with that marvellous band. We welcome Sting! Marvellous to have

you here. Thrill Andrew honour. Now, it's

quite a while since your last record. This one is sensational. You

have a lot of great people. We'll talk about them in a moment. I

think, would I be right in saying this record is inspired by your

childhood home in the north-east? I come from Tyneside. We built the

biggest ships ever built, ever constructed in the world, in the

history of the world in our town. I've written a series of songs about

my town and the ship building industry. Is that actually your

street? That was. Is it there, the crane? No, it's been levelled, not

because of me. Your earliest memory of this area? This is my earliest

memory, a ship being launched, the blood out of the sky. They were huge

these things, five times higher than the house. Did your family work with

them? My dad was an engineer. Did you ever try working with ships?

No, picked up a guitar and I wanted to be a rock star. Much better idea.

The The Last Ship is going to be a musical, like a Broadway musical.

I'd rather call it a play with songs. I don't like the term

musical. Who will some of the people be played by? Well my star is Jimmy

Nail. I saw him there! He is there. APPLAUSE

Very modest live in the background. Gym a's a wonderful actor and

fantastic singer. Perfect for the role. My only worry might be if it's

on Broadway in America, I mean, don't get me wrong, American actors

are fantastic, but sometimes they are challenged by some of the

British voices. Jimmy, what do you think? No comment. Jimmy won't be.

Crystal clear wherever he speaks. Tell us about some of the other

people you've got. On the record you have also gathered, it is proper

north-eastern music because you've gathered the great people. We have

north-eastern music because you've Peter Tokel on the fiddle there.

Then Julianson Sutton on the squeeze box there -- Julian. That looks like

a rugby team in the back. They're box there -- Julian. That looks like

from tealside. They're the Wilson family. These are some of the

greatest names in north-eastern music. The three there from the

North East of America. Blending in weather well. Token Geordies.

Wi-eye. That's a terrible accent. It's not bad! I spent a long time up

there. I love this music. You should have a better accent then. And the

unthank sisters are there. They're on the record and Brian Johnson from

ACDC. My only question is, why so long? It's such a long time since

your last record. When you have nothing to say, you should say

nothing. For ten years I had nothing to say. Very wise. That's probably

the wisest thing, it's our 300th show and we've had wisdom and lovely

I tell you what, everybody in the room has a different special memory

of each of those different songs. The Righteous Brothers, Los

Cristianos, that has been played -- you lost that loving feeling, it's

been played more than any other song on radio. Yeah, it's the most played

record on radio in America. Quite a baying chee. . -- quite a big

achievement. When did you first hear that song? The writers, great

writers, Phil Spectrum was going to produce us. He asked them to write a

song for us. Writing this song was very odd. We had been doing rhythm

and blues. So Phil Spectre and Barry Man sang the song to us. They sang

real high. They played it? Yeah real high, about a fifth up. They got

done and I said what a great song for the Everley Brothers. It was a

beautiful song. They lowered it and lowered it and lowered it. Then that

became that record. Was Phil like to work with? What's the next question.

Yeah. No, no. You know what, he was great. He wanted people to think

that he was very eccentric, but when we worked with him, any way, he was

great. He worked us hard. What were the artists that were inspiring to

you sing? Well, when I was 15, it was Little Richard. You know Fats

Domino. Then when I was 19, I fell in love with Ray Charles and BB

King, all the Blues guys, just all the great black artists from the

50s. You said that you'd been in a bar and you'd been working and you

heard a record on the jukebox, a B side. Yeah, Etta James, I don't know

what the A side was, it might have been At Last, but I would play that

record and it killed me. She became a good friend. She was a wonderful

lady. Would you give us a bit now. Sure.
