Now then, where could I find a place with great bands, iconic venues and | :00:07. | :00:15.
brilliant live performances? Oh, yes, I know, Glasgow for the 2017 | :00:16. | :00:32.
6Music Festival. On tonight's show we will be bringing you highlights | :00:33. | :00:38.
of the festival with performances from Sparks, The Jesus And Mary | :00:39. | :00:55.
Chain, War paint and gold frappe. The 6Music Festival has been taking | :00:56. | :00:58.
place at venues across the city over the weekend and thousands of people | :00:59. | :01:03.
have turned out for what is a really brilliant line-up and we will bring | :01:04. | :01:07.
you great performances from the O2 Academy and also from Barrowlands. | :01:08. | :01:16.
Glasgow has been declared a UNESCO city of music. I did not think you | :01:17. | :01:21.
could be such a thing, but Glasgow is one. Before the music, here is a | :01:22. | :01:28.
reminder of Glasgow's great music heritage. On average there is a | :01:29. | :01:33.
staggering 130 separate gigs on a typical week in Glasgow and whatever | :01:34. | :01:38.
you taste, you can take your pick from hip-hop to float, or from | :01:39. | :01:43.
classical to Indy. But pop has played a large part in Glasgow's | :01:44. | :01:48.
music story. It was the birthplace of Lonnie Donegan who notched a | :01:49. | :01:52.
whopping 17 top ten hits in the UK and was the first British male | :01:53. | :02:03.
singer with two US top ten records. Lonnie Donegan left Glasgow as a | :02:04. | :02:08.
youngster, but in the 60s the city's home-grown talent included Lulu and | :02:09. | :02:15.
the raw blues of Alex Harvey who in the 70s went on to be a sensation. | :02:16. | :02:22.
The 80s was a boom time for Glasgow music, thanks partly to an indie | :02:23. | :02:27.
label set up in one of Glasgow's distinctive tenement flats. Postcard | :02:28. | :02:40.
Records. Tagging itself the sound of Young Scotland, it was at the | :02:41. | :02:44.
forefront of the British indie music scene and grab the attention of the | :02:45. | :02:48.
London based music industry, so it was not lobby for their groups were | :02:49. | :02:57.
appearing on Top of the Pops. Bands like Altered Images, that Bluebells | :02:58. | :03:06.
and Love And Money to name just a few. Glasgow bands were becoming | :03:07. | :03:13.
critically and commercially successful. In 1985 the Jesus And | :03:14. | :03:24.
Mary Chain forced UK to the front of the punk scene. By the end of the | :03:25. | :03:32.
decade Texas were becoming a household name and Deacon Blue were | :03:33. | :03:41.
top of the household charts. When the city became the European capital | :03:42. | :03:47.
of culture in 1990 it was not long before Primal Scream were picking up | :03:48. | :03:53.
the first ever Mercury music prize. Wet White Wet broke all records in | :03:54. | :04:00.
1994 with that song and it was not one, but three Glasgow bands that | :04:01. | :04:06.
Kurt Cobain name checked some his favourites. But the city was not | :04:07. | :04:16.
just producing great musicians. It had always been an unmissable stop | :04:17. | :04:25.
on tour. Way before Oasis, there were a number of venues in Glasgow | :04:26. | :04:29.
that attracted the biggest names in music. In the late 60s Pink Floyd | :04:30. | :04:37.
and Jimi Hendrix strutted on its stages and when the Apollo opened in | :04:38. | :04:41.
1963 it attracted everyone from Aber to the clash. Musicians found the | :04:42. | :04:51.
Apollo's atmosphere electrifying. AC/DC recorded their first live | :04:52. | :04:54.
album there and David Bowie said it was one of his favourite places. You | :04:55. | :05:01.
would agree with most artists who say the Glasgow audience is one of | :05:02. | :05:05.
the best you can get. It is exceptional. Why is it? They seem | :05:06. | :05:11.
intoxicated with the idea of a theatrical show. And it is one venue | :05:12. | :05:17.
that still intoxicated every musician, the Barrowlands. The | :05:18. | :05:22.
original building was opened in 1934 by Maggie McKeever and now it has | :05:23. | :05:30.
reached iconic music venue status. It evolved with music tastes over | :05:31. | :05:33.
the years from a date night dance hall in the 50s to a raucous, | :05:34. | :05:38.
unmissable tour dates for the great and the good. It has been name | :05:39. | :05:42.
checked as one of the best places in the world to play. It is only unique | :05:43. | :05:47.
venue which has become a rite of passage for every bad. For when the | :05:48. | :05:55.
likes of Dell and Sebastien and Travis all stepped onto its hallowed | :05:56. | :06:04.
stage, they knew they had made it. Where better than to pick of this | :06:05. | :06:09.
year's Festival and at the Barrowlands with Glasgow's own The | :06:10. | :06:14.
