Hi, I'm Tommy Vance and welcome once again to Top Of The Pops.

0:00:020:00:04

It is my absolute promise that it really is going to be a good one.

0:00:040:00:07

-Even my friend Anne-Marie agrees!

-Yep, right.

-OK, you do agree. OK,

0:00:070:00:11

this is a glimpse of what we're going to have in the show.

0:00:110:00:14

Tonight, you can help Robert Palmer. He's Looking For Clues.

0:00:140:00:17

And Madness prove to be no Embarrassment.

0:00:170:00:20

APPLAUSE

0:00:200:00:22

And that all actually happens later.

0:00:240:00:26

But first we're going to have a band for you.

0:00:260:00:28

Now, this song originally came out in 1934, and I looked in the BBC library

0:00:280:00:32

earlier today and there are well over 150 different versions of it.

0:00:320:00:36

It went to number one in 1961 in this country for a band called The Marcels.

0:00:360:00:40

I rather think Showaddywaddy are heading in that direction

0:00:400:00:43

with their version of Blue Moon.

APPLAUSE

0:02:590:03:02

Absolutely great band. If you ever get the chance to see them live, do so.

0:03:070:03:10

They're magnificent entertainers.

0:03:100:03:12

Showaddywaddy there, and their new single called Blue Moon.

0:03:120:03:15

Now, every once in a while record companies put out a thing called a double A-side.

0:03:150:03:18

Here is the other side of The Earth Dies Screaming.

0:03:180:03:21

It's called Dream A Lie and it is by UB40.

0:03:210:03:26

# Why do I have to dream of you when I don't wanna dream a lie?

0:03:510:03:58

# Why do I have to dream of you when I don't wanna dream a lie?

0:03:580:04:06

# Never was a better time for trying to set the words to rhyme

0:04:060:04:10

# Of when a golden love turns blue

0:04:100:04:12

0:04:140:04:21

APPLAUSE

0:06:010:06:03

And that's the other A-side of The Earth Dies Screaming.

0:06:060:06:09

It's called Dream A Lie and it was by UB40.

0:06:090:06:12

Now, they of course come from Birmingham.

0:06:120:06:13

Here are a couple of gentleman who come from the USA.

0:06:130:06:16

To be precise, it is Philadelphia.

0:06:160:06:19

Daryl Hall and John Oates. Welcome.

0:06:190:06:21

-Nice to see you both.

-Yeah, how you doing?

-Bit of a secret here,

0:06:210:06:24

one of my all-time favourite records is She's Gone, which you wrote some years ago.

0:06:240:06:27

-Oh, really?

-Great record.

0:06:270:06:29

Let's talk a little bit about your history because you were

0:06:290:06:32

involved with the Philadelphia Sound, weren't you, for quite some time?

0:06:320:06:36

We started in Philadelphia in the mid '60s, late '60s, and did session work,

0:06:360:06:39

and did everything we could do,

0:06:390:06:41

and we moved to New York in, like, 1970 and kept on going.

0:06:410:06:44

Right, but you actually were involved in a lot of other people's hit records.

0:06:440:06:48

You were just behind the scenes, weren't you?

0:06:480:06:50

I don't even know which ones they were though. What they used to do is

0:06:500:06:53

they used to give us chord charts and said, "OK, you're going to do an album this week,"

0:06:530:06:57

and we didn't know who the album was for or whatever. So I don't even know what I played on.

0:06:570:07:00

-You just sort of lay the tracks down and that was that?

-That was it.

0:07:000:07:03

And then you decided to do your own thing, which you've done very successfully.

0:07:030:07:07

-And at the moment you've got Kiss Is On Your List.

-That's right.

-And a new album.

0:07:070:07:10

-Uh-huh.

-And you're flying where, I think?

-We're going to Munich tomorrow.

0:07:100:07:13

-And then you go to Spain?

-Then Spain and then to Oswego, New York.

0:07:130:07:17

-Back home to record some more?

-No, we're on the road actually. We're doing weekend gigs right now.

0:07:170:07:21

We just decided, we had a few days off so we came here.

0:07:210:07:24

I'm glad you took some time out to visit us.

0:07:240:07:26

I hope the kiss actually gets higher up on the list and becomes a real hit.

