We come to this Cathedral today Margaret Hilda Thatcher, to give | 0:13:06 | 0:13:09
and to commend her into God's hands. We recall with great gratitude | 0:13:09 | 0:13:12
her leadership of this nation, her courage, her steadfastness, | 0:13:12 | 0:13:14
and her resolve to accomplish what she believed to be right for | 0:13:14 | 0:13:16
the common good. We remember the values by which she lived, | 0:13:16 | 0:13:22
her diligence, her courtesy, | 0:13:22 | 0:13:32
0:13:32 | 0:13:32 | ||
and her personal concern for the wellbeing of individuals. | 0:13:32 | 0:13:37

she enjoyed with Denis, and we pray for her family and friends | 0:13:42 | 0:13:48
and for all who mourn her passing. We continue to pray for this nation, | 0:13:48 | 0:13:55
giving thanks for its traditions of freedom, for the rule of law | 0:13:55 | 0:14:00
and for parliamentary democracy, remembering the part we have played | 0:14:00 | 0:14:05

harmony and truth we may seek to be channels of Christ's faith, | 0:14:23 | 0:14:29
hope and compassion to all the world; | 0:14:29 | 0:14:34

be strong in the Lord, | 0:17:21 | 0:17:24
and in the power of his might. | 0:17:24 | 0:17:28
Put on the whole armour of God, | 0:17:28 | 0:17:31
that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. | 0:17:31 | 0:17:37
For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, | 0:17:37 | 0:17:46
against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, | 0:17:46 | 0:17:54
against spiritual wickedness in high places. | 0:17:54 | 0:17:59
Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, | 0:18:00 | 0:18:06
that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, | 0:18:06 | 0:18:12
to stand. Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, | 0:18:12 | 0:18:21
and having on the breastplate of righteousness; | 0:18:21 | 0:18:27
And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace; | 0:18:27 | 0:18:34

The storm of conflicting opinions the Mrs Thatcher who became a | 0:28:57 | 0:29:02
But today the remains of the real Margaret Hilda Thatcher | 0:29:02 | 0:29:08
are here at her funeral service. Lying here, she is one of us, | 0:29:08 | 0:29:15
subject to the common destiny of all human beings. | 0:29:15 | 0:29:21
There is an important place for debating policies and legacy; | 0:29:21 | 0:29:27
for assessing the impact of political decisions | 0:29:27 | 0:29:31
on the everyday lives of individuals and communities. | 0:29:31 | 0:29:35
Parliament held a frank debate last week - | 0:29:35 | 0:29:39
but here and today is neither the time nor the place. | 0:29:39 | 0:29:46
This, at Lady Thatcher's personal request, is a funeral service, | 0:29:46 | 0:29:52
not a memorial service with the customary eulogies. | 0:29:52 | 0:29:57
At such a time, the parson should not aspire to the judgments | 0:29:58 | 0:30:03
which are proper to the politician; | 0:30:03 | 0:30:07
instead, this is a place for ordinary human compassion | 0:30:07 | 0:30:12
of the kind that is reconciling. | 0:30:12 | 0:30:15
It is also the place for the simple truths | 0:30:15 | 0:30:19
which transcend political debate. | 0:30:19 | 0:30:23
And above all it is the place for hope. | 0:30:23 | 0:30:29
But it must be very difficult for those members of her family, | 0:30:29 | 0:30:33
and those closely associated with her, | 0:30:33 | 0:30:37
to recognise the wife, mother and grandmother | 0:30:37 | 0:30:42
in the mythological figure. | 0:30:42 | 0:30:46
Our hearts go out to Mark and Carol and their families, | 0:30:46 | 0:30:52
and also to those who cared for Lady Thatcher with such devotion, | 0:30:52 | 0:30:58
especially in her later years. | 0:30:58 | 0:31:01
One thing that everyone has noted is the courtesy and personal kindness | 0:31:01 | 0:31:05