Jesus And Mary Chain. # And the world comes tumbling down. | :06:15. | :06:32.
# Played a hand in a pilot light And it's hard | :06:33. | :06:49.
For me to say. I'm going down To be | :06:50. | :07:01.
by myself I'm going back And if you walk away | :07:02. | :07:09.
I can't take it. # Listened to the girl as she takes | :07:10. | :08:01.
on half the world. # You come along, you come along | :08:02. | :10:29.
And wash away the rain Because of you, | :10:30. | :13:39.
I know where I belong. You're a new song, | :13:40. | :13:55.
You're a new song, baby. To think, to think that it was | :13:56. | :13:57.
wrong for me I want. I want, I want, I want | :13:58. | :14:33.
it all so sweet. You got the moves, | :14:34. | :14:41.
you got the moves. You got the moves, | :14:42. | :14:44.
you got the moves. Dancing to you all night long | :14:45. | :14:56.
(you're a new song, baby). Dancing to you all night long | :14:57. | :16:13.
(you're a new song, baby). # That is the way we want it. | :16:14. | :16:26.
# The way we want. More than a year landed out | :16:27. | :18:39.
here on a big box store roof. Tropical smells and back to school | :18:40. | :19:00.
sales, why would we ever move? Damned if we do, dumb if we don't | :19:01. | :19:05.
end up again back home. Watching the sea plays | :19:06. | :19:13.
in HD, locked is the way. Uh, no I don't believe him Uh, | :19:14. | :19:18.
but know that I've been grieving Know that I've been holding out | :19:19. | :22:43.
Hoping to receive him I've been holding out for G | :22:44. | :22:45.
when he was nowhere to be seen when I was bleeding, cousin | :22:46. | :22:48.
with the choking and the wheezing But still he dream of smoking | :22:49. | :22:51.
potent in the evening This is only for the heathens Hold | :22:52. | :22:53.
until the souls who need Still ain't folded | :22:54. | :22:59.
when it's freezing I wonder why my dad didn't | :23:00. | :23:06.
want me, ex didn't need me Half of them left and | :23:07. | :23:47.
the rest finna breeze me It's blessed till I second guess, | :23:48. | :23:49.
rest till it freeze me There's nothing to | :23:50. | :23:52.
believe in, believe me The Lord will make a way | :23:53. | :23:54.
And when I get in trouble Little bit of life after | :23:55. | :24:11.
death Scatter my ashes when it's my time to | :24:12. | :24:14.
rest With the lines I'm obsessed, rhymes I possess Can't | :24:15. | :24:17.
deny, seen the biggest guys cry to confess in a breath Fresh | :24:18. | :24:19.
death passing the chest, unimpressed with the sess Left scars | :24:20. | :24:22.
in the flesh, he's the best, worst-kept sparring in jest | :24:23. | :24:25.
Saying, "Star never bar too far from the nest" | :24:26. | :24:28.
So I never left and never thought about doing | :24:29. | :24:32.
so I to-and-fro from that | :24:33. | :24:34.
prime time to a home You see, I'm doing those | :24:35. | :24:36.
nights I should've known Whatever, still my breddas say | :24:37. | :24:39.
I'm too involved. But who would know what | :24:40. | :24:45.
the family first is? Till you dream, see | :24:46. | :24:48.
three family hearses Worst is, wanted me | :24:49. | :24:49.
to speak at the service So I penned a couple bars, | :24:50. | :24:52.
didn't need to rehearse this And when I get in trouble, | :24:53. | :24:54.
the Lord will make a way And whenever I need him, | :24:55. | :25:07.
the Lord will make a way. How are you lot doing now? | :25:08. | :25:26.
A great performance at Barrowlands last night. He was on the BBC Sound | :25:27. | :25:32.
of list in 2016. So much amazing stuff going on here at the 6Music | :25:33. | :25:38.
Festival across the weekend, so your best bet is to check it out at the | :25:39. | :25:44.
website. But we have still got loads of great music here tonight, | :25:45. | :25:52.
including performances from Sparks, Feature Islands, and gold frappe. | :25:53. | :26:02.
But first, headlining here from Albuquerque, the shins. | :26:03. | :26:25.
I think I'll go home and mull this over | :26:26. | :26:28.
Before I cram it down my throat At long last it's | :26:29. | :26:30.
crashed, the colossal mass Has broken up into bits in my moat. | :26:31. | :26:33.
Lift the mattress off the floor Walk the cramps off | :26:34. | :26:38.
Go meander in the cold Hail to your dark skin | :26:39. | :26:46.
