Earthy. Patchoulie. The fragrance of humanity. Cows. Very good. Depending

:00:00.:00:21.

on where you are it smells like... Joy. You don't want to know. The

:00:22.:00:31.

smell of funk. What does Glastonbury smell of? Beautiful people covered

:00:32.:00:32.

in... Welcome back to the first night of

:00:33.:00:53.

our Glastonbury coverage and as you join us to paraphrase the Specials

:00:54.:00:57.

this festival is coming like a Ghost Town. It's quite quiet behind us.

:00:58.:01:11.

It's only one place that people are? A quiet scene at the park. Everybody

:01:12.:01:17.

is at the Pyramid Stage. Sometimes you get one performance that gets

:01:18.:01:20.

the attention. You focus in on it. 20 years since we were here for a

:01:21.:01:23.

wet one with Radiohead, they're back. The opposite of this year

:01:24.:01:26.

weather wise. They certainly are. This set has been going for a little

:01:27.:01:31.

while. We're going to be rewinding time and bringing it to you from the

:01:32.:01:34.

beginning. Before we get, there let's turn back the clock again.

:01:35.:01:38.

They went on half an hour ago, before we see that, the full

:01:39.:01:43.

performance, let's look at a potted history of thissess teemed

:01:44.:01:51.

Oxfordshire band. From pop grunge perfection to

:01:52.:01:56.

sublime electrosound escapes, since getting together in 1985, Radiohead

:01:57.:02:00.

have become one of the most extraordinary live bands on the

:02:01.:02:09.

planet.? -- planet. Tonight they're headlining for the third time. The

:02:10.:02:14.

:02:15.:02:18.

festivals really, Glastonbury. We've grown up with it. We grew up going

:02:19.:02:23.

to it. It was and is still the biggest show you'll do. Their first

:02:24.:02:35.

appearance was back in 1994. Sandwiched between I think oasis and

:02:36.:02:41.

Blur. What happened this them? Did they do anything after that? Yeah.

:02:42.:02:48.

Yeah. The undeniable power of that first show was just a prelude to

:02:49.:02:54.

their headline set three years later, shortly after the release of

:02:55.:03:06.

album OK Computer. We were bricking. It Yeah, yeah,

:03:07.:03:10.

that's my memory. That would be probably the right term technology.

:03:11.:03:18.

I do remember just that real sense of impoter syndrome, they can't be

serious, us doing the Saturday night? It was very wet, muddy.

:03:24.:03:38.

Rain-o-head. On top of the wrath of Mother Nature, band be we set by

technical difficulties. Neck nickically it was a -- technically

:03:44.:03:48.

it was a disaster. Tom came over me and said, "I'm going off after the

:03:49.:03:53.

next song." I remember coming off and thinking we probably had done

:03:54.:04:00.

one of our worst shows ever. Thankfully Tom stuck around. It

:04:01.:04:05.

turned out to be one of the greatest nights in Glastonbury history.

:04:06.:04:10.

Radiohead played the top slot again in 2003. And did a secret gig at the

:04:11.:04:21.

park in to 11. But 20 years since their water shed 1997 show, they're

:04:22.:04:26.

back to headline the Pyramid Stage. It's the greatest festival. It's the

:04:27.:04:31.

one where you leave on a Monday and you have your faith restored in

humanity. # If you could take it all back

:46:40.:50:59.

Thank you, everyone. Thank you for listening.

:51:00.:56:17.

Oh, yes, thank you. We hope the rest of your weekend is most excellent.

:56:18.:01:35.

We thank you for coming to this field to listen to us this evening.

:01:36.:01:38.

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE . Hopefully we'll see you in some

:01:39.:01:47.

other fields over the weekend. We appreciate it. I don't really have

:01:48.:01:51.

any words. I'm useless at this stuff.

:01:52.:02:26.

Thank you again, everybody. Have a really great night.

:02:27.:06:53.

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE Enjoy yourselves. Good night.

# I've given all I can, but we're still on the payroll

:08:51.:09:05.

CROWD: # For a minute there, I lost myself

:09:06.:11:36.

# I lost myself... CROWD CONTINUE TO SING They didn't

:11:37.:13:00.

play for long, did they? I thought they could have done a few songs

:13:01.:13:05.

more. Could have tried a bit harder. I thought they were amazing.