which she showed to those who worked for her, | 0:31:05 | 0:31:09
as well as her capacity to reach out to the young, | 0:31:09 | 0:31:13
in the world's eyes, "important". | 0:31:13 | 0:31:19
The letter from a young boy early on in her time as Prime Minister | 0:31:19 | 0:31:23
is a typical example. Nine-year-old David wrote to say: | 0:31:23 | 0:31:28
"Last night when we were saying prayers, | 0:31:28 | 0:31:32
"my daddy said everyone has done wrong things except Jesus." | 0:31:32 | 0:31:38
And I said, "I don't think you have done bad things | 0:31:38 | 0:31:42
"because you are the Prime Minister. Am I right or is my daddy?" | 0:31:42 | 0:31:50
Perhaps the most remarkable thing is that the Prime Minister replied | 0:31:50 | 0:31:54
in her own hand in a very straightforward letter | 0:31:54 | 0:31:57
which took the question seriously. And she said: | 0:31:57 | 0:32:01
"However good we try to be, we can never be as kind, | 0:32:01 | 0:32:05
"gentle and wise as Jesus. There will be times when we do or say | 0:32:05 | 0:32:11
"some thing we wish we hadn't done and we shall be sorry | 0:32:11 | 0:32:15
"and try not to do it again." | 0:32:15 | 0:32:18
She was always reaching out | 0:32:18 | 0:32:20
and trying to help in typically un-coded terms. | 0:32:20 | 0:32:26
I was once sitting next to her at some City function. | 0:32:26 | 0:32:30
In the midst of describing | 0:32:30 | 0:32:32
how Hayek's Road To Serfdom had influenced her thinking, | 0:32:32 | 0:32:36
she suddenly grasped my wrist and said very emphatically, | 0:32:37 | 0:32:42
"Don't touch the duck pate, Bishop - it's very fattening." | 0:32:42 | 0:32:52
0:32:52 | 0:32:53 | ||
She described her own religious upbringing in a lecture she gave | 0:32:53 | 0:32:56
in the nearby church of St Lawrence Jewry: | 0:32:56 | 0:33:00
"We often went to church twice on Sundays, | 0:33:00 | 0:33:02
"as well as on other occasions during the week. | 0:33:02 | 0:33:05
"We were taught there always to make up our own minds | 0:33:05 | 0:33:08
"and never take the easy way of following the crowd." | 0:33:08 | 0:33:13
Her upbringing of course was in the Methodism | 0:33:13 | 0:33:15
to which this country owes a huge debt. | 0:33:15 | 0:33:19
When it was time to challenge the political and economic status quo | 0:33:19 | 0:33:23
in 19th-century Britain, | 0:33:23 | 0:33:26
it was so often the Methodists who took the lead. | 0:33:26 | 0:33:31
The Tolpuddle Martyrs, for example, were led not by proto-Marxists | 0:33:31 | 0:33:35
but by Methodist lay preachers. | 0:33:35 | 0:33:39
Today's first lesson describes the struggle | 0:33:39 | 0:33:42
with the principalities and powers. | 0:33:42 | 0:33:45
Perseverance in struggle and the courage to be | 0:33:45 | 0:33:49
were characteristic of Margaret Thatcher. | 0:33:49 | 0:33:52
In a setting like this, | 0:33:52 | 0:33:54
in the presence of the leaders of the nation, | 0:33:54 | 0:34:00
it is easy to forget the immense hurdles she had to climb. | 0:34:00 | 0:34:06
Beginning in the upper floors | 0:34:06 | 0:34:08
of her father's grocer's shop in Grantham, | 0:34:08 | 0:34:11
through Oxford as a scientist and, later, | 0:34:11 | 0:34:13
as part of the team that invented Mr Whippy ice cream, | 0:34:13 | 0:34:17
s | 0:34:17 | 0:34:21 | |
By the time she entered Parliament in 1959 | 0:34:21 | 0:34:25
she was part of a cohort of only 4% of women in the House of Commons. | 0:34:25 | 0:34:32
She had experienced many rebuffs along the way, | 0:34:32 | 0:34:36
often on the short list for candidates only to be disqualified | 0:34:36 | 0:34:40
by prejudice against a woman - and, worse, a woman with children. | 0:34:40 | 0:34:47