Underneath the power lines seeking shade. | :26:47. | :27:00.
Far above our heads are the icy heights | :27:01. | :27:06.
that contain all reason It's a luscious mix of words and tricks | :27:07. | :27:37.
All these squawking birds won't quit. | :27:38. | :27:41.
Hold your glass up, hold it in Never betray the way | :27:42. | :28:19.
One day I'll be wondering how I got so old just wondering how | :28:20. | :28:26.
I never got cold wearing nothing in the snow. | :28:27. | :28:32.
This is way beyond my remote concern Of being condescending | :28:33. | :28:37.
All these squawking birds won't quit. | :28:38. | :28:45.
Gold teeth and a curse for this town Were all in my mouth | :28:46. | :30:15.
Only, I don't know how they got out, dear | :30:16. | :30:20.
Turn me back into the pet I was when we met | :30:21. | :30:27.
And if you'd took to me like a gull takes to the wind | :30:28. | :30:42.
And I'd a-danced like the king of the eyesores | :30:43. | :30:51.
And the rest of our lives would have fared well | :30:52. | :30:56.
New slang when you notice the stripes | :30:57. | :30:59.
Hope it's right when you die, old and bony | :31:00. | :31:09.
Dawn breaks like a bull through the hall | :31:10. | :31:13.
But my head's to the wall and I'm lonely | :31:14. | :31:22.
And if you'd took to me like a gull takes to the wind | :31:23. | :31:29.
And I'd a-danced like the kind of the eyesores | :31:30. | :31:38.
And the rest of our lives would have fared well. | :31:39. | :32:02.
And bleed into their buns till they melt away | :32:03. | :32:16.
I'm looking in on the good life I might be doomed never to find | :32:17. | :32:25.
Without a trust or flaming fields, am I too dumb to refine? | :32:26. | :32:34.
I'da danced like the queen of the eyesores | :32:35. | :32:42.
And the rest of our lives would'a fared well. | :32:43. | :33:27.
Thirsty for your smile I watch you for a while | :33:28. | :34:14.
You are a vapour trail In a deep blue sky | :34:15. | :34:36.
Tremble with a sigh Glitter in your eye | :34:37. | :34:45.
You seem to come and go, I never seem to know | :34:46. | :34:55.
And all my time is yours as much as mine | :34:56. | :35:04.
We never have enough time to show our love. | :35:05. | :35:29.
Care to be clean Purge to be free You spilled my blood | :35:30. | :39:17.
There's poison in them Drunken pretense | :39:18. | :39:24.
I knew all along You would go to be wrong | :39:25. | :39:32.
Thought I'd go up in flames, is that alright? | :39:33. | :39:37.
Strike the match and set me alight You can watch my fire burn bright | :39:38. | :39:41.
'Cause babes never die, babes never die | :39:42. | :39:45.
Keep it for another who died I'm not going to be cut this time | :39:46. | :39:49.
When I go I'll be the one who decides | :39:50. | :39:52.
'Cause babes never die, babes never die | :39:53. | :39:57.
Watch if I float, damned if I don't Watch if I float, damned if I don't | :39:58. | :40:19.
Thought I'd go up in flames, is that alright? | :40:20. | :40:23.
Strike the match and set me alight You can watch my fire burn bright | :40:24. | :40:27.
'Cause babes never die, babes never die | :40:28. | :40:33.
Keep it for another who died I'm not going to be cut this time | :40:34. | :40:37.
When I go I'll be the one who decides | :40:38. | :40:39.
'Cause babes never die, babes never die | :40:40. | :41:01.
All this time I was waiting for you to go and tell me | :41:02. | :41:09.
Go and tell me all the things that I've done wrong | :41:10. | :41:40.
Babes never die! Babes never die! | :41:41. | :42:40.
# Nobody move, there's blood on the floor | :42:41. | :42:43.
# So please give it back, cos it's not yours to take! | :42:44. | :42:59.
# It must've fell when I lost my mind | :43:00. | :43:04.
# Deep in the cut, drowning it in pain | :43:05. | :43:10.
# Somebody help, cos I can't find my way | :43:11. | :43:16.
# Somebody tell me how I'm supposed to feel | :43:17. | :43:48.
# When I'm sitting here knowing this ain't real | :43:49. | :43:54.
# Why in the world would I give my heart to you? | :43:55. | :43:58.
# Just to watch you throw it in the trash? | :43:59. | :44:04.
# I've been traveling so long, I don't think I can hold on | :44:05. | :44:09.
# Where were you when I needed you the most? | :44:10. | :44:15.
# Now I'm sitting here with a black hole in my chest | :44:16. | :44:21.
# So please give it back, cos it's not yours to take! | :44:22. | :45:49.
# It must've fell when I lost my mind | :45:50. | :45:54.
# Deep in the cut, drowning it in pain | :45:55. | :46:00.
# Somebody help, cos I can't find my way | :46:01. | :46:05.
This next song is for you young ones out there. | :46:06. | :46:49.
