Hello and welcome to the 2016 Hyundai Mercury Prize. We are coming | :00:34. | :00:42.
to your live from the legendary rock 'n' roll music venue, the Eventim | :00:43. | :00:47.
Apollo in Hammersmith! CHEERING | :00:48. | :00:53.
An exciting night, we are in west London with arguably one of the | :00:54. | :00:57.
biggest events in the music calendar. But it is not any old | :00:58. | :01:03.
year, it is the silver Jubilee year, it is the 25th Mercury prize. In | :01:04. | :01:11.
just under one hour we will announce this year's when a but we've got a | :01:12. | :01:17.
lot to do before them. This your's 12 albums are as always an eclectic | :01:18. | :01:22.
bunch. They cross genres and galaxies. They have been recorded | :01:23. | :01:25.
all around the globe from the Isle of Wight to LA, feature four number | :01:26. | :01:31.
ones and one posthumous nod. Let's have a quick reminder of them all | :01:32. | :01:33.
now. # Everyday is the day that you saved | :01:34. | :02:07.
me #. Ayr | :02:08. | :02:13.
# Beyond me # Beyond you #. | :02:14. | :02:28.
# In God's hands I do wait # For my love on our wedding day #. | :02:29. | :02:44.
CHEERING Survey you have it. Those were the | :02:45. | :04:10.
short listed albums of the year. Before we came on air, many of the | :04:11. | :04:17.
artists who are short listed performed for us in this very room | :04:18. | :04:21.
and you can enjoy all of those performances on the BBC I play. | :04:22. | :04:26.
Let's congratulate all of the artists short listed this year, | :04:27. | :04:30.
ladies and gentlemen. CHEERING | :04:31. | :04:36.
Some good work. During the course of this show I'm going to reveal one by | :04:37. | :04:44.
16 finalists from those 12 who are still in the running to win this | :04:45. | :04:48.
your's prize. Five of these have been chosen by the judging panel and | :04:49. | :04:53.
the other was chosen by a public vote held back in August. I can | :04:54. | :04:59.
exclusively reveal one of those finalists, a classically trained | :05:00. | :05:04.
musician, singer and Birmingham conservator graduate! Oh yes. Her | :05:05. | :05:11.
album, The Dreaming Room, is rich and seductive, with Phenomenal | :05:12. | :05:19.
Woman, please give it up for Laura Mvula! | :05:20. | :05:38.
# Nobody ever told her she was beauty | :05:39. | :05:45.
# One day she realised she was already free | :05:46. | :05:49.
# The colour in her eyes was fire rising | :05:50. | :05:52.
# She found the light inside, a new horizon | :05:53. | :06:00.
# Oh my, my, oh my, she flies # O my my, oh my, she flies | :06:01. | :06:09.
# Oh my my, oh my, she flies oh my my, oh my, she flies. | :06:10. | :06:32.
# She battled through in every kind of tribulation | :06:33. | :06:38.
# She revelled in adventure and imagination | :06:39. | :06:41.
# She never listened to no hater, liar | :06:42. | :06:44.
# Breaking boundaries and chasing fire | :06:45. | :06:49.
# O my my, oh my, she flies # Oh my my, oh my, she flies all my | :06:50. | :06:56.
my, oh my, she flies # Cause they don't know you, where | :06:57. | :07:10.
you come from or where you're going. CHEERING | :07:11. | :08:12.
The phenomenal Laura Mvula, ladies and gentlemen! | :08:13. | :08:19.
Congratulations, Laura. Brilliant stuff. Right, the tension is | :08:20. | :08:25.
mounting in Hammersmith Apollo, the keen eyed among you will see that | :08:26. | :08:30.
we've got a change of going on. How is everyone feeling on the tension | :08:31. | :08:35.
scale? Pretty tense? More excited than tens? Just ready for a Barbie, | :08:36. | :08:44.
whatever happens? Well, I can now excitingly reveal that we have | :08:45. | :08:48.
another of our six finalists in contention for the gong tonight, who | :08:49. | :08:55.
I am sharing by the way in no particular order. Our next finalist | :08:56. | :08:59.
started out on pirate radio in east London. Inspired by his DJ father's | :09:00. | :09:07.
house parties, he kept it in the family when he formed record label | :09:08. | :09:16.
