0:05:410:05:43

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:05:430:05:45

# It's always around me all this noise, but

0:06:010:06:06

# Not really as loud as the voice saying

0:06:060:06:12

# Let it happen, let it happen

0:06:120:06:16

# It's gonna feel so good

0:06:160:06:18

# Just let it happen, let it happen

0:06:180:06:25

# All this running around

0:06:290:06:33

# Trying to cover my shadow

0:06:340:06:37

# An ocean growing inside

0:06:370:06:41

# All the others seem shallow

0:06:410:06:45

# All this running around

0:06:450:06:49

# Bearing down on my shoulders

0:06:490:06:53

# I can hear an alarm

0:06:530:06:57

# Must be morning

0:06:570:07:00

# I heard about a whirlwind that's coming round

0:07:110:07:17

# It's gonna carry off all that isn't bound, and

0:07:170:07:23

# When it happens, when it happens

0:07:230:07:27

# I'm gonna be holding on

0:07:270:07:29

# So let it happen, let it happen

0:07:290:07:37

# All this running around

0:07:370:07:41

# I can't fight it much longer

0:07:410:07:45

# Something's trying to get out

0:07:450:07:49

# And it's never been closer

0:07:490:07:52

# So if my ticker should fail

0:07:520:07:56

# Just make up some other story

0:07:560:08:00

# But if I never come back

0:08:000:08:04

# Tell my lover I'm sorry

0:08:040:08:06

# I will not vanish and you will not scare me

0:08:300:08:34

# Try to get through it Try to bounce to it

0:08:340:08:37

# All the while thinking I might as well do it

0:08:370:08:41

# They be lovin' someone and they didn't know it

0:08:410:08:45

# Take the next ticket to take the next train

0:08:450:08:49

# Why would I do it?

0:08:490:08:51

# And you wanna think that

0:08:510:08:53

# Try to get through it Try to bounce to it

0:09:050:09:08

# All the while thinking I might as well do it

0:09:080:09:12

# Try to get through it

0:09:120:09:14

# All the while thinking I might as well do it

0:09:140:09:16

# They be lovin' someone and they don't know it

0:09:160:09:18

# Maybe I was ready all along

0:09:180:09:22

# Oh, maybe...

0:09:220:09:24

# Try to get through it

0:09:240:09:26

# ..I was ready all along

0:09:260:09:27

-# Oh, maybe...

-# Try to get through it

0:09:270:09:31

# All the while thinking I might as well do it

0:09:310:09:33

# Oh, maybe I was ready all along

0:09:330:09:41

# I was ready all along

0:09:410:09:43

# Try to get through it Try to bounce to it

0:09:430:09:45

# Oh, maybe

0:09:450:09:47

APPLAUSE AND CHEERING

0:18:490:18:52

The delicious voice, the melodies, James Blake.

0:18:560:18:59

Radio Silence.

0:18:590:19:00

I'm holding this record with a perfectly good reason -

0:19:020:19:04

the man that's made it is sitting here.

0:19:040:19:06

It is - we welcome Martin Fry!

0:19:060:19:08

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:19:080:19:10

-Good to see you, Martin.

-Hello.

-To celebrate the record coming out,

0:19:100:19:14

-we've laid on this huge spread for you.

-Fantastic.

-Just tuck in.

0:19:140:19:17

-It's a beautiful place.

-Yes, it is a beautiful place.

0:19:170:19:20

-Now, you've brought this out.

-Yes.

-The Lexicon Of Love II.

0:19:200:19:23

And, um, it's a sequel to the original, in 1982.

0:19:230:19:28

-So, there we are, 34 years later.

-Very patient fans out there.

-Yes.

0:19:280:19:32

-It's taken a while.

-It felt right.

-What made you decide to...

0:19:320:19:36

Yeah, yeah. The original came out in '82, way back,

0:19:360:19:38

-with The Look of Love and Poison Arrow, and all this stuff.

-Yes.

0:19:380:19:41

Recent years, well, 30 years has rolled by, and I kind of

0:19:410:19:44

thought I'd bring some wisdom and experience to a project.

0:19:440:19:47

-Were you unhappy with the original?

-No, it was fantastic.

0:19:470:19:49

It was a great record, wasn't it?

0:19:490:19:51

-It's public property, you know.

-It was a huge hit.

0:19:510:19:53

But it would be nice to go back and re-inhabit some of those songs,

0:19:530:19:56

I thought. I was playing a show at the Albert Hall, with Anne Dudley

0:19:560:19:58

conducting the Southbank Sinfonia.

