0:15:230:15:24

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:15:260:15:29

Thank you!

0:15:330:15:35

The amazing, the wonderful Sir Tom Jones with Take My Love!

0:15:350:15:40

Thank you, Sir Tom Jones.

0:15:410:15:43

All right, so I'm pleased that we're all here on New Year's Eve

0:15:440:15:48

and I just hope you'll notice that the man who was playing the drums,

0:15:480:15:53

because it's this same man that has played on, unbelievably,

0:15:530:15:57

all 23 Hootenannies and I've been playing with this amazing drummer,

0:15:570:16:01

I think you'll agree, the man that has been setting the pulse

0:16:010:16:04

for New Year's Eve and for me all these years.

0:16:040:16:06

The most incredible drummer perhaps you will ever see,

0:16:060:16:09

ladies and gentlemen.

0:16:090:16:11

But wait, there's more than this.

0:16:110:16:14

Because, to me, we were looking at our diaries

0:16:140:16:16

and I realised that on the 31st of December, in 1977,

0:16:160:16:21

was the day that we first met, in a stinking rehearsal -

0:16:210:16:24

we've got the photograph there -

0:16:240:16:26

where we first met in this horrible rehearsal room...

0:16:260:16:30

That's me dressed as a woman and that's him there.

0:16:300:16:33

If you could show the people that.

0:16:330:16:35

And this was an incredible meeting because from that day

0:16:350:16:38

we've been working together ever since,

0:16:380:16:40

playing in some of the worst places, sleeping in the backs of vans.

0:16:400:16:44

And finally, tonight, something like this,

0:16:440:16:46

playing to you and all the people in this room,

0:16:460:16:49

is like a highlight for us.

0:16:490:16:51

And on top of all of this, on top of all this,

0:16:510:16:53

he told me one thing this evening - that man told me

0:16:530:16:57

one thing that he'd never, ever told me before.

0:16:570:16:59

And I would like to share that with you, ladies and gentlemen.

0:16:590:17:02

Just before we came to this room to make this show tonight,

0:17:020:17:05

he told me his name.

0:17:050:17:08

I can now reveal that it is Gilson Lavis on the drums!

0:17:080:17:12

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:17:120:17:15

Thank you.

0:17:150:17:16

So now I think we move ahead.

0:17:160:17:19

We're delighted to have in this room, from Baltimore,

0:17:190:17:21

the sensational Future Islands!

0:17:210:17:24

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:17:240:17:26

# Home isn't open

0:17:410:17:43

# It's locked when you get here

0:17:440:17:47

# The tracks by the creek bed

0:17:480:17:52

# That minnows the body

0:17:520:17:55

# Crawdads with their heads down low-ow-ow

0:17:560:18:00

# Back in the tall grass

0:18:000:18:03

# Stinging my cattails, whoa-oh-oh-oh

0:18:040:18:08

# Looking for brother

0:18:080:18:10

# And it feels like winter

0:18:120:18:14

# But it's the heart of the summer

0:18:150:18:18

# And we can go swimming

0:18:200:18:22

# As long as we slumber

0:18:240:18:26

# Cos we're a long way from home

0:18:260:18:29

# A long way from home

0:18:310:18:33

# A long way from home

0:18:340:18:37

# And how did we get here?

0:18:370:18:40

# One step takes me home

0:21:220:21:24

Well, as the show goes on, it's getting towards the last, you know,

0:21:240:21:28

we are in the last hour, I suppose, of this year now, getting ready for

0:21:280:21:31

the next. There's been good things and sad things. One sad thing was

0:21:310:21:35

that we lost - who's been in every Hootenanny -

0:21:350:21:37

our very own Rico Rodriguez, ladies and gentlemen.

0:21:370:21:41

-APPLAUSE

-But all is not lost

0:21:410:21:43

because the music that he was one of the people who helped invent -

0:21:430:21:45

he invented a lot of this music - is still with us.

0:21:450:21:48

Could you give us a little bit of a vibration, please?

0:21:480:21:50

Oh, yes!

0:21:530:21:55

Are you feeling good now?

Train To Skaville. Rico Rodriguez.

0:25:580:26:00

Let's see who we've got over in the corner.

0:26:000:26:03

It is a rule, of course, New Year's Eve,

0:26:030:26:05

packed with legends and amazingly talented people,

0:26:050:26:07

and I'm delighted that Sir Tom Jones is with us.

0:26:070:26:10

It's great to have you here.

0:26:100:26:12

-And...

-Are we going to share the mic?

-I think we might.

-OK.

0:26:120:26:15

-It's like a duet.

-Why not?

-Exactly. Lovely.

0:26:150:26:17

What's your favourite thing that you like to do

0:26:170:26:20

best of all on New Year's Eve?

0:26:200:26:22

-Get drunk!

-Great.

0:26:220:26:24

-No, I like to sing first.

-Yes, exactly.

0:26:240:26:26

-Of course. Like we are tonight.

-Anybody in here you'd like to -

0:26:260:26:29

you've sung with lots of people - anybody in here you'd like to

0:26:290:26:32

be working with, to give a song with tonight, maybe?

0:26:320:26:34

-Tonight?

-Yeah.

-Yes. Rhiannon. I'm going to do a song with Rhiannon.

0:26:340:26:39

-Paul Weller.

-And Paul Weller, of course.

0:26:390:26:41

-So you've got Rhiannon and Paul, so lots to look forward to.

-Yes.

0:26:410:26:44

Great, very good. I tell you what, in your book

0:26:440:26:47

-there's some interesting New Year's Eves.

-Yes.

0:26:470:26:49

I'm surprised they were allowed in there.

0:26:490:26:51

I didn't think they'd keep all the swear words in, but they did.

0:26:510:26:55

-Yeah. It sounds just like you talking.

-Well, yes.

0:26:550:26:57

-When you used to tell me bedtime stories.