By Better Know with his brother. Fast forward a few years and he | :09:17. | :09:22.
released his short listed album, Konnichiwa. With showdown, let's | :09:23. | :09:35.
hear it for Skepta! # Man's never been in | :09:36. | :09:51.

#. CHEERING | :12:41. | :12:55.
What a performance, thank you so much for that, Skepta. What a year | :12:56. | :13:03.
for him. The crowd on their feet. No settling back down. Ready to move | :13:04. | :13:10.
on, thank you, Skepta, and good luck with the wonderful Konnichiwa. Now, | :13:11. | :13:14.
before we discover who else is vying for this your's Album of the Year | :13:15. | :13:24.
let's reflect on the first 24 years of the mercury Price. It's kind of a | :13:25. | :13:29.
history of three decades of British and Irish music. We thought it would | :13:30. | :13:32.
be fun to do it alphabetically. Where shall we start? Over 25 years | :13:33. | :13:40.
285 albums have graced the Mercury short list. And the letter A seemed | :13:41. | :13:44.
advantageous. Alt-J, Antony and the Johnsons are | :13:45. | :13:58.
amongst past winners. Let us go back to the Advent prize when achtung | :13:59. | :14:02.
baby was one of the first nominees in 1992. All the luck was out for | :14:03. | :14:11.
the Irish... The multi-million seller was beaten by primal scream's | :14:12. | :14:20.
superb Aladdin Sane. Badly Drawn Boy or James Blake, or even twice | :14:21. | :14:30.
nominated Guy Barker. We have gone with Britpop, which burns so | :14:31. | :14:36.
brightly in the mid-19 90s Mercury land. Suede's electrifying debut | :14:37. | :14:41.
stormed the charts and impress the judges but in 94 and 95, the boys | :14:42. | :14:46.
and girls were nominated but missed out. But Britpop bounced back in 96 | :14:47. | :14:56.
when Pulp took the accolade. We are very pleased. C is all about the | :14:57. | :15:09.
cash... No contactless cards here. With the traditional ?20,000 prize | :15:10. | :15:12.
rising since inflation, this year the winner will pocket nearly 40 | :15:13. | :15:19.
grand. Is that a cheque? To celebrate the work of new artists | :15:20. | :15:23.
and over the last quarter of the century, the Mercury Prize has been | :15:24. | :15:28.
a debutante delight, 16 of the 23 different prizewinners have won with | :15:29. | :15:37.
their debut record. E is for... Elegant Slumming was the surprise | :15:38. | :15:45.
winner ahead of her. It is like a fantastic disco. And E is also for | :15:46. | :15:53.
Elbow. They were equally elated as they bagged the 2008 prize. This is | :15:54. | :15:57.
literally the best thing that has happened to us. In 2004, Fortune | :15:58. | :16:03.
favoured the fantastic Franz Ferdinand. Although F is also for | :16:04. | :16:11.
Simon Frith, the journalist and actual professor of pop has had the | :16:12. | :16:16.
unenviable task of chairing those on really Mercury judges from the | :16:17. | :16:20.
outset. Any stressful moments? Every year! In 2001, those cheeky cartoon | :16:21. | :16:26.
apes the guerrillas... Were not happy. As they became the first act | :16:27. | :16:35.
to turn down the Mercury nomination. At least Gomez were more gracious in | :16:36. | :16:49.
1998. It is ridiculous to win here. What to Pulp, Dizzee Rascal, Elbow, | :16:50. | :16:54.
Bat for Lashes and Coldplay have in common? Thank you very much! A | :16:55. | :17:03.
hat-trick of nominations. Of the 83-time nominees, two of them are in | :17:04. | :17:10.
contention this year. -- eight, three time. The first helping the | :17:11. | :17:16.
alphabetical guide to the Mercury Prize. No spoilers but more coming | :17:17. | :17:23.
up. Back to the task in hand, another new twist for the prize this | :17:24. | :17:26.
year was to allow the public to choose one of the six finalists from | :17:27. | :17:31.
the short list of 12 and I can reveal the winner of the public vote | :17:32. | :17:37.
and another contender for this year's Mercury Prize, which we will | :17:38. | :17:41.
discover in 40 minutes or so... Whatever happens, this band will | :17:42. | :17:45.
walk away with the gong for the longest album title of the year! I | :17:46. | :17:50.
