Good morning. Welcome to All Saints
Fulham and a very happy Christmas to | 0:00:32 | 0:00:37
you. We are in west London on the
northside of the River Thames at | 0:00:37 | 0:00:42
Bonnybridge and there has been a
church on this site for over 900 | 0:00:42 | 0:00:46
years. Today, are packed to the
rafters as we wait to welcome you to | 0:00:46 | 0:00:49
our Eucharist for Christmas morning.
-- at Putney bridge. | 0:00:49 | 0:00:54
Grace and peace from God our Father,
and the Lord Jesus | 0:03:01 | 0:03:03
Christ be with you. | 0:03:03 | 0:03:05
ALL: And also with you. | 0:03:05 | 0:03:13
A very warm welcome to all and those
at home watching us this morning. We | 0:03:13 | 0:03:18
gather for worship on this very
special day with a goodly sprinkling | 0:03:18 | 0:03:23
of young shepherds and angels and
even one King, to mark the moment | 0:03:23 | 0:03:29
when the heaven came down to earth
and God revealed himself as a babe | 0:03:29 | 0:03:34
in a manger, born in a stable far
from home. As the story of Love | 0:03:34 | 0:03:42
incarnate unfolds, so we come to the
table where bread and wine is | 0:03:42 | 0:03:48
blessed, broken and shared, in
remembrance of Christ, who brings | 0:03:48 | 0:03:54
light, hope and friendship to all
who believe and trust in him. And so | 0:03:54 | 0:04:07
now, in awe of the newborn Christ
child, we open our hearts in | 0:04:07 | 0:04:11
penitence and faith. | 0:04:11 | 0:04:12
God our Father, you
sent your Son full of | 0:04:12 | 0:04:14
grace and truth:
forgive our failure to | 0:04:14 | 0:04:16
receive him. | 0:04:16 | 0:04:18
Lord, have mercy. | 0:04:18 | 0:04:21
ALL: Lord, have mercy. | 0:04:21 | 0:04:24
Jesus our Saviour,
you were born in poverty | 0:04:24 | 0:04:28
and laid in a manger: | 0:04:28 | 0:04:30
forgive our
greed and rejection of your ways. | 0:04:30 | 0:04:35
Christ, have mercy. | 0:04:35 | 0:04:37
ALL: Christ, have mercy. | 0:04:37 | 0:04:40
Spirit of Love, your servant
Mary responded joyfully | 0:04:40 | 0:04:44
to your call: forgive the
hardness of our hearts. | 0:04:44 | 0:04:50
Lord, have mercy. | 0:04:50 | 0:04:52
ALL: Lord, have mercy. | 0:04:52 | 0:04:56
May the God of all
healing and forgiveness | 0:04:56 | 0:04:58
draw you to himself,
that you may behold | 0:04:58 | 0:05:01
the glory of his Son,
the Word made flesh, | 0:05:01 | 0:05:06
and be cleansed from
all your sins, through | 0:05:06 | 0:05:08
Jesus Christ our Lord. | 0:05:08 | 0:05:11
ALL: Amen. | 0:05:11 | 0:05:13

Let us pray. | 0:09:17 | 0:09:18
Almighty God, you have given
us your only-begotten | 0:09:18 | 0:09:22
Son to take our nature upon him
and as at this time to be born of | 0:09:22 | 0:09:26
a pure virgin. | 0:09:26 | 0:09:28
Grant that we, who
have been born again | 0:09:28 | 0:09:35
and made your children by adoption
and grace, | 0:09:35 | 0:09:39
may daily be renewed
by your Holy Spirit: | 0:09:39 | 0:09:44
through Jesus Christ your Son
our Lord, who is alive | 0:09:44 | 0:09:46
and reigns with you, in
the unity of the Holy | 0:09:46 | 0:09:49
Spirit, one God, now
and forever. | 0:09:49 | 0:09:50
ALL: Amen. | 0:09:50 | 0:09:53
A reading from the Book of Isaiah. | 0:10:03 | 0:10:05
The people who walked
in darkness have | 0:10:05 | 0:10:07
seen a great light. | 0:10:07 | 0:10:09
Those who lived in a
land of deep darkness, | 0:10:09 | 0:10:11
on them light has shined. | 0:10:11 | 0:10:14
