-The annual Eisteddfod circuit

-begins here, in Pencoed...

-..on the Coleg Penybont campus,

-a stone's throw from the M4.

-This year, it's home

-to Europe's largest youth festival.

-The crowds will flow here, like

-the Ogmore, the Taff and the Ely.

-It will be as busy

-as a fairground here next week.

-Preparations for this festival

-started months ago...

-..and we'll have a taste

-of the local activities tonight.

-We start in Maesteg,

-in Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Llangynwyd.

-Three local schools will compete

-in the junior choir competition.

-Llangynwyd, Llanhari and Garth Olwg.

-I like the chosen piece

-for the choir.

-It depicts this area perfectly.

-We're the underdogs

-We've put a lot of effort

-into our rehearsals.

-We've pushed ourselves a lot.

-I think we could reach the main

-stage in the Eisteddfod...

-has never competed before.

-Our teacher, Teilo Evans,

-has been incredible.

-He's young and really enthusiastic.

-They're eager, they want to learn.

-By now, they are excited to compete.

-They know the piece very well

-and they just want to compete now.

-This is Llanhari's first time in the

-Eisteddfod in any dance competition.

-We trained the girls,

-they weren't trained by teachers.

-It's great seeing them

-perform our moves.

-It's the most dangerous move.

-Every time I go up,

-I feel really nervous.

-Once it's over, I'm fine. It's fun.

-We're under a lot of pressure to

-make sure that everything's perfect.

-I'm looking forward to meeting local

-people who don't speak Welsh...

-..enjoying possibly their

-first visit to the Eisteddfod.

-Eisteddfod competitions.

-Between the hip hops, street and

-disco, the stage will be bouncing.

-Hosting an Eisteddfod

-can energise the locality.

-It can create an impression and it

-can inspire people to learn Welsh.

-Many who have,

-and are learning Welsh...

-..are more than ready to contribute.

-I've been learning Welsh

-since January. It's a lot of fun.

-We responded to an advert

-for people...

-..wanting to learn

-conversational Welsh...

-..to show how easy it was

-to pick it up.

-We could then go to the Eisteddfod

-and talk to people.

-The resources are there, the people

-are there, it's fun to learn.

-People can be freaked out

-about Welsh and mutations.

-We're all volunteering in the

-Eisteddfod making teas and coffees.

-It'll be quite a bit of fun.

-I enjoy learning Welsh. I'm looking

-forward to attending the pavilion...

-..and welcoming the Eisteddfod.

-for coffee, food and a chat.

-..I wrote a book

-and my partner drew the pictures.

-Cynwyd the dog visits

-different places in Mid Glamorgan.

-It's a way of welcoming people

-what they have on their doorstep.

-and many ice cream parlours...

-of the primary school show.

-It's about two adversaries

-travelling from Bardi, Italy...

-to the South Wales Valleys.

-They start their own businesses,

-fall in love and marry in Bardi.

-There are over 130 children

-in the show.

-The rehearsals are great

-but they can be quite bonkers.

-I've learnt some Italian words.

-The longest I've learnt

-is felicitazione.

-We say it over and over and over.

-They're excited. They're seeing

-everything fit into place.

-We started rehearsing

-around January, February.

-We're running the show now.

-The costumes and props have come in.

-They're very excited

-which helps them...

-..as we try and lift the show

-onto its feet.

-We're all looking forward to it.

-On the day, we'll all know our

-the Maid of Cefn Ydfa.

-My character, Ann Thomas, she's just

-returned from her education in Bath.

-She's part of a wealthy family.

-She returns home and falls in love

-with stonemason Wil Hopcyn.

-Society at the time forbids them

-to be together.

-Unfortunately, her decision

-has serious implications.

-To see that hatred in your faces.

-You hate them

-because they look down upon you.

-In this story, you have

-the roots of the folk song...

-..Bugeilio'r Gwenith Gwyn.

-That's a melody

-that runs through the show.

-Of course, there are fresh songs

-and some new characters.

-I've reached Sker where harpist

-Thomas Evans had his heart broken...

-Elizabeth Williams from Sker House.

-I used to come here with my parents.

-The miners' eisteddfod here in 1937

-attracted worldwide attention.

-Paul Robeson sang

-to lift the miners' spirits.

-His voice could be heard all around.

-People still talk about that moment.

-Where better to finish

-than in Pontypridd...

-..home of Evan James

-who wrote Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau.

-The anthem came to James James as

-he walked along the Rhondda river.

-The spirit of the language

-to socialise in Welsh.

-..a competition for eight voices.

-We have half a dozen singers.

-Over the years, they've learnt

-more about Welsh history...

-..by singing cerdd dant songs

-than they have otherwise.

-The cerdd dant skill is different to

-all others. It's very interesting.

-We might get some success,

-I don't know.

-What's important is taking part.

-That's it. It's coming.

-There are three new competitions

-for cerdd dant singers.

-One other important change is the

-new time for the daily ceremonies...

-Friday is Crowning day.

-This year, a competition was held

-for local primary schools...

-..to create a design for the crown.

-I looked on line to see designs

-of crowns over the years.

-I combined them all

-and tried to add them all up...

-..into one crown.

-A castle, bridge, dragon, Mistar

-Urdd and everything like that...

-..things that you'd find

-around Bridgend.

-I think it's the best one

-that's ever been!

-When I'll see someone wearing

-the crown, I'll be very proud...

-..because I designed it.

-I want to wear a crown...

-..because I want to be

-a princess when I grow up.

-Without doubt,

-primary schools from across Wales...

-..will be hard at work

-with their last-minute rehearsals.

-One of those is Ysgol Cynwyd Sant.

-The story behind

-our creative dance...

-..is astronauts landing on the moon.

-As they discover new things...

-..little green men appear.

-They copy how they walk

-before they leave the moon.

-Wherever you look,

-something interesting will happen.

-I think the judges will agree

-it's a good dance.

-I think we'll be in the top three.

-I hope we win.
