Donald Trump becomes the first sitting US president

:00:39.:00:45.

to visit the Western Wall - placing his hand on one of the most

:00:46.:00:48.

And President Trump says he could many things could happen that could

:00:49.:01:07.

not happen before. But even while he's abroad

:01:08.:01:13.

the president battles controversy back at home -

:01:14.:01:15.

could he seems to say he didn't tell

:01:16.:01:19.

the Russians the intelligence Theresa May is supposed to win this

:01:20.:01:25.

election in a landslide so why Tonight the Prime Minister

:01:26.:01:33.

speaks to the country - after a rethink on one of her key

:01:34.:01:41.

manifesto pledges. Twitter goes wild over this photo

:01:42.:01:43.

of President Trump on his weekend Hello, I am Katty Kay in Washington,

:01:44.:01:52.

Christian Fraser is in London. Donald Trump said today there's now

:01:53.:01:59.

a unique opportunity for peace between Israelis and Palestinians

:02:00.:02:00.

and the White House clearly believes he's the right man to take

:02:01.:02:05.

advantage of the moment. Good luck with that,

:02:06.:02:13.

is effectively the reaction of the many people who have tried

:02:14.:02:16.

and failed to bring But what's new, says

:02:17.:02:18.

the administration, is partly Mr Trump's skill as a negotiator

:02:19.:02:27.

as well as also the emerging alignment between Israel

:02:28.:02:30.

and Sunni Arab states - The President sees a peace agreement

:02:31.:02:33.

as part of that effort, and after his weekend visit

:02:34.:02:37.

to the Saudi capital Riyadh, he says he has found

:02:38.:02:37.

new "reasons for hope". If we are willing to work together,

:02:38.:02:38.

I believe that a new level of partnership is possible

:02:39.:02:38.

and will happen. One that will bring greater safety

:02:39.:02:39.

to this region, greater security to the United States and greater

:02:40.:02:39.

prosperity to the world. This includes a renewed effort

:02:40.:02:42.

at peace between the Israelis and the Palestinians and I thank

:02:43.:02:47.

the Prime Minister for his commitment to pursuing

:02:48.:02:52.

the peace process. I've heard it's one of the toughest

:02:53.:02:54.

deals of all, but I have a feeling that we are going to get

:02:55.:03:01.

there eventually, I hope. Israel's Prime Minister

:03:02.:03:08.

re-stated his longstanding position that he is a partner for peace -

:03:09.:03:15.

but with the same You have noted so six Hinckley the

:03:16.:03:26.

common dangers are turning the former enemies into partners and

:03:27.:03:32.

that is where we see something new and potentially something very

:03:33.:03:36.

promising. It won't be simple but for the first time in many years and

:03:37.:03:43.

for the first time in my lifetime I see a real hope for change.

:03:44.:03:46.

Mr Trump is the first US President to arrive in Tel Aviv

:03:47.:03:48.

He is also the first sitting President to visit

:03:49.:03:52.

of the Israeli Prime Minister. though not in the company

:03:53.:03:59.

You'll see he stood alone with his thoughts for several moments,

:04:00.:04:02.

before placing a hand written note between the cracks.

:04:03.:04:04.

Our chief international correspondent Lyse Doucet

:04:05.:04:08.

I was watching that before we came on air and it was said, common

:04:09.:04:23.

enemies turning into partners. So he is buying into this idea.

:04:24.:04:34.

Definitely. I have just come from Riyadh and there is a lot of talk

:04:35.:04:40.

now about some Arab states including Saudi Arabia and the United Arab

:04:41.:04:47.

Emirates are, as one minister said to bringing down 70 years of hatred

:04:48.:04:52.

and beginning the normalisation of relations with Israel. There is a

:04:53.:04:57.

door document where they are talking about business permits and tourism

:04:58.:05:00.

visas. They are trying to get a new relationship with Israel because

:05:01.:05:04.

they want to work with them and other strategic goals. As far as

:05:05.:05:07.