-Exactly.

0:26:570:27:00

It's lovely to have the wonderful Sir Tom Jones here!

0:27:000:27:03

We'll be talking to him again a bit later.

0:27:030:27:05

And as he said, he's very much hoping...

0:27:050:27:09

He's going to do a duet with a couple of people in here

0:27:090:27:11

and one of the people is Rhiannon Giddens,

0:27:110:27:14

and not only does she have a load of fantastic things on at the moment

0:27:140:27:18

but she also is the recipient of various great awards,

0:27:180:27:22

including a Folk Grammy, but here she now is.

0:27:220:27:25

From North Carolina we welcome Rhiannon Giddens!

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:30:470:30:50

The incredible Rhiannon Giddens with Waterboy!

0:30:570:31:02

We will be hearing more from her as the evening goes on.

0:31:020:31:05

There's been a lot of great songs this year and the next artist

0:31:050:31:08

has been certainly the creator of one of the great songs of the year

0:31:080:31:12

that has become famous all over the world.

0:31:120:31:14

We're delighted to have him, his wonderful voice,

0:31:140:31:16

and one of his wonderful songs here. It is Hozier!

0:31:160:31:20

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:31:200:31:23

# My lover's got humour

0:31:290:31:32

# She's the giggle at a funeral

0:31:320:31:35

# Knows everybody's disapproval

0:31:350:31:38

# I should've worshipped her sooner

0:31:380:31:41

# If the heavens ever did speak

0:31:410:31:44

# She's the last true mouthpiece

0:31:440:31:47

# Every Sunday's getting more bleak

0:31:470:31:49

# A fresh poison each week

0:31:490:31:52

# We were born sick

0:31:520:31:54

# You heard them say it

0:31:540:31:56

# My church offers no absolutes

0:31:560:31:59

# She tells me worship in the bedroom

0:31:590:32:02

# The only heaven I'll be sent to

0:32:020:32:05

# Is when I'm alone with you

0:32:050:32:08

# I was born sick

0:32:080:32:10

# But I love it

# I'll tell you my sins and you can sharpen your knife

0:32:330:32:37

# Offer me that deathless death

0:32:370:32:39

# And good God let me give you my life

0:32:390:32:43

# Take me to church

0:32:540:32:57

# I'm a pagan of the good times

0:32:580:33:02

# My lover's the sunlight

0:33:020:33:04

0:33:140:33:17

# That's a fine-looking high horse

0:33:170:33:19

# What you got in the stable?

0:33:190:33:22

# We've a lot of starving faithful

0:33:220:33:25

# That looks tasty

0:33:250:33:27

# That looks plenty

0:33:270:33:29

# This is hungry work

0:33:290:33:31

# Take me to church

0:33:310:33:33

# I'll worship like a dog at the shrine of your lies

0:33:330:33:36

# I'll tell you my sins and you can sharpen your knife

0:33:360:33:40

0:33:480:33:51

# I'll tell you my sins and you can sharpen your knife

0:33:510:33:55

# Offer me that deathless death

0:33:550:33:57

# And good God let me give you my life

0:33:570:34:00

# No masters or kings

0:34:020:34:05

# When the ritual begins

0:34:050:34:08

# There is no sweeter innocence

0:34:080:34:12

# Than our gentle sin

0:34:120:34:15

# In the madness and soil

0:34:160:34:20

# Of that sad Earthly scene

0:34:200:34:23

# Only then I am human

0:34:230:34:27

# Only then I am clean

0:34:270:34:30

# Ooh oh

0:34:360:34:38

# A-a-men

0:34:380:34:41

# Ame-e-en

0:34:410:34:44

# Amen

0:34:440:34:48

# Take me to church

0:35:260:35:29

And later on, as a special treat, as it's New Year's Eve,

0:35:310:35:34

he'll be doing an incredible cover of a wonderful Van Morrison song.

0:35:340:35:37

# Clear the decks It's Saturn's peak

0:38:180:38:21

# Get up in a mind to get up

0:38:210:38:23

# Make it right The world's obscene

0:38:230:38:26

# Get up in a mind to get up

0:38:260:38:29

# Cut it right The planet's old

0:38:290:38:32

# Get up in a mind to get up

0:38:320:38:34

# Get it right The pattern's good. #

0:38:340:38:37

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:38:370:38:41

The wonderful Paul Weller with Saturn's Pattern.

0:38:430:38:47

It's so wonderful to see him here on the Hootenanny.

0:38:480:38:51

AUDIENCE: Hootenanny!

0:38:510:38:53

All right. I think it's time for a very old song.

0:38:530:38:55

I saw Eliza Carthy the other day, an incredible folk musician.

0:38:550:38:58

This next song... We say we get together on New Year's Eve and do some of the old songs.

0:38:580:39:02

This one literally dates back to the 18th century St James's in London

0:39:020:39:07

and moved itself across

0:39:070:39:08

and ended up in New Orleans in the late 19th century.

0:39:080:39:11

I don't want to tire you with all that

0:39:110:39:13

but there's an interesting bit of information.

0:39:130:39:15

Who better, then, to sing this incredible, wonderful old song

0:39:150:39:18

than Rhiannon Giddens and Sir Tom Jones!