0:19:580:20:01

Playing a lot of shows with orchestras, so I thought I'd make...

0:20:010:20:04

Well, calling it The Lexicon of Love II gave me the excuse to make

0:20:040:20:07

a big, bold, orchestral, lavish record.

0:20:070:20:10

And so what's changed, and what sort of thing has changed...?

0:20:100:20:13

-The world's changed, hasn't it?

-The world's changed? Yeah.

0:20:130:20:16

It's a wonderful place. So, I thought I'd write

0:20:160:20:18

some songs and see if the world was still a very romantic place.

0:20:180:20:21

-And is it?

-It is for me, yeah. Very much so. After all these years.

0:20:210:20:25

-In the 1980s...

-I think so.

0:20:250:20:26

..presumably you would have walked into the pub, you know,

0:20:260:20:29

the miners' strike's going on, there's people smoking and drinking,

0:20:290:20:32

and doing all the things you can't do any more,

0:20:320:20:35

was it romantic then, do you think,

0:20:350:20:37

or do we look back through rose-tinted spectacles at the past?

0:20:370:20:40

No, I think... Well, the past's gone, all we've got is the present.

0:20:400:20:45

Today, yeah. I mean, I've been married 30 years,

0:20:450:20:47

and I thought to myself, "That's probably one of the most significant

0:20:470:20:50

"things that's happened to me." Yeah, I feel good about that.

0:20:500:20:53

-That's quite a romantic idea.

-My wife's here.

0:20:530:20:55

Very nice to meet you. Hello!

0:20:550:20:57

-Congratulations!

-Thank you.

0:20:570:20:59

I thought I'd go back and find some inspiration in some

0:20:590:21:02

romantic songs, yeah.

0:21:020:21:03

Well, um...

0:21:030:21:05

what sort of things were you listening to in the 1980s?

0:21:050:21:07

What was your...

0:21:070:21:09

James Chance And The Contortions, do you remember those guys?

0:21:090:21:12

-Not really.

-Joy Division.

0:21:120:21:14

-Yes, of course. Yeah, yeah.

-Earth, Wind and Fire, Chic. You know,

0:21:140:21:17

we were trying to combine both

0:21:170:21:19

the world of disco and the world of edgy pop, I guess, back then.

0:21:190:21:23

-Yeah.

-Now, we've got some lovely footage here of...

0:21:230:21:27

-Well, I say it's lovely...

-I've got a long illustrious past.

0:21:270:21:31

No, it is. I mean, this record

0:21:310:21:33

was a huge and important record when this came out.

0:21:330:21:36

-So, let's have a look at this now. This is 1982, Poison Arrow.

-OK.

0:21:360:21:40

# If I were to say to you "Can you keep a secret?"

0:21:400:21:43

# Would you know just what to do or where to keep it?

0:21:430:21:47

# Then I say I love you Foul the situation

0:21:470:21:51

# Hey, girl, I thought we were the right combination

0:21:510:21:55

# Who broke my heart? You did, you did

0:21:550:21:58

# Bow to the target Blame Cupid, Cupid

0:21:580:22:02

# You think you're smart Stupid, stupid

0:22:020:22:06

# Shoot that poison arrow to my heart

0:22:060:22:10

# Shoot that poison arrow

0:22:100:22:11

# Shoot that poison arrow to my heart

0:22:140:22:16

# Shoot that poison arrow...#

0:22:170:22:19

-APPLAUSE

-Thank you!

0:22:210:22:24

You had to have a gold lame suit back then.

0:22:250:22:27

-Have you still got that suit?

-No, I do not have that suit. No, no.

0:22:270:22:30

-What happened to it?

-That suit went missing. I left it in Japan.

0:22:300:22:33

After about six months touring,

0:22:330:22:35

I kind of left it in the Keio Plaza Hotel.

0:22:350:22:37

Are you saying there's a Japanese man walking around in that suit?

0:22:370:22:40

-Possibly, yes.

-Palming himself off as you, or just enjoying himself.

0:22:400:22:44

-I think so, yeah.

-Just relaxing of an evening in it.

0:22:440:22:47

-Yeah, a gold suit. Elvis had one, didn't he?

-Yeah.

0:22:470:22:49

-Yeah, many, many have worn those suits.

-You were all from Sheffield?

0:22:490:22:52

-Yeah, originally.

-Sheffield, early on, there were people like

0:22:520:22:56

Joe Cocker, Paul Carrick, then there was Human League, all of you.

0:22:560:22:59

Later, you've got Pulp, Richard Hall, Arctic Monkeys.