:13:06.:13:10.

Incredibly impressive. Didn't you? Yeah, no, absolutely loved it. I

:13:11.:13:14.

know there will be conjecture and debate, people saying we just wanted

:13:15.:13:17.

all the hits and nothing else. Oh, my God, they are so impressive. When

:13:18.:13:21.

they play and those songs. I could not fault that prnks. It meant the

:13:22.:13:25.

-- performance. It meant the most to them as well. They constructed how

:13:26.:13:28.

that went together. You could see how much it meant to them. Loved it.

:13:29.:13:33.

I don't care about people who didn't. I think that Radiohead at

:13:34.:13:38.

Glastonbury, if they had just done the hits, I would have been

:13:39.:13:41.

disappointed with that. You want a surprise in the set list. My

:13:42.:13:45.

favourite song tonight was Nude. It was stew pen does. It isn't one of

:13:46.:13:52.

the biggest songs. If you don't like Radiohead, you will see something

:13:53.:13:55.

else. Which is what my children did in the end. Getting some reviews

:13:56.:13:59.

coming through. We're doing the late shift tonight. It's Joe and Mark and

:14:00.:14:03.

we're bringing you lots of things. Lots of the highlights of the day.

:14:04.:14:09.

Flaming Lips are still here on the Park stage. Outplaying Radiohead!

:14:10.:14:15.

We're going to big alternative to Radiohead tonight and watch a bit of

:14:16.:14:26.

Major Laser. Make some noise!

:14:27.:14:48.

# You're here but you've been missing for some time now

:14:49.:14:51.

# Every time I see you it's a # My love

:14:52.:15:10.

# Don't mess me up. You might recognise Dua Lipa, who

:15:11.:17:47.

was here earlier when I was doing the show with Huw. She joined Major

:17:48.:17:51.

Lazer on the other stayed a while ago. That was a very different

:17:52.:17:56.

flavour to Radiohead. That is the beauty of Glastonbury. You can watch

:17:57.:18:01.

Radiohead, Major Lazer or go elsewhere. Flaming lips had an

:18:02.:18:05.

extraordinary show. I watched a bit of that. I just missed a couple of

:18:06.:18:14.

Radiohead songs. Call yourself a Radiohead fan? We have a performance

:18:15.:18:21.

in our studio area. These two are going to play for us now. This is

:18:22.:18:24.

Nadia Rose. Big up my mum and dad. Guess who?

:18:25.:18:48.

Like you never left. I rose from the dead. I'm your worst nightmare.

:18:49.:19:05.

Wow, she's sick and she's bad. She sings and she wraps. And I'm with my

:19:06.:19:25.

team. I'm rolling ten girl up in that skwod. That's what? That skwod.

:19:26.:19:42.

We always go green so we pretty much peas in a pod. I was at the scene,

:19:43.:19:48.

had to flee from the cops. I go inside with no keys for the locks.

:19:49.:20:01.

Nobody bad like us. Let me see you brush your guns.

:20:02.:20:13.

I'm rollin' ten girl up in that skwod

:20:14.:20:15.

I'm rollin' ten girl up in that skwod

I'm rolling ten girl up in that skwody

:20:22.:20:41.

Came tru with the clan, came tru with the posse

:20:42.:20:44.

I came with Mary Jane, some came in here with Molly

:20:45.:20:46.

Nuff' girl in it, that's the way you roll skwody

:20:47.:20:49.

Nuff' girl in it, that's the way you roll out

:20:50.:20:51.

If the lighting's good, you have to get your phone out

:20:52.:20:54.

Bare skin, teeth when we pose for the photos

:20:55.:20:56.

Some girl are braided, some girl are in cornrows

:20:57.:20:58.

But still gwan dread if we have to The heart is built like a statue

:20:59.:21:01.

Been on my grind like my back tooth, yeah

:21:02.:21:04.

Take out the time with a fat zoot Step on the gas hit

:21:05.:21:07.

I'm rollin' ten girl up in that skwod

:21:08.:21:17.

Thank you very much! That was Nadia Rose. Coming up in the next however

:21:18.:21:42.

long we have to spend together this evening, we will bring you some

:21:43.:21:45.

