This programme contains some strong language and scenes of repetitive

:00:24.:00:30.

flashing images. Good evening and welcome to

:00:31.:00:53.

Glastonbury 2014, the Friday night. We've got hours of entertainment for

:00:54.:00:59.

you. We've got some acoustic performances. Some of the highlights

:01:00.:01:05.

of the Other Stages. Metronomy, but it is about the headliners tonight

:01:06.:01:13.

on the Pyramid Stage. The headliners at Glastonbury you could almost say

:01:14.:01:20.

they don't matter, because the festival sells out before they

:01:21.:01:26.

announce the headliners. Tonight's headliner was Arcade Fire. They are

:01:27.:01:35.

a band rather like Mumford Sons whose rise seems so to have been

:01:36.:01:43.

meteoric. When they come and play they bring such a spectacle. That's

:01:44.:01:52.

what you are going to enjoy in a minute. It is like a carnival. Just

:01:53.:01:57.

let it wash over you. Their rise seems to have been speedy. Here's

:01:58.:02:04.

the story of how Arcade Fire became a headlining act.

:02:05.:02:08.

From a Canadian suburb to the heady heights of stadiums around the world

:02:09.:02:15.

Arcade Fire have been whipping crowds into a frenzy for ten years.

:02:16.:02:22.

Are the front man formed the group after moving to Montreal. They burst

:02:23.:02:27.

on to the seen with their debut album Funeral in 2004. This indie

:02:28.:02:33.

record became a smash and soon they were sharing the stage with Bowie.

:02:34.:02:41.

We come from a pretty DIY more punk background, so we don't take any of

:02:42.:02:48.

it for granted. In 2007 their Glastonbury tale begins. Bathed in

:02:49.:02:56.

neon they had a storming set on the Other Stage. When we played

:02:57.:03:04.

Glastonbury last time we flew in to the airport and hailed a cab and

:03:05.:03:08.

said Glastonbury, please. He I remember playing Wake Up at

:03:09.:03:19.

Glastonbury. It has become anthemic for people, where if something

:03:20.:03:26.

happened this their lives, and you get that energy. Their third

:03:27.:03:34.

offering a began when he saw a picture of his old neighbourhood. It

:03:35.:03:41.

ended with a number 1. Fast forward a few years and shrounded in a Vale

:03:42.:03:47.

of successy and gigs billed as the reflectors and their latest album

:03:48.:03:52.

was revealed. Hailing back to their crowd-mingling beginnings they made

:03:53.:03:55.

grand entrances to gigs sporting their now infamous bobble heads.

:03:56.:03:58.

Wearing the giant masks is terrifying. You can only see out the

:03:59.:04:03.

nostrils and you can't hear anything. It's the opposite of

:04:04.:04:08.

therapeutic. But tonight it is all about one triangle-shaped structure

:04:09.:04:14.

and one of the hottest bands in the world now. One of the rules of our

:04:15.:04:23.

band is you can't perform in wellies and you can't be wearing a festival

:04:24.:04:26.

tag when you perform. # Entre les voyants,

:04:27.:05:35.

les vivants et les morts # It's just a Reflektor

:05:36.:05:59.

(It's just a Reflektor) # It's just a Reflektor

:06:00.:06:16.

(It's just a Reflektor) # We fell in love

:06:17.:06:24.

when I was nineteen # Entre les voyants,

:06:25.:06:37.

les vivants et les morts # It's just a Reflektor

:06:38.:06:50.

(It's just a Reflektor) # It's just a Reflektor

:06:51.:07:06.

(It's just a Reflektor) # It's just a reflection

:07:07.:07:50.

# It's just a Reflektor (It's just a Reflektor)

:07:51.:08:05.

# It's just a reflection of a reflection

:08:06.:08:07.

# It's just a reflection of a reflection

:08:08.:08:21.

# I thought I found a way to enter

:08:22.:09:05.

# It's just a Reflektor (It's just a Reflektor)

:09:06.:09:08.

# It's just a Reflektor (It's just a Reflektor)

:09:09.:09:43.

# Thought you would bring me to the resurrector

:09:44.:09:45.

# Turns out it was just a Reflektor (It's just a Reflektor)

:09:46.:09:51.

# Thought you would bring to me the resurrector

:09:52.:09:53.

# Turns out it was just a Reflektor (It's just a Reflektor)

:09:54.:10:00.

# Thought you would bring to me the ressurector

:10:01.:10:02.

# Turns out it was just a Reflektor (It's just a Reflektor)

:10:03.:10:04.

# Will I see you on the other side?

:10:05.:11:06.

We are so happy to be here, Glastonbury.

:11:07.:15:53.

# I woke up with the power out # Not really somethin to shout about

:15:54.:16:00.

# Ice has covered up my parents' hands

:16:01.:16:02.

# I went out to find some light

:16:03.:16:16.

# Kids are swingin' from the power lines

:16:17.:16:18.

