with the Bidding given by The Very Reverend David Ison, the Dean of St

0:12:490:12:59
0:12:590:13:06

We come to this Cathedral today Margaret Hilda Thatcher, to give

0:13:060:13:09

and to commend her into God's hands. We recall with great gratitude

0:13:090:13:12

her leadership of this nation, her courage, her steadfastness,

0:13:120:13:14

and her resolve to accomplish what she believed to be right for

0:13:140:13:16

the common good. We remember the values by which she lived,

0:13:160:13:22

her diligence, her courtesy,

0:13:220:13:32
0:13:320:13:32

and her personal concern for the wellbeing of individuals.

0:13:320:13:37

And as we remember, so we rejoice in the lifelong companionship

0:13:370:13:42

she enjoyed with Denis, and we pray for her family and friends

0:13:420:13:48

and for all who mourn her passing. We continue to pray for this nation,

0:13:480:13:55

giving thanks for its traditions of freedom, for the rule of law

0:13:550:14:00

and for parliamentary democracy, remembering the part we have played

0:14:000:14:05

in peace and conflict over many centuries

0:14:050:14:09

and in all parts of the world; praying for all today who suffer

0:14:090:14:16

and sorrow in sickness, poverty, oppression or despair, that in

0:14:160:14:23

harmony and truth we may seek to be channels of Christ's faith,

0:14:230:14:29

hope and compassion to all the world;

0:14:290:14:34

joining our prayers together as we say:

0:14:340:14:40

Our Father, who art in heaven hallowed be thy name

0:14:400:14:44

Thy kingdom come; thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven

0:14:440:14:50

Give us this day our daily bread

0:14:500:14:53

And forgive us our trespasses

0:14:530:14:56

As we forgive those who trespass against us

0:14:560:15:00

And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil

0:15:000:15:04

For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory,

0:15:040:15:08

For ever and ever.

0:15:080:15:10

Amen.

0:16:500:17:00
0:17:000:17:18

Finally, my brethren,

0:17:180:17:21

be strong in the Lord,

0:17:210:17:24

and in the power of his might.

0:17:240:17:28

Put on the whole armour of God,

0:17:280:17:31

that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.

0:17:310:17:37

For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities,

0:17:370:17:46

against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world,

0:17:460:17:54

against spiritual wickedness in high places.

0:17:540:17:59

Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God,

0:18:000:18:06

that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all,

0:18:060:18:12

to stand. Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth,

0:18:120:18:21

and having on the breastplate of righteousness;

0:18:210:18:27

And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace;

0:18:270:18:34

Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able

0:18:340:18:41

to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.

0:18:410:18:46

And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit,

0:18:460:18:52

which is the word of God:

0:18:520:18:57

Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit,

Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me.

0:21:490:21:53

In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so,

0:21:540:21:59

I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.

0:21:590:22:06

And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again

0:22:060:22:11

And receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.

0:22:110:22:20

I am the way, the truth and the life:

0:28:400:28:50
0:28:500:28:57

The storm of conflicting opinions the Mrs Thatcher who became a

0:28:570:29:02

But today the remains of the real Margaret Hilda Thatcher

0:29:020:29:08

are here at her funeral service. Lying here, she is one of us,

0:29:080:29:15

subject to the common destiny of all human beings.

0:29:150:29:21

There is an important place for debating policies and legacy;

0:29:210:29:27

for assessing the impact of political decisions

0:29:270:29:31

on the everyday lives of individuals and communities.

0:29:310:29:35

Parliament held a frank debate last week -

0:29:350:29:39

but here and today is neither the time nor the place.

0:29:390:29:46

This, at Lady Thatcher's personal request, is a funeral service,

0:29:460:29:52

not a memorial service with the customary eulogies.

0:29:520:29:57

At such a time, the parson should not aspire to the judgments

0:29:580:30:03

which are proper to the politician;

0:30:030:30:07

instead, this is a place for ordinary human compassion

0:30:070:30:12

of the kind that is reconciling.

0:30:120:30:15

It is also the place for the simple truths

0:30:150:30:19

which transcend political debate.

0:30:190:30:23

And above all it is the place for hope.

0:30:230:30:29

But it must be very difficult for those members of her family,

0:30:290:30:33

and those closely associated with her,

0:30:330:30:37

to recognise the wife, mother and grandmother

0:30:370:30:42

in the mythological figure.

0:30:420:30:46

Our hearts go out to Mark and Carol and their families,

0:30:460:30:52

and also to those who cared for Lady Thatcher with such devotion,

0:30:520:30:58

especially in her later years.