0:39:180:39:22

APPLAUSE

0:39:220:39:25

# I went down to St James Infirmary

0:40:040:40:07

# To see my baby there

0:40:090:40:11

# She was lyin' on a long white table

0:40:120:40:16

# So weak, so cool, so fair

0:40:160:40:19

# I went up to see the doctor

0:40:190:40:23

# "She's very low," he said

0:40:240:40:26

# I went back to see my baby

0:40:280:40:31

# Great God! She's lying there dead

0:40:320:40:36

# I went down to old Joe's bar room

0:40:360:40:40

# On the corner of the square

0:40:400:40:43

# They were serving drinks as usual

0:40:430:40:47

# And the usual crowd was there

0:40:470:40:51

# On my left stood old Joe McKennedy

0:40:520:40:56

# His eyes were bloodshot red

0:40:560:40:59

# He turned to the crowd around him

0:41:020:41:04

# And these are the words he said

0:41:040:41:08

# Let her go, let her go

0:41:090:41:13

# God bless her wherever she may be

0:41:130:41:16

# She may search the whole world over

0:41:160:41:21

# But she'll never find a man like me

0:41:210:41:24

# If I die, won't you please bury me

0:41:250:41:29

# In my high top Stetson hat

0:41:290:41:32

# Put a gold piece on my watch chain

0:41:330:41:37

# So they'll know I died standin' pat

0:41:370:41:40

# Get six gamblers to carry my coffin

0:41:410:41:45

# Six chorus girls to sing my song

0:41:450:41:49

# Put the jazz band on my tail gate

0:41:490:41:53

# So they can raise hell as we go along

0:41:530:41:57

# That's the end of my story

0:41:580:42:01

# Let's have another round of booze

0:42:020:42:06

# If anyone should ask you

0:42:060:42:10

# Tell them I've got the St James Infirmary blues. #

0:42:100:42:14

APPLAUSE

0:43:160:43:20

Sir Tom Jones, Rhiannon Giddens! Mr John Scott on the trumpet!

0:43:200:43:24

All right, who have we got over in this corner of the room here?

0:43:260:43:29

Toby Jones, John Sessions, they're all here in one room.

0:43:290:43:32

It seems impossible, but yes, it's true.

0:43:320:43:34

First of all, two Captain Mainwarings in one room,

0:43:340:43:38

it must be a portent.

0:43:380:43:39

It must mean something, mustn't it?

0:43:390:43:41

I don't know what it portends for the next year...a good thing!

0:43:410:43:44

I would have thought so. How would you feel on that, John?

0:43:440:43:48

Yes, I feel I must endorse my friend Toby.

0:43:480:43:51

Astonishing we should be two Captain Mainwarings,

0:43:510:43:54

I hear Toby's film is brilliant,

0:43:540:43:56

it's got Michael Gambon and Tom Courtenay

0:43:560:43:59

and Bill Paterson and Bill Nighy and all kinds of...and Toby of course.

0:43:590:44:02

-Yes.

-And I have seen ours and it's all right.

0:44:020:44:07

Toby, what do you say?

0:44:070:44:09

I think he'll be fantastic as Arthur Lowe as Captain Mainwaring,

0:44:090:44:13

whereas I'm just Captain Mainwaring.

0:44:130:44:15

-Slight difference.

-Well, I think it's great to have you both here.

0:44:150:44:18

Any predictions for the New Year, Toby?

0:44:180:44:20

Anything you'd like to see happening or any reflections on the last year

0:44:200:44:24

that you'd like to share with us, we've not got much of it left now.

0:44:240:44:27

Um, reflections... I've done a lot of metal detecting this year,

0:44:270:44:32

I'm hoping...hoping I'll find something next year!

0:44:320:44:35

Great. How about you, John?

0:44:350:44:37

-Haven't you got about 18 films coming out?

-Six.

0:44:370:44:40

-Only the six(!)

-Yeah.

0:44:400:44:42

One with Meryl Streep as well, which is very exciting.

0:44:420:44:45

Have you ever spent New Year's Eve with her?

0:44:450:44:48

No, but I've done two films with her,

0:44:480:44:50

she's a lovely woman, lovely to work with ,

0:44:500:44:52

she's comfortable in her skin, Jools, rather like you.

0:44:520:44:55

Thank you. That's very kind of you.

0:44:550:44:57

I'm just going to barge in, I'll be back to see you later on.

0:44:570:45:00

Have they been behaving themselves well?

0:45:000:45:02

CROWD: No!

0:45:020:45:04

Vic Reeves, one of the great... one of the great comedians

0:45:040:45:06

but also one of the great surrealist painters that I know.

0:45:060:45:10

Thank you! Do you want to sit down?

0:45:100:45:11

-No, I'd like...

-You can't sit down because there's no seat.

0:45:110:45:15

But also, I look taller. You've also colour-coordinated your stripes.

0:45:150:45:19

We've gone for stripes, yes.

0:45:190:45:21

-WOMAN:

-It's nearly midnight, we need to get on!

0:45:210:45:23

Oh, it's nearly midnight, so we've got to get on. I'll come back. I'm sorry, didn't realise that.

0:45:230:45:28

Time slipped away from me, I'm so sorry, it is nearly midnight.

0:45:280:45:32

So let's have a beautiful nearly-midnight song

0:45:320:45:35

with an incredibly brilliant singer who is in the form of KT Tunstall!

