I thought we were the legends. Electric light district, now you are

:00:10.:00:17.

talking my language. Date appeared on my programme in 1977, when they

:00:18.:00:22.

sang... It's a living thing, it's a terrible thing to lose. Strange

:00:23.:00:29.

magic. Blue sky man! I know the big one. Mr Brightside? That is the

:00:30.:00:38.

Killers. Mr blue sky! Boom, boom, it works for Jeff Lynne and it works

:00:39.:00:40.

for me! Welcome back to Glastonbury 2016. As

:00:41.:01:03.

you can see, slightly overcast sky rather than Mr blue sky but we are

:01:04.:01:07.

still here and having a party. I've overdone it, today is the first day

:01:08.:01:11.

of the festival I've not had plastered. God love you. We are not

:01:12.:01:15.

worried about the rain, as my grandad used to say, your skin is

:01:16.:01:18.

waterproof, get out there and get on with it so that's pretty much the

:01:19.:01:21.

attitude at the Glastonbury Festival and it has been a weekend. Sunday

:01:22.:01:25.

has been a great day so far so we are going to catchy whupped with a

:01:26.:01:31.

bit of the action from the festival site so far before we begin. --

:07:56.:07:59.

good to see an even better to hear. Absolutely, this Sunday tea-time

:08:00.:08:02.

thing has become known as the legends slot. The unofficial

:08:03.:08:08.

headline spot coming usually about a crowd of 100,000. This year it was

:08:09.:08:12.

Jeff Lynne's wrote ELO that we're going to get to shortly but there

:08:13.:08:15.

are other legends on site, it is fair disabled. And in this space.

:08:16.:08:20.

# After my picture fades and darkness has turned to grey

:10:06.:10:46.

# Watching through windows you're wondering if I'm OK

:10:47.:10:52.

# If you're lost, you can look and you will find me

:10:53.:11:10.

# If you fall, I will catch you, I will be waiting

:11:11.:11:20.

# If you're lost, you can look and you will find me

:11:21.:11:28.

# If you fall, I will catch you, I will be waiting

:11:29.:11:38.

APPLAUSE Cyndi Lauper, well done with the

:11:39.:12:11.

barrage of disco coming in! At least you know, it's not in the right key

:12:12.:12:16.

but whatever, I've got it. Your first time at Glastonbury? Yes, I'm

:12:17.:12:20.

really excited to be here. I've never been here. I really felt like

:12:21.:12:25.

I was missing out. I'm so glad, I just wish I had a glittery raincoat!

:12:26.:12:31.

I did not think to bring it! I'm trying to lip read because I can't

:12:32.:12:35.

see you now. But you are having a good time? A glittery raincoat! You

:12:36.:12:43.

could definitely get one. We will get you one. And some wings, I need

:12:44.:12:53.

wings. And some glittery teardrops. There is so much glitter on-site and

:12:54.:12:56.

so many wings but if that's what you want, job done, you are sorted.

:12:57.:13:01.

Absolutely fantastic. Thank you very much, Cyndi Lauper. The time has

:13:02.:13:06.

come from one leading to another, let's get ready for ELO's

:13:07.:13:09.

performance but before we get there, we are going to catch up with a

:13:10.:13:13.

little bit of the story of how this, as Mark said, this unofficial

:13:14.:13:17.

headline spot came to be. I can't think of a better catalogue of songs

:13:18.:13:20.

to be beaten in this, as you will see, the hits keep on coming. We

:13:21.:13:25.

have had a big one from Cyndi Lauper already. And plenty more to come.

:13:26.:13:29.

This is the story of ELO's appearance at Glastonbury.

:13:30.:13:39.

Symphonic pop rockers the Electric light Orchestra are one of the most

:13:40.:13:46.

beloved British bands of all times. And that the baton of big haired

:13:47.:13:52.

Brummie, Jeff Lynne, they've used raucous riffs with footstomping

:13:53.:13:57.

strings and soundtrack the 70s. You've got your rock 'n' roll

:13:58.:14:01.

harmonies, classical bits, stick them all together and what have you

:14:02.:14:09.

got? ELO. ELO's first orchestral offering came in 1972.

:14:10.:14:13.

# Did you see your friend crying from his eyes today?

:14:14.:14:25.

Then they started his daddy 's stream of singles with Showdown.

:14:26.:14:35.

Breakthrough album A New World Record set them on the road to

:14:36.:14:38.

stardom. # It's living thing

:14:39.:14:44.

# It is a terrible thing to lose and follow-up Out Of The Blue proved the

:14:45.:14:50.

perfect blend of orchestral opulent and polished pop production.

