This week I'm in Milton Keynes celebrating the 50th anniversary

0:00:030:00:07

of Britain's most famous new town, which is also home

0:00:070:00:10

to a Christian community with a pioneering past.

0:00:100:00:13

Welcome to Songs Of Praise.

0:00:130:00:16

On today's programme I'll be meeting the Christians at the heart

0:00:390:00:42

of the development of Milton Keynes.

0:00:420:00:45

Reverend Kate Bottley visits a Christian project which is restoring

0:00:460:00:50

broken bicycles whilst turning around young lives.

0:00:500:00:53

-Do you know what I think the best bit of the bike is, Ben?

-Which one?

0:00:530:00:58

HORN

0:00:580:01:01

And I have a kickabout with a local freestyle footballer

0:01:010:01:04

whose faith has inspired him to break a staggering

0:01:040:01:06

five world records.

0:01:060:01:09

As a Christian, I really believe that this was my God-given gift,

0:01:090:01:12

and it was something that he wanted me to do.

0:01:120:01:14

Founded in 1967, Milton Keynes was built to ease the pressure

0:01:220:01:27

of London's chronic housing shortage.

0:01:270:01:30

Created from Buckinghamshire farmland and surrounding villages,

0:01:300:01:34

this place has had a lot to celebrate over its past

0:01:340:01:37

five decades, being the proud home of the Aston Martin,

0:01:370:01:41

with some cars taking two years to make.

0:01:410:01:43

And it's the base of the legendary Marshall amplifier company.

0:01:440:01:48

Milton Keynes has also forged a close-knit Christian community,

0:01:490:01:52

and our first hymn comes from the Church of Christ the Cornerstone,

0:01:520:01:56

led by the multi-award-winning songwriter and music producer

0:01:560:02:00

Noel Robinson and his band.

0:02:000:02:02

APPLAUSE

0:04:270:04:30

Created 50 years ago in 1967, Milton Keynes has a track record

0:04:360:04:41

for innovation, being first in the country

0:04:410:04:44

to trial driverless vehicles.

0:04:440:04:46

When it was built, Centre: MK was the largest indoor shopping mall

0:04:480:04:51

in Europe - fitting for a place that from the very beginning

0:04:510:04:54

set its sights on a pioneering future.

0:04:540:04:57

New job, new home, new life in Milton Keynes.

0:04:590:05:04

Residents were served by a network of historic churches,

0:05:060:05:10

but in the following years, Milton Keynes would seek to develop

0:05:100:05:13

new ways of serving its Christian community.

0:05:130:05:16

When Milton Keynes was a twinkle in the planner's eye,

0:05:180:05:22

the Anglicans, the Baptists, the Methodists,

0:05:220:05:25

the Roman Catholics and the United Reformed Church,

0:05:250:05:28

they came to the decision that they would build churches together.

0:05:280:05:33

That's incredibly forward-thinking.

0:05:330:05:35

We've got Roman Catholics and Protestants coming together,

0:05:350:05:37

where in other parts of the country that certainly wasn't happening.

0:05:370:05:41

Well, I think that there was a great excitement,

0:05:410:05:44

a new excitement about this ecumenical movement.

0:05:440:05:48

It was a great adventure for everybody here,

0:05:480:05:51

and people felt that they were just on the cusp of building

0:05:510:05:54

something really new and being able to contribute as Christians together

0:05:540:05:59

into the building of a new city.

0:05:590:06:02

Milton Keynes' ecumenical movement needed a focal point.

0:06:040:06:08

Work began to build a space in the town centre where everyone could

0:06:090:06:12

worship together. The result was the Church of Christ the Cornerstone.

0:06:120:06:18

Officially opened in 1992, it became the UK's first purpose-built

0:06:190:06:24

ecumenical church, serving five denominations under one roof.

0:06:240:06:29

That same year, Her Majesty the Queen attended a special

0:06:290:06:32

dedication ceremony to celebrate and bless this new building.