Clean Bandit and also Lorde, who was playing earlier on the other state

:21:46.:21:49.

and lots more. We have more acoustics as well. From darling side

:21:50.:21:51.

as well. So, the Flaming Lips did an

:21:52.:22:05.

incredible show, just drawing to a close on the Park Stage. Here they

:22:06.:22:10.

are from earlier with a version of Space Oddity.

:22:11.:23:10.

# Planet Earth is blue And there's nothing I can do.

:27:08.:28:21.

It just never gets boring, watching him do that thing. The first time I

:28:22.:28:28.

saw it was at Glastonbury festival, just spellbound. And still to this

:28:29.:28:32.

day, Flaming Lips, and that was their version of Space Oddity. We

:28:33.:28:37.

are not far from some Anderson pack. Sleaford Mods as well.

:28:38.:28:49.

Didn't you share a car with when Coyle as well? So there is loads of

:28:50.:28:55.

stuff happening here apart from the bands on the main stages. Our friend

:28:56.:29:00.

Yasser has been out and about, investigating ten years of Glasto

:29:01.:29:01.

Latino. I've been to the Glade and now I'm

:29:02.:29:11.

in Glasto Latino. Alison is with me. What is going on? What is happening?

:29:12.:29:19.

This is Glasto Latino, one of the hottest spots on site. This is where

:29:20.:29:23.

you get Latin music at its best. It's one thing that we can add to

:29:24.:29:28.

the festival that adds spice, passion and flavour. I love it. The

:29:29.:29:33.

energy is electric in here. How long have you been going for? This is our

:29:34.:29:38.

tenth anniversary. We've got the best bands ever. These guys are from

:29:39.:29:47.

Panama. They play Cuban music. Wow. You had to bring themming over to

:29:48.:29:53.

Glastonbury -- them. What has the reception been from people over ten

:29:54.:30:00.

years? Fantastic. Listen, I can't help but move my hips. I think we

:30:01.:30:03.

have to dance. It's the only way now. Shall we go in? OK.

:30:04.:30:12.

That's the great thing. There are so many things happening. People are

:30:13.:30:16.

having their own little festival without going near Radiohead or

:30:17.:30:22.

anything else. There's a club down here calling funkingham Palace,

:30:23.:30:25.

where people have to go in on their hands and knees. We should go in

:30:26.:30:29.

there. That's a date. Can you see here, a lot of the stages have

:30:30.:30:34.

closed down, the party - not a party, people are still having fun.

:30:35.:30:38.

You can see all the dramatics over there. The flames. Yes. If you want

:30:39.:30:44.

to look at the stages, we're covering over 100 stages across this

:30:45.:30:47.

weekend. All you have to do is go and check it out at

:30:48.:30:52.

bbc.co.uk/Glastonbury. Tons for you to go and see. Next we're going over

to Anderson Paak, this guy is amazing live as hopefully we have

:31:00.:31:02.

captured one of his best bits. See what you think.

:31:03.:31:22.

Any sexy ladies want to slow dance to this.

:31:23.:31:34.

# I want you by my lonesome in this crowded space.

:31:35.:31:40.

# It's easier to hold some, when no-one's in the way

:31:41.:31:44.

# Well, if no-one's in the running for the part

:31:45.:31:47.

# I'd love to pick a day # To show you the main room.

:31:48.:31:52.

# I don't need a bouquet # I just need a proper space

:31:53.:31:56.

# Homey three blocks away # I got bottles for days

:31:57.:32:00.

# I got tropical haze # Go ahead and wave bye.

:32:01.:32:07.

# Baby there's room in here # Just enough for two in here

:32:08.:32:12.

# Ain't nobody but you and me in here

:32:13.:32:14.

# Yeah, what can we do in here? # What can we do?

:32:15.:32:20.

# As crazy as it may seem, it's not too hard to read

:32:21.:32:25.

# It's too many ifs and maybes, and not enough certainty

:32:26.:32:27.

# Well, if no-one's putting numbers on the board

:32:28.:32:30.

# I'd love to take a swing # Might even graze you

:32:31.:32:35.

# But I don't mean any harm # I'm just speaking my mind

:32:36.:32:39.

