I'm holding this record with a perfectly good reason - | 0:19:02 | 0:19:04
the man that's made it is sitting here. | 0:19:04 | 0:19:06
It is - we welcome Martin Fry! | 0:19:06 | 0:19:08
CHEERING AND APPLAUSE | 0:19:08 | 0:19:10
-Good to see you, Martin. -Hello. -To celebrate the record coming out, | 0:19:10 | 0:19:14
-we've laid on this huge spread for you. -Fantastic. -Just tuck in. | 0:19:14 | 0:19:17
-It's a beautiful place. -Yes, it is a beautiful place. | 0:19:17 | 0:19:20
-Now, you've brought this out. -Yes. -The Lexicon Of Love II. | 0:19:20 | 0:19:23
And, um, it's a sequel to the original, in 1982. | 0:19:23 | 0:19:28
-So, there we are, 34 years later. -Very patient fans out there. -Yes. | 0:19:28 | 0:19:32
-It's taken a while. -It felt right. -What made you decide to... | 0:19:32 | 0:19:36
Yeah, yeah. The original came out in '82, way back, | 0:19:36 | 0:19:38
-with The Look of Love and Poison Arrow, and all this stuff. -Yes. | 0:19:38 | 0:19:41
Recent years, well, 30 years has rolled by, and I kind of | 0:19:41 | 0:19:44
thought I'd bring some wisdom and experience to a project. | 0:19:44 | 0:19:47
-Were you unhappy with the original? -No, it was fantastic. | 0:19:47 | 0:19:49
It was a great record, wasn't it? | 0:19:49 | 0:19:51
-It's public property, you know. -It was a huge hit. | 0:19:51 | 0:19:53
But it would be nice to go back and re-inhabit some of those songs, | 0:19:53 | 0:19:56
I thought. I was playing a show at the Albert Hall, with Anne Dudley | 0:19:56 | 0:19:58
conducting the Southbank Sinfonia. | 0:19:58 | 0:20:01
Playing a lot of shows with orchestras, so I thought I'd make... | 0:20:01 | 0:20:04
Well, calling it The Lexicon of Love II gave me the excuse to make | 0:20:04 | 0:20:07
a big, bold, orchestral, lavish record. | 0:20:07 | 0:20:10
And so what's changed, and what sort of thing has changed...? | 0:20:10 | 0:20:13
-The world's changed, hasn't it? -The world's changed? Yeah. | 0:20:13 | 0:20:16
It's a wonderful place. So, I thought I'd write | 0:20:16 | 0:20:18
some songs and see if the world was still a very romantic place. | 0:20:18 | 0:20:21
-And is it? -It is for me, yeah. Very much so. After all these years. | 0:20:21 | 0:20:25
-In the 1980s... -I think so. | 0:20:25 | 0:20:26
..presumably you would have walked into the pub, you know, | 0:20:26 | 0:20:29
the miners' strike's going on, there's people smoking and drinking, | 0:20:29 | 0:20:32
and doing all the things you can't do any more, | 0:20:32 | 0:20:35
was it romantic then, do you think, | 0:20:35 | 0:20:37
or do we look back through rose-tinted spectacles at the past? | 0:20:37 | 0:20:40
No, I think... Well, the past's gone, all we've got is the present. | 0:20:40 | 0:20:45
Today, yeah. I mean, I've been married 30 years, | 0:20:45 | 0:20:47
and I thought to myself, "That's probably one of the most significant | 0:20:47 | 0:20:50
"things that's happened to me." Yeah, I feel good about that. | 0:20:50 | 0:20:53
-That's quite a romantic idea. -My wife's here. | 0:20:53 | 0:20:55
Very nice to meet you. Hello! | 0:20:55 | 0:20:57
-Congratulations! -Thank you. | 0:20:57 | 0:20:59
I thought I'd go back and find some inspiration in some | 0:20:59 | 0:21:02
romantic songs, yeah. | 0:21:02 | 0:21:03
