I thought we were the legends. Electric light district, now you are

talking my language. Date appeared on my programme in 1977, when they

sang... It's a living thing, it's a terrible thing to lose. Strange

magic. Blue sky man! I know the big one. Mr Brightside? That is the

Killers. Mr blue sky! Boom, boom, it works for Jeff Lynne and it works

for me! Welcome back to Glastonbury 2016. As

you can see, slightly overcast sky rather than Mr blue sky but we are

still here and having a party. I've overdone it, today is the first day

of the festival I've not had plastered. God love you. We are not

worried about the rain, as my grandad used to say, your skin is

waterproof, get out there and get on with it so that's pretty much the

attitude at the Glastonbury Festival and it has been a weekend. Sunday

has been a great day so far so we are going to catchy whupped with a

bit of the action from the festival site so far before we begin. --

It's been an absolute beautiful weekend, thank you very much for

joining us the day three, as I said, we have got ELO coming up, and the

Gregory Porter on the Gabi mid-stage putting some Solvite into Sunday,

good to see an even better to hear. Absolutely, this Sunday tea-time

thing has become known as the legends slot. The unofficial

headline spot coming usually about a crowd of 100,000. This year it was

Jeff Lynne's wrote ELO that we're going to get to shortly but there

are other legends on site, it is fair disabled. And in this space.

There's one playing the acoustic stage dirt and here to give us a

preview is Cyndi Lauper. -- stage tonight.

but whatever, I've got it. Your first time at Glastonbury? Yes, I'm

really excited to be here. I've never been here. I really felt like

I was missing out. I'm so glad, I just wish I had a glittery raincoat!

I did not think to bring it! I'm trying to lip read because I can't

see you now. But you are having a good time? A glittery raincoat! You

could definitely get one. We will get you one. And some wings, I need

wings. And some glittery teardrops. There is so much glitter on-site and

so many wings but if that's what you want, job done, you are sorted.

Absolutely fantastic. Thank you very much, Cyndi Lauper. The time has

come from one leading to another, let's get ready for ELO's

performance but before we get there, we are going to catch up with a

little bit of the story of how this, as Mark said, this unofficial

headline spot came to be. I can't think of a better catalogue of songs

to be beaten in this, as you will see, the hits keep on coming. We

have had a big one from Cyndi Lauper already. And plenty more to come.

This is the story of ELO's appearance at Glastonbury.

Symphonic pop rockers the Electric light Orchestra are one of the most

beloved British bands of all times. And that the baton of big haired

Brummie, Jeff Lynne, they've used raucous riffs with footstomping

strings and soundtrack the 70s. You've got your rock 'n' roll

harmonies, classical bits, stick them all together and what have you

got? ELO. ELO's first orchestral offering came in 1972.

Then they started his daddy 's stream of singles with Showdown.

Breakthrough album A New World Record set them on the road to

stardom. # It's living thing

# It is a terrible thing to lose and follow-up Out Of The Blue proved the

perfect blend of orchestral opulent and polished pop production.

# Tell us why you had to hide away for so long

# Where did we go wrong. # By the end of the 70s, ELO were the

biggest band on the planet. Their record-breaking tour came complete

with a giant flying saucer stage. And with a little help from Olivia

Newton-John, they hit number one with Xanadu in 1980.

# Xanadu. # But as 80s pop got clean cut and

cosmopolitan, ELO fell out of favour and called it a day in 1986. Jeff

Lynne turned producer on records for Tom Petty, Roy Orbison and George

Harrison. And together with Bob Dylan, they formed the most super of

supergroups, The Travelling Wilburys.

# Everybody's got somebody to lean on. #

It was almost 30 years until Jeff dusted off the aviator sunglasses

and re-formed ELO in 2014. # All over the world

# Everybody get the word. # This resurrection brought ELO's

galaxy of hits to a whole new generation. People are really going

out of their way to be nice and say, "I love you and all your stuff".

That was not happening ten years ago but it certainly is now. There is an

old saying, if you hang around long enough, you will be all right in the

end! And now, Jeff Lynne's ELO are ready to rock the Pyramid stage,

though Don your hair helmets, set phasers to stun, and prepare for a

Sunday afternoon set that promises to be out of this world.

So here we are, joining the man who has just been playing the lead and

slot at Glastonbury Festival, minutes fresh off the stage, Mr Jeff

Lynne, how are you? Not too bad. I was a bit scared before we went on

because we had never done a festival before, in the thousand years we

have been going. Except smaller ones. But this one was amazing to

look and see that many people. Everybody tells me it went down

well. So this was your festival debut? Of this size, yeah. I did

Hyde Park. That was the other one. But this one is so big. Why did you

do it? He made me do it. Your manager? My manager, yeah. He was

going to beat me up if I didn't do it. He must have persuaded you asked

why Glastonbury was important. Yes, he said it was in a really good time

slot. So we might as well do it, because we had all rehearsed and

been doing the tour. This is the 19th show on this tour. So it was a

good reason to do it, otherwise it would have meant us practising for a

month just to get it up to this level. So did you research it, have

you watched Glastonbury in the past? I have seen bits of it on the telly,

of course. I saw some of it last night. It makes me kind oh, shoot!

That is big, isn't it? At it came out fine in the end. It was fine

once I got up there. Quite incredible that someone like you,

who have had a long career, would still get nervous. I always get

nervous at that sort of thing. Like I say, I haven't had enough

experience at those. Most people just treat it like a regular gig,

but it's difficult to do that when you have only done one before. So

the likes of Dolly Parton and Lionel Richie have played this slot in the

past. Their reaction afterwards has been, wow, they have been blown

away. Do you share that feeling? Yeah, I was knocked out with the

crowd. There were so many waving and clapping and singing along. I love

that. As a songwriter, that's what you love, when everybody is singing

your song louder than you are singing it. And when you looked out,

was there anything that stands out? At one point, I saw a dingy floating

by. I saw lots of peculiar things, but I can't play them on the TV or

the radio. There were certainly some characters in the front few rows,

wearing this amazing stuff and nodding at me and doing little

puppets at me. Pretty much only at Glastonbury. Yes! And how would you

sum up your Glastonbury experience, being here with ELO? It was

fantastic. I had never set foot in the place before, so it was all a

shock to me. But I really enjoyed it, and the crowd were fabulous.

Thank you for a much. Wellies on an sticking around for the rest of the

festival? We are, unfortunately. I was going to take you to the circus

field. They will not let me stay. Jeff, thank you very much.

What a nice guy, and what an unarguable song catalogue, but what

is it about the Midlands rockers that they are so down-to-earth? All

the sabbath guys and noddy and Robert Plant, and of course, the

great Roy would. Can we have Roy would next year in the legend slots?
