-So, there we are, 34 years later.

-Very patient fans out there.

-It's taken a while.

-What made you decide to...

Yeah, yeah. The original came out in '82, way back,

-with The Look of Love and Poison Arrow, and all this stuff.

-Yes.

Recent years, well, 30 years has rolled by, and I kind of

thought I'd bring some wisdom and experience to a project.

-Were you unhappy with the original?

-No, it was fantastic.

It was a great record, wasn't it?

-It's public property, you know.

-It was a huge hit.

But it would be nice to go back and re-inhabit some of those songs,

I thought. I was playing a show at the Albert Hall, with Anne Dudley

conducting the Southbank Sinfonia.

Playing a lot of shows with orchestras, so I thought I'd make...

Well, calling it The Lexicon of Love II gave me the excuse to make

a big, bold, orchestral, lavish record.

And so what's changed, and what sort of thing has changed...?

-The world's changed, hasn't it?

-The world's changed? Yeah.

It's a wonderful place. So, I thought I'd write

some songs and see if the world was still a very romantic place.

-And is it?

-It is for me, yeah. Very much so. After all these years.

-In the 1980s...

-I think so.

..presumably you would have walked into the pub, you know,

the miners' strike's going on, there's people smoking and drinking,

and doing all the things you can't do any more,

was it romantic then, do you think,

or do we look back through rose-tinted spectacles at the past?

No, I think... Well, the past's gone, all we've got is the present.

Today, yeah. I mean, I've been married 30 years,

and I thought to myself, "That's probably one of the most significant

"things that's happened to me." Yeah, I feel good about that.

-That's quite a romantic idea.

-My wife's here.

I thought I'd go back and find some inspiration in some

romantic songs, yeah.

what sort of things were you listening to in the 1980s?

James Chance And The Contortions, do you remember those guys?

-Not really.

-Joy Division.

-Yes, of course. Yeah, yeah.

-Earth, Wind and Fire, Chic. You know,

we were trying to combine both

the world of disco and the world of edgy pop, I guess, back then.

-Yeah.

-Now, we've got some lovely footage here of...

-Well, I say it's lovely...

-I've got a long illustrious past.

No, it is. I mean, this record

was a huge and important record when this came out.

-So, let's have a look at this now. This is 1982, Poison Arrow.

You had to have a gold lame suit back then.

-Have you still got that suit?

-No, I do not have that suit. No, no.

-What happened to it?

-That suit went missing. I left it in Japan.

After about six months touring,

I kind of left it in the Keio Plaza Hotel.

Are you saying there's a Japanese man walking around in that suit?

-Possibly, yes.

-Palming himself off as you, or just enjoying himself.

-I think so, yeah.

-Just relaxing of an evening in it.

-Yeah, a gold suit. Elvis had one, didn't he?

-Yeah.

-Yeah, many, many have worn those suits.

-You were all from Sheffield?

-Yeah, originally.

-Sheffield, early on, there were people like

Joe Cocker, Paul Carrick, then there was Human League, all of you.

Later, you've got Pulp, Richard Hall, Arctic Monkeys.

it's got a big history. Why do you think that is?

Sheffield in the early '80s was a great place to be Bohemian.

Yeah, and have no money. It was a great place.

You could go and see Cabaret Voltaire, or Def Leppard,

or Pulp, Clock DVA and the Human League, yeah.

It was very inspiring.

But it's great, when you first start out, to have a lot of bands

to compete against, isn't it?

-I think that's a big part of making music.

-Yeah.

-Very inspiring.

-Now, will you be out in touring shows?

-Can we see this being performed?

-Yeah.

Playing festivals through summer,

but in October we play with Anne Dudley conducting,

South Bank Sinfonia with ABC. We start in Manchester,

-sort of mid-October.

we welcome Wilko Johnson!

Lovely to see you.

It's great that you've come here on the show.

You've got this great book out, Don't You Leave Me Here.

Very good title.

