Now to the story of the wise men with their gifts of gold | 0:23:13 | 0:23:16
and frankincense and myrrh as told in Matthew's Gospel. | 0:23:16 | 0:23:21
"Jesus was born in the town of Bethlehem in Judea | 0:23:21 | 0:23:25
"during the time when Herod was king. | 0:23:25 | 0:23:28
"Soon afterwards, some men who studied the stars came from the east | 0:23:29 | 0:23:34
"to Jerusalem and asked, 'where is the baby born to be | 0:23:34 | 0:23:39
"'the king of the Jews? | 0:23:39 | 0:23:42
"'We saw His star when it came up in the east | 0:23:42 | 0:23:45
"'and we have come to worship Him.' | 0:23:45 | 0:23:47
"When Herod heard about this he was very upset | 0:23:49 | 0:23:52
"and so was everyone else in Jerusalem. | 0:23:52 | 0:23:55
"He called together all the chief priests and the teachers | 0:23:57 | 0:24:00
"of the law and asked them, 'where will the Messiah be born?' | 0:24:00 | 0:24:05
"'In the town of Bethlehem in Judea,' they answered. | 0:24:06 | 0:24:10
"So Herod called the visitors from the east to a secret meeting | 0:24:10 | 0:24:14
"and found out from them the exact time the star had appeared. | 0:24:14 | 0:24:18
"Then he sent them to Bethlehem with these instructions. | 0:24:19 | 0:24:24
"'Go and make a careful search for the child and when you find Him | 0:24:24 | 0:24:28
"'let me know so that I too may go and worship Him.' | 0:24:28 | 0:24:32
"And so they left and on their way they saw the same star | 0:24:34 | 0:24:38
"they had seen in the east. | 0:24:38 | 0:24:40
"It went ahead of them | 0:24:40 | 0:24:42
"until it stopped over the place where the child was. | 0:24:42 | 0:24:46
"They went into the house and when they saw the child | 0:24:47 | 0:24:51
"with His mother Mary, they knelt down and worshipped Him. | 0:24:51 | 0:24:55
"They brought out their gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh | 0:24:56 | 0:25:01
"and presented them to Him." | 0:25:01 | 0:25:03
Gold. We never hear of this gift again. | 0:26:35 | 0:26:40
What use was gold to one who dined at the tables of other men | 0:26:40 | 0:26:45
and took lodging where He could? | 0:26:45 | 0:26:47
Frankincense. | 0:26:49 | 0:26:50
We never hear of this gift again. | 0:26:50 | 0:26:53
What use was frankincense to one who worshipped where He stood? | 0:26:53 | 0:26:58
The sky above Him a bigger cathedral than any built by man. | 0:26:58 | 0:27:04
Myrrh. | 0:27:04 | 0:27:06
We never hear of this gift again. | 0:27:06 | 0:27:09
What use was myrrh to one who took healing | 0:27:09 | 0:27:12
so seriously that He did it without herbs and medicines? | 0:27:12 | 0:27:17
I begin to wonder if Matthew was telling us a story here. | 0:27:19 | 0:27:24
A story which points out that the old ways of organising society | 0:27:24 | 0:27:30
and human relationships | 0:27:30 | 0:27:32
are made bankrupt by the coming of this child. | 0:27:32 | 0:27:36
Do the wise men say to Him, "This is the best we have got. | 0:27:36 | 0:27:41
"Now show us a better way." | 0:27:41 | 0:27:45
But maybe we're meant to be impressed by the wise men. | 0:27:45 | 0:27:48
Their gifts speak of the harvest of resources | 0:27:48 | 0:27:52
which we have at our disposal. | 0:27:52 | 0:27:54
Were they saying to Him, "The riches of the Earth are yours, | 0:27:54 | 0:27:59
"and to you they properly belong. | 0:27:59 | 0:28:03
"Show us how to use them. | 0:28:03 | 0:28:05
"Take our gold, and tell us how to redeem it, Redeemer Child. | 0:28:05 | 0:28:10
"Tell us how to dig deep in our pockets | 0:28:10 | 0:28:13
"for the victims of natural disasters. | 0:28:13 | 0:28:16