Saudi Arabia is concerned it is widely known but not much talked of

:05:08.:05:11.

that there are contacts between the two countries, there have been some

:05:12.:05:16.

senior Saudis who have visited Israel and vice versa. They have

:05:17.:05:20.

been talking behind-the-scenes and both agree Errani is the main enemy.

:05:21.:05:25.

Now they have President Trump in the White House of reading with that.

:05:26.:05:30.

And when Israel looks to deal with the Palestinians it sees a wider

:05:31.:05:35.

peace. That seems to be a new bargaining chip in this process.

:05:36.:05:42.

One of the things that struck me about this is the raccoons are

:05:43.:05:46.

making it clear they will not lecture the Middle East and human

:05:47.:05:50.

rights. I wonder if you are hearing other concerns from European

:05:51.:05:54.

partners over issues for example like Yemen or other human rights

:05:55.:05:58.

issues which might be tricky for America in this closer relationship

:05:59.:06:02.

with Gulf states. They were not on the agenda. In Riyadh, many noted

:06:03.:06:10.

that, not human rights. The Yemen question came up on a press

:06:11.:06:21.

conference in which this American civilian -- Secretary of State said

:06:22.:06:25.

if we give them better arms they will be able to target better. I

:06:26.:06:30.

spoke to a senior American official in Riyadh and he said the difference

:06:31.:06:35.

between Obama and Trump is that Trump will not tell the Saudis how

:06:36.:06:40.

they should run the kingdom, and that is very important. They are

:06:41.:06:45.

doing deals and they making new alliances. But the other thing on

:06:46.:06:50.

the agenda is trying to make peace with the Palestinians and the White

:06:51.:06:53.

House made it clear they want to see some confidence building measures as

:06:54.:06:57.

they call them, before they arrive with the Palestinians. A series of

:06:58.:07:00.

steps happen taken to ease the steps and that crossing between Jordan and

:07:01.:07:07.

the West Bank, to include to create new industrial zones and jobs and

:07:08.:07:10.

allow more building permits. Is this enough? Is this a move in the right

:07:11.:07:17.

direction? We can cross to the West Bank to join the Palestinian

:07:18.:07:22.

entrepreneur, do you welcome the steps? We have seen this song and

:07:23.:07:34.

dance before. Where Israel tries to make some kind of public gesture to

:07:35.:07:40.

show a new US president that they are serious about peace. The reality

:07:41.:07:45.

on the ground is that the boot of Israeli military occupation has been

:07:46.:07:50.

on the Palestinian neck for 50 years. Incremental changes in the

:07:51.:07:54.

business field is not going to solve the political crisis. I wake up

:07:55.:07:58.

every day trying to create jobs in Palestine and the thing that stops

:07:59.:08:02.

us doing it the way we are supposed to is the Israeli Government as they

:08:03.:08:08.

maintain this 50 year military occupation. I will believe it when I

:08:09.:08:13.

see it, and to see it means to get the boot of occupation off our neck.

:08:14.:08:19.

Even if it does not start by ending the occupation, by creating a

:08:20.:08:22.

Palestinian state, you know better than I just how long that will take

:08:23.:08:28.

and has been taking, if they make moves to make life easier for

:08:29.:08:33.

Palestinians, to create the possibility of creating jobs,

:08:34.:08:37.

encouraging investment, would that be a step, however small, in the

:08:38.:08:42.

right direction? Definitely, every step taken to juice the pressures of

:08:43.:08:46.

this very volatile reality are welcome. But the steps need to be

:08:47.:08:50.

taken in a sustainable way, and they also need to be placed into the

:08:51.:08:55.

context of resolving this conflict. We may not resolve the conflict for

:08:56.:09:00.

another 100 years, but will Israel remain micromanaging the Palestinian

:09:01.:09:07.

economy? That cannot be sustainable. Every step forward that looks

:09:08.:09:14.

positive, that allows us to breeze a bit is welcome. But we will not be

:09:15.:09:19.

tricked into thinking our permit military occupier has any idea to

:09:20.:09:24.

allow asked to be free. That is what has to happen for negotiations to

:09:25.:09:30.

start. And what about the entry of President Trump who makes it clear

:09:31.:09:35.

he has no rule book, will take a totally original way of approaching

:09:36.:09:38.

the process, could that make a difference? I don't believe what he

:09:39.:09:44.

says. He approached the region exactly the same way other

:09:45.:09:47.

presidents did. By dumping more arms into an already collapsing region

:09:48.:09:53.

where people are dying daily, propping up governments which are

:09:54.:09:56.

not representative like Saudi Arabia, and then coming to Palestine

:09:57.:10:01.

and on his first day here breaking international law by taking the

:10:02.:10:06.