# Take a look at that moon # About as bright as your eyes

:32:40.:32:42.

# We got plenty of space # Go ahead and recline

:32:43.:32:47.

# Take a puff of that # Get a sip of this wine

:32:48.:32:51.

# Glastonbury! # Can yous baby there's room in here

Apologies if that link started slightly oddly. We were distracted

APPLAUSE STUDIO: What a showman, hey. The

:43:00.:43:03.

funny thing with them was if you can imagine this, we had Elbow as the

:43:04.:43:08.

surprise guests earlier on. It was beautiful and the mood was magical

:43:09.:43:12.

and it was gorgeous. Flaming Lips were going to come on and then

:43:13.:43:18.

Sleaford MoDs came on, great. They cast their own spell. Introduced by

:43:19.:43:24.

Lord bucket head who stood against Theresa May in the Maidenhead

:43:25.:43:27.

election. Great. So much going on. I went across to see a bit of Flaming

:43:28.:43:32.

Lips. I was distracted into a little stage I didn't know existed. There

:43:33.:43:37.

was a great band from Northern Ireland. They were new to me called

:43:38.:43:40.

Ruse. Rews. They Ireland. They were new to me called

:43:41.:43:54.

Ruse. Rews. ewanted to call them fuse and troos, but Rews. James went

:43:55.:44:00.

out to this magical area called the common and he met with Victoria clip

:44:01.:44:08.

slayer. -- Sinclair. They're exploring the link between rave

:44:09.:44:11.

culture and chezmanism. Creator Bob, give us strength. Use

:44:12.:44:38.

this medicine to help unify us and see things to enlighten us. If we

:44:39.:44:44.

all just take a sip together, invite the medicine into your body, into

:44:45.:44:52.

your spirit. It is surprisingly chunky, but I am feeling a little

:44:53.:44:57.

pepped up. What is in it? There are ceremonial Krakow from the Amazon,

:44:58.:45:06.

then some medicines and summer mead, a ancient drink. Whenever I drink

:45:07.:45:13.

this medicine, I definitely felt a connection to my ancestors back

:45:14.:45:27.

home. I think the cacao is kicking in. Where are we going now? To the

:45:28.:45:35.

temple. What do you do, Sue? I'm a razor. We need the vibes. We are a

:45:36.:45:41.

massive family. What can we expect from this place behind me? This is a

:45:42.:45:47.

techno- shaman paradise. There is a thing about repetitive beats that

:45:48.:45:51.

the rave culture has, and the shamanic drumming of the journeying

:45:52.:45:54.

is very similar. The beats per minute are very similar. The spirit

:45:55.:46:01.

that the tribal elders get into, where they commune with nature, is

:46:02.:46:05.

similar to these trancelike state that people have been evolving into

:46:06.:46:10.

at raves. When you're in the rave and the crescendo is coming up,

:46:11.:46:16.

described that to me. Orgasm! Let's get in there.

:46:17.:46:26.

There is a lot of energy this year. I have definitely found my spiritual

:46:27.:46:48.

side. Now I am just going to get lost in the beat.

:46:49.:46:57.

So there you go, all explained, the hitherto unsuspected link between

:46:58.:47:00.

ancient shaman is and rave culture. So now we know. You know those

:47:01.:47:05.

shopping channels you watch late into the night? That is what this is

:47:06.:47:12.

now. So we are showing over 100, although you can choose from 100

:47:13.:47:18.

different performances. All you have to do is go to BBC .co .uk/

:47:19.:47:22.

Glastonbury and when you are there, you can choose any stage. There are

:47:23.:47:28.

six stages. There is the Pyramid Stage, The Other Stage, the BBC

:47:29.:47:32.

Introducing stage, the West Holts Stage, the Park Stage, which is

:47:33.:47:42.

where we are. Anyway, get your device or your tablet and choose

:47:43.:47:46.

your stage, click on it and then you can stream the performance as it is

:47:47.:47:51.

going out live. We are also selling these tablets. Villa and the clothes

:47:52.:47:54.

on our back. We are taking orders. Anyway, one of

:47:55.:48:06.

the performances this afternoon was when Lorde was playing on The Other

:48:07.:48:09.