0:06:320:06:36

Cheryl Montgomery was in the choir on the big day.

0:06:370:06:41

The morning, we were all inside the church already

0:06:410:06:44

for the Queen to arrive.

0:06:440:06:46

And it was such a big occasion for Milton Keynes.

0:06:460:06:50

So the heads of the churches were there, and it was just like saying,

0:06:500:06:55

"Right, Milton Keynes, you are really important today."

0:06:550:06:58

And the first notes of the music started.

0:07:030:07:07

That was it, and off we went.

0:07:070:07:10

That's my daughter...

0:07:100:07:13

..and that's me.

0:07:130:07:14

It was really a special occasion.

0:07:170:07:19

For the last 50 years, 25 years,

0:07:210:07:24

you are absolutely welcome.

0:07:240:07:26

A quarter of a century later,

0:07:260:07:28

and Cheryl is still singing with the Cornerstone Choir.

0:07:280:07:32

We were always looking ahead

0:07:380:07:41

and looking forward to being in a special place to be that

0:07:410:07:45

special group of people who promised to work together.

0:07:450:07:49

# Brother, sister Let me serve you... #

0:07:520:07:57

Look at this.

0:09:280:09:29

Freestyle football takes years of practice

0:09:300:09:33

and has become a global phenomenon.

0:09:330:09:35

-Really impressive.

-Thanks, man.

0:09:360:09:38

Christian Daniel Cutting is one of the world's leading experts,

0:09:380:09:41

and hails from right here in Milton Keynes.

0:09:410:09:44

How long have you been doing freestyling for?

0:09:440:09:47

-It's been my full-time job for about eight years...

-Yeah.

0:09:470:09:49

..and I've been practising for probably nearer to 20 years.

0:09:490:09:52

-So since you were a little kid?

-Yeah.

0:09:520:09:54

You have must have some records.

0:09:540:09:56

I have got a couple of world records, yeah.

0:09:560:09:58

Various different freestyle skills that you can do.

0:09:580:10:00

Once I'd learned to kind of juggle the ball and do all the easy stuff,

0:10:000:10:03

-the stuff you learnt when you were young...

-I didn't even learn that!

0:10:030:10:06

-..I learned to kind of balance the ball on my head like this.

-Yeah.

0:10:060:10:09

And then once I'd learnt to get it there, I learnt to tilt

0:10:090:10:12

-my head to the side and balance it in my temple.

-Yeah.

0:10:120:10:14

And then you roll it over and catch it. Roll it back.

0:10:140:10:16

And basically over and back counts as a face roll,

0:10:160:10:19

and I did 1,810 in a row.

0:10:190:10:22

Wow, your neck must have been really aching after that!

0:10:220:10:25

I didn't have anything to do for a spare hour that day,

0:10:250:10:27

so I thought, why not go for it?

0:10:270:10:29

At what stage do you get to that and think,

0:10:290:10:31

"I'm just going to roll the ball on the top of my head"?

0:10:310:10:33

No, it's really hard.

0:10:330:10:35

Even balancing it there is difficult enough,

0:10:350:10:38

and then it's that balance and trying to get it there, but then

0:10:380:10:40

for ages I was up to here again, and then back to this side and then up.

0:10:400:10:44

But it's trying to make it smooth, and make it look flawless.

0:10:440:10:47

-Like rolling it around your head.

-That's really impressive.

0:10:470:10:50

Daniel holds a total of five world records,

0:10:520:10:55

but didn't consider becoming a professional freestyler

0:10:550:10:59

until he graduated in sport and PE from university,

0:10:590:11:03

choosing a career in football over teaching.

0:11:030:11:06

I just decided... Even from a young age

0:11:080:11:10

I knew I had this gift and this ability to play football,

0:11:100:11:13

and that wasn't even the tricks and skills.

0:11:130:11:15

As a Christian, you know, I really believe

0:11:150:11:17

that this was my God-given gift,

0:11:170:11:19

and it was something that he wanted me to do.

