Good evening and welcome

0:00:330:00:35

to the glorious Schonbrunn Palace in Vienna

0:00:350:00:38

on a warm, cloudy evening

0:00:380:00:39

for the summer concert of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra.

0:00:390:00:43

Schonbrunn is the great monument in the rococo style,

0:00:430:00:47

created by the Habsburg monarchs

0:00:470:00:49

who built and developed this site over successive generations.

0:00:490:00:53

The concert will be conducted by Valery Gergiev

0:00:530:00:55

from the Mariinsky Theatre in St Petersburg

0:00:550:00:57

and there will be contributions from the violinist Benjamin Schmid

0:00:570:01:01

and the Vienna State Opera Ballet.

0:01:010:01:03

The theme tonight is virtuoso paintings,

0:01:050:01:07

and there will certainly be virtuosity in abundance.

0:01:070:01:10

In the concert, there will be music from Sibelius, Paganini

0:01:100:01:14

and Mussorgsky, but we start with Les Preludes by Franz Liszt,

0:01:140:01:18

who was not only a virtuoso pianist

0:01:180:01:20

but a highly-accomplished composer for orchestra as well as the piano.

0:01:200:01:24

So, here is Valery Gergiev to conduct

0:01:240:01:27

the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra in Les Preludes by Franz Liszt.

0:01:270:01:32

APPLAUSE

0:16:290:16:31

Les Preludes by Franz Lizst,

0:16:340:16:36

with Valery Gergiev conducting the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra

0:16:360:16:40

in the grounds of the Schonbrunn Palace in Vienna.

0:16:400:16:42

As we've been seeing,

0:16:440:16:45

the gardens at Schonbrunn are exceptionally beautiful.

0:16:450:16:48

They're ringed by 32 statues representing various deities,

0:16:480:16:52

including the Neptune Well and the Sun Fountain.

0:16:520:16:55

But next up, we have Austrian home-grown virtuosic talent

0:16:550:16:58

in violinist Benjamin Schmid.

0:16:580:17:00

He's going to play the first movement

0:17:000:17:02

of the Violin Concerto No.1 by Paganini.

0:17:020:17:05

Paganini was a sensation in early-19th-century Europe,

0:17:050:17:08

and his music is still regarded

0:17:080:17:10

as some of the most technically difficult to play for any violinist.

0:17:100:17:14

APPLAUSE

0:17:140:17:15

Here he is, Benjamin Schmid, with conductor Valery Gergiev,

0:17:150:17:19

to play the first movement of Paganini's Violin Concerto No. 1

0:17:190:17:22

in an arrangement by Fritz Kreisler.

0:17:220:17:25

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:34:520:34:54

The first movement of Paganini's Violin Concerto No. 1

0:34:580:35:01

in an arrangement by Fritz Kreisler, played with great panache

0:35:010:35:06

by Austrian violinist Benjamin Schmid.

0:35:060:35:08

He was accompanied by the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra,

0:35:080:35:12

conducted by Valery Gergiev.

0:35:120:35:15

APPLAUSE CONTINUES

0:35:150:35:17

The reputation of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra

0:35:190:35:23

is worldwide and the players have many friends in Japan.

0:35:230:35:26

Following the natural disaster there this year,

0:35:260:35:29

this next piece is a tribute to the people of Japan.

0:35:290:35:31

They're going to play Scenes With Cranes by Jean Sibelius,

0:35:310:35:35

the crane being a symbol of good luck and of long life in Japanese culture.

0:35:350:35:40

After that will be Pictures At An Exhibition

0:35:400:35:42

by Russian composer Modest Mussorgsky,

0:35:420:35:45

orchestrated by Ravel,

0:35:450:35:46

and dancers from the Vienna State Opera Ballet

0:35:460:35:48

will bring the music to life in front of the Gloriette,

0:35:480:35:51

overlooking the palace of Schonbrunn.

0:35:510:35:54

So here is Valery Gergiev to conduct Scenes With Cranes by Sibelius.

0:35:540:35:59

Pictures At An Exhibition by Modest Mussorgsky,

1:14:431:14:48

finishing with the imposing music for The Great Gate Of Kiev.

1:14:481:14:51

The dancers were members of the Vienna State Opera Ballet,

1:14:511:14:54

with choreography by Gregor Hatala,

1:14:541:14:57

who has been a soloist in the ballet company for 15 years.

1:14:571:15:01

Valery Gergiev conducting the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra

1:15:011:15:04

in the grounds of the Schonbrunn Palace in Vienna.

1:15:041:15:07

The leader of the orchestra is Rainer Kuchl,

1:15:111:15:14

who many of you might recognise from our regular transmission

1:15:141:15:17

of the Vienna Philharmonic's New Year's Day Concert.

1:15:171:15:20

Gergiev bringing various players to their feet

1:15:201:15:23

for their solo contributions.

1:15:231:15:25

But now, in the final sequence of tonight's concert,

1:15:301:15:33

the orchestra will first play an audience favourite,

1:15:331:15:37

Wiener Blut - Vienna Blood, or, loosely translated,

1:15:371:15:40

The Spirit Of Vienna, by Johann Strauss.

1:15:401:15:42

APPLAUSE

1:23:591:24:02

Valery Gergiev conducting the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra

1:24:021:24:06

in Wiener Blut, The Spirit Of Vienna by Johann Strauss.

1:24:061:24:10

And, waltzing their way through that,

1:24:121:24:14

the dancers of the Vienna State Opera Ballet.

1:24:141:24:17

I should think the orchestra knows pretty much every note

1:24:181:24:21

of that piece by heart, it's almost the Viennese anthem.

1:24:211:24:24

Finally, a piece that will send everyone home

1:24:261:24:29

with a spring in their step -

1:24:291:24:31

a sparkling polka, once again by Johann Strauss.

1:24:311:24:33

This is On The Banks Of The Danube.

1:24:331:24:36

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

1:27:061:27:09

And so, on a brilliant and lively note, with fireworks to match,

1:27:101:27:14

Strauss's polka On The Banks Of The Danube

1:27:141:27:17

brings to an end this summer evening concert

1:27:171:27:19

from the palace of Schonbrunn in Vienna.

1:27:191:27:23

The concert was played by the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra,

1:27:231:27:26

the leader was Rainer Kuchl, the conductor Valery Gergiev,

1:27:261:27:30

who clearly has a very warm relationship with this orchestra.

1:27:301:27:33

Well, it has been a great evening.

1:27:371:27:39

The rainy weather has held off

1:27:391:27:40

and the grounds of the Schonbrunn Palace have looked stunning.

1:27:401:27:44

From everyone in Vienna

1:27:461:27:47

and from me, Katie Derham, goodbye.