# Nobody's home, so nobody minds

:16:19.:16:24.

# Neighbours all were shouting that they found the light

:16:25.:16:28.

# Shadows jumpin' all over my walls

:16:29.:16:33.

# Some of them big, some of them small

:16:34.:16:39.

# I went out to pick a fight with anyone

:16:40.:16:47.

# Ice has covered up my parents' eyes

:16:48.:17:09.

# Don't know how to see, don't know how to cry

:17:10.:17:15.

# And the power's out in the heart of man

:17:16.:18:16.

# Just light a candle for the kids # Jesus Christ, don't keep it hid!

:18:17.:18:53.

# And the power's out in the heart of man

:18:54.:19:30.

# And there's something wrong in the heart of man

:19:31.:19:46.

# Scare your son and scare your daughter

:19:47.:22:41.

# Every time you close your eyes, lies, lies!

:22:42.:23:32.

# People try and hide the light underneath the covers

:23:33.:23:46.

# Underneath the covers # Come on, hide your lovers

:23:47.:23:51.

# Underneath the covers # Hidin' from your brothers

:23:52.:23:55.

# Underneath the covers # Come on, hide your lovers

:23:56.:24:03.

# Scare your son, scare your daughter

:24:04.:24:29.

# Now here's the sun, it's all right!

:24:30.:24:31.

# Scare your son, scare your daughter

:24:32.:24:37.

# Now here's the moon, it's all right!

:24:38.:24:51.

# But every time you close your eyes, lies, lies!

:24:52.:24:54.

lies, lies! lies, lies!

:24:55.:25:32.

# You're the one that they used to hate

:25:33.:27:10.

# You're my Joan of Arc # Joan of Arc

:27:11.:27:29.

# You're my Joan of Arc # You had a vision they couldn't see

:27:30.:27:30.

# But everything that you said would happen

:27:31.:27:37.

# And they're the ones that put you down

:27:38.:27:42.

# But I'm the one that will follow you

:27:43.:27:49.

# You're my Joan of Arc # Tell the boys their time is

:27:50.:27:52.

through # Now they tell you that you're

:27:53.:27:59.

their muse # And they lit the fire?

:28:00.:28:24.

called your name # When the voices came, you cut your

:28:25.:28:33.

hair # Tell the boys their time is

:28:34.:28:38.

through # Alors tu dis que je suis

:28:39.:28:52.

une sainte # Mais ce n'est pas moi

:28:53.:29:37.

# J'entends des voix # Mais ce n'est pas moi

:29:38.:29:42.

# Je ne suis pas Jeanne d'Arc # And if you shoot you better hit

:29:43.:29:47.

your mark # And if you shoot you better hit

:29:48.:29:51.

# My Joan of Arc (Jeanne d'Arc) # Tell the boys their time is

:29:52.:29:54.

through # Joan of Arc (Jeanne d'Arc)

:29:55.:29:59.

# Tell the boys I'll follow you # Joan of Arc (Jeanne d'Arc)

:30:00.:30:05.

# When the boys are over you # I'll follow you

:30:06.:30:11.

# Tell the boys I'll follow you # First they love you, then they

:30:12.:30:39.

kill you # Then they love you again

:30:40.:31:05.

kill you We are so grateful

:31:06.:31:32.

and honoured to be here. # Grab your mother's keys

:31:33.:32:08.

we're leavin' # I saw you standing on the opposite

:32:09.:32:46.

shore # But by the time the first bombs

:32:47.:33:15.

fell # But in my dreams we're still

:33:16.:33:18.

screamin' # And all of the walls that they

:33:19.:33:59.

built in the '70s finally fall # And all of the houses they built

:34:00.:34:18.

in the '70s finally fall # Why I want a daughter while I'm

:34:19.:34:20.

still young # But if it's too much to ask

:34:21.:35:08.

It's too much to ask # In the parking lot we're still

:35:09.:35:24.

waiting # So move your feet from hot

:35:25.:35:37.

pavement and into the grass # So move your feet from hot

:35:38.:35:39.

pavement and into the grass # In my dreams we're still

:35:40.:36:50.

# If I could have the time back, I would love to waste it again

:36:51.:38:02.

and again and again in a field with my friends.

:38:03.:38:05.

# Like the kids in art school said they would

:38:06.:39:33.

# You say, "Can we still be friends?"

:39:34.:39:39.

# Cos it's better than being alone

:39:40.:40:18.

# Saying please come out with us tonight

:40:19.:40:46.

# Like the kids in art school said they would

:40:47.:41:05.

# You say, "Can we still be friends?"

:41:06.:41:17.

# Than live in the shadows of your song

:41:18.:42:20.

We are Arcade Fire and we are from Montreal.

:42:21.:43:31.

# And if the snow buries my, my neighborhood

:43:32.:44:22.

# Then I'll dig a tunnel from my window to yours

:44:23.:44:36.

