Time now for a look at the news as seen across the United States a

couple of hours ago, in ABC World News with Dianne Sawyer. Welcome to

ABC World News. A dramatic change in the search for the missing plane.

We are there as anguished families arrived, demanding answers. News of

the massive recall of 10 million Toyota cars. Tonight, the company

admits misleading customers and pays one of the largest fines in history.

Why other women in your family twice as likely as the man develop

Alzheimer's disease? The new twist in the seven`year for Madeleine

McCann. `` search for Madeleine McCann. Good evening. We have news

on the search for MH 370. The leading edge of the search has

narrowed, zeroing in on two sections of ocean. The hunt is on so let's go

to our correspondent. Show us the change. We were talking about the

search area covering 2.4 square nautical miles. Now it is off

Australia, where US officials are focusing. Experts from the NTSB have

refined satellite signals from the aircraft. They have created two

possible parts that go right through the street in search area and have

cut the size of the search area from the size of Texas, in half. These

search planes have narrowed their focus. Two possible parts. A flight

from Malaysia to the South Pole, ending off Australia. Why here?

Because hourly satellite signals from the jet had yielded far more

clues than anyone expected. Calculations by experts have been

handed over to the Australians to help in the search. The area at the

end of those parts has been refined by the NTSB. We know more about the

aircraft and its fuel reserves. The US new high`tech plane is also

focusing here. The FBI has been asked to help in the investigation

of the pilots, at least when it comes to their homes in later.

Waiting for a week to confiscate the machinery, the Malaysians say that

they were deleted files on the computer. This is a bit of a race

because the batteries in the blacks `` black box recorders only last for

40 days. We have already lost 12 days.

From the families of the missing, deep emotion. Our correspondent is

there. The anguished cries of a mother, raw

proof of families at breaking point. Where is my son, she cries. Give me

an answer. Today she joined 20 family members protesting the daily

Malaysia news conference, accusing officials of lying. They are doing

nothing, this woman screams. The scene descended into chaos as the

families were dragged out of sight. That mother was screaming one word

`why a? Malaysia and officials have been defending the investigation. We

are trying our very best. It is hard. It is heart`wrenching for me.

The brother of an American passenger today told us...

Philip Wood worked in Malaysia. His desk is now covered with hundreds of

origami birds. His workers are not giving up hope. The families here

feel exactly the same way. They're begging the world not to forget

their children and also they are pressuring the government to get

them home as fast as they can. Thank you. Now we turn to our aviation

consultant. With this production `` reduction in the search area, is it

doable? Yes. The search area is smaller but it is still such an

unbelievably large part of the ocean. It will take weeks still just

to look at this smaller search area. Kendo search planes see deep into

ocean? No. The planes cannot see under the ocean, so if we find

something it will have to be on the surface, still floating. Perhaps the

radar consists in reflection, but it has to be on top of the water. They

cannot see into the ocean. This is 15,000 feet deep and there are some

trenches there that are 20,000 feet deep. Hellfire can the signal from

the black box be heard? Five or ten miles away. If it is at the bottom

of the ocean and several miles below the ocean then you have to be almost

right on top of it. That is why it is important to get the wreckage as

soon as we can and get a ship out there so we can try to hear these

signals before the battery gives out. The race continues. Thank you.

We move on now. The dramatic conclusion to a story with us

pro`Kiev. The harrowing descriptions of families trapped inside runaway

cars. Tonight, to go to the maker of those cars, has agreed to pay $1.2

billion as a penalty. It was a series of horrific accidents that

put fear in the hearts of drivers. Sudden, unintended acceleration in

some theatre and Lexus vehicles was killing people on the highways. Four

people died in at 2009 crash and a wave of reports about runaway Toyota

cars sparked an investigation. In today's settlement with the Justice

Department, Kyoto admitted that it misled US consumers by concealing

and making deceptive statements about unintended acceleration.