0:07:260:07:29

-Let's hope so.

-Daryl Hall and John Oates, thank you very much indeed.

0:07:290:07:32

Here now is Mr Robert Palmer.

0:07:320:07:34

Or there now is Mr Robert Palmer and Looking For Clues.

0:07:340:07:37

# It's crazy but I'm frightened by the sound of the telephone

0:07:510:07:56

# Oh, yeah

0:07:560:07:58

# I'm worried that the caller might have awful news

0:07:580:08:02

# Oh, my

0:08:020:08:04

# Who knows these days where on earth the money goes

0:08:040:08:09

# Oh, yeah

0:08:090:08:11

# No doubt we could put it to a better use

0:08:110:08:16

# Oh, my

0:08:160:08:17

# You keep insisting that nobody showed you how to keep relationships

0:08:240:08:29

# Oh, yeah

0:08:290:08:31

# Your daddy made a real good try

0:08:310:08:36

# Oh, my

0:08:360:08:38

# You said you knew all along we could work it out

0:08:380:08:43

# Oh, yeah

0:08:430:08:45

# Do you have to make a fuss every time we fly?

0:08:450:08:48

# Ooh, I'm looking for clues

0:08:490:08:53

# I'll have to make an effort now just to be serious

0:08:570:09:01

# Oh, yeah

0:09:010:09:03

# Nobody's gonna give you the benefit of the doubt

0:09:030:09:09

# Oh, my

0:09:090:09:11

# Every time I pick a paper up it's harder to believe the news

0:09:110:09:15

# Oh, yeah

0:09:150:09:17

# I'm gonna have to shake it up and twist and shout

0:09:170:09:22

# Oh, my

0:09:220:09:24

# You can't do nothing that you don't put your mind to

0:09:300:09:35

# Oh, yeah

0:09:350:09:37

# I suspected all along you were a dream come true

0:09:370:09:42

# Oh, my

0:09:420:09:44

# I'm never in the dark cos my heart keeps me well informed

0:09:440:09:48

# Oh, yeah

0:09:480:09:50

# I'm convinced that there's a way of getting through to you

0:09:500:09:54

# Ooh, I'm looking for clues. #

0:09:550:09:59

APPLAUSE

0:10:260:10:29

Now that man was actually born in Batley, he was raised

0:10:320:10:34

in Malta till he was nine. He used to sing in a band with Elkie Brooks.

0:10:340:10:37

The band was called Vinegar Joe.

0:10:370:10:38

But now he's a solo artist, as indeed he has been for some time.

0:10:380:10:41

That, of course, was Robert Palmer and his single called Looking For Clues.

0:10:410:10:45

I'm going to give you a clue now.

0:10:450:10:46

This next guest of ours used to be in a band called The Move,

0:10:460:10:49

but now he's a drummer with the ELO.

0:10:490:10:51

Would you recognise Bev Bevan?

0:10:510:10:52

I'm sure you would. Bev, welcome.

0:10:520:10:55

-Nice to see a lad from Birmingham on the programme.

-Oh, thank you. Yes.

0:10:550:10:58

Now, not only are you into music,

0:10:580:10:59

which you have been for a long time, but you're also into books.

0:10:590:11:02

-In fact, I've got it here.

-Yes. Thank you very much.

0:11:020:11:05

Yes, we had an easy year in 1980...

0:11:050:11:07

That's not true, you did a lot of touring.

0:11:070:11:09

Well, it gave me time to write this, which is something I've been wanting to do for a long time.

0:11:090:11:13

It's the type of book about a band which isn't just a straightforward picture book.

0:11:130:11:17

It really is a history of how a band was created,

0:11:170:11:19

the good times and the bad.

0:11:190:11:20

Yeah, it goes right back through Move times and through ELO,

0:11:200:11:24

and actually tells it like it really is.

0:11:240:11:26

It doesn't just skate over the surface, it's in-depth.

0:11:260:11:29

-In just one word, how really is it?

-How is it? What, the book?

-Yeah.

0:11:290:11:34

-And the life.

-Great. I can't complain.

0:11:340:11:37

I've had a long, long time in the business and I've been very lucky

0:11:370:11:40

to go through all The Move and then through ELO and great success.

0:11:400:11:43

Well, you look very healthy on it.

