Day 2: Foo Fighters Glastonbury

Hello and welcome back the Glastonbury 2017, live on BBC Two. I

have dreaded Nick Grimshaw in for a younger, better looking model. Who

can blame you? You're only human. You have been on air for most of

your adult life. Pretty much, and it feels good. So we have loads of

great stuff to bring you. The excitement gathers towards the

headline act here. Foo Fighters. Del Amitri yeah. So we are going to find

out what is happening and get the atmosphere first-hand from our

lovely woman on the ground, Jo Whiley, who has been sent into the

mosh pit, which will not be a mosh pit because there was heavy

security. It will be controlled mosh pit. Let's hand over to our chum Jo,

who is scenting the atmosphere. Massive anticipation for the arrival

of the Foo Fighters. Absolutely. If I could, I would be in that mosh

pit. But you can sense the anticipation. The state is being

set, the music is being ramped up and the flags are flying. Palpable

excitement from Foo Fighters fans. The band will be on stage and I will

bring them to you at 9.40 fight. Back to you. Thanks, Jo! We ran over

there to hear what Jo was saying. She looked very colourful. Good to

be noticed in that crowd. So we ran over there and they said to get back

here. You have had about 30 seconds off since four o'clock this

afternoon. But I can't complain, because Glastonbury has been

spectacular. And we still haven't needed wellies. It is great, because

you can walk around the outer areas. I have been up to the Healing Field

and the stone circle, the places you can't be bothered going because it

is usually too much effort. A couple got married here at the Park Stage,

Gallacher. A massive crowd wherever he goes. He still has a brooding

charisma. The man has still got it. My brother and I went to see him a

couple of weeks ago. It was just a worship fest. To see it times ten on

that stage, impressive. We're here for it, Liam. He played in

Manchester recently, it was like the return of a hero, such an exciting

night. Glad to have you back. We're going to catch up with Jo who had a

chat with him fresh off the stage. Welcome to our garden and to Liam,

who joins me now. How are you? Good, very good. You've come off the

stage. Bit spaced out. It's not a bad thing maybe. Why spaced out?

Just because you've been like held up in that room all day, so trying

to get into the zone and then you go out, loads of people there and

singing songs. It's pretty emotional thing. An extraordinary experience.

Yeah. It is extraordinary. I'll be right, I'll be back to my usual mad

self in half an hour. At the moment you're just a bit processing it.

Just locking spaced out and that jazz sheet isn helping. The stories

I've heard of people trying to come to see you, so many people trying to

see you. Dave from Foo Fighters couldn't get there. I like Dave man,

better luck next time. The fact that you were doing the gig and so many

people there, what was it like looking out to the audience?

Amazing, always nice to do. I'm made for big gigs, I'm made for small

ones as well, but the bigger the better. They don't scare me. Does

anything scare you? No. Losing my voice scares me. You know, you spend

your whole day sitting around thinking, is it going to be there

when you walk out. You think it's there. But it was there tonight, I

think. You know what I mean? That's the only thing I'm nervous about.

How did you prepare for this show? Lots of honey and apple cider

vinegar, just stuff like that. I'm behaving myself these days. You know

what I mean, as you get older, you just want to like, just - it's the

best thing ever being able to sing to loads of people. Got to behave a

bit now. It's time to take it seriously? Not too seriously. But

you've got to prepare like footballers do. But soon as the

gig's over, it's back to like being a scally wag. I imagine it was

exciting on stage and looking out and hearing people singing along.

What was the last song you did? Don't Look Back in Anger. I've never

done that before. Yeah, because like everyone's like that's their song

for the moment, with the shit that's going down in the world. I thought

if our kid's not going to do it for them, I'll do it for them. I did all

right. What are you doing after this, staying around? Yeah, I'm down

with the grime boys. Proper grime fan. I met wiley h, a chat about a

-- had a chat about a fight coming up. Met Stormzy. Heard about that

it's the new punk. I'm going to check it out. Then I'll pop over and

see the Foo Fighters. You reckon you can do this and be left alone, will

you be in disguise? No, not in disguise. Nice to be back playing

tunes to the beautiful people. Congratulations, well done Thank

Glastonbury, that's one of the joys of it. There's a variety. One thing

that people say is underrepresented over the years is metal and perhaps

extreme metal, denning metal and -- death metal and things like that.

They put that right on Thursday night. A label of that kind of music

brought it here. Let's see what happened here for Ear ache.

2017 a seminal moment for Glastonbury. The festival is

throwing open the fields for extreme metal. First up the band that

started it all. It's a bit loud! This is napalm

death. These are the daddies. These guys created the genre. Hey man, are

you all right, you just played Glastonbury myself. You are so wet.

Yeah. How do you think the crowd took, it man? Surprisingly,

actually. It's a para-Dom. Because whilst we don't deliberately set out

to shock people, needless to say the music's sonically violent. What

underpins it is peace, tolerance, equality, non-violence. We still get

a perverse kick out of like wrecking people's heads. You'll be pleased to

know that I'm basically deaf at the moment. Metallica may have headlined

the Pyramid Stage in 2014, but never before has metal at Glastonbury been

so extreme. As night fell Lucy took me to a whole new area dedicated to

metal's outer edges. Where are we? At the ear ache express in Shangri

La. A massive shindig with loads of bands to celebrate extreme metal.

Glastonbury has never had anything of this calibre. This is from the

death metal scene. It's a tribal uniform for the death metal crowd.

Is this a big thing in metal, looking scary? There's a

misconception that the metal community are really scary. Most

people have normal jobs, normal nine to five. It doesn't matter what walk

of life you're from, how old you are, what gender you are, so long as

you are happy in a mosh pit. We've got a band playing tonight

called Worm Rot. They're brutal. They've come all the way from

Singapore and they're Muslim. You look metal!