:14:51.:14:54.

# Tell us why you had to hide away for so long

:14:55.:14:59.

# Where did we go wrong. # By the end of the 70s, ELO were the

:15:00.:15:07.

biggest band on the planet. Their record-breaking tour came complete

:15:08.:15:14.

with a giant flying saucer stage. And with a little help from Olivia

:15:15.:15:18.

Newton-John, they hit number one with Xanadu in 1980.

:15:19.:15:23.

# Xanadu. # But as 80s pop got clean cut and

:15:24.:15:28.

cosmopolitan, ELO fell out of favour and called it a day in 1986. Jeff

:15:29.:15:34.

Lynne turned producer on records for Tom Petty, Roy Orbison and George

:15:35.:15:39.

Harrison. And together with Bob Dylan, they formed the most super of

:15:40.:15:44.

supergroups, The Travelling Wilburys.

:15:45.:15:51.

# Everybody's got somebody to lean on. #

:15:52.:15:55.

It was almost 30 years until Jeff dusted off the aviator sunglasses

:15:56.:15:59.

and re-formed ELO in 2014. # All over the world

:16:00.:16:04.

# Everybody get the word. # This resurrection brought ELO's

:16:05.:16:10.

galaxy of hits to a whole new generation. People are really going

:16:11.:16:17.

out of their way to be nice and say, "I love you and all your stuff".

:16:18.:16:21.

That was not happening ten years ago but it certainly is now. There is an

:16:22.:16:25.

old saying, if you hang around long enough, you will be all right in the

:16:26.:16:33.

end! And now, Jeff Lynne's ELO are ready to rock the Pyramid stage,

:16:34.:16:38.

though Don your hair helmets, set phasers to stun, and prepare for a

:16:39.:16:41.

Sunday afternoon set that promises to be out of this world.

:16:42.:16:55.

# You made a fool of me, but them broken dreams have got to end

:16:56.:17:22.

# Hey woman, you got the blues, cos you ain't got no one else to use

:17:23.:17:28.

# There's an open road that leads nowhere, so just make some miles

:17:29.:17:33.

# There's a hole in my head where the rain comes in

:17:34.:17:41.

# But you ain't got no one else to blame

:17:42.:17:55.

# Evil woman, evil woman, evil woman, evil woman

:17:56.:18:11.

# Hit some gold too hot to settle down

:18:12.:18:18.

# But a fool and his money soon go separate ways

:18:19.:18:23.

# And you found a fool lyin' in a daze

:18:24.:18:28.

# You destroyed all the virtues that the Lord gave you

:18:29.:18:34.

# It's so good that you're feeling pain

:18:35.:18:38.

# But you better get yourself on board the very next train

:18:39.:18:45.

# Evil woman, evil woman evil woman, evil woman

:18:46.:19:53.

# But now you're tryin' to wail a different song

:19:54.:20:00.

# You made the wine, now you drink the cup

:20:01.:20:06.

# I came runnin' every time you cried

:20:07.:20:10.

# Thought I saw love smilin' in your eyes

:20:11.:20:15.

# Ha ha very nice to know, that you ain't got no place left to go

:20:16.:20:29.

# Evil woman, evil woman, evil woman, evil woman #.

:20:30.:21:04.

Thank you! Hello, Glastonbury. That's great. It's great to be here,

:21:05.:21:22.

we have never been here before. Here is our next song. It's called

:21:23.:21:23.

Showdown. # Looks like we're

:21:24.:21:36.

ridin' on the same train # Looks as through

:21:37.:22:01.

there'll be more pain # And it's rainin'

:22:02.:22:19.

# Now my heart is turned to stone again

:22:20.:22:47.

# And it's rainin' all over the world

:22:48.:23:14.

# And it's rainin' all over the world

:23:15.:24:17.

# And it's rainin' all over the world

:24:18.:24:39.

# There's gonna be a party all over the world

:24:40.:26:18.

# But where it came from, I don't really know

:26:19.:26:24.

# And I heard these voices calling all over the world

:26:25.:26:33.

# Everybody everywhere is gonna feel it tonight

:26:34.:26:53.

# They're gonna get hot down in the USA

:26:54.:27:04.

# We're gonna take a trip across the sea

:27:05.:27:11.

# Everybody come along with me

:27:12.:27:16.

# We're gonna hit the night down in gay Par-ee

:27:17.:27:23.

# Everybody everywhere is gonna feel it tonight

:27:24.:27:51.

# Everybody everywhere is gonna feel it tonight

:27:52.:28:28.

# I know a place where we all can meet

:28:29.:28:42.

# Everybody will shine till the daylight

:28:43.:28:48.