For a child has been
born for us, | 0:10:14 | 0:10:16
a son given to us. | 0:10:16 | 0:10:20
Authority rests upon his
shoulders, | 0:10:20 | 0:10:23
and he is named
wonderful Counsellor, | 0:10:23 | 0:10:28
mighty God, everlasting
Father, Prince of Peace. | 0:10:28 | 0:10:32
His authority shall
grow continually, | 0:10:32 | 0:10:36
and there shall be endless
peace | 0:10:36 | 0:10:38 | |
for the throne
of David and his kingdom. | 0:10:38 | 0:10:43
He will establish and
uphold it with justice | 0:10:43 | 0:10:45
and with righteousness | 0:10:45 | 0:10:47
from this time
onwards and for evermore. | 0:10:47 | 0:10:51
The zeal of the Lord
of hosts will do this. | 0:10:51 | 0:10:56
This is the word of the Lord. | 0:10:56 | 0:10:59
ALL: Thanks be to God. | 0:10:59 | 0:11:02

was from the beginning, | 0:14:55 | 0:14:57

Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus
Christ, according to Luke. | 0:15:21 | 0:15:31
# Glory to you, O Lord. | 0:15:32 | 0:15:38
In those days a decree went out from
Emperor Augustus that all the world | 0:15:47 | 0:15:52
should be registered. | 0:15:52 | 0:15:54
This was the first registration
and was taken while Quirinius | 0:15:54 | 0:15:59
was governor of Syria. | 0:15:59 | 0:16:02
All went to their own
towns to be registered. | 0:16:02 | 0:16:06
Joseph also went from
the town of Nazareth | 0:16:06 | 0:16:08
in Galilee to Judea,
to the city of David called | 0:16:08 | 0:16:13
Bethlehem, because he
was descended from | 0:16:13 | 0:16:17
the house and family
of David. | 0:16:17 | 0:16:22
He went to be registered with Mary,
to whom he was engaged and who | 0:16:22 | 0:16:27
was expecting a child. | 0:16:27 | 0:16:31
While they were there,
the time came for | 0:16:31 | 0:16:33
her to deliver her child. | 0:16:33 | 0:16:37
And she gave birth to her firstborn
son and wrapped him in | 0:16:37 | 0:16:42
bands of cloth, and
laid him in a manger, | 0:16:42 | 0:16:46
because there was no place
for them in the inn. | 0:16:46 | 0:16:50
In that region there
were shepherds living | 0:16:50 | 0:16:54
in the fields, keeping
watch over their flock | 0:16:54 | 0:16:56
by night. | 0:16:56 | 0:17:01
Then an angel of the Lord
stood before them, | 0:17:01 | 0:17:04
and the glory of the Lord shone
around them, and they | 0:17:04 | 0:17:07
were terrified. | 0:17:07 | 0:17:11
But the angel said to
them, Do not be afraid! | 0:17:11 | 0:17:18
For see, I am bringing you good news
of great joy for all the people. | 0:17:18 | 0:17:24
To you is born this day
in the city of David | 0:17:24 | 0:17:29
a Saviour, who is
the Messiah, the Lord. | 0:17:29 | 0:17:35
This will be a sign
for you: you will find a | 0:17:35 | 0:17:37
child wrapped in bands
of cloth and lying | 0:17:37 | 0:17:40
in a manger. | 0:17:40 | 0:17:45
And suddenly there
was with the angel a | 0:17:45 | 0:17:50
multitude of the heavenly
host, praising | 0:17:50 | 0:17:51
God and saying, Glory to God
in the highest heaven, | 0:17:51 | 0:17:55
and on earth peace among
those whom he favours! | 0:17:55 | 0:18:05
This is the Gospel of the Lord. | 0:18:06 | 0:18:13
# Praise to you, O Christ. | 0:18:13 | 0:18:20
May I speak and may we hear, in the
name of the God of love that | 0:19:08 | 0:19:13
creators, redeems us and sustains
us. Amen. Please sit down. | 0:19:13 | 0:19:23
I'm not a parent myself. I have 12
