to the heart of London.

We're right next to some

of the capital's most iconic

landmarks, including the London Eye,

which a bit later on will become

the centrepiece of the spectacular

New Year's Eve fireworks display.

I'm Roman Kemp and very shortly

legendary performers

Nile Rodgers and CHIC will be taking

to the stage to kick off

the party as we start

the build-up to midnight.

Not only will they be performing

all those CHIC disco

classics Everybody Dance, Le Freak

and Good Times, they'll also

be belting out a string

of other worldwide hits

that the multi-talented Nile Rodgers

has contributed to over the past

five decades, including

David Bowie's Let's Dance,

Diana Ross's I'm Coming Out,

Sister Sledge's We Are Family,

Daft Punk and Pharrell Williams'

Get Lucky and many, many more.

But back to the fireworks.

As you can see, the Elizabeth Tower,

home to the Great Clock and Big Ben,

is currently undergoing a huge

restoration project.

But it still has a very

important part to play

in tonight's celebrations.

It may be difficult to see it under

all that scaffolding, but you'll

certainly be able to hear it

when the famous chimes of Big Ben -

which have been specially

reinstated for tonight -

ring out as we count

down to midnight.

All evening, tens of thousands

of people have been gathering along

Victoria Embankment to secure

the best vantage point in readiness

to welcome in 2018, and here

on BBC One we will be bringing

you spectacular coverage of

the world famous firework display.

By the way, this programme

So I don't want to break the vibe,

but I have to tell you guys, I am so

blessed and so thankful to be

standing here on this stage tonight.

Yeah, some of you people have got

the right idea, light up your

cellphones for me. Come on, light up

your cellphones, unless they took

them away. So a little over seven

years ago I was diagnosed with

extremely aggressive cancer and you

will not believe this, but just two

months ago I had yet another cancer

operation. And it was actually, I

mean... I can't tell you. I have

never missed a show in my entire

life and I was so sick that I

actually missed one show and my band

went on stage for me with Earth,

wind and Fire. It was amazing. I was

that close to death. But tonight I

am standing here with you in London

tonight! CHEERING

And they cut it out of my body and I

am cancer free! CHEERING

So last year in the UK we had the

best year of our lives, I mean,

Glastonbury was incredible. So I

thank the BBC so much for having us

here tonight to end this year, this

really... Semi-tragic year. And

start with a really good New Year.