# Everybody everywhere is gonna feel it tonight

:28:49.:29:07.

# When I was a boy, I had a dream, all about the things I'd like to be

:29:08.:30:14.

# Soon as I was in my bed, Music played inside my head

:30:15.:30:20.

# When I was a boy, I learned to play,

:30:21.:30:34.

# Far into the night and drift away

:30:35.:30:40.

# Don't want to work on the milk or the bread,

:30:41.:30:43.

# I just want to play my guitar instead

:30:44.:30:46.

# Finding out what life could really mean

:30:47.:31:38.

# Don't want a job cause it drives me crazy,

:31:39.:31:40.

# Just wanna sing, "Do you love me, baby?"

:31:41.:31:43.

# Sailin' away on the crest of a wave

:31:44.:33:47.

# Rollin' and ridin' and slippin' and slidin'

:33:48.:33:55.

# Making believe this is what you've conceived

:33:56.:34:53.

# Moving in line when you look back in time

:34:54.:35:01.

# Takin' a dive cos you can't halt the slide

:35:02.:35:58.

# So let her go, don't start spoiling the show

:35:59.:36:04.

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE Thank you very much.

:36:05.:38:14.

# Did you see your friend crying from his eyes today?

:38:15.:38:21.

# Did you see him run through the streets and far away?

:38:22.:38:31.

# Did you see him run, Did you see him fall?

:38:32.:38:46.

# Did his life flash by at the bedroom door?

:38:47.:39:46.

# Did you hear the news came across the air today?

:39:47.:39:53.

# Someone has been found on the rocks down in the bay

:39:54.:40:07.

# Did you see him hide, Did you see him crawl?

:40:08.:40:15.

# Does his life mean more than it did before?

:40:16.:41:16.

# Did you see that man running through the streets today?

:41:17.:41:24.

# Just got back from the downtown palais

:41:25.:43:03.

# It knocked me right back in the alley

:43:04.:43:09.

# I'm ready, yeah, Yeah, yeah, I'm ready

:43:10.:43:11.

# Sweet little lady sings like a songbird

:43:12.:43:21.

# And she sings the opera like you ain't never heard

:43:22.:43:24.

# She loves the way Puccini lays down a tune

:43:25.:43:48.

# And Verdi's always creeping from her room

:43:49.:44:12.

# Come on, I'll show you how to sing the blues

:44:13.:44:14.

# Now baby, come on over you got nothin' to lose

:44:15.:44:22.

# Are you ready, Hey, hey, hey are you ready

:44:23.:44:26.

# I wanna show you how to rock and roll

:44:27.:44:31.

# Now listen here, baby, she said to me

:45:01.:45:18.

# Well we were reelin' and a rockin' all through the night

:45:19.:45:21.

# Yeah, we were rockin' at the opera house until the break of light

:45:22.:45:23.

# And the orchestra were playin' all Chuck Berry's greatest tunes

:45:24.:45:26.

# And the singers in the chorus all got off on singing blues

:45:27.:45:30.

# And as the night grew older everybody was as one

:45:31.:45:33.

# The people on the streets came runnin' in to join in song

:45:34.:45:36.

# Just to hear the opera singer singin' rock and roll so pure

:45:37.:45:39.

# I thought I saw the mayor there but I wasn't really sure

:45:40.:45:46.

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE Yeah, that's great, thank you.

:45:47.:46:28.

# Although the things you've done I wouldn't criticise

:46:29.:46:31.

# You see I gotta make you understand

:46:32.:46:38.

# I know it sounds a foolish thing to say

:46:39.:46:42.

# But it don't matter baby cos today's another day

:46:43.:46:45.

# You shine a little love on my life and let me see

:46:46.:47:04.

# Remember, tonight we're gonna run till dawn

:47:05.:47:07.

# We'll never stop, we got a good thing goin' on

# Can you understand Yes, I understand

:47:40.:47:43.

# Can you feel it's right I know it is

:47:44.:47:46.

# Will you be the same I'll do it all again

:47:47.:47:50.

# It's been a year now and it's getting so much better

:47:51.:48:07.

# Though everybody said you'll soon forget her

:48:08.:48:15.

# Thay couldn't see and they just didn't understand

:48:16.:48:18.

# And lookin' in the mirror There were fools at either hand

:48:19.:48:25.

# You shine a little love on my life and let me see

:48:26.:48:38.

# You shine a little love on my life and let me see

:49:35.:49:59.

# Wish I was, yeah, a wild west hero.

:50:00.:50:44.

# And then I think there might just be a better life.

:50:45.:50:56.