0:45:350:45:39

APPLAUSE

0:45:390:45:41

# Like the beat beat beat of the tom-tom

0:45:540:45:57

# As the jungle shadows fall

0:45:570:46:01

# Like the tick tick tock of the stately clock

0:46:010:46:05

# Up against the wall

0:46:050:46:08

# Like the drip drip drip of the raindrops

0:46:080:46:12

# When the summer shower is through

0:46:120:46:16

# A voice within me keeps repeating

0:46:160:46:21

# You, you, you

0:46:210:46:24

# Night and day, you are the one

0:46:240:46:29

# Only you beneath the moon or under the sun

0:46:320:46:37

# Whether near to me, or far

0:46:400:46:44

# No matter, darling where you are

0:46:440:46:47

# I think of you

0:46:470:46:50

# Night and day

0:46:510:46:53

# Day and night

0:46:550:46:57

# Oh, why is it so

0:46:580:47:01

# That this longing for you follows wherever I go?

0:47:030:47:08

# In the roaring traffic's boom

0:47:110:47:14

# In the silence of my lonely room

0:47:150:47:19

# I think of you

0:47:190:47:21

# Night and day

0:47:220:47:25

# Night and day

0:47:260:47:30

# Deep in the hide of me

0:47:300:47:33

# There's an oh such a hungry yearning

0:47:340:47:38

# Burning inside of me

0:47:380:47:41

# And the torment won't be through

0:47:420:47:45

# Until you let me spend my life

0:47:450:47:49

# Making love to you

0:47:490:47:51

# Day and night

0:47:510:47:53

# Night and day

0:47:530:47:56

# Night and day

0:48:270:48:31

# Deep in the hide of me

0:48:310:48:34

# There's an oh such a hungry yearning

0:48:350:48:38

# Burning inside of me

0:48:380:48:41

# And the torment won't be through

0:48:430:48:46

# Until you let me spend my life making love to you

0:48:460:48:51

# Day and night

0:48:510:48:54

# Night and day. #

0:48:540:48:58

APPLAUSE

0:49:090:49:12

The wonderful KT Tunstall!

0:49:120:49:14

Well, I can't believe time has slipped away.

0:49:140:49:17

The whole year seems to have slipped away.

0:49:170:49:19

But now it is that time, wherever you are,

0:49:190:49:22

in your homes, in your sheds, in your beds, in your car -

0:49:220:49:25

well, I hope you're not in the car -

0:49:250:49:26

in the bar, in the pub, wherever it is,

0:49:260:49:28

I hope you can now synchronise your watches with us,

0:49:280:49:31

because I believe... Are we ready, Hootenanny?

0:49:310:49:34

ALL: Hootenanny!

0:49:340:49:37

We're about to get the cue from Westminster

0:49:370:49:39

and Paul Webison has told us it's OK.

0:49:390:49:41

Here we go, then!

0:49:410:49:43

Ten!

0:49:430:49:45

ALL: Nine! Eight!

0:49:450:49:47

Seven! Six!

0:49:470:49:49

Five! Four!

0:49:490:49:51

Three! Two! One!

0:49:510:49:54

0:52:250:52:29

0:52:350:52:38

let's have a little boogie for the New Year together!

0:52:380:52:42

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:56:230:56:27

Introducing, for the first time this year on this show,

0:56:270:56:31

the incredible, the amazing Beth Hart!

0:56:310:56:34

The incredible Beth Hart,

0:56:340:56:36

accompanied by the legendary Jeff Beck!

0:56:360:56:38

Happy New Year!

0:56:380:56:40

-Happy New Year!

-Happy New Year, Jeff!

0:56:400:56:44

Oh, then now, I just can't...

0:56:470:56:49

And there's lots more people over there, we're going round that way...

0:56:490:56:52

Happy New Year to all of you there. We've got the lot in.

0:56:520:56:55

Happy New Year to the... Happy New Year.

0:56:550:56:57

Oh, we've had a lovely cuddle up.

0:56:570:56:59

I hope, wherever you are, it's going well.

0:56:590:57:01

And now it's going to go even better because I'm pleased

0:57:010:57:04

we have back, in this corner, the wonderful Mr Paul Weller.

0:57:040:57:08

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:57:080:57:10

# It's not important for you to know my name

0:57:180:57:22

# Nor I to know yours

0:57:220:57:26

# If we communicate for two minutes only

0:57:260:57:29

# It will be enough

0:57:290:57:31

# Knowing that someone in this life

0:57:350:57:37

# Feels as desperate as me

0:57:380:57:40

# And what you give is what you get

0:57:400:57:42

# Doesn't matter if we never meet again

0:57:490:57:53

# What we have said will always remain

0:57:530:57:57

# If we communicate for two minutes only

0:57:570:58:01

# It will be a start

0:58:010:58:03

# Knowing that someone in this world

0:58:060:58:10

# Loves with a passion called hate And what you give is what you get

0:58:100:58:14

# If I never ever see you

0:58:220:58:24

# Never ever see you

0:58:240:58:25

# If I never ever see you

0:58:250:58:27

# Never ever see you

0:58:270:58:29

# If I never ever see you

0:58:290:58:32

# Again

0:58:320:58:35

# If I never ever see you

0:58:480:58:50

# Never ever see you

0:58:500:58:52

# If I never ever see you

0:58:520:58:54

# Never ever see you

0:58:540:58:55

# If I never ever see you

0:58:550:58:58

# Again

0:58:580:59:01

# And what you give is what you get

0:59:070:59:10

# And what you give is what you get

0:59:150:59:17

# And what you give is what you get. #

0:59:220:59:25

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:59:290:59:32

# Tried to keep you close to me

0:59:561:00:02

# But life got in between

1:00:021:00:07

# Tried to square not being there

1:00:101:00:17

# But it's there that I I should have been

1:00:171:00:21

# Hold back the river Let me look in your eyes

Selecter!

1:16:291:16:31

The Selecter, thank you.

1:16:311:16:33

All right, I think we should go over here now.

1:16:351:16:37

I enjoyed that vibration.

1:16:371:16:39

Did you in the room enjoy that vibration a lot?

1:16:391:16:41

-CHEERING

-Hootenanny!

-Hootenanny!

1:16:411:16:44

I love you all madly. In that case, let's go.

1:16:441:16:47

And I love the vibrations here, too,

1:16:471:16:48

because it's the vibrations that are Future Islands.