# And meet me in the middle, the middle of the town

:44:37.:45:06.

# And since there's no-one else around

:45:07.:45:11.

# We let our hair grow long and forget all we used to know

:45:12.:45:19.

# Then our skin gets thicker from living out in the snow

:45:20.:45:26.

# You change all the lead, sleeping in my head

:45:27.:45:32.

# As the day grows dim I hear you sing a golden hymn

:45:33.:45:54.

# But we forgot all the names that the names we used to know

:45:55.:46:13.

# And spread the ashes of the colours over this heart of mine

:46:14.:48:11.

Everyone of us is born special and unique,

:48:12.:48:38.

and somewhere along the way, someone tries to get us to be the same.

:48:39.:48:41.

I just want to say, however you were born, you are perfect, or I?

:48:42.:48:44.

# Walk in a room, stare out through you

:48:45.:49:21.

# Daddy it's true, I'm different from you

:49:22.:49:38.

# But tell me why they treat me like this?

:49:39.:49:43.

# You turn away, what could I say # Not the first betrayed by a kiss

:49:44.:49:51.

# They're staring at you # When you walk in a room# Turn on

:49:52.:50:00.

# Just let us through # Or just let us through

:50:01.:50:26.

# Down on your knees # Begging us please

:50:27.:50:29.

# Daddy, it's fine, I'm used to them now

:50:30.:50:37.

# But tell me why they treat me like this?

:50:38.:50:40.

# Maybe it's true # They're staring at you

:50:41.:51:01.

# Or just let us through # Just let us through

:51:02.:51:29.

# Let them stare # That's all right with you

:51:30.:51:39.

# But lose myself if it turn away from you

:51:40.:51:47.

# Daddy told him to wait # Mother, I'm so scared

:51:48.:51:54.

# But will you watch us drown? # You know that they will

:51:55.:52:06.

# What are you so afraid to lose? # But will you watch us drown?

:52:07.:52:34.

# Praying that we don't exist # Begging us please

:52:35.:52:50.

# Praying that we don't exist # Begging us please

:52:51.:53:14.

# My body is a cage that keeps me from dancing

:53:15.:54:39.

# With the one I love but my mind holds the key

:54:40.:54:46.

# I'm standing on a stage of fear and self-doubt

:54:47.:54:53.

# It's a hollow play but they'll clap anyway

:54:54.:55:30.

# Same old city with a different name

:55:31.:55:40.

# I don't know why, but I know I can't stay

:55:41.:55:55.

# There's a weight that's pressing down

:55:56.:55:59.

# Late at night you can hear the sound

:56:00.:56:04.

# Even the noise you make when you sleep

:56:05.:56:09.

# They know my name cos I told it to them

:56:10.:56:17.

# But they don't know where and they don't know when

:56:18.:56:22.

# It's coming when it's coming

:56:23.:56:42.

# Knew its name since before I could speak, oh-oh-oh-oh

:56:43.:57:01.

# They know my name cos I told it to them

:57:02.:57:04.

# But they don't know where and they don't know when

:57:05.:57:09.

# It's coming, oh, when, but it's coming, keep the car running

:57:10.:57:28.

# Please don't think I've left you alone

:57:29.:57:36.

# The same place animals go when they die

:57:37.:57:41.

# You can't climb across a mountain so high

:57:42.:57:46.

# The same city where I go when I sleep

:57:47.:57:51.

# You can't swim across a river so deep

:57:52.:58:05.

# They know my name cos I told it to them

:58:06.:58:08.

# But they don't know where and they don't know when

:58:09.:58:10.

# It's coming, oh, when is it coming?

:58:11.:58:12.

# We know a place where no spaceships go

:58:13.:00:39.

# Between the click of the light and the start of the dream

:00:40.:02:19.

# Between the click of the light and the start of the dream

:02:20.:02:34.

# Between the click of the light and the start of the dream

:02:35.:03:08.

# Throw my ashes into the sea

:03:09.:05:35.

# Guns can't kill what soldiers can't see

:05:36.:06:15.

# Tous les morts-nes forment une armee

:06:16.:07:28.

# In those days their blood was still warm

:07:29.:08:11.

# In the dead light of the afterglow I've gotta know

:08:12.:10:00.

# Can we work it out If we scream and shout

:10:01.:10:07.

# Till we work it out? Can we just work it out

:10:08.:10:15.

# Till we work it out? Till we work it out?

:10:16.:10:26.

# Oh, it was just a glimpse of you Like looking through a window

:10:27.:10:38.

# Or a shallow sea Could you see me?

:10:39.:10:42.

# It's like nothing else we used to know

:10:43.:10:49.

# Are done hanging on In the dead light of the afterglow

:10:50.:10:58.

# I've gotta know Can we work it out

:10:59.:11:02.

# If we scream and shout Till we work it out?

:11:03.:11:09.

# Can we just work it out If we scream and shout

:11:10.:11:13.

