in just under half an hour's time. Time now for a look at the news as

seen across the United States a couple of hours ago, in ABC World

News with David Muir. Tonight, the breaking news of a us crash in Times

Square. Filled with tourists, the chaos and the injured, so many of

them pedestrians, and we are on the scene tonight. Gunned down. The

American two star general shot and killed in Afghanistan. Our

correspondent is right here. Wiped away, mudslides across several

states. The woman trapped in this car, and the rescuer pulled away.

And look at this. The house collapsing in front of our eyes. In

the air scare. Imagine looking at your window and seeing this. Fighter

jets suddenly as good in your plane. And the stunning moment that led to

this. Good evening. It is great to have you with us. We have several

major stories tonight. First, the chaotic scene still unfolding at

this hour in Times Square. Millions of families visit every year as you

know. Two double`decker is involved in the crash at the crossroads of

the world. Teaming with tourists, not far from where you live up to

get those Rodway tickets. Passengers stunned as one bus crashes into

another. More than a dozen injured, most of them pedestrians walking on

the sidewalk. Our correspondent is there tonight. Right over my

shoulder, the front of a tour bus, nearly demolished. All of this in

one of the busiest intersections in the world. Chaos tonight in the

beating heart of New York City. Times Square, right by the famous

Broadway ticket booth. And then I started screaming. A blue

double`decker tour bus, crashing into another double`decker tour bus,

which then smashed into a lamppost, toppling it. All in the middle of

hundreds of tourists. We were just about to cross the street, and then

this bus driver, really crazy bus driver, came at a very high speed

and hit the lady standing right next to my daughter, and she flew through

the air and she landed right there. And I pulled her back, and we hit

this poll, and that was it. Bystanders swooping in to help the

injured. This woman in red huddled over one victim, others carried away

on stretchers. This eyewitness carried the bloody scene on his

cellphone. I heard a big room. I saw the poll going, like tumbling down.

`` pole. Everyone was lying down injured, screaming, asking for help.

All of this unfolding in a jampacked Times Square, steps away from where

tourists lined up for tickets to Broadway shows. 14 injuries so far

including a child. 11 of those injured were pedestrians, and not on

either bus. Buses were not crowded, but three people on board were

hurt. We did have one person, the tour guide, had to be removed from

the bus. He had was caught under the dashboard, actually. She wasn't

badly injured. I was praying and hoping nobody would get killed, you

know what I mean? But all I saw was just people laying underground.

Police tell us the investigation is just beginning `` lying on the

grounds. They will be looking at surveillance from private businesses

and public cameras to find out what happened. I want to bring in the

police Commissioner Ray Kelly, watching this with me today. You

told me this was one of the areas of New York which concerns the police

Commissioner the most. Correct, last year we had 50 million tourists in

New York City. And virtually all of them at some point made it to Times

Square. 52 million, a lot of relief that the injuries were not worse

than what we had absolutely. The injuries could have been a lot more

serious. We are thankful, and we were lucky. Thank you. We will turn

out to be other major story we are following tonight. As one out of

Afghanistan. An American to star general killed by an Afghan

soldier. It is believed the US might have trained him. Tonight the US

base, the scene of the shooting, on lockdown. This evening, what we are

learning about the so`called guardian angels they are in the room

at the moment the gunman opened fire, and what they did which likely

saved lives. `` there in the room. It was broad daylight at a training

centre inside, Major General Harold Greene. The commander of the

training mission was meeting with American, Afghan, and other Nato

troops. Then from an elevated position, the gunman struck. He was

a member of the security forces, trained by Americans in uniform.

Opening fire with an automatic weapon, hitting the general and

those around him. More than 12 wounded, many seriously. Within

seconds, the so`called guardian angels, soldiers, Americans armed

and present to protect against such attacks, fired back, killing the

gunman. But it is too late. Major General Harold Greene, the American

to star general, one of the nation's top ranking officers, was

dead. The loss of any life is tragic, but the symbolism will have

a huge effect on US forces. Major General Harold Greene, who lived in

Virginia and is well`known in the military, has a son in the army and

a daughter who recently graduated from college. He is the first

general officer to die in a war zone from hostile fire in Vietnam's.

American soldiers pride themselves on taking care of their leaders. The

many generals I have travelled with in Iraq and Afghanistan are always

surrounded late security. That failed today. The number of these

insider attacks has gone down as American forces won't down their war

in Afghanistan. But it is still a dangerous place, and losing a

general who had mental and so many troops and have more than 30 years

in the military, is an especially painful reminder. Thank you. We turn

now to the growing alert over the deadly Ebola virus. You remember

these images, the doctor infected, in hospital in Atlanta. Now a second

patient, the same hospital, this time we'll get in on a stretcher.

You see those workers covered from head to toe in protective gear.