# Away from all we know, that's where I wanna go

:50:57.:51:00.

# Out on the wild side and I wish I was, o-oo-o-oh, a wild west hero

:51:01.:51:25.

# Ride the range all the day till the first fading light

:51:26.:51:31.

# Be with my western girl round the fire, oh, so bright

:51:32.:51:37.

# I'd be the Indians' friend, let them live to be free

:51:38.:51:43.

# Ridin' into the sunset, I wish I could be

:51:44.:52:19.

# I'd ride the desert sands and through the prairie lands

:52:20.:52:27.

# The folks would come to me, they'd say, we need you here

:52:28.:52:39.

# Oh, I wish I was, o-oo-o-oh, a wild west hero

:52:40.:52:59.

# Ride the range all the day till the first fading light

:53:00.:53:06.

# Be with my western girl round the fire, oh, so bright

:54:17.:54:29.

# Have you been all right through all those

# Oh, oh, telephone line, give me some time

:56:40.:56:46.

# Oh, oh, telephone line, give me some time

:56:47.:56:59.

# Well, can't you just let it ring a little longer

:57:00.:57:31.

# Through shadows of the night

:57:32.:57:42.

# Let it ring forever more, oo-oo-oo-oh

:57:43.:57:57.

Thanks very much. Here is one you can bounce around to or jump up and

:59:12.:59:54.

down to, good one for that. # The city streets are empty now,

:59:55.:00:08.

The lights don't shine no more # And so the songs are way down low,

:00:09.:00:22.

Turning, turning, turning # A sound that flows into my mind,

:00:23.:00:28.

The echoes of the daylight # Of everything that is

:00:29.:00:33.

alive in my blue world # I turn to stone

:00:34.:00:40.

when you are gone # Turn to stone

:00:41.:00:43.

When you comin' home # The dying embers of the night

:00:44.:00:55.

A fire that slowly fades till dawn. # Still glow upon the wall so bright

:00:56.:01:08.

Burning burning burning. # The tired streets that hide away

:01:09.:01:14.

From here to everywhere they go. # Roll past my door

:01:15.:01:18.

into the day in my blue world. # Turn to stone,

:01:19.:01:26.

when you comin' home # Turn to stone

:01:27.:01:40.

when you are gone # Yes I'm turnin' to stone 'cos

:01:41.:01:52.

# Why you ain't comin' home if I'm turnin' to stone?

:01:53.:01:54.

# You've been gone for so long and I can't carry on

:01:55.:01:56.

# Yes I'm turnin' I'm turnin' I'm turnin' to stone.

:01:57.:02:02.

# The dancing shadows on the wall The two-step in the hall

:02:03.:02:11.

# Are all I see since you've been gone, turning turning turning.

:02:12.:02:17.

# Through all I sit here and I wait I turn to stone I turn to stone.

:02:18.:02:21.

# You will return again some day to my blue world.

:02:22.:02:26.

# Turn to stone, when you comin' home

# I turn to stone when you are gone

:02:38.:02:56.

# Turn to stone, When you comin' home

:02:57.:03:05.

# Turn to stone when you are gone

:03:06.:03:14.

# You got me runnin', goin' out of my mind,

:03:15.:04:21.

# You got me thinkin' that I'm wastin' my time

:04:22.:04:24.

# Don't bring me down, No no no no no,

:04:25.:04:33.

# I'll tell you once more before I get off the floor

:04:34.:04:36.

# You wanna stay out with your fancy friends

:04:37.:04:45.

# I'm tellin' you it's gonna be the end,

:04:46.:04:49.

# Don't bring me down, No no no no no,

:04:50.:04:57.

# I'll tell you once more before I get off the floor

:04:58.:05:02.

# What happend to the girl I used to know,

:05:03.:05:27.

# You let your mind out somewhere down the road,

:05:28.:05:30.

# Don't bring me down, No no no no no,

:05:31.:05:39.

# I'll tell you once more before I get off the floor

:05:40.:05:42.

# You're always talkin' 'bout your crazy nights,

:05:43.:05:52.

# One of these days you're gonna get it right

:05:53.:05:55.

# Don't bring me down, No no no no no,

:05:56.:06:03.

# I'll tell you once more before I get off the floor

:06:04.:06:07.

# You're lookin' good, just like a snake in the grass,

:06:08.:06:36.

# One of these days you're gonna break your glass

:06:37.:06:39.

# Don't bring me down, No no no no no,

:06:40.:06:47.

# I'll tell you once more before I get off the floor

:06:48.:06:51.

:21:23.:23:56.

