man detained was 47 years old and from Northwest England. Mike Embley | :00:00. | :00:00.
in just under half an hour's time. Time now for a look at the news as | :00:00. | :00:09.
seen across the United States a couple of hours ago, in ABC World | :00:10. | :00:14.
News with David Muir. Tonight, the breaking news of a us crash in Times | :00:15. | :00:20.
Square. Filled with tourists, the chaos and the injured, so many of | :00:21. | :00:24.
them pedestrians, and we are on the scene tonight. Gunned down. The | :00:25. | :00:29.
American two star general shot and killed in Afghanistan. Our | :00:30. | :00:31.
correspondent is right here. Wiped away, mudslides across several | :00:32. | :00:37.
states. The woman trapped in this car, and the rescuer pulled away. | :00:38. | :00:43.
And look at this. The house collapsing in front of our eyes. In | :00:44. | :00:46.
the air scare. Imagine looking at your window and seeing this. Fighter | :00:47. | :00:51.
jets suddenly as good in your plane. And the stunning moment that led to | :00:52. | :01:07.
this. Good evening. It is great to have you with us. We have several | :01:08. | :01:12.
major stories tonight. First, the chaotic scene still unfolding at | :01:13. | :01:15.
this hour in Times Square. Millions of families visit every year as you | :01:16. | :01:21.
know. Two double`decker is involved in the crash at the crossroads of | :01:22. | :01:24.
the world. Teaming with tourists, not far from where you live up to | :01:25. | :01:28.
get those Rodway tickets. Passengers stunned as one bus crashes into | :01:29. | :01:33.
another. More than a dozen injured, most of them pedestrians walking on | :01:34. | :01:37.
the sidewalk. Our correspondent is there tonight. Right over my | :01:38. | :01:42.
shoulder, the front of a tour bus, nearly demolished. All of this in | :01:43. | :01:46.
one of the busiest intersections in the world. Chaos tonight in the | :01:47. | :01:52.
beating heart of New York City. Times Square, right by the famous | :01:53. | :01:58.
Broadway ticket booth. And then I started screaming. A blue | :01:59. | :02:02.
double`decker tour bus, crashing into another double`decker tour bus, | :02:03. | :02:06.
which then smashed into a lamppost, toppling it. All in the middle of | :02:07. | :02:11.
hundreds of tourists. We were just about to cross the street, and then | :02:12. | :02:15.
this bus driver, really crazy bus driver, came at a very high speed | :02:16. | :02:21.
and hit the lady standing right next to my daughter, and she flew through | :02:22. | :02:24.
the air and she landed right there. And I pulled her back, and we hit | :02:25. | :02:29.
this poll, and that was it. Bystanders swooping in to help the | :02:30. | :02:33.
injured. This woman in red huddled over one victim, others carried away | :02:34. | :02:38.
on stretchers. This eyewitness carried the bloody scene on his | :02:39. | :02:43.
cellphone. I heard a big room. I saw the poll going, like tumbling down. | :02:44. | :02:53.
`` pole. Everyone was lying down injured, screaming, asking for help. | :02:54. | :02:59.
All of this unfolding in a jampacked Times Square, steps away from where | :03:00. | :03:03.
tourists lined up for tickets to Broadway shows. 14 injuries so far | :03:04. | :03:10.
including a child. 11 of those injured were pedestrians, and not on | :03:11. | :03:14.
either bus. Buses were not crowded, but three people on board were | :03:15. | :03:19.
hurt. We did have one person, the tour guide, had to be removed from | :03:20. | :03:24.
the bus. He had was caught under the dashboard, actually. She wasn't | :03:25. | :03:29.
badly injured. I was praying and hoping nobody would get killed, you | :03:30. | :03:34.
know what I mean? But all I saw was just people laying underground. | :03:35. | :03:39.
Police tell us the investigation is just beginning `` lying on the | :03:40. | :03:44.
grounds. They will be looking at surveillance from private businesses | :03:45. | :03:50.
and public cameras to find out what happened. I want to bring in the | :03:51. | :03:53.
police Commissioner Ray Kelly, watching this with me today. You | :03:54. | :03:58.
told me this was one of the areas of New York which concerns the police | :03:59. | :04:02.
Commissioner the most. Correct, last year we had 50 million tourists in | :04:03. | :04:06.
New York City. And virtually all of them at some point made it to Times | :04:07. | :04:11.
