World News. Welcome to the programme. Tonight, breaking news

from Homeland Security. A new warning about the possibility shoe

bombs. Could there be a breakthrough in Ukraine? Do all these women need

Caesarean sections? What are the dangers? And what could you do with

75,000 Lego blocks? One man's astonishing answer. Good evening.

There is a new terror warning and this one is something of a flashback

to the past. Acting on new intelligence, the US government says

airline security should be on the lookout for explosives contained in

footwear and cosmetics. Tonight, Homeland Security officials

are warning airlines that explosives hidden in footwear are an ongoing

threat. Terrorists are building shoe bombs containing liquid explosives

and also explosives hidden in cosmetic cases. The new intelligence

suggests that the terrorist bomb makers are fixated on these efforts.

Al-Qaeda is still fascinated with taking down planes. We recently had

that toothpaste scare. Now we are going back to footwear. It comes

after a warning that explosives could be hidden in toothpaste

containers on flights heading to the Sochi Olympics. It comes 12 years

after Richard Green was caught on a US bound flight, trying to light his

footwear. The bomb could have taken down a plane carrying 197. The

incident changed airline security forever. To this day, passengers

must always take off their shoes so they can be screened. Only weeks

ago, Congress held hearings on whether the continued concern was

overkill. Everything we have done is in reaction. Take off your shoes.

That was in reaction. Liquids. It's all reacted. Pretty soon, we will be

going through their naked. Given this latest scare... Do you think we

will see heightened security tomorrow morning? Sources tell me

that they will be doing business as usual but they may see additional

security at airports because law enforcement officials want to show

that they are taking this very seriously. But again ranking it in

terms of the intelligence and the specificity of that intelligence?

This came from credible sources and they want to get it out to airlines

as as possible and to the TSA so that everyone is on notice so that

the terrorists are still thinking about these plans to take planes out

of the sky. Now to the heart of chaos in Ukraine. Tonight, Ukraine

is in ruins and a bloody battle is playing out on the ground amid

reports of a truce coming out tonight. Yes, that truce was

announced by President Yanukovych late tonight one after he said that

-- scent of those security forces into the square behind me,

triggering an intense battle. All day and into the night, downtown

Kiev smouldered and burned. This city and the world still shaken by

the terrible scenes that flashed through here yesterday. Protesters

shot down. Leased lines of flame. The deadline in the streets. But

this afternoon, when we clambered over the barricades into

Independence Square, we found thousands of ordinary Ukrainians

gathered again, young and old, men and women, undeterred and undaunted.

They say they want freedom and democracy. This is our last chance.

If we retreat, everything will be broken. Will this country of 46

million people turned west towards the US and EU and democracy or

East, to Vladimir Putin and Russia, which brought here for centuries.

President Yanukovych, who was elected in 2010 but who now stands

accused by opponents of massive corruption and unleashing secret

police on protesters, chose Moscow. The US is pushing back. There will

be consequences if people stepped over the line, that includes the

Ukrainian military not stepping into what should be a set of issues that

could be resolved by civilians. In Kiev, they are bracing for the

worst. This is the front line. Protesters here and on the other

side, the police. They are armed for battle here with their weapon of

choice, the stones they have torn from the pavements. Everyone pitches

in out here. There is plenty of food. Handmade sandwiches brought

from home. And the beautiful cathedral of Saint Michael is a

makeshift hospital, treating the injured. Morale on the barricades is

still high. As dusk drew down, they rose and sang the Ukrainian national

anthem. The words of the chorus dash souls and bodies we will lay down

all for our freedom. They mean it. This is a nation on a knife edge

looking over into an abyss of possible civil war. Can this truce

holds? The protesters are demanding new elections. The president is

refusing and the bloodshed has radicalised both sides. Thank you.

Now, the weather back at home. Tornadoes are roaring in behind the

blizzards. With the mild comes the wild.

