frightening flight. A United Airlines plane hits wild turbulence.

A flight attendant and a passenger fly up and hit the ceiling. A mother

loses her grip on her child. Is there a safer way to fly with

children? A city on fire. Does Vladimir Putin has an insurrection

at his door during the Olympics? All those potholes. 100,001 state alone.

Good evening. We begin with those harrowing moments on board a

commercial flight in this country. Extreme turbulence sent passengers

flying. One flight attendant is still hospitalised tonight after

hitting the cabin ceiling. How is the investigation going? Just as the

United Airlines aircraft was starting its descent into Montana,

there was a jolt. It felt like something came up from the bottom

and hit the bottom of the plane. It was severe turbulence and those not

buckled in word tossed about. He hit the ceiling of the aircraft and

landed on the lady next to him. The aircraft seemed to fall for nearly

five seconds. As this simulation shows, there was a mother who lost

control of her child. The baby ended up in the air, landing on another

seat, luckily unhurt. It's impossible to hold a child during

high turbulence. A child can be pulled from their parent's grasp.

The baby's weight can triple during the event and we are not strong

enough. There is one approved restraint for aircraft and you can

use a car seat. Turbulence is a common occurrence but it can happen

without warning. Those who are usually injured are crewmembers. On

average, there are 32 injuries every year and 66% of those are two crew

members, often flight attendants. The captain had to declare a medical

emergency. To my right was the stewardess. She went flying back and

forth. One flight attendant is hospitalised tonight in a serious

condition. Two passengers were treated and released after that

violent light through turbulent air. The unexpected turbulence is why

flight crews suggest you always keep your seatbelt buckled.

Overseas, the fire and protest raging right on Russia's doorstep. A

giant city in flames, even as Vladimir Putin tries to put on his

best face during the Olympics. Kiev is burning tonight. Flaming tyres,

fireworks and the smell of tear gas. Security forces pushed into the

centre to drive out protesters. Opposition leader Vitali Klitschko,

once a world champion boxer, is tonight in the fight of his life. He

is calling the heart of this city and island of freedom. Today, it was

a sea of anger. Demonstrators armed themselves with bricks and fought

with columns of police, backed by water cannon. They claimed advantage

on rooftops and beat the men in uniform. Sometimes, we saw mercy.

Sometimes, it was brute force. On both sides, they suffered

casualties. At least 13 are dead. Just weeks ago, we witnessed a

disciplined and determined rising. These fortifications are impressive.

This barrier has gone up and they are still reinforcing it with sand

bags packed with ice. The front line has moved now but it's clear that

they are ready. These are their home-made shields. Through here, a

wall of tyres ready for them to satellite if the police just over

their attack. This is a giant but divided country. Hardened protesters

want to side with Europe but the president wants to side with

Vladimir Putin. Violence here reveals America and Russia are

squaring off on opposite sides, inflaming old and bitter divisions.

This is now a test of wills between Russia and the West. It was always

thought Moscow would call for restraint during the Olympics but

make no mistake, Vladimir Putin is not backing down. The big thaw is

under way and that means the ice is on the move. Ice is falling off

groups and onto steps. After that, all the potholes like craters in the

street. Tonight another storm sweeping

through the north-east. Whiteout conditions in Pennsylvania so bad

this armoured truck flipped over. In Chicago, this car was stuck on icy

tracks and get struck by a train. Miraculous that the driver walked

away, unhurt. A carport collapsed in Pennsylvania with rescue crews

having to cut through the route to pull the driver to safety. In New

Jersey they are using metal detectors to hunt down buried by

hydrants. So many cities and towns are hitting their breaking point.

This man is using a blowtorch to melt ice. In New Jersey, a dire salt

shortage. You have been without salt for two weeks? Yes we have some

arrived yesterday. So many slow has been under plough. And now there are

more problems in Jersey City where snow-covered cars are going to be

getting tickets if they are not moved by tomorrow. I tried for two

hours to get the ice underneath to get out but it is impossible. But

hopefully won't drive into the potholes that have formed. Jersey

filling double what they did last year. New York, 100,000 since

January. Experts say that hitting eight pothole can be like a 35 mile

car crash. The warmup is brief. We have a shot of very cold air coming

back into the east and midwest in next week. Here in New Jersey, the

transport chief is warning that the State may have to shut down the

new trouble that the states have made some of it legal. They have so

much inventory and cash they have become one stop shopping for

thieves. It is the dark stuff of Colorado's

legal marijuana trade. Thieves hunting for cash and stealing pot

plants worth thousands. Christie Kelly has been hit three times by

burglars. I feel very paranoid like I am always looking over my

shoulder. She has turned her business into a fortress. There are

nine cameras and those are just the ones I can see. Banks keep cutting

her down because the Federal government still considers marijuana

illegal. She deals only in cash, no checks or credit cards. Marijuana

shops are now turning to heavily armed private security. Every month,

Ted Daniels and his guards move cash in huge amount. We don't like to see

how much our clients have. As former military and ex- cops watch, armed

Justice Department just issued new guidelines meant to reassure banks

they will not face legal trouble for doing business with the marijuana