Today her family are saying that one week after considering possible

funeral plans, they have new reason for hope.

Driven to this hospital, the paramedics who wield her had to

where hazmat suits. A relief agency said the hospital where she worked

isn't taking new patients. Investigators on the scene are

trying to investigate how she and Doctor Bradley are infected `` were

infected. We don't know where the contact point was. Her job was

personnel could water later. When patients poured in sick with Ebola,

she was right there helping disinfect doctors and nurses. Before

moving her, we looked inside the ambulance. Doctor Bradley was moved

inside the same vehicle. In West Africa, this is the deadliest

outbreak. Of nearly 2500 deaths, more than one third happened since

March this year. So frightening, British airways have suspended

flights to Liberia and Sierra Leone. Despite the risks, an American

doctor and others tell us they are heading into the danger zone, trying

to keep the world safe. We are not cavalier. Everyone going in has

training to handle this. Both seek missionaries say they were answering

the call of God. Families are at the hospital praying together.

Around the world, to the Middle East, the ceasefire is holding this

evening. Images of life under the fragile truce in Gaza, children

playing in a part. In Israel, families in bomb shelters. Israeli

troops /PV for victory. Israel have pulled back forces from Gaza `` V

for victory. They say to note that the tunnels have been destroyed. We

turn to the skies over England. One man looking out the window and

seeing this. That is a fighter jet off the wing, escorting the plane to

the nearest airport. The moment was captured by people on the ground.

Triggered by a note sent to the pilot midflight.

It was minutes from landing. A window, some of the passengers saw

this `` out the window. A fighter jet responding to an emergency. I

saw the fighter jet outside my window, that was when I began

shaking. The passengers didn't know the pilot radioed an alarm after

being handed a note from a man that an explosive device was on board.

Heading from Joe Hart to Manchester, the flighty jets

scrambled to escort the plane in `` Doha. Police swooped in once on the

ground, arresting the passenger. It was terrifying all the way through.

You never think you would be in that situation. Airline around the world

are on edge. Recently in Canada, two weeks ago, a SWAT team storming a

flight after a threat was made. Passengers are once again shaken up.

Fortunately, no suspicious device was found on board the plane and the

passenger who made the bomb threat is in police custody tonight. We

turn to the economy. The Dow closed nearly 140 points,

fuelled by concerns over the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.

More at head, the rescue at sea, the father and kids 12 miles out, their

boat sinks. The one device they have that saved them all. Later, the kid

who steals the show `` ahead. I don't watch the news because I'm a

To the danger in the west, heavy rain and flooding is expected in the

evening. This moment is near Las Vegas with a car swept away. The

driver was trapped inside. Another car was hurtling toward them. Also,

in Salt Lake City a state of emergency. A home collapses as the

camera rolls. About 20 families are out of their

homes tonight after a neighbour's house, look before, and after,

collapsed following heavy rain triggered a landslide. I told my

husband to wake up the kids. With good reason. This part of Utah has

seen twice the rainy usually does in two weeks. One homeowner has been

damaged. We are trained to keep it like that. Heavy rain is causing

damage next door in Nevada where a flash flood sent one car surging

toward a white Prius. A woman was trapped inside. Watch as a group of

could get 2`3 inches of rain, causing more flooding and mudslides.

A cold front is slicing through the midwest into Kentucky. For inches of

rain with potential of severe weather there as well.

it pushes towards the islands, it will encounter wind and dry air, so

it will weaken. It looks like it will hit the Hawaiian islands as a

tropical storm, followed by Julio. Meantime, we were speaking about

Hurricane Bertha, where is it now? It is weakening and is no threat to

land. It will continue moving out to sea. The problem along the Eastern

Seaboard is dangerous rip currents. There was a drowning yesterday off

the coast of the Atlanta city. Thank you. We are watching the

wildfires in the west. 11 in California were tonight,

firefighters received a boost in the form of rain and cold weather. We

saw the images of a woman capturing the moment as our plane drops fire

retardant into her backyard. This approach, a cabin wrapped in foiled

by firefighters. Take a look at this survivor. A bear cub spotted by

neighbours, rescued and tonight, we are told it is recovering.

We return to the stranded swimmers who recorded the rescue at sea.

Their boat sank. Our correspondent on what they had that saved them.

they had on board, lashed them together and prayed. Their saviour,

a simple GPS tracking device they brought with them on their

happened on the high seas off Hawaii. It was such a good site. We

were waiting for two hours and we were so stoked `` sight. This cost

$280. They aren't mandatory but they are highly recommended. It could

mean the difference between life and death.

This turned what could have been a bad news story into a very good news

story. What helped the coastguard locating

them quickly was that they had them on board. Husbands reunited with

their wives and kids with their parents. A cautionary tale.

We have been to the county fair, but this evening a five`year`old being

interviewed was much more than the reporter bargained for.