Israeli Prime Minister's invitation to go to the Western Wall, which is

:10:07.:10:10.

in the middle of occupied territory. He would do well to read

:10:11.:10:15.

international law and put people around him that don't have the

:10:16.:10:18.

conflict of interest that they currently have. Thank you very much

:10:19.:10:25.

for joining us. And there you get some of the cynicism and scepticism

:10:26.:10:29.

of the Palestinian side, even among those who would like to see a new

:10:30.:10:36.

peace process. We will hear more about the Palestinian sentiments

:10:37.:10:41.

tomorrow when President Trump meets the panellists Delyn -- Palestinian

:10:42.:10:53.

president. It is clear there is good chemistry between Trump and

:10:54.:10:58.

Netanyahu and their wives. They are having dinner now. I'm sure they

:10:59.:10:59.

have a lot to talk about. Well many a US president has tried

:11:00.:11:01.

and failed when it comes to striking a peace deal

:11:02.:11:04.

between the Israelis One man who knows the process

:11:05.:11:06.

and players well is George Mitchell, who served as President Obama's

:11:07.:11:10.

Middle East Envoy. The president speaking in Israel

:11:11.:11:22.

today talked of array opportunity for harmony, prosperity and peace in

:11:23.:11:28.

the Middle East between Israelis and Palestinians. Do you agree there is

:11:29.:11:32.

this opportunity and can he take advantage of it? I hope and pray he

:11:33.:11:37.

will. It is very difficult now stop there is a high level of mistrust,

:11:38.:11:44.

polarisation on both sides. The two state solution, which is the only

:11:45.:11:47.

feasible solution, is the losing ground in both Israel and among

:11:48.:11:53.

Palestinians. So it is a huge challenge but the effort must be

:11:54.:11:55.

made because the history of the region is that when there is no

:11:56.:12:00.

visible effort to bring about a resolution of conflict, violence

:12:01.:12:03.

tends to flare. The danger of violence now is much greater than in

:12:04.:12:07.

the past because of the tremendous up evil in the entire region. I was

:12:08.:12:11.

talking to senior White House officials before the trip and it

:12:12.:12:15.

seemed to me they are very optimistic that sheer force of

:12:16.:12:21.

personality Donald Trump can do what you, amongst others, have failed to

:12:22.:12:27.

do. Do you think that is enough? I don't think personality is enough.

:12:28.:12:32.

But I hope and pray that it comes about by whatever means. The reality

:12:33.:12:37.

is that there are huge differences between Israelis and Palestinians

:12:38.:12:40.

and all the core issues. But they could be overcome if there were not

:12:41.:12:46.

the very deep hostility and mistrust that exists, not just amongst the

:12:47.:12:51.

peoples but the leaders. When the president and Prime Minister in 2010

:12:52.:12:59.

I was in the room. Secretary Clinton was the only other person. And it

:13:00.:13:05.

did not bring traction in the way we had hoped. That if they met it would

:13:06.:13:12.

give them reason to continue. It validated their worst concerns about

:13:13.:13:16.

the other. So what this President's team seemed to believe is that if

:13:17.:13:22.

President Trump can build a good relationship with Netanyahu you and

:13:23.:13:32.

president of us then that will be a catalyst, he will be able to do

:13:33.:13:37.

something different because he is a good negotiator. Do you see that in

:13:38.:13:41.

Mr Trump? Do you see that capacity? I hope it is there. For the sake of

:13:42.:13:47.

peace in the middle east and for American interests. So far at least,

:13:48.:13:55.

the conflict has not been able to be resolved on the basis of

:13:56.:13:59.

personality, and there have been many strong and powerful

:14:00.:14:03.

personalities involved. A dozen presidents, 20 secretaries of state.