Theatre confronted a public safety emergency as if it were a public

relations problem. The Justice Department says that theatre first

lamed driver error, then they admitted that floor mats could trap

the gas pedal. But in January 2010, our reporter Ed the story of a

runaway Toyota car in New Jersey that could not be blamed on either

the driver or the floor mats. It's just took off. It turned out that

some theatre also had a problem with sticky gas pedals. The

record`breaking settlement could provide a roadmap into a similar

investigation into General Motors. Today the Attorney General made that

clear, saying that other companies should not repeat the mistakes of

Toyota. Meanwhile, Toyota said... Now we had overseas to Ukraine. The

Russians appear to have won this round, taking control of their prize

Crimea. Under pressure, the Ukrainian government announced that

it would pull out troops. Our correspondence takes us to the

simmering tension. Falling like dominoes, today pro Russian forces

stormed Ukrainian navy headquarters, the head of the Navy taken prisoner,

still held tonight, as military plans of the evacuation of the

troops and the families. As Russia takes control of Crimea, symbols of

the past are erased. Russian flags are raised. Clocks will move ahead

two hours to Moscow time. The Russian ruble will become an

official currency. There is excitement and uncertainty. Long

lines snaked out of the banks. There is food, no matter what country it

comes from, whether American chips, Italian pasta, it all comes from the

Ukraine. Right now, no one knows how or if it will continue. Water,

power, phone lines, they all come from the Ukraine. To connect Russia

with Crimea, Russia is proposing a massive construction of a bridge and

tunnel is. The vice president angrily called Russia's actions "a

land grab". Russia has not flinched. The world is doing little

more than watching Russia complete the takeover. Here at home, a big

headline about Alzheimer's tonight. Why does the disease strike

mothers, sisters, more than the men of the family? Any report reveals

startling numbers. `` a new report. This couple share everything, six

children, 11 grandchildren, decades of work, and joy. These days, Peggy

is facing her own unique challenge. She has Alzheimer's. There has been

some memory loss in her case. You can deal with it day by day. The

problem shows how common this problem is. Women over 65 are twice

as likely to develop the disease as males. One reason is age. On average

women live longer than men. With a life expectancy of 81, compare to 76

for men. Alzheimer's spikes for both sexes at the age of 75. But it is

more, located, and scientists are racing to see whether genetics,

hormones, and brain structure plays a role. There are mysteries in the

brain, that is why more federal funding for research is needed to

unblock the mysteries of the disease. Women bear another burden,

they are more likely to be caregivers. So bring new

statistics, known first`hand by so many families. `` sobering. It

affects everyone in the country. We move on to welcome change of

seasons. Tomorrow marks the official beginning of spring. Now the

official verdict of how bad the winter was and the prediction of

spring on the way. As we officially say hello to spring, millions of us

are saying goodbye to the harshest winter in almost 30 years. Those

Cincinnati, buried in the top five snowiest seasons on record. Ploughs

mystery of Madeleine McCann, the girl with the magical eyes. Three

years old when she vanished on a family vacation in Portugal. Now

after seven years, a revelation about a possible suspect, our

reporter has a new lead. It is a TV re` creation that has gripped the

world. Seven years ago, Madeleine McCann's parents enjoyed dinner at a

resort in Portugal, but back in their room, someone kidnapped their

three`year`old daughter Madeline who they had left alone. It was watched

by millions, sparing 5000 calls and an avalanche of new clues, and five

months later, something has rocked the case. We believe there is a

potentially linked series of offences where a man is targeting UK

families, who were on holiday in the Algarve region. Police say they are

hunting for a man with a pot belly. He is described as calm, speaking

English with a low slurred voice wearing a longsleeved burgundy shirt

with a white circle. Police believe he sexually assaulted five other

vacation in Portugal, slipping into vacation in Portugal, slipping into

resort rooms, some near where the girl was staying. Always striking in

the early hours of the morning. In the years before and after her

disappearance. Investigators say they knew about the break`ins, but

discounted them, thinking they were spread over two wide an area. There

were no abduction attempt is made in any of the other cases. British

police say it was not until the TV recreation that three more British

families came forward. Revealing to them what had happened to their

children. And what they knew about the suspect. Madeleine McCann's

parents have never given up hope. Tonight the question is, is it the

help of the public that is leading them to the answer what happened to

giving her caretaker a look as to say" I do not want to stop

cuddling". Trying to fit her whole fist in her mouth. As any baby would

do. Finally here tonight, finding hope where you least expect it,

parents of an autistic son, so desperate, they turn to help of

someone in prison. A prisoner who makes the most of a chance. Here is

our reporter. In 1998, this man was sentenced to 48 years in a Colorado

prison for helping kill a man. I am in prison. On a murder case. I am

guilty of it. For the families of nine autistic children, this

convicted murderer is a saviour. For years, they have allowed prisoners

here to train service dogs for the blind and deaf, but this prisoner

did something amazing. He wrote all he could, and taught himself to

train service dogs for children with autism. The dogs come from local

shelters, he trains inside of his cell, acting out a problem

behaviours himself. This dog was trained to help a child sleep at

night. The parents of this nine`year`old were desperate, he was

refusing to be touched, his teacher said he would stop class. He was

bawling his eyes out. He would crouch in the feat opposition under

his desk. At weekends, they said their son 200 miles away to the

state prison to work with him. `` underneath. The dog is trained to

know when his anxiety is building and help to break his mood. I have

been calm enough to socialise with other children. When we travelled

with him and his family to the prison again, what was once

unthinkable. He gave Chris a hug. This is what I get to do, it give

something back. `` gives. With the sack, and all of the kids, when they

come in and work with me, they get to see... They do not ```Zak. Get to

see them. They thought it would be the last place they would get help.