1:16:481:16:52

CHEERING

1:16:521:16:54

# Seasons change

1:17:231:17:24

# And I tried hard just to soften you

1:17:261:17:29

# And seasons change

1:17:361:17:38

# But I've grown tired of trying to change for you

1:17:401:17:43

# Cos I've been waiting on you

1:17:461:17:49

# I've been waiting on you

1:17:541:17:57

# Cos I've been waiting on you

1:18:001:18:04

# Oo-hoo-hoo-hoo

1:18:061:18:07

# I've been waiting on you

1:18:071:18:11

# As it breaks

1:18:181:18:21

# The summer will wake

1:18:221:18:24

# But the winter will wash what's left of the taste

1:18:251:18:31

# As it breaks

1:18:321:18:34

# The summer will warm

1:18:361:18:37

# But the winter will crave what's gone

1:18:391:18:43

# Will crave what's all gone away

1:18:431:18:48

# People change

1:18:481:18:50

# But you know some people never do

1:18:511:18:55

# You know when people change

1:19:021:19:04

# They gain a peace but they lose one too

1:19:051:19:08

HE GROWLS

1:19:121:19:14

# Oo-hoo-hoo-hoo

1:19:171:19:19

# I've been waiting on you

1:19:191:19:22

# Cos I've been waiting on you

1:19:261:19:29

# Oo-hoo-hoo-hoo

1:19:311:19:33

# I've been hanging on you

1:19:331:19:36

# As it breaks

1:19:451:19:46

# The summer will wake

1:19:481:19:49

# But the winter will wash what's left of the taste

1:19:511:19:56

# As it breaks

1:19:581:20:00

# The summer will warm

1:20:011:20:03

# But the winter will crave what's gone

1:20:051:20:08

# Will crave what's gone

1:20:091:20:11

HE GROWLS

1:20:121:20:15

# Gone away

1:20:151:20:16

# Cos I've been waiting on you. #

1:20:281:20:32

CHEERING

1:20:321:20:35

# I don't want to discuss it

1:20:541:20:56

# I think it's time for a change

1:20:571:20:59

# You may get disgusted

1:21:011:21:03

# And even start thinking that I'm strange

1:21:031:21:06

# In that case I'll go underground

1:21:081:21:11

# I'll get some heavy rest

1:21:111:21:13

# Never have to worry, baby

1:21:151:21:17

# There's no argument at all

1:22:131:22:15

# And if you never hear from him

1:22:171:22:20

# That just means he didn't call

1:22:201:22:22

# Or vice versa

1:22:231:22:26

# That depends on wherever you're at

1:22:261:22:29

# All right

1:22:291:22:30

# And if you never hear from me

1:22:301:22:33

# That just means that I would rather not

1:22:331:22:36

# Aaah!

CHEERING

1:23:431:23:45

-The wonderful Hozier!

-CHEERING

1:23:481:23:51

With Van Morrison's Domino. Hozier!

1:23:511:23:53

What a great voice that man's got.

1:23:531:23:56

Before that, we enjoyed Future Islands.

1:23:561:23:59

A whole group of people here. Group of people here.

1:24:021:24:04

I'm just going to quickly lunge over

1:24:041:24:06

to this corner of the room for a moment. I see Vic Reeves.

1:24:061:24:09

I'd better ask him how Bob Mortimer is in a moment. I hope he's OK.

1:24:091:24:11

Get well, Bob, if you're watching.

1:24:111:24:13

But now, I see that at the table over here

1:24:131:24:16

we have Mat Riley and Tamil Ray from Bake Off,

1:24:161:24:18

Tom Kerridge and Eliza Carthy. There you all are!

1:24:181:24:21

-CHEERING

-First of all, Tom, happy New Year.

1:24:211:24:23

-Happy New Year, Jools.

-Any predictions

1:24:231:24:26

or resolutions for the New Year?

1:24:261:24:28

Predictions are possibly...

1:24:281:24:30

England winning the European Championships.

1:24:301:24:32

I don't know, England winning the European Championships,

1:24:321:24:34

that could be a good prediction!

1:24:341:24:36

And resolutions are...

1:24:361:24:39

-..smiling more!

-Smiling more.

1:24:411:24:43

-What should we be eating on New Year's Eve?

-Everything.

1:24:431:24:46

Everything that's in the fridge, eat it all. Now. Eat it all now!

1:24:461:24:49

A professional tip.

1:24:491:24:50

And marvellous, marvellous Bake Off result for you, there.

1:24:501:24:53

What do you eat on New Year's Day?

1:24:531:24:55

-Sausage rolls.

-Simple as that!

1:24:551:24:58

Eliza, so pleased you're here.

1:24:591:25:01

You... Now, you told me all about...

1:25:011:25:04

when we did St James Infirmary Blues with Tom Jones,

1:25:041:25:06

that's really old.

1:25:061:25:07

What's the oldest way we can celebrate New Year's Eve,

1:25:071:25:09

-the oldest songs?

-I don't know,

1:25:091:25:11

something possibly about wearing mud for a hat

1:25:111:25:13

or some kind of goose fat thing, I'm not sure. Setting fire to that.

1:25:131:25:16

OK, thank you for your help. I'll do my best.

1:25:161:25:18

Oh, we love you! Eliza Carthy, thank you.

1:25:181:25:20

Happy New Year to all you all!

1:25:201:25:23

Thank you, Tamil Ray, Tom Kerridge, Eliza Carthy and Mat Riley.

1:25:231:25:26

There's... Let me just... Come here just a second.

1:25:261:25:29

How is Bob, Bob Mortimer?

1:25:291:25:31

He was unwell, you couldn't do your tour. How is he?

1:25:311:25:33

-Bob's very well now.

-Very well?

-He's doing very well.

1:25:331:25:37

Good, great. So we can expect to see you on tour again?

1:25:371:25:39

Yeah, well, hopefully we might be able to do

1:25:391:25:42

-the second part of our tour...

-If we're sober?

1:25:421:25:44

-Well, look...

-I will!

1:25:441:25:47

Julian, you know as well as I that my gutter is very blocked.

1:25:471:25:53

-Well...

-And if I get that cleared,

1:25:531:25:56

I've got nothing to worry about for the rest of the year.

1:25:561:25:58

Great, I think that's cleared up everything.