Like It When You Sleep, for You Are So Beautiful yet So Unaware of It. | :17:51. | :17:55.
This is their second number one album, performing love me, it is The | :17:56. | :17:58.
1975. # And there's things | :17:59. | :18:34.
we'd like to change # Next thing you'll find you're | :18:35. | :18:46.
reading 'bout yourself. # Oh, well, just keep looking, | :18:47. | :18:53.
looking, looking, looking. # If that's what you | :18:54. | :19:06.
wanna do (oh, yeah) # You've been reading | :19:07. | :19:17.
'bout yourself. # Caught up in fashion | :19:18. | :19:19.
Karcrashian panache and a bag # Let's be friends and portray | :19:20. | :19:30.
we possess something important # And do the things | :19:31. | :19:47.
we like, meaning. # A decline in the standards | :19:48. | :19:49.
are what we accept # If that's what you | :19:50. | :19:54.
wanna do (oh, yeah) # Be the man that gets | :19:55. | :20:11.
'em up on their feet Thank you! | :20:12. | :20:50.
APPLAUSE Were having that! In Hammersmith! | :20:51. | :21:59.
And we will need to check that the next performance is long enough for | :22:00. | :22:04.
me to get my dustpan and brush out! The clearing up is taken care of! | :22:05. | :22:10.
Congratulations to The 1975! APPLAUSE | :22:11. | :22:15.
Enjoy rightly so. To be young again! Winners of the first ever Mercury | :22:16. | :22:20.
Prize fan vote. Well done! Were happy through to reviewing the 2016 | :22:21. | :22:28.
finalists and while you ponder what Z might be for, let us pick up where | :22:29. | :22:36.
we left off. Welcome back to the ages eight, I is for I Am a Bird | :22:37. | :22:45.
Now, Antony and the Johnsons flew away with the award in 2005 and | :22:46. | :22:49.
Anthony had a unique take on the prize. It is a contest between | :22:50. | :22:53.
Orange and spaceships and a potted plant and a spoon! J is for... Jazz! | :22:54. | :23:04.
Jazz has been represented in all but six of the 25 short lists. But is | :23:05. | :23:10.
jazz jinxed? The judges are yet to give a jazz album the gong. K could | :23:11. | :23:21.
be for Kasabian, Kaiser Chiefs or KT Tunstall... But if we're talking | :23:22. | :23:25.
about media moments, it can only stand for... Lauren Laverne, who | :23:26. | :23:36.
beat Amy Winehouse's back to this really is too much. -- Klaxons. L is | :23:37. | :23:42.
for a London. The awards have always been held in the capital and nine of | :23:43. | :23:46.
the 23 different winners hail from the big smoke. Including five of the | :23:47. | :23:57.
past ten factors. -- winners. M goes to Mark Morrison. He arrived at the | :23:58. | :24:04.
Mercury awards in 96 with his smashing debut album. The best song | :24:05. | :24:08.
about sexual betrayal since I heard it through the grapevine, it is that | :24:09. | :24:13.
good. The judges were not ready to crown the sulking. N is fourth 1997 | :24:14. | :24:24.
and new forms. The ground-breaking album but drum and bass on the map | :24:25. | :24:33.
and went ahead of Radiohead. O is for the odds, the bookies are kept | :24:34. | :24:37.
in business, the music world equivalent of the Grand National, | :24:38. | :24:40.
the favourite could well fall before the final hurdle. They start off at | :24:41. | :24:46.
10-1, romping in... When the nominations were announced this | :24:47. | :24:49.
year, Blackstar made the front running. Do not adjust your set, P | :24:50. | :24:57.
is for pop, the Spice Girls made the short list in 97. Not the first time | :24:58. | :25:02.
the Mercury Prize had flown the flag for pure pop music, take that in 94 | :25:03. | :25:08.
and it is possible it went to the head. The song is about other | :25:09. | :25:15.
people, like the Beatles, we don't flatter ourselves by comparing | :25:16. | :25:23.
ourselves to the Beatles. Q is for the Queen, PJ Harvey. The four-time | :25:24. | :25:28.
nominee is the only artist to win twice. Triumphing in 2001 with | :25:29. | :25:34.