Square. 52 million, a lot of relief that the injuries were not worse | :04:12. | :04:14.
than what we had absolutely. The injuries could have been a lot more | :04:15. | :04:17.
serious. We are thankful, and we were lucky. Thank you. We will turn | :04:18. | :04:24.
out to be other major story we are following tonight. As one out of | :04:25. | :04:28.
Afghanistan. An American to star general killed by an Afghan | :04:29. | :04:31.
soldier. It is believed the US might have trained him. Tonight the US | :04:32. | :04:35.
base, the scene of the shooting, on lockdown. This evening, what we are | :04:36. | :04:40.
learning about the so`called guardian angels they are in the room | :04:41. | :04:44.
at the moment the gunman opened fire, and what they did which likely | :04:45. | :04:53.
saved lives. `` there in the room. It was broad daylight at a training | :04:54. | :04:58.
centre inside, Major General Harold Greene. The commander of the | :04:59. | :05:02.
training mission was meeting with American, Afghan, and other Nato | :05:03. | :05:06.
troops. Then from an elevated position, the gunman struck. He was | :05:07. | :05:14.
a member of the security forces, trained by Americans in uniform. | :05:15. | :05:17.
Opening fire with an automatic weapon, hitting the general and | :05:18. | :05:21.
those around him. More than 12 wounded, many seriously. Within | :05:22. | :05:24.
seconds, the so`called guardian angels, soldiers, Americans armed | :05:25. | :05:32.
and present to protect against such attacks, fired back, killing the | :05:33. | :05:37.
gunman. But it is too late. Major General Harold Greene, the American | :05:38. | :05:40.
to star general, one of the nation's top ranking officers, was | :05:41. | :05:45.
dead. The loss of any life is tragic, but the symbolism will have | :05:46. | :05:50.
a huge effect on US forces. Major General Harold Greene, who lived in | :05:51. | :05:53.
Virginia and is well`known in the military, has a son in the army and | :05:54. | :05:56.
a daughter who recently graduated from college. He is the first | :05:57. | :06:00.
general officer to die in a war zone from hostile fire in Vietnam's. | :06:01. | :06:06.
American soldiers pride themselves on taking care of their leaders. The | :06:07. | :06:11.
many generals I have travelled with in Iraq and Afghanistan are always | :06:12. | :06:14.
surrounded late security. That failed today. The number of these | :06:15. | :06:18.
insider attacks has gone down as American forces won't down their war | :06:19. | :06:22.
in Afghanistan. But it is still a dangerous place, and losing a | :06:23. | :06:28.
general who had mental and so many troops and have more than 30 years | :06:29. | :06:34.
in the military, is an especially painful reminder. Thank you. We turn | :06:35. | :06:41.
now to the growing alert over the deadly Ebola virus. You remember | :06:42. | :06:45.
these images, the doctor infected, in hospital in Atlanta. Now a second | :06:46. | :06:51.
patient, the same hospital, this time we'll get in on a stretcher. | :06:52. | :06:55.
You see those workers covered from head to toe in protective gear. | :06:56. | :07:01.
Today her family are saying that one week after considering possible | :07:02. | :07:03.
funeral plans, they have new reason for hope. | :07:04. | :07:16.
Driven to this hospital, the paramedics who wield her had to | :07:17. | :07:23.
where hazmat suits. A relief agency said the hospital where she worked | :07:24. | :07:26.
isn't taking new patients. Investigators on the scene are | :07:27. | :07:31.
trying to investigate how she and Doctor Bradley are infected `` were | :07:32. | :07:38.
infected. We don't know where the contact point was. Her job was | :07:39. | :07:44.
personnel could water later. When patients poured in sick with Ebola, | :07:45. | :07:47.
she was right there helping disinfect doctors and nurses. Before | :07:48. | :07:52.
moving her, we looked inside the ambulance. Doctor Bradley was moved | :07:53. | :08:00.
inside the same vehicle. In West Africa, this is the deadliest | :08:01. | :08:08.
outbreak. Of nearly 2500 deaths, more than one third happened since | :08:09. | :08:13.
March this year. So frightening, British airways have suspended | :08:14. | :08:18.
flights to Liberia and Sierra Leone. Despite the risks, an American | :08:19. | :08:21.
doctor and others tell us they are heading into the danger zone, trying | :08:22. | :08:26.
to keep the world safe. We are not cavalier. Everyone going in has | :08:27. | :08:33.
training to handle this. Both seek missionaries say they were answering | :08:34. | :08:37.
the call of God. Families are at the hospital praying together. | :08:38. | :08:44.