# Till we work it out? But you say

:11:14.:11:19.

# Oh, when love is gone where does it go?

:11:20.:11:23.

# Oh, when love is gone where does it go?

:11:24.:11:32.

# Where do we go? And where do we go?

:11:33.:11:44.

# Where do we go? And after this

:11:45.:11:53.

# Can it last another night? After all the bad advice

:11:54.:12:00.

# That had nothing at all to do with life

:12:01.:12:05.

# I've gotta know Can we work it out

:12:06.:12:10.

# If we scream and shout Till we work it out?

:12:11.:12:15.

# Can we just work it out If we scream and shout

:12:16.:12:20.

# Till we work it out? But you say

:12:21.:12:26.

# Oh, when love is gone where does it go?

:12:27.:12:31.

# Oh, when love is gone where does it go?

:12:32.:12:48.

# Oh, when love is gone where does it go?

:12:49.:12:54.

# Hey, Eurydice! Can you see me? (The underworld an endless wave)

:12:55.:18:43.

# I will sing your name, till you're sick of me

:18:44.:18:48.

# Just wait until it's over (Tu dis que c'est la fin du monde)

:18:49.:18:53.

# But if you call for me, this frozen sea

:18:54.:19:01.

# It melts beneath me (I saw you out in front of me)

:19:02.:19:06.

# (Oh Orpheus don't turn around too soon)

:19:07.:19:17.

# Boy, they're gonna eat you alive (Eat you alive)

:19:18.:20:20.

# But it's never gonna happen now (Never gonna happen now)

:20:21.:20:25.

# We'll figure it out somehow (Figure it out somehow)

:20:26.:20:30.

# Boy, they're gonna eat you alive (Eat you alive)

:20:31.:20:39.

# But it's never gonna happen now (Never gonna happen now)

:20:40.:20:44.

# We'll figure it out somehow (Figure it out somehow)

:20:45.:20:47.

# Cos it's never over (it's never over)

:20:48.:20:50.

# They heard me singing and they told me to stop

:20:51.:22:39.

# Quit these pretentious things and just punch the clock

:22:40.:22:46.

# These days my life I feel it has no purpose

:22:47.:22:52.

# But late at night the feelings swim to the surface

:22:53.:23:03.

# Cos on the surface the city lights shine

:23:04.:23:11.

# They're calling at me, come and find your kind

:23:12.:23:20.

# Sometimes I wonder if the world's so small

:23:21.:23:28.

# That we can never get away from the sprawl

:23:29.:23:33.

# Living in the sprawl, dead shopping malls rise

:23:34.:23:37.

# I need the darkness, someone please cut the lights

:23:38.:23:52.

# We rode our bikes to the nearest park

:23:53.:23:57.

# Sat under the swings and kissed in the dark

:23:58.:24:08.

# You shield my eyes from the police lights

:24:09.:24:14.

# The black river, your city lights shine

:24:15.:24:31.

# Sometimes I wonder if the world's so small

:24:32.:24:52.

# Living in the sprawl, dead shopping malls rise

:24:53.:25:10.

# I need the darkness, someone please cut the lights

:25:11.:25:35.

# Sometimes I wonder if the world's so small

:25:36.:25:59.

# Can we ever get away from the sprawl?

:26:00.:26:15.

# I need the darkness, someone please cut the lights

:26:16.:27:33.

CHEERING Hello, Glastonbury! Are you sick of

:27:34.:28:46.

live music? NO! What is this?! I'm sorry about that.

:28:47.:29:58.

Oh, I like this one. coming everyone. Once again, we're

:29:59.:30:53.

called the Arcade Fire. We appreciate your patience and your

:30:54.:30:58.

energy. # Is anything as strange as

:30:59.:31:07.

a normal person? # Well, I'm so confused,

:31:08.:31:09.

am I a normal person, you know # I can't tell if

:31:10.:31:35.

I'm a normal person, it's true # I think I'm cool enough,

:31:36.:31:37.

but am I cruel enough # I'm gonna break you down until

:31:38.:31:40.

everything is normal now # I'm gonna break you down until

:31:41.:31:50.

everything is normal now # They take their tea at two,

:31:51.:31:58.

all the normal people, they do # They burned the jungle down,

:31:59.:32:13.

while they were sleeping it grew # You dream in English now,

:32:14.:32:16.

in proper English, look how # You're just the same as me,

:32:17.:32:18.

it's through # And they will break you down until

:32:19.:32:27.

everything is normal now # They will break you down

:32:28.:32:30.

until everyone is normal now # If that's what's normal now,

:32:31.:32:38.

I don't want to know # If that's what's normal now, mama,

:32:39.:32:50.

don't make me go # When they get excited

:32:51.:33:03.

they try to hide it # When they get excited

:33:04.:33:06.

they try to hide it # When they get excited

:33:07.:33:10.

they try to hide it # When they get excited

:33:11.:33:13.

they try to hide it # I'm gonna break you down until

:33:14.:33:17.

everything is normal now # I'm gonna break you down until

:33:18.:33:25.

much. You've made us so happy. Thank you so much. You guys rule. You guys

:48:20.:48:27.

are the absolute best, thank you so much. That was amazing.