1:25:581:26:01

Thank you very much, Vic Reeves.

1:26:011:26:02

We look forward to seeing them on tour.

1:26:021:26:05

Now, the man that gets my boogie muscle going in every form,

1:26:051:26:08

it is Paul Weller!

CHEERING

1:33:491:33:51

-Thank you!

-Yes, Sir Tom Jones!

1:33:591:34:02

Sex Bomb!

1:34:021:34:03

Before that, Paul Weller. And who knows, before the evening's out,

1:34:051:34:07

maybe Sir Tom and Paul will do a duet together, who knows?

1:34:071:34:10

Who have got at this table over here?

1:34:101:34:12

Well, sitting alongside Ruby, I see we...

1:34:121:34:14

Delighted to say we have MistaJam here.

1:34:141:34:16

Delighted to have you here.

1:34:161:34:18

Any highlights of the last year for music

1:34:181:34:20

and anything we're looking forward to next year?

1:34:201:34:23

As a top DJ, what you say?

1:34:231:34:24

I think in terms of music you've got your finger on the pulse.

1:34:241:34:27

You've already had Stormzy on.

1:34:271:34:28

I think next year will be the year of grime... Or should I say this year?

1:34:281:34:31

It kind of feels like where punk was 40 years ago,

1:34:311:34:34

-that's where grime is this year.

-Great.

1:34:341:34:36

And the seeds that Squeeze set,

1:34:361:34:39

the seeds that Pauline set with The Selecter or the multiculturalism,

1:34:391:34:43

that's going to come to bear fruit in 2016.

1:34:431:34:45

And what will they be wearing?

1:34:451:34:47

-Tracksuits, black tracksuits!

-Excellent.

1:34:471:34:49

-Ruby, we're going to get 'em!

-That's right!

1:34:491:34:52

Have you been having a nice time?

1:34:521:34:53

You sang at the beginning of this show

1:34:531:34:55

and got us all going there. Are you going to do another song?

1:34:551:34:58

-I think you are, aren't you?

-I think so.

1:34:581:34:59

-I'm looking forward to that.

-OK.

1:34:591:35:01

Thank you very much and Happy New Year to you all!

1:35:011:35:04

CHEERING

1:35:041:35:05

There's Ana Corbero, top Spanish artist.

1:35:051:35:07

McDonald...man of the...

1:35:071:35:10

There's all these people here!

1:35:101:35:12

There's the man that actually does the hands that works Big Ben.

1:35:121:35:15

Paul Robeson, but he's not there so I'm a bit worried.

1:35:151:35:18

Anyway, wherever you are - in your homes, wherever you are -

1:35:181:35:21

I think it's time for our next artist in the middle of the floor

1:35:211:35:24

doing a fantastic song,

1:35:241:35:25

which I think is the Sister Rosetta Tharpe song.

1:35:251:35:28

Are you feeling good, all set in?

1:35:281:35:30

Hootenanny over there?

1:35:301:35:32

Hootenanny!

1:35:321:35:34

Then let's big it up for Rhiannon Giddens.

1:39:091:39:11

# Heaven somewhere

1:39:111:39:17

# Oooooh. #

1:39:171:39:19

CHEERING

1:39:231:39:25

# Tell her you're mine

1:39:341:39:37

# You have been blind

1:39:401:39:43

# Tell her it's over

1:39:441:39:47

# And you belong to me

1:39:501:39:52

# Tell me to come

1:39:531:39:57

# And like hell I will run

1:39:591:40:02

# Back into your arms

1:40:031:40:08

# Cos you belong to me

1:40:091:40:12

# There's a river on my skin

1:40:161:40:19

# There's a dragon in the dark

1:40:201:40:23

# But nothing scares me more

1:40:241:40:29

# Than the silence of your heart

1:40:301:40:37

# If you wanna hold me

1:40:391:40:41

# If you wanna know me again

1:40:441:40:47

# If you wanna love me

1:40:491:40:52

# Then take me home

1:40:531:40:57

# I've been at the bottom

1:40:581:41:01

# The deep end of the ocean

1:41:031:41:08

# Barely surviving

1:41:081:41:11

# By the dark side of her street

1:41:111:41:15

# Tell her you belong to me

1:41:201:41:25

# She'll never win

1:41:301:41:32

# Cos I'm not giving in

1:41:351:41:37

# No matter how long

1:41:371:41:41

# I'll still be hanging on

1:41:411:41:46

# This kind of love

1:41:501:41:52

# I'm not giving up

1:41:541:41:56

# So tell her

1:41:571:41:59

# Tell her

1:41:591:42:01

# Tell her you were fooling

1:42:031:42:08

# If you want to hold me

1:42:451:42:47

# If you want to know me again

1:42:501:42:53

# If you want to love me

1:42:541:42:58

# Then take me home

1:42:581:43:02

# I've been at the bottom

1:43:041:43:06

# The deep end of the ocean

1:43:081:43:13

# Barely surviving

1:43:131:43:16

# By the dark side of her street

1:43:161:43:23

# Tell her

1:43:251:43:27

# You belong to me

1:43:271:43:31

# Tell her

1:43:341:43:37

# You belong to me

1:43:371:43:42

# You belong

1:43:431:43:47

# Belong to me

1:43:471:43:51

# To me. #

1:43:531:43:55

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

1:44:011:44:04

The amazing voice, the incredible voice of Beth Hart,

1:44:101:44:15

ladies and gentlemen.

1:44:151:44:16

Tell Her You Belong To Me,

1:44:161:44:18

featuring the legendary Mr Jeff Beck on the guitar.

1:44:181:44:21

And you can go there but we're about to come and sit in here

1:44:221:44:25

because Hozier and James Bay are about to tell me...

1:44:251:44:27

They're about to lunge in there for their New Year's Eve things.