0:11:190:11:22

I can't say I ever had the voice of God saying,

0:11:220:11:24

"Daniel, you will be a freestyler,"

0:11:240:11:25

but I just had that sense in my spirit,

0:11:250:11:27

and when I prayed through it with Mum and Dad and other friends

0:11:270:11:30

and family, I just thought, you know, I'd be silly not to try this

0:11:300:11:33

and to really go for something that I'm so passionate about.

0:11:330:11:36

You've been a body double, as well, haven't you,

0:11:360:11:38

for some famous footballers?

0:11:380:11:39

I've done loads of body doubling over the years.

0:11:390:11:41

It's always good to be in the adverts. My mum would prefer

0:11:410:11:44

that my face was in them - she always says that.

0:11:440:11:46

If you've got to body double for the pros and make them look good,

0:11:460:11:48

I'm happy to do it. Even David Beckham, I've done things where it

0:11:480:11:51

looks like he's doing the trick with

0:11:510:11:52

-his feet, but it's actually me doing it.

-That's incredible.

0:11:520:11:55

David Beckham must have amazing skills, but yours are even better?

0:11:550:11:58

Yeah, I am better than David Beckham at football skills, yeah, for sure.

0:11:580:12:02

He's very good at football, obviously, but I'm better at skills.

0:12:020:12:05

CHEERING

0:12:060:12:08

Daniel now has one million followers on social media

0:12:100:12:13

and travels the world showcasing his extraordinary talents.

0:12:130:12:17

So I think people always think of God-given skills

0:12:180:12:21

and abilities as the gift of leadership,

0:12:210:12:24

or the gift of discernment, or the gift of encouragement.

0:12:240:12:27

But God has given us so many different gifts, you know,

0:12:270:12:30

physical gifts that you can actually use.

0:12:300:12:32

He's given you the gift of tricks of football.

0:12:320:12:34

-He's given me the gift of freestyle.

-Not me.

-Well, you're OK.

0:12:340:12:37

You weren't too bad.

0:12:370:12:38

-Yes!

-Ooh!

-Wow.

0:12:380:12:42

Maybe a few more years' practice.

0:12:420:12:43

But that's the amazing thing, isn't it?

0:12:430:12:45

He's given me this gift and ability, and I really believe that.

0:12:450:12:48

But it was still, you know, hours and hours of practice every day.

0:12:480:12:52

Just because I had that God-given ability and skill,

0:12:520:12:55

it didn't mean that I just woke up one day and went,

0:12:550:12:57

"Whoa! Mum, look what I can do! I went to bed, woke up

0:12:570:13:00

"and the ball was spinning on my finger."

0:13:000:13:02

It was the hours of practice and the discipline, the perseverance

0:13:020:13:05

which God's given me in order to actually get to this level.

0:13:050:13:08

# Everybody do the...

0:13:110:13:12

0:13:140:13:16

0:14:240:14:26

0:14:290:14:30

-ALL:

-Freedom!

0:14:300:14:33

# Say...

0:14:330:14:35

# Everybody say

0:14:560:14:58

# Everybody say... #

0:15:070:15:09

Freedom, yeah!

0:15:270:15:29

Milton Keynes may be a relatively young town,

0:15:350:15:38

but its Christian origins date back centuries.

0:15:380:15:42

The Reverend John Newton moved to the village of Olney

0:15:420:15:44

in what is now the borough of Milton Keynes in 1746.

0:15:440:15:49

The religious writings of the former slave trader-turned-abolitionist

0:15:490:15:52

would become world-famous,

0:15:520:15:54

seeing his words turned into the lyrics of many loved hymns,

0:15:540:15:58

including, of course, Amazing Grace.

0:15:580:16:01

# Amazing Grace... #

0:16:050:16:08

Noel Robinson is not your ordinary worship leader.