Around the world, to the Middle East, the ceasefire is holding this | :08:45. | :08:50.
evening. Images of life under the fragile truce in Gaza, children | :08:51. | :08:54.
playing in a part. In Israel, families in bomb shelters. Israeli | :08:55. | :09:01.
troops /PV for victory. Israel have pulled back forces from Gaza `` V | :09:02. | :09:07.
for victory. They say to note that the tunnels have been destroyed. We | :09:08. | :09:14.
turn to the skies over England. One man looking out the window and | :09:15. | :09:18.
seeing this. That is a fighter jet off the wing, escorting the plane to | :09:19. | :09:22.
the nearest airport. The moment was captured by people on the ground. | :09:23. | :09:26.
Triggered by a note sent to the pilot midflight. | :09:27. | :09:35.
It was minutes from landing. A window, some of the passengers saw | :09:36. | :09:42.
this `` out the window. A fighter jet responding to an emergency. I | :09:43. | :09:48.
saw the fighter jet outside my window, that was when I began | :09:49. | :09:53.
shaking. The passengers didn't know the pilot radioed an alarm after | :09:54. | :09:58.
being handed a note from a man that an explosive device was on board. | :09:59. | :10:04.
Heading from Joe Hart to Manchester, the flighty jets | :10:05. | :10:07.
scrambled to escort the plane in `` Doha. Police swooped in once on the | :10:08. | :10:15.
ground, arresting the passenger. It was terrifying all the way through. | :10:16. | :10:20.
You never think you would be in that situation. Airline around the world | :10:21. | :10:27.
are on edge. Recently in Canada, two weeks ago, a SWAT team storming a | :10:28. | :10:35.
flight after a threat was made. Passengers are once again shaken up. | :10:36. | :10:41.
Fortunately, no suspicious device was found on board the plane and the | :10:42. | :10:45.
passenger who made the bomb threat is in police custody tonight. We | :10:46. | :10:50.
turn to the economy. The Dow closed nearly 140 points, | :10:51. | :10:57.
fuelled by concerns over the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. | :10:58. | :11:04.
More at head, the rescue at sea, the father and kids 12 miles out, their | :11:05. | :11:08.
boat sinks. The one device they have that saved them all. Later, the kid | :11:09. | :11:14.
who steals the show `` ahead. I don't watch the news because I'm a | :11:15. | :11:19.
kid. Grampa gives me the remote after we watch Powerball. The | :11:20. | :11:24.
five`year`old who grabbed the microphone in the middle of a news | :11:25. | :11:27.
report is right here with us tonight. | :11:28. | :12:12.
To the danger in the west, heavy rain and flooding is expected in the | :12:13. | :12:19.
evening. This moment is near Las Vegas with a car swept away. The | :12:20. | :12:24.
driver was trapped inside. Another car was hurtling toward them. Also, | :12:25. | :12:29.
in Salt Lake City a state of emergency. A home collapses as the | :12:30. | :12:36.
camera rolls. About 20 families are out of their | :12:37. | :12:43.
homes tonight after a neighbour's house, look before, and after, | :12:44. | :12:50.
collapsed following heavy rain triggered a landslide. I told my | :12:51. | :12:57.
husband to wake up the kids. With good reason. This part of Utah has | :12:58. | :13:01.
seen twice the rainy usually does in two weeks. One homeowner has been | :13:02. | :13:09.
damaged. We are trained to keep it like that. Heavy rain is causing | :13:10. | :13:14.
damage next door in Nevada where a flash flood sent one car surging | :13:15. | :13:21.
toward a white Prius. A woman was trapped inside. Watch as a group of | :13:22. | :13:26.
air and passing by Paul Bullmer woman out of the top dap `` top of | :13:27. | :13:33.
the driver's seat. One man saving the woman was nearly swept away | :13:34. | :13:34.
himself. We came up high tonight to give you | :13:35. | :13:47.
a perspective of how much land came tumbling down. It is raining again | :13:48. | :13:54.
tonight. It isn't good news. There isn't word on when those families | :13:55. | :13:59.
will be allowed back home. Thank you. I want to bring in our | :14:00. | :14:08.
meteorologist in Philadelphia. We aren't in the clear yet? | :14:09. | :14:14.
The moisture is pushing north so the border of Nevada, Idaho and Utah | :14:15. | :14:19.
could get 2`3 inches of rain, causing more flooding and mudslides. | :14:20. | :14:24.