Stage. Quite an interesting performance. I don't know whether we

:48:10.:48:12.

have captured the dancers. Hopefully, we have.

And there were the dance verse, as I said, captured in those boxes. She

is so good. Her album is out now. This is her first Glastonbury. What

a great talent. Very charismatic performer. A smart woman. That was

Lorde. It is the year of the onesie, isn't it? I know. People are

:56:52.:56:57.

singalong passionately. There is a lot of joy in the crowds, and it is

:56:58.:57:01.

a very bouncy atmosphere. Everybody has been dealing with a lot of dark

:57:02.:57:05.

stuff, and that is the joy of Glastonbury. You leave the world

:57:06.:57:10.

behind. Hopefully, you can enter our bubble for this weekend and enjoy

the music. I think you will enjoy this. These guys are amazing. We

Thank you. They sing like angels. In the rain as well. You will be

delighted to know the rain has started as Glastonbury. We've been

Glastonbury without. It the wellies will be out in force tomorrow. I

:00:50.:00:53.

think so. Probably. Let's go back to something earlier, this was the band

:00:54.:00:58.

who played on the main stage ahead of Radiohead. This is such a spell

:00:59.:01:02.

binding, wonderful performance, it is the XX, I'm sure you're going to

:01:03.:01:08.

love this. In front of people watching this, I was, they said, I

:01:09.:01:12.

love these guys. They're one of my favourite bands are. They called the

XX or double X. I think they're called the XX. We've checked,

STUDIO: I thought that was a moment for them today. I mean, there is

:09:01.:09:05.

something about the XX, they just feel so now - they feel what is a

:09:06.:09:11.

band should look and sound like right now. I think they're

:09:12.:09:13.

brilliant. They're one of the best bands in the UK that. Was such a

:09:14.:09:17.

great set from them. They've grown in confidence. They have and learned

:09:18.:09:22.

to enjoy it I think. They've been friends since they were at school.

:09:23.:09:24.

There's something about that connection between them that you

:09:25.:09:28.

really feel. They write such heart breaking songs. Those songs are so

:09:29.:09:32.

painful to listen to. I loved them today. Yeah, that was good. I'm

:09:33.:09:36.

going to have nothing else to wear tomorrow. I'm wearing everything in

:09:37.:09:41.

one day because the rain. This is multilayering. Over now to the John

:09:42.:09:46.

Peel Stage where you will now enjoy Clean Bandit

:09:47.:10:01.

For the single mums out there going through frustration, clean bandit.

:10:02.:10:15.

# She's gone astray, so far away from her father's daughter

:10:16.:10:20.

# She just wants a life for a baby # All on her own

:10:21.:10:23.

# She's got to save her. # She tells him, oh, love,

:10:24.:10:30.

no one's ever gonna hurt you, love # She tells him, your life ain't

:10:31.:10:33.

gonna be nothing like my life # You're gonna grow

:10:34.:10:42.

and have a good life love way too early

:10:43.:10:44.

# # I'm gonna give you all of my love

:10:45.:11:47.

Nobody matters like you." # (Oh-badda-bang-bang-bang,

:11:48.:11:52.

all right then) # Lift up your head,

:11:53.:12:08.

lift it up to the sky # Angels surround you,

:12:09.:12:23.

just dry your eye # He don't know he is

:12:24.:12:27.

safe when she says # No one's ever gonna

:12:28.:12:38.

hurt you, love "# Your life ain't gonna be

:12:39.:12:41.

Nothing like my life (stay) You're gonna grow

:12:42.:12:52.

And have a good life # (Oh-badda-bang-bang-bang,

:12:53.:12:53.

all right then) # Lift up your head,

:12:54.:13:16.

lift it up to the sky Make some noise, Glastonbury! That

:13:17.:14:02.

was Clean Bandit doing Rockabye. Really good song. It is not just

:14:03.:14:07.

raining here, it is sheeting down. There are torrents of water outside.

:14:08.:14:12.

That is why we have moved inside. Cosy in here. Legend is an obvious

:14:13.:14:18.

work, but Kris Kristofferson could be described as one. I played him on

:14:19.:14:24.

my radio show last night as the last song. He is a legend. He was 81

:14:25.:14:30.

yesterday. This is his Glastonbury debut. There are a couple of other

:14:31.:14:33.

legends knocking around. Johnny Depp will be in evidence during this, and

:14:34.:14:38.