Stories from the City, Stories from the Sea, but she was unable to | :25:35. | :25:37.
attend, stuck in USA because of the terror attacks. And that the zacro | :25:38. | :25:48.
11 decade later with letting them shake. Thank you very much for this | :25:49. | :25:52.
award. Thank you for the recognition of my work. R is for Radiohead. 19 | :25:53. | :26:03.
years since they were first nominated for the classic album, OK | :26:04. | :26:10.
computer and with three nominations from the subsequent six albums, they | :26:11. | :26:14.
are the most short listed band in Mercury Prize history. They have | :26:15. | :26:18.
never won the prize so will they take gold at the fifth attempt? We | :26:19. | :26:24.
will find out tonight. We will find out tonight. Now it is time to find | :26:25. | :26:30.
out who will be the next of the six finalists. We have had three of them | :26:31. | :26:35.
so three more yet to come. This year the world lost an irreplaceable | :26:36. | :26:40.
talent, an artist whose creative spirit have kept him at the cutting | :26:41. | :26:43.
edge of pop music throughout his extraordinary career, which spanned | :26:44. | :26:48.
almost half a century. David Bowie was an endlessly surprising and | :26:49. | :26:52.
inventive artist and his parting gift was no exception. Released two | :26:53. | :26:57.
days before his death, he gave us his 20th album, Blackstar. Tony | :26:58. | :27:03.
Visconti said his death was no different from his life. A work of | :27:04. | :27:08.
art. It seems fitting that David Bowie receives the first ever a | :27:09. | :27:13.
posthumous Mercury nomination. Tonight, with a special performance | :27:14. | :27:19.
of Lazarus by the star of the David Bowie musical, please welcome | :27:20. | :27:21.
Michael C Hall... APPLAUSE | :27:22. | :27:52.
# I'm so high it makes my brain whirl | :27:53. | :28:54.
Think you very much indeed, Michael C Hall, with that special | :28:55. | :31:17.
performance of Lazarus from David Bowie's album, Blackstar. Two more | :31:18. | :31:21.
finalists left to Le Mans, the first is a bad about height of their | :31:22. | :31:26.
powers and this year the most short listed artist in the 25 year history | :31:27. | :31:30.
of the Mercury Prize. They cannot be here tonight but they've filmed a | :31:31. | :31:36.
special performance shot by none other than Hollywood director Paul | :31:37. | :31:41.
Thomas Anderson, from their album, A Moon Shaped Pool, here are | :31:42. | :31:49.

CHEERING Thank you Jonny and Thom of that | :35:18. | :37:18.
performance of Present Tends from A Moon Shaped Pool. They have now | :37:19. | :37:23.
reached the last of our finalists very much in the running for the | :37:24. | :37:28.
Mercury Prize this year. Love Hate was accorded between Los Angeles and | :37:29. | :37:35.
the Isle of Wight, the second album by this artist and his second time | :37:36. | :37:39.
on the Mercury Prize short list, performing the title track from his | :37:40. | :37:45.
album, Love Hate, here is Michael Q Aluko. -- Michael Kiwanuka. | :37:46. | :38:15.

# I need something to give me something wonderful | :41:16. | :41:52.
Fantastic stuff, first ever session on my radio show, thank you very | :41:53. | :43:04.
much Michael Kiwanuka with the brilliant Love Hate. We know that | :43:05. | :43:07.
you've all been waiting to see how we have dealt with this difficult | :43:08. | :43:12.
end of the alphabet letters. Wait no longer is the final part of our a to | :43:13. | :43:20.