:48:28.:48:35.

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE One more time.

:48:36.:48:49.

What a triumphant set from Arcade Fire. I hope you're enjoying this,

:48:50.:49:46.

wherever you are. A lot of you are maybe in your beds at the moment,

:49:47.:49:51.

maybe having your own festival. This is the gorgeous Huw, fragrant, as

:49:52.:49:59.

well. I'm not that fragrant. Those crazy Canadians, that was a good

:50:00.:50:03.

set. What an amazing show. How's the day been? Lovely. I had a sleep in

:50:04.:50:09.

the green fields. I saw Tune Yards. It started with Kaiser Chiefs. I've

:50:10.:50:13.

had a lovely You're working day. Tomorrow? Yeah Radio 1 Saturday and

:50:14.:50:19.

Sunday and then I hang out with you until 2am. What is the highlight

:50:20.:50:24.

today? It's tricky. I loved what I saw of Lykke Li. She was brilliant

:50:25.:50:30.

on the John Peel Stage. We'll bring you live highlights on the way. We

:50:31.:50:33.

have guests joining us in the tree house as well. We certainly do. I

:50:34.:50:40.

saw Kourtney Barnet. Sorry! I should have asked. How rude, that's all I'm

:50:41.:50:48.

sayingment I enjoyed Kourtney Barnett. She was on the Park Stage.

:50:49.:50:55.

It's behind us over here. She had a big crowd and really great. She's

:50:56.:50:59.

working the festival and doing quite a few performances over the weekend.

:51:00.:51:03.

Thanks for asking any way. Glad that was good. Cool, good start. We will

:51:04.:51:08.

have some acoustic music now. He started playing pubs and clubs in

:51:09.:51:17.

Dublin. It's his first Glastonbury. It's the wonderful Hozier.

:51:18.:51:30.

# We were born sick, you heard them say it

:51:31.:51:41.

# She tells me "worship in the bedroom"

:51:42.:51:46.

# I'll worship like a dog at the shrine of your lies

:51:47.:52:21.

# I'll worship like a dog at the shrine of your lies

:52:22.:52:32.

# I'll tell you my sins and you can sharpen your knife

:52:33.:52:35.

# Something meaty for the main course

:52:36.:53:00.

# I'll worship like a dog at the shrine of your lies

:53:01.:53:19.

# I'll worship like a dog at the shrine of your lies

:53:20.:53:37.

# I'll tell you my sins so you can sharpen your knife

:53:38.:53:50.

# No masters or kings when the ritual begins

:53:51.:53:53.

# There is no sweeter innocence than our gentle sin

:53:54.:54:00.

# In the madness and soil of that sad earthly scene

:54:01.:54:08.

# I'll worship like a dog at the shrine of your lies

:54:09.:54:36.

# I'll tell you my sins and you can sharpen your knife

:54:37.:54:39.

# I'll worship like a dog at the shrine of your lies

:54:40.:54:53.

Glastonbury. What are your first impressions? It is pretty

:54:54.:55:26.

spectacular. The scale of it is quite hard to grasp at first. A

:55:27.:55:32.

great way to be spending a Friday night. That was brilliant. Thank

:55:33.:55:35.

you. That was Hozier. And it was cold up

:55:36.:55:42.

here, so it was hard to play accousticly.

:55:43.:55:45.

With chattering teeth. We are going to the West Holts

:55:46.:55:50.

Stage, where I sues tUnE-yArDs earlier on. It used to be called

:55:51.:55:58.

Jazz World Stage. MIA headlined tonight, a controversial character.

:55:59.:56:02.

She did a lot of controversial things, flicking the finger during

:56:03.:56:08.

the Super Bowl when performing with monnia.

:56:09.:56:11.

She's an amazing artist. We want to put this out now. This is MIA.

:56:12.:56:21.

I can't believe it, we are at Glastonbury, the biggest festival in

M.I.A. Puts on a brilliant show. So compelling to watch. She headlined

:05:06.:05:40.

earlier tonight. We are live from Glastonbury. It is very nice to be

:05:41.:05:45.

here. It is a great way to spend an evening. I hope you're enjoying

:05:46.:05:49.

everything. We have lots more to come, Metronomy, and now one of the

:05:50.:05:55.

great things we we do these shows is we get to capture the excitement of

:05:56.:06:01.

a band when they've finished. We should have Lauren with Arcade Fire.

:06:02.:06:09.