1:44:271:44:30

First, I'll bring this photograph of me and Gilson out again and draw your attention to the fact

1:44:301:44:34

that I do bear, would you agree,

1:44:341:44:37

that I bear a resemblance to James Bay?

1:44:371:44:40

CHEERING

1:44:401:44:43

Yes, exactly. There's me with a beard. Thank you very much.

1:44:451:44:47

So first of all... Jeff, any predictions for the New Year?

1:44:471:44:51

Try not to be a nuisance, I think.

1:44:511:44:54

You've done that all your life with some genius guitar playing.

1:44:541:44:57

There was one that got me going there. Oh! Very exciting.

1:44:571:45:01

So, James, any predictions for the New Year for you?

1:45:011:45:03

Um...

1:45:031:45:05

Predictions, I'm not sure, but I'm going to do everything I can

1:45:051:45:08

to try and be at least maybe a quarter as good as this man at the guitar.

1:45:081:45:12

-I'm going to try.

-Shut it!

-I'm going to try.

1:45:121:45:14

-APPLAUSE

-I'm going to work my hardest.

1:45:141:45:16

I'm going to move over here.

1:45:161:45:18

Here, look, there's a picture of him there.

1:45:181:45:20

No, that's me actually, but there you are. I'll leave that with you.

1:45:201:45:23

Beth, how about you? That song was fantastic.

1:45:231:45:26

-The band were crying it was so great.

-They're an amazing band.

1:45:261:45:29

-I love them.

-When you're at home in America

1:45:291:45:31

what do you normally do for New Year's Eve?

1:45:311:45:34

For New Year's Eve? Try not to make my husband crazy

1:45:341:45:37

-and make him something really yummy to eat.

-What sort of thing?

1:45:371:45:40

He loves chicken and dumplings. He loves chicken fried steak.

1:45:401:45:44

All the stuff his mama cooked for him, I learned from her

1:45:441:45:46

so I can make him happy.

1:45:461:45:48

That's what boys like, what their mums made for them. Very sensible.

1:45:481:45:51

Hozier, how about you? Any predictions or resolutions?

1:45:511:45:54

Any resolutions? The last resolution I made was to not make any more.

1:45:541:45:59

-Shall we make another one now?

-No, I kept that... I kept that resolution.

1:45:591:46:03

I haven't made anything.

1:46:031:46:04

We loved it when you sang that Van song. That was beautiful.

1:46:041:46:07

Thank you very much.

1:46:071:46:09

Right, I'm pleased to have seen all of you.

1:46:091:46:11

I think it's time to go over with Ruby here. I think...

1:46:111:46:15

Let's have something that we've done here. OK. Are you feeling good?

1:46:151:46:19

-Hey! Hootenanny!

-AUDIENCE: Hootenanny!

Anything you're particularly looking forward to

1:49:231:49:25

-now we're in 2016?

-Just living life.

-I'm with you!

1:49:251:49:28

Happy New Year!

1:49:281:49:30

Hootenanny!

1:49:301:49:31

-CROWD:

-Hootenanny!

1:49:311:49:33

So let's go to this corner.

1:49:331:49:35

OK, only on New Year's Day, as a special treat on this show,

1:49:351:49:39

would you get something as special as this.

1:49:391:49:42

Two great legends of the world of popular music -

1:49:421:49:44

Paul Weller, Tom Jones joining on a Ray Charles song.

1:49:441:49:48

What could be better? Gentlemen, if you please...

1:49:481:49:51

# Let me tell you 'bout a girl I know

1:49:541:49:58

# She's my baby and I love her so

1:49:581:50:01

# Every morning when the sun comes up

1:50:011:50:04

# She brings me love in my golden cup

1:50:041:50:08

-# And I know, I know

-Yes, I know

1:50:081:50:11

-BOTH:

-# Hallelujah, I love her so

1:50:111:50:14

# When I'm in trouble and I need a little friend

1:50:161:50:19

# That woman, she sticks by me to the end

1:50:191:50:23

# Well, you ask me, how do I know?

1:50:231:50:26

# She cuddles up before me and she tells me so

1:50:261:50:29

# That's why I know Yes, I know

1:50:291:50:33

# Hallelujah, I love her so

1:50:331:50:35

# By the time I count from one to four

1:50:371:50:40

# She keeps knocking on my front door

1:50:401:50:43

# Yes, the time I count from one to four

1:50:431:50:47

# I hear her knocking on my door

1:50:471:50:51

# In the evening when the sun goes down

1:50:511:50:54

# And there ain't nobody else around

1:50:541:50:58

# She kisses me and she holds me tight

1:50:581:51:01

# She tells me Big Daddy, everything is all right

1:51:011:51:04

# That's why I know Yes, I know

1:51:041:51:08

# Hallelujah, I love her so

1:51:081:51:10

# Yeah!

1:51:101:51:11

# When I call her on the telephone

1:51:331:51:35

# Said, Baby, I'm all alone

1:51:351:51:40

# By the time I count from one to four

1:51:401:51:43

# She's knocking at my door

1:51:431:51:47

# In the evening when the sun goes down

1:51:471:51:50

# And there ain't nobody else around

1:51:501:51:54

# She kisses me and she holds me tight

1:51:541:51:57

# And tells me Baby, everything's all right

1:51:571:52:01

# That's why I know Yes, I know

1:52:011:52:04

# Hallelujah, I love her so

1:52:041:52:07

# Hallelujah, I love her so

1:52:071:52:10

# Hallelujah

1:52:111:52:14

# I love that girl so. #

1:52:141:52:19

Yes, I do.