wonderful godchildren. Not being a | 0:19:23 | 0:19:32
parent I am also slightly filled
with trepidation when I take a | 0:19:32 | 0:19:35
newborn baby in my arms. Trepidation
probably shared by the family will | 0:19:35 | 0:19:39
hand the baby over to me. I wonder
how Ali is feeling now? Ali gave | 0:19:39 | 0:19:45
birth to Theodora. And will, are
accurate, is the Father. Just a week | 0:19:45 | 0:19:52
ago. And here she is sleeping
peacefully in her mother's arms. See | 0:19:52 | 0:19:58
how long it lasts. Apparently there
is something hard-wired in our DNA | 0:19:58 | 0:20:08
about learning how to protect a
child, particularly a newborn one. | 0:20:08 | 0:20:14
Hold the head. For heaven's six,
don't drop them! But also, there | 0:20:14 | 0:20:22
must be deeper questions that arise
in our hearts when we take on | 0:20:22 | 0:20:25
parenting any kind. Are we grown up
enough to be responsible for this | 0:20:25 | 0:20:30
new life? Are we selfless enough,
patient enough, resilient enough, | 0:20:30 | 0:20:38
generous enough? Tireless enough? To
cope with the long sleepless nights | 0:20:38 | 0:20:46
that will lie ahead of us. Perhaps
that is part of what God is | 0:20:46 | 0:20:50
communicating to a us in the mystery
of Christmas. Perhaps it's an | 0:20:50 | 0:20:55
invitation to be grown up enough, to
see a new way of loving, a new way | 0:20:55 | 0:20:59
of receiving. It might be hard-wired
in our DNA to know how to protect a | 0:20:59 | 0:21:08
child, but it's possibly also
hard-wired in us to look for the | 0:21:08 | 0:21:12
most majestic, the most powerful,
the most mighty, and worship that. | 0:21:12 | 0:21:19
And yet, what God says to us on
Christmas morning is, are you grown | 0:21:19 | 0:21:25
up enough to be able to see me in
this, in all this vulnerable, | 0:21:25 | 0:21:32
fragile and, oh yes, nappy filling
vulnerability? Not in the mighty, | 0:21:32 | 0:21:40
not in the powerful, not in the
ground. But in all this tenderness, | 0:21:40 | 0:21:45
this vulnerability, this crying,
hunger and need. Can you hold God in | 0:21:45 | 0:21:52
your arms and on your heart? Because
that may be what we are being asked | 0:21:52 | 0:21:59
in the Christmas mystery. And of
course vulnerability and need | 0:21:59 | 0:22:03
doesn't just come in the form of a
human child. It comes in the form of | 0:22:03 | 0:22:10
any in our society, the most
vulnerable and most are made. So | 0:22:10 | 0:22:16
perhaps we are invited to refuse the
rhetoric of the publicly powerful | 0:22:16 | 0:22:20
who might invite us to jaw up our
boundaries and barriers against | 0:22:20 | 0:22:24
those we do not like or do not
trust. And instead to see a new kind | 0:22:24 | 0:22:29
of loving, a new kind of loving
Sharon us in this vulnerable, holy | 0:22:29 | 0:22:33
child. Because if we can see God in
this form, then we have to see God | 0:22:33 | 0:22:41
in the form of every human life. And
particularly in the form of those | 0:22:41 | 0:22:48
most in need and vulnerable. The
holy child of the stable 's birth | 0:22:48 | 0:22:56
well, a few days after his birth,
have to take to the roads, fleeing | 0:22:56 | 0:23:01
from Herod's murderous soldiers, to
find refuge in a foreign land. We're | 0:23:01 | 0:23:09
trying to fulfil a bit of an
ambition at All Saints to sponsor a | 0:23:09 | 0:23:13
refugee family from Syria in 2018.