She applied herself to her work with formidable energy and passion | 0:34:47 | 0:34:51
and continued to reflect on how faith and politics | 0:34:52 | 0:34:56
related to one another. | 0:34:56 | 0:34:59
In the Lawrence Jewry lecture she said that: | 0:34:59 | 0:35:01
"Christianity offers no easy solutions | 0:35:01 | 0:35:04
"to political and economic issues. | 0:35:04 | 0:35:09
"It teaches us that we cannot achieve a compassionate society | 0:35:09 | 0:35:13
"simply by passing new laws | 0:35:13 | 0:35:16
"and appointing more staff to administer them." | 0:35:16 | 0:35:20
She was very aware that there are prior dispositions | 0:35:20 | 0:35:25
which are needed to make market economics | 0:35:25 | 0:35:30
and democratic institutions function well: | 0:35:30 | 0:35:35
the habits of truth-telling, mutual sympathy, | 0:35:35 | 0:35:39
and the capacity to co-operate. These dispositions are incubated | 0:35:39 | 0:35:46
a | 0:35:46 | 0:35:51 | |
In her words, "The basic ties of the family | 0:35:51 | 0:35:55
"are at the heart of our society and are the nursery of civic virtue". | 0:35:55 | 0:36:02
Such moral and spiritual capital is accumulated over many generations | 0:36:02 | 0:36:08
but can be easily eroded. | 0:36:08 | 0:36:13
Life is a struggle to make the right choices | 0:36:13 | 0:36:16
and to achieve liberation from dependence, | 0:36:16 | 0:36:20
whether material or psychological. | 0:36:20 | 0:36:24
This genuine independence is the essential pre-condition for living | 0:36:24 | 0:36:30
in an other-centred way, beyond ourselves. | 0:36:30 | 0:36:36
The word Margaret Thatcher used at St Lawrence Jewry | 0:36:36 | 0:36:39
was "interdependence". | 0:36:39 | 0:36:42
She referred to the Christian doctrine | 0:36:42 | 0:36:44
"that we are all members one of another, | 0:36:44 | 0:36:47
"expressed in the concept of the Church on Earth | 0:36:47 | 0:36:50
"as the Body of Christ. From this we learn our interdependence | 0:36:50 | 0:36:56
"and," as she said, "the great truth that we do not achieve | 0:36:56 | 0:37:01
"happiness or salvation in isolation from each other | 0:37:01 | 0:37:06
"but as members of Society." | 0:37:06 | 0:37:11
Her later remark about there being no such thing as "society" | 0:37:11 | 0:37:15
has been misunderstood and refers to some impersonal entity | 0:37:15 | 0:37:21
to which we are tempted to surrender our independence. | 0:37:21 | 0:37:27
It is entirely right that in the Dean's bidding | 0:37:27 | 0:37:30
there was a reference to "the life-long companionship | 0:37:30 | 0:37:33
"she enjoyed with Denis." As we all know, | 0:37:33 | 0:37:36
the manner of her leaving office was traumatic | 0:37:36 | 0:37:40
but the loss of Denis was a grievous blow indeed, | 0:37:40 | 0:37:45
and then there was a struggle with increasing debility | 0:37:45 | 0:37:50
from which she has now been liberated. | 0:37:50 | 0:37:55
The natural cycle leads inevitably to decay, | 0:37:55 | 0:37:59
but the dominant note of any Christian funeral service, | 0:37:59 | 0:38:03
after the sorrow and after the memories, is hope. | 0:38:03 | 0:38:09
It is almost as perplexing to identify the "real me" in life | 0:38:09 | 0:38:17
as it is in death. The atoms that make up our bodies | 0:38:17 | 0:38:21
are changing all the time, through wear and tear, | 0:38:21 | 0:38:25
eating and drinking. | 0:38:25 | 0:38:27
We are atomically distinct from what we were when we were young. | 0:38:27 | 0:38:35
What unites Margaret Roberts of Grantham | 0:38:35 | 0:38:39
with Baroness Thatcher of Kesteven; what constitutes her identity? | 0:38:39 | 0:38:47
The complex pattern of memories, aspirations and actions | 0:38:47 | 0:38:52
which make up a character were carried for a time | 0:38:52 | 0:38:56