0:19:120:19:15

Launching his studio recording career back in 1996,

0:19:160:19:20

Noel has managed successfully to work in both the Christian

0:19:200:19:23

and secular music worlds. And as well as winning awards,

0:19:230:19:26

he's also toured with the likes of Gloria Gaynor and Chaka Khan.

0:19:260:19:29

# Outrageous love You poor outrageous love on me... #

0:19:290:19:37

So tell me about your love of music. Tell me about your inspirations.

0:19:370:19:42

My dad, he loved music. He played guitar.

0:19:420:19:45

And my mum played piano but she died when I was five.

0:19:450:19:48

It would be me and my dad in the room,

0:19:500:19:53

and he'd be playing his guitar, so I'd sit there watching him,

0:19:530:19:55

and, you know, I think it was the thing that kept me quiet.

0:19:550:19:58

And I'm just interested in how you write songs.

0:19:580:20:01

I'm quite spontaneous, so it's quite possible for me to sit here

0:20:010:20:04

and just create a song in a few seconds, in a few minutes.

0:20:040:20:08

You know, I can do something...

0:20:080:20:10

# Here I am, sitting down with you... #

0:20:100:20:15

Can we call this Kate's Song?

0:20:150:20:17

# Kate's song, singing

0:20:170:20:19

# Kate's song, singing

0:20:190:20:23

# Great songs With Kate

0:20:230:20:27

# Songs... #

0:20:270:20:29

-KATE LAUGHS

-You know?

0:20:290:20:30

# Freedom, yes... #

0:20:300:20:33

Noel has been nominated four times for Mobo awards,

0:20:330:20:36

and has worked with giants of the music industry.

0:20:360:20:39

But his Christian faith led him

0:20:390:20:40

to question pursuing a mainstream career.

0:20:400:20:43

You had some pretty tough choices to make, didn't you,

0:20:450:20:49

about what to chase after? Because you're really good...

0:20:490:20:54

..and it could have been a whole different story for you.

0:20:550:20:58

Very early on I recognised something that God was doing to me, and

0:20:580:21:04

it was the choice to chase the music or the choice to chase the calling.

0:21:040:21:09

You know, the Scripture in Romans 11, that says the gift and the call

0:21:090:21:13

of God are without repentance, there's two things at stake here.

0:21:130:21:16

If I chase the music, what I'm doing technically is chasing

0:21:160:21:20

a dream of just playing with no content, often times.

0:21:200:21:24

But if I chase the calling, it doesn't stop me from playing,

0:21:240:21:27

but actually I find the content to play.

0:21:270:21:29

And it's this content that shapes people.

0:21:290:21:32

Music is beautiful in itself,

0:21:320:21:34

it's the most amazing gift that God ever gave us.

0:21:340:21:36

I say to people, there's only two gifts that came out of Heaven,

0:21:360:21:39

and that's Jesus and music.

0:21:390:21:41

-Any regrets?

-No.

0:21:410:21:44

I've not lost out in playing in venues.

0:21:440:21:46

I've not lost out in meeting amazing people in the Christian world.

0:21:460:21:50

I've played for some of the major Christian artists

0:21:500:21:53

around the world, you know?

0:21:530:21:55

I've got to know them as friends and toured the world,

0:21:550:21:59

all because I followed my call.

0:21:590:22:02

And I'm still doing it.

0:22:020:22:03

If I can give hope to someone who's lost hope and get them to believe

0:22:030:22:08

once again, even in themselves, then I feel that I'm achieving.

0:22:080:22:14

The gift is measured by how good you are, how many hours

0:22:140:22:17

you put to practise.

0:22:170:22:19

But the call is discovered and you walk it by faith.

0:22:190:22:23

That is the most exciting thing, wow, to walk my faith.

0:22:230:22:27

With 170 miles of cycle lanes,

0:25:150:25:17

Milton Keynes is certainly bike-friendly.

0:25:170:25:20

This is my first time riding a bike since I was 15 years old,

0:25:230:25:27

and a local Christian initiative is trying to persuade people like me

0:25:270:25:31

to ditch four wheels in favour of two.

