sound to welcome Christmas. | 0:19:21 | 0:19:24
I can still hear it reverberating around the whole abbey. | 0:19:24 | 0:19:27
Yes, Christmas is here. | 0:19:27 | 0:19:29
On behalf of us all here in Paisley Abbey, | 0:19:29 | 0:19:31
may I wish you, wherever you are, a very happy Christmas. | 0:19:31 | 0:19:35
It's a time for rejoicing | 0:19:35 | 0:19:37
and the Inverclyde Junior Choir are certainly in a celebratory mood. | 0:19:37 | 0:19:42
Here they are with a new, exciting, up-tempo setting of the familiar words - | 0:19:42 | 0:19:46

# He will be called Emmanuel! # | 0:22:32 | 0:22:35
There's a star at the top of the Christmas tree | 0:22:38 | 0:22:41
On the floor the parcels are piled | 0:22:41 | 0:22:44
The light of the star is reflected | 0:22:44 | 0:22:47
In the eyes of a happy child | 0:22:47 | 0:22:49
A star shone out at Bethlehem | 0:22:49 | 0:22:51
So wonderful and rare | 0:22:51 | 0:22:53
It showed the way to the baby | 0:22:53 | 0:22:55
In the stable cold and bare | 0:22:55 | 0:22:57
It showed the way to the wise men | 0:22:57 | 0:22:59
Who hoped to find a king | 0:22:59 | 0:23:00
But all they found in that stable | 0:23:00 | 0:23:02
Was a little baby thing | 0:23:02 | 0:23:03
There's an angel on the Christmas tree | 0:23:03 | 0:23:06
Dressed in shining white | 0:23:06 | 0:23:08
With arms outstretched to greet us all | 0:23:08 | 0:23:11
On this blessed, holy night | 0:23:11 | 0:23:13
There's candles on the Christmas tree | 0:23:13 | 0:23:16
Shedding forth their light | 0:23:16 | 0:23:18
Enfolding us in their glowing warmth | 0:23:18 | 0:23:20
On this our Christmas night | 0:23:20 | 0:23:22
Christmas trees, stars and angels | 0:23:22 | 0:23:25
Candles burning bright | 0:23:25 | 0:23:26
What do they mean to us all right now | 0:23:26 | 0:23:29
As we think of the first Christmas night? | 0:23:29 | 0:23:32
# O little town of Bethlehem | 0:23:32 | 0:23:37
# How still we see thee lie | 0:23:37 | 0:23:43
# Above thy deep and dreamless sleep | 0:23:43 | 0:23:49
# The silent stars go by | 0:23:49 | 0:23:54
# Yet in thy dark streets shineth | 0:23:54 | 0:24:01
# The everlasting light | 0:24:01 | 0:24:06
# The hopes and fears of all the years | 0:24:06 | 0:24:13
# Are met in thee tonight | 0:24:13 | 0:24:19
# How silently, how silently | 0:24:19 | 0:24:25
# The wondrous gift is giv'n | 0:24:25 | 0:24:31
# So God imparts to human hearts | 0:24:31 | 0:24:36
# The blessings of His heav'n | 0:24:36 | 0:24:42
# No ear may hear his coming | 0:24:42 | 0:24:48
# But in this world of sin | 0:24:48 | 0:24:53
# Where meek souls will receive him | 0:24:53 | 0:24:59
# Still the dear Christ enters in | 0:24:59 | 0:25:07
# O holy child of Bethlehem | 0:25:07 | 0:25:13
# Descend to us, we pray | 0:25:13 | 0:25:18
# Cast out our sin and enter in | 0:25:18 | 0:25:24
# Be born in us today | 0:25:24 | 0:25:30
# We hear the Christmas angels | 0:25:30 | 0:25:36
# The great glad tidings tell | 0:25:36 | 0:25:42
# O come to us, abide with us | 0:25:42 | 0:25:46
# Our Lord Emmanuel. # | 0:25:46 | 0:25:55
BELL RESONATES | 0:25:57 | 0:26:02
Isn't that a lovely sound? | 0:26:02 | 0:26:03