0:30:580:31:01

One thing that everyone has noted is the courtesy and personal kindness

0:31:010:31:05

which she showed to those who worked for her,

0:31:050:31:09

as well as her capacity to reach out to the young,

0:31:090:31:13

in the world's eyes, "important".

0:31:130:31:19

The letter from a young boy early on in her time as Prime Minister

0:31:190:31:23

is a typical example. Nine-year-old David wrote to say:

0:31:230:31:28

"Last night when we were saying prayers,

0:31:280:31:32

"my daddy said everyone has done wrong things except Jesus."

0:31:320:31:38

And I said, "I don't think you have done bad things

0:31:380:31:42

"because you are the Prime Minister. Am I right or is my daddy?"

0:31:420:31:50

Perhaps the most remarkable thing is that the Prime Minister replied

0:31:500:31:54

in her own hand in a very straightforward letter

0:31:540:31:57

which took the question seriously. And she said:

0:31:570:32:01

"However good we try to be, we can never be as kind,

0:32:010:32:05

"gentle and wise as Jesus. There will be times when we do or say

0:32:050:32:11

"some thing we wish we hadn't done and we shall be sorry

0:32:110:32:15

"and try not to do it again."

0:32:150:32:18

She was always reaching out

0:32:180:32:20

and trying to help in typically un-coded terms.

0:32:200:32:26

I was once sitting next to her at some City function.

0:32:260:32:30

In the midst of describing

0:32:300:32:32

how Hayek's Road To Serfdom had influenced her thinking,

0:32:320:32:36

she suddenly grasped my wrist and said very emphatically,

0:32:370:32:42

"Don't touch the duck pate, Bishop - it's very fattening."

0:32:420:32:52
0:32:520:32:53

She described her own religious upbringing in a lecture she gave

0:32:530:32:56

in the nearby church of St Lawrence Jewry:

0:32:560:33:00

"We often went to church twice on Sundays,

0:33:000:33:02

"as well as on other occasions during the week.

0:33:020:33:05

"We were taught there always to make up our own minds

0:33:050:33:08

"and never take the easy way of following the crowd."

0:33:080:33:13

Her upbringing of course was in the Methodism

0:33:130:33:15

to which this country owes a huge debt.

0:33:150:33:19

When it was time to challenge the political and economic status quo

0:33:190:33:23

in 19th-century Britain,

0:33:230:33:26

it was so often the Methodists who took the lead.

0:33:260:33:31

The Tolpuddle Martyrs, for example, were led not by proto-Marxists

0:33:310:33:35

but by Methodist lay preachers.

0:33:350:33:39

Today's first lesson describes the struggle

0:33:390:33:42

with the principalities and powers.

0:33:420:33:45

Perseverance in struggle and the courage to be

0:33:450:33:49

were characteristic of Margaret Thatcher.

0:33:490:33:52

In a setting like this,

0:33:520:33:54

in the presence of the leaders of the nation,

0:33:540:34:00

it is easy to forget the immense hurdles she had to climb.

0:34:000:34:06

Beginning in the upper floors

0:34:060:34:08

of her father's grocer's shop in Grantham,

0:34:080:34:11

through Oxford as a scientist and, later,

0:34:110:34:13

as part of the team that invented Mr Whippy ice cream,

0:34:130:34:17

s

0:34:170:34:21

By the time she entered Parliament in 1959

0:34:210:34:25

she was part of a cohort of only 4% of women in the House of Commons.

0:34:250:34:32

She had experienced many rebuffs along the way,

0:34:320:34:36

often on the short list for candidates only to be disqualified

0:34:360:34:40

by prejudice against a woman - and, worse, a woman with children.

0:34:400:34:47

She applied herself to her work with formidable energy and passion

0:34:470:34:51

and continued to reflect on how faith and politics

0:34:520:34:56

related to one another.

0:34:560:34:59

In the Lawrence Jewry lecture she said that:

0:34:590:35:01

"Christianity offers no easy solutions

0:35:010:35:04

"to political and economic issues.

0:35:040:35:09

"It teaches us that we cannot achieve a compassionate society

0:35:090:35:13

"simply by passing new laws

0:35:130:35:16

"and appointing more staff to administer them."