Just one family. Part of the | 0:23:13 | 0:23:20
government allocation of 5000
families. It's not much. But it's a | 0:23:20 | 0:23:24
simple goal. How we make of a piece,
our worship and prayer week by week, | 0:23:24 | 0:23:32
with action, to try and make God's
world a better place in some small | 0:23:32 | 0:23:36
way. The child of the stables birth
turns the world upside down and | 0:23:36 | 0:23:45
says, see God in this vulnerable
need, to hold and protect. So can | 0:23:45 | 0:23:56
you see God in those vulnerable and
needy, who need our care and our | 0:23:56 | 0:24:01
love? Whatever way you can find to
care and love today, tomorrow. To | 0:24:01 | 0:24:10
hold them, nurture them and protect
them. | 0:24:10 | 0:24:13 | |
Amen. So we have a living family
here to celebrate. Many families. | 0:24:13 | 0:24:29
But also, if you know anything about
the Spanish or Latin American | 0:24:29 | 0:24:32
tradition of the Posada, a knitted
family of Mary and Joseph and the | 0:24:32 | 0:24:38
donkey have been travelling around
our Paris, going from family to | 0:24:38 | 0:24:42
family throughout Advent, spending a
night in houses, the family getting | 0:24:42 | 0:24:48
the chance to be innkeepers. The
Carmels have been the last family to | 0:24:48 | 0:24:54
receive the holy family of the
Posada. There are going to place | 0:24:54 | 0:24:58
them in their grip on Christmas
morning. | 0:24:58 | 0:25:00

in one God, | 0:29:54 | 0:29:56
Father, Son and Holy Spirit. | 0:29:56 | 0:30:00
Let us pray. | 0:30:05 | 0:30:08
Jesus, whose mother
was Mary: we pray | 0:30:14 | 0:30:18
for all those who celebrate
your birth today. | 0:30:18 | 0:30:21
Lord Jesus.
ALL: Hear our prayer. | 0:30:21 | 0:30:28
Jesus, born in the hours
of darkness, | 0:30:28 | 0:30:33
we pray for those who long
for light to dawn. | 0:30:33 | 0:30:36
Lord Jesus.
ALL: Hear our prayer. | 0:30:36 | 0:30:41
Jesus, cradled in
a manger: we pray for | 0:30:41 | 0:30:45
any who have no home
to call their own. | 0:30:45 | 0:30:49
Lord Jesus,
ALL: Hear our prayer. | 0:30:49 | 0:30:55
Jesus, worshipped by
shepherds and kings: | 0:30:55 | 0:30:57
we pray for those people
who are working today. | 0:30:57 | 0:31:00
Lord Jesus.
ALL: Hear our prayer. | 0:31:00 | 0:31:10
Jesus, our Emmanuel: we pray
for all whom we know | 0:31:13 | 0:31:15
to be in need of your strength
and consolation. | 0:31:15 | 0:31:22
For the sick and the
troubled, the lonely | 0:31:22 | 0:31:26
and bereft, for those
who are oppressed or | 0:31:26 | 0:31:28
imprisoned. | 0:31:28 | 0:31:31
Lord Jesus.
ALL: Hear our prayer. | 0:31:31 | 0:31:38
Merciful Father. | 0:31:38 | 0:31:39
ALL: Accept these
prayers for the sake of | 0:31:39 | 0:31:41
your Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ. | 0:31:41 | 0:31:42
Amen. | 0:31:42 | 0:31:46 | |
Unto us a child is born, | 0:32:03 | 0:32:07
unto us a son is given, and his name
shall be called | 0:32:07 | 0:32:10
the Prince of Peace. | 0:32:10 | 0:32:11
The peace of the Lord
be always with you. | 0:32:11 | 0:32:13
ALL: And also with you. | 0:32:13 | 0:32:15
Let us offer one another
a sign of peace. | 0:32:15 | 0:32:17
The Lord be with you.
ALL: And also with you. | 0:35:04 | 0:35:06
Lift up your hearts.