Extreme metal has finally made its way to Glastonbury after 30 years.

It's loud, and it's awesome! Long may it continue! Arghhh! I want to

hang out with him. Nice one. I think James Ballardie has gone native.

That's the beautiful thing about it, you leave real life at the gate.

Absolutely. Check into fairy land and take it where you like.

Inhibitions are left at the gate. Good man, James. We will catch up

with Yasser now who has been hanging out at cinema-geddon. I'm interested

to see this. I'm told it's like a drive-in cinema. Yeah a

drive-through of sorts, like the old days. Couples put their arms round

each other and enjoy the view. Here's Yasser.

Hi guys, yes, I'm here, Joe is with me, one of the artists. What's the

concept? The idea is it's like a mutated drive-in cinema. We've

parked all these cars out here and people come and sit there and put

the head phones on and watch the screen. That is the biggest screen

I've ever seen in my life. I didn't know they make them this big. It's

huge. What I love about this place, every car has its own

characteristics. Talk to us about that. This is the rolls rust. You

don't often see a rusty one. This is the royal car, which we drove Prince

Edward into the Olympic Stadium at the closing ceremony. That's the

glitter bug. The Messerschmitt over here. And

this is one of my favourites. This is just a car in a hole. Settled

down here, get your headphones. , As does the seats? Adjust them, turn on

the air conditioning. This is one of my favourite places in the whole of

Glastonbury. We are going to carry on and watch this film. Over to you

Cineramageddon. Talking about having a choice of viewing, I spoke to my

family today. My wife said, we haven't seen it so far. We sat and

watched it last month, but the kid said, shall we watch love Island

instead? So thanks, that is where I am in the pecking order. Well, we

are here at Glastonbury and having a wonderful time. Well going to enjoy

some music now a guy who it is safe to say the whole of the scene is

rooting for and you will hear why. And with a heads up for some strong

The peoples champ, that was Stormzy on BBC Two. Apologies if you lost us

for a second. We are very much alive. Had a technical issue but

it's all good now. So the satellite went down during Stormzy, but we got

an engineer out equipped with a monkey wrench. That was a song by

someone, wasn't it? Was it the Foo Fighters? This is a well constructed

link that throws us to Jo Whiley in the pit. Let's see how the mood is

fermenting down there. The mood is ridiculous down here at

the moment. There is a lot of chanting and singing going along.

People are desperate for the band to come on stage. And they are very

excited. Let's hear the story of the Foo Fighters. It's been almost 20

years since the Foo Fighters took to the stage at Worthy Farm. The last

Glastonbury appearance was way back in 1998. We are on the Main Stage,

but there was some Euro cup final soccer thing happening, so we played

in the pouring rain to not a lot of people. To each other. But over the

last two decades, the band have established themselves as the

princes of alternative rock. The Foos began life as Nirvana drummer

Dave Grohl's solo project of self penned songs. Stepping out from

behind the skin 's comedy played every instrument on their celebrated

self titled debut. # Tricky second album the colour and

shape spawned a rock outs... And singalong stadium anthems. Donatella

Hawkins was installed as the New Statesman. Taylor, the new drummer,

has given everything a new spot. And the Foos continued their journey to

sky-high stardom. They topped the UK charts in 2002 with fourth album one

by one. The band have bagged 11 Grammys. They have clocked up eight

studio albums. And have sold out stadiums across the globe. In 2015,

they were all set to headline the Pyramid Stage. But at a gig in

Sweden, Dave's online sat-nav had a blip, resulting in a lower limb

disaster. I think I just broke my leg. Nonetheless, he rocks on and

finished the show. We were looking forward to playing Glastonbury, and

I guess it was just a few days before that I broke my leg. So they

moved Florence to the headliner. And they did a version of times like

these. I remember I was in my wheelchair with my leg up, and I

heard it online and went, she is singing! Florence And The Machine

wowed the Somerset crowd, but the Foos promised to return. That the

festival. That's the one. Sa tonight, the stars have aligned and

finally, the Foo Fighters are rocking the Pyramid Stage. What it

meant to be? Of course it was. I think it's safe to say the Foos are

going to make a lot of people very happy tonight. It's kind of

emotional for him to get here finally. So here we go. Here is Jo

to set it all in motion. They are quite a rowdy bunch. The people down

here are waiting for Foo Fighters. But they are behaving themselves now

because they know Foo Fighters will be here imminently. Dave Grohl has

said this gig tonight has immense meaning. He said this one has more

meaning than any gig Foo Fighters have done before, that this is more

than a gig, this is personal. He said he was moved to tears when he

watched Florence And The Machine perform times like these when he had

a broken leg and could not be here to play on the Pyramid Stage. So he

has waited for two years to get back on two feat to be able to walk out

on this date and be able to perform and give Glastonbury the kind of

show they want. Of course, the band have been saying they have a lot of

friends, so we are excited to see what will be happening on stage.

There might be some colourful fireworks in the sky towards the end

of the set. And there will certainly be hit after hit. You have probably

heard that everybody here is in fine voice, so they will be singing along

to every song they know. The band are about to walk out on stage, so,

Saturday night, Glastonbury Festival, your Pyramid Stage

headliners. There might be some swearing. Of course there will be.

It is the Foo Fighters! They will be walking out now. Enjoy the whole set

and sing along wherever you are at home. This is going to be a lot of

fun. I'm about two years late tonight...

It was such a brilliant set. I was lucky enough to sneak out and watch

it from the front, Stormzy on the Other Stage earlier. If you're

watching earlier, there was a lot of talk on Twitter about how he broke

BBC Two with some technical difficulties, so we were reassuring

part of the set. Just a reminder that you can catch up with