0:35:160:35:20

She was very aware that there are prior dispositions

0:35:200:35:25

which are needed to make market economics

0:35:250:35:30

and democratic institutions function well:

0:35:300:35:35

the habits of truth-telling, mutual sympathy,

0:35:350:35:39

and the capacity to co-operate. These dispositions are incubated

0:35:390:35:46

a

0:35:460:35:51

In her words, "The basic ties of the family

0:35:510:35:55

"are at the heart of our society and are the nursery of civic virtue".

0:35:550:36:02

Such moral and spiritual capital is accumulated over many generations

0:36:020:36:08

but can be easily eroded.

0:36:080:36:13

Life is a struggle to make the right choices

0:36:130:36:16

and to achieve liberation from dependence,

0:36:160:36:20

whether material or psychological.

0:36:200:36:24

This genuine independence is the essential pre-condition for living

0:36:240:36:30

in an other-centred way, beyond ourselves.

0:36:300:36:36

The word Margaret Thatcher used at St Lawrence Jewry

0:36:360:36:39

was "interdependence".

0:36:390:36:42

She referred to the Christian doctrine

0:36:420:36:44

"that we are all members one of another,

0:36:440:36:47

"expressed in the concept of the Church on Earth

0:36:470:36:50

"as the Body of Christ. From this we learn our interdependence

0:36:500:36:56

"and," as she said, "the great truth that we do not achieve

0:36:560:37:01

"happiness or salvation in isolation from each other

0:37:010:37:06

"but as members of Society."

0:37:060:37:11

Her later remark about there being no such thing as "society"

0:37:110:37:15

has been misunderstood and refers to some impersonal entity

0:37:150:37:21

to which we are tempted to surrender our independence.

0:37:210:37:27

It is entirely right that in the Dean's bidding

0:37:270:37:30

there was a reference to "the life-long companionship

0:37:300:37:33

"she enjoyed with Denis." As we all know,

0:37:330:37:36

the manner of her leaving office was traumatic

0:37:360:37:40

but the loss of Denis was a grievous blow indeed,

0:37:400:37:45

and then there was a struggle with increasing debility

0:37:450:37:50

from which she has now been liberated.

0:37:500:37:55

The natural cycle leads inevitably to decay,

0:37:550:37:59

but the dominant note of any Christian funeral service,

0:37:590:38:03

after the sorrow and after the memories, is hope.

0:38:030:38:09

It is almost as perplexing to identify the "real me" in life

0:38:090:38:17

as it is in death. The atoms that make up our bodies

0:38:170:38:21

are changing all the time, through wear and tear,

0:38:210:38:25

eating and drinking.

0:38:250:38:27

We are atomically distinct from what we were when we were young.

0:38:270:38:35

What unites Margaret Roberts of Grantham

0:38:350:38:39

with Baroness Thatcher of Kesteven; what constitutes her identity?

0:38:390:38:47

The complex pattern of memories, aspirations and actions

0:38:470:38:52

which make up a character were carried for a time

0:38:520:38:56

by the atoms of her body,

0:38:560:38:59

but we believe they are also stored up in the Cloud of God's being.

0:38:590:39:07

In faithful relationships, when two people live together,

0:39:070:39:10

they grow around one another and the one becomes a part of the other.

0:39:100:39:16

We are given the freedom to be ourselves and, as human beings,

0:39:160:39:20

to be drawn freely into an ever-closer relationship

0:39:200:39:25

with the divine nature.

0:39:250:39:29

Everything which has turned to love in our lives

0:39:290:39:34

will be stored up in the memory of God.

0:39:340:39:40

First there is the struggle for freedom and independence

0:39:400:39:44

and then the self-giving and the acceptance of inter-dependence.

0:39:440:39:51

In the gospel passage read by the Prime Minister, Jesus says,

0:39:510:39:54

"I am the way, the truth, and the life".

0:39:540:39:58

That "I am" is the voice of the divine being.

0:39:580:40:03

Jesus does not bring information or mere advice

0:40:030:40:09

but embodies the reality of divine love.

0:40:090:40:13

God so loved the world that he was generous:

0:40:130:40:17

he did not intervene from the outside but gave himself to us

0:40:170:40:21

in the person of Jesus Christ, and became one of us.

0:40:210:40:28

What, in the end, makes our lives seem valuable

0:40:280:40:35

after the storm and stress have passed away

0:40:350:40:39

and there is a great calm?

0:40:390:40:43

The questions most frequently asked at such a time concern us all.

0:40:430:40:49

How loving have I been? How faithful in personal relationships?

0:40:490:40:56

Have I found joy within myself,

0:40:560:41:01

or am I still looking for it in externals outside myself?