0:22:590:23:01

it's got a big history. Why do you think that is?

0:23:010:23:04

Sheffield in the early '80s was a great place to be Bohemian.

0:23:040:23:07

Yeah, and have no money. It was a great place.

0:23:070:23:10

You could go and see Cabaret Voltaire, or Def Leppard,

0:23:100:23:12

or Pulp, Clock DVA and the Human League, yeah.

0:23:120:23:15

It was very inspiring.

0:23:150:23:17

But it's great, when you first start out, to have a lot of bands

0:23:170:23:19

to compete against, isn't it?

0:23:190:23:21

-I think that's a big part of making music.

-Yeah.

0:23:210:23:24

-Very inspiring.

-Now, will you be out in touring shows?

0:23:240:23:26

-Can we see this being performed?

-Yeah.

0:23:260:23:29

Playing festivals through summer,

0:23:290:23:31

but in October we play with Anne Dudley conducting,

0:23:310:23:34

South Bank Sinfonia with ABC. We start in Manchester,

0:23:340:23:37

-sort of mid-October.

-Well, the record sounds wonderful.

0:23:370:23:41

-Great to have you.

-Thank you.

-Thank you for joining us, Martin Fry!

we welcome Wilko Johnson!

0:42:420:42:44

CHEERING

0:42:440:42:46

Lovely to see you.

0:42:460:42:47

It's great that you've come here on the show.

0:42:500:42:53

You've got this great book out, Don't You Leave Me Here.

0:42:530:42:57

Very good title.

0:42:570:42:59

What made you decide to write this book now?

0:42:590:43:01

You know, was it you wanted to look back,

0:43:010:43:03

wanted to build a new conservatory, get some money?

0:43:030:43:05

Well, actually, the publishers - Little, Brown -

0:43:050:43:09

approached me to do a book.

0:43:090:43:12

I'd never written a book before.

0:43:120:43:15

I assumed that they wanted some kind of account

0:43:150:43:19

of my encounter with terminal cancer.

0:43:190:43:23

And I thought, well, OK...

0:43:230:43:25

and I'll perhaps put in a bit of background to explain who I am.

0:43:250:43:31

Your life story - sort of sandwich it in there!

0:43:310:43:35

And it ended up turning into my story

0:43:350:43:37

from my origins in the Thames Estuary

0:43:370:43:40

up to sitting here with you, more or less.

0:43:400:43:43

Famously, you were given ten months to live a couple of years ago.

0:43:430:43:47

-Yeah.

-But you were saved from certain death.

-I was indeed. Yes.

0:43:470:43:50

Did that make you focus on trying to record your life?

0:43:500:43:55

Well, for one thing...

0:43:550:43:56

I mean, I had that year, or slightly more than a year,

0:43:560:43:59

thinking I was going to die.

0:43:590:44:02

And it's a strange kind of way,

0:44:020:44:06

it gives you a different way of looking at things,

0:44:060:44:08

when you think the future is a universal blank.

0:44:080:44:12

And now it's fading from me like a dream, you know.

0:44:120:44:17

I'm back in the world.

0:44:170:44:19

I was maybe trying to capture it.

0:44:190:44:22

Did you enjoy writing the book? Looking back over everything?

0:44:220:44:25

Yes, I started doing it, I got into it,

0:44:250:44:28

I thought, this is really good, I'm a writer!

0:44:280:44:31

And then I started getting up to the sad bit,

0:44:310:44:35

where my wife died,

0:44:350:44:38

12 years ago now...

0:44:380:44:40

In fact, it's her birthday today.

0:44:400:44:42

Aw! But we were together for 40 years,

0:44:420:44:46

since we were teenagers.

0:44:460:44:48

She died of cancer in 2004.

0:44:480:44:51

And I got up to that point,

0:44:510:44:53

and I didn't feel so good writing away any more.

0:44:530:44:57

I'd open up the laptop and burst into tears.

0:44:570:45:00

Anyway, I thought, "Pull myself together and carry on through it."

0:45:000:45:05

The other thing, of course,

0:45:050:45:07

is that you talk about Dr Feelgood.

0:45:070:45:09

They were a very important band, I think, you know,

0:45:090:45:11

now, historically, you look back...

0:45:110:45:13

Some people say they were the first British blues band,

0:45:130:45:16

but they were also one of the first punk bands before there was punk,

0:45:160:45:19

you know, a band that couldn't care less.

0:45:190:45:21

We hadn't had one of those for a long time, you know.