I'm here in the Treehouse with Arcade Fire. That was an incredible

:06:10.:06:15.

performance. I feel tired. We went back to Medieval England, saw all of

:06:16.:06:20.

humanity at the same time. It was incredible. There were people

:06:21.:06:27.

lighting signal flares. It was Medieval, old school carnival,

:06:28.:06:31.

right? It really had that feel to it. You said on stage that you've

:06:32.:06:37.

done some amazing things in this band but that was probably the best

:06:38.:06:40.

experience. Was that just you in the moment or is this a huge deal for

:06:41.:06:44.

you? We've never been in front of a crowd like that. It rel felt for a

:06:45.:06:51.

band that has never had a had a proper hit single, to have that many

:06:52.:06:56.

people singing a song that they've given to your younger brother and

:06:57.:07:02.

hearing that many people sing Wake Up, a powerful experience. And how

:07:03.:07:05.

about the prep for this? The build-up to this has been a pretty

:07:06.:07:10.

huge thing. What's the anticipation of tonight been like for you? We've

:07:11.:07:14.

been playing a lot of shows that have been really fun. And we were

:07:15.:07:19.

like, let's play another show that's really fun. Let's play the biggest

:07:20.:07:25.

party. I read a great quote recently, she said the shows aren't

:07:26.:07:30.

a recital, they are a communal experience. How does it translate

:07:31.:07:33.

with a crowd of that size? It is a vast amount of people. How do you

:07:34.:07:40.

get everybody engaged? Signal flares really help. A couple of guys at the

:07:41.:07:47.

back had signal flares and it lit up the whole area. It really gave a

:07:48.:07:53.

sense of depth and scale. Is that a thing that people normally do at

:07:54.:07:57.

Glastonbury? It is, people advise against it on

:07:58.:08:03.

health and safety basis. Last time it happened was in Scotland and

:08:04.:08:08.

security stopped it. It was dangerous. Maybe they knew something

:08:09.:08:13.

we didn't. It does do something to you standing in front of that size

:08:14.:08:17.

of a crowd. It's a really special night. How did you put this set list

:08:18.:08:22.

together? How did you decide what you are going to play tonight? I

:08:23.:08:27.

know you've been doing region-specific covers Richard was

:08:28.:08:33.

up until 4.30am doing a best of Glastonbury sound clash at the end.

:08:34.:08:38.

That was brilliant. We kind of change it from night to night and we

:08:39.:08:44.

kind of instinctively went with what's been working. Reflektor tends

:08:45.:08:49.

to work at the front. Reflektor makes people dance and it sets the

:08:50.:08:52.

tone for everything. We thought, let's start with that. That's a good

:08:53.:08:57.

party song. This has been a great year for you guys and you've done

:08:58.:09:02.

some amazing things to promote the new album, Reflektor. But it is ten

:09:03.:09:06.

years since the debut album. Does it feel like a decade? It doesn't feel

:09:07.:09:12.

like a decade, but something happened over the last ten years,

:09:13.:09:19.

because that record was not like a hit record by any Metrix, and yet to

:09:20.:09:25.

see that many people know the songs that well, like older brothers have

:09:26.:09:30.

given it to their younger brothers. To me that's the greatest compliment

:09:31.:09:34.

in the world. Just people giving each other music, sharing it with

:09:35.:09:38.

your friends. That's what it is all about. That's how I felt about the

:09:39.:09:43.

Pixies or nirvana or anything that was important to me as a kid. That's

:09:44.:09:47.

your goal when you are in a band. It is fantastic to see you guys up

:09:48.:09:53.

there with all the toys at your disposal. Having the time of your

:09:54.:09:57.

lives. Where do you go from here? What's next? Dublin. We are playing

:09:58.:10:02.

a pretty big snow in Dublin in two days. We've never been a

:10:03.:10:09.

goal-orientated band. We never had a white board that said Glastonbury,

:10:10.:10:14.

number one album, play Saturday Night Live. Our goals have always

:10:15.:10:19.

been more musical, like, write a better song, do something with

:10:20.:10:24.

production that's different. It doesn't feel that different for us.

:10:25.:10:29.

It feels like we are in control of our own destiny. We are able to

:10:30.:10:33.

chose what projects we want to do. It feels like an exciting time.

:10:34.:10:37.

There's no like, what do we do that's bigger? We don't want to be

:10:38.:10:43.

bigger or smaller. It is not about topping it that way. We haven't

:10:44.:10:51.

changed. Congratulations again on such a wonderful headline show.

:10:52.:10:58.

Pleasure. Now can I take my make-up off? Yes, somebody give him a wipe.

:10:59.:11:07.

Lauren talking to Arcade Fire without their massive paper papier

:11:08.:11:15.

mache heads. I like his fake painted on glasses.

:11:16.:11:18.

So many people saying today how fantastic everybody looks. It looks

:11:19.:11:22.

like this is the festival that everyone makes such an effort for.

:11:23.:11:25.

