Hello and welcome to a festive feast of carols by candlelight

0:00:080:00:12

as Songs of Praise celebrates Christmas with some glorious singing

0:00:120:00:15

and some very special star guests.

0:00:150:00:18

Joining us will be award-winning choir Only Boys Aloud.

0:00:190:00:24

Kevin Whately and Tina Hobley tell the story of the first Christmas.

0:00:240:00:29

One of the readings I'm doing is about the shepherds watching

0:00:290:00:32

their flock by night when the angel comes down,

0:00:320:00:35

which is one of those things that you remember most as a child.

0:00:350:00:40

So it's hugely evocative for me as well.

0:00:400:00:42

My three children are besotted with Christmas

0:00:420:00:45

and we've been singing Christmas carols since Easter.

0:00:450:00:48

We're all very geared up for Christmas in our house.

0:00:480:00:51

I'll be singing a new version of O Holy Night,

0:00:520:00:55

and superstar songstress Katherine Jenkins sings her favourite carols.

0:00:550:01:01

Tonight, I'm going to be singing two carols.

0:01:010:01:03

One is called Angels From The Realms Of Glory, which is traditional

0:01:030:01:07

and everyone will know,

0:01:070:01:08

and the second one is something called Sleep Quietly, My Jesus,

0:01:080:01:12

which is a little lullaby I used to sing as a chorister

0:01:120:01:14

when I was in Midnight Mass.

0:01:140:01:16

MUSIC: "Wonderful Christmas Time" by Paul McCartney

0:01:240:01:27

We've come to north-west London, close to Maida Vale,

0:01:290:01:32

home to possibly the most famous zebra crossing in the world

0:01:320:01:36

outside Abbey Road Studios.

0:01:360:01:38

Just round the corner, in St John's Wood, another famous landmark,

0:01:410:01:45

Lord's Cricket Ground.

0:01:450:01:47

Almost midway between the two is the location for our candlelit carols.

0:01:490:01:54

St Mark's Church.

0:01:540:01:57

Throughout December, Christians all over the world

0:01:570:02:00

have been symbolically watching and waiting

0:02:000:02:03

for the birth of Jesus Christ, lighting an advent candle each week.

0:02:030:02:07

And now the wait is almost over, as members of St Mark's Sunday school

0:02:070:02:12

light today's candle, and Kevin Whately reads from the Bible,

0:02:120:02:16

the ancient but timeless words of the prophet Isaiah.

0:02:160:02:19

The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light.

0:02:240:02:27

They that dwell in the land of the shadow of death,

0:02:280:02:32

upon them hath the light shined.

0:02:320:02:34

For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given,

0:02:360:02:41

and the government shall be upon his shoulder

0:02:410:02:44

and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor,

0:02:440:02:48

The Mighty God, The Everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.

0:02:480:02:54

And it came to pass in those days, that a decree went out

0:05:330:05:37

from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be registered.

0:05:370:05:42

This census first took place while Quirinius was governing Syria.

0:05:430:05:48

So all went to be registered, everyone to his own city.

0:05:490:05:53

Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth,

0:05:550:05:59

into Judaea, the city of David, which is called Bethlehem,

0:05:590:06:04

because he was of the house and lineage of David.

0:06:040:06:08

To be registered with Mary his betrothed wife,

0:06:080:06:11

who was with child.

0:06:110:06:13

So it was, while they were there,

0:06:140:06:17

the days were completed for her to be delivered.

0:06:170:06:20

She brought forth her firstborn son,

0:06:210:06:25

wrapped him in swaddling cloths, and laid him in a manger,

0:06:250:06:30

because there was no room for them in the inn.

0:06:300:06:33

Now for a real treat.

0:06:350:06:37

It's been said our special guest star has the voice of an angel,

0:06:370:06:40

so it's fitting that she sings for us this well-loved carol,

0:06:400:06:44

it's Angels From The Realms Of Glory and Katherine Jenkins.

0:06:440:06:48

# Angels from the realms of glory

0:07:060:07:09

# Wing your flight o'er all the earth

0:07:090:07:14

# Ye who sang creation's story

0:07:150:07:19

# Now proclaim Messiah's birth

0:09:500:09:58

And there were, in the same country, shepherds abiding in the field,

0:10:100:10:15

watching over their flock by night.

0:10:150:10:18

And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them,

0:10:190:10:22

and the glory of the Lord shone round about them,

0:10:220:10:25

and they were sore afraid.

0:10:250:10:27

And the angel said unto them,

0:10:280:10:30

"Fear not, for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy,

0:10:300:10:35

"which shall be to all people.

0:10:350:10:37

"For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour,

0:10:390:10:43

"which is Christ the Lord.

0:10:430:10:46

"And this shall be a sign unto you.

0:10:460:10:49

"Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes,

0:10:490:10:52

"lying in a manger."

