Welcome to this very special Later With Jools Holland Presents Mark Knopfler.

I first saw Mr Knopfler in about 1977

when Squeeze played in a park in London's fashionable Deptford

with Dire Straits. I took the opportunity

to report him to the authorities for being so talented.

This enormous talent has allowed him to lead Dire Straits,

collaborate with some of the greatest musicians in the world,

write film music, and now he's had his own solo album out, Golden Heart.

He's going to be doing all of these things tonight

with some of the most fantastic musicians from all over the world.

I actually wrote the words to this tune about 15 years ago,

about the time John Lennon was murdered.

And it's really about the sort of fan that just...

It's not like a music fan. I love the music fans. Fantastic.

This is the sort of guy, the autograph guy,

who just wants Saddam Hussein's autograph with everybody else's.

It doesn't really make any difference to him as long as you're well known.

Anyway, so... And I just wrote it at the time, about 15 years ago.

I was so happy playing with these guys and the music arrived so I put the words and music together.

I wrote this song Rudiger, and that's his name - Rudiger.
