Motorhead Glastonbury

Hello and welcome to Glastonbury on BBC Four.

It's that time of year again when 100,000 people

come to camp out here at Worthy Farm, come rain or shine -

and trust me, we have had both today -

to enjoy some of the best bands in the world.

On the Pyramid Stage behind me, you can hear The Libertines,

the secret act who have just taken to the Pyramid Stage

to fill that gap, that TBC,

between Florence And The Machine, tonight's headliner,

and Motorhead, who just performed.

You might have thought that Lemmy would have played the festival,

particularly with his former band Hawkwind,

who are synonymous with Glastonbury.

But, apparently not.

He left in '75 and he missed the time

when Hawkwind were here at Glastonbury Festival.

So, it was high time they brought

some of the hard stuff to Worthy Farm.

Our own Mark Radcliffe caught up with Lemmy earlier.

He's smoking in this video, which... What can you expect from a rock god?

We don't condone it, but it's the hard stuff,

it's Motorhead at Glastonbury.

Here's what Lemmy had to say to Mark.

-I'm backstage with Lemmy, how are you?

-So far, so good.

Is this something you take with you everywhere?

-Well, it stops me getting bored, you know?

-Is that the sign of your youth,

-at the arcades at Blackpool, and all that?

-Yeah.

-Yeah.

-More or less.

-Yeah, yeah.

Now, I was trying to work out, have you been to Glastonbury before?

Because Hawkwind have played here several times.

-Never done it.

-Never been?

-In my life.

-Do you like playing something this size?

-Sure, anywhere.

You get the same show.

Is that it? You get the Motorhead... The atmos...

-Wherever it is.

-There's no defence.

So, it's the same as if you were in a pub, to 20 people?

-It's the same thing?

-We're just two people and a dog, you know?

-Yeah.

Would you come if you weren't playing, to something like this,

-or is it not your scene?

-It's too far away for me.

-I live in America!

-Yeah, all right!

Were festivals something you liked doing in the old days?

Did you hang around for three or four days or a week

back in the day, in the '60s and the '70s?

-Was it somewhere you liked to hang out?

-In Hawkwind, we did.

-Yeah.

It was...

-It wasn't really necessary to hang around. We just did it...

-Yeah.

-..because we were young and foolish.

-Right, yeah.

And all that stuff, you know?

But, like, I hung around to see the Grateful Dead

-and I was never so sad in my life.

-Why?

-Because they were crap.

-Were they?

-Yeah.

-Were they crap for about eight hours?

-Yeah.

-Yeah.

Which makes it even more crap, doesn't it?

-Is Motorhead 40 years old? Was it '75?

-40 years this year, yeah.

40 years, yeah. Has it changed or has the aesthetic of Motorhead -

the original plan you had - have you just kind of kept true to that?

I wanted to be in the MC5, basically.

So, I tried to recreate the MC5.

But that was no good, so we just carried on, like, you know?

-I don't know what we were thinking, really.

-Right.

-Do you still think that?

-Yeah.