0:45:210:45:24

When you look back,

0:45:240:45:25

is it with fondness that you look back at Dr Feelgood?

0:45:250:45:27

Well, I do. I always have done.

0:45:270:45:31

You know, the band ended very acrimoniously and we split up,

0:45:310:45:36

and I didn't want to dwell on that,

0:45:360:45:41

I just walked away and I thought,

0:45:410:45:43

I just want to remember the good times.

0:45:430:45:45

And, in fact, after this argument in the newspapers,

0:45:450:45:48

they were blaming me and saying it was all my fault and everything.

0:45:480:45:53

And now, in this book, for the first time,

0:45:530:45:55

I've written out a proper account of how we bust up

0:45:550:45:58

and, believe me, they done me wrong!

0:45:580:46:00

Never! Don't hold a grudge, nurture it!

0:46:020:46:05

LAUGHTER

0:46:050:46:07

We've got a bit of film footage.

0:46:070:46:08

And, of course, you then formed the Solid Senders,

0:46:080:46:11

-which I nearly joined!

-You did, didn't you?

0:46:110:46:12

Well, I auditioned, but then I never heard anything again!

0:46:120:46:15

You came along on a motorbike!

0:46:150:46:16

I did. That's right. And then people had just started gobbing -

0:46:160:46:19

it was those magical days!

0:46:190:46:21

Let's have a look.

0:46:210:46:22

# Jet plane heading for the runway Swimming like a fish

0:46:270:46:29

# Through the heat haze

0:46:290:46:31

# It's really getting strange

0:46:310:46:33

# The way the weather change

0:46:330:46:35

# Caterpillar tractor is crawling up the snow

0:46:350:46:37

# I wanna bottle up and go

0:46:370:46:39

# Don't want to go out and get made

0:46:390:46:42

# Talk to the squares from the jet set

0:46:420:46:44

# They're try to learn their line

0:46:440:46:46

# Two weeks behind the time

0:46:460:46:48

# Standing round lookin' like I'm really in the know

0:46:480:46:51

# I wanna bottle and go Ah!

0:46:510:46:53

CHEERING

0:47:070:47:10

That is great.

0:47:120:47:13

Was it nice being a front man after all that time?

0:47:130:47:16

Erm...

0:47:160:47:18

I don't know. I liked both ways.

0:47:180:47:20

When I worked with Ian Dury and the Blockheads,

0:47:200:47:23

it was kind of fabulous being a sideman,

0:47:230:47:25

particularly with that great rhythm section.

0:47:250:47:29

Letting Ian stand at the front

0:47:290:47:30

and get all nervous and all that, you know...

0:47:300:47:33

-I like it both ways.

-Yeah.

0:47:330:47:35

And you've also recently - or relatively recently -

0:47:350:47:37

-you were in the Game Of Thrones.

-Yes, I was.

0:47:370:47:40

And were playing this sort of tongueless violent mute psychopath.

0:47:400:47:44

Did that open up a desire to take on more acting?

0:47:440:47:48

It was the first time I've ever done any acting.

0:47:480:47:51

They... I got this call to go - would I go and audition?

0:47:510:47:55

They told me it was for an American television series.

0:47:550:47:57

I thought it was going to be

0:47:570:47:59

something like Xena the Warrior Princess.

0:47:590:48:01

I thought, yeah, I'd like to do that,

0:48:010:48:03

maybe I'll get a leather jacket out of it or something.

0:48:030:48:06

I got there and realised, no, this is much bigger!

0:48:060:48:09

It was absolutely great,

0:48:090:48:11

because my character's tongue was cut out

0:48:110:48:13

and I didn't have to learn any lines!

0:48:130:48:15

LAUGHTER

0:48:150:48:16

I just had to stand round giving people dirty looks.

0:48:160:48:19

I mean, I can do that!

0:48:190:48:20

Do you fancy any more acting?

0:48:220:48:23

If they can find some more tongueless parts for me, yeah!

0:48:230:48:27

It's always good to specialise, I think.

0:48:270:48:29

It's been great having you.

0:48:290:48:31

You nearly died, I'm so pleased you've come back.

0:48:310:48:34

LAUGHTER What's your...

0:48:340:48:37

outlook for the future now?

0:48:370:48:39

Well, I suppose I'm just glad to be...

0:48:390:48:43

I mean, I can't take it in. You know, I'm here,

0:48:430:48:46

I'm looking around, I'm conscious, I'm not...

0:48:460:48:48

I should have been two years in my grave.

0:48:480:48:50

So, pretty much everything is all right, isn't it?