by the atoms of her body, | 0:38:56 | 0:38:59
but we believe they are also stored up in the Cloud of God's being. | 0:38:59 | 0:39:07
In faithful relationships, when two people live together, | 0:39:07 | 0:39:10
they grow around one another and the one becomes a part of the other. | 0:39:10 | 0:39:16
We are given the freedom to be ourselves and, as human beings, | 0:39:16 | 0:39:20
to be drawn freely into an ever-closer relationship | 0:39:20 | 0:39:25
with the divine nature. | 0:39:25 | 0:39:29
Everything which has turned to love in our lives | 0:39:29 | 0:39:34
will be stored up in the memory of God. | 0:39:34 | 0:39:40
First there is the struggle for freedom and independence | 0:39:40 | 0:39:44
and then the self-giving and the acceptance of inter-dependence. | 0:39:44 | 0:39:51
In the gospel passage read by the Prime Minister, Jesus says, | 0:39:51 | 0:39:54
"I am the way, the truth, and the life". | 0:39:54 | 0:39:58
That "I am" is the voice of the divine being. | 0:39:58 | 0:40:03
Jesus does not bring information or mere advice | 0:40:03 | 0:40:09
but embodies the reality of divine love. | 0:40:09 | 0:40:13
God so loved the world that he was generous: | 0:40:13 | 0:40:17
he did not intervene from the outside but gave himself to us | 0:40:17 | 0:40:21
in the person of Jesus Christ, and became one of us. | 0:40:21 | 0:40:28
What, in the end, makes our lives seem valuable | 0:40:28 | 0:40:35
after the storm and stress have passed away | 0:40:35 | 0:40:39
and there is a great calm? | 0:40:39 | 0:40:43
The questions most frequently asked at such a time concern us all. | 0:40:43 | 0:40:49
How loving have I been? How faithful in personal relationships? | 0:40:49 | 0:40:56
Have I found joy within myself, | 0:40:56 | 0:41:01
or am I still looking for it in externals outside myself? | 0:41:01 | 0:41:09
Margaret Thatcher had a sense of this, | 0:41:09 | 0:41:12
which she expressed in her address | 0:41:12 | 0:41:14
to the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland: | 0:41:14 | 0:41:18
"I leave you with the earnest hope that may we all come nearer | 0:41:18 | 0:41:26
"to that other country whose 'ways are ways of gentleness | 0:41:26 | 0:41:32
" 'and all her paths are peace'. " | 0:41:32 | 0:41:39
TS Eliot, in the poem quoted in this service sheet, says: | 0:41:39 | 0:41:43
"the communication of the dead is tongued with fire | 0:41:43 | 0:41:49
"beyond the language of the living." | 0:41:49 | 0:41:53
In this Easter season Death is revealed, not as a full stop | 0:41:53 | 0:41:58
but as the way into another dimension of Life. | 0:41:58 | 0:42:03
As Eliot puts it: | 0:42:03 | 0:42:06
"What we call the beginning is often the end | 0:42:06 | 0:42:12
"And to make an end is to make a beginning. | 0:42:12 | 0:42:17
"The end is where we start from." | 0:42:17 | 0:42:27
0:42:27 | 0:42:27 | ||
Rest eternal grant unto her O Lord | 0:42:27 | 0:42:30
and let light perpetual shine upon her. | 0:42:30 | 0:42:40

# Lost in wonder Love, and praise! # | 0:44:57 | 0:45:07
0:45:07 | 0:45:14 | ||
Let us pray. | 0:45:14 | 0:45:24
0:45:24 | 0:45:26 | ||
Man that is born of a woman hath but a short time to live, | 0:45:26 | 0:45:32
and is full of misery. | 0:45:32 | 0:45:36
He cometh up, and is cut down, | 0:45:36 | 0:45:38
like a flower; | 0:45:38 | 0:45:40
He fleeth as it were a shadow, | 0:45:40 | 0:45:43
and never continueth in one stay. | 0:45:43 | 0:45:47
In the midst of life we are in death: | 0:45:47 | 0:45:52
Of whom may we seek for succour, but of thee, O Lord, | 0:45:52 | 0:45:58
who for our sins art justly displeased? | 0:45:58 | 0:46:04
Thou knowest, Lord, the secrets of our hearts; | 0:46:04 | 0:46:10