0:11:430:11:44

Now, this next song that's coming up is your song, so you introduce it.

0:11:440:11:47

OK. This is our latest hit, folks. And it's called Don't Walk Away.

0:11:470:11:51

And how could you? Indeed. From Legs And Company.

0:11:510:11:54

# Why do I say

0:12:090:12:12

# Don't walk away

0:12:120:12:17

# You'll be the way you were before

0:12:170:12:20

# When you don't want me any more

0:12:200:12:24

# Don't turn around

0:12:240:12:27

# Don't ever leave

0:12:270:12:30

# A lonely room where empty days

0:12:310:12:35

# Are gathering to meet me when you're gone

0:12:350:12:40

# Gone

0:12:410:12:43

# How in the world will I go on?

0:12:430:12:48

# Don't walk away

0:12:480:12:51

# All you gotta do is stay

0:12:530:12:55

# Don't walk away

0:12:550:12:59

# All you gotta do is stay

0:13:000:13:03

# Don't walk away

0:13:030:13:07

# Don't walk away

0:13:090:13:11

# Don't walk away

0:13:110:13:12

# Don't say goodbye

0:13:120:13:14

# Don't say goodbye

0:13:140:13:16

# Don't turn around

0:13:160:13:18

# Don't turn around

0:13:180:13:20

# Don't let it die

0:13:200:13:22

# Don't let it die

0:13:220:13:23

# When shadows fall

0:13:230:13:25

# When shadows fall

0:13:250:13:27

# When day is done

0:13:270:13:29

# When day is done

0:13:290:13:31

# All through the night

0:13:310:13:33

# All through the night

0:13:330:13:35

All of my life

0:13:350:13:37

# All of my life

0:13:370:13:39

# Don't walk away

0:13:390:13:42

# Is it a dream?

0:13:480:13:51

# When will it end?

0:13:510:13:54

# When everything we've ever known has ended and I'm all alone

0:13:550:14:03

# Where will I go?

0:14:030:14:05

# Where will I be?

0:14:060:14:08

# The feelings that I've never shown

0:14:100:14:14

# Maybe I'll find the answer when you're gone

0:14:140:14:18

# Gone

0:14:190:14:21

# How in the world will I go on?

0:14:210:14:26

# Don't walk away

0:14:260:14:31

# All you gotta do is stay

0:14:310:14:34

# Don't walk away

0:14:340:14:38

# All you gotta do is stay

0:14:380:14:42

# Don't walk away... #

0:14:420:14:45

APPLAUSE

0:14:450:14:47

And that, of course, was ELO, and it was danced to by Legs And Co,

0:14:470:14:50

as if you didn't know.

0:14:500:14:52

It was called Don't Walk Away. That's at 26 in the charts.

0:14:520:14:55

Let's see what's happening between 30 and number 21.

0:14:550:14:58

One Man Woman is 30.

0:14:580:15:00

Starting his concerts this week. Lonely Together at 29.

0:15:000:15:03

Matchbox strike downwards to number 28.

0:15:030:15:07

Suddenly descend to 27.

0:15:070:15:09

Don't Walk Away.

0:15:090:15:12

Kenny Rodgers escorts his Lady to 25.

0:15:120:15:14

Odyssey are finding the way out at 24.

0:15:140:15:16

New at 23. Rock And Roll Ain't Noise Pollution.

0:15:160:15:20

Ace Of Spades at 22.

0:15:200:15:23

Status Quo shed 11 places with What You're Proposing.

0:15:230:15:26

APPLAUSE

0:15:260:15:29

And that's what's happening in that aspect of the charts.

0:15:290:15:31

Now can I introduce you to, well, what I think are one

0:15:310:15:34

of the hottest properties in the record business at the moment.

0:15:340:15:37

With their first ever single, here come the Stray Cats and Runaway Boys.

0:15:370:15:41

# Get kicked out for coming home at dawn

0:16:060:16:09

# Mum and Dad cursed the day you were born

0:16:090:16:12

# Throw your clothes into a duffle bag

0:16:120:16:14

# Shoutin' as ya slam the door The home is a drag

0:16:140:16:17

# Who can I turn to? Where can I stay?

0:16:170:16:20

# I heard a place that's open all night and all day

0:16:200:16:22