0:48:500:48:53

It's great. Exactly. I couldn't agree more!

0:48:530:48:55

You're pleased to be here, we're pleased you're here,

0:48:550:48:57

everything's worked out all right!

0:48:570:48:59

Thank you for joining us. Wilko Johnson!

0:48:590:49:01

The marvellous Wilko Johnson. And while we're on it -

0:49:030:49:05

earlier on I was just saying goodbye to Martin

0:49:050:49:07

and I didn't notice he was trying to take my hand

0:49:070:49:09

and I walked off, and that just isn't on.

0:49:090:49:12

Great to have you here. Thank you, sir. Martin Fry.

0:49:120:49:15

Our guests of Chit-Chat this week.

0:49:150:49:18

APPLAUSE AND CHEERING

0:54:230:54:27

# In the end it's stronger than I know how to be

0:54:520:54:56

# And I can't just spend my whole lifetime wondering

0:55:000:55:05

# I fell in love with the sound of my heels on the wooden floor

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:58:490:58:52

Thank you, Tame Impala, with The Moment.

0:58:540:58:58

Before that, Michael Kiwanuka!

0:58:580:59:01

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:59:010:59:04

And that brings us more or less

0:59:040:59:06

to the close of this night's performances,

0:59:060:59:08

which I hope you'll be able to treasure for a long time.

0:59:080:59:11

We now finish with Biffy Clyro!

0:59:110:59:13

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:59:130:59:16

# I picked it up slow

0:59:250:59:28

# But now it's just a ritual

0:59:280:59:30

# I didn't want the captain's role

0:59:310:59:34

# But I'll steer us over highs and lows

0:59:340:59:36

# It's communal

0:59:380:59:41

# But for you it's individual

0:59:410:59:44

# And that makes me hysterical

0:59:440:59:47

# I'm never gonna let you go

0:59:480:59:51

# My body's gone cold My body's gone cold

0:59:510:59:55

# My body's gone cold

0:59:550:59:57

# And I've lost control

0:59:570:59:59

# Why d'you waste your time with me?

0:59:591:00:04

# I'm just an animal

# Can you realise

1:00:061:00:10

# My head's a carnival?

1:00:101:00:13

# All I wanna feel's a little chemical rush

1:00:131:00:15

# All I really know is that it won't take long

1:00:151:00:19

# I'll eat you alive

1:00:191:00:24

# I'm just an animal!

1:00:241:00:26

# A simple love

1:00:331:00:35

# No, it could never be enough

1:00:351:00:38

# And I don't know who I can trust

1:00:381:00:41

# I'm teetering upon the edge

1:00:421:00:45

# It's visceral

1:00:461:00:47

# It's visceral

1:00:471:00:49

-# When I hurt you I can never show

-Never show

1:00:491:00:52

# This has become habitual

1:00:521:00:54

# And I will do it over and over and over and over and over

1:00:551:01:00

# My body's gone cold My body's gone cold

1:01:001:01:03

# My body's gone cold And I've lost control

1:01:031:01:06

# Why d'you waste your time with me?

1:01:061:01:12

# I'm just an animal

1:01:121:01:13

# Can you realise

1:01:131:01:18

# My head's a carnival?

1:01:181:01:20

# All I wanna feel's a little chemical rush

1:01:201:01:24

# All I really know is that it won't take long

1:01:241:01:27

# I'll eat you alive

1:01:271:01:32

# I'm just an animal!

1:01:321:01:33

# Ooh-ooh ooh

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

1:02:441:02:48

Thank you very much, Biffy Clyro!

1:02:491:02:51

CHEERING Stop right there a moment.

1:02:511:02:54

So, we'll be back next week with a nudist party and folk dancing.

1:02:541:02:58

But you won't be able to see that,

1:02:581:03:00

because the series finishes until the autumn,

1:03:001:03:03

so it's just going to be myself and the crew and a private affair.

1:03:031:03:05

But know that we'll be in the studio anyway, thinking of you.

1:03:051:03:09

But that's the end this week.

1:03:091:03:10

Let's thank our special guests.

1:03:101:03:12

Could you give us a little bit of an underpinning beautiful groove?

1:03:121:03:15

You're very kind. Let's get in the humour.

1:03:151:03:17

To say thank you and good night to Martin Fry!

1:03:171:03:20

1:03:561:03:58

This is possibly the longest farewell we've ever done.

1:04:001:04:03

And thank you, Biffy Clyro!

1:04:031:04:06

And thanks to all of the crew.

1:04:071:04:09