Shut not thy merciful ears to our prayer; but spare us | 0:46:10 | 0:46:16
Lord most holy, O God most mighty, O holy and merciful Saviour, | 0:46:16 | 0:46:26
0:46:26 | 0:46:28 | ||
Thou most worthy Judge eternal, suffer us not, at our last hour, | 0:46:28 | 0:46:35
for any pains of death, to fall from thee. | 0:46:35 | 0:46:42
Like as a father pitieth his own children: | 0:46:42 | 0:46:47
Even so is the Lord merciful unto them that fear him. | 0:46:47 | 0:46:54
For he knoweth whereof we are made: he remembereth that we are but dust. | 0:46:54 | 0:47:01
The days of man are but as grass: | 0:47:01 | 0:47:07
For he flourisheth as a flower of the field. | 0:47:07 | 0:47:12
For as soon as the wind goeth over it, it is gone: | 0:47:12 | 0:47:18
And the place thereof shall know it no more. | 0:47:18 | 0:47:23
But the merciful goodness of the Lord endureth | 0:47:23 | 0:47:28
For ever and ever upon them that fear him: | 0:47:28 | 0:47:33
And his righteousness upon children's children. | 0:47:33 | 0:47:43
O merciful God, the Father | 0:47:43 | 0:47:46
of our Lord Jesus Christ, | 0:47:46 | 0:47:49
Who is the resurrection and the life; | 0:47:49 | 0:47:52
In whom whosoever believeth shall live, | 0:47:52 | 0:47:55
Though he die; and whosoever liveth, and believeth in him, | 0:47:55 | 0:47:57
Shall not die eternally; Who also hath taught us, | 0:47:57 | 0:48:00
By his holy Apostle Saint Paul, not to be sorry, | 0:48:00 | 0:48:05
As men without hope, for them that sleep in him: | 0:48:05 | 0:48:10
We meekly beseech thee, O Father, to raise us from the death of sin | 0:48:10 | 0:48:14
when we shall depart this life, | 0:48:14 | 0:48:20
We may rest in him, as our hope is this our sister doth; | 0:48:20 | 0:48:27
and that, at the general Resurrection in the last day, | 0:48:27 | 0:48:31
We may be found acceptable in thy sight; and receive that blessing, | 0:48:31 | 0:48:36
which thy well-beloved Son shall then pronounce to all | 0:48:37 | 0:48:41
That love and fear thee, saying, | 0:48:41 | 0:48:44
Come, ye blessed children of my Father, | 0:48:44 | 0:48:48
Receive the kingdom prepared for you from the beginning of the world. | 0:48:48 | 0:48:53
Grant this we beseech thee, O merciful Father, | 0:48:53 | 0:48:57
Through Jesus Christ, our Mediator and Redeemer. | 0:48:57 | 0:49:01
Amen. | 0:49:01 | 0:49:08 | |
Almighty God, Father of all mercies | 0:49:08 | 0:49:11
and giver of all comfort: | 0:49:11 | 0:49:15
Deal graciously, we pray thee, with those who mourn, | 0:49:15 | 0:49:17
that casting every care on thee, | 0:49:17 | 0:49:20
they may know the consolation of thy love; | 0:49:20 | 0:49:24
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. | 0:49:24 | 0:49:32
O heavenly Father, | 0:49:32 | 0:49:36
who in thy Son Jesus Christ | 0:49:36 | 0:49:38
has given us a true faith, | 0:49:38 | 0:49:42
and a sure hope: help us, | 0:49:42 | 0:49:44
we pray thee, to live as those who believe and trust | 0:49:44 | 0:49:48
in the Communion of Saints, the forgiveness of sins, | 0:49:48 | 0:49:54
and the resurrection to life everlasting, | 0:49:54 | 0:49:59
and strengthen this faith and hope in us all the days of our life: | 0:49:59 | 0:50:06
through the love of thy Son, Jesus Christ our Saviour. | 0:50:06 | 0:50:12
Amen. | 0:50:12 | 0:50:22 | |
0:50:22 | 0:50:28 | ||
I heard a voice from heaven, saying unto me, | 0:50:28 | 0:50:31
write, from henceforth blessed are the dead which die in the Lord: | 0:50:31 | 0:50:34
Even so, saith the Spirit; for they rest from their labours. | 0:50:34 | 0:50:36
Now unto the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only wise God, | 0:50:36 | 0:50:41
be honour and glory for ever and ever. Amen. | 0:50:41 | 0:50:51