1:52:191:52:20

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

1:52:271:52:29

# Love comes down

1:52:451:52:47

# No sleep last night

1:52:541:52:56

# Been dreaming of you

1:52:571:53:00

# Please hold me tight

1:53:021:53:04

# Cos I can't help the way that I feel

1:53:051:53:09

# No, I can't help the way that I feel

1:53:091:53:13

# Thief in the night

1:53:141:53:16

# You stole my heart

1:53:181:53:21

# Now danger's in sight

1:53:221:53:25

# And I can't help the way that I feel

1:53:261:53:30

# No, I can't help the way that I feel

1:53:301:53:33

# Do-do do do do do do do do-do dooo

1:53:341:53:41

# Baby, you make my love come down

1:53:421:53:45

# Oh, you make my love come down

1:53:461:53:51

# Make it come all the way down

1:53:511:53:54

1:54:141:54:17

# There's no way out

1:54:191:54:21

# And I can't help the way that I feel

1:54:221:54:26

# No, I can't help the way that I feel

# My love come down down down

1:55:001:55:03

# My love come down... #

1:55:031:55:05

Put your hands in the air.

1:55:051:55:07

Whoo!

1:55:071:55:09

# Baby, you make my love come down

1:55:091:55:12

# Make it come all the way down

1:55:121:55:14

-# Feels so good when

1:55:201:55:23

# See, baby, you make me Baby, you make

1:55:231:55:27

-# Baby, you make my love come down

-Come down... #

1:55:281:55:33

Whoo!

1:55:341:55:37

-# Make it go

-All the way down

1:55:371:55:40

# See, baby, you make my love come down

1:55:411:55:45

# Feels so good when you're around... #

1:55:451:55:47

Whoo!

1:55:471:55:49

1:56:031:56:10

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

1:56:121:56:14

Love Come Down.

1:56:191:56:20

Jess Glynne, Love Come Down!

1:56:201:56:22

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

1:56:221:56:24

Before that, Paul Weller and Tom Jones together...

1:56:241:56:28

for the first time ever, I think.

1:56:281:56:31

I think for the first time ever here on the 2016 new scene.

1:56:311:56:34

I hope your year is going well.

1:56:341:56:36

Let's just have a talk to the man, the guru,

1:56:361:56:38

who I follow every day before I even get out of bed.

1:56:381:56:41

I have to read what my future holds.

1:56:411:56:42

Jonathan Cainer, you're the leading astrologer in the country.

1:56:421:56:46

What predictions do you have for us now we're in this new year?

1:56:461:56:49

Jools, a lot of people are rather worried about 2016.

1:56:491:56:52

They're concerned about what it might bring to them,

1:56:521:56:55

but actually a rare event happens this year where Mercury,

1:56:551:56:59

the planet of communication, normally very difficult to see,

1:56:591:57:02

reveals itself in front of the sun.

1:57:021:57:04

It only happens about once every ten years.

1:57:041:57:07

It's happening in May, on the 9th. It's going to be fantastic.

1:57:071:57:12

-Is it an eclipse?

-It's a kind of eclipse.

1:57:121:57:14

It's a little tiny dot on the surface of the sun.

1:57:141:57:16

You can only see it if you've got eclipse glasses on,

1:57:161:57:19

but the symbolic inference is so exciting.

1:57:191:57:21

What will it mean for me?

1:57:211:57:23

It means the light of hope is going to shine into your life

1:57:231:57:26

and into all our lives.

1:57:261:57:27

Great! Fantastic news.

1:57:271:57:30

That's for all of us. Yes, they're delighted. Great.

1:57:301:57:33

Any other...? Well, that's pretty good, I think.

1:57:331:57:36

-Nothing more specific?

-That'll do, won't it?

1:57:361:57:38

Thank you, yes.

1:57:381:57:39

Cheque's on its way. Thank you so much, Jonathan Cainer.

1:57:391:57:42

I think, yes, positive light from the eclipse of the thing.

1:57:421:57:45

I'm trying to remember what he said.

1:57:451:57:47

It'll be gone and I'll be trying to make a note of it. There we go.

1:57:471:57:50

I think it's time we welcome back the man

1:57:501:57:53

that sang so beautifully earlier.

1:57:531:57:55

Let's give him a go at giving us a cover

1:57:551:57:58

that he fancies having a go at.

1:57:581:58:00

I think we'll be very pleasantly surprised. Welcome back, James Bay!

1:58:001:58:04

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

2:07:122:07:14

Happy New Year. God bless us, each and every one.

2:07:162:07:20

Joining Jools Holland and his Rhythm & Blues Orchestra to welcome in the New Year is Sir Tom Jones, performing some of his biggest hits and even the odd duet. Jess Glynne performs some of the hits from her big-selling debut album I Cry When I Laugh. Paul Weller performs songs from his acclaimed 12th solo album and a treat or two from The Jam's back catalogue. Future Islands spent long years on the road before going on to do stunning performances on the David Letterman Show and then Later..., courtesy of the captivating moves and heartbroken sincerity of frontman Samuel T Herring. Hozier sits in with the orchestra on a unique version of his multi-platinum song Take Me to Church. Rhiannon Giddens takes to the studio floor to perform songs from her debut album. James Bay drops in to perform his anthem Hold Back the River, from his big-selling debut album Chaos and the Calm. Beth Hart brings her bluesy authority to songs from her album Better Than Home, including a ballad featuring guitar legend and friend Jeff Beck, with whom she performed in front of Barack Obama in tribute to Buddy Guy.

Jools and the Orchestra are also joined by artists who have been guesting on their latest tour, including KT Tunstall, Pauline Black and Arthur 'Gaps' Hendrickson and Jools's long-serving collaborator and friend Ruby Turner.

Throw in the Pipes and Drums of the 1st Battalion Scots Guards sound-tracking the Midnight Moment and a star-studded audience from the year just passing to throw in their resolutions and predictions for 2016 and you have an ideal New Year's Eve that invites you to party on your sofa.

This is the 23rd Hootenanny on BBC2, the first show launching at Television Centre in 1993 with a cast that included Sting, Paul Young and Chaka Demus & Pliers.