:14:04.:14:06.

Many Israeli and Palestinian leaders. At times and circumstances

:14:07.:14:11.

change, they are not the same now as they were six or seven years ago and

:14:12.:14:16.

much different than ten or 20 years ago. So it is possible, not likely

:14:17.:14:20.

at this time, but I commend the effort. The president has made it

:14:21.:14:28.

clear during this trip that the primary focus of America's foreign

:14:29.:14:32.

policy in the Middle East is Iran. He will around the Gulf state

:14:33.:14:38.

friends and the Israelis and use that as a way to distance the world

:14:39.:14:45.

from Iran. Is the degree to which she is doing that appropriate and

:14:46.:14:50.

helpful? I feel the trip was most useful in the following respects:

:14:51.:14:56.

Isis and Al-Qaeda and those affiliated with them want the

:14:57.:15:03.

conflict to be and to be seen as a conflict between all of Islam and

:15:04.:15:10.

all of the West, led by the US. Donald Trump's prior rhetoric and

:15:11.:15:17.

team a slim ban on all Moslems, played right into Isis's point of

:15:18.:15:22.

view. It furthered the impression that they wanted further to. In this

:15:23.:15:28.

trip he has essentially reversed that position. So if nothing else

:15:29.:15:32.

happens on this trip, that makes it significant. We did not get to Iran,

:15:33.:15:37.

we will have to come back to that. Thank you for coming in.

:15:38.:15:40.

A lot of people were saying that strange in rhetoric is welcome. You

:15:41.:15:49.

were saying in that interview, you were at the White House last week,

:15:50.:15:53.

and one of the first things they did when they got off the plane in

:15:54.:15:58.

Riyadh was signed $100 billion arms deal with the Saudis. Surely that

:15:59.:16:02.

has unnerved the Israelis somewhat. Why do you tell us what they are

:16:03.:16:05.

trying to do with the Gulf Arab states? It's interesting. That arms

:16:06.:16:12.

deal, I think, it is part of getting sunny Gulf states to get part of the

:16:13.:16:17.

Burton sharing. And I hear from the White House that it is about the

:16:18.:16:21.

fight against extremism and about providing a counterweight to Iran.

:16:22.:16:26.

Throughout the trip to Riyadh, and to Israel, there was the conference

:16:27.:16:31.

restraint of this will give us ballast against Iran. Interestingly,

:16:32.:16:35.

Donald Trump has not ripped up the Iranians nuclear deal. So is some of

:16:36.:16:42.

this rhetoric to appease people who want America to take a tougher

:16:43.:16:47.

stance? The aim is to get Arab states to have a counter to run

:16:48.:16:52.

themselves. But the evidence is is it would become like a Nato deal

:16:53.:16:57.

from Gulf Arab states. And that is exactly the language they use. A

:16:58.:17:03.

Nato type arrangement against Iran. We said last week.

:17:04.:17:05.

We said last week it was a good time to leave Washington and the furore

:17:06.:17:08.

that surrounded the President, with the appointment of special

:17:09.:17:15.

He was asked if he betrayed a source.

:17:16.:17:27.

Just so you understand, I never mentioned the word

:17:28.:17:29.

Never mentioned it during theatconversation.

:17:30.:17:31.

You were all saying I did, so you had another story wrong.

:17:32.:17:34.

I think that is the first time we have heard the president confirm

:17:35.:17:47.

what intelligence sources had been keen here not to confirm which is

:17:48.:17:52.

that Israel was the source of the information handed to the Russians!

:17:53.:18:00.

Allies who are worrying about whether they can share secrets with

:18:01.:18:04.

Donald Trump, the fact that he will confirm things in public that are

:18:05.:18:09.

meant to be secret, and clearly wanted to... But when he sticks to

:18:10.:18:18.

the strip -- script he's good. But you saw him, he shut everybody up

:18:19.:18:23.

and wanted to make that point. Yeah, he had to get that in, didn't he?

:18:24.:18:29.