The handbell is one of the world's oldest instruments. | 0:26:03 | 0:26:07
They were first described in China as far back as 1600 BC. | 0:26:07 | 0:26:11
Since then, they've been associated with many the world's great religions, particularly Buddhism. | 0:26:11 | 0:26:17
In medieval times, it was common for Christians to travel throughout Europe | 0:26:17 | 0:26:21
ringing handbells when they spread the news of the risen Christ, | 0:26:21 | 0:26:24
summoning people to congregate and pray. | 0:26:24 | 0:26:28
Eventually, large bronze bells were cast and church towers were constructed to house them. | 0:26:28 | 0:26:33
It was thought they were a more efficient way of summoning the faithful to prayer, | 0:26:33 | 0:26:38
but there's something especially moving about the clear and magical sound of the handbell. | 0:26:38 | 0:26:44
Maybe you'll agree when you hear them ring out this well-known 16th century carol tune. | 0:26:44 | 0:26:51
PLAYS INTRO TO "Rocking" | 0:28:24 | 0:28:25
# Little Jesus, sweetly sleep | 0:28:31 | 0:28:37
# Do not stir | 0:28:37 | 0:28:40
# We will lend a coat of fur | 0:28:40 | 0:28:47
# We will rock you | 0:28:47 | 0:28:50
# Rock you, rock you | 0:28:50 | 0:28:53
# We will rock you, rock you | 0:28:53 | 0:29:00
# See the fur to keep you warm | 0:29:00 | 0:29:06
# Snugly round your tiny form | 0:29:06 | 0:29:15
# Mary's little baby, sleep | 0:29:20 | 0:29:26
# Sweetly sleep | 0:29:26 | 0:29:30
# Sleep in comfort slumber deep | 0:29:30 | 0:29:36
CHOIR HARMONISES | 0:29:36 | 0:29:40
# We will rock you | 0:29:43 | 0:29:47
# Rock you, rock you | 0:29:47 | 0:29:50
# We will serve you all we can | 0:29:50 | 0:29:58
# Darling, darling little man. # | 0:29:58 | 0:30:08
Have you ever wondered | 0:30:21 | 0:30:23
Where Santa leaves his sleigh? | 0:30:23 | 0:30:26
# When he brings toys for girls and boys | 0:30:26 | 0:30:29
To find on Christmas Day? | 0:30:29 | 0:30:30
For reindeers, all the rooftops | 0:30:30 | 0:30:32
Are much too smooth and steep | 0:30:32 | 0:30:34
One slip, and they'd go sliding down | 0:30:34 | 0:30:38
And land in one big heap | 0:30:38 | 0:30:39
But if they were in the garden | 0:30:39 | 0:30:43
How could Santa, with his sack, | 0:30:43 | 0:30:45
Climb right up to the rooftop | 0:30:45 | 0:30:48
Then climb down the chimney stack? | 0:30:48 | 0:30:50
There's too much danger on the roads | 0:30:50 | 0:30:54
So where CAN he leave his sleigh? | 0:30:54 | 0:30:56
Perhaps you'd like to ask him | 0:30:56 | 0:30:58
When he comes round your way! | 0:30:58 | 0:31:00
Auntie Mimi's mistletoe | 0:31:07 | 0:31:08
She ties it to her head | 0:31:08 | 0:31:10
And goes round kissing everyone | 0:31:10 | 0:31:12
She kissed my Uncle Fred | 0:31:12 | 0:31:14
She kissed my mum, she kissed my dad | 0:31:14 | 0:31:17
The postman and the cat | 0:31:17 | 0:31:19
She kissed the man next door so hard | 0:31:19 | 0:31:21
She squashed his glasses flat | 0:31:21 | 0:31:23
She kissed my little brother | 0:31:23 | 0:31:25
Though he hid behind a tree | 0:31:25 | 0:31:27
And now she's coming my way | 0:31:27 | 0:31:29
But she won't get me! | 0:31:29 | 0:31:31
I have a feeling that wee boy's still running! | 0:31:31 | 0:31:34