Z. S is for all things speech. Starting with Speech Debelle was the | :43:21. | :43:29.
shock win in 2009. And then the other speeches. I really honestly | :43:30. | :43:34.
haven't got much to say. I've never speechless. I can't believe I've | :43:35. | :43:43.
actually won this. We both want to thank our parents, thank you for not | :43:44. | :43:48.
making us get jobs. Thank you so much, Mike Brown 's over there. -- | :43:49. | :43:59.
my Gran 's over there. One talent tapped his way to the trophy at the | :44:00. | :44:03.
turn of the century and his unexpected triumph came at the | :44:04. | :44:07.
expense of blur, and the manic Street preachers. Bargain bin at the | :44:08. | :44:15.
game. U could be for urban hymns all for underworld but we are going with | :44:16. | :44:21.
Underground. When Dizzee Rascal was the winner aged 18 and he brought | :44:22. | :44:24.
grime out of the East London underground and exposed it to the | :44:25. | :44:28.
mainstream. This is for every underground pirate radio station, | :44:29. | :44:32.
every underground DJ, just do your thing. V is the violins and | :44:33. | :44:41.
virtuosos. The awards have regularly supported both classical music and | :44:42. | :44:45.
folk although there is yet to be a winner from either genre. | :44:46. | :44:52.
Artic monkeys waltzed away with the prize, giving the prize is one of | :44:53. | :45:00.
the greatest one-liners. Somebody call 999! And this is the only | :45:01. | :45:07.
Mercury winning album ever to feature not one but two number one | :45:08. | :45:16.
singles. X can only be for The xx, the South London Trio delighting the | :45:17. | :45:20.
judges in 2010 with a delicately self titled debut. Y is for the | :45:21. | :45:32.
young guns, just on the youngest ever nominee at 17. Dizzee Rascal is | :45:33. | :45:41.
the youngest winner, Jake Bugg was 19,. Silk was also. Adele was a | :45:42. | :45:47.
relative bedroom by the time she gets her first nomination. Finally, | :45:48. | :45:58.
z is for zeitgeist, each year the short list represents the sound of | :45:59. | :46:02.
the year in British and Irish music with some amazing records on the | :46:03. | :46:06.
list, we will soon find out which will be record of the year in this | :46:07. | :46:16.
25th year of the prize. What a mercurial history the Mercury Prize | :46:17. | :46:20.
has had, no more so than the remarkable events of 2015 when the | :46:21. | :46:24.
winner, a you face whose victory that some people speechless, | :46:25. | :46:29.
including himself, invited all of his fellow short listed artists on | :46:30. | :46:34.
stage to join him in memory of the victims of the Bataclan terrorist | :46:35. | :46:39.
attack. While we wait with bated breath for tonight's winner to be | :46:40. | :46:43.
revealed, we have a very special performance that celebrates last's | :46:44. | :46:48.
winner, back with a view song, please welcome the winner of the | :46:49. | :46:51.
2015 Mercury Prize, Benjamin Clementina. | :46:52. | :47:08.
-- Clementine. # Somewhere beyond the iron fence. | :47:09. | :47:26.
# A man must know glimpse... They say you must become the animal. # | :47:27. | :47:47.
Are good, good animal, so we go to war. # I do agree. # That men are | :47:48. | :48:07.
purely evil. # But whereas some are born with a spoon in their mouth, | :48:08. | :48:12.
others are nurtured with a bullet in your hands. Use they say you must | :48:13. | :48:27.
become an animal for the animal... The good, good animal. # And so, we | :48:28. | :48:32.
go to war. # Taste fruits of fear | :48:33. | :48:46.
in the depths of my own sorrow # Hasn't been near to me... Thank | :48:47. | :49:17.
you. APPLAUSE | :49:18. | :49:35.
Thank you very much, the spellbinding talent of Benjamin | :49:36. | :49:41.
Clementine, last's winner. We're getting closer, the prize is judged | :49:42. | :49:46.
by a panel of influential music industry movers and shakers, they | :49:47. | :49:52.
are a motley crew of journalists, broadcasters, previous short listed | :49:53. | :49:55.
artists and even a Mercury Prize winner. Since earlier this evening | :49:56. | :49:58.
they have been locked in a secret room downstairs deliberating this | :49:59. | :50:03.
important decision so we popped in to test the temperature just before | :50:04. | :50:11.
their discussions began in earnest. In this room they will decide the | :50:12. | :50:15.
winner of the Mercury Music Prize 2016. I want a voice that speaks to | :50:16. | :50:21.
me and tells me something, almost like I am having a conversation, and | :50:22. | :50:24.
