U2 Live - Part 1 Glastonbury

This programme contains some strong strong language and scenes of

language., Glastonbury, I'm not strong in this area. Super. Proud.

Epic. Unbelievable. Good music. That is two words. The first word

that comes into my mind when I hear Glastonbury is, probably, mud.

Mud. Mud. Chocolate. Veggie burger. Hippies. Home, isn't it. Three

Hello you. Welcome to Glastonbury 2011. Can't help noticing the

weather is somewhat inClemant. concerned I've been edged in a more

slow fashion, as we have been getting ready closer to this

enormous drip. It's part of my contract. People are sending me a

messagage. Brace yourself. Spirits are high on Day One. We will bring

you all the action here. From various paints around the site.

Tonnes of stages and tonnes of bands to watch. You can safe in the

knowledge that your couch is the most comfortable place to be,

certainly this evening. We will take the entire U2 set across BBC

Two and BBC Four. Thank you. I don't know about the short straw.

I'm in this treehouse at the top of the site. King of the Hill,

surveying all the scene here. The massive expanse of Glastonbury. A

city the size of Bath and basking under a cloud of drizzle. That

hasn't dampened spirits. There has been a smell of manure from the cow

shed. This is the best advantage point. It's a marvellous view. You

can see the pyramid Stage. I have to come up through that bring you

this festa. I didn't really. When I finish this tiny link I will go

backstage. Bono is here. The back has been bolstered. We are reved

for U2, in the pit is Jo Whiley. It's raining, what do you know? A

lot! The things you do for TV for the love of a festival and a good

band. I'm at the front of the pyramid Stage. In that direction

there are people as far as the eye can see. There are flags everywhere.

It's a beautiful, beautiful site. Behind me, waiting in the wings is

a band about to walk out on stage and to get a great response when

they walk out here. It's been a long time coming. U2 coming up on

the Pyramid Stage very shortly. Time to put my hood up, I think.

The Vaccines sounding good. That was from their debut album. That is

one of the many great bands that have performed across the stages

braving the weather. It's been very exciting. Jimmy Cliff has been

bringing the sunshine. I saw Morrissey. Fleet Foxes. Wu-Tang

clan had people doing, "W's" in the world. We played it out. They said

it was fine much I played one song. Over here behind us we have live

music early on. A band who released their third album. Performing live

Noah And The Whale, Tonight's The Kind Of Night. Lovely stuff. The

band who are headlining the Pyramid Stage a long road to get here. They

were supposed to headline last year. Due to a bit of a back, a bit of a

back, they couldn't do it. They are here this year, that is for sure. I

have seen a couple of them around. That is official. You will get the

entire show across BBC Two and BBC The 27 year Glastonbury rumour has

finally come true. Ever since becoming Dublin's biggest export,

U2 have been an obvious match for the world's greatest musical

festival. Year-on-year their fans hopes have been dashed. Last year

they came all so close. It still wasn't to be. Tonight, Bono, Larry,

Adam and the Edge will take to the Pyramid Stage with a quarter of a

century's expectation weighing an their shoulders. If any band can

rise to the occasion, this one can. The world's biggest rock band

started out on the tough streets on the north side of Dublin. Riding

the wave of post-punk rebel punk they emerged at the dawn of the 0's

with a unique brand of rousing anthems. Songs about Christianity,

war and the Irish Troubles set the tone for U2's moral message. All

this with great performances established them them in England

and America. America would define the next stage in the U2 story. The

band wrote a two album love letter # Where the streets have no name...

That band photo in the The Joshua Tree the duet B.B. King and playing

havoc with LA traffic drove them to the top of the charts as they

became the biggest band on earth. By the '90s, mega band U2 were

playing the world's largest stadiums. Defined as much with

Bono's passion for politics as they were by Edge's guitar sounds. The

band reinvented their image and their sound with the more

experimental albums, Achtung Baby and zoo Europa. They performed on

rooftops and moving vehicles. No strange erts to the odd slow Balad

the likes of With Or Without You have made sure they are high up in

the wedding first dance charts too. So, it seems whatever the event,

whatever the scale, U2 are the rock band for the job. Glastonbury's no

exception. I was there last summer at Glastonbury, to do a bit of a

recce. Got up there with Mews, I had a fantastic time much we are so

excited, just to be part of it is such an exciting thing for us. This

is the best festival in the world. It has been a long time coming,

finally, tonight, Worthy Farm There you go. The story of U2

condensed. It's getsing very exciting. Whether you love love the

headline act or not at a festival like this, there is a great

euphoria that the biggest band in the world, probably, is here, right

now. Jo is in the pits with Space Odyssey Blairing out from the
