Arcade Fire Glastonbury

This programme contains some strong language and scenes of repetitive

flashing images. Good evening and welcome to

Glastonbury 2014, the Friday night. We've got hours of entertainment for

you. We've got some acoustic performances. Some of the highlights

of the Other Stages. Metronomy, but it is about the headliners tonight

on the Pyramid Stage. The headliners at Glastonbury you could almost say

they don't matter, because the festival sells out before they

announce the headliners. Tonight's headliner was Arcade Fire. They are

a band rather like Mumford Sons whose rise seems so to have been

meteoric. When they come and play they bring such a spectacle. That's

what you are going to enjoy in a minute. It is like a carnival. Just

let it wash over you. Their rise seems to have been speedy. Here's

the story of how Arcade Fire became a headlining act.

From a Canadian suburb to the heady heights of stadiums around the world

Arcade Fire have been whipping crowds into a frenzy for ten years.

Are the front man formed the group after moving to Montreal. They burst

on to the seen with their debut album Funeral in 2004. This indie

record became a smash and soon they were sharing the stage with Bowie.

We come from a pretty DIY more punk background, so we don't take any of

it for granted. In 2007 their Glastonbury tale begins. Bathed in

neon they had a storming set on the Other Stage. When we played

Glastonbury last time we flew in to the airport and hailed a cab and

said Glastonbury, please. He I remember playing Wake Up at

Glastonbury. It has become anthemic for people, where if something

happened this their lives, and you get that energy. Their third

offering a began when he saw a picture of his old neighbourhood. It

ended with a number 1. Fast forward a few years and shrounded in a Vale

of successy and gigs billed as the reflectors and their latest album

was revealed. Hailing back to their crowd-mingling beginnings they made

grand entrances to gigs sporting their now infamous bobble heads.

Wearing the giant masks is terrifying. You can only see out the

nostrils and you can't hear anything. It's the opposite of

therapeutic. But tonight it is all about one triangle-shaped structure

and one of the hottest bands in the world now. One of the rules of our

band is you can't perform in wellies and you can't be wearing a festival

Glastonbury. What are your first impressions? It is pretty

spectacular. The scale of it is quite hard to grasp at first. A

great way to be spending a Friday night. That was brilliant. Thank

M.I.A. Puts on a brilliant show. So compelling to watch. She headlined

earlier tonight. We are live from Glastonbury. It is very nice to be

here. It is a great way to spend an evening. I hope you're enjoying

everything. We have lots more to come, Metronomy, and now one of the

great things we we do these shows is we get to capture the excitement of

a band when they've finished. We should have Lauren with Arcade Fire.

I'm here in the Treehouse with Arcade Fire. That was an incredible

performance. I feel tired. We went back to Medieval England, saw all of

humanity at the same time. It was incredible. There were people

lighting signal flares. It was Medieval, old school carnival,

right? It really had that feel to it. You said on stage that you've

done some amazing things in this band but that was probably the best

experience. Was that just you in the moment or is this a huge deal for

you? We've never been in front of a crowd like that. It rel felt for a

band that has never had a had a proper hit single, to have that many

people singing a song that they've given to your younger brother and

hearing that many people sing Wake Up, a powerful experience. And how

about the prep for this? The build-up to this has been a pretty

huge thing. What's the anticipation of tonight been like for you? We've

been playing a lot of shows that have been really fun. And we were

like, let's play another show that's really fun. Let's play the biggest

party. I read a great quote recently, she said the shows aren't

a recital, they are a communal experience. How does it translate

with a crowd of that size? It is a vast amount of people. How do you

get everybody engaged? Signal flares really help. A couple of guys at the

back had signal flares and it lit up the whole area. It really gave a

sense of depth and scale. Is that a thing that people normally do at

Glastonbury? It is, people advise against it on

health and safety basis. Last time it happened was in Scotland and

security stopped it. It was dangerous. Maybe they knew something

we didn't. It does do something to you standing in front of that size

of a crowd. It's a really special night. How did you put this set list

together? How did you decide what you are going to play tonight? I

know you've been doing region-specific covers Richard was

up until 4.30am doing a best of Glastonbury sound clash at the end.