Beautiful make-up and clothes that people are wearing. A lot of people

:11:26.:11:29.

are commenting on it. We are going now to the band who

:11:30.:11:34.

were headlines on the Park Stage and this is Metronomy from earlier on

:11:35.:11:36.

this evening. # Love letters

Mine # This town

:17:51.:18:13.

This town, this town looks more like a mad professor with

:18:14.:19:50.

his massive bouffant quiff. That was Metronomy and they were on

:19:51.:19:53.

the Park Stage earlier on. Star-spotting. We should do more of

:19:54.:19:59.

that. Who've you seen? Most impressive. Noel Gallagher. I'm

:20:00.:20:07.

going to trump that, Bradley Cooper, with Metallica. Gemma Cairney loves

:20:08.:20:15.

a party. She is in an area called Block 9 and we are going over to her

:20:16.:20:20.

live right now. Hi Gemma. Wow! What can I say? The place at Glastonbury

:20:21.:20:26.

where your wildest dreams and nightmares become reality, it is

:20:27.:20:31.

pretty grey out here. Block 9 in the midst of it all a post-apocalyptic

:20:32.:20:44.

bonanza. Earlier the One Show was here. They were here with Euan

:20:45.:20:54.

Thomas and this is what happened. With all due respect, at the moment,

:20:55.:21:00.

where are we? It is bits and peepses everywhere. What is it going to be?

:21:01.:21:07.

This will be the download. Over here is the New York traffic lights with

:21:08.:21:15.

a fully operational Walk, Don't Walk signs. And the dancers. Do you think

:21:16.:21:21.

this will be done for Wednesday? It is a giant jigsaw puzzle. But in

:21:22.:21:26.

your mind it is all finished? In my mind we are downtown New York 1989.

:21:27.:21:33.

And a 50-foot high set is under construction. Dedicated to music

:21:34.:21:37.

closer to home, it is called the London Underground. That's a serious

:21:38.:21:42.

amount of scaffolding. You can't tell now but this becomes a replica

:21:43.:21:48.

of an East London tower block. And the wow factor is our Crocked tube.

:21:49.:21:57.

This one only weighs one tonne and it is made out of plywood. And this

:21:58.:22:03.

goes up there? Up to the third floor, like it's been smashed

:22:04.:22:08.

through the building. I've been training recently. Shall we do it? A

:22:09.:22:17.

0-tonne crane lifts it on to the scaffolding. Hard hat on, highs

:22:18.:22:21.

advise, gloves, but Alex has loads more kit than me. Slowly by surely

:22:22.:22:32.

the carriage rises into position. That's a tonne of Tube train hanging

:22:33.:22:39.

right there. Not exactly in my hands but I feel responsible. It's up

:22:40.:22:52.

there. It looks good? Really happy. Went very smoothly. They are

:22:53.:22:57.

securing it now. I have got a bit of a sweat on. I think you at least owe

:22:58.:23:06.

me a cup of tea. A mammoth operation takes place, with car penters and

:23:07.:23:10.

artists. The end result is breathtaking.

:23:11.:23:16.

This is amazing. Last time I was here it was a field with

:23:17.:23:20.

scaffolding. Now look at it. It looks like New York. And as for

:23:21.:23:25.

London Underground, that's genius. Am I actually in Somerset in a

:23:26.:23:32.

lovely lady offered to show me around. Welcome to the NYC Download.

:23:33.:23:41.

Are you going to show me around? Yes. You've got to teach men how to

:23:42.:23:46.

vogue. OK. It's absolutely heaving in there.

:23:47.:24:06.

It's brilliant. I'm going to check out the London Underground. This is

:24:07.:24:14.

the weirdest thing. Have a look in here. I'm inside a fridge. That was

:24:15.:24:27.

the most bizarre entrance to a club ever.

:24:28.:24:36.

It's my first time at Glastonbury. I've got to say I'm truly blown away

:24:37.:24:45.

by the venues here at Block 9. If you thought this place was mud,

:24:46.:24:49.

wellies and bands, think again. There's so much more to it than

:24:50.:24:58.

that. Well hello there. Euan had his fun and it is now time for mine. See

:24:59.:25:07.

you later, guys. That is a woman having far too much

:25:08.:25:14.

fun. Any fantasy you have, you can live it out here at Glastonbury.

:25:15.:25:19.

There are so many random worlds you can visit, whether it is Shangri-la,

:25:20.:25:25.

the London Underground or Block 9. And so much work goes into these

:25:26.:25:29.

things before the festival opens. Months of planning and building.

:25:30.:25:33.

Unbelievable. We are going over to the John Peel Stage now. Earlier on

:25:34.:25:38.

Lykke Li played a brilliant show. This is the wonderful Swedish Lykke

:25:39.:25:41.

Li. fall on me

:34:51.:35:08.

CHEERING. An amazing live perform earnsier on

:35:09.:35:19.

the John Peel Stage. That was lick length.

:35:20.:35:22.