0:41:010:41:09

Margaret Thatcher had a sense of this,

0:41:090:41:12

which she expressed in her address

0:41:120:41:14

to the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland:

0:41:140:41:18

"I leave you with the earnest hope that may we all come nearer

0:41:180:41:26

"to that other country whose 'ways are ways of gentleness

0:41:260:41:32

" 'and all her paths are peace'. "

0:41:320:41:39

TS Eliot, in the poem quoted in this service sheet, says:

0:41:390:41:43

"the communication of the dead is tongued with fire

0:41:430:41:49

"beyond the language of the living."

0:41:490:41:53

In this Easter season Death is revealed, not as a full stop

0:41:530:41:58

but as the way into another dimension of Life.

0:41:580:42:03

As Eliot puts it:

0:42:030:42:06

"What we call the beginning is often the end

0:42:060:42:12

"And to make an end is to make a beginning.

0:42:120:42:17

"The end is where we start from."

0:42:170:42:27
0:42:270:42:27

Rest eternal grant unto her O Lord

0:42:270:42:30

and let light perpetual shine upon her.

0:42:300:42:40
0:42:400:42:47

Now one of Lady Thatcher's favourites,

0:42:470:42:47

favourites, the

0:42:470:42:48

favourites, the hymn

0:42:480:42:48

favourites, the hymn Love

0:42:480:42:58
0:42:580:43:05

favourites, the hymn Love Divine, # Love Divine, all loves excelling

0:43:050:43:15
0:43:150:43:29

# Jesu, thou art all compassion Pure unbounded love thou art

0:43:290:43:39
0:43:390:43:43

# Visit us with thy salvation Enter every trembling heart

0:43:430:43:53
0:43:530:44:09

# Finish then thy new creation Pure and spotless let us be

0:44:090:44:18

# Let us see thy great salvation Perfectly restored in thee

0:44:180:44:28
0:44:280:44:33

# Changed from glory into glory Till in heaven we take our place

0:44:330:44:43
0:44:430:44:49

# Till we cast our crowns before thee

0:44:490:44:57

# Lost in wonder Love, and praise! #

0:44:570:45:07
0:45:070:45:14

Let us pray.

0:45:140:45:24
0:45:240:45:26

Man that is born of a woman hath but a short time to live,

0:45:260:45:32

and is full of misery.

0:45:320:45:36

He cometh up, and is cut down,

0:45:360:45:38

like a flower;

0:45:380:45:40

He fleeth as it were a shadow,

0:45:400:45:43

and never continueth in one stay.

0:45:430:45:47

In the midst of life we are in death:

0:45:470:45:52

Of whom may we seek for succour, but of thee, O Lord,

0:45:520:45:58

who for our sins art justly displeased?

0:45:580:46:04

Thou knowest, Lord, the secrets of our hearts;

0:46:040:46:10

Shut not thy merciful ears to our prayer; but spare us

0:46:100:46:16

Lord most holy, O God most mighty, O holy and merciful Saviour,

0:46:160:46:26
0:46:260:46:28

Thou most worthy Judge eternal, suffer us not, at our last hour,

0:46:280:46:35

for any pains of death, to fall from thee.

0:46:350:46:42

Like as a father pitieth his own children:

0:46:420:46:47

Even so is the Lord merciful unto them that fear him.

0:46:470:46:54

For he knoweth whereof we are made: he remembereth that we are but dust.

0:46:540:47:01

The days of man are but as grass:

0:47:010:47:07

For he flourisheth as a flower of the field.

0:47:070:47:12

For as soon as the wind goeth over it, it is gone:

0:47:120:47:18

And the place thereof shall know it no more.

0:47:180:47:23

But the merciful goodness of the Lord endureth

0:47:230:47:28

For ever and ever upon them that fear him:

0:47:280:47:33

And his righteousness upon children's children.

0:47:330:47:43

O merciful God, the Father

0:47:430:47:46

of our Lord Jesus Christ,

0:47:460:47:49

Who is the resurrection and the life;

0:47:490:47:52

In whom whosoever believeth shall live,

0:47:520:47:55

Though he die; and whosoever liveth, and believeth in him,

0:47:550:47:57

Shall not die eternally; Who also hath taught us,

0:47:570:48:00

By his holy Apostle Saint Paul, not to be sorry,

0:48:000:48:05

As men without hope, for them that sleep in him:

0:48:050:48:10

We meekly beseech thee, O Father, to raise us from the death of sin

0:48:100:48:14

when we shall depart this life,

0:48:140:48:20

We may rest in him, as our hope is this our sister doth;

0:48:200:48:27

and that, at the general Resurrection in the last day,

0:48:270:48:31

We may be found acceptable in thy sight; and receive that blessing,

0:48:310:48:36

which thy well-beloved Son shall then pronounce to all

0:48:370:48:41

That love and fear thee, saying,

0:48:410:48:44

Come, ye blessed children of my Father,

0:48:440:48:48

Receive the kingdom prepared for you from the beginning of the world.