ALL: We lift them to the Lord. | 0:35:06 | 0:35:10
Let us give thanks
to the Lord our God. | 0:35:10 | 0:35:12
ALL: It is right to give
thanks and praise. | 0:35:12 | 0:35:17
All glory and honour be
yours always and everywhere, | 0:35:17 | 0:35:20
mighty creator, ever-living God. | 0:35:20 | 0:35:24
We give you thanks and
praise for your Son, | 0:35:24 | 0:35:27
our Saviour Jesus Christ: | 0:35:27 | 0:35:30
who for love of our fallen
race humbled himself, | 0:35:30 | 0:35:33
was born of the Virgin Mary
by the power of your Spirit, | 0:35:33 | 0:35:36
and lived as one of us. | 0:35:36 | 0:35:43
In this mystery of the Word made
flesh, | 0:35:43 | 0:35:45
you have caused his light
to shine in our hearts, | 0:35:45 | 0:35:48
to give knowledge of your glory
in the face of Jesus Christ. | 0:35:48 | 0:35:53
In him we see our God made visible | 0:35:53 | 0:35:57
and so are caught up in the love
of the God we cannot see. | 0:35:57 | 0:36:05
Therefore, with all the angels
of heaven, we lift our voices | 0:36:05 | 0:36:09
to proclaim the glory of your name
and sing our joyful hymn of praise. | 0:36:09 | 0:36:15

# Hosanna in excelsis | 0:37:51 | 0:37:56
Lord, you are holy indeed, | 0:38:04 | 0:38:05
the source of all holiness. | 0:38:05 | 0:38:07
Grant that by the power
of your Holy Spirit, | 0:38:07 | 0:38:09
and according to your holy will, | 0:38:09 | 0:38:13
these gifts of bread
and wine may be to us | 0:38:13 | 0:38:18
the body and blood
of our Lord Jesus Christ. | 0:38:18 | 0:38:21
Who, in the same night
that he was betrayed, | 0:38:21 | 0:38:23
took bread, and gave you thanks. | 0:38:23 | 0:38:25
He broke it, and gave it
to his disciples, saying: | 0:38:25 | 0:38:28
Take, eat. | 0:38:28 | 0:38:31
This is my body,
which is given for you. | 0:38:31 | 0:38:34
Do this in remembrance of me. | 0:38:34 | 0:38:38
In the same way, | 0:38:50 | 0:38:52
after supper he took the
cup, and gave you thanks. | 0:38:52 | 0:38:58
He gave it to them, saying:
Drink this, all of you. | 0:38:58 | 0:39:02
This is my blood
of the new covenant, | 0:39:02 | 0:39:05
which is shed for you,
and for many, | 0:39:05 | 0:39:07
for the forgiveness of sins. | 0:39:07 | 0:39:09
Do this, as often
as you drink it, | 0:39:09 | 0:39:11
in remembrance of me. | 0:39:11 | 0:39:14
Great is the mystery of faith. | 0:39:27 | 0:39:36
# Christ has died, Christ is risen, | 0:39:36 | 0:39:40
# Christ will come again #. | 0:39:40 | 0:39:44
And so, Father, calling
to mind his death | 0:39:44 | 0:39:48
on the cross, his
perfect sacrifice | 0:39:48 | 0:39:51
made once for the sins
of the whole world: | 0:39:51 | 0:39:53
rejoicing in his mighty
resurrection | 0:39:53 | 0:39:55
and glorious ascension, | 0:39:55 | 0:39:58
and looking for his
coming in glory, | 0:39:58 | 0:40:00
we celebrate this
memorial of our redemption. | 0:40:00 | 0:40:05
As we offer you this
our sacrifice of praise | 0:40:05 | 0:40:08
and thanksgiving, | 0:40:08 | 0:40:12
we bring before you this
bread and this cup: | 0:40:12 | 0:40:15
and we thank
you for counting us worthy | 0:40:15 | 0:40:16
to stand in your
presence and serve you. | 0:40:16 | 0:40:18
Send the Holy Spirit
on your people | 0:40:18 | 0:40:22
all who | 0:40:22 | 0:40:24
and gather into one in
your kingdom | 0:40:24 | 0:40:27
all who share this one bread
and one cup: so that | 0:40:27 | 0:40:29
