Emeli Sande & Ed Sheeran Hackney Weekend 2012

Hello! We are kicking off the festival season for BBC Three this

summer. Along with Radio 1 we are bringing you something bigger and

better than ever. It is Radio 1's Hackney Weekend. We are live from

East London. Now our line-up is impressive. We have UK-based and

international artists performing all day. Tonight you are going to

see the whole of the headlineer set from Jay-Z. There is a lot of build

up, the main stage behind us where Nicki Minaj will be. Of course,

Jay-Z will be there later on. also have The Vaccines and Kasabian

hitting the stage soon there. Look at the site it is huge. If you move

along you can see the 1 Extra tent where will.i.am is performing and

next to that, the Dance Tent where Calvin Harris is raving. It is an

impressive sight, but we can't lie, the coats are on. It is an amazing

sight behind us. Also, in amongst it all, somewhere, Gemma should be

there. Where are you? I am here in the heart of Hackney 2012, it is

amazing. So far I have caught up with the band, spoken with the

lovely Emeli, but my fingers are tightly crossed to meet the Barbie

herself, Nicki Minaj. I can't wait for Jay-Z's set, I have heard of

something that could blow your mind, perhaps guests, who knows? Lovely,

OK, well, we are in Hackney for the Hackney Weekend. It is in East

London. I have put together a package why we love Hackney so much.

Personally? No, not personally, but it is good. Where is Hackney?

North-east London. The heart of London, basically. You get to

Hackney by the 38 bus coming from Piccadilly, or the 254 from

Stamford Hill. Straight to Stratford and change. Or get in a

cab and tell them to take you to Hackney. They will take you.

best way to get to Hackney is in a Hackney Carriage. A little bit of

history, Shakespeare's first plays were played in Shoreditch. The GP

Powder plot was plotted in Hoxton. Hackney comes from the Dutch word,

horse, it drew the carriages, that is where the Hackney carriages come

from. There are so many parks in Hackney. Many celebrities have come

out of the area. Danny Defoe... MarcBolan. And I grew up in Hackney.

Throughout history it has been known for being a bit edgy. East

London for me is very hard-working, very working-class. It is not the

most glamorous part of the world to live in. Definitely not. It is a

melting pot of all different people. Creed, colour. The key for me being

about brought up in Hackney, I saw the world on my street. Cypriots,

Greek, for instance, Chinese, just everything on my road. Hackney is

at the epicentre of multiculturalism. One of the best

things about Hackney is the pie and the marsh shop. You get any food

you want and the best food. market was the first to introduce

the west Indian food. There are so many foods here, Caribbean, Turkish,

Indian. Hackney is up there with the food. There is definitely lingo.

You do from East London first, then it travels elsewhere. What is

happening? What is up? What is good? How are you doing? Leave it!

Apples and pears, stairs. Bees and honey, money. It is very much on

the edge of fashion and music. It has a natural vibe. There is a lot

of artistic value in the area. A lot of what I talk about in Hackney

are my experiences. Many people think that the heart of music is in

East London. I'm sure people say the same about their area, but we

knew. We had the swagger. To sum up Hackney in one word... Talent.

Beautiful. Home. That is what I think of when I think of it. It is

a wonderful, great place to be. Not being biased. Hackney forever,

ain't it?! And that is why we love Hackney so much. There were some

beautiful shots, I don't know if you saw them, helicopter shots of

the whole site, look a that. That is insane. That is Tim West Wood on

a helicopter. I thought so. And we are so close to the Olympic scythe.

There is a whole air of excitement in Hackney. And one thing I did not

count on, there is a lot of wildlife. Tell everyone what

happened today? On the route today, I was excited to spot a heron in

one of the local streams, which I was excited about. Everyone talks

about the obvious things in Hackney, herons do not get a look in. I tell

you what, let's watch something that is very, very exciting. A

young lady who is Hackney born and bred, who has been working with the

Hackney Academy and getting excited about the weekend. It is the

But you do look similar! obviously a Hackney boy? Yes, I am.

It must be amazing to have this in your back garden? Well, I was

coming in the helicopter, but Hackney has never been on the map

like this. Since growing up, it has always been understated things

happening in the area. The most we got was a cheap fun fair, not even

with the rides. Did you visit the Marshes as a kid? I did I, but to

see this is amazing. You said you are grown up now. You are an am

bass -- for Hackney. What do you have to do for that? Well, of

course, I have never been an embassador for anything, so to be

an ambassador for Hackney it feels like wow, look how far I have come.

As an artist, also as a person. To have this kind of an honour. So,

yeah, I'm loving it, man. I'm happy. It is rewarding to give back to the

area that you grew up, to the kids who live here now? Yes, ertime. Not

too long ago we did a documentary with Plan B and Leona Lewis. We did

a support programme with the young kids. They are performing here

tomorrow as well. I can't wait for that. We will hear more about that.

have nowhere to be? Now, in the lead-up to the Hackney Weekend, we

opened up the Hackney Academy, that gave an amazing opportunity for the

young people in the area to meet some of their heroes and ask them

anything that they wanted. So many people were involved, Plan B, Flo

Rida, they were asked all sorts of questions, so, let's see what the

Hackney Academy is all about. Radio 1 and 1 Extra Hackney Academy

is a chance for young people to get involved. To meet the experts who

are interested in what they are doing, so that they can learn for

themselves, to learn from the real people. Various people have passed

through the doors of theEd a academy. We have had Tinchy Stryder,

Superintendent Ali Dizaei and Usher, to maim but a few. The purpose of

this incredible exercise is to prepare you for the future, to be

what you want to be. This is the opportunity. They are providing you

with an eye to see forward. It is good, you can see the passion. They

were asking questions, clever questions that you need answers to.

I wanted advice on PR companies, how you dealt with it in the early

stages of your career. At that point get a manager. He is supposed

to know your worth and why. What else can you do to stand out?

have to find out what you do better than anybody else. Hard work pays

off. Nothing is impossible. Think big. It is an amazing place. We had

the pleasure of going there a few times, holding Q and As. It is very

inspirational. It was. It is difficult to do worthy things

without being patronising, but it was an amazing thing for the young

people to come in and do something different. On the main stage behind

I saw you earlier with the Rizzle Kicks, I know you love them.

They were great. Example was very good.

He was on before you? Yeah, he made everyone bounce. That was a scary

thing as I have no songs to force the floor orpbl small bumps.

But the thing is that main stage is a huge stage and really tall. Did

you get a sense of how many people are there? You must get to the

point where you can't see the people in the back? It is a

daunting thing to do, but it is an experience, but being one man with

a guitar, I have not done many shows like this. So I'm still

getting used to it. Do you prefer the intimate shows to

the big festivals? I wouldn't be able to tell you. I love the

intimate shows, but this is the first open-air main festival I have

done. This is properly huge. Ask me next year.

You got the guitars back? They were lost? They got lost, but I found

them. Where? I lost them on the Detroit

to Paris. I found them in Paris. Did you kick off? There is not much

you can do. Getting angry, that is not going to help. I am a level guy.

When it is lost it is well, that is bad. Then I was tweeting about it

and they turned up. So it was OK. Being in Hackney, we have artists

from the area performing. Leona Lewis, Labrinth and Plan B. What do

you think it is with the area that has spawned so much talent? I think

there is talent in lots of different areas. I could not tell

you. There are so many areas around England that have so much talent.

Today is high lighting Hackney talent, so that is good.

Also, the Queen loves you? Officially, but I don't think she

watched the set. Apparently she loved it.
