The Hives and Bombay Bicycle Club Reading and Leeds Festival

This programme contains scenes of Hello and welcome to Reading

Festival, 2012. We have got a wonderful weekend of music for you.

We start tonight with a band that haven't been here for 33 years,

headline set from The Cure later on. Plus, we have Bombay Bicycle Club

and their good friend Lucy Rose to do an acoustic performance. I saw

her performing earlier and they drew a huge crowd. Lovely to find

out how that was for her later on. Also joining us, we are back in our

freehouse again, our second home. We have a band called Bastille to

play in an acoustic fashion later. Before we continue I want to see

back. This weekend we have a new person. I love this lady. A good

friend of ours, Jen Long is out at the Festival and although she's new

to Radio 1... She knows what she's talking about. She's a veteran,

she's done this Festival since she was a wee girl. Let's look at her

I might be the new girl here on BBC 3 at Reading but I am no newcomer

to this Festival. I have been coming here for years. One thing I

remember is all the weird things that we used to have to do to keep

from losing all our possessions and maybe our minds F you are coming to

Reading tomorrow or next year, here So, I am here outside the beautiful

Reading train station, where a lot of journeys to the Festival begin.

I have seen loads of people carrying tonnes of stuff and they

look like they're ruining themselves before the weekend's

even begun. Top tip number one: If you are walking to site, what

you need is a hot ride. Oh, yeah, check out our our wheels. This is

going to be a piece of delicious cake.

You look like you have got a lot of stuff. I have everything on me.

What have you got, what's in that bag? A tent, hat, too many clothes.

Can I show you something, this is my top tip. Right, you need to get

a trolley. That looks so much easier. Reading next year?

Definitely. OMG, what is this! This is the biggest trolley I have ever

seen in my life. Wow, I have trolley-envy. Let's find somewhere

to camp. I always used to camp in yell le

camp -- yellow camp. It's the hub of everything. You have the arena

there, we are next to the toilets. There's shops there. It's awesome.

Look at these tepbtsdz tents, when you come back late at

night how are you going to find Yeah! All you got to do is stick it

up there and you will never lose your tent. That is our top tip

number 2. So we are in, we have camped, done

all the boring stuff. It's time for top tip number 3.

This, my friends, is gaffer tape. It's indispensible at a festival.

You can use it to fix anything that breaks and even use it to shut up

noisy hipsters. My real top tip is to use it to tape up your pwobgets

so you don't lose any of your possessions when you are in the pit.

Speaking of going in the pit, let's I love Jen. I could do with some of

that gaffer tape actually. For me? Just an idea. If you want to watch

any more stuff online you can, loads of performances will be

available online. Also if you press your red button this weekend you

can see so many different performances. Stick with us, but

remember that red button, as well. That was brilliant that thing from

Jen. Reading is traditionally the festival a lot of kids come to

after A-levels and GCSEs and at my school when my mates went I have

tickets to Reading but my dad's not going to let me go unless you get

ten A*s. A lot of happy people with As down there. It's a massive end

of the summer and results and stuff. Haven't you got an announcement to

make? I do. Like, Fern, I am also pregnant. That's not the the

announcement. Serious voice. You can probably - a minute ago,

Paramore were behind us on the Main Stage and I am afraid they declined

to be filmed. It's a big shame. Nothing we can do about it. We are

not going to show you any of it. Fern can sing it. I am not going to

was it today for you, you had your own show as well as playing with

Bombay, was it good today. Good, but busy, one of the most surreal

days of my life. I can't believe it. I know it's intense with us sat

right here going yeah, good. It was brilliant, thank you. And you are

on tour at the minute. You were in Bournemouth last night, my mate was

there and he went she's brilliant. That's nice. Neil liked it anyway.

Have you got a crazy rest of the year now? Yeah, it's insane. The

album is out next month and it's touring until Christmas. Also as

well as doing that, making delicious tea. Making tea and jam

as a side project. I talked about this on the radio a lot. You make a

lovely tea, my boyfriend's fond of and a nice jam. How did you get

into doing this? It was by accident. I didn't have CDs to sell at my

gigs, so I made some tea to sell as merchandise. The thing is I know

for a fact that you and Fern will become best friends, you bring the

tea and jam and she bakes all the time. Constantly. But never eats

any of it. I am now. Eating for two now. You are a feeder, so you two

together would have a lovely Tea Party. We really would! How was it

with Bombay? I was watching the gig earlier and the crowd was huge.

think as well yeah, looking at them on stage, everyone was looking at

each other, being what the hell is going on? It was an amazing thing

to be a part of today. There was also a lot of people trying to make

human pyramids on the stage which is a new thing, I have not seen

before. That's ambitious. It's a big moment for the the band, though.

You have been with them for a long time, for them to do the Main Stage,

I saw them at T In The Park as well, it's huge for them. I feel they're

finally getting the sort of recognition they deserve, it's good.

live here on BBC 3 on The Main Stage. The last time they were here

there you go. Right. I tell you what, we are having a lovely time

in our treehouse, already two great acoustics, Bastille just then and

Lucy Rose. They came straight off stage and they're having a hectic

day. We are seen good music today, we got to watch Jay earlier and I

was chuffed to see the crowd react well to them. Absolutely full tent

at Reading. It was amazing. I think that album, surely The Mercury

nominations come out soon, I would put that at the top of the list.

is beautiful and has a beautiful voice. It's not long until The Cure

get on The Main Stage. Excitement is building. People are starting to

rush to the front of the stage. should get more background, maybe

you have not heard much of The Cure before. Here is the story of why

this band are just so special. From the flood of bands that

emerged in the aftermath of punk rock few have been as enduring and

popular as The Cure. Led through various incarnations by

frontman rob Robert Smith, they've gone from goth to filling stadiums.

They made our debut to promote their first album Three imaginary

We were overwhelmed at how stupid everyone was in the record business

and we built up this reputation for being sullen and it was main mainly

through politeness, we didn't want to openly laugh at people.

We want to do something Beatlesy. Rejecting the goth tag, a more

populist Cure emerged and hits rocketed the band to worldwide

there. It's raining. Whenever we put this freehouse up, it rains, I

am afraid. People are still having a good time. They will keep having

fun. Absolutely. So, we are kind of about to get ready for the

headliners tonight, The Cure. Over the weekend we have incredible acts,

Florence and The Machine and Kasabian. And Foo Fighters, one of

those bands you can see live again and again and the set never gets

boring. They mix it up and they're playing a long set on Sunday. I am

not sure what plans are. Someone said three hours. Yeah, it is.