that was a good thing this year, to listen to these records because | :50:25. | :50:32.
people go on about these industries, dying or dead and we have to | :50:33. | :50:38.
resuscitate it... But I got really involved with a lot of the records | :50:39. | :50:42.
so I would say the art of conversation is not dead. We are all | :50:43. | :50:49.
music fans and that is the most important thing, you cannot see | :50:50. | :50:54.
anyone is an expert, no one can say this music is better than anything | :50:55. | :50:58.
else but when you get passionate music fans you can decide on | :50:59. | :51:02.
something and hold it up and say, this is great. This is the good side | :51:03. | :51:06.
of democracy. They talk about it and I do not know if we will have a | :51:07. | :51:10.
unanimous decision but I hope everybody will be happy. It will be | :51:11. | :51:15.
an interesting discussion, I love talking about music, it is what I | :51:16. | :51:20.
do, I like to sit with like-minded people and discuss music without | :51:21. | :51:26.
coming to blows! I hope not, because these hands are registered lethal | :51:27. | :51:31.
weapons! We shovelled on the winner... -- we shall vote. There | :51:32. | :51:43.
you have it. The judges, some -- some good years in that room. We are | :51:44. | :51:48.
about to discover what they concluded that firstly, we can look | :51:49. | :51:51.
back at all six finalists as revealed tonight... # She flies... | :51:52. | :52:09.
# I'm a black man in a white world... # Beyond me... # Beyond... | :52:10. | :52:37.
# I'm a Blackstar... # I know this sounds... I love when you are | :52:38. | :52:58.
lined... -- around. Using macro in a black track-side and he is shot | :52:59. | :53:02.
down. There you have it, the six finalists | :53:03. | :53:13.
for this year's Mercury Prize but of course there were 12 short listed | :53:14. | :53:15.
albums and you can enjoy performances from of them on the BBC | :53:16. | :53:22.
iPlayer. The moment has come, it is time to reveal the Mercury Prize | :53:23. | :53:24.
2016 winner... APPLAUSE | :53:25. | :53:30.
I know! I'm going to give this honour to the musician who is no | :53:31. | :53:36.
stranger to these awards. This year he is a judge, he has three short | :53:37. | :53:40.
list mentions under his belt and he won this award with his band, Pulp, | :53:41. | :53:53.
in 1996. 2% this year's prize, please welcome... Jarvis Cocker! | :53:54. | :53:56.
APPLAUSE -- to present. | :53:57. | :54:17.
Hello! Come on, I have not been out for a while- hello! I have the | :54:18. | :54:32.
result here. I have to tell you a little bit of a story before I can | :54:33. | :54:38.
let you know who is inside. Myself and my fellow jurors, sat over | :54:39. | :54:46.
there, hello, about four months ago, we started off with 223 albums. And | :54:47. | :54:54.
we had to listen to those and that was whittled down to the 12 you have | :54:55. | :54:59.
seen performances from tonight. In the end, the winner, who was in | :55:00. | :55:07.
here, it came down to a contest between two black stars. | :55:08. | :55:27.
And we decided... Are you listening? We as a jury decided... That's... | :55:28. | :55:43.
Shut up! , on! We as a jury decided... That if David Bowie was | :55:44. | :55:48.
looking down on the Hammersmith Apollo tonight... And let us face | :55:49. | :55:57.
it, maybe he has... We have seen traces of his influence in many of | :55:58. | :56:02.
the bands we have seen tonight... If he was looking down at the | :56:03. | :56:05.
Hammersmith Apollo tonight... He would want the 2016 and I Mercury | :56:06. | :56:17.
Prize to go to... -- Hyundai. Skepta! | :56:18. | :56:29.
APPLAUSE Can't Skepta come to the stage, | :56:30. | :56:32.
please? APPLAUSE | :56:33. | :56:59.
Come on, Skepta. Get up your! -- get up your! | :57:00. | :57:24.
Get up here! APPLAUSE | :57:25. | :57:35.

for so long, it was the moment where I was, like, yo, let us do this for | :59:39. | :59:43.
ourselves, the family, all the songs we have travelled the world, no | :59:44. | :59:47.