That was brilliant. We kind of change it from night to night and we

kind of instinctively went with what's been working. Reflektor tends

to work at the front. Reflektor makes people dance and it sets the

tone for everything. We thought, let's start with that. That's a good

party song. This has been a great year for you guys and you've done

some amazing things to promote the new album, Reflektor. But it is ten

years since the debut album. Does it feel like a decade? It doesn't feel

like a decade, but something happened over the last ten years,

because that record was not like a hit record by any Metrix, and yet to

see that many people know the songs that well, like older brothers have

given it to their younger brothers. To me that's the greatest compliment

in the world. Just people giving each other music, sharing it with

your friends. That's what it is all about. That's how I felt about the

Pixies or nirvana or anything that was important to me as a kid. That's

your goal when you are in a band. It is fantastic to see you guys up

there with all the toys at your disposal. Having the time of your

lives. Where do you go from here? What's next? Dublin. We are playing

a pretty big snow in Dublin in two days. We've never been a

goal-orientated band. We never had a white board that said Glastonbury,

number one album, play Saturday Night Live. Our goals have always

been more musical, like, write a better song, do something with

production that's different. It doesn't feel that different for us.

It feels like we are in control of our own destiny. We are able to

chose what projects we want to do. It feels like an exciting time.

There's no like, what do we do that's bigger? We don't want to be

bigger or smaller. It is not about topping it that way. We haven't

changed. Congratulations again on such a wonderful headline show.

a party. She is in an area called Block 9 and we are going over to her

live right now. Hi Gemma. Wow! What can I say? The place at Glastonbury

where your wildest dreams and nightmares become reality, it is

pretty grey out here. Block 9 in the midst of it all a post-apocalyptic

bonanza. Earlier the One Show was here. They were here with Euan

Thomas and this is what happened. With all due respect, at the moment,

where are we? It is bits and peepses everywhere. What is it going to be?

This will be the download. Over here is the New York traffic lights with

a fully operational Walk, Don't Walk signs. And the dancers. Do you think

this will be done for Wednesday? It is a giant jigsaw puzzle. But in

your mind it is all finished? In my mind we are downtown New York 1989.

And a 50-foot high set is under construction. Dedicated to music

closer to home, it is called the London Underground. That's a serious

amount of scaffolding. You can't tell now but this becomes a replica

of an East London tower block. And the wow factor is our Crocked tube.

This one only weighs one tonne and it is made out of plywood. And this

goes up there? Up to the third floor, like it's been smashed

through the building. I've been training recently. Shall we do it? A

0-tonne crane lifts it on to the scaffolding. Hard hat on, highs

advise, gloves, but Alex has loads more kit than me. Slowly by surely

the carriage rises into position. That's a tonne of Tube train hanging

right there. Not exactly in my hands but I feel responsible. It's up

there. It looks good? Really happy. Went very smoothly. They are

securing it now. I have got a bit of a sweat on. I think you at least owe

me a cup of tea. A mammoth operation takes place, with car penters and

It's my first time at Glastonbury. I've got to say I'm truly blown away

by the venues here at Block 9. If you thought this place was mud,

wellies and bands, think again. There's so much more to it than

Back to celebrity spotting. Why is Noel Gallagher here? I heard a

rumour he might be scouting the place out for a how much... Headline

slot? That is a totally unfounded rumour. That didn't come from us. I

can't think who he would be going on stage with. Dolly! Dolly and Noel!

Bradley Cooper turned up in a helicopter with Lars from Metallica.

They are best mates apparently. It was when the rain was pouring down.

People were huddled in tents and this lone figure was standing there.

It looked like Bradley Cooper. It is! The most unlikely spotting of a

Hollywood star at Glastonbury. Very strange.

One of the good things about doing this show is we have these amazing

cabaret performers. We are now going to see Sylvia in action. She was

playing in the Circus Field earlier. She's going to get her hoops out and

show us what she can do with them. APPLAUSE

Wow! Seriously impressive. She can do the splits and hula hoop with her

knows! I was asking earlier if you have ever hula hooped. I have, but

not with my knees or ankles and I wasn't smiling at the time. Sylvia,