Well, um... | 0:21:03 | 0:21:05
what sort of things were you listening to in the 1980s? | 0:21:05 | 0:21:07
What was your... | 0:21:07 | 0:21:09
James Chance And The Contortions, do you remember those guys? | 0:21:09 | 0:21:12
-Not really. -Joy Division. | 0:21:12 | 0:21:14
-Yes, of course. Yeah, yeah. -Earth, Wind and Fire, Chic. You know, | 0:21:14 | 0:21:17
we were trying to combine both | 0:21:17 | 0:21:19
the world of disco and the world of edgy pop, I guess, back then. | 0:21:19 | 0:21:23
-Yeah. -Now, we've got some lovely footage here of... | 0:21:23 | 0:21:27
-Well, I say it's lovely... -I've got a long illustrious past. | 0:21:27 | 0:21:31
No, it is. I mean, this record | 0:21:31 | 0:21:33
was a huge and important record when this came out. | 0:21:33 | 0:21:36
-So, let's have a look at this now. This is 1982, Poison Arrow. -OK. | 0:21:36 | 0:21:40
# If I were to say to you "Can you keep a secret?" | 0:21:40 | 0:21:43
# Would you know just what to do or where to keep it? | 0:21:43 | 0:21:47
# Then I say I love you Foul the situation | 0:21:47 | 0:21:51
# Hey, girl, I thought we were the right combination | 0:21:51 | 0:21:55
# Who broke my heart? You did, you did | 0:21:55 | 0:21:58
# Bow to the target Blame Cupid, Cupid | 0:21:58 | 0:22:02
# You think you're smart Stupid, stupid | 0:22:02 | 0:22:06
# Shoot that poison arrow to my heart | 0:22:06 | 0:22:10
# Shoot that poison arrow | 0:22:10 | 0:22:11
# Shoot that poison arrow to my heart | 0:22:14 | 0:22:16
# Shoot that poison arrow...# | 0:22:17 | 0:22:19
-APPLAUSE -Thank you! | 0:22:21 | 0:22:24
You had to have a gold lame suit back then. | 0:22:25 | 0:22:27
-Have you still got that suit? -No, I do not have that suit. No, no. | 0:22:27 | 0:22:30
-What happened to it? -That suit went missing. I left it in Japan. | 0:22:30 | 0:22:33
After about six months touring, | 0:22:33 | 0:22:35
I kind of left it in the Keio Plaza Hotel. | 0:22:35 | 0:22:37
Are you saying there's a Japanese man walking around in that suit? | 0:22:37 | 0:22:40
-Possibly, yes. -Palming himself off as you, or just enjoying himself. | 0:22:40 | 0:22:44
-I think so, yeah. -Just relaxing of an evening in it. | 0:22:44 | 0:22:47
-Yeah, a gold suit. Elvis had one, didn't he? -Yeah. | 0:22:47 | 0:22:49
-Yeah, many, many have worn those suits. -You were all from Sheffield? | 0:22:49 | 0:22:52
-Yeah, originally. -Sheffield, early on, there were people like | 0:22:52 | 0:22:56
Joe Cocker, Paul Carrick, then there was Human League, all of you. | 0:22:56 | 0:22:59
Later, you've got Pulp, Richard Hall, Arctic Monkeys. | 0:22:59 | 0:23:01
it's got a big history. Why do you think that is? | 0:23:01 | 0:23:04
Sheffield in the early '80s was a great place to be Bohemian. | 0:23:04 | 0:23:07
Yeah, and have no money. It was a great place. | 0:23:07 | 0:23:10
You could go and see Cabaret Voltaire, or Def Leppard, | 0:23:10 | 0:23:12
or Pulp, Clock DVA and the Human League, yeah. | 0:23:12 | 0:23:15
It was very inspiring. | 0:23:15 | 0:23:17
But it's great, when you first start out, to have a lot of bands | 0:23:17 | 0:23:19
to compete against, isn't it? | 0:23:19 | 0:23:21
-I think that's a big part of making music. -Yeah. | 0:23:21 | 0:23:24