It is going to be OK. And you can clean around | :46:50. | :47:10.
the wound if you want to It just takes time and | :47:11. | :47:15.
you can go to the moon But if you want something to change, | :47:16. | :47:25.
you gotta change your life And take your time, | :47:26. | :47:31.
it just takes time It just takes time | :47:32. | :47:42.
It just takes time And leave you to the night, | :47:43. | :47:57.
and that's alright Because before the moonbeam comes, | :47:58. | :48:10.
there's a certain calm And then there's light, | :48:11. | :48:20.
it just takes time It just takes time, | :48:21. | :48:27.
a little trust and your time You can change your life, | :48:28. | :48:33.
it just takes time And I can sit and talk, | :48:34. | :48:42.
because I was just like you So arrogant and brave, | :48:43. | :48:53.
impetuous and blue But trust me as a friend, | :48:54. | :48:59.
and I'll do all that I can do And I'd do anything for you, | :49:00. | :49:05.
because I want to see you through It just takes time, | :49:06. | :49:15.
hard work and your time You can change your life, | :49:16. | :49:24.
it just takes time It just takes time, | :49:25. | :49:35.
hard work and your time Peter Islands kicking off the | :49:36. | :50:24.
festival at the O2 Academy on Friday night, featuring interesting dance | :50:25. | :50:29.
moves. We have still got great sets to come, but first a band I have | :50:30. | :50:33.
been a fan since I was a teenager, the maestros, Sparks. | :50:34. | :51:36.
His is the number one song in heaven. | :51:37. | :52:03.
If you should die before you wake If you should die | :52:04. | :52:05.
while crossing the street The song that you'll hear, I guarantee | :52:06. | :52:08.
It's number one, all over heaven It's number one, all over heaven | :52:09. | :52:13.
The one that's the rage up here in the clouds | :52:14. | :52:27.
Lyrically weak, but the music's the thing | :52:28. | :52:35.
Gabriel plays it, God how he plays it. | :52:36. | :52:45.
Gabriel plays it, let's hear him play it | :52:46. | :53:39.
It's number one, all over heaven It's number one, all over heaven | :53:40. | :53:44.
The song filters down, down through the clouds | :53:45. | :54:00.
It reaches the earth and winds all around | :54:01. | :54:05.
And then it breaks up in millions of ways | :54:06. | :54:10.
In your homes it becomes advertisements | :54:11. | :54:37.
And in the streets it becomes the children singing. | :54:38. | :54:56.
This town ain't big enough for the both of us | :54:57. | :57:13.
Increasing heart beat You are a khaki-coloured bombadier | :57:14. | :57:34.
This town ain't big enough for the both of us | :57:35. | :57:43.
Daily except for Sunday, you dawdle into the cafe | :57:44. | :57:46.
They need their protein just like you do. | :57:47. | :57:57.
This town ain't big enough for the both of us | :57:58. | :58:43.
This town ain't big enough for the both of us | :58:44. | :58:48.
There'll be more girls who live in town | :58:49. | :59:24.
This town ain't big enough for the both of us | :59:25. | :59:32.
# It's at night when they come When I'm alone, and not with anyone. | :59:33. | :00:20.
# Through the shouts and music of the crowd down the road boozing. | :00:21. | :00:28.
# The bins and the alleyway of the Chinese restaurant. | :00:29. | :00:34.
# Number 3 for 2, and number 4 for 1. | :00:35. | :00:39.
# While the abled bodied vultures monitor and pick at us. | :00:40. | :00:46.
# We're going down and it's no stress I lay and hope | :00:47. | :00:49.
# While the abled bodied vultures monitor and pick at us?. | :00:50. | :00:59.
# We're going down and it's no stress. | :01:00. | :01:01.
# I think about the E As it lowers it's self on me. | :01:02. | :01:23.
# When the light in my phone starts to lose power. | :01:24. | :01:30.
# Through the karaoke it screams it's name | :01:31. | :01:35.
# We are the Baldrick's son, and Blackadders. | :01:36. | :01:44.
# While the able bodied vultures monitor and pick at us. | :01:45. | :01:53.
# We're going down and it's no stress I lay and hope | :01:54. | :01:55.
# While the able bodied vultures monitor and pick at us. | :01:56. | :02:04.
# We're going down and it's no stress. | :02:05. | :02:06.
# (Ooh) Well, laying on a boat, well, what do you do? | :02:07. | :02:15.
