-..the battle of the Baby Beef

-begins in the Cattle Ring.

-Last year, the most expensive

-animal sold was from this class.

-It was sold for 6,000.

-There were high hopes

-again this year.

-Meinir will be concentrating

-on the sheep championships.

-Will the Beltex reign supreme

-once again...

-..just as they have

-done for the past decade?

-How healthy is the pork industry

-in Wales?

-We met with Rob Rattray,

-an ambassador for the industry...

-..to hear about a new initiative...

-..to raise the profile of producers

-and sellers here in Wales.

-I was also present for this

-morning's pig championships.

-Everyone wanted to know if a

-Welsh-bred pig could win once again.

-The Winter Fair is recognized as

-one of Europe's best stock events.

-Winning the Supreme Championships...

-..and getting a good price at the

-auctions is a tremendous honour.

-But have you considered what happens

-to the animals that are bought?

-Alun Elias from Garndolbenmaen...

-..bought the Baby Beef Champion

-last year.

-It was Sky Walker,

-a steer sired by a Limousin bull.

-Also, the reserve, She's A Peach,

-a heifer also sired by a Limousin.

-I had spotted the steer

-at the 2014 Beef Expo.

-I liked the look of him.

-It was then that I started

-to think about buying him...

-..at the 2014 Winter Fair.

-The steer came into the ring,

-made one lap...

-..and I said to myself

-that I had to have it.

-It's a great steer.

-You won't see such a wide Limousin

-cross steer in your lifetime.

-I went in at 4,500.

-It went up to 6,000

-and I bought it.

-This year, Alun brought Sky Walker

-and She's A Peach...

-..back to the Winter Fair

-in the continental classes.

-Despite not winning their classes,

-Alun was hoping for a good price.

-When it comes to selling

-at the Winter Fair...

-..Sky Walker will have to go

-because he's a steer.

-I will feel sad that he's going

-but a steer is a steer...

-..so he has to go to be slaughtered

-to be eaten.

-As far as She's A Peach

-is concerned...

-..we could keep the heifer

-to breed animals ourselves.

-She'll be served by a bull and maybe

-produce a calf we can show.

-Then we'll bring them back

-to the Winter Fair or Royal Welsh.

-Alun still has a chance

-in the Continental Baby Beef class.

-Black Magic

-is a great looking heifer.

-She is of a really good length.

-She will become a good cow.

-Black Satin is a heifer...

-..with a tremendous conformation

-and shape.

-She has a lovely square top line,

-a lovely head.

-She walks perfectly.

-I can't fault the heifer.

-The Baby Beef classes

-always attract a lot of interest.

-These animals often go on to become

-Supreme Champions of the future.

-We start the second day

-with the Baby Beef.

-I'm joined by Andrew Davies

-from Llangadog.

-You're an old hand

-at this competition.

-What was the highest price

-you achieved?

-We sold one for 7,000

-in Brecon some four years ago.

-These sell really well

-if you produce a good one.

-They're a good size

-to make a profit on.

-They are young calves really.

-They haven't had the time

-to be fully rounded off.

-They still have to look right.

-You can't just drag

-any animal out of the shed.

-These animals are prepared

-months in advance.

-Not many rise to the top.

-You might only get one

-in your whole working life.

-The competition has moved on

-from ten or fifteen years ago.

-A good one back then stood out.

-Today, you have maybe ten

-that are good enough to win.

-The judge is Andrew Anderson

-from Elgin in Scotland.

-The Scots don't always look for

-the same things in their cattle.

-It'll be interesting

-to see what he goes for.

-I would say the animal in second

-place has better hind quarters.

-I would say so too but is as

-complete a beast as the first one?

-Class 25a was won by Winnie

-owned by PL and OJ Watkins.

-Black Satin claimed the reserve

-owned by Robert Alun Elias.

-In Class 25b, Mr JA Hollingsworth

-won with his heifer, Jeanie.

-Class 25c was won by Coco

-owned by TA and LC Lyon.

-The heifers have come in

-and they're being drawn in.

-They look great.

-I like Jim Hollingsworth's heifer.

-She'll be there or thereabouts.

-She has a good length to her.

-She's good on her feet.