-Very inspiring. -Now, will you be out in touring shows? | 0:23:24 | 0:23:26
-Can we see this being performed? -Yeah. | 0:23:26 | 0:23:29
Playing festivals through summer, | 0:23:29 | 0:23:31
but in October we play with Anne Dudley conducting, | 0:23:31 | 0:23:34
South Bank Sinfonia with ABC. We start in Manchester, | 0:23:34 | 0:23:37
-sort of mid-October. -Well, the record sounds wonderful. | 0:23:37 | 0:23:41
-Great to have you. -Thank you. -Thank you for joining us, Martin Fry! | 0:23:41 | 0:23:44

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE | 0:42:19 | 0:42:22
The wonderful sound of James Blake, The Colour In Anything. | 0:42:28 | 0:42:31
Before that, we enjoyed the cave music of Moon Hooch! | 0:42:32 | 0:42:37
CHEERING AND APPLAUSE | 0:42:37 | 0:42:39
Now, of Legends' Corner, | 0:42:39 | 0:42:42
we welcome Wilko Johnson! | 0:42:42 | 0:42:44
CHEERING | 0:42:44 | 0:42:46
Lovely to see you. | 0:42:46 | 0:42:47
It's great that you've come here on the show. | 0:42:50 | 0:42:53
You've got this great book out, Don't You Leave Me Here. | 0:42:53 | 0:42:57
Very good title. | 0:42:57 | 0:42:59
What made you decide to write this book now? | 0:42:59 | 0:43:01
You know, was it you wanted to look back, | 0:43:01 | 0:43:03
wanted to build a new conservatory, get some money? | 0:43:03 | 0:43:05
Well, actually, the publishers - Little, Brown - | 0:43:05 | 0:43:09
approached me to do a book. | 0:43:09 | 0:43:12
I'd never written a book before. | 0:43:12 | 0:43:15
I assumed that they wanted some kind of account | 0:43:15 | 0:43:19
of my encounter with terminal cancer. | 0:43:19 | 0:43:23
And I thought, well, OK... | 0:43:23 | 0:43:25
and I'll perhaps put in a bit of background to explain who I am. | 0:43:25 | 0:43:31
Your life story - sort of sandwich it in there! | 0:43:31 | 0:43:35
And it ended up turning into my story | 0:43:35 | 0:43:37
from my origins in the Thames Estuary | 0:43:37 | 0:43:40
up to sitting here with you, more or less. | 0:43:40 | 0:43:43
Famously, you were given ten months to live a couple of years ago. | 0:43:43 | 0:43:47
-Yeah. -But you were saved from certain death. -I was indeed. Yes. | 0:43:47 | 0:43:50
Did that make you focus on trying to record your life? | 0:43:50 | 0:43:55
Well, for one thing... | 0:43:55 | 0:43:56
I mean, I had that year, or slightly more than a year, | 0:43:56 | 0:43:59
thinking I was going to die. | 0:43:59 | 0:44:02
And it's a strange kind of way, | 0:44:02 | 0:44:06
it gives you a different way of looking at things, | 0:44:06 | 0:44:08
when you think the future is a universal blank. | 0:44:08 | 0:44:12
And now it's fading from me like a dream, you know. | 0:44:12 | 0:44:17
I'm back in the world. | 0:44:17 | 0:44:19
I was maybe trying to capture it. | 0:44:19 | 0:44:22
Did you enjoy writing the book? Looking back over everything? | 0:44:22 | 0:44:25
Yes, I started doing it, I got into it, | 0:44:25 | 0:44:28
I thought, this is really good, I'm a writer! | 0:44:28 | 0:44:31
And then I started getting up to the sad bit, | 0:44:31 | 0:44:35
where my wife died, | 0:44:35 | 0:44:38
12 years ago now... | 0:44:38 | 0:44:40
In fact, it's her birthday today. | 0:44:40 | 0:44:42
Aw! But we were together for 40 years, | 0:44:42 | 0:44:46