Brad Pitt is also here. He watched a bit of Kris Kristofferson and he is

:14:39.:14:42.

having an amazing festival because he fulfilled the ambition of meeting

:14:43.:14:49.

Jo Whiley. Imagine how lucky he was feeling. Here is Kris Kristofferson,

:14:50.:14:52.

not Brad Pitt. # With no way to hold my head

:14:53.:15:45.

that didn't hurt # And the beer I had for breakfast

:15:46.:15:49.

wasn't bad # Then I fumbled in my closet

:15:50.:15:51.

through my clothes # Then I washed my face

:15:52.:15:56.

and combed my hair # Stumbled down the stairs

:15:57.:16:02.

to meet the day # I'd smoked my mind

:16:03.:16:04.

the night before # With cigarettes and songs

:16:05.:16:06.

that I'd been pickin' # But I lit my first

:16:07.:16:08.

and watched a small kid # Playing with a can

:16:09.:16:11.

that he was kicking # And caught the Sunday smell of

:16:12.:16:13.

someone fryin' chicken # And oh, it took me back

:16:14.:16:19.

to somethin' # That I'd lost somewhere, somehow

:16:20.:16:21.

along the way # I'm wishing, Lord,

:16:22.:16:29.

that I was stoned # And there ain't nothin'

:16:30.:16:40.

short of dyin' I can't think what song I'm going to

:16:41.:17:52.

do. What did I just do? Hey, welcome Johnny Depp.

:17:53.:17:57.

Oh, man, what an honour to be on the same stage as you.

:17:58.:18:33.

# I took myself down to the Tally Ho Tavern

:18:34.:18:35.

# And I sat me down by a tender young maiden

:18:36.:18:40.

# Whose eyes were as dark as her hair

:18:41.:18:42.

# And as I was searching from bottle to bottle

:18:43.:18:44.

# That silver tongued devil just slipped from the shadows

:18:45.:18:48.

# I said hey, little girl, don't you know he's the devil

:18:49.:18:52.

# He's everything that I ain't Hiding intentions of evil

:18:53.:18:55.

# All he's good for is getting in trouble

:18:56.:19:09.

# And shiftin' his share of the blame

:19:10.:19:13.

# And some people swear he's my double

:19:14.:19:19.

# But the silver-tongued devil's go nothing to lose

:19:20.:19:29.

# We take our own chances and pay our own dues

:19:30.:19:41.

Thank you! My hero! I can't be sure, but it looked like

:19:42.:20:16.

Johnny Depp came on as a surprise to Kris Kristofferson. Very much taken

:20:17.:20:23.

by surprise. Oh, Johnny Depp! Now, we are going back to the John Peel

:20:24.:20:27.

Stage for a band that I love. We have had them on our radio show on 6

:20:28.:20:33.

Music. They are so young! Precociously talented.

:20:34.:21:12.

# why do I have to follow you to know just who I am?

:21:13.:21:25.

# I have enough previous worlds to know which one I'm in.

:21:26.:21:40.

These words, these words Mean nothing to my soul

:21:41.:21:45.

These words, these words Save only to fill up a hole

:21:46.:22:00.

# Why can't I flow softly downstream Without the violent surf?

:22:01.:22:13.

# These words, these words Mean nothing to my soul

:22:14.:22:31.

I mean, stupidly talented. They make a lot of sense when you see them

:22:32.:24:30.

live. That was the Lemon Twigs. That is almost it from us. We will be

:24:31.:24:35.

back tomorrow with Lauren love-in and Nick Grimshaw. They will be here

:24:36.:24:41.

from 5.30. I will turn up for the odd link. We have all sorts tomorrow

:24:42.:24:46.

including Foo Fighters and Katy Perry. They are great bedfellows. I

:24:47.:24:51.

will be on the radio between four and seven o'clock tomorrow with Liam

:24:52.:24:54.

Gallagher. Hope you enjoyed everything you watched tonight and

:25:50.:26:09.

They're trying to see if Dizzee stays true to his grammar

:26:10.:26:16.

Being a celebrity don't mean shit to me

:26:17.:26:20.