"People who need our gold today and for many days to come. | 0:28:16 | 0:28:21
"Take our frankincense and tell us again how to redeem it, | 0:28:21 | 0:28:25
"redeemer child. | 0:28:25 | 0:28:27
"Tell us that worship is about the giving of self, | 0:28:27 | 0:28:31
"the offering of self, | 0:28:31 | 0:28:33
"not some cosy activity we indulge in to get a feel-good factor | 0:28:33 | 0:28:37
"coursing through our own veins. | 0:28:37 | 0:28:40
"Take our myrrh and tell us again how to redeem it, Redeemer Child. | 0:28:41 | 0:28:46
"Tell us that healing is always a gift, | 0:28:46 | 0:28:51
"and that some healing is done by the words we do NOT say, | 0:28:51 | 0:28:55
"when to say the crass and the obvious is to wound, | 0:28:55 | 0:28:59
"and to say the blissful is to lift and mend." | 0:28:59 | 0:29:04

# And the Babe, the world's redeemer | 0:30:41 | 0:30:46
# First revealed His sacred face | 0:30:46 | 0:30:50
# Evermore and evermore! | 0:30:50 | 0:30:56
# This is He whom seers in old time | 0:30:57 | 0:31:01
# Chanted of with one accord | 0:31:01 | 0:31:05
# When the voices of the prophets | 0:31:05 | 0:31:09
# Promised in their faithful word | 0:31:09 | 0:31:13
# Now He shines the long expected | 0:31:13 | 0:31:18
# Let creation praise its Lord | 0:31:18 | 0:31:22
# Evermore and evermore! | 0:31:22 | 0:31:28
# O ye heights of Heaven adore Him | 0:31:28 | 0:31:32
# Angel hosts His praises sing | 0:31:32 | 0:31:37
# Powers, dominions bow before Him | 0:31:37 | 0:31:40
# And extol our God and King | 0:31:40 | 0:31:45
# Let no tongue on Earth be silent | 0:31:45 | 0:31:50
# Every voice in concert sing | 0:31:50 | 0:31:54
# Evermore and evermore! | 0:31:54 | 0:32:00
# Thee let old men, Thee let young men | 0:32:00 | 0:32:04
# Thee let boys in chorus sing | 0:32:04 | 0:32:08
# Matrons, virgins, little maidens | 0:32:08 | 0:32:12
# With glad voices answering | 0:32:12 | 0:32:16
# Let their guileless songs re-echo | 0:32:16 | 0:32:22
# And the heart its music bring | 0:32:22 | 0:32:26
# Evermore and evermore! # | 0:32:26 | 0:32:32
The Christmas story does have its darker moments. | 0:32:34 | 0:32:38
When Herod heard that Jesus was born, he responded by lashing out, | 0:32:38 | 0:32:42
killing innocent children. | 0:32:42 | 0:32:44
We think of how the past all that time ago has resonances today | 0:32:44 | 0:32:50
in a reading from Matthew's Gospel, a carol, | 0:32:50 | 0:32:53
and a contemporary reflection. | 0:32:53 | 0:32:55
After they had left, | 0:32:55 | 0:32:57
an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph and said, | 0:32:57 | 0:33:03
"Herod will be looking for the child in order to kill Him, | 0:33:03 | 0:33:06
"so, get up, take the child and His mother, and escape to Egypt, | 0:33:06 | 0:33:12
"and stay there until I tell you to leave." | 0:33:12 | 0:33:15
Joseph got up, took the child and His mother, | 0:33:15 | 0:33:19
and left during the night for Egypt, where he stayed until Herod died. | 0:33:19 | 0:33:25
Lord, you arrived safely in Egypt, | 0:35:44 | 0:35:46
though we don't know what the journey was really like. | 0:35:46 | 0:35:50
Today's refugees may have to travel dangerously to reach | 0:35:50 | 0:35:54
a place of safety in unseaworthy boats in the Mediterranean, | 0:35:54 | 0:35:59
in the backs of lorries across the Channel. | 0:35:59 | 0:36:03
A desperate few fatally in the wheelhouse of a jumbo jet. | 0:36:03 | 0:36:08
Protect them on their journeys | 0:36:08 | 0:36:12
from the rapacity of those who want to profit from their helplessness. | 0:36:12 | 0:36:17
From the greed of wealthy nations, | 0:36:17 | 0:36:19