0:10:520:10:54

And suddenly there was with the angel

0:10:550:10:57

a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying,

0:10:570:11:01

"Glory to God in the highest, and on Earth peace, good will toward men."

0:11:010:11:08

And it came to pass, as the angels were gone away from them

0:11:090:11:12

into heaven, the shepherds said one to another,

0:11:120:11:16

"Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is

0:11:160:11:20

"come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us."

0:11:200:11:23

And they came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph,

0:11:250:11:29

and the babe lying in a manger.

0:11:290:11:31

Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judaea

0:13:500:13:53

in the days of Herod the king,

0:13:530:13:56

behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem, saying,

0:13:560:14:02

"Where is he that is born King of the Jews?

0:14:020:14:07

"For we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him."

0:14:070:14:11

When Herod the king had heard these things, he was troubled,

0:14:130:14:16

and all Jerusalem with him.

0:14:160:14:18

And when he had gathered all the chief priests and scribes

0:14:190:14:23

and people together, he demanded of them where Christ should be born.

0:14:230:14:29

And they said unto him, "In Bethlehem of Judaea.

0:14:290:14:34

"For thus it is written by the Prophet.

0:14:340:14:37

"And thou Bethlehem, in the land of Juda,

0:14:370:14:41

"art not the least among the princes of Juda,

0:14:410:14:45

"for out of thee shall come a Governor,

0:14:450:14:48

"that shall rule my people, Israel."

0:14:480:14:51

# O holy night

0:14:550:15:00

# The stars are brightly shining

0:15:000:15:06

# It is the night of our dear Saviour's birth

0:15:060:15:12

# Long lay the world

0:15:150:15:18

# In sin and error pining

0:15:180:15:23

# Till He appeared

0:15:230:15:26

# And the soul felt its worth

0:15:260:15:32

# A thrill of hope

0:15:320:15:36

# A weary world rejoices

0:15:360:15:40

# For yonder breaks

0:15:400:15:44

# A new and glorious morn

0:15:440:15:48

# Fall on your knees

0:15:480:15:56

# Oh, hear the angel voices

0:15:570:16:03

# O night divine

0:16:040:16:12

# O night when Christ was born

0:16:120:16:19

# O night divine

0:16:190:16:27

# O night, O night divine

0:16:290:16:35

# Chains shall He break

0:16:410:16:44

# For the slave is our brother

0:16:440:16:49

# And in His name

0:16:490:16:52

# All oppression shall cease

0:16:520:16:56

# Sweet hymns of joy

0:16:580:17:02

# In grateful chorus raise we

0:17:020:17:06

# Let all within us

0:17:060:17:11

# Praise His holy name

0:17:110:17:18

-# Fall on your knees

-Fall on your knees

0:17:180:17:24

-# Oh, hear the angel voices

-Hear the angel voices

0:17:240:17:32

# O night divine

0:17:320:17:40

# O night, when Christ was born

0:17:400:17:47

# O night divine

0:17:480:17:56

# O night

0:17:560:18:00

# O night divine. #

0:18:000:18:08

Then Herod, when he had privily called the wise men,

0:18:220:18:26

enquired of them diligently what time the star appeared.

0:18:260:18:30

And he sent them to Bethlehem, and said,

0:18:310:18:33

"Go and search diligently for the young child, and when ye have

0:18:330:18:38

"found him, bring me word again, that I may come and worship him also."

0:18:380:18:43

When they had heard the king, they departed and, lo, the star,

0:18:440:18:49

which they saw in the east, went before them,

0:18:490:18:52

till it came and stood over where the young child was.

0:18:520:18:56

When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy.

0:18:560:19:00

And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child

0:19:010:19:05

with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him.

0:19:050:19:09

And when they had opened their treasures,

0:19:100:19:12

they presented unto him gifts, gold, and frankincense and myrrh.

0:19:120:19:17

And being warned of God in a dream that they should not return to Herod,

0:19:190:19:23

they departed into their own country another way.