since we were teenagers. | 0:44:46 | 0:44:48
She died of cancer in 2004. | 0:44:48 | 0:44:51
And I got up to that point, | 0:44:51 | 0:44:53
and I didn't feel so good writing away any more. | 0:44:53 | 0:44:57
I'd open up the laptop and burst into tears. | 0:44:57 | 0:45:00
Anyway, I thought, "Pull myself together and carry on through it." | 0:45:00 | 0:45:05
The other thing, of course, | 0:45:05 | 0:45:07
is that you talk about Dr Feelgood. | 0:45:07 | 0:45:09
They were a very important band, I think, you know, | 0:45:09 | 0:45:11
now, historically, you look back... | 0:45:11 | 0:45:13
Some people say they were the first British blues band, | 0:45:13 | 0:45:16
but they were also one of the first punk bands before there was punk, | 0:45:16 | 0:45:19
you know, a band that couldn't care less. | 0:45:19 | 0:45:21
We hadn't had one of those for a long time, you know. | 0:45:21 | 0:45:24
When you look back, | 0:45:24 | 0:45:25
is it with fondness that you look back at Dr Feelgood? | 0:45:25 | 0:45:27
Well, I do. I always have done. | 0:45:27 | 0:45:31
You know, the band ended very acrimoniously and we split up, | 0:45:31 | 0:45:36
and I didn't want to dwell on that, | 0:45:36 | 0:45:41
I just walked away and I thought, | 0:45:41 | 0:45:43
I just want to remember the good times. | 0:45:43 | 0:45:45
And, in fact, after this argument in the newspapers, | 0:45:45 | 0:45:48
they were blaming me and saying it was all my fault and everything. | 0:45:48 | 0:45:53
And now, in this book, for the first time, | 0:45:53 | 0:45:55
I've written out a proper account of how we bust up | 0:45:55 | 0:45:58
and, believe me, they done me wrong! | 0:45:58 | 0:46:00
Never! Don't hold a grudge, nurture it! | 0:46:02 | 0:46:05
LAUGHTER | 0:46:05 | 0:46:07
We've got a bit of film footage. | 0:46:07 | 0:46:08
And, of course, you then formed the Solid Senders, | 0:46:08 | 0:46:11
-which I nearly joined! -You did, didn't you? | 0:46:11 | 0:46:12
Well, I auditioned, but then I never heard anything again! | 0:46:12 | 0:46:15
You came along on a motorbike! | 0:46:15 | 0:46:16
I did. That's right. And then people had just started gobbing - | 0:46:16 | 0:46:19
it was those magical days! | 0:46:19 | 0:46:21
Let's have a look. | 0:46:21 | 0:46:22
# Jet plane heading for the runway Swimming like a fish | 0:46:27 | 0:46:29
# Through the heat haze | 0:46:29 | 0:46:31
# It's really getting strange | 0:46:31 | 0:46:33
# The way the weather change | 0:46:33 | 0:46:35
# Caterpillar tractor is crawling up the snow | 0:46:35 | 0:46:37
# I wanna bottle up and go | 0:46:37 | 0:46:39
# Don't want to go out and get made | 0:46:39 | 0:46:42
# Talk to the squares from the jet set | 0:46:42 | 0:46:44
# They're try to learn their line | 0:46:44 | 0:46:46
# Two weeks behind the time | 0:46:46 | 0:46:48
# Standing round lookin' like I'm really in the know | 0:46:48 | 0:46:51
# I wanna bottle and go Ah! | 0:46:51 | 0:46:53
CHEERING | 0:47:07 | 0:47:10
That is great. | 0:47:12 | 0:47:13
Was it nice being a front man after all that time? | 0:47:13 | 0:47:16
Erm... | 0:47:16 | 0:47:18
I don't know. I liked both ways. | 0:47:18 | 0:47:20
When I worked with Ian Dury and the Blockheads, | 0:47:20 | 0:47:23
it was kind of fabulous being a sideman, | 0:47:23 | 0:47:25