A cold front is slicing through the midwest into Kentucky. For inches of | :14:25. | :14:29.
rain with potential of severe weather there as well. | :14:30. | :14:34.
You are tracking high retained and a tropical storm tonight. | :14:35. | :14:42.
`` to correct and is `` hurricanes. The first one has 125 mph winds. As | :14:43. | :14:50.
it pushes towards the islands, it will encounter wind and dry air, so | :14:51. | :14:57.
it will weaken. It looks like it will hit the Hawaiian islands as a | :14:58. | :15:03.
tropical storm, followed by Julio. Meantime, we were speaking about | :15:04. | :15:10.
Hurricane Bertha, where is it now? It is weakening and is no threat to | :15:11. | :15:15.
land. It will continue moving out to sea. The problem along the Eastern | :15:16. | :15:20.
Seaboard is dangerous rip currents. There was a drowning yesterday off | :15:21. | :15:26.
the coast of the Atlanta city. Thank you. We are watching the | :15:27. | :15:32.
wildfires in the west. 11 in California were tonight, | :15:33. | :15:34.
firefighters received a boost in the form of rain and cold weather. We | :15:35. | :15:38.
saw the images of a woman capturing the moment as our plane drops fire | :15:39. | :15:44.
retardant into her backyard. This approach, a cabin wrapped in foiled | :15:45. | :15:50.
by firefighters. Take a look at this survivor. A bear cub spotted by | :15:51. | :15:54.
neighbours, rescued and tonight, we are told it is recovering. | :15:55. | :16:00.
We return to the stranded swimmers who recorded the rescue at sea. | :16:01. | :16:04.
Their boat sank. Our correspondent on what they had that saved them. | :16:05. | :16:06.
The only way this helicopter came shark infested waters below, filmed | :16:07. | :16:33.
by this 15`year`old on are approximately 12 miles off land | :16:34. | :16:35.
`` GoPro. Water was coming into fast. They jumped into the kayak | :16:36. | :16:40.
they had on board, lashed them together and prayed. Their saviour, | :16:41. | :16:45.
a simple GPS tracking device they brought with them on their | :16:46. | :16:51.
adventure. It takes the search out of search and rescue. It takes us | :16:52. | :16:56.
right to their position. We are getting rescue. That is what | :16:57. | :17:00.
happened on the high seas off Hawaii. It was such a good site. We | :17:01. | :17:07.
were waiting for two hours and we were so stoked `` sight. This cost | :17:08. | :17:15.
$280. They aren't mandatory but they are highly recommended. It could | :17:16. | :17:18.
mean the difference between life and death. | :17:19. | :17:22.
This turned what could have been a bad news story into a very good news | :17:23. | :17:25.
story. What helped the coastguard locating | :17:26. | :17:30.
them quickly was that they had them on board. Husbands reunited with | :17:31. | :17:35.
their wives and kids with their parents. A cautionary tale. | :17:36. | :17:41.
We have been to the county fair, but this evening a five`year`old being | :17:42. | :17:44.
interviewed was much more than the reporter bargained for. | :17:45. | :17:52.
It began with a simple question, what did you think about the right? | :17:53. | :18:01.
`` ride? It was great! I have never been on live TV before. Apparently | :18:02. | :18:07.
he was about to give a bombastic review. I don't watch the news. I am | :18:08. | :18:15.
a kid, apparently grampa gives me the remote after we watch the | :18:16. | :18:20.
Powerball. Right there in Pennsylvania's county fair, giving a | :18:21. | :18:24.
play`by`play of the rides. Apparently, you're spinning around. | :18:25. | :18:27.
Apparently, every time you get dizzy. When I went down, I was | :18:28. | :18:32.
scared half to death. I just freaked out. We dropped in on him. Did you | :18:33. | :18:40.
expect to go to the fair and be a superstar? No, I didn't. We join him | :18:41. | :18:48.
digging for dinosaurs. I was a little embarrassed. Why? I said all | :18:49. | :19:00.
that stuff about my life. Tonight, on the world stage with the last | :19:01. | :19:03.
word. We will throw it back to David in the studio. Now, back to you. I | :19:04. | :19:15.
am no, now, back to you. We love the second take even more `` Noah. Can I | :19:16. | :19:24.
be done now? Apparently, we are out of time. See you here tomorrow | :19:25. | :19:27.
night. Hi. Looking ahead, the weather | :19:28. | :19:43.
pattern will be more changeable. We will all | :19:44. | :19:45. |