There and in Washington the enquiries and Congress will continue

:18:30.:18:31.

while he is away. And the Sunday television talk shows were full of

:18:32.:18:35.

it, including reaction to a late-breaking story from Friday.

:18:36.:18:40.

There was another report from that conversation in the Oval Office. I

:18:41.:18:48.

just fired the head of the FBI, said the president. He was crazy, a

:18:49.:18:57.

here is some of the weekend reaction. I don't remember exact

:18:58.:19:06.

what he said. He said he feels hamstrung. I'm almost speechless, I

:19:07.:19:09.

don't know why someone would say something like that. But I know Mr

:19:10.:19:15.

lover of is the stooge of a thug and a murderer. President Trump calls

:19:16.:19:21.

this a witchhunt. What you think? I wouldn't use that term. These issues

:19:22.:19:24.

are being raised in the press. People are going to the press who

:19:25.:19:28.

appear to be in the know or at least pretend to be, they leak information

:19:29.:19:31.

and the press reports it. These questions need to be answered. John

:19:32.:19:40.

McCain. Do we take it that Comey sought this quote and went, right,

:19:41.:19:46.

that's it. I'm going to testify. Let's put it this way. If I called

:19:47.:19:50.

you a nut job and at how would you feel? You can call me that off air

:19:51.:19:59.

but not on air! But he's a proud guy, his integrity is potent to

:20:00.:20:02.

James Comey. The president has not made any friends and intelligence

:20:03.:20:10.

agencies and by firing Mr Comey he can probably expect worse. I think

:20:11.:20:12.

it's worth reminding everybody of the investigations that are taking

:20:13.:20:16.

place. You have enquiries into Russian interference and the

:20:17.:20:21.

election and links between Russia and Trump. Wheels have the in the

:20:22.:20:26.

Senate judicial committee into Michael Flynn. Then there's the

:20:27.:20:34.

enquiry within the house oversight committee into macro one -- Comey's

:20:35.:20:44.

memos. And then the Justice Department investigation lot. So

:20:45.:20:51.

what they are saying is that even though Robert Muller will take the

:20:52.:20:54.

lead on everything, these enquiries will continue. Is amazing they

:20:55.:21:01.

getting anything else done. With that amount of enquiries into links

:21:02.:21:07.

to Russia. Here is what people are starting to say, top Democrats have

:21:08.:21:10.

said to me, we like the investigations, we want to make sure

:21:11.:21:13.

we can keep our role in them, we don't want them all handed over to

:21:14.:21:19.

the FBI. But we also don't want them wrapped up too soon because we hope

:21:20.:21:22.

they are still highly of the president as he goes into the

:21:23.:21:26.

mid-term elections next year cars we feel this is good for Democrats. So

:21:27.:21:32.

everybody is playing a game here. And it's good, because that will be

:21:33.:21:38.

seen in the public domain whereas Robert Muller will be very private.

:21:39.:21:44.

And could go on for years. Something that will not is the British

:21:45.:21:47.

election campaign. Tonight the Prime Minister talks

:21:48.:21:47.

to Andrew Neil on the BBC. And she is under pressure

:21:48.:21:56.

because the polls are narrowing. Yes, when the election was called

:21:57.:21:58.

the Conservative lead Now looking at a poll of polls

:21:59.:22:05.

the Conservative Party is on 46%. The Labour Party at 33%

:22:06.:22:07.

and the Liberal Democrats But some polls have even brought

:22:08.:22:09.

the lead down to single digits. The principles on which we have

:22:10.:22:14.

based our social care policy remain We need to ensure

:22:15.:22:22.

that we have long-term We need to be able to

:22:23.:22:25.

ensure that we can fund We are doing the honest thing

:22:26.:22:30.

about putting a proposal to the British people

:22:31.:22:33.

and they will make How can it be honest,

:22:34.:22:35.

:22:42.:22:49.

first of all, this is a big issue, we need to address it

:22:50.:22:53.

and we are being honest that we must fix it

:22:54.:22:56.

and that is what I want to do. I am not going to bury my head

:22:57.:22:59.

in the sand, I am not going to play politics with it,

which is what Jeremy You are just going to