In a Manhattan, eyes is falling from the sky. -- ice. It is crashing onto

the street and sidewalks below. In Chicago, the same. In the

north-east, a blast of winter before the store. In Pennsylvania, a scene

we sought to often this winter. A pile-up on the highway. Freezing

rain caused unfortunate vehicle wrecks. Before we celebrate the

brief touch offspring, the reality of a fast snow melting, causing

damage. There are fears of flooding. Almost a third of the nation has

been covered with rapid snow. This could mean trouble. In New York

City, the major flood threat is in the west. At least seven states have

flood watch warnings. Then we have the severe weather. Tonight, in

eastern Kansas and south-west Missouri. It will explode into the

evening. The areas in red could see damaging winds and isolated

tornadoes. We move on to a new warning from

some of the nation's top doctors. Are too many babies being born by

Caesarean section in America? Is it necessary? Is it something else? Our

correspondent has more. And alarming number. One in three

women disbursed in America through the section. -- Caesarean section.

That number is too high. It can be a life-saving procedure. But a report

says the often, they are not needed. There are real surgical risks like

infection and severe bleeding. This woman suffered after what she now

feels and unnecessary Caesarean section. My injuries didn't heal. I

was not able to breastfeed. I had postpartum depression. Many women

who have had Caesarean section will have higher risks of serious

problems like death. We live in the reality of litigation. Sometimes,

obstetricians are leaning towards Caesarean sections. If this is done,

and OK. I have had patients who have come in and said, I would rather

have Caesarean section. GPs will exhaust all options and resort to

Caesarean section only when needed. The goal is the healthy birth of a

baby and a healthy mother. A competition of its own back in

America. A jackpot. Our correspondent has more.

It has rolled over more than a dozen times in 2013. Tonight, the

Powerball jackpot. The six largest in US history. It could be a

record-breaking year. We could easily hit the $1 billion mark.

Massive jackpots has become the new normal. This particular jackpot is

taking longer to grow. As a result of the extreme weather, fewer people

were venturing out as are enough to buy tickets. Even with one in 175

million odds, Powerball officials say the excitement is overshadowing

the weather. Next, how to fight the epidemic of

drug tragedies. Many families are trying to revive the crusade of an

anguished father. You sleaze Ball. We are going to get you. Parents are

trying to target the drug dealers tonight.

Next, we have seen stories in relation to the epidemic of drug

tragedies. What can be done? Tonight, we take a closer look. What

happens if drug dealers are charged with murder if there is a death from

the drug? Our correspondent has more.

After the death of Philip Seymour Hoffman, police acting on a tip

arrested this man. He has been charged with heroin possession than

a connection with the death. He pledged not guilty. We may not know

who supplied the drugs who killed the Oscar winner. No crime was

committed, police say. But with harrowing news and as it is

skyrocketing, many other finding ways to punish those who supply

drugs. This man lost his son to suicide related to drug use. He

demanded accountability from the man he said supplied the drugs. You

sleazeball. We are going to get you. He wants to pass a law to see for

reimbursement of medical rehabilitation costs. I had people

say, you cannot blame the drug dealer for what we choose to do to

ourselves. They might be an accessory but you cannot blame them.

There are partners in crime. A partner in murder. Some prosecutors

are calling it a crime. Like this person in New Jersey. It is not just

drug dealer but supplier or manufacturer. Everyone up the chain

could be charged with first degree drug abuse death in New Jersey. He

is using a statute. That could lead drug dealers in jail for 30 years.

Prosecutors around the country are finding creative ways to show drug

dealers that they mean business. The leaders of Facebook will pay $19

billion for a start-up called WhatsApp. The biggest acquisition

ever for Facebook. It lets you text anywhere in the world for free. The

company has 55 employees. Facebook will pay $345 million for every

worker. We want to show you something a

charity has issued. An experiment in empathy. A little boy shivering in

the cold. He is an actor. As the cameras roll, one after the other,

people offer him gloves and scarves and pays off their back. Wake up to

needy children all around us. Finally, a new solution to an old

problem. Go in the dark antlers reindeer. Big blue sprays on and