0:19:230:19:28

# Come they told me Pa-rum-pum-pum-pum

0:23:110:23:17

# A new born King to see Pa-rum-pum-pum-pum

0:23:170:23:22

# Our finest gifts we bring Pa-rum-pum-pum-pum

0:23:230:23:29

# To lay before the King Pa-rum-pum-pum-pum

0:23:290:23:33

# Rum-pum-pum-pum rum-pum-pum-pum

0:23:330:23:37

# So to honour Him Pa-rum-pum-pum-pum

0:23:370:23:42

# When we come

0:23:420:23:46

# Pa-rum-pum-pum-pum

0:23:480:23:51

# Little Baby, pa-rum-pum-pum-pum

0:23:510:23:55

# I am a poor boy too Pa-rum-pum-pum-pum

0:23:550:24:01

# I have no gift to bring Pa-rum-pum-pum-pum

0:24:010:24:06

# That's fit to give the King Pa-rum-pum-pum-pum

0:24:060:24:12

# Rum-pum-pum-pum Rum-pum-pum-pum

0:24:120:24:14

# Shall I play for you Pa-rum-pum-pum-pum

0:24:150:24:21

# On my drum?

0:24:210:24:23

# Rum-pum-pum-pum On my drum?

0:24:230:24:31

# Rum-pum-pum-pum, rum-pum-pum-pum Pa-rum-pum-pum-pum

0:24:310:24:36

# Rum-pum-pum-pum, rum-pum-pum-pum Pa-rum-pum-pum-pum

0:24:360:24:41

# Rum-pum-pum-pum Rum-pum-pum-pum, rum-pum-pum-pum

0:24:410:24:44

# Rum-pum-pum-pum Rum-pum-pum-pum, rum-pum-pum-pum

0:24:440:24:47

# Rum-pum-pum-pum

0:24:490:24:52

# Rum pum pum

0:24:520:24:53

# Rum-pum-pum-pum Rum-pum-pum-pum, rum-pum-pum-pum

0:24:570:25:03

# Mary nodded, pa-rum-pum-pum-pum

0:25:120:25:17

# The ox and lamb kept time Pa-rum-pum-pum-pum

0:25:170:25:22

# I played my drum for Him Pa-rum-pum-pum-pum

0:25:220:25:28

# I played my best for Him Pa-rum-pum-pum-pum

0:25:280:25:33

# Rum-pum-pum-pum Rum-pum-pum-pum

0:25:330:25:37

# Then He smiled at me Pa-rum-pum-pum-pum

0:25:370:25:42

# Me and my drum

0:25:420:25:47

# Come they told me Pa-rum-pum-pum-pum

0:25:490:25:57

# Me and my drum. #

0:25:590:26:05

Now Katherine sings her own choice of carol.

0:26:130:26:16

It's Sleep Quietly, My Jesus.

0:26:160:26:18

# Sleep quietly My Jesus

0:26:310:26:36

# Now close your dear eyes

0:26:360:26:41

# Above you shine God's counting stars

0:26:410:26:45

# Like diamonds in the sky

0:26:450:26:51

# Beside your bed, a manger crude

0:26:510:26:55

# With cattle have fed

0:26:550:26:59

# Your mother stands in watchful pray

0:26:590:27:04

# And strokes your little head

0:27:040:27:08

# The shepherds leave their flocks and come

0:27:260:27:32

# They bring you my love

0:27:320:27:36

# While angels of our Father God

0:27:360:27:41

# Rejoice the song above

0:27:410:27:45

# From far away the wise men three

0:27:450:27:51

# Their treasures would bring

0:27:510:27:55

# The whole wide world before your knees

0:27:550:28:00

# My Jesus, little king

0:28:000:28:04

# Sleep quietly, my Jesus

0:28:080:28:13

# Now close your dear eyes

0:28:130:28:18

# Above you shine God's counting stars

0:28:180:28:23

# Like diamonds in the sky

0:28:230:28:27

# Beside your bed, a manger crude

0:28:270:28:32

# With cattle have fed

0:28:320:28:36

# Your mother stands in watchful pray

0:28:360:28:41

# And strokes your little head. #

0:28:410:28:46

As our candlelit celebration draws to a close,

0:29:030:29:06

the vicar of St Mark's Church leads us in a special Christmas prayer.

0:29:060:29:10

Almighty God, you make us glad

0:29:120:29:13

with the yearly remembrance of the birth of your son Jesus Christ.

0:29:130:29:17

Grant that as we joyfully receive Him as our Redeemer, we may with

0:29:180:29:22

sure confidence behold Him when he shall come to be our judge.

0:29:220:29:27

Who is alive and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit.

0:29:270:29:31

One God, now and for ever.

0:29:310:29:34

ALL: Amen.

0:29:340:29:36

May the joy of the angels, the eagerness of the shepherds,

0:29:360:29:40

the perseverance of the wise men, and the obedience of Joseph and Mary,

0:29:400:29:46

and the peace of the Christ child be yours this Christmas.

0:29:460:29:51

And the blessing of God Almighty,

0:29:510:29:52

the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit

0:29:520:29:55

be amongst you and remain with you always.

0:29:550:29:58

ALL: Amen.

0:29:580:30:00

I hope you enjoyed our candlelit carols,

0:30:010:30:04

everyone here sang brilliantly.

0:30:040:30:06

I hope you joined in with your special favourite.

0:30:060:30:09

We end with one of the best-loved Christmas carols of all.

0:30:090:30:13

In fact, Christmas wouldn't be the same without it.

0:30:130:30:16

It's Hark! The Herald-Angels Sing.

0:30:160:30:18

I wish you a joyful and peaceful Christmas. Bye for now.

0:30:180:30:23

Next week, Aled's at the Royal Albert Hall

0:33:240:33:26

for our Big Sing Spectacular celebrating 2012.

0:33:260:33:30

There'll be glorious hymns and very special guests, including

0:33:300:33:34