we, in the company
of all the saints, may | 0:40:29 | 0:40:32
praise and glorify you for ever: | 0:40:32 | 0:40:35
through Jesus Christ
our Lord, by whom, | 0:40:35 | 0:40:38
and with whom, and in
whom, in the unity | 0:40:38 | 0:40:40
of the Holy Spirit,
all honour and glory be | 0:40:40 | 0:40:44
yours, almighty Father,
for ever and ever. | 0:40:44 | 0:40:48
ALL: Amen. | 0:40:48 | 0:40:51
Let us pray in confidence
as our Saviour taught us. | 0:41:18 | 0:41:23
Our Father, who are in heaven,
hallowed be thy name, | 0:41:23 | 0:41:27
thy kingdom come,
thy will be done | 0:41:27 | 0:41:30
on earth as it is in heaven. | 0:41:30 | 0:41:33
Give us this day our daily bread,
and forgive us our trespasses, | 0:41:33 | 0:41:38
as we forgive those
who trespass against us. | 0:41:38 | 0:41:42
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil. | 0:41:42 | 0:41:46
For thine is the kingdom,
the power and the glory, | 0:41:46 | 0:41:50
for ever and ever. | 0:41:50 | 0:41:53
Amen. | 0:41:53 | 0:41:56 | |
We break this bread to share
in the body of Christ. | 0:41:56 | 0:42:02
ALL: Though we are many,
we are one body, | 0:42:02 | 0:42:06
because we all share in one bread. | 0:42:06 | 0:42:10
# Lord, I am not worthy
to receive you | 0:42:28 | 0:42:37
# But only say the word
and I shall be healed | 0:42:37 | 0:42:46
# Jesus is the Lamb of God | 0:42:46 | 0:42:53
# Who takes away
the sins of the world | 0:42:53 | 0:43:03
# But only say the word
and I shall be healed | 0:43:04 | 0:43:09
# Happy are those who are
called to his supper #. | 0:43:09 | 0:43:16
# Lord, I am not worthy
to receive you | 0:43:18 | 0:43:22
# But only say the word
and I shall be healed | 0:43:22 | 0:43:32
The gifts of God for
the people of God. | 0:43:37 | 0:43:42
ALL: Jesus Christ is holy,
Jesus Christ is Lord, | 0:43:42 | 0:43:45
to the glory of God the Father. | 0:43:45 | 0:43:49

# No crying He makes | 0:47:54 | 0:47:59
# I love Thee, Lord Jesus | 0:47:59 | 0:48:04
# Look down from the sky | 0:48:04 | 0:48:09

Let us prey. | 0:51:18 | 0:51:19
God our Father, whose
Word has come among us | 0:51:30 | 0:51:32
in the Holy Child of Bethlehem:
may the light of faith | 0:51:32 | 0:51:35
illumine our hearts and shine
in our words and deeds, | 0:51:35 | 0:51:37
through him who is Christ the Lord. | 0:51:37 | 0:51:40
ALL: Amen. | 0:51:40 | 0:51:42
Son of Mary, Son of God,
may we who have joined | 0:51:42 | 0:51:45
the worship of the angels never lose
that heavenly vision. | 0:51:45 | 0:51:47
May we who, like the shepherds,
have seen in your birth | 0:51:47 | 0:51:50
a new kind of love, show that love
in our lives, to your | 0:51:50 | 0:51:58
praise and glory forever and ever. | 0:51:58 | 0:52:04
Amen. | 0:52:04 | 0:52:07 | |
May the joy of the angels,
the eagerness of the shepherds: | 0:56:37 | 0:56:41
the perseverance of the wise men,
the obedience of Mary and Joseph, | 0:56:41 | 0:56:47
and the peace of the Christ child,
be yours this Christmas: | 0:56:47 | 0:56:52
and the blessing of God Almighty,
the Father, the Son, | 0:56:52 | 0:56:55
and the Holy Spirit,
be among you, and remain | 0:56:55 | 0:56:59
with you always. | 0:56:59 | 0:57:02
ALL: Amen. | 0:57:02 | 0:57:04
Go in peace to love
and serve the Lord. | 0:57:04 | 0:57:07
ALL: In the name of Christ. | 0:57:07 | 0:57:09
Amen. | 0:57:09 | 0:57:14 | |