0:25:310:25:34

Here we go... Whoa!

0:25:340:25:36

Cycle Saviours is a church-backed project breathing new life

0:25:380:25:42

into neglected bikes.

0:25:420:25:44

It rose out of the fact that we recognise that about a million bikes

0:25:440:25:47

were being thrown out nationally a year, and cycling is a really

0:25:470:25:50

healthy thing, so we thought it would be really great.

0:25:500:25:53

And where does faith fit into this?

0:25:530:25:54

For me, this is part of expressing what I believe is God's concern

0:25:540:25:58

for our communities and neighbourhoods,

0:25:580:26:00

and it's really nice to be able to show

0:26:000:26:02

that we're concerned about a whole range of things.

0:26:020:26:05

Would you like this?

0:26:050:26:06

-VOICEOVER:

-Locals donate their old bikes...

0:26:060:26:08

Look at that, look at that!

0:26:080:26:10

..so they can be put to good use.

0:26:100:26:12

-This has got cobwebs on the back wheel.

-They're free.

0:26:120:26:15

You don't have to charge for those. Or the bell.

0:26:150:26:18

-How long has that been in your shed?

-Two years.

-Two years?

-Yes.

0:26:180:26:22

But there's more to this Christian initiative than just getting

0:26:240:26:27

old bikes back on the road.

0:26:270:26:29

This workshop is staffed by young trainees.

0:26:290:26:33

Ben's 19 years old and struggled at school,

0:26:330:26:36

but since coming here he's been able to develop his practical skills.

0:26:360:26:41

What's the best thing about working here?

0:26:410:26:43

It makes me happy and talk to people.

0:26:430:26:48

And, yeah, have fun.

0:26:480:26:52

And then just test the gears and brakes to see if it's all fine.

Jack is 15 and admits to having behavioural issues.

0:26:550:26:59

He's released from school to visit the project twice a week.

0:26:590:27:03

What do you think it would have been like if you hadn't been able to come

0:27:030:27:06

here two days a week and you'd had to stay in school full-time?

0:27:060:27:09

I'd probably be kicked out right now.

0:27:090:27:11

-So this has sort of saved you, hasn't it?

-Yeah.

0:27:110:27:14

It's helped me a lot.

0:27:140:27:16

-You've saved the bikes, and the bikes have saved you.

-Yeah.

0:27:160:27:20

-Do you know what I think the best bit of the bike is, Ben?

-Which one?

0:27:220:27:24

This bit.

0:27:240:27:26

HORN

0:27:260:27:28

I like that bit!

0:27:280:27:29

Cycle Saviours also maintain bikes for community groups

0:27:320:27:36

like BucksVision. The charity for the visually impaired helped Elaine

0:27:360:27:40

after she lost much of her sight five years ago.

0:27:400:27:44

The day that I had to sell my bike,

0:27:440:27:46

I'll admit I was actually in tears, cos it was like...

0:27:460:27:50

I felt that my legs had been cut off

0:27:500:27:52

because I couldn't get out there and enjoy the outdoors.

0:27:520:27:56

But with the help of Cycle Saviours

0:27:570:27:59

and co-rider Marcel, Elaine's back on the road doing what she loves.

0:27:590:28:04

The first time I got on a tandem, it almost felt like I'd got

0:28:040:28:08

something back that I'd lost, because I could hear the birds,

0:28:080:28:12

I could hear, you know, the wind and everything.

0:28:120:28:16

And for me it was like being back in the Lord's creation again.

Next week, in a special programme for remembrance,

0:31:020:31:05

Claire McCollum is in Enniskillen where, 30 years ago,

0:31:050:31:08

an IRA bomb exploded during a Remembrance Day ceremony.

0:31:080:31:12

Our final piece of music is a wonderful hymn of thanks

0:31:150:31:18

to lift the spirit and warm the heart.

0:31:180:31:21

Until next time, goodbye.

0:31:210:31:22

Sing it out, church!