0:48:480:48:53

Grant this we beseech thee, O merciful Father,

0:48:530:48:57

Through Jesus Christ, our Mediator and Redeemer.

0:48:570:49:01

Amen.

0:49:010:49:08

Almighty God, Father of all mercies

0:49:080:49:11

and giver of all comfort:

0:49:110:49:15

Deal graciously, we pray thee, with those who mourn,

0:49:150:49:17

that casting every care on thee,

0:49:170:49:20

they may know the consolation of thy love;

0:49:200:49:24

through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

0:49:240:49:32

O heavenly Father,

0:49:320:49:36

who in thy Son Jesus Christ

0:49:360:49:38

has given us a true faith,

0:49:380:49:42

and a sure hope: help us,

0:49:420:49:44

we pray thee, to live as those who believe and trust

0:49:440:49:48

in the Communion of Saints, the forgiveness of sins,

0:49:480:49:54

and the resurrection to life everlasting,

0:49:540:49:59

and strengthen this faith and hope in us all the days of our life:

0:49:590:50:06

through the love of thy Son, Jesus Christ our Saviour.

0:50:060:50:12

Amen.

0:50:120:50:22
0:50:220:50:28

I heard a voice from heaven, saying unto me,

0:50:280:50:31

write, from henceforth blessed are the dead which die in the Lord:

0:50:310:50:34

Even so, saith the Spirit; for they rest from their labours.

0:50:340:50:36

Now unto the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only wise God,

0:50:360:50:41

be honour and glory for ever and ever. Amen.

0:50:410:50:51
0:50:510:51:04

# I vow to thee, my country All earthly things above

0:51:050:51:12

# Entire and whole and perfect The service of my love

0:51:120:51:22
0:51:220:51:24

# The love that asks no question The love that stands the test

0:51:240:51:34
0:51:340:51:34

# That lays upon the altar the dearest and the best

0:51:340:51:44
0:51:440:51:46

# The love that never falters The love that pays the price

0:51:460:51:56
0:51:560:51:57

# The love that makes undaunted the final sacrifice

0:51:570:52:07
0:52:070:52:14

# And there's another country I've heard of long ago

0:52:140:52:24

# Most dear to them that love her Most great to them that know

0:52:240:52:34
0:52:340:52:36

# We may not count her armies We may not see her King

0:52:360:52:46
0:52:460:52:47

# Her fortress is a faithful heart Her pride is suffering

0:52:470:52:57
0:52:570:52:59

# And soul by soul and silently her shining bounds increase

0:52:590:53:09
0:53:090:53:11

# And her ways are ways of gentleness

0:53:110:53:17

# And all her paths are peace. #

0:53:170:53:27
0:53:270:53:32

Go forth upon thy journey from this world, O Christian soul

0:53:320:53:38

Go in the name of God the Father Almighty who created thee

0:53:380:53:43

In the name of Jesus Christ his son who suffered for thee

0:53:430:53:48

In the name of the Holy Spirit who strengthened thee

0:53:480:53:51

Aided by angels and archangels

0:53:510:53:55

And all the armies of the heavenly host

0:53:550:53:58

May thy portion this day be in peace

0:53:580:54:03

And thy dwelling place in the heavenly Jerusalem.

0:54:130:54:21

Support us, O Lord, all the day long of this troublous life,

0:54:210:54:26

until the shadows lengthen and the evening comes,

0:54:260:54:30

the busy world is hushed, the fever o

0:54:300:54:38

Then, Lord, in your mercy grant us a safe lodging, a holy rest,

0:54:380:54:45

and peace at the last, through Christ our Lord. Amen.

0:54:450:54:55
0:54:550:54:59

Now unto him that is able to keep us from falling,

0:54:590:55:03

and to present us faultless before the presence of his glory

0:55:030:55:07

with exceeding joy, to the only wise God our Saviour,

0:55:070:55:11

be glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now and for ever.

0:55:110:55:18

And the blessing of God Almighty,

0:55:180:55:21

the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit be with you

0:55:210:55:27

and remain with you this day and always. Amen.