What made you decide to write this book now?

You know, was it you wanted to look back,

wanted to build a new conservatory, get some money?

Well, actually, the publishers - Little, Brown -

approached me to do a book.

I'd never written a book before.

I assumed that they wanted some kind of account

of my encounter with terminal cancer.

And I thought, well, OK...

and I'll perhaps put in a bit of background to explain who I am.

Your life story - sort of sandwich it in there!

And it ended up turning into my story

from my origins in the Thames Estuary

up to sitting here with you, more or less.

Famously, you were given ten months to live a couple of years ago.

-Yeah.

-But you were saved from certain death.

-I was indeed. Yes.

Did that make you focus on trying to record your life?

Well, for one thing...

I mean, I had that year, or slightly more than a year,

thinking I was going to die.

And it's a strange kind of way,

it gives you a different way of looking at things,

when you think the future is a universal blank.

And now it's fading from me like a dream, you know.

I'm back in the world.

I was maybe trying to capture it.

Did you enjoy writing the book? Looking back over everything?

Yes, I started doing it, I got into it,

I thought, this is really good, I'm a writer!

And then I started getting up to the sad bit,

where my wife died,

12 years ago now...

In fact, it's her birthday today.

Aw! But we were together for 40 years,

since we were teenagers.

She died of cancer in 2004.

And I got up to that point,

and I didn't feel so good writing away any more.

I'd open up the laptop and burst into tears.

Anyway, I thought, "Pull myself together and carry on through it."

The other thing, of course,

is that you talk about Dr Feelgood.

They were a very important band, I think, you know,

now, historically, you look back...

Some people say they were the first British blues band,

but they were also one of the first punk bands before there was punk,

you know, a band that couldn't care less.

We hadn't had one of those for a long time, you know.

When you look back,

is it with fondness that you look back at Dr Feelgood?

Well, I do. I always have done.

You know, the band ended very acrimoniously and we split up,

and I didn't want to dwell on that,

I just walked away and I thought,

I just want to remember the good times.

And, in fact, after this argument in the newspapers,

they were blaming me and saying it was all my fault and everything.

And now, in this book, for the first time,

I've written out a proper account of how we bust up

and, believe me, they done me wrong!

Never! Don't hold a grudge, nurture it!

We've got a bit of film footage.

And, of course, you then formed the Solid Senders,

-which I nearly joined!

-You did, didn't you?

Well, I auditioned, but then I never heard anything again!

You came along on a motorbike!

I did. That's right. And then people had just started gobbing -

it was those magical days!

That is great.

Was it nice being a front man after all that time?

Erm...

I don't know. I liked both ways.

When I worked with Ian Dury and the Blockheads,

it was kind of fabulous being a sideman,

particularly with that great rhythm section.

Letting Ian stand at the front

and get all nervous and all that, you know...

-I like it both ways.

-Yeah.

And you've also recently - or relatively recently -

-you were in the Game Of Thrones.

-Yes, I was.

And were playing this sort of tongueless violent mute psychopath.

Did that open up a desire to take on more acting?

It was the first time I've ever done any acting.

They... I got this call to go - would I go and audition?

They told me it was for an American television series.

I thought it was going to be

something like Xena the Warrior Princess.

I thought, yeah, I'd like to do that,

maybe I'll get a leather jacket out of it or something.

I got there and realised, no, this is much bigger!

It was absolutely great,

because my character's tongue was cut out

and I didn't have to learn any lines!

I just had to stand round giving people dirty looks.

I mean, I can do that!

Do you fancy any more acting?

If they can find some more tongueless parts for me, yeah!

It's always good to specialise, I think.

It's been great having you.

You nearly died, I'm so pleased you've come back.

outlook for the future now?

Well, I suppose I'm just glad to be...

I mean, I can't take it in. You know, I'm here,

I'm looking around, I'm conscious, I'm not...

I should have been two years in my grave.

So, pretty much everything is all right, isn't it?