So here we are, joining the man who has just been playing the lead and

:23:57.:24:23.

slot at Glastonbury Festival, minutes fresh off the stage, Mr Jeff

:24:24.:24:29.

Lynne, how are you? Not too bad. I was a bit scared before we went on

:24:30.:24:32.

because we had never done a festival before, in the thousand years we

:24:33.:24:37.

have been going. Except smaller ones. But this one was amazing to

:24:38.:24:45.

look and see that many people. Everybody tells me it went down

:24:46.:24:50.

well. So this was your festival debut? Of this size, yeah. I did

:24:51.:24:57.

Hyde Park. That was the other one. But this one is so big. Why did you

:24:58.:25:04.

do it? He made me do it. Your manager? My manager, yeah. He was

:25:05.:25:10.

going to beat me up if I didn't do it. He must have persuaded you asked

:25:11.:25:14.

why Glastonbury was important. Yes, he said it was in a really good time

:25:15.:25:19.

slot. So we might as well do it, because we had all rehearsed and

:25:20.:25:24.

been doing the tour. This is the 19th show on this tour. So it was a

:25:25.:25:29.

good reason to do it, otherwise it would have meant us practising for a

:25:30.:25:32.

month just to get it up to this level. So did you research it, have

:25:33.:25:40.

you watched Glastonbury in the past? I have seen bits of it on the telly,

:25:41.:25:44.

of course. I saw some of it last night. It makes me kind oh, shoot!

:25:45.:25:53.

That is big, isn't it? At it came out fine in the end. It was fine

:25:54.:25:59.

once I got up there. Quite incredible that someone like you,

:26:00.:26:03.

who have had a long career, would still get nervous. I always get

:26:04.:26:08.

nervous at that sort of thing. Like I say, I haven't had enough

:26:09.:26:13.

experience at those. Most people just treat it like a regular gig,

:26:14.:26:18.

but it's difficult to do that when you have only done one before. So

:26:19.:26:22.

the likes of Dolly Parton and Lionel Richie have played this slot in the

:26:23.:26:25.

past. Their reaction afterwards has been, wow, they have been blown

:26:26.:26:31.

away. Do you share that feeling? Yeah, I was knocked out with the

:26:32.:26:36.

crowd. There were so many waving and clapping and singing along. I love

:26:37.:26:42.

that. As a songwriter, that's what you love, when everybody is singing

:26:43.:26:45.

your song louder than you are singing it. And when you looked out,

:26:46.:26:52.

was there anything that stands out? At one point, I saw a dingy floating

:26:53.:26:56.

by. I saw lots of peculiar things, but I can't play them on the TV or

:26:57.:27:04.

the radio. There were certainly some characters in the front few rows,

:27:05.:27:06.

wearing this amazing stuff and nodding at me and doing little

:27:07.:27:12.

puppets at me. Pretty much only at Glastonbury. Yes! And how would you

:27:13.:27:18.

sum up your Glastonbury experience, being here with ELO? It was

:27:19.:27:21.

fantastic. I had never set foot in the place before, so it was all a

:27:22.:27:28.

shock to me. But I really enjoyed it, and the crowd were fabulous.

:27:29.:27:34.

Thank you for a much. Wellies on an sticking around for the rest of the

:27:35.:27:39.

festival? We are, unfortunately. I was going to take you to the circus

:27:40.:27:45.

field. They will not let me stay. Jeff, thank you very much.

:27:46.:27:51.

What a nice guy, and what an unarguable song catalogue, but what

:27:52.:27:55.

is it about the Midlands rockers that they are so down-to-earth? All

:27:56.:28:00.

the sabbath guys and noddy and Robert Plant, and of course, the

:28:01.:28:03.

great Roy would. Can we have Roy would next year in the legend slots?

:28:04.:28:09.

With all those great tunes? Let's have Roy. We will start making the

:28:10.:28:17.

list. This is your last show. My last link. Thank you for having me.

:28:18.:28:22.

I am still very excited to see what happens tonight on The Other Stage.

:28:23.:28:27.

Excellent line-up. I know Coldplay are the pyramid headliners, but we

:28:28.:28:33.

have LCD Sound system and back on The Other Stage. Looking forward to

:28:34.:28:38.

deck. Also on BBC Four after this, you can see Gregory Porter and Ellie

:28:39.:28:43.

Goulding, and then we are back at nine tonight here. Not you, but us.

:28:44.:28:48.

Thanks very much for having me, and don't forget, you can have a look at

:28:49.:28:53.

the live streaming on our website. We are back here later with

:28:54.:28:58.

Coldplay, on the Pyramid stage. Hopefully, the rain will keep off

:28:59.:29:00.

and

:29:01.:29:01.