who want to keep too much of the world's wealth for themselves. | 0:36:19 | 0:36:24
From the unscrupulous who may prey upon them when they arrive, | 0:36:24 | 0:36:29
and may an angel keep guard over them. | 0:36:29 | 0:36:33
We're almost at the end of our Christmas celebration. | 0:36:33 | 0:36:37
I hope you've enjoyed singing along. | 0:36:37 | 0:36:39
In a moment, we'll hear the closing prayer, | 0:36:39 | 0:36:41
and then we'll sing O Come All Ye Faithful. | 0:36:41 | 0:36:44
But, first, the Aberdeen University Chamber Choir is going to sing | 0:36:44 | 0:36:48
Wherever You Are. | 0:36:48 | 0:36:49
It was composed by Professor Paul Mealor for the Army Wives Choir, | 0:36:49 | 0:36:53
but it's got a resonance for us all, | 0:36:53 | 0:36:55
as we think about those we love wherever they are this Christmas. | 0:36:55 | 0:37:00
Wherever you are, I wish you a very happy one. | 0:37:00 | 0:37:04
# Ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah | 0:37:09 | 0:37:13
# Ah-ah-ah | 0:37:13 | 0:37:16
# Ah-ah | 0:37:16 | 0:37:20
# Wherever you are, my love will keep you safe | 0:37:23 | 0:37:30
# My heart will build a bridge of light | 0:37:30 | 0:37:34
# Across both time and space | 0:37:34 | 0:37:37
# Wherever you are, our hearts still beat as one | 0:37:37 | 0:37:44
# I hold you in my dreams each night | 0:37:44 | 0:37:47
# Until your task is done | 0:37:47 | 0:37:50
# Light up the darkness, my wondrous star | 0:37:50 | 0:37:57
# Our hopes and dreams, my heart and yours | 0:37:57 | 0:38:01
# Forever shining far | 0:38:01 | 0:38:04
# Light up the darkness, my prince of peace | 0:38:04 | 0:38:11
# May the stars shine all around you | 0:38:11 | 0:38:14
# May your courage never cease | 0:38:14 | 0:38:22
# Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh | 0:38:22 | 0:38:26
# Wherever I am, I will love you day by day | 0:38:26 | 0:38:32
# I will keep you safe, cling on to faith | 0:38:32 | 0:38:36
# Along the dark, dark way | 0:38:36 | 0:38:39
# Wherever I am, I hold on through the night | 0:38:39 | 0:38:46
# I will pray each day, a safe return | 0:38:46 | 0:38:49
# Will look now through the light | 0:38:49 | 0:38:52
# Light up the darkness, my wondrous star | 0:38:52 | 0:38:59
# Our hopes and dreams, my heart and yours | 0:38:59 | 0:39:03
# Forever shining far | 0:39:03 | 0:39:06
# Light up the darkness, my prince of peace | 0:39:06 | 0:39:13
# May the stars shine all around you | 0:39:13 | 0:39:17
# May your courage never cease | 0:39:17 | 0:39:25
# Ah-ah-ah-ah | 0:39:25 | 0:39:28
# Ah-ah-ah | 0:39:28 | 0:39:29
# May your courage | 0:39:29 | 0:39:33
# Never cease. # | 0:39:33 | 0:39:41
Come to us, Lord Jesus Christ. | 0:39:45 | 0:39:49
Come as we search the Scriptures and see God's hidden purpose. | 0:39:49 | 0:39:56
Come as we walk the lonely road, needing a companion. | 0:39:56 | 0:40:02
Come when life mystifies and perplexes us. | 0:40:02 | 0:40:07
Come in to our disappointments and our needs. | 0:40:09 | 0:40:13
Come at table, where we share our food and hopes. | 0:40:13 | 0:40:19
And, coming, | 0:40:21 | 0:40:22
open our eyes to recognising you. | 0:40:22 | 0:40:27
Amen. | 0:40:28 | 0:40:30 | |
# Yea, Lord, we greet thee | 0:43:16 | 0:43:22
# Born this happy morning | 0:43:22 | 0:43:27
# Jesus, to Thee be glory given | 0:43:27 | 0:43:35
# Word of the Father | 0:43:38 | 0:43:43
# Now in flesh appearing | 0:43:43 | 0:43:48
# O come, let us adore Him | 0:43:48 | 0:43:53
# O come, let us adore Him | 0:43:53 | 0:43:58
# O come, let us adore Him | 0:43:58 | 0:44:04
# Christ | 0:44:04 | 0:44:09
# The Lord. # | 0:44:09 | 0:44:14 |