particularly with that great rhythm section. | 0:47:25 | 0:47:29
Letting Ian stand at the front | 0:47:29 | 0:47:30
and get all nervous and all that, you know... | 0:47:30 | 0:47:33
-I like it both ways. -Yeah. | 0:47:33 | 0:47:35
And you've also recently - or relatively recently - | 0:47:35 | 0:47:37
-you were in the Game Of Thrones. -Yes, I was. | 0:47:37 | 0:47:40
And were playing this sort of tongueless violent mute psychopath. | 0:47:40 | 0:47:44
Did that open up a desire to take on more acting? | 0:47:44 | 0:47:48
It was the first time I've ever done any acting. | 0:47:48 | 0:47:51
They... I got this call to go - would I go and audition? | 0:47:51 | 0:47:55
They told me it was for an American television series. | 0:47:55 | 0:47:57
I thought it was going to be | 0:47:57 | 0:47:59
something like Xena the Warrior Princess. | 0:47:59 | 0:48:01
I thought, yeah, I'd like to do that, | 0:48:01 | 0:48:03
maybe I'll get a leather jacket out of it or something. | 0:48:03 | 0:48:06
I got there and realised, no, this is much bigger! | 0:48:06 | 0:48:09
It was absolutely great, | 0:48:09 | 0:48:11
because my character's tongue was cut out | 0:48:11 | 0:48:13
and I didn't have to learn any lines! | 0:48:13 | 0:48:15
LAUGHTER | 0:48:15 | 0:48:16
I just had to stand round giving people dirty looks. | 0:48:16 | 0:48:19
I mean, I can do that! | 0:48:19 | 0:48:20
Do you fancy any more acting? | 0:48:22 | 0:48:23
If they can find some more tongueless parts for me, yeah! | 0:48:23 | 0:48:27
It's always good to specialise, I think. | 0:48:27 | 0:48:29
It's been great having you. | 0:48:29 | 0:48:31
You nearly died, I'm so pleased you've come back. | 0:48:31 | 0:48:34
LAUGHTER What's your... | 0:48:34 | 0:48:37
outlook for the future now? | 0:48:37 | 0:48:39
Well, I suppose I'm just glad to be... | 0:48:39 | 0:48:43
I mean, I can't take it in. You know, I'm here, | 0:48:43 | 0:48:46
I'm looking around, I'm conscious, I'm not... | 0:48:46 | 0:48:48
I should have been two years in my grave. | 0:48:48 | 0:48:50
So, pretty much everything is all right, isn't it? | 0:48:50 | 0:48:53
It's great. Exactly. I couldn't agree more! | 0:48:53 | 0:48:55
You're pleased to be here, we're pleased you're here, | 0:48:55 | 0:48:57
everything's worked out all right! | 0:48:57 | 0:48:59
Thank you for joining us. Wilko Johnson! | 0:48:59 | 0:49:01
The marvellous Wilko Johnson. And while we're on it - | 0:49:03 | 0:49:05
earlier on I was just saying goodbye to Martin | 0:49:05 | 0:49:07
and I didn't notice he was trying to take my hand | 0:49:07 | 0:49:09
and I walked off, and that just isn't on. | 0:49:09 | 0:49:12
Great to have you here. Thank you, sir. Martin Fry. | 0:49:12 | 0:49:15

Thank you very much, Biffy Clyro! | 1:02:49 | 1:02:51
CHEERING Stop right there a moment. | 1:02:51 | 1:02:54
So, we'll be back next week with a nudist party and folk dancing. | 1:02:54 | 1:02:58
But you won't be able to see that, | 1:02:58 | 1:03:00
because the series finishes until the autumn, | 1:03:00 | 1:03:03
so it's just going to be myself and the crew and a private affair. | 1:03:03 | 1:03:05
But know that we'll be in the studio anyway, thinking of you. | 1:03:05 | 1:03:09
But that's the end this week. | 1:03:09 | 1:03:10