Back to celebrity spotting. Why is Noel Gallagher here? I heard a

:35:23.:35:26.

rumour he might be scouting the place out for a how much... Headline

:35:27.:35:32.

slot? That is a totally unfounded rumour. That didn't come from us. I

:35:33.:35:37.

can't think who he would be going on stage with. Dolly! Dolly and Noel!

:35:38.:35:44.

Bradley Cooper turned up in a helicopter with Lars from Metallica.

:35:45.:35:50.

They are best mates apparently. It was when the rain was pouring down.

:35:51.:35:56.

People were huddled in tents and this lone figure was standing there.

:35:57.:36:02.

It looked like Bradley Cooper. It is! The most unlikely spotting of a

:36:03.:36:05.

Hollywood star at Glastonbury. Very strange.

:36:06.:36:08.

One of the good things about doing this show is we have these amazing

:36:09.:36:15.

cabaret performers. We are now going to see Sylvia in action. She was

:36:16.:36:19.

playing in the Circus Field earlier. She's going to get her hoops out and

:36:20.:36:21.

show us what she can do with them. APPLAUSE

:36:22.:39:01.

Wow! Seriously impressive. She can do the splits and hula hoop with her

:39:02.:39:10.

knows! I was asking earlier if you have ever hula hooped. I have, but

:39:11.:39:18.

not with my knees or ankles and I wasn't smiling at the time. Sylvia,

:39:19.:39:23.

thank you. I must go to the circus tent more often. This is Interpol

:39:24.:39:26.

with Slow Hands. # Just raisy like the good old days

:39:27.:41:07.

# -- crazy like the good old days # Can you see what you've done? My

:41:08.:41:14.

my heart and soul # This is a wasteland now

:41:15.:41:21.

# We spies, we slow hands # Put the weights around yourself

:41:22.:41:32.

# We spies, oh yeah, we slow hands # You put the weights all around

:41:33.:41:35.

yourself now. We spies oh yeah we slow hands

:41:36.:42:16.

# We spies, we slow hands # We spies, internet slow hands

:42:17.:42:25.

# You put the weights all around yourself.

:42:26.:42:28.

An amazing backdrop. That was spectacular. That was Interpol with

:42:29.:42:34.

Slow Hands. Still to come is Paolo Nutini.

:42:35.:42:42.

That's coming up after the next act. More live acoustic music now, and

:42:43.:42:47.

this guy played on the Pyramid Stage. This is Adam from The War on

:42:48.:42:50.

Drugs. # Like a train in reverse

:42:51.:43:28.

down a dark road # Have you fixed

:43:29.:43:32.

your eyes to the wind? # Will you let it pull you in again

:43:33.:43:51.

on the way back in? # I'm a bit run down here

:43:52.:43:59.

at the moment # There's a cold wind blowing

:44:00.:44:05.

down my old road # Down the backstreets

:44:06.:44:37.

where the pines grow # But I'd be lying to myself

:44:38.:44:42.

if I said I didn't mind # But it won't be easy

:44:43.:44:55.

to leave it all again # There's just a stranger

:44:56.:45:22.

living in me # I'm just bit run down here

:45:23.:45:50.

at the moment # Yeah, I'm all alone here,

:45:51.:46:11.

living in darkness That was The War on Drugs. They have

:46:12.:46:54.

an album out later in the year. How you doing stamina-wise. I'm OK.

:46:55.:47:02.

It doesn't feel like nearly 2 in the morning. You are working tomorrow,

:47:03.:47:06.

can I remind you of that? What we thought we would do now is go to

:47:07.:47:11.

Paolo Nutini. He's brought his whole family, lots of mates. He's here for

:47:12.:47:15.

the duration of the festival. This is his sixth or seventh time of

:47:16.:47:20.

playing, and he is only young. This is Paolo Nutini for you to enjoy.

:47:21.:47:57.

voice. If you go to block 9, guess who you

:47:58.:53:40.

are going to find there? Don't know. Paolo Nutini. Really? If you saw

:53:41.:53:47.

anyone you wanted to see today, head to the Glastonbury website. There's

:53:48.:53:52.

over 60 performances from six of the stages here at Glastonbury. There's

:53:53.:53:58.

loads. Check it out at some point during the weekend. The iPlayer is a

:53:59.:54:03.

great place to go to for catch-up. If you need more of the stuff you've

:54:04.:54:09.

missed out on, you can catch up. Who are you looking forward to tomorrow?

:54:10.:54:16.

Metallica. The controversial headline slot. There's got to be

:54:17.:54:22.

pyrotechnics. Lauren and Mark will be back at 3.00pm tomorrow. We'll

:54:23.:54:28.

see goodnight night now. If your friend was taken away...

:54:29.:54:31.

# Not giving in... # I'm afraid

:54:32.:54:34.

there's not much we can do. ..how would you fight

:54:35.:54:37.

to get her back? This is wrong. I'm not going to

:54:38.:54:39.

carry on as if nothing has happened.

:54:40.:54:43.
